They had a package in their care that was to be delivered to a genasi who could help with making a cure. It was delivered, but many of the party members died and they had arrived too late. They technically failed, and the disease continued to wreak havoc for 10 years.

Fast forward to now. Ramona (Goddess of Fate, Death and Graves) has been searching for a new party to once again stop the spread of the plague that has now made its trek to a different country. Instead of relying on a mortal person to gather up members, she has Charlay and Elisheva (Goddess of Lies, Luck, and Trickery) to assemble a new group of people she has personally selected. One way or another, they all went to one city and were given a contract to become a party under Charlay’s name.

As a newly assembled group, Charlay sends crows to their locations to scout out different items and solve problems in villages and cities to bring them one step closer to ending the plague. The plan changed ever so slightly though. Originally, the idea was to gather old scattered dwarven mural pieces dedicated to the god Makana (Music, Joy, Medicine) so that he may gather enough power to stop the plague.

The party soon discovered that it wasn’t so much as the plague spreading, as it was the goddess Det (Disease, Poison, Cults) and her, well, cult, trying to bring about the apocalypse (as in, Pestilence, Famine, War, and Death). They’ve been trying to get enough power to Det to consume a mortal life that they’ve prepared and possess a vessel that they have cultivated for her for over 20 years, that vessel being Wendy (twin sister of Jasper). Everything they’ve done on this adventure so far has been an effort to stop the cult.

And everything they’ve done so far has just been build up to the main quest arc where they finally start to realize how much shit they’re in and how much is riding on their shoulders. Being saviors of the world is kind of a tough job lmao.

Still, it was something they chose together as a class after having fallen in love with the story of a young lady who was cursed to go blind in seven days, and she decided she wanted to see everything in the world before that happened, and as she began her journey out of town, she met various people along the way- one of which was an adventure, volunteering to be her guide, who she would fall desperately in love with but never see again. A young soul who was cursed to only exist if they could be “seen”.

Right away, they were captivated by this and unanimously agreed upon it as their next project.

Everyone was excited for it; they were raring to go. Claudine had snatched the leading role as the blind young lady and she couldn’t be more thrilled. And maybe, somewhere deep down, her heart was also thrilled that cast opposite her as the love interest, was no other than Tendou Maya.

The infuriating woman, obviously, threw her a smirk in the most infuriating away she knew how. And she clearly knew she was pushing all the right buttons for Claudine to react to her… infuriating-ness... if that was ever a word.

All was normal, all was good.

Then it wasn’t.

Barging into today’s practice, through the wooden doors that could have broke from the sheer force with which they had hit the wall, was Tendou Maya’s father. Claudine would have applauded his dedication to acting, perfectly imitating a red chili, face scarlet with rage and fuming a few degrees, making the room they were all in, rise in temperature. She would have had he not marched straight up to Maya and landed a resounding smack across her face.

Claudine’s blood ran cold in contrast to the scalding gaze she threw at the elder Tendou. “Excu-“ Before she could move to her rival’s side and interrogate the sudden intrusion, the man began yelling.

“THIS is what you’re ignoring all my calls for the past week for? Slacking off and wasting your time and potential with silly games and silly girls, and useless productions!”

Claudine seethed. Her eyes travelling down Maya’s frame as the girl had her back to her. Her gaze found Maya’s tightly clenched hands- nails buried so deep they could draw blood. She wanted to reach out and ease the grip of the taller girl, wanting to bring her comfort, but at this moment, it was as if there was this wall that prevented anyone from stepping in to the father-daughter’s space.

“I texted you to come home right away. I told you, you were to meet some distinguished guests and perform for them. I told you to practice at home and prepare! DO YOU WANT TO SHAME THE PARENTS WHO GAVE EVERYTHING FOR YOU?!” His hand had lifted, and Claudine felt her body shift forward, mind telling her to block the blow.

Someone was faster, however. Nana had already caught the man by the hand, and even he was surprised at the strength that he couldn’t seem to overpower.

“Excuse me, not to sound rude, but are you allowed to be in here sir?” She asked with a bone-chilling smile.

“Even if you are a parent, it’s disrespectful to just barge into school grounds and intimidate students, visiting without prior notice.” Junna piped up from beside her. “We could inform a teacher and have personnel remove you for harassing students.”

“I’m her father.” The man breathed through gritted teeth, gesturing with his thumb to the girl who had yet to release a single word from her tightly pursed lips. Her head had been down the entire time since he hit her, and she had not moved an inch from her spot.

“Well, you sure don’t act like one.” Hikari remarked, not even sparing the man a glance.

“Why I-“

“Excuse me, the students have reported an incident, and I’m here to confirm.” Sakuragi-sensei entered the room, and the students felt relief flood their system, some tension fading away from their mentor’s presence. Behind her was a security guard and they could see Mr Tendou’s frame turn rigid as he coughed into his palm, regaining professional composure, before standing up in a confident posture.

“Ah, yes, sorry. No, it’s nothing. I’m here to speak to my daughter, that is all. Her… companions seemed to have the wrong idea.”

“Did we now…” Futaba slapped a hand over Kaoruko’s mouth before things turned worse.

“Even so, we have protocol, sir.” Sakuragi-sensei returned the professionalism, smiling as she led the man out. “We can discuss this further in the office with your daughter.”

“Maya. Come.” The man commanded, and Claudine flinched. What was he calling for? A dog? This was his daughter.

“…nt to…” The room’s occupants heard the soft mumble.

“What was that?” The anger seemed to be returning to Mr. Tendou’s voice as he took a step towards Maya’s direction.

“I-I…I don’t… I don’t want to!”

“You-“

“Mr. Tendou.” Sakuragi-sensei’s voice was firm, and the girls could never be more thankful for the strength their teacher displayed in moments like this where they needed her the most. “We’ll have the talk in my office.” She turned to the unfamiliar young lady in the middle of the room. Unfamiliar, not in the sense that they didn’t know who she was, but they could barely recognize her as she was. “Maya?”

Her invitation was gentle and kind, offering an option that Maya could say no, and not go with them, and that would be fine. She nodded her head, however, and Claudine had just enough time to react and grab the taller girl’s arm, all actions out of her control as her tongue slipped and she pleaded with a weakness she loathed,

“Don’t go.”

Maya laid her hand over Claudine’s, warm. She gave her a smile, and for a moment, Claudine’s heavy heart lifted, before her smile fell.

Maya went.

After that, the group of friends were only left with a message of a verdict and no sight of one Tendou Maya.

The top star was to go home with her father tonight, no questions asked. It had been her decision- or so Sensei had told them.

“It obviously isn’t.” Claudine sighed against the pillow she now found herself tightly embracing.

