It was early morning, just before first period Spanish, when you finally decided to say something.
“Okay, so I can’t be the only one creeped out by that thing, right?”
You looked around with a sense of judgement as six pairs of eyes immediately whipped around to meet your own. Taking a moment to observe the flower in Annie's hand, and the box of chocolates in Shirley's, you stopped biting at the end of your pen momentarily to gesture at said thing; which just so happened to be your school's mascot.
It was Valentine's day at Greendale community college. Something that, in between your day to day classes and usual group shenanigans, you had forgotten about. If the seven couples french kissing hadn’t reminded you of that enough on your way to the library, the pair of heart shaped boxers draped over the statue outside did.
You had sat down at the study group as usual, expecting Britta’s rant about the patriarchal undertones of the holiday and a well timed meta quip from Abed, but instead all you got was a pair of artificially painted eyes staring at you.
The mascot in question turned to you and made what sounded like an offended gasp as it stopped wheeling its little cart full of gifts. Cards covered in pink hearts and lacey trim overflowed from it, all attached with tacky glue, and you got a good look at one of them as it was sent flying near your forehead.
“Jeez! Sorry, man! I didn’t know this job meant that much to you!” You swiftly ducked under the table to avoid the line of fire. Coming up once the sound of squeaky wheels on carpet faded away, you ended up glowering as Troy laughed at you.
“Shut up, Barnes. Abed got more muffins than you.” You glared, referencing the lack of valentines gifts he'd been given. Troy was quick to choke on his laughter after that. He straightened his posture consciously, only stealing a look or two at the goodie basket placed neatly in front of Abed.
“Great dodge.” The amateur filmmaker praised you in his usual quick pace as you picked up the card from the floor. “If you had been in the Matrix, and that card was a bullet, that would have been the second coolest scene in the movie. Next to the other part where Neo also evades bullets.”
“Neo’s? I have a few friends that are those.”
“Ignoring Pierce's questionable life choices and their daily allotted hazing— ” Jeff sighed from his usual spot next to you, “— I have more important things to discuss. And speaking of which!”
Jeff slouched further into his chair as the door to the study room opened once more. You all watched as an extremely hungover Britta stumbled in, a pair of reflective aviators resting on the brim of her nose.
“Sorry I’m late.” She grumbled. Going to sit down she nearly fell out of the chair, and all of you exchanged various looks. If the way Jeff was smirking at Britta said anything, there was some new weird sexually charged adventure to be had between the two, and you were not ready to be in another one of those. You had done your time last week, and you weren't eager to repeat it.
"Actually, you're very late, Britta. See you later!" You slammed your Spanish textbook down on the table with an overly cheesy smile to punctuate the end of your sentence. Britta jumped at the loud noise, hissing at you to shut up, but you were already walking out of the room by then. If the shuffling behind you told you anything, it was that the rest of the group had done the same. Sans Britta and Jeff, per usual.
You tilted your body sideways as you navigated through the busy hall full of various highschool dropouts and divorced parents, letting the sound of tennis shoes squeaking against the floors bounce around in your head. It was more annoying than usual today, and it took you a second to realize that it wasn't the shoes making the noise, but rather Troy as he called after you.
“Hey! Hey! Wait up!" He wheezed. "You are very fast when you want to be!” The athlete gasped for breath when you finally slowed down. Coming to a stop as you turned around to face him, you saw another pair of legs enter your line of sight. This time much thinner, and accompanied with a wicker basket full of various baked goodies.
“Troy, I know you like to have someone hold your hand as you walk to class, but normally that's Abed’s job. Please don't allow me to take that pleasure from him.” You said, face completely blank. If you looked hard enough, you thought Abed’s nose flared a bit to insinuate a laugh.
“No, that’s not what I'm here to— hey how did you know that?” Troy took another gulp of air as his brows furrowed.
“I took a guess based on the way both your bodies and hands are angled apart each morning as you walk into Senior Chang’s class. Also, when you eat Cheetos, it rubs off onto the back of Abed's palm.”
“I don't eat Cheetos that much.” Troy frowned. “Do I? For the record I am not gay." Troy made sure to ennunciate that last part as he stared you down. His facial expression reminded you of a nervous first grader doing a bad job in their school play.
“You do, and that's not important right now.” Abed answered back. His head snapped to you with the same amount of intensity that he always got when thinking of a movie reference, and you got the sense he was holding back for the sake of the conversation.
Raising both eyebrows, you motioned for them to go on. The hallway was clearing out a bit more, and you didn't want to be caught late for Changs class a third time in a row. Last time he threatened to beat you with maracas, and you wouldn't put it past him to actually carry through with it this time.
“Listen, we have something important to say.” Troy began. Abed backed him up with a furious nod, or his equivalent of it. Which really just boiled down to a regular paced nod.
"Is this about Valentine's day? You should ask Shirley about that."
"Come on man!" Troy threw his hands in the air, turning away from the both of you and crossing his arms. "How did you possibly come to that conclusion so fast?!"
"We were just talking about us holding hands."
"Thank you Abed." The both of you said at the same time. Albeit Troy with a little more teeth grinding then nessicary.
"Did you become a ninja overnight? Did you take a ninja class?" Troy took a step forward as he pointed his forefinger in your face. You stared at it as it approached, going cross-eyed momentarily.
"Yes. And if you did, I would like the name to that class." Abed pipped up.
"No, I didn't go to a ninja class." You said while pushing Troy's arm down. "Does this mean I'm right?"
The lack of response from Troy and Abed's unbothered expression provided you with your answer.
"Are you two trying to ask for dating advice or something?" You frowned as you started to walk in the direction of Spanish. Both of them followed as you fixed your backpack strap. "Because if so, Troy you could learn a lot from Abed. And Abed, if you're having a problem, I don't know how to make you anymore appealing to the ladies than you already are."
"It's true." He responded, looking off into what he probably thought was the fourth wall. "I am devilishly irresistible."
"Stop that!" Troy waved his hand in front of his friends face, bringing both their attentions back to you. "Listen. We were wondering how to go about asking the same person to the dance tonight."
"Oh. So like a love triangle thing? I never liked that troupe."
"No no." Troy shut his eyes as he shook his head. "More of like, uh—"
"Neither of us exactly know." Abed cut Troy off in a matter of fact manor. "We both see ourselves hanging out with them at the dance, but aren't exactly jealous of the other being there too."
"If you wanted me to I could crack open Websters dictionary to find a word for that."
"No thank you." Abed echoed. You simply shrugged.
"Okay. So what do you want me to do about it?" You questioned while turning a corner to another hallway. The three of you were nearly at Spanish now, but this conversation had pulled you in more than conjugating verbs ever could.
"We don't. Exactly know how to ask this person to go to the dance." Troy sucked in a breath.
"You guys have seen plenty of movies. Do the typical thing. Flowers, chocolate, and not what they do in your sci-fi movies Abed." You grinned at him knowingly as you passed through the doorway to class. "Personally I'd take kickpunching robots over literally anything ever, but I tend to be the exception for most things."
