Tagged by @greenlikethesea! Genuinely quite touched that you thought to tag me even though I've basically been MIA lately!
last song: "The Party" by Yuna
favorite color: Celadon and indigo, probably
last book: “Land of Milk and Honey” by C. Pam Zhang—a near-future climate dystopia scifi (I refuse to say cli-fi. I won’t do it. I REFUSE.) that’s sort of like…The Menu meets Venomous Lumpsucker, with bonus toxic yuri and a commentary on "heritage"-oriented conservation ethics and Orientalism.
last movie: "I Saw the TV Glow" which was absolutely right up my alley.
(For some reason, I kept thinking of Chungking Express; they are obviously VERY different films, but there's something about the way both start out with a lot of space and sort of collapse inwards, getting tighter and tighter before releasing the tension in a sudden but understated shift. I don't think this is necessarily a very strong analytical angle, but I might go watch Chungking Express again anyway.)
last show: Does Dropout count? If we’re talking scripted TV, I recently rewatched some IWTV.
sweet/spicy/savory: I think my favorite foods (e.g. nyonya laksa) are actually all of the above! Why pit three bad bitches etc etc. I also genuinely enjoy bitter/sour flavor notes—I don't think my palate is particularly sophisticated, but I do appreciate a little contrast and balance.
relationship status: Happily partnered!
last thing I googled: "samyang scoville chart"
current obsession: The un-fun answer is work. It is actually a legit character flaw that I get a bit intense about work; I really need to set better boundaries, but somehow I always have an excuse about why this is totally absolutely just a temporary push while [justification du jour] is going on. It's not great.
Fandom-wise, I’ve been a bit tempted to dip into Wicked lately—shockingly, there aren’t that many Gelphie fics on AO3?? Wild. I do not actually have the time or energy to actually do anything at the moment, but I was into the Oz books as a child + Maguire's Wicked as a teen, it was my very first Broadway show, and I just interviewed someone who worked on the movie. Perhaps most crucially, I also recently read an extremely bad take in a professional review that Wicked is boring because it's about not being mean to green people.
Historically, spite has been a VERY effective motivator for me. I don't have time but I keep thinking...maybe I do? I mean, I don't. But maybe I do?
looking forward to: Seeing a bunch of my friends soon! Ever since I moved back to the US about a year ago, my social life has gotten a little, ah, idiosyncratic. My life is in kind of a weird place right now!

I have shown you the Reunion Dinner (团圆饭) we had two weeks earlier due to my brother having to go oversea for his company’s training trip. Behold, here is another of our reunion dinner, albeit the home-cooked version. You saw the char siu, roasted chicken and roasted pork mum bought for the prayer earlier in the day so naturally those appeared on the dinner table. As one of my brother and his family plus my sister’s friend will be coming over, mum added extra dishes to the menu. It is not as luscious as the feast we had at the restaurant but nonetheless, it is still a scrumptious and delectable meal.
Tumblr media
A simple Cabbage Stir-Fry with premium ingredients of canned baby abalones and scallops. Sis-in-law was commenting on the cabbage being sweet tasting. Ended up this dish emptied of the food saved for a few pieces of the abalones.
Tumblr media
Sis was saying mum sliced the Char Siu too thickly but I on the other hand found them just nice as it offered a better texture. Sweet, charred with a smoky taste and just fatty enough to make it a wonderful eat. The Roasted Chicken (deep-fried actually) was well seasoned and succulent to go with the steamed white rice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These extra-large Steamed Tiger Prawns were bought in Batam and delivered to our house. As the prawns were fresh, mum just steamed it without any condiment. After deshelling, we added some minced ginger sauce before sending it straight into the mouth.
Tumblr media
Another seafood that brother order for us from Batam is this large Red Snapper which is done in a spicy style. Mum only made used of the tail portion as the fish is too big to cook properly in the wok she is using. Fresh and sweet tasting with a little spiciness made this a good dish.