She lay on her bed in silence, feeling her head pound, heart heavy. It was so quiet in the dorm today. She could hear the fast ticking of a clock in her room. She could hear the footsteps of whoever was padding down the hall, possibly about to pass by her room.

It was nine pm, Claudine had checked the time. Maya should have been long gone by now-

A knock came on her door.

“Saijou-san?” The door opened the tiniest crack.

Should have, is certainly the right way to say it.

“What in the world are you doing here, Tendou Maya?” Claudine wanted to sound irritated, or her usual tone of annoyance, but somehow it came off as a gentle whisper- so soft, Maya could have missed it.

But she didn’t.

“I… may have ran back.”

“ALL THE WAY FROM YOUR HOUSE?!” Claudine could see a bit of dirt and tatter all over Maya’s wear, and she could see small beads of sweat on her brow.

“No, just the road. I-“ she swallowed a breath, “I told my father I didn’t want to go… He…” Her eyes flitted towards Claudine’s bed, and she finally realized that the other girl must be incredibly exhausted, so she led the way as they say side-by-side on the soft cushion.

Maya didn’t continue right away, but that was fine. Claudine was content on letting her take her time. She could tell her when she was ready. Claudine may not have been able to support Maya through actions or words earlier, but she sure as hell could do it through listening to her every worry and being by her side (forever, if possible) if that would help.

In Maya’s eyes, it was everything she ever really needed.

“I… those… my father. Well, you know how he said he messaged a week ago about having “distinguished guests” over.” She spoke with air quotes, and Claudine couldn’t help the small smile that formed on her face at the sheer cuteness of this creature before her.

She nodded as if to say, ‘go on’.

Maya smiled in appreciation at the lent ear. “Well, I am aware that what he means by that is that they are the families of potential suitors- or well, no, not suitors. Potential… marriage partners, you could say.”

Something didn’t feel right in Claudine’s chest. It felt constricted, and her throat ran dry as she nodded another response instead of speaking.

“Well, yes that, and I suppose to once more parade me like the trophy I am.”

Claudine frowned at those words. Finding her voice, she spoke with conviction. “You are wonderful, you are amazing, but you are not a display for their entertainment.”

Maya genuinely smiled at that, fingers tentatively reaching out to touch Claudine’s. The French girl made a small jump, but then relaxed, fingers intertwining with Maya’s as if it were the most natural course of action. She felt Maya squeeze her thanks, and she squeezed back.

There was always this warmth with Maya, a feeling she couldn’t quite name. It had planted itself in Claudine’s heart for quite some time and had only grown, having no plans of leaving, taking no steps towards the exit. It wasn’t just friendship; she knew that for certain. It wasn’t a negative feeling at all, either. She only ever felt this way around Maya.

Wait. Her thoughts were getting distracted again. She internally sighed.

“Continue?” She offered her ear once more, certain that her constant partner had more to tell.

“Ah, yes. Well.” She cleared her throat. “No one would fancy that. Being…yes. That. Um.” Was it always this hard to form words? Maya thought. “I- he, we talked. And. I-“ She could usually speak her mind so confidently, unabashed and eloquent. As of now, she was reduced to a bumbling pile of fool.

But Claudine never saw her that way. “Take your time.” She whispered, squeezing Maya’s hand once more, red eyes offering mental solace to Maya. “Take your time.”

Maya nodded, breathing in and out. “Long story short, I told him, I finally told him with enough conviction that… I didn’t want to. I didn’t want to be his trophy, I didn’t want to be his shadow, I didn’t want to be his little doll or mascot, or toy or tool; I-“ She grinned, turning to face Claudine fully with a blinding smile. “I don’t want to be married off to whatever buffoon he chooses, who has clearly just the same amount of toxic ego as him. I can only imagine the people he currently associates with and favors.” Maya shook her head in disgust.

Claudine simply ran her thumb over the back of Maya’s hand, humming in reply.

“He wasn’t always like that.” The way Maya said that broke the child actress’ heart for the umpteenth time that day. “He used to be so much more than… whatever remains of him now.”

Claudine could only go on with her nonverbal responses, continuing to play with Maya’s hand in an effort to send her comfort. The latter appreciated it greatly.

“He was a better man… you know?”

Claudine offered the back of Maya’s hand a kiss, barely missing the blush that was quick to come and go on her face. “I know. Where would such a wonderfully, captivatingly, infuriatingly, charming lady such as yourself come from, otherwise?”

This time, Maya did blush.

The silent awkwardness made Claudine follow suit.

They sat there in discomfort as time passed before Maya broke the tension with a gentle tone.

“Ma Claudine.” That one phrase sent the said girl’s soul soaring. Maya shifted closer to her, blush still apparent on her face as she leaned over to lay her head on Claudine’s shoulder. “Don’t you want to know why I don’t want to get married to anyone my father chooses?”

“Aside from the fact that they might as well be narcissistic, idiotic pricks?” Maya burst into a sweet laughter at that, giving Claudine the sudden urge to embrace her and pray to hear that sound forever and ever-

These thoughts really, never taking a break.

Wiping a happy tear from her eye, the brunette responded, “Aside from that, yes.”.

“I-“ Claudine chanced a glance at the girl resting on her shoulder before staring up at the ceiling. “I don’t really know. Maybe you have someone e-else in mind?” Curse her stuttering. What was that all about?

“Oh! As expected of Saijou-san. How bright~.” Maya teased, and though her voice was playful, Claudine couldn’t find it in herself to play along. She didn’t like the sudden need to pull away and put distance between herself and Maya at this knowledge that the other actually had someone she liked. “Yes, this person seriously plagues my mind. At the start, I may have found it the slightest bit annoying.”

“Oh yeah?” Claudine knew her voice held that tinge of anger that wasn’t her usual schtick. This, she knew, was laced with hurt and a jealousy towards someone she probably had never met before. It made her feel pathetic. She pulled her hand away from Maya, extracting her whole body, stunning the said girl before she regained her composure, shocking Claudine with her next action.

Arms on either side of her head, Claudine was successfully pinned down by one Tendou Maya, eyes screaming an emotion that felt familiar, yet not to Claudine at the same time.

“Yeah.” Claudine could feel the ghost of Maya’s breath at their proximity. She swallowed.

“Well, lucky them, huh. Snagging the oh-so-great Tendou Maya.” Claudine made for a break once more, only to have her exit blocked as Maya now held her hands, lacing their fingers once more as she held Claudine in place, bent over her.

“Yes, I would hope they do feel lucky. After all, my father told me if I really wanted to do what I wanted, to marry whoever I wanted, to live as I pleased; If I wanted to prove that I could make it on my own, with my own efforts, without the name of my parents, or their backing…” She leaned down just another inch closer.

Far too close in Claudine’s honest opinion.