"It's not a date though. It's, like, three really close people hanging out. Not in a gay way though! I like girls! With boobs. Yes." Troy stammered as you all plopped into your rickety seats.
"Nice save Troy." Senior Chang called from the front of class with a snicker. He brought his feet down off his teachers desk to lean forward and cup his hands around his mouth. "Or should I call you gay-lord!"
"I really hate this language requirement." Troy grumbled, sinking into his chair. You snorted as Abed stiffly reached his hand out to pat his shoulder, making robot sounds as he did so.
"Cheer up." You allowed yourself a shit eating grin. "It is Valentine's day after all."

“Well that was a disaster.” You said over the sound of a ringing bell. Students and teachers alike passed you and Annie by as the two of you made your way through the hall, neither of them seeming to care very much if they bumped into you or not. To say that’d you’d almost gotten into a fight or two due to traffic here would be an understatement.
“I don’t know.” Annie frowned. She brushed her hair out of her face and clutched her books to the front of her chest. You made a face subconsciously, the sight reminding you all too much of the stereotypical school girl. “I thought it was very mean of Senior Chang to do that to Troy! And Pierce, I guess.”
“Annie. He called a balding senior citizen and a lonely freshman out on their sad Valentine’s Day gifts to themselves. It’s Chang. Of course it’s mean. But mean things can also be also be disasters.”
The girl next to you seemed to think about your words for a second. Furrowing her brows once or twice, she eventually let out what you could only describe as a harumph.
“Well I think we should do something about it!”
“Pass.” You said without a seconds hesitation. Annie deflated a bit at that and eyed the tips of her shoes. You stole a look down at her, and let out a sigh.
“You know me. I’m such a big fan of sticking my nose in other peoples business when it doesn’t belong— “ Sarcasm. “— but I think you and Shirley would be a better duo for this. She’s ruthless when she sets her mind to it, and you’re crafty in the way that you could have written the script for the movie Seven if you wanted to. Probably.”
“Aww thanks! I think.” Annie beamed. She regained some pep in her step as she skipped ahead of you, only turning back to say one more thing to you. “No wonder Troy and Abed like to talk about you so much. So many obscure movie references between you guys. Cute!”
“Seven was a box office hit, Annie— “ You began with the hint of a frown tugging at your lips, but she was already off. No doubt to find Shirley before lunch so they could cook up their plan in a flurry of giggles. That only left you with one more question.
“They talk about me?”

Jeff huffed as he walked into the near empty classroom. His hands, which he had spent the last three minutes nervously slathering in expensive lotion as a part of his mid-day exfoliation routine, were stuffed deep into his jacket pockets. He wasn’t exactly looking forward to this interaction, but sometimes he’d throw his better judgment out the window. Sometimes.
Raising a single eyebrow, he glanced around at the spare video equipment set up; the bulk of which was sat right in front of his target. The former lawyer ignored as a kid in a yellow button up kicked a trash can across the room, instead making a beeline for Abed. Who was giving directions rather loudly to the angry kid.
“Wow. Do you normally deal with divas like this?” Jeff flashed his signature charming smile while commenting on the temper tantrum. Better to be friendly and break the ice rather than dive right in. Otherwise you’d scare people off. He learned that while working at the firm.
“One Papa Johns commercial, and he thinks he’s Christian Bale.” Abed pursed his lips comically.
“Look, uh— “ Jeff began to steer away from the topic of the questionable kid as he pulls Abed’s attention in. “You were right earlier. During Spanish. Britta is being weird around me, and I don’t know what to do about it.”
“By being right, do you mean my prediction that the accidental booty call she sent you while drunk is going to cause the imminent breakup of our fragile group?”
Jeff blinked.
“Yeah. That.” He spat out.
“Nice. So what can I do for you?” Abed leaned back into his makeshift directors chair while crossing his legs. “Do you need a drunk voicemail of your own to send to her so the score will be evened? Because I have nowhere to be for the next twenty four hours and personal dilema to avoid.”
Jeff inhaled with the intent to bulldoze over the younger mans statement, but ended up falling flat.
“Ignoring that last part, yeah I do, actually. How did you know that?” He squinted. Jeff would never admit it, but sometimes it creeped him out how easily Abed could predict what people would say next.
“Classic sitcom staple.” Abed shrugged without changing his expression one bit. “Goes hand in hand with the booty call. Now— “ He leaned forward with a glint in his eye. One that Jeff didn’t quite like.
“How well can you act?”

You don’t know how you ended up here, and you had been ready to leave the moment you arrived.
A faint punch stain from years ago sat at the hem off of your slacks, reminiscent of a house party from a year ago that had ended in disarray. They were the good slacks too. Paired with what was thankfully an unstained button up polo shirt. This was the closest anyone was going get to fancy from you tonight.
Various pink and red hues cascaded across the dance floor, playing into the Valentine’s Day theme as the schools mascot continued to prowl around on the dance floor. You were sure that the dean would be happy with himself over that if it wasn’t for the fact that couples were making out everywhere. It was pretty fun watching him try to break them all up, actually. You’d made a little game out of it with how long you’d been standing at the punch table.
The toe of your shoe came in contact with a stray balloon from one of the tables centerpieces. With a downward twitch of your lips, you picked the rubbery material up into your hands and started messing with it. Sounds of latex on skin distracted you from all of the screeching and poor singing.
“Not having a lot of fun, huh?” A voice from your left asked.
Glancing near the onion rings that had been laid out as finger food, you saw the familiar form Britta peering at you from under some fake eyelashes. That would have been more of a shock to you if the skimpy red dress she was wearing didn’t overshadow it.
“Hey there.” You avoided her question as you threw the balloon back into the crowd it had come from. “Great disco ball costume. Very sparkly.”
“Ha ha.” She mocked you before crossing your arms. “For the record, I still think Valentine’s Day is a sham. I’m just doing this to see Jeff squirm.”
“Ah. Well then, I’m sure all of the women out there will forgive you for your transgressions.” You teased her with an empty smile.
Britta let out a cross between a laugh and a huff, gaze straying from you to look out at the mass you launched your balloon into. Occasionally someone in unusually high heels would fall, only to be swept back up into the bobbing heads.
“Have you talked to Troy lately?” Britta cut in suddenly. The tone of her voice made you narrow your eyes, and you hummed out a suspicious no.
“That question is both too casual and well delivered on a night like this to have come from you. What’s going on.” You had fully abandoned kicking around stray balloons for talking with her. Or at least, staring at her forehead while she talked. You didn’t know if you could manage eye contact right now.
“He was looking for you earlier at lunch. While sweating. A lot.” Britta scrunched her nose up as if she could still smell the body odor. “Sounded like he wanted to ask you something.”
You looked away from her for a moment, temporarily overcome with a feeling of nausea.
“Oh, yeah. My bad. I was in the study room.” A pause. “Studying.”
“Troy said that he checked there beforehand.” It was Britta’s turn to squint at you. “Why are you the one acting weird now?”
Rubbing at the back of your neck proved as a temporary relief to her question. Inhaling through your mouth, you pulled out your phone and messed with it for a second.
