so the nominations for the magnolia awards are finally out. the bad news is three-body didn’t get any acting nominations even though wang ziwen was a fan favourite for the best actress category. there was also a lot of hope for zhang luyi to be nominated. but you know, since zhang songwen, who was so highly praised by every living being for his performance in another show, didn’t even get a nomination, i’m like...meh whatever...

but the good news is that we still got 5 nominations:

three-body for best tv series

yang lei for best director

tian liangliang for best adapted screenplay

three-body for best cinematography

three-body for best art direction

i didn’t get the energy to fact check this, but some people are saying the best actor award and best tv series are almost never for the same series in magnolia awards, so it’s likely that three-body is going for a win as the best tv series, which is going to be something that every cast and crew can be proud of. 

(honestly i just want to see zhang luyi coming out of hibernation lol; btw did any of you see yu hewei at the huabiao awards?)

you know what i feel about the three big tv awards in china...

magnolia in 2023: ok we aren't giving a scifi show any acting nominations at all; and we are not letting three body winning much even though we invited liu cixin to the award show on his 60th birthday, and asked yu hewei to co-host the award show.

magnolia in 2024: ok, we fucked up last year. since the domestic & international reception of three body is so good, we are giving out a newly added award to a 2023 show in 2024.

biannual flying apsaras & golden eagle: ok we can't be like magnolia. we gotta give three body an acting nomination, but we can't nominate more than one person since the scifi genre can't take that much room...and we can't nominate the female actors because ye wenjie is morally grey...

Best Collaborative Effort:

This has undoubtedly got to go The Maine, Taking Back Sunday and Charlotte Sands for ‘Loved You A Little’

As I said in my recent YouTube video, that song feels like it has been a game-changer for collaborative songs.

Best Collaborative Live Performance:

I think I’m gonna give this to Pierce The Veil and Kellin Quinn for their ‘King For A Day’ performance at When We We’re Young Festival

Best New Finds Of The Year:

I’m tempted to call this a three-way tie between Down And Out, In Her Own Words, and Rematch👔

Biggest Surprise Hit:

Gonna give this to Three Days Grace for their album ‘Explosions.’

After having very little knowledge or interest in 3DG before this year, but saw a couple singles leading up to the album, listened to the album while walking off a hangover and fucking loved it. If you had told me at the start of the year that I would’ve considered putting 3DG in my top ten albums list I would not have believed you, but there you go

Most Creative Music Video:

Making it’s second appearance on this awards list, you know it, you love it, the award once more goes to ‘Loved You A Little’

Best Live Show You Went To This Year:

It is so hard to pick, part of me wants to say it was Shinedown in Nottingham a few weeks ago, but another part of me wanders if that’s just recency bias, because Sum 41 at Slam Dunk festival were also absolutely fantastic — so y’know what, I’m gonna cop out and call this one a tie between the two 👔

Best Comeback:

Runner up is Neck Deep with STFU, but when it comes down to it I can’t not give this award to Blink-182 for ‘Edging’ and the hype around Tom’s return to the band

Best “Town” Lyric Drop:

This one is going to go to Magnolia Park’s ‘Addison Rae’ for the line “I know I can’t be everything you want it, I’m sick of this town, it makes me wanna vomit”

Most Emotional Song Of The Year:

I think based on the amount of times I went back and listened to it over and over, I’ve got to give this one to ‘Raining In Toronto’ by In Her Own Words

Best Cover:

I’m hard pressed to think of too many covers that have come out this year, but I reckon I’m gonna go ahead and give this one to Settle Your Scores for their cover of ‘Royals’

Best Album:

Kings Of The New Age by State Champs 👑

Alright and those are my awards for 2022!! Like I said, this was just an experiment so I don’t know if I’ll do it again next year; even if I do may be with different categories, but the point is music has been fucking good this year - roll on next year!