Maya continued. “He said I could start by walking all the way back here without calling for help, a ride, or anything.” She chuckled. “That sadistic ass even rode alongside me just to make sure. I’m glad I made it. I’d do it again if this is all it took to shut him up.”

Maya was so close now, her forehead bumping Claudine’s. The blonde could only stare mesmerized by those determined eyes.

“Gosh, and to think it’s partially just for that one infuriating person.”

So the infuriating person could find someone else infuriating huh?

“Yes, I can.” Maya laughed.

Ah, so Claudine had spoken that aloud.

“Yes, you did.”

Claudine rolled her eyes. “Well I apologize for that if it happened to offend you. Not that I haven’t said it before.”

“I’m used to it, I would say.”

“It would do you good. What if the person you like finds you infuriating as well one day?”

Maya’s laughter could only grow as she nuzzled her nose against Claudine’s.

“Ma Claudine, how can you be so dense? Ah certainly the person who plagues my thoughts makes it difficult for me to control myself, to bear my emotions and my musings, and all of those above. Really,” Maya brought a hand to cup Claudine’s face gingerly. “I think of you so much I wish you’d return the sentiment. Otherwise, I wish you’d find the exit out of my head-”

Claudine felt her breath stall in her lungs.

“…And find the entrance to my heart instead.”

That certainly did her in, the damage to her heart so great no coherent thought or word could hope to be formed as Claudine could only manage to splutter out noises as her face burned with emotion.

Well, she probably didn’t need her lips to speak anymore anyway, not when they were now occupied with reciprocating the tender embrace of Tendou Maya’s.

If Claudine could combust… oh, but she probably already did.

She had wormed her way in through the entrance to Maya’s heart, and she supposed it wasn’t so bad if she never found the exit.

so i haven't watched batter up but i've seen clips and that's basically the same thing, and from what i've seen... i'm not missing out on very much lol. like let's start out with the yg EYE remember, with the most fashion-forward, trendy groups out there - they had an edge that couldn't be imitated for a very long time. 2NE1's collaborations with jeremy scott and adidas are still legendary, i think they really established a real connection for what kpop fashion could really be (at least for the second gen)

but everyone knows by now that they've pretty much gotten comfortable with where they are - meanwhile, the hip-hop baddie hood unnie concept has been ran thru since at least 2013. everyone has the same access to the same sound and the same pinterest boards and the same set design or whatever

but they don't want to adapt! bc they know how loyal stans can be to their groups, and therefore they can keep peddling the same reject songs they've had for 10 years. batter up sounds like it could have been released by blackpink in 2018 right along with ddu du ddu du. and though it would be kind of insulting to say it could be a 2NE1 song, i can hear them on it too

but what yg doesn't know is that the only reason their stans are so dedicated is because the individual members can stand on their own. at least in big bang, 2NE1, and blackpink's case, which leads me to another problem yg has, managing groups with more than 5 members. winner is an exception to this rule because mino is really the only one who stands out to me. then you have ikon with bobby being the most recognizable member. and treasure... no one knows wtf they're doing with those fiftyleven members... i genuinely could not pick any of them out of a lineup... you could point to any nugu kpop boy and say he's in treasure and i'd be like yeah sure. and with babymonster (i really love this name btw), i would say the standout is pharita? maybe? but everyone else kinda fades into the background. they need a Role, something that makes them an essential part of the group. yg used to understand how to do this, but they've lost it in recent years. babymonster will lowkey be fine bc they had their little webseries thing that made people become weirdly attached to them predebut. but if they didn't debut this year after all the delays their hype train would have died down hard.

but when blackpink debuted, it was huge because it was the first yg girl group since 2009, 2NE1 was basically being punished for being old hags (only half kidding), it was time for FUTURE 2NE1!!!!!!!! but we now see that yg is really just terrible at managing girl groups, so this debut just doesn't seem appropriately timed. debuts in general don't feel huge or important anymore. like sm just debuted a new boy group a couple months ago and it's... crickets (which is kinda nct's fault but that's a topic for another day). call it oversaturation or whatever but you really have to be doing some crazy shit for people to gaf about new groups. newjeans was maybe the last debut that made some noise because surprise drops are pretty unheard of in kpop.

but yeah yg kinda just lost its entire flavor. they're a legacy label of course, but the only thing that's keeping them relevant rn is blackpink, and if they leave, well... you know. hybe took their spot in the big 3, if anyone even still believes in that anymore. side note, this will never happen to sm btw. that's not even the pink blood in me (ew) i genuinely believe if sm were to fall, it would have happened a long time ago. jyp (the company) stays in the big 3 because twice and also jyp (the man) is egregiously fame-hungry. he would do anything and everything to keep his name in the streets

anyway i think yang hyunsuk deserves to have his name attached to a has-been company that is tarnished forever due to his and his associates' various crimes but i do feel bad for those young girls because blackpink and 2NE1 are definitely an indication of what's going to happen. i hope they don't have the roughest go of it at least

the decline of yg has been so interesting to watch in real time. i'm gonna write about it soon

Kieran Shepard - Character Profile

I got extremely carried away so let’s go under the cut

this only goes thru about the halfway point of Mass Effect 2 right now because I’m still working thru the game! I’ll update it when I’m done with ME2 and after ME3 probably.

Pre-Mass Effect 1

Kieran Shepard was born on Earth and grew up in the slums of Chicago. She was shuffled around various foster and group homes for her childhood, and the only sense of stability she knew was in the gang she was recruited to at a young age, the Tenth Street Reds. She was part of the "Clubs" suit of the organization, specializing in hitting hard and fast. She was outfitted with her biotic amps by the gang to make her more effective in close quarters combat. She grew up very distrustful of law enforcement and authority in general.

After a job went south when she was 16 and she ended up tied up in a homicide, she was given the option by the courts to go to prison or go to an 'alternative education' school funded by the Systems Alliance. It was her first taste of structure outside of the gang life, and she adapted to it better than expected, eventually falling in line with the Alliance’s way of doing things despite her initial resistance to trusting the authority of a large military organization. Upon her graduation at 18, she joined the Alliance military. She served under Captain Anderson on the SSV Tokyo, and was one of the Alliance marines on leave when the Skyllian Blitz hit Elysium. Leading the charge to defend the colony and using her years of experience of fighting dirty and coordinating disparate people in the Tenth Street Reds, coupled with her military education, she and the colonists beat back the invaders and she was awarded the Star of Terra.

After this point, Kieran’s dedication to being the Perfect Alliance Soldier intensified; there were eyes on her now, and expectations to meet. The impostor syndrome began setting in. She fought back against it by overworking herself to be better than the best, taking even the slightest mistakes as evidence she was worthless and going to be discovered as the fraud she was. This only got worse when Captain Anderson hand picked her to be his XO on the SSV Normandy.