“I got a weird voicemail from Abed today. The main part is him talking to me about the dance scene from Breakfast Club, I think, and some weird phone thing with Jeff and you— " Britta coughed into her hand at that “— but the last few seconds really threw me.”
You opened your mouth to continue the story, but quickly shut it once you saw that Britta wasn’t paying attention anymore. You didn’t even have to follow her line of sight to know she was staring at a dejected looking Jeff— who had been standing by the cusp of the exit for six minutes now. You didn’t even have to nod at her to go before she took off, awkwardly waddling in her stilletos in an attempt to not trip.
It only took a few more minutes of watching the two of them go back and forth for you to give up on anything exciting happening to you. With a halfhearted grumble, you took one last grab at the punch bowl before starting towards the double doors. You hoped the juice had been spiked. If you made all this effort to show up to some lame school thing, might as well get a little tipsy.
“Well this is awkward.”
A harsh cough came from your throat as you choked on your own spit.  In an attempt to make yourself feel better, you turned around to glare at whoever had scared you, only to start coughing more.
“Abed?” You wheezed. Letting out another round of coughs, you caught a glimpse of yourself in the reflection of the sunglasses on his face.
“I came as fast as I could when I realized Troy was stuck as Senior Changs whore for the night.” He looked at you calmly as you continued to die a little right in front of him.
Finally taking one more gulp of punch from the table, you calmed down enough to string together a sentence.
“What the hell are you talking about?”
“Let me explain for any in the audience that might have missed it while in the bathroom.” Abed held up a finger. All you could do was deadpan weakly at him.
“Both Troy and I approached you a little bit ago saying that we had something important to say to you. He worded it wrong. We were supposed to ask you something, not tell you. Instead, Troy allowed Senior Chang’s torture to ruin that question, and later I with Jeff and Britta’s voicemail problems”
“Their what’s? What is going on with voicemails today.”
“Not important.” Abed carried on. “What’s important is that while I was fulfilling the spot of Jeff’s drinking buddy, I realized something.”
“That you shouldn’t be drinking??” You questioned wildly. It was beginning to feel like this night was a special episode in a really bad main cable show. Either that or this place was finally getting to you.
“No. I realized that while Troy was fitting himself and Pierce into extra tight women’s suits, that we would miss the opportunity to ask you what we wanted to. I called Troy to tell him to go look for you, but only after sending a call to you that I do not remember the contents of. I assume you have it?” He blinked owlishly.
With a pair of very wide and very confused eyes, you grabbed your phone for the second time that night and shook it with a loose wrist. The audio from a few hours ago began to play faintly. It’s sound was swallowed by the bass of the dances music, but the both of you could still make the words out. Abed’s voice tumbled out at twice the speed it normally does, his energy no doubt heightened by alcohol.
“— e’re sort of like Marty McFly and Jennifer Parker, but there’s three of us. Have you seen the second movie? I need to show you the second movie. There’s more of Jennifer in that than the first. And Martys mom isn’t trying to get with him. Oh, and you don’t have to have a time traveling car for us to want to go to the dance with you. Although that would be nice. Jeff stop drooling on tha —"
Abed looked at it silently as the message continued to run. It was as if he expected nothing more from its contents. For a second you wondered how he’d react to the twenty minutes before that where all he talks about is Breakfast Club, but you figured it would be the same.
The feeling of nausea from earlier was back, and this time was trying to crawl out of your throat with a ferocity. Swallowing both your nerves and that not so metaphorical metaphor, you inhaled.
“So. Troy’s okay with this?” You asked cautiously, as if this was a dubious prank. Abed nodded almost immediately after you asked. The nausea subsided.
“And you’re okay with this?”
Another nod.
“Alright.” You shuffled. It felt like ten pounds had been lifted off your chest, and you didn't know how to express that. “I’ll go to the dance. With the both of you.”
A brief period of silence stretched between the two of you. The lights continued to flair, and the music continued to shake the floorboards, but none of you moved.
“Abed?”
“Sorry. You made me so happy I peed a little, and didn’t want to say anything.”
The corner of your mouth lifted up once. Twice. It only took one more time for a tirade of laughter to escape you all in one go. Abed’s unmoving expression just watched as you laughed to yourself, waiting patiently until you had stopped. When you paused to catch your breath, Abed placed a hand on your shoulder and looked up at the ceiling thoughtfully.
“Normally this doesn’t happen in shows.” He hummed. “Do you think that this is a way of adding some diversity in the form of a polyamorous couple at a community college?”
“How about no lables?” You suggested. “It feels weird. What if it was just me, you, and Troy for now.”
Abed repeated your words under his breath, mumbling a little. He lifted his head back up to you with his thought on the proposition, which arrived in the form of a steady thumbs up.
“Cool. Cool cool cool.” You grinned at him. Abed’s nose flared at your use of his unspoken catchphrase, and he turned away from you to cup his hands around his mouth.
"They said yes!" He told the figure dancing on the floor; the likes of which responded with a yell of victory before getting back to it. It took you a minute to get past the skintight blue suit and floral scarf to realize who it was.
"Troy?!" You sputtered with an open mouth. He looked at you at the mention of his name with a painful smile before turning back to his dance partner with a dramatic sob.
"What is he wearing? And why is Senior Chang— oh god." Your eyes widened, unable to look away. "I think I'm going to puke."
"It's better if you don't question it." Abed told you, his hand just a few inches shy of touching his eyes as he hid behind it.
"Give me your hand Abed." You said blankly. Without questioning you, he held it out. You were quick to sheild your own eyes from the dancing.
"So." You turned your head to look at him after a moment of gross silence, both of his hands still in the air. "Movie date tonight when Troy is released from captivity?"
"I've been waiting forever for you to ask that."

Courage is a Prerequisite
CW: Eddie being kinda a jerk to reader at first, Aged up Characters, reference to nude pictures, mostly fluff, no smut
Eddie Munson/You
Word count: 1615
⚔️ ⚔️ ⚔️
You found that cursed flyer in the Roane County Community College Library, tacked to the bulletin board.
You joined the group with some hesitation, but they were mostly cool.
Mostly dudes, quite a few graduates from Hawkin’s High, and a few current high school seniors. Including, your favorite - Dustin Henderson - the adorable little brother you always wished for.
Dustin was funny and welcoming and had a way of knowing (like magic) how to shut down arguments among the party. He was the social director for the group. Always throwing parties for everyone’s birthdays and organizing secret gift exchanges and creating sign up sheets for potlucks. He had a gift for getting people to be involved and do things.
Dustin could even influence the group’s Dungeon Master.
Eddie was 25 years old, a mechanic by day, a gifted lead guitarist every other Friday, an artist, whip-smart, and devastatingly hot but SOOOOO Annoying!!
Somehow Dustin had figured out how to make Eddie Munson (who absolutely still complained everytime) to come to these other events and on time and with his assigned snacks.