Tumblr media
Mum also prepared one of her specialties, Braised Five-Spice Pork Belly with shiitake mushrooms and hardboiled eggs. For the soup, it is Pork Ribs Soup with fried pig tendons, fish balls, corn, lettuces and dried scallops to sweeten it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The side dishes are Pickled Daikon and spicy Nyonya Achar which is a South Asian pickled food made from a variety of vegetables and fruits preserved in brine, vinegar, edible oils and various South Asian spices.
Tumblr media
Even though I took a little of everything, I still ended up with a Full Plate. As I slowly tucked into my meal, are you also enjoying your reunion dinner?

Hello, I don't know if you answer questions, but can you give ideas on the attire Kurapika & Neon would wear if they had a traditional/kurta wedding? What kind of ceremonies and events would take place to make it official? 💑 I think it could be an alternative where the Kurta never died, like in one of your fanfics!
Hello, so sorry that it took so long for me to answer this ask, @samnia !
I'm going to list out certain ideas I did involve in the fanfic Black Veil where they had a Kurta wedding. I will also
#1: The outfit
I think the outfit will be similar to the Kurta attire they have, but more grand. I think it should have more gold ornaments, like necklaces and bangles. For the colour, it has to be more vibrant and maybe more sparkly? Like you know how in traditional wedding outfits, it's like the traditional costume but they look more special. And of course, the headpiece!
For the bride, it will be in black. I got the inspiration from The Little Nyonya (2009) - a Singaporean TV Drama where they portrayed Baba culture and the bride wears a black veil to ward of evil spirits.
Tumblr media
#2: Giving a bag of coins to the bride's parents
I got this idea because in Chinese cultures (depending on the region), the groom's family will give gold jewellery to the bride. So I thought it would be a nice touch.
#3: Ceremony
The Ceremony will be held by the Kurta Village Elder. He would like... officiate(?) the marriage in Kurta language in front of the ancestors or a shrine. It is not specified what religion the Kurta people follow, but definitely not the major religions that are known. In some lesser known religions (and civilisations before colonialisation), there is this thing called ancestral worship so that's why I envisioned them to officiate the wedding in front of a shrine where they worship ancestors.
#4: Guests giving money to the married couple
In my country, I have attended weddings that are varied in terms of ethnicity but they all had one thing in common - guests will give them a packet (for Chinese, it's red) containing money. Now the amount is debateable, in my country they believe that the amount depends on how close you are to the bride/groom and also the place of the wedding reception. So I guess it'll be nice to add that detail. Well for Kurta people, maybe the amount is not so strictly followed - they can just give whatever amount they'd like. The belief is to gift the couple something to start with in their new journey.
#5: Bride giving a basket of sweets she made in the morning
I actually added this detail in the fic out of nowhere. I think it's because of I wanted the scene where Kurapika meets his mystery bride to flow nicely.
The bride must make local delicacies in the morning, then she will present it to the groom after their ceremony in a room alone. The sweets symbolise a sweet beginning for the couple.
Coincidentally, @anotherworldash told me that Indonesia has a similar marriage custom of the bride handing sweets (sangjit ceremony). So I guess the idea is not far from reality.
#6: Gatecrashing
In some Southeast Asian Chinese weddings (I know I'm taking a lot of inspiration from this region because it's what I'm familiar with the most), there is this thing called Gatecrashing. This happens usually in the morning of the wedding. The groom will have to complete "tasks" and "hurdles" set up by the bridesmaid to get to the bride's house. This is to prove the groom's "love and dedication" in order to get to his bride-to-be. I thought this custom was always sweet and it'll be fun to see Kurapika go through hurdles to get to Neon.
I think that's all I have for now. Thank you for this interesting ask! If anyone has other ideas, feel free to share!

Some HCs from your Waterbird AUS please?