Kieran kept a fairly stiff outward appearance and did her best to emulate Captain Anderson, thinking this was what was expected of her. Despite this, she, Jenkins and Joker managed to develop a sibling-like banter while the Normandy was being prepped for its first mission.

Mass Effect 1

Eden Prime was her first mission officially having a command, Elysium having taken place before she was promoted. Losing Jenkins so quickly was terrifying, proof that she wasn’t fit to be here. But, no time for that, she carried out the mission, recruited Ashley, was sucked into the Beacon, etc. No one seemed to blame her for Jenkins’ death, which only served to make her feel more fraudulent. Like now that she had authority, there was also a lack of appropriate consequences. Her old disdain for authority tried to breach above the water, but she forced it back down. She found some solace in Kaidan’s logical, clinical way of explaining things, including Jenkins’ death; it helped the Subjective feel more Objective, and she came to trust his opinions.

The Council’s reaction to Saren was, as it is for all Shepards, infuriating. Again, her old reasons for distrusting authority had one more ‘point’ in their corner. Still, she did her best to stay in line, to be the Soldier she needed to be, and eventually to be the Spectre she needed to be. Losing Captain Anderson to politics, though, shook her. Before, she had at least someone higher than her on the food chain to turn to when she was in over her head. Now, she was on her own.

She came to lean more heavily on Kaidan’s advice during this time, and on Joker for levity. She didn’t take well to Garrus; his history as a cop and constant complaints that red tape kept him from getting justice done ‘his way’ smacked of crooked cops on Earth. Still, when they clashed, he tended to back down and consider what she said. She enjoyed Wrex’s company, though, his old war stories reminding her of the senior members of her gang on Earth. She also enjoyed her talks with Ashley and Tali, the former because of her candor-- Kieran could at least be sure Ash was always honest with her--and Tali because she was the only person on board who seemed as out of place as Kieran felt. Plus, Tali’s a delight, who wouldn’t like her? She was fairly ambivalent to Liara, not sure if she viewed her as more of an extension of her Prothean research as a person, and they had their fair share of awkward conversations, but there’s no malice there.

Kieran’s next Major Event takes place on the Citadel, when a member of the Tenth Street Reds tries to blackmail her into using her newfound power and influence to release one of their own from prison. In the time since she left, they became an even more outwardly xenophobic organization, which rubs her the wrong way. Doing her best to be a Model Soldier, she immediately reports him to C-Sec, leading to a confrontation. In the heat of the moment, Kieran panicks. Her past is a matter of public record, but she can’t have him dragging her thru the mud, spreading lies, hurting her reputation and the Alliance’s. Her position is too precarious. They’ll find out that she’s a fraud, even if he’s lying. She shoots him, intending it as a warning, but killing him on the spot instead. (I wrote more about this here when I played that part of the game!) The Turian cop is impressed. Kieran is horrified, both by her actions, and by the cop’s approval of her killing him in cold blood. She returns to the Normandy and throws up.

I’m fudging the canonical timeline a little bit here, but I think this event is what leads into Kaidan telling Kieran the story of how he killed the Turian ‘teacher’ on Jump Zero as a way of helping her contextualize what just happened. They Bond. The rest of the game unfolds without too many more Major Character Moments that are unique to Kieran versus All Shepards. Wrex survives Virmire, Ashley doesn’t. Ash becomes the second to die under her command, the first to die as the result of an explicit choice she made to save the man she has feelings for. The guilt threatens to rip her in half, but we have a galaxy to save, so she does. She manages to talk Saren into realizing he is indoctrinated, but it’s too late for him. She leaves the council to die on the Destiny Ascension, not willing to risk losing firepower to use against the Reaper, and is infuriated when the political spin on the story becomes that she was ‘protecting human interests over galactic ones’. She does not understand why the lives of three politicians should outweigh thousands of soldiers or millions of civilians on the Citadel, and she never will.

Having never trusted Udina, Kieran nominates Captain Anderson to lead the new council. She spends the ensuing months cleaning up pockets of geth resistance with the Normandy crew before getting spaced by the Collectors, as all Shepards do from time to time.

Mass Effect 2

Kieran wakes up in a Cerberus facility and is horrified. She ran into Cerberus plenty in Mass Effect 1, and her impression of them is bad to say the least. After fighting her way through the facility under siege and being horrified by Miranda’s actions killing Wilson, she heads to Freedom’s Progress, all the while trying to figure out a way to get out of this, even tho she suspects The Illusive Man’s statements that she’s free to do as she pleases to be lies. No one invests that much without expecting returns, or demanding them. Her only solace is in Joker, who at least seems not to have changed much, and Dr. Chakwas. She tries to communicate to Tali on Freedom’s Progress that she doesn’t want to be here, tries to get her to come along for the mission, but at least for now, she can’t. She goes to Captain Anderson on the Citadel to try to bring the mission to the Alliance, the Council, anything to get away from Cerberus, but he cannot help her. Her old crew is unavailable, Kaidan’s location is classified, she can’t get messages out to any of her old crew without risking Cerberus reading them and someone has to stop the Collectors.

Even though the two had never been close, she is elated to see Garrus on Omega, in as bad shape as he is. At least he’s a familiar face and someone who doesn’t trust Cerberus. She bonds with Zaeed for similar reasons to Wrex; she likes his old war stories and he reminds her of the people she grew up with. And, he doesn’t treat her any differently because of her status. She’s still guarded around Jacob and Miranda, she doesn’t trust EDI, and she immediately gives Jack access to all of Cerberus’s files. The two don’t exactly get along, but they at least have hating Cerberus and their colorful backgrounds in common. Grunt at least is easy to understand for her; prove you’re strong, and he’ll respect you. Good enough for now.

Horizon hits Kieran like a truck. Seeing the Collectors in action is traumatizing enough; then she sees Kaidan, who she’s been wanting to talk to since she woke up, who she hoped would understand that she’s trapped, and he lays into her for a situation she feels she cannot control. He says she betrayed the Alliance, betrayed him, wonders if their relationship meant anything to her. She’s stunned. Until this point, the fact that she was gone for two years never really felt real, never sunk in. But now it’s undeniable. It’s changed her, it’s changed the people she cares about, and she feels like she truly lost everything. Even after getting his follow up email (which I highly recommend listening to the voice actor read), Kieran’s mental health is in shambles. It’s not enough to undo her self doubt spiral. He thinks she’s a bad guy now? That she’s a traitor? Fine. No point in fighting it, then. (To be clear, I personally don’t blame Kaidan at all for Horizon, nor Shepard, it’s just a shit situation, but Kieran’s self esteem is SHOT)

Don’t do that. She and Miranda bonded a bit over that mission, I think; she still doesn’t like Cerberus, but she likes Miranda, and I think that counts for a lot for her.