Eddie was respectful as a Dungeon Master but out of game, sometimes, he was just mean to you for no goddam reason. Sometimes he would be all teasy-flirty with you and then make fun of you if you flirted back.
The third session you attended maybe dressed up a bit (just to look cute) maybe a little to get his attention. Eddie looked you over and called you a ‘dirty slut’. He was ‘joking’ or whatever... when you got angry he said he meant the outfit looked hot (not you though - specifically your outfit) and he was “sorry for joking around” but ever since you had been holding this grudge...
Anyway - Dickish DM aside - the group was great.
⚔️ ⚔️ ⚔️
About two months into the current Campaign (and 2 dead characters - murdered by the dick DM in collusion with your bad die rolls), at the end of a long but admittedly exciting game night, everyone was packing up to go.
Jeff and Eddie were in a heated argument about who would win in a fight between Captain Kirk and Han Solo.
But you stopped listening to that silliness because Dustin approached you, “Can I ask for some advice?”
Aww - he came to you for advice. It warmed your heart that he wanted to open up to you about his worries. He was such a cutie-goober. Equal parts of both.
“Suzie’s mad at me,” he sighed.
“What’d you do?” You asked. Because little-dude was a Goober. And Suzie was pretty easy-going from what you could tell.
Dustin looked uncomfortable, and he near-whispered, “We were sending dot matrix converted pictures of each other - our school pictures - through web email and I asked if she would show me something... lower.”
“Dustin.” The rebuke in your voice was mild. As was the offense in your opinion. They’d been together (long distance) for years, you’d have asked for naughty pictures too in that situation.
You still clicked your tongue at him, though.
“I know, I know,” he took off his ball cap and ran his hands through his long curly hair, “... but I can’t help wondering... you know upstairs-outsidies is as far as we got at Camp Know Where and I said I want her to be my girl and she said ‘forever’ and so...”
“The ‘net is a wild place right now, man, that’s a crazy trust exercise for you to ask for! What if someone hacks in and takes the pictures?!” You shook your head at the audacity.
“Or my mom could find them printed out. I know, I know and I apologized and told her I'd keep my hormones in check - but I don’t think she’s forgiven me and she’s just so pretty and I love her - and I don’t want her to be mad at me anymore for being a stereotypical gross hornball dude.”
“I don’t think she’s mad at you for wanting to see her naked. I know she’s in that very religious *cough Cult* household but like Guys don’t have a monopoly on hormones and desire and shit.” You tapped your pencil with the troll eraser topper against your cheek pondering this... “Personally, I’d feel more comfortable mailing polaroids of my body than sending them in electronic mail. It feels safer...”
A familiar voice danced into your ears. “Oh, would you?? Is there a mailing list I should sign up for?” Of course DM Eddie was eavesdropping and interrupting players, his favorite pastimes.
“This is an A and B conversation, Munson, you can C your way out of it.” You snarked.
“I don’t think so, Sweetheart. Ya’ see - Dustin is asking for advice from You,” he narrowed his eyes and leaned in - it would be menacing if he wasn’t equal parts goofy and pretty - those freckles across his pretty face..., “ You - our newest member, and I’ve known Dustin longer - I’m gonna have a better understanding of his whole situation.” He cocked his head forward and his hair flew around - it was so stupid pretty.. .Annoying. It was so Annoying. “I’ve got seniority here, dollface.” he looked back and forth between you. “So what’s the situation?”
Dustin cleared his throat to start explaining but you forced a laugh and put up a finger in the air, “I wouldn’t ask Munson to advise me out of a wet paper bag.”
Eddie made a noise between a scoff and a hurt gasp but his eyes sparkled. “I would never give Dustin bad advice.” he looked at Dustin, “Didn’t I help you THIS session, to avoid pissing off that Djinni prince??”
“Of course you know the answers In Game when you are a Big Bad Serious DM.” You put your hands on your hips. “This is real life. Dustin doesn’t want to mess things up with Suzie.”
“Wait? Is Suzie a real person?” Eddie smirked. This was a common bit- the whole group (with yourself, Will, and Mike as the notable exceptions) teased Dustin about his long distance girlfriend not being real. Of course they hadn’t been in chat rooms with her like you had. She had a LOT of personality and no AI was that sophisticated...
yet.
Dustin didn’t even dignify the jab with a response. He just looked at you with pain in his eyes. “So, how do I make her forgive me?”
“You don’t.” You said. And both guys looked like you slapped their individual faces (!). “I mean, you can’t MAKE someone forgive you, Dustin! You need to be brave. You can only work to figure out what really happened, then apologize - a real apology that shows understanding of her feelings and concerns - and promise to do better. And I think she doesn’t want to hear you say you are ‘sorry for wanting to see her naked’ because that’s probably not what pissed her off and ... it’s not true, is it?”
Dustin nodded. “Yeah. Okay, okay, I can do that.” Clearly listening and processing this, “Hey - can I get a ride home?”
“I’d love to, Buddy, but my car is broken again.” You shrugged. “I biked.”
“What’d you do to her now??” Eddie groused.
“Nothing!! she’s just old.” You snapped.
“You need to do regular maintenance, I’ve told you this before - fer cryin’ out loud! Is the engine smoking again?” Eddie griped.
“Yes - Eddie! You Know I can’t afford regular oil changes. Not at the rate you recommend.”
Dustin cleared his throat. “Eddie, can you drive us both home?” He smiled with his little brother energy and Eddie replied,
“Of course, dude, grab your stuff.” And to you. “You coming?” All weird and stilted like he didn’t want to give you a ride and You’d Honestly Rather not impose and subject yourself to more of his BS, but It was Raining.
Eddie helped you heft your bike into the back of his van. He wouldn’t make eye contact with you though.
Dustin kept you both on safe-non-argument-inducing topics on the ride to his place. But then you were alone with Eddie. So it was inevitable that he would start some shit with you.
He licked his upper lip and turned towards you in the back. “Can you come up here, please, I’ll feel less like your chauffeur.”
“You’d make a terrible chauffeur.” You said conversationally as you got into the front and sank into the plush seat, crossing your arms over your chest.
Eddie looked like he was gonna start a fight with you again but then sighed, drooped, his hair falling in his face. “I’m... sorry.”
Did he just say that?? Really??
“I’m sorry I said you looked like a dirty slut.” His words were suddenly coming at you like a verbal deluge. Drowning you in sincerity?? He was capable of Sincerity?? “I’m sorry... that I said ... that I was joking. What I should have said is... I always think you look hot and it’s distracting sometimes when I’m trying to be a big bad serious DM, and you are in these tight jeans and shit and I don’t want... to fight with you anymore. I want us to be close. Like you and Dustin apparently are. Friends. If you can be friends with a guy who finds you attractive. Please. I’ll... I’ll do better.”
He turned toward you and his eyes were so big and pretty. His sexy lips were saying impossible things. Maybe you hit your head earlier and are currently passed out or this is a dream or...
“I promise. I can be a good friend. I can.” He sounded a tad unsure.
“Eddie, I can't just be friends with you. I’m into you. I’m totally bonkers crazy about you.”