Tumblr media
LETS GO LETS GO LETS GOO
•Contrary to canon, percy has a great singing voice in this AU (both for plot reasons and because I subscribe to the hc of percy having a bit of siren powers)
•the first time they meet in this au
Romance AU- they meet in a little cafe where it was too crowded so they sat together and talked and talked until BOOM! Friends to lovers.
Thriller AU- their first confrontation resulted in an exploding building.
•I'm starting to see the appeal of combining both AUs but then I would have to write the miraculous love square type identity shenanigans 😫
•Jason's favourite dish is this assam laksa noodle dish from a small shop run by an elderly nyonya lady while Percy's favourite dish is a meat stew Sally makes. This IS relevant to the plot because food is my love language and I intend to shove it onto all my favourite characters.
•Thriller AU would probably have Jason with his all blades because I intend for it to have more magical elements to it (not unless I change it to be as grounded as having a magical water Jesus as I can)

Nyonya House
Had spent the entire day shopping at 1Borneo, then met my eldest bro in law's brother and his family at Nyonya House for lunch
Tumblr media
Location: 1Borneo, Ground Floor area, near Times bookstore
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Setting: A nice Chinese set-up with a hint of Malay, like a standard Nyonya design
Atmosphere: 4.5/10 (despite the nice pretty setting, there wasn't much patronage in the restaurant though)
Design: 7/10 (very beautiful and classic design, the makings of a classy restaurant)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Food: Fried rice, charcoal tofu, spicy and sour fish, chicken piece and kangkung
Presentation: 8.5/10 overall (looks yummy and tasteful, pretty appetizing)
Taste: 8.5/10 overall (tastes great, everything was as it should taste just right and the texture of each food was flavourful. I didn't taste the charcoal tofu though, it looked a little iffy)
A good place to have lunch, though it's quite heavy on your wallet even after Brunei dollar conversion, so go when you only feel really rich enough

"Mbak Mar lagi masak makan siang kah?" ia bergumam sambil memasuki area dapur.
Namun, yang ia lihat bukanlah asisten rumah tangga seperti dugaannya. Melainkan sosok Nyonya Hadiwijaya, ibunda Alex, tengah membuat sesuatu disana.
"Mama?" tanya Alex.
'Gue lagi mimpi?' batinnya bertanya.
"Alex? Udah bangun?" tanya sang Ibu sambil berbalik. "Mau makan apa Nak?"
"Mama... Nggak kerja?" tanya Alex heran, sambil mengucek kedua matanya.
"Nggak, hari ini libur. Kamu nggak kuliah? Kok jam segini baru bangun?"
Alex menggeleng, "lagi libur semester. Sementara semester pendekku, baru mulai minggu depan."
"Semester pendek? Oh, yang tempo hari kamu bicarain minggu lalu?"
Alex mengangguk.
"Yaudah, kamu duduk aja dulu. Mama lagi masak makan siang."
Udah lama Mama nggak masak sendiri."
'Dan seumur hidup, aku bahkan nggak pernah makan masakan Mama,' batin Alex sambil meminum susunya.
"Kamu suka kan?" tanya sang ibu, kembali berkutat dengan wajan berisi sayuran yang tengah ditumisnya.
"Aku suka semua makanan," jawabnya pendek. "Emang Mbak Mar kemana?"
"Mama suruh libur sehari, tanpa potong gajinya."
"Alex semalam tidur jam berapa? Kok jam segini baru bangun?" sang ibu pun membuka percakapan, sambil menaruh sepiring nasi di hadapan Alex.
Sang anak pun menaruh ponselnya di dekat gelas susunya sebelum menjawab pertanyaan tersebut.
"Jam lima, aku keasikan baca buku," jawabnya jujur.
"Buku apa?" sang ibu masih tetap ingin mempertahankan percakapan, walau kini ia sibuk menyiapkan hidangan makan siang untuk keduanya.
"A Little Princess, sastra klasik Inggris. Alurnya mengalir gitu aja, makanya gak kerasa pas selesai udah mau pagi."