Her current attitudes to the rest of the crew are: Jacob she is indifferent to but respects his honesty; she doesn’t like or trust Mordin due to his treatment of the Krogan and the sense of racial superiority over the Krogan; she likes Kelly and the engineers fine; she has a respect for Jack even if Jack doesn’t like her; she likes Garrus more now that he’s not so into his “justice by any means necessary” bit but we’ll see how his loyalty mission goes; she likes Kasumi; she is really glad to have Tali back, esp because she’s SO OUTWARDLY HOSTILE TO CERBERUS and it’s great; she likes Grunt and views Zaeed as kind of a fucked up father figure; she likes and trusts Chakwas and Joker; jury is still out on Thane but she at least can see he does his job well; and she CANNOT STAND SAMARA. Might end up going with Morinth on this playthru!

She feels like shit & lose confidence afterwards.

That idea that Reno was in the right got debunked recently too because the devs explained that even in vacations, the Turks have to remain in stand-by & mobilize when they're called, hence why they are really well paid by their company standards.

But with how now Rufus is tied to Wutaï & could not have shared that information with the other members of the group, we could end up in an interesting situation if for example, Elena wants to find & capture/kill Sarruf but discover that the guy is Rufus, which may change her perspective on things & give the opportunity to offer some ground for character developpment for the two of them.

It always felt like these two & Tseng as well, had an incomplete arc. Reno & Rude however are the most static members of the group so I hope part 3 will make them more interesting too but I also having them maybe openly losing faith to Shinra but managing to bounce back, something like that.

I'm probably one of the few who also like Reno's absence because it allowed Rude to shine more as an individual in Rebirth, by showing us is own bond with Elena& how he's a decent mentor to her & why he remind Reno that she is a part of their group of survivors as well in ACC.

I'm curious to know why you dislike Elena, in particular if you're a Rufus fan because the compilation made it that they are really similar & you can establish a lot of parallel between the two. Here have some rambling detailling those sides of their characters:

Both of them have egocentric goals ( as well as Cloud, who joined Shinra for the sake of impress a girl he fancied back home) , petty (so are Rude & Reno) & arrogant people, with their pride being rooted in insecurity : He wants to show the world he is better than his father, Elena wants to show she is better than her sister. Both of them also come from a family that has been emotionnally neglectful to them & we learn that the Turks seems to constantly make fun of her for not being "perfect" & she use to dislike them for it but also for their dedication to Shinra while also reluctantly admiring them for it. Rufus seemingly also doesn't understand the Turks dedication about saving Veld & keep telling Tseng to give up on him when he sees them charging out blindlessly to save him (this is why Rufus end takes Tseng aside & form the plan to Veld & Elfé by faking their death. It's also likely why Tseng decided to let Rufus take command of the group too, knowing we discover he's still umcomfortable in that position even after Meteorfall in Case of Shinra)

Rufus has his own brand of cruelty for the people he thinks deserves it, is willing to sacrifice some people to accomplish his goals, in particular in BC & lack empathy like Elena (her beat up attempts were made on people who stole medicine from Shinra, medicine that could be dangerous if not admnistred correctly & potentially killed or gave bad addiction to the kid that medicine has been stolen for, which would tarnish further Shinra's image post meteorfall. It's also interesting to note she wouldn't have done that if Reno had made a better job at selecting the person in charge to guard the medicine but also punish his accomplice instead of mistaking him with Evan & leaving it at that.)

Rufus can display a lack of concern for the masses due to his suppressed empathy. He only start to care after meteorfall as he finally understand what it means to be a leader, where he slowly start to embrace a more collectivist mindset.

Elena comes from a military family & has an interesting hindsight on things as she would have be fed on Shinra propaganda at home & the military academy while also growing up in the slums (it's implied she may come from the sector 6 aka wall market aka the entertainment district ruled over by sex traffickers) & knew the Turks prior to that so she likely became one, aware of the dark side of the job. She was also kidnapped by Avalanche, which add weight as to why she would be so gung-ho into capturing them. She would perceive them as a major threat to society & herself while making herself look good in front of her colleagues.

Both have leadership skills, are manipulative & schemers in the group. Rufus with the whole Avalanche-Wutai thing, Kylegate & Kilmister in CoS & with him attempting to enroll Cloud & deceiving the remnants in AC. Elena with her managing to manipulate the population of Midgar to evacuate the city & move to Edge, then her planning the capture of Avalanche in the chapter 8 of Rebirth & her proposing an ambush in the Temple. We see her in chap 12, compliment indirectly Rufus' plan for finding the Promised Land, which shows that she enjoy that side of the job but also that their superiors do a pretty bad job communicating their plans to her as they are too secretive on things. If she knew, she wouldn't have been as aggressive with Avalanche prior

Their main difference is Rufus knows how to compromise & remain cool under pressure most of the time (tho Rebirth is one of the rare cases where he doesn't & acts brashly. Sephiroth is actively trying to bring back is early, more unstable BC self by poking at his fear, insecurities & hole in his plans & cause him to make mistakes), his rationalization of things allow him to move on quicker to the point he's kinda speedrunning the grieving process adding as to why, he's not in touch & can't recognize some of his emotions ( we can also thank dad & Shinra uber toxic environnement for that)

Elena struggle with that, which leads her to act brashly & make it harder to move on (and there's also the lack of information factor) She's someone who feels a lot & worry about her self-worth (hence why she reveres the image she has of Tseng so much) to the point it's implied she feels like shit for at least 2 days after what happens in the Mythril Mines. So she double down on things instead of reflecting while her colleagues are failing her to provide more emotionnal support & talking things out.

She's also the one pointing out when Rufus is acting recklessly while also reluctantly admitting she likes his boldness (a line that didn't make it in the eng localization) which is, from one of the Board meeting in Rebirth, something Rufus want & need but undercut himself immediately by ordering unlimited loyalty, which is not real loyalty but wanting for his subordinate to act like sycophants & yes-men instead of people who can provide critiscisms & advice

And it's also interesting how post-OG, Elena is the only the Turks who has actual influence on the company policies as she is the only one proposing ideas like distributing & producing medicines (which improves Shinra relationship with the surrounding villages) & Rufus accept her ideas & give her the authority on the whole operation.

I think that side of her as well as her enthusiasm about the potential discovery of the Promised Land in 7R also show she feels concerned about society & see it as a duty to take care & protect it. So Shinra despite its faults, is supposed to represent strenght, comfort, services & safety in her mind.