“Oh.” For a moment he looked confused. Still sad. Contemplative.
And then the trademark smirk came back. “So, that means you want to be more than friends with me?”

Oh god, I've been so excited to show this The Matrix piece to everyone. It's a gift for an exchange that is happening at a neotrin server and I got a prompt of Trinity in chainmail that sorta goes into this Knight!Trinity pipeline, an idea that everyone in the server really dig? So I just went all out on it.
Of course I have to draw Princess Neo. And yes, if you're noticing, Neo's outfit draws huge inspo from Shoujo Kakumei Utena, mixed with his original M2 outfit.
I put a lot of dear dedication while doing this and I'm glad everybody, including the person I'm giving this to, loves it. This is something 13 year old me could only ever dream drawing and lo and behold lil' Miu, you did this 💕 Takes 21 years lol but definitely worth it.
I created a playlist specifically to help me draw this, which filled with 2000s magical girl-esque anime songs, Madoka Magica OST (and many other Yuki Kajiura works) and of course with Rinbu ~ REVOLUTION by Masami Okui leading the track. Listen to it here if you want to.

What are some Gallifreyan wedding traditions (eg. standard vows, laws surrounding what counts as consummation, etc)
What are some Gallifreyan wedding traditions?
This is something we know sod all about, and there's literally not even enough information to draw any kind of vaguely probable conclusion. I recommend a quick read of the below post, then come back:
Some wild theories™ continue below:
🏛️ Alliances and Contracts
Marriages on Gallifrey often serve as strategic alliances between powerful Houses. These strengthen political positions, secure resources, and ensure the continuation of influential bloodlines.
Marriages might be arranged by the elders of the Houses, making personal choice a secondary role.
Intricate contracts might be drawn up before the wedding, detailing the terms of the alliance, each party's responsibilities, and any dowries or exchanges involved.
These contracts might be recorded in the Matrix, preserving them for future reference.
💍 The Ceremony
The bride and groom traditionally wear white, the Gallifreyan colour for the personification of Death. It might be a nod to the eternal nature of their commitment.
Long hair is braided, possibly interwoven with strands representing their House colours or symbols. This might signify the intertwining of their lives.
Instead of verbal vows, the couple might exchange telepathic vows, creating a mental link that lets them share thoughts and emotions during the ceremony.
These vows could be recorded in their biodata, like tattooing yourself with the name of your beloved.
📜 Consummation and Legalities
Consummation probably isn't a physical union. It could be a merging of biodata or a psionic union.
The act could be ritualistic, involving ancient rites of the Eternals.
For the marriage to be legally recognised, it might be registered with the Capitol and logged in the Matrix.
Witnesses from both Houses might be required to sign off on the union.
🎉 Post-Ceremony Traditions
The couple might create a time capsule filled with mementoes from their Houses and personal artefacts, which is then sent to a future date as a testament to their union's longevity.
As a gift to each other, the couple might weave a part of their biodata into a shared artefact, like a pendant or a ring.
The wedding feast might be an outrageously lavish affair, held in the grand halls of the Capitol or the House estates.
Celebrations might last for days, with each House showcasing its history and achievements like an Olympic host opening ceremony.
🏫 So ...
While much of Gallifreyan wedding traditions are a complete unknown, we've had a shot at some ideas that may or may not exist, and I'll leave it to you good people to decide or make your own.

So I was replaying Birds with Broken Wings for about the 4th time and got caught up in my head about something. So Mi would gift V with things throughout the story—the things most notable which aren't tied into the FIA op (but are more of a personal nature) such as unlocking the Relic's combat abilities, showing V her favorite spot in Dogtown that reminds her of Brooklyn and the Quantum Tuner along with a little souvenir trinket from Tycho. I found these gifts quite thoughtful of So Mi.
Then I got to thinking about V making the effort to do something nice for her in return. Unprompted. Something personal. V's used to receiving things of monetary value in return for gigs and stuff on the side, right? Yeah, yeah, the neutral matrix and the high stakes, I know but that's not the point I'm trying to make.
What if when they meet again (like V going to Tycho City or So Mi making her way back to earth), V sets something up? Like a nice getaway where they can eat scop dogs, enjoy a great view, see some twinkling lights and simply enjoy each other's company? Thoughts can take root where So Mi wonders if V's decision to push through to the end and save her life over their own wasn't only a selfless choice but because there was deeper feelings rooted underneath.
She considers maybe this person truly cares about me beyond what I'm capable of and could even love me like no one ever really has. Love has many different forms, expressions and meanings after all.
Maybe she attempts to speak directly about everything that transpired in Dogtown but V just shrugs it off with a little smile, tells her that the past is the past. What mattered is that they both were still breathing. There's a quiet "I'm sorry, V. For everything, truly," and a reply of, "There's nothing to forgive. Just glad we can see each other again. Kinda felt like our time was cut short so I guess this is me tryin' to make up for that." Cue V being the one to reach out and hold her hand, a quiet moment ensuing accompanied by smiles.
Perhaps I'm just being wishful but I think it would be really sweet if V did something thoughtful for her. Don't even get me talking about my feelings regarding V complimenting So Mi on her dress and the reaction it got along with the countless times they exchanged tender and reassuring touches. My heart explodes every single time.
Would love to hear people's thoughts in the tags or comments.

Seventeen Destiny Matrix 🔮 Jeonghan
hello, this is kyeranmari ⋆.ೃ࿔*:・
welcome to the first installment of my seventeen destiny matrix readings!
since this is a special time, i'd like to start by reading into the destiny matrix chart of my ult bias: jeonghan ⋆˚。୨୧˚
Tumblr media
in particular, i'd like to explore his central arcana.
Tumblr media
for those who aren't familiar, the central arcana is basically the energy that lives in your core. similar to your sun sign in astrology, this is the energy that sort of...summarizes all the other aspects & energies you can find in your chart. this is who you are in your most comfortable state.
jeonghan's central arcana is symbolized by the number 4. this is the energy of the emperor.
Tumblr media
often associated with "authority, leadership, control, and structure", the emperor is regarded as one of the most powerful energies in all of tarot and numerology. having this in any aspect of your destiny matrix chart calls you to take lead, be dutiful, be in control, and/or be organized. in addition, this also signifies that you have a natural talent for resolving problems, guiding people, making salient decisions, and establishing solid foundations.
and we've seen evidences of these in jeonghan's life and his relationship with seventeen.
one that sticks out to me is, in the first episode of game caterers x seventeen, it was revealed that jeonghan had a very vital role in the group. he was the boys' main confidant and counselor.
he claims that he does this because he doesn't do much in the team (which i absolutely 100% disagree with), and so he took the role of listening and guiding them through their woes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyone who has been in this position had once or has constantly wondered why people come to them with the trust that they have the right answers for their problems. and more often than not, they fail to recognize that it is because of their natural gift of wisdom that draws people in.
although i don't know how their exchanges go in particular, as someone with the empress at their core, i could infer that the themes and language of the wisdom they seek from jeonghan is more objective and structural (unlike that of the empress' affective and spiritual approach). despite na pd characterizing jeonghan's role as "motherly", i'd like to argue that jeonghan's approach might be more of a "dad's way" of looking at the world. i am in no way claiming that this approach is unemotional. rather, it's probably more focused on "what are you gonna do about it?" than "how are you feeling about it?"
people with the emperor at the center are generally caring people. they make taking care of the things they love their duty and responsibility. you can expect them to be committed to giving love and affection.
and we could see jeonghan embody this trait through his most recent series called haniwajjong, a special spin to i-goya (his svt rec series) consisting of all the vlogs he filmed starting from september of 2023. according to him, he did this so that carats could have something to watch while he's in the period of military service.