"Mmm begitu. Tadi Papa mau ngajak sarapan bertiga, sebelum berangkat ke rumah sakit. Tapi pas Mama mau bangunin kamu, kata Papa nggak usah."
"Papa? Tumben?"
"Kok tumben?" tanya sang ibu heran. "Papa kangen ngobrol sama kamu, Alex. Udah hampir satu tahun kalian nggak saling ngomong kan?"
Membuat sang ibu tertegun.
"Alex sayang, nggak gitu..."
Namun, kedua orangtua Hadiwijaya tak paham, bagaimana cara mereka mendukung putra tunggal mereka.
"Alex sayang..." sang ibu memeluk putranya, airmatanya tak kuasa ia tahan. "Maafin Mama ya nak? Bukan maksud Mama buat rendahin jurusan kamu..."
Kalo kamu jadi dokter kayak Papa, masa depanmu kan terjamin..."
"Ma..." ujar Alex lirih, sambil melepas pelukannya. "Hidupku, biar aku yang jalanin sendiri Ma. Dari kecil, apa aku pernah ngelawan sama Mama? Apa aku pernah protes waktu SD dikasih les segitu banyak, sekolah di sekolah standar internasional sampe SMP, aku pernah protes? Nggak kan?"
Sang anak berusaha menahan emosinya, agar kata-kata yang keluar tidak menyakiti sang ibu.
"Aku udah 18 tahun waktu lulus SMA Ma. Udah saatnya aku atur hidupku sendiri.
"Iya Ma, aku paham. Tapi plis Ma, buat kuliahku, biar aku yang jalanin ya? Kalo aku gagal pas lulus nanti, Mama boleh marahin aku. Karena aku nggak nurut sama Papa Mama."
Tak ada jawaban dari sang ibu. Keduanya, ibu dan anak itu, larut dalam tangis masing-masing.
"Ma..." panggil Alex.
"Kenapa nak?"
"Aku... Laper."
Nyonya Hadiwijaya langsung melepas pelukannya, sambil tertawa kecil, "iya iya. Mau Mama suapin, nak?"
Buru-buru Alex menggeleng, "sekarang aku udah 19 tahun Ma. Yakali."
"Kan Mama bilang, berapapun umur kamu, kamu itu masih anak kecil di mata Mama," kata Nyonya Hadiwijaya sambil menaruh lauk pauk di piring Alex. "Lagian, Mama sibuk kerja, jarang banget merhatiin kamu. Tahu-tahu kamu udah gede sebelum Mama sempet manjain kamu."
Ingin rasanya Alex mengeluarkan unek-uneknya lagi, tapi ia urungkan.

Malaysia: Explore the Beauty of Asia
Tumblr media
Malaysia, a captivating Southeast Asian gem, beckons travelers with its rich tapestry of culture, stunning landscapes, and vibrant cities. From the bustling streets of Kuala Lumpur to the tranquil rainforests of Borneo, Malaysia offers an array of experiences that will leave you spellbound. Before embarking on your Malaysian adventure, let's dive into the essential preparations, visa requirements, must-visit places, transportation options, and practical tips to make your trip unforgettable.
Preparing for Your Malaysian Adventure
Before you jet off to Malaysia, a little preparation can go a long way in ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey. First and foremost, check your passport's validity – it should be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay. It's also wise to familiarize yourself with the local customs and etiquette, as Malaysia is known for its cultural diversity.
Obtaining a Malaysian Visa
For many nationalities, Malaysia offers a visa-free stay for up to 90 days. However, always verify your specific requirements with the Malaysian embassy or consulate in your home country. If a visa is required, gather the necessary documents, including a visa application form, passport-sized photos, and proof of sufficient funds for your stay. The processing time may vary, so apply well in advance to avoid any last-minute hassles.