Rufus critisize his father for Platefall but doesn't bother sending help to the people affected by it afterwards. So Elena has her good sides by bringing her own angle on thing making Shinra better & unknowingly steer Rufus into becoming a more decent leader in the process.

Her reason to be like that have not yet been explained in 7R so it would be nice if part 3 bring this back because in a way, she's not that much different than Rufus. Hence why I always raise an eyebrow when someone who turns out to be a Shinra fucker say they don't like her while still liking someone like Rufus.

It astounds me the loyalty the Turks have for Rufus Shinra and the Shinra corporation. I know that Rufus saved the remaining Turks from execution, which lead to their loyalty to Rufus, but what made them stay in Before Crisis? What made the remaining Turks (Tseng, Reno, Rude, and Cissnei) decide not to desert along with the rest of the Turks (aka fake their deaths)? Tseng was still clearly loyal to their department considering he was the one who faked the other Turks' deaths, but was it Rufus alone that made them stay? What backstories did they have that would explain their choice of occupation? Why did the Turks stay with Rufus to rebuild Shinra in Advent Children when Shinra was clearly a shell of its former glory? (and I imagine they weren't getting paid as much as before)

I do hope Square Enix gives us more stories about them and their motivations.

The sex offender registry is a fascist construct and needs to be abolished.

That is the argument i was having a few days ago in the comments of someone else's tiktok, because i am dedicated to using this app in the most annoying way possible.

but, it did remind me of this tumblr post i saw a few weeks ago about how it is important for us, as members of society, to have core political beliefs and theory to fall back on in times when we may be too caught up in the moment to think clearly about things.

because, of course, we, humans, are emotional

and sometimes we get overwhelmed with emotion, and if we are not careful, we make decisions based on those emotions, based on what feels right in the moment, rather than what is right long-term.

one of those core political beliefs thats worth having is, quite simply, "fascism is always bad."

and we can come to that conclusion just by looking at how fascism works, right?

so, what is fascism?

i'm not going to get into modern fascist government structures and all that; i don't have nearly enough experience with political theory to feel confident i would explain it well

but as a member of society who is aware of politics, i have enough experience to talk about how fascism affects politics.

so this is not going to be "what fascism is" but instead "how fascism works as a tool."

there are many ways that fascism works; one of them is as a political tool, as a strategy for gaining political power.

it may be useful for you to know that the word "fascism" comes from the italian word for "bundle"

fascist ideas have existed since well before the italian fascist party in the 1900's, but they gave it a name.

and it's a pretty descriptive name actually.

the idea is you put people into groups, into "bundles" basically, and those different bundles, those different groups, have different rights.

and it's a very useful idea if you want to be the only person or the only group of people who have power in a society.

first, you define your bundles, then you decide which bundles get which rights,

then you move people from one bundle to the next, until the only people who have rights are the people you, as basically a dictator at this point, want to have rights.

So, for example, lets say you live in a town with 100 people in it, and it's a total democracy; everyone gets a vote.

you, as an individual, then make up 1% of the vote.

that's not enough for you to have total control over this town. like, at all.

but you want total control; you want to be this town's king.

So your first step is to find some friends, and convince them that if you're king, they will also have more privileges in town.

maybe that means you promising them a cut of the town's taxes; who knows.

regardless, you find some way to convince, say 4 people, that you should be king of the town.

now, you have 5% of the town's vote saying you should be king.

that's obviously, still, not nearly enough.

so you start your fascist propaganda.

you look around and see who people in the town already don't like that much, for whatever reason,

and instead of saying "you all should make me king",

you say, "hey listen, i'm a pretty reasonable guy, we all don't like Freddy over there.

he's weird. he probably wants to do weird things with the government."

you start printing posters, putting out videos, songs, all sorts of things to try to convince the other people of the town that Freddy shouldn't get to vote.

And you don't actually have to convince everyone in town;

this is a simple, majority rules, democracy.

you already have yourself and your 4 friends convinced.

so in order to get to over 50% of the vote, you only have to convince 46 people.

which is a lot, for sure, but that's why you started with Freddy.

everyone already doesn't like Freddy that much, so it's not super difficult to convince quite a few people that Freddy shouldn't vote.

and it's not like you're trying to kill Freddy or anything; you just don't him voting.

and it works; you convince 46 people to vote against Freddy's right to vote.

now you say, "well, Freddy had all those people who voted for him.

Freddy has friends. some of his friends probably agree with his weird politics.

we should take away his friends' rights to vote, too. just to be safe."

and that's pretty severe. but it almost sounds reasonable.

and so most of the people who voted to make Freddy lose his vote will vote to make his friends lose their votes too.

maybe one of the people who voted against Freddy's rights will say no this is too far, and they'll vote to have Freddy's friends keep their votes.

But it won't matter.

the total voting pool, without Freddy, is now just 99 people.

a simple majority is 50 people now, not 51 like it was.

you can afford to lose that one voter.

and this process of pushing propaganda, saying "this other group of people is dangerous to our way of life and doesn't deserve a vote,"

taking away that group's vote, and in the process making the portion of people you have to convince for each new group smaller and smaller,

this repeats until eventually there's only 9 people with voting rights

you and your 4 friends, and 4 other people.

at that point you have a majority, and you can instantly take away the rights of all of those 4 other people.

you are now king of this town.

That is a very simplified version of how fascism works as a political strategy,

and i really skimmed over the propaganda; i'll get back to that.

but it's important to keep in mind that voting is not the only right that people in society have.

So like, first off, tangent: this is just an example of how fascism works in a town you already live in.

What we'll call "settler fascism" or "settler colonial fascism" works similarly, but instead of taking away people's rights one by one until your group has majority control,

you simply pick a town with a small number of people, you move there

you tell all your friends with similar political views as you to move there.

and eventually you and your friends have a majority population in this town, and it's under your control

usually, this works at the same time as basic fascism;

so while more of your friends are moving there, you are working there to take away people's rights.

and this is different from normal immigration, where you are moving somewhere with the intent of contributing to that society, as opposed to taking it over.

so like, just, normal people, moving somewhere, that's not settler colonial fascism.

but when you see governments or even private companies encouraging people to move to a specific region,

especially if the propaganda is specifically telling them that they deserve to be part of the government of that region, despite never having been part of that society before

that is very likely settler colonial fascism

and it's important to keep this in mind because sometimes you'll see in the news for example that an indigenous group

is protesting certain immigration rules that seem good on the surface.

like maybe some foreign government is promising voting rights to settlers of a region,

so when the indigenous people of that region protest that decision from a foreign government, it can be easy to think to yourself "oh, but isn't voting good?"

and, yeah, voting is good, when it is used to better society by people who are a part of that society.

when it is being used to take over a society, then you have a situation where democracy is being abused by fascists, and the people who are trying to prevent that abuse, are the people doing the most good for that society.