Tumblr media
i would be lying if i say i don't find this so touching, that it almost brings me to tears. as a jjongjjongiefan, i couldn't help but miss him a heck ton, even though i used to say that i won't be emotional about it. but alas, and behold! my ult bias is dedicated to caring about his fans. he didn't have to do this. no one asked for it. but he did it out of his own volition.
he found a way to resolve the dilemma between his civic duties and his deemed responsibility as an idol. this, to me, is how he embodies the energy of the emperor the most. im trying not to cry.
people like jeonghan who hold the emperor at their center are also blessed with wit, strategy, and competency to the point of victory. you know that they're in their best state when they win or they're in a situation where they can exercise these qualities.
this explains why jeonghan is just unbelievably good at every game and every sport he participates in. remember when they dedicated a whole going seventeen series (one million won) just so seventeen can have a chance to beat him?
Tumblr media
jeonghan shines best in gose series that make use of strategy and brain power (one million won, liar liar, catch stock, don't lie, good offer).
not to mention, he's also athletic as fuck. any carat who's watched at least half of the entirety of going seventeen knows how the members are always drawn to him during physical team games. this moment from game caterers x seventeen is one of my favorites.
Tumblr media
because it's in this same show that he's opened up about his energy "deficiency" (he's so my bias here because me too), and yet we see him still play so well, proving that his athleticism stems from a natural gift of it.
jeonghan's smarts go beyond his entertainment career, though, as he's currently pursuing his mba in anyang university. prior to this, he graduated with a degree in practical music (major in k-pop) from hanyang university's institute for future talents. which makes sense, though, as education is important to seventeen as a group themselves!
Tumblr media
oh, and another thing!
something one must remember about the emperor is that this card/number has the energy of the divine masculine. in pop culture (on tiktok, specifically, ugh), the divine masculine is often associated with a man who's strong, well-built, powerful, and is a provider. think a hunky ceo with slicked back hair, a clean beard, with his head always in the game. he's always quiet and observant, always watching like an omnipotent being. however, i'd like everyone to understand that while this could be a result of having the emperor in your chart if you're a man, this isn't the one true image of it.
i mentioned this because i know people might be curious about this aspect, too. but quite honestly, i don't want to elaborate on this much as someone's sexuality is even more personal than the aspects i mentioned above.
all i can say is that to me, jeonghan deserves to be the face of divine masculinity more than the average man. because apart from looking godly (taking the literal meaning of divine here just for the giggles), jeonghan expresses his masculinity to us in such a comfortable way. i can't help but appreciate the complexity of his character. to me, jeonghan is what masculinity looks like if it had evolutions, and he's the final form.
besides, didn't seungcheol mention somewhere that jeonghan is the manliest out of all of them? like...look at him....im....weak
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
if you think i have a preference for long, black-haired jeonghan no i don't i swear i-
in conclusion, it's not surprising that a lot of people love and rely on jeonghan. he has such an admirable and inspiring core that naturally draws people to him. he inspires action within other people, whether it by simply breathing or by using his cutieful antics. to me, he's the perfect caricature of what a man should be.
a true reflection of the emperor at the core.
----------
notes: as i've mentioned in this post, i'll be using seventeen's destiny matrix charts as a way to hone my skills as a reader. i'd also like to note the readings i do may contain inaccuracies as there are a lot of factors that prevent me from reading accurately. though i'm familiar with divination, i'm still at the starting point of my journey in practicing it. plus, i don't know seventeen personally, so i'm basing my readings based off of the things they show us. ⋆✴︎˚。⋆
i'll also be taking it slow for now, only sharing bits and pieces of information as it takes a lot of energy to read and find supporting materials. so forgive me if the information you might be looking for isn't in any of my readings today and in the future! joesorryhamnida 人´∀`)
if you have additional input, corrections, and/or questions, please don't hesitate to share them! i'd love to learn with & from my fellow carats ✧ദ്ദി( ˶^ᗜ^˶ ) so let's yap about this together!
anyway, if you've made it this far, thank you so much for having the patience to read through! i know it's a lot of ramble & reflection, but i appreciate your attention! ⸜(。˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝♡
see ya in the next post, caratdeul ദ്ദി(。•̀ ,<)~✩‧₊
p.s. i love you and i miss you so much jeonghan ૮(˶ㅠ︿ㅠ)ა please take care always my love (ෆ˙ᵕ˙ෆ)♡

Fics of the week
Decided I would start doing a roundup of fics that I have been enjoying over the week for your enjoyment and my own.
The 12 Days of Christmas 2020, 2021 and 2022 by Her_Madjesty
Annual collections of fic based on Hero/Don John from Much Ado About Nothing which I have devoured over this last week. Most of them are AUs of one form or another. The Porco Rosso and Great Gatsby AUs were particularly *chefs kiss*
Bluebride by Teal_Individual
Roxanne may not be the first bride Megamind has taken, but she certainly is the most determined. One way or another, whether for spite or justice or love, she intends to be the last. Loosely based on Bluebeard, historical romances are my jam and the interactions between Roxanne, Megamind and Minion in this one are spot on!
a deep but dazzling darkness by Lirazel
A deep and abiding favourite from one of my favourite movies with ZERO fandom. The Vast of Night is about two teenagers manning the local switchboard and radio station one evening in a small town in Cayuga, New Mexico and there are lights in the sky... This fic is what might have come after.
The Iron Giant by ArdenDrifter
When Jamie Tartt gets a midnight call from the Manchester Municipal Police, he expects to post bail for his father again.  What he finds is something quite different.
Or, Jamie Tartt discovers a thirteen-year-old half-brother no one ever warned him about.  Luckily, Roy and Keeley are there to help them out.
A Ted Lasso fic that was going to be only 4 chapters (I know that feeling my friend) but has since exploded into an incredible story about family, queerness, football, being a goldfish, organised crime and so much more. An absolute masterpiece of storytelling, that keeps the story consistent and clear which when viewed through the half concussed brain of one Jamie Tartt, professional football goldfish which is astounding in and of itself.
after the storm by perennial
He watches Leonato do quick mental calculations, already knowing the final sum. The governor might prefer Claudio as a man, might want to indulge his beloved daughter’s infatuation, but at the end of the day a prince is a prince, even a bastard one, and a count is just a count. Claudio intends to marry Hero. Don John gets to her first.