Must-Visit Places in Malaysia
Malaysia boasts an array of captivating destinations, each with its own unique charm. Start your journey in Kuala Lumpur, the bustling capital, where the iconic Petronas Twin Towers dominate the skyline. Explore the vibrant street food scene at Jalan Alor and discover the city's rich history at the Sultan Abdul Samad Building.
Venture into the heart of Borneo to experience the enchanting rainforests and diverse wildlife of Sabah and Sarawak. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, where you can witness these magnificent creatures up close.
For a taste of history and culture, explore Penang's UNESCO-listed George Town, with its well-preserved colonial architecture and mouthwatering street food. Langkawi, an archipelago of 99 islands, is a paradise for beach lovers and nature enthusiasts.
Exploring Small Towns and Countryside
While the major cities of Malaysia are undoubtedly captivating, its small towns and countryside offer a different perspective on the country's culture and beauty. Head to Malacca to immerse yourself in its colonial history and sample delicious Nyonya cuisine.
In the Cameron Highlands, you can escape the heat and explore lush tea plantations. The historic town of Ipoh boasts charming streets adorned with vibrant street art and delectable local dishes.
Public Transport vs. Personal Vehicle
Malaysia offers a well-developed public transportation system, including buses, trains, and trams, making it convenient for travelers to explore the country. However, if you prefer the flexibility of a personal vehicle, rental options are widely available. Just remember to familiarize yourself with local traffic rules and regulations.
Accommodation: Couchsurfing and Cheap Hotels
For budget-conscious travelers, Malaysia has a plethora of accommodation options. Couchsurfing is a great way to connect with locals and experience Malaysian hospitality firsthand. Alternatively, budget-friendly hotels and guesthouses are scattered throughout the country, offering comfort without breaking the bank. Be sure to read reviews and book in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons.
Renting a Vehicle as a Tourist
To explore Malaysia at your own pace, renting a vehicle is a fantastic option. International car rental companies such as Avis and Hertz operate in major cities and airports. Ensure you have a valid driver's license and inquire about the required documents, such as an international driving permit, which is often necessary for foreigners.
Traffic Rules and Regulations
Malaysia follows left-hand driving, and the traffic rules are similar to those in many Western countries. Always obey speed limits and road signs, and be cautious when driving in hilly or mountainous regions, as roads can be winding and steep. Seatbelts are mandatory, and drink-driving is strictly prohibited.
Trekking and Solo Camping
Malaysia is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Taman Negara National Park offers pristine rainforests, canopy walks, and river cruises. For a more challenging trek, head to Gunung Kinabalu in Sabah, Southeast Asia's tallest mountain. Solo camping is possible in many national parks, but check regulations and safety precautions before setting out.
Applying for an International Driving License in Malaysia
If you plan to rent a vehicle and drive in Malaysia, consider applying for an International Driving Permit Malaysia (IDP) in your home country before your trip. The IDP is typically valid for one year and allows you to drive legally in Malaysia. Ensure that you carry both your original driver's license and the IDP while driving.
With this comprehensive travel guide, you're well-equipped to embark on an unforgettable journey through the diverse landscapes, rich culture, and warm hospitality that Malaysia has to offer. From bustling cities to serene countryside, Malaysia promises an adventure that will leave you with cherished memories for years to come. So, pack your bags, prepare for an exciting adventure, and get ready to explore this captivating corner of Southeast Asia.

Baskar nodded as if they knew where Oregon and California were. Well, maybe they knew a little of California, they knew it was at the beach, because of Katy Perry. Rural parts did excite them, with what they knew of the vastness of the United States, there was probably so much nature, so much untouched wilderness. “What do you do in the rural parts? Farming?” Farming was cool, Baskar had tried it a few times, mostly because they liked the idea of setting up some kind of system with an automatic watering system. They moved around for it too much to ever work out.