end tangent.

additionally once the number of people who can vote is less than half the total number of people,

if there's no sort of, structural things, preventing people from doing so,

the people you have taken the voting rights away from will simply overthrow the government.

and so you don't just split people up into groups of "voters" and "non-voters."

you make a lot of groups, each with different rights.

ideally, you make the system so confusing that the different groups fight each other over who deserves what rights instead of fighting you over the fact that they all deserve equal rights.

but, regardless of how confusing you make the system, it will end up having 3 basic groups:

humans, lesser humans, and inhumans.

humans are the people will all of their human rights.

lesser humans have some.

inhumans have none.

and so back to our town example,

maybe once you've gotten 12 people in town to lose their rights to vote, those 12 people start making a lot more noise than you and your 4 friends,

so you take it a step farther; you say "Freddy's really dangerous. Taking away his voting rights wasn't enough; we need to lock him up."

now, as long as you can keep your prison wardens comfortable, you never have to worry about Freddy getting his rights back or enough of Freddy's allies getting together to overthrow your government.

if you can't keep your prison wardens comfortable, then you have to kill Freddy.

The only way to make sure, beyond any doubt, that the people you've taken rights away from never get them back and never return your town back to a normal democracy, is to kill those people.

they cannot vote if they're dead.

and this is where fascism will always lead

in order for fascism to work, in order for a small group of people to gain complete control over a government, people have to die.

and so the people who want power, they have to convince someone, not necessarily you, that those people deserve to die.

and this is hard.

it's not easy to just say, "hey you should kill Freddy" and have a bunch of people go along with that.

So this is back where core fascism comes to play, this idea of splitting people into groups.

Because when we look at a person, and see their humanity, it's very hard for us to say "yeah that person deserves to die."

So you start with the propaganda.

You say "this type of person deserves to die."

and that's a lot easier to convince people of, because they no longer have to think of those people as people.

through your propaganda, you have dehumanized that group of people.

they are inhuman now.

they are no longer guaranteed the right to live.

and the most important thing you need to understand is this:

once you have a group of inhumans, you don't have to make another.

society has already given you permission to kill a type of person.

in order to kill all the people you need to kill in order to keep control of the government, you don't have to convince society that this other group of people is also okay to kill.

you simply have to convince them that that other group of people is already actually part of that first group.

by framing your propaganda this way, you, a fascist, continue to shift the conversation away from "who deserves to die" or even just "who deserves rights" to a conversation about "who falls into this category of person"

and since you're just talking about categories, about groups at this point,

most people will forget that that is a group of people they've given you permission to strip the rights away from or just flat out kill,

and so they are more willing to take part in that conversation, and they are more willing to be convinced of "oh yeah, that person is an undesirable" than they would be of just directly agreeing to the statement "that person deserves to die."

And so going back to our town example, you won't actually just say "we should take away Freddy's right to vote" at the start.

what you'll actually say is "listen, valued members of the town.

I'm a civilized person. you're a civilized person. I think, as civilized people, we can all agree that sex offenders shouldn't be making decisions in this town."

and no one even thinks of Freddy. They just all agree, "yeah, it would be really bad to have a town run entirely by sex offenders."

so you all vote to ban sex offenders from the ballot box, and it passes with a pretty sizeable majority actually, because, after all, who's going to vote against stopping sex offenders?

Then, you say, "hey i think Freddy's a sex offender. He's pretty weird, right?"

"Hey all those people saying we should let Freddy vote again, they're really sympathetic of sex offenders, aren't they?

they're probably secretly sex offenders. We should add them to the list.

For good measure, we should probably kill Freddy."

And you don't have to convince everyone to kill Freddy.

You just have to convince someone.

And that someone will do it for you, and you will face no repercussions for it. because you didn't kill Freddy.

And it doesn't always happen exactly like that, but, and i'm not exaggerating when i say this, without exception, it literally always happens.

Whether it's the state of florida trying to pass increasingly restrictive legislation giving sex offenders life sentences, and then, making the act of "being transgender" a sex offense,

whether it's joe biden and the state of israel using centuries of propaganda portraying muslims and arabs as inherently sexually violent to justify continuing their genocide in palestine,

whether it's donald trump campaigning to deport undocumented immigrants by spewing lies about mexicans being rapists and murderers,

it always happens.

we live in a society where most people already accept that it is okay to take away the rights of so-called "sex offenders."

and it starts with even just simple rights,

not even as far as voting, necessarily,

just the right to be an active member in society.

and this is necessary.

we are a social species. we need to be active members of society in order to live.

the ability to be an active member of society is a basic human right.

and it is the very first right which the sex offender registry takes away from people.

Now, it's not standardized throughout the nation, so in some regions being a registered sex offender takes away more rights than just that,

but at the very least, having your name on a list of people who it is okay to exclude from society,

having your name on a list of undesirables,

that will lead to your being excluded from society, and eventually your untimely death.

And as i've explained, even if you agree on an individual basis that some people deserve that,

there will always be people on the list who, even by your standards, do not.

it is a tool of people who want total political power, and it will expand until they get it,

and you, member of society, will spend the meantime arguing who deserves to be on the list,

advocating for hundreds, potentially thousands, of people who you personally think don't deserve to be on the list,

and yet, if you aren't willing to look deeper and realize that it is a tool of a fascist government that wants to put everyone on at least some list,

then you will never think that maybe there shouldn't be a list at all.

and there shouldn't.

there is no way to make a list of undesirables that will not be misused, exploited, and taken advantage of in such a way that people who do not deserve to be on that list, will be put on it anyways.

so even if, in your opinion, there are people who would deserve to be on that list, the list itself will still always do more harm than good, and it should not exist.

i know we love our ships, and i love the community we have here, and all of you are still so dedicated and amazing, and i couldn’t ask for a better rp group. which is why i’m definitely not just giving up or shutting excesshq down ( don’t worry ) ! but i was wondering how you guys would feel about a complete revamp. a whole facelift to hopefully break up some of the cliquey-ness we’ve got going on on the dash, and an opportunity to bring in new members to get new plots going ! now, to make things fair, we’d have to set a new muse limit, and i know it really, really sucks to give up muses you’re so attached to. but i think it’d be nice to start off fresh with one or two muses and see how it works out. i just think it’d be a great way to get new members and new plots and a brand new spark of muse going !

it’s just something that’s been on my mind a lot recently, and i was curious to know how you guys would feel about it. if you have any further questions / suggestions / comments, feel free to drop ‘em down below or shoot me a message thru my inbox here on sahar !

so i finished reading the northern caves

hey its a book ramble! after uuhhhhhh.. a year. anyways the northern caves! (https://archiveofourown.org/works/3659997/chapters/8088522)

i binged it in a whole day. and i have feelings. i think?