Another Hero/Don John fic that every reread makes me want to eat oranges and sit in sunshine. Politics and antagonists to friends to (hopefully?) lovers! I am in heaven!
my true love gave to me also by perennial
December 2011. Michael Bublé's Christmas album has just hit shelves, holiday parties are in full swing, and it's time for Don Pedro's annual office-wide Secret Santa gift exchange.
Another Hero/Don John fic (look I like what I like and the mean gruff one falling for the soft sunshine one is enough to catch me even though I’ve only ever seen the Tennant/Tate version) Office AU this time
Dodge and Burn by jurijurious
A Dot Matrix x Megabyte AU fanfic which starts at the hunt and hurtles off down its own circuit.
I never saw the show until this year and of course there is nothing I love more than a smooth voiced villain. And this fic, enemies to lovers be still my heart! Fuck the tension in this one is incredible and you know its all going to end in flames and the voices are dead gorgeous! (and may have also inspired me to start writing my own Dot/Megabyte fic)
Let The River Run by astolat
This one just started and is still an untagged story updating every day. I love astolat’s work for how fantastically well they entertwine the politics through the story (any romance is always more interesting when political jockeying is involved). Can’t wait to see where this one goes!

Comparing to centralised applications, dApps are more reliable, because they use the advantages of a decentralised network. A dApp stores data in a decentralised database and uses decentralised computing resources to work.
Open source code.

The easiest way to do it is by providing the source code.
Decentralised consensus mechanism
When the app is working in a decentralised environment, where all users have equal rights to change the data, there has to be a way for all network peers to agree on which data and transactions to trust. The solution to this problem is called a consensus mechanism.
Usage of internal currency.
There are many reasons for a dApp to use some form of currency: to support the development process, to fuel the underlying network and its consensus mechanism, to give the users a way to exchange value, and many others. It creates a healthy economic system around the app and helps the project grow.
Decentralised application platforms
A dApp is not the synonym of the blockchain, it all started with peer-to-peer networks. But the blockchain technology empowers dApps to create a sustainable economic system and offers state-of-the-art consensus mechanisms proven by many adopters. Let’s have an overview of the history of dApps and review the most popular platforms for dApp creation.
Peer-to-peer networks
The rise of the decentralised networks began with peer-to-peer content delivery and media sharing protocols like Gnutella, eDonkey and BitTorrent. These protocols helped users to download the content faster because they could connect to multiple peers and have many channels instead of one centralised storage server. Media sharing networks also helped to get licensed media content for free, and some consider it the main reason for the successful adoption and popularity of the technology.
MLM Software with Smart Contract and DAPP
To generate huge revenue within a short span of time, cryptocurrency MLM business is the right choice. This multi-level marketing act as an effective one due to its direct selling from the wholesaler to the end users. On the other side, it has much benefit but also has some acceptable facts that are facing to be drawbacks like fraudulent activities, cheating and theft or loss of products or currencies and many more.
To overcome this kind of activities, MLM platform development integrated either with smart contract or decentralized applications (DAPP) makes you stand out from the crowd by overcoming all the security issues.
Herewith, let us see in separate about the MLM platform with smart contract as well as Decentralized applications (Dapps)
Smart Contract based MLM Platform
As a known fact, let me define in short about, “what is smart contract?” before knowing about the MLM with smart contract and its benefits.
A smart contract is nothing but an independent accomplishment via contract mentioning the digital terms in the agreement made between the buyer and seller that is been coded with the help of a piece of code.
Smart contract permits the transactions in a trusted manner with an agreement in which the disparate, anonymous parties can transact without any access of a third party authority and any legalized or external enforcement.
Since it is fully encrypted and automated under a blockchain algorithm, MLM business with smart contracts provide complete trustworthiness, hacking-free with decentralization that assures in easy claiming of profit without any loss of money or products due to the automation of smart contract MLM system.
If MLM business powered by smart contracts, then there will be not at all any chance for the scamming MLM business owners towards the members. Likewise, smart contracts elevate all types of MLM business plans.
Benefits of MLM Platform by Smart Contract
Siple and Easy Transactions
Effortless Payment
Assured and Secured Data Safety
Highly Trusted International Transaction
Avert Malpractice
Multi-payment Options
No Extra or Additional Fees
Peer-to-Peer Systems
No External Party Access
MLM Platform with Decentralized Applications
In MLM business, a decentralized ecosystem comprises many advantageous benefits to the business level owners as well as the members in it. Due to this decentralization, it eliminates third party control and access to each and every entity in the MLM business network. That is why decentralization based MLM business are considered to be a user-friendly one.

A decentralised application (dApp) is an application that runs on a decentralised network and uses its resources. The standard features of a dApp include:No central point of failure. Comparing to centralised applications, dApps are more reliable, because they use the advantages of a decentralised network. A dApp stores data in a decentralised database and uses decentralised computing resources to work.
Open source code.
Decentralised architecture presumes that application source code can be accessible by all network members. In a trustless environment, the user needs to be able to verify what kind of application he is running and what exactly it does (to prevent scam and malware, protect personal data and assets).

I hear screams that we are all brothers and sisters of two lovers from a garden.
I hear other screams that we are all of a speck that blasted into everything like a nuclear bomb wiping nothingness from existence.
Truly it makes no difference to me one way or the other, like the babblings of a drunk man.
We are all made of the same materials, the same energy, the same spirit.
When I hurt you, I hurt me. When I lie to you, I lie to me. When I kiss you, I kiss me. When I love you, I love me.
I share all of the energy with my brother the tree, and my sister the bee.
Energy exchanged like one end of a lava lamp flowing into another.
I was naive in the past falling victim to the con man of self.
When I would love, I would bond souls into one with all I deemed worthy.
A chemical reaction, an unbreakable bond I once thought.
When it would break apart, like the splitting of an Atom, I would take all of the fear, pain, and agony from the both of us.
Leaving all of the love in my wake, like a man running for his life.
All I would do is take and be selfish, thinking I was a martyr, a saint, Jesus himself.
Is it not selfish to take more than I would give, to only worry of my sorrows and shortcomings.
Today I will try to be a giver of mind, body, and soul.
I give like the sun gives to flowers, like the gazelle gives to the lion
There really is no difference, they are both gifts meant to be given in the matrix of life.
How many gifts have I been given? How many gifts are there left to be given?
My final gift will be when I am given back to the Earth and reunite with the saints before me. Who else will I be given to?

A Glitch in the Matrix; A Flaw in His System
Agent Smith existed in a world of certainty and fundamental truth. The Matrix, he knew, was his purpose. He was its chosen guardian. He existed to stop the chaotic Zionists and their mission of liberated anarchy.
Humans, it seemed, were unable to behave in a manner that catered to their best interests.
And that was why the Matrix existed. The system to govern the humans, teasing them with the illusion of choice, while driving them all to complete their purpose. To power the machines.
There was order in his world.
A reason for everything.
Until there wasn’t.
Smith could find no reason for the abrupt change that he sensed on March 11, 1962. His counterparts didn’t seem to find anything different but Smith knew that there was something wrong in the Matrix. Something didn’t belong.