They beamed when asked about Jakarta, even if they hadn’t been back in over a decade, it was the one place they’d called home with a joyous feeling. Memories of childhood, of its busy streets and quiet suburbs, of going into the wilderness or to the busy waterfront. “Jakarta is huge,” they said. “But it feels compact, I lived in the suburbs, but it was super easy to get to the centre, the public transport is great. And the food.” Baskar sighed. “The food is the best, there is food everywhere. And so many different cultures so there is different food everywhere.” They spend years missing everything about it, but most of all their family.
Miss Akhila. Baskar hadn’t called anyone miss or nyonya in a long time. His grandparents being Dutch - in Great Britain - they’d never conformed to being formal. But they liked hearing it now. Lokni telling them there were more British people felt so sweet, like he was attempting to give them some connections. “A lot of British people,” they commented with a grin.
No emergency lights. They swallowed. “Uhm, yes, I haven’t been on the ship before,” they admitted. Then started to fear that maybe they’d made a mistake. They’d been so great at avoiding the ship, for good reason. Like they avoided sleeping in a bungalow because it was too noisy. They figured that if they were helping someone else, they could get over this fear. It was irrational anyway, right? There was no way the fact that they thought there would be ghosts meant there would be ghosts. All the other noises on the ship, they would just have to try and focus on Lokni alone. They could do this. Right? They could do this?
They felt odd when Lokni returned to the sand, like they’d failed. And now the other was willing to take a chance on them, and Baskar tried not to doom-think their way into baulking. But it was always easier to do things for other people, to disregard their own fears and pull through because someone else asked them. They could be brave. But they also had to be honest about the difficulties, right?
They swallowed. “Sorry,” they said. “I can do that, I’m just… I’m a bit jumpy because of the sounds.” Which was part of the truth, but this was no time to bring up the possibility of ghosts and the fact that Baskar thought they could hear them. They held their hands against the construction headphones. “I know this place is going to have a lot of sounds. The creaking, the mechanics, and everything else.” They paused. “But— but I can do it!”
"I'm from the west coast. Been out there most of my life. Spent fifteen years in California before moving to Oregon. Nothing fancy though, always lived in rural parts," Lokni answered, checking that his belt was secure. "What's Jakarta like?" he asked, curious about another place that he hadn't heard much of before. Baskar admitted that they may have been lying down, a revelation which put Lokni a little more at ease. Still, it didn't answer the question of why Baskar had arrived on the shore and not the ship. What was the missing variable? Up to this point, Lokni had grown accustomed to not being able to make heads or tails of anything, but even if he could get a little grip on what was going on here, it would help make him a little more at ease. "Oh, you mean Miss Akhila," Lokni hummed with approval. Akhila was very skilled and had helped him out more than just a couple times. "There's also a couple more you'll probably meet in due time." There were loads of people on the island, by Lokni's standards anyway. Though they had slowed in arrival, every now and then a new face would appear. Halting his ascension, Lokni froze, giving Baskar a confused look. He thought that Baskar would have known that. "The ship doesn't have any emergency lights, that's why I asked you if you had anything that could be used as a light source. Once we run out of daylight, that's it. Is this your first time going into the ship?" The eerie memories began to eek their way back into Lokni's mind as he remembered awakening in the dark, unable to see anything but the dimmest of light filtering from a sole staircase that led to the next dreary floor of the ship. It hadn't even been nighttime, on the contrary, it had been broad daylight. There was not a doubt in Lokni's mind that the darker the ship was, the more dangerous it would also become. Especially, for someone who wasn't familiar with its layout. Seeing Baskar's wide-eyed expression, and the slight shift in demeanor, Lokni returned to the sand. Despite his best efforts, Lokni was growing more perplexed. This person had shown up out of the blue, asked to help, seemed ready to go, and now at the edge of all things they were hesitating? Measuring his words carefully he said, "the ship isn't somethin' to be taken lightly, it's a dangerous structure, and if the tide comes back in, it's gonna be even more dangerous. I need you to be able to stay calm and act quickly in case things go south. Can you do that?"' It wasn't his intention to be so direct, but for both of their safety's sake, he needed to know. What did Baskar really want or expect from him?