so ppl hyped it as a lovecraft-ish/otherworldly horror story and i think i got a bit sucked into that and let down a bit because to me the horror story wasn’t the implied dark magic connections the author had with uh. the Mundum. it was the unreliable narration and betrayal of friends. spoilers below!

so, if you’ve read the northern caves, you know what the Mundum is. it was just kinda introduced as some mystical thing in the universe that the author believed in. whether or not it was real was kinda left open ended i think.

if you for some reason haven’t read the northern caves (which will just be either the caves or tnc for typing speed’s sake), it’s about a group of online friends in a 2004 internet forum dedicated to a children’s book series called Chesscourt by Leonard Selby. the author died before he could publish his final book, The Northern Caves. thankfully, one of the ppl in the forums, metamarsh, is actually distantly related to the author, and in the event of leonard selby’s death and then marsh’s aunt’s death (i think she was selby’s sister or something), marsh’s family got all the belongings of leonard selby. all his journals, notes, and unpublished works left behind. TNC was one of them. marsh (or his aunt or some other relative) scanned the pages and released it online ig sometime before the story. and so the events of Spelunk 04! starts, in which the friend group of this forum plans an irl meet up at marsh’s house so they can go over the author’s belongings and try to make sense of tnc. tnc is, to put simply, a mess. there’s lucid parts and non-lucid parts, by which i mean that there’s entire pages of nonsense and also it’s mentioned that there are 3 entire pages that are just the letter “a.” this can easily be dismissed as the writings of a senile old man, until the revelation of the Mundum (mentioned above) comes up. 

then things so super wrong. 

so, the entire story is a “report” by a man on the forums named Paul. his handle is GlassWave. he is a person who went to Spelunk 04! and is part of the reason why the meeting went so wrong. around the part where the journals abt the Mundum come up, he totally gets into it. the narration around this part gets uh. kinda creepy. it also definitely doesnt help that there were drugs involved - adderall.

so uh. basically. paul and another guy, Arron/Errent Knight, get the Mundum. they dont understand why their friends dont understand it. the solution according to paul? put adderall into the coffee and stay up for 60 hours straight reading tnc in a group circle.

yeahhhhh.

so i personally wasnt super scared abt the entire lovecraft-ish/other worldly implications of mundum being real or not. it was the paul’s state of mind when he spiked the coffee with drugs. it was the entire betrayal thing. 

i personally haven’t really had the entire internet friends experience bc im p shy irl and online. i dont usually go talk to strangers in chatrooms/discord or anything. also stranger danger lol.

but i hear a bunch of stories abt that kind of stuff, the early 2000′s internet experience before ppl had more awareness of internet stranger danger. also i’ve been watching and reading abt a lot of internet drama thru commentary channels i watch nowadays (therightopinion is p good), and uh the whole parasocial relationship thing (so ive seen it be described as) is on my mind a lot now. since we view ppl as relatable and feel like we know them. now, of course, there’s a difference in the personal experience one can have between a youtuber or internet celeb and a person on an interactive forum/social media platform. i would think that more interactive platforms like forums or discourd would feel more personal to some than a celebrity but still. 

the entire narration of paul’s during the spiking the coffee scene was so rational-seeming to him. and then the betrayal that his friends, the ones at Spelunk 04! and online felt hit me. like, i’ve never personally experienced that kind of betrayal since i dont have internet/stranger friends, but still i think it’s really relevant now. on the 26th chapter (2nd to last), the forum comments of JimWind and Sally’s Lil Sis hit especially hard.

Wow. Wowwowow. I just finished reading the whole thing through the latest bit GW's posted. I had heard things about Spelunk 04 having something to do with restaurant workers dying, but I just figured that was a baseless rumor because it seemed so hard to understand how that could have happened. But what really shocks me here isn't even that, it's the fact that GlassWave dosed his/our friends with hard drugs. (Adderall is just prescription amphetamine, AKA speed! WTF!!!) "GlassHole" indeed! TBH it really makes me uncomfortable with GW and getting this whole story from him. Of course when I first read this

I was flattered, especially cause GW's always seemed like one of the sharpest and nicest posters around these parts (until now!!). But now it kinda makes me sick to my stomach. I don't want this guy to think I'm one of the "best" Cafe people. And I'm holding back judgment on all this Spelunk nonsense until I hear about it from someone WHO ISN'T GLASSWAVE. (Plus, this is stupid, but there's something that makes it even worse about the fact that the diner has my name :P) No matter how you slice it, it's a sad day for the Cafe. D:

Yeah me too JimWind. I'm literally crying rn. First Spelunk went wrong, then we have to wait to hear about what happened, then we finally get the report but it's from this jerk! I'm really sad bc this forum has meant a lot to me over the last year (its been a really tough year for me) and now I'm worried that everyone here might be some sort of drug-pushing creep :( :( :(

before this, everyone felt connected in some way w/ chesscourt and safe. and paul/glasswave was a decent person in the community! he talked to other ppl. ppl trusted him enough to invite him to this thing and meet up irl. and then he just. spikes coffee with adderall.

idk, maybe its just me since i was too young to be on fandom spaces in 2004 and be on chatrooms and stuff, but i feel like when the internet first came out everyone felt safe on it to some degree and the internet and real life were seperate spaces. now, esp with social media like facebook, real life and the internet are super connected. 

the fact that paul caused harm to his friends by spiking their drinks without consent is horrible. but like i feel like to ppl from 2004 who might not have experienced this kind of closely tied internet/real life drama before and also might not have the same sense of internet stranger danger that ppl have today, the idea of a person from the internet harming you in real life could be terrifying. today, i think that horror stories of ppl meeting online and then things going wrong is so common and in the news that we don’t bat an eye to it. but i guess maybe to 2004 ppl, this is like the ultimate nightmare.

when i finished the book, i felt a bit let down by the ending and stuff. it felt a bit anti-climatic. but after thinking about this from (what i think is) a 2004 person’s perspective, this is p awful. and the whole unreliable narration thing was very good.

i thought of midsommar a bit when i was thinking abt the ending. like, sure a bunch of horrible gory stuff happened and ppl died. but the real horror sets in afterwards when you realize that the movie is abt a vulnerable lonely woman in a neglectful relationship being indoctrinated into a cult thru drugs, isolation, and love bombing, and it was kinda shown as a “good thing” bc the protag finally found a place she belonged. when really, she was being further trapped in life, this time in a cult.

idk, but i guess that’s my ramble on the northern caves.

tl;dr - i read an original story from AO3 that was kinda hyped up for a lovecraft-ish horror, but i ended up interpreting the horror aspect differently and didn’t really get the mundum/lovecraft-ish part i think?