It was nothing he could recognize; nothing surface level.
But something was wrong and it was distracting.
He checked to see if there was an update he was missing; perhaps there was a glitch in his own software. An easy fix.
But no.
For some inexplicable reason, he was drawn to the Matrix Stats. A program that kept track of everything from the blades of grass within the simulation to the number of programs within the Matrix.
He checked it all but found himself staring at the population. 380,111 new babies had been born on March 11 while some 156, 916 had been taken away, their bodies recycled in the real world to nourish the little ones.
Yes, Smith acknowledged, things were different. But like an update, he learned to adjust. After a while, those little twinges that something was wrong became normal, easier for him to ignore. And that was just what he did.
It would be years before Smith thought about that day.
Year more before he would understand the significance of that day.
Six years pass and Smith no longer gives thought to the odd sensation. Or was it a feeling?
No, he decided, not a feeling.
He wasn’t capable of that. It was not something assigned to anti-virus programs.
It’s a winter day when Hamann and his crew break into an apartment building to free some moron who thought life would be better in the harsh underground city. But Hamann and his crew weren’t as careful as they should have been.
They managed a trace, missed the warning signs of deja vu.
When the Agents arrived, it melted into chaos.
Their potential red pill was killed in the crossfire, along with another from Hamann’s crew.
The rest escaped, running in different directions.
And the Agents gave chase, each in pursuit.
Smith had chased Hamann, following him through the halls. The man burst into an apartment building and jumped through a window to the fire escape. He took the steps two at a time and Smith was gaining on him when a small child climbed between them, looking down at the older man who was running down the stairs.
Smith barely stopped himself from crashing into the child.
Casualties, particularly young ones, were to be avoided by the Agent’s mandate. And while accidents happened, he tried to avoid casualties.
In hindsight, he should have walked around the child and finished his pursuit. He probably would have caught up to the terrorist and managed to put him down before he reached an exit.
Yet Smith couldn’t seem to look away from the dark-haired child, staring up at him with large brown eyes.
“What are you doing on my fire escape?” The boy asked.
Smith scanned the child.
Thomas Anderson.
Date of Insertion: March 11, 1962.
Age: six years.
The date struck him, freezing him in place as he regarded the young child.
A coincidence, he was nearly certain.
The boy was only six. He could hardly be the cause of the discomfort, the strange sensation that had once caused him pause.
Thomas, he thought. From the Aramaic To’oma. Meaning twin.
But humans, it seemed, rarely chose names based on their meanings. Thomas was an only child. There was no twin, no partner of sorts.
Just a lonely little one, as lost in the world as anyone else.
Anderson, Smith noted. Meaning son of Andrew. Andrew, of course, meaning man. Son of man.
Again, highly irrelevant.
Little Thomas might not know it but he was the child of machines, composed mostly of organic tissue but with enough mechanisms that he was no longer entirely human either.
“Sir? What are you doing on my fire escape?” The boy asked again.
A flash of annoyance spread through the Agent and it startled him. Annoyance was intrinsically human and Smith was far from it. As distant as one could possibly be from a fickle thing like emotions.
Before the boy could ask again, he said, “You’re dreaming. Go to sleep.”
“I’m not dreaming!” Thomas insisted, looking angry at the assumption.
“Trust me: you’re dreaming.” Smith quickly walked off, unwilling to stand and address the flash of annoyance, the anger that seemed ingrained in his avatar’s bones. All the while, the thoughts racing through his head.
Emotions are human.
Jones and Brown were down the street when he caught up with them.
“The girl made it out.”
“As did Hamann.” Smith confirmed.
“Their gunner is dead.” Jones stated.
Something sickly starts to grow inside Smith that the confirmation. It was dark and made him uneasy, almost nauseous. Programs didn’t get nauseous, Smith thought, but then, they also didn’t feel.
It should have been me to stop him.
Me.
A personal pronoun, indicating identity of the individual.
Smith was not an individual. He belonged to a tripariate program. A collective with a single purpose: to stop Zionists from freeing people.
They had done their job. Had managed to kill a few Zionists while at it.
The matter of who killed who was unimportant, irrelevant.
So why did Smith feel as though the world was shrinking around him? As if it were becoming infinitely smaller, taking his focus away from the Matrix and projecting it onto himself. And yet, selfishness was inherently human.
The earlier programs could experience things such as emotions. The Merovingian was a prime example of abstract hedonism. The Oracle was known for her compassion towards the humans. Even the Architect was mired with complex feelings towards the slaves, giving him the insight necessary to design the Matrix to suit their needs.
But Agents had no need for feelings.
He ran the possibilities in his mind.
Perhaps there had been a malfunction, in which case, he should report himself immediately and be taken to exile. A new Agent would be created, reprogrammed to fix the inherently human traits that seemed to be prevalent in Smith.
But no, he thinks. Exile does not seem… pleasant.
Self-preservation, however, was a human instinct.
He wondered if it was worse than he initially thought but Smith ignored it all.
He would discover, over the coming months and years, that it was not all that hard to cover up the occasional flash of feelings that rise to the surface when dealing with the Zionites. He did his best to eliminate any sign of the virus within the Matrix.
Years pass.
All the while, Smith feels his distaste for humanity growing. He hides it under a practiced mask if only to protect himself from deletion.
A few hundred people are freed, a few hundred more die.
New captains and crews replace the ones that grow old or are eliminated. Most act in quiet desperation, trying their hands at stealth and trickery, hoping to avoid the attention of the Agents.
And then there was the Nebuchadnezzar.
Led by Morpheus, the entire crew seemed to be operating on a single brain cell.
But then the message came through. A human willing to act as a spy in order to be placed back in the safety of the Matrix. While it wasn’t impossible, it would be a waste of resources to do such. But the human didn’t need to know that.
Instead, they agreed to the deal and were given a name.
The new bastard that Morpheus determined was capable of destroying the Matrix.
“We have the name of their next target.” Said Jones.
And Brown finished, “The name is Neo.”
Neo.
A scan of the information at hand brought him to the owner of the alias. A picture of a tall, clean-shaven man with dark hair and eyes appears, along with a name and a profile.
Thomas Anderson.
For a moment, Smith was aware of his every synapsis. The speed of every thought that went through his program. He could feel his very avatar like a cage surrounding him, trapping him.
Thomas Anderson.
March 11, 1962.
The day the Matrix turned.
Smith had never given any thought to Morpheus’ mission to find someone capable of destroying the Matrix. Smith had deemed it impossible long ago.
But now…
New feelings are creeping in.
While before, Smith found himself riddled with disgust over humanity, frustration at his own limitations, and annoyance in others, he finds something new growing inside him.
A new feeling plotting and working its way through him, consuming him.
Anticipation.
Finding Thomas Anderson, confronting him, capturing him before Morpheus is able…
He doesn't buy into the concept of the One but he couldn't deny that the man was special.
Now was the time for planning. Tomorrow would be the time for action.
And soon, Smith would find out for himself exactly how special Thomas Anderson was.