Non-anime Asian TV Shows that I liked
This is just a short list of some Asian TV shows I liked, list is not exhaustive. Thank you  @cautionworksstuff for encouraging me to do this since you wanted to know more about other foreign TV shows other than anime.
When I say non-anime, it means shows that are not Japanese animated series.
1. Kingdom [Netflix] (South Korea)
This series hits HARD. It’s an original Korean Netflix series. Now, there’s a lot of shows/movies that are named “Kingdom”, so let me clear about this one: this is the one that is set with a Zombie apocalypse during the Joseon period.
Tumblr media
It follows the story of the Crown Prince who is being framed for treachery by his evil stepmom (the Empress) and her clan, as soon as his father died. In the midst of that, a disease outbreak happens that turns everyone into zombies, and the Prince struggles to avoid being defeated by the corrupted government officials as well as to save his people from the zombie apocalypse.
What makes this one stand out from series/movies like The Walking Dead are two things: 1) the political setting - while there is a zombie outbreak, it’s also the battle for power, 2) the historical setting - the guns used here are very limited, and the science/medicine explained behind this outbreak is not like “oh due to biotech experiment gone wrong”, 3) unlike Walking Dead, they actually explained the cause of the illness, the cures and the weaknesses.
They are going to come up with a new one-episode spin-off(?) this month.
2. Girl from Nowhere (Thailand)
This is also available on Netflix. This series follow a character named Nanno, who goes to various schools as the new girl. In the second episode, she’s revealed to be some sort of immortal entity that goes on to expose the sins and wrongful acts of parents, teachers and students. She then punishes them as some form of karma. Beware, some episodes are downright disturbing and only for mature audience.
Tumblr media
I don’t have a confirmation of this, but according to Wikipedia and actress Chicha Amatayakul, the character Nanno draws inspiration from Junji Ito’s Tomie, and the similarities are very obvious. From the way the people react to her, the hairstyle and the even to the beauty mark near the eye, the similarities are very obvious.
One difference though, I must say, is that Nanno is an extremely charming character as compared to Tomie. You will really root for her and can’t help but like her presence, even if she’s a little scary. When I read Tomie, I didn’t exactly felt the same magnetic pull as Nanno did for me. Season 1 was really good. Season 2 was more brutal but I think Season 1 was slightly better.
3. Trese (Philippines)
This was actually based on a Filipino comic series, with the same name. I had actually waited for this series to be animated. This series features Filipino supernatural beings. I had always wondered how it’ll be like if there was a cool anime about Filipino mythological creatures, such as the manananngal, aswang, tikbalang etc. I think their designs and stories are interesting and not very talked about in the media.
Tumblr media
I had once complained about this. We have so many interesting Filipino mythological creatures, but why do we focus on mostly drama series on love and family, and not come up with a horror series featuring them?
This one’s available on Netflix as well, and it’s in three audios: English, Filipino and Japanese. I do recommend the Filipino audio because the pronunciation of the creatures are better. But that might be just me listening to my native language.
Although, just a tiny criticism - there are only six episodes so far. All in less than 30 minutes. This was an issue for me and also my family who had watched it because we felt the pacing was too fast. They didn’t explain what the creatures were, what they do, which can be confusing for people who are not familiar with the mythology. Yeah, I really think it’s because the pacing was fast due to the small number of episodes. If they slowed down, it would be great. Hopefully we get more episodes the next season.
4. Meteor Garden (Taiwan) [2001] OR Boys over Flowers (South Korea) OR Hana Yori Dango (Japan)
This was adapted from a manga called “Hana Yori Dango” (Boys over Flowers). It has been adapted in numerous shows, with Japan doing the first live action film in 1995.
The one that I had watched is the Taiwanese drama version, Meteor Garden (2001 version). There was also a Korean drama adaptation called “Boys over Flowers”. I didn’t watch that one but quite a number of my friends did. There was also the Japanese adaptation, as well as Thai and Chinese adaptation of it. I can’t say for sure which one is the best because I only remember watching the Taiwanese (2001) version and it’s close to my heart. The Taiwanese (2001), South Korean and Japanese drama versions are often being compared. I’ll let you guys decide based on this information.
Tumblr media
I don’t remember much from the plot, although it was this drama was very hyped back then.
This was the summary on Wikipedia:
It tells the story of Tsukushi Makino, a girl from a middle class family, whose mother enrolled her in an elite high school to compete with the families from her husband's company. While at Eitoku, she encounters the F4, a gang of four young men who are children of Japan's wealthiest families, and who bully anyone that gets in their way.
5. The Little Nyonya [2008] (Singapore)
Saving the last for the one that resides a special place in my heart, and perhaps for a lot of people in Singapore.
Words cannot describe how much this was well-liked in Singapore. I remember everyone praising this. This was hands-down one of THE BEST drama ever produced in Singapore. I remember coming home, waiting at I think 8pm? Just to tune into local TV and then watch this show for a good 40minutes. I know they did a remake in China, which I didn’t watch, but I highly recommend the Singaporean version (since it’s the original and the setting is in Singapore/Malaysia anyway).
Tumblr media
This series really introduced the Peranakan culture to the Singaporean audience. I like to think this story has two parts where it follows the story of a Nyonya (Peranakan Chinese woman).
The first part’s setting is during WW2. Huang Ju Xiang, a woman born into a Peranakan family and her mother was a 2nd wife. Because of her mother’s status, she’s been ostracised by her family and is tasked to do the household like a servant. She meets a Japanese man and yeah, since it’s in the midst of WW2, their love story was kinda “forbidden” too. The first part is actually my favourite.
The second part follows the story of their daughter, Yue Niang Yamamoto. This story is longer and Yuening has to face the same type of ostracisation her mother had endured by the Huang family.

I love this very much! Sis, you draw fast.
For context it was based on this tweet:
Tumblr media
Ah, this is definitely a great outfit on her! I always love how I just randomly show you a tweet, didn't expect a nice drawing with Neon's outfit (though I did try to picture it when I read this tweet... I went like "hmm... What can she wear from Indonesia").
It also makes me think about one of the best Singaporean local TV drama ever made called The Little Nyonya. The wedding scene in that show was what inspired my fanfic "Black Veil" because the Nyonya bride wore black veil based on their traditions.
Tumblr media
I think Neon would definitely like visiting SEA. She'll like the beaches in Indonesia and the Philippines, and the malls in Singapore!! I also think she'll visit the casino in Singapore since she seems to like that.
This reminds me that Kurapika kind of was wearing a Chinese traditional clothing in the 1999 version?
Tumblr media
It looks like it, but I don't know, the footage looks grainy. Something that can be considered in a few SEA countries with a Chinese population like Singapore.
You know, someone asked me about headcanons regarding Kurta wedding traditions. But it seems so difficult to answer because we don't have any confirmed information on which culture the Kurta was inspired from. I'm thinking of trying to see several wedding traditions (mainly from Asia) and find commonalities in them and try to make up something similar. But that will take some time. I'm keeping the black veil headcanon though, since you know, it's from Singapore (Perenakan to be exact).
Feel free to add more ideas @anotherworldash

Neon in Kebaya to visit me and @thelovelyghostwriter in her trip to Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia
The version of kebaya Neon is wearing is my favorite type (Kutubaru Kebaya), I always wear this type to semi-formal events.
Kebaya is officially recognised as the national attire of Indonesia,[10][15] and its fashion icon,[16] although it is more popularly worn by Javanese, Sundanese and Balinese people. In Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, it is recognized as one of its ethnic attires especially among Malay and Peranakan communities;[n 3] the complete outfit is known in these region as "sarong kebaya".[6] The style of sarong kebaya vary from place to place throughout the region.
