ART RAMBLES: as i mentioned on the tags of my last drawing this piece gave me SUCH a headache#i think it's probably cos it was just supposed to be a quick sketch so i used a more stable pencil brush#but then i really liked it so i decided to properly colour it instead of just doing the watercolour thing i usually do for sketches#but with finished pieces i like the lineart to be kinda messy and the sketch to even show through bit#and since i used the more stable brush for the sketch it ended up looking WAY too clean. not like my stuff at all.#so i just started throwing stuff at the wall to see what could make it more interesting. full background! actual lineart! texture layers!#and this here is what i was the happiest with. i don't... love it though. it should be looking way more interesting given the pose#and then i also did the purge girl halfway through this and it looked SO good right out of the bat (pun intended)#so i went a bit into a spiral. did some realistic stuff i'll post soon. and now am trying out a thick black lineart style.#(i'll definitely still use the coloured lines for the sketchy watercolour stuff though. it just looks way too cute)

#like whenever i do “line art” its just a cleaned up sketch which i rlly like but i want to try to do clean lineart. or cleanish. cause#a lot of a my lineart ends up getting softened with a gouache or oil paint bruch in csp#but also this looks kinda meh rn. ill probably go in and thicken the lineart and thin it out in other places so it looks beter#or maybeill just paint over it like usual#also willows face looks wonky and it this was all one layer it would be much easier to fix lol#willow#oc#original character#wip#work in progress#art

Y'know?#the other thing I learned is that it's okay to be messier with how colors go together#as long as the rendering style is consistent across the piece it's gonna be fine! just don't mix it up too much or it doesn't work

😊 a piece i’m really proud of and why
i'm so so so so happy with this fanart for the Cautious Traveller's Guide to the Wastelands. of course I popped off while making fanart for a relatively unknown piece of media 😭 but it doesn't matter because i'm SO proud of it and it gave me a taste for lush/cluttered illustrations which i really hope to make more of in the future!
👀 a piece where i tried something new
it was kind of a product of necessity (I'd missed the zine deadline and was rushing to get it done) but I didn't do a refined lineart pass for this ACOC art. instead i just kind of cleaned up my sketch layers and rendered it as best i could. lineart is my least favourite part of the process and (fortunately/unfortunately) this proved that i could get away with messier lines and still have a piece look "complete" by my own standards. since then i've used a cleaned up sketch layer as my lineart for a few more pieces and it's SO much more enjoyable 😭

i haven't posted art with proper lineart in like a month i just clean up my sketches until it looks like lineart and honestly it's more fun AND looks better imo. girl im never lining anything again after i finish the comms im working on now!

#every time every freakin time I decide to trust the secondary artist to do clean up on my layouts i am punished#i tell them every time 'my work is a guideline for you. you need to go in and fix it for your final art'#and then they send me back a file where the shading layer is the blocks and imprecise lines based on my sketch#so I have to go and clean it myself and redo a bunch of stuff#and then I just get to hear “oh wow their art is sooo good they've gotten so much better!”#staring into the camera like in the fucking office you guys know how much visual information i have to give them im drawing the entire sket#and when they go off my sketch and draw their own stuff it doesnt look right but When I say im going to ask for a revision they are like#'oh youre focusing too much on it'#HUH whAT am I NOT BEING PAID TO MAKE SURE THE ART LOOKS GOOD#i swear#okay deep breaths im fine im normal time do go shade a background i guess#wild ramblings

my internet is still out along with the power so i’m gonna take that as god telling me to take the time to label my fucking layers tbh
#i have i think three wips that are all haphazardly labeled#and i just really need to clean up in general SNSJ bc like i know there’s several layers that need to be deleted in general#the way i draw is chaos#i draw wip over wip on top of each other until i get lines like cuz this bitch doesn’t do line art#and THEN when i go over it enough times and it looks good enough i clean up the lines#so i often forget i have several sketch layers under everything#not to mention in a very paranoid person#and i worry about losing lines that i didn’t like initially but do later#so i take a lot of screenshots and keep folders of the older sketch layers pretty much throughout my whole process#until i do exactly this and spring clean it#lyriumsings txt

Reminder to always check whether you accidentally deleted a layer or folder before closing you art file! Or else you may open it the next day to find you've lost hours of work 🙃
#luckily I still have the most important final sketch layer but alllllll the prototypes gone. all the anatomy sketches gone#really took the wind out of my sails#not to mention the version of the sketch i still have was shrunken down so I cant clean it up I gotta fully redo it as line art 😩#artist problems#rambles

honest to god i think i spend more of my time artblocked than drawing. im being so serious right now when i say i havent drawn something decent/beyond a draft in more than 2 months and its driving me insane

Art style breakdown /tutorial(??)
Some friends asked so here we go : disclaimer im bad at explaining (so feel free to send an ask or smth)
Final art (long read so theres a timelapse at the end)
If its not for something important (commissions), i dont usually make a lineart for a drawing but just clean up the sketch , it wont be used anyway
I usually separate them by colors , mostly so i can Alpha lock them and not worry about coloring over parts
When coloring i use a soft airbrush to have gradients within the shading , so its not one solid color . How i shade is very blocky , lots of triangles lol (if im using CSP i love using the lasso fill tool ) but there are parts especially in the skin where I keep it smooth and blended, usually nose and cheek area . Using an asaro head is usually a good start to learning how to shade faces with planes in mind
Depends on the character, but I like adding shadows on the lashes/brows itself , make it look solid and 3d , it makes the eyes pop more imo
Using multiply layer to make the shadows darker for more contrast
At some point I’d merge everything together so i can just paint in one layer, easier to fix things with liquify too ; if im in CSP i keep the separate layers in one folder just in case i need em later but i cant really do that in Procreate cos of layer limits
This is the part where i make the shading more painterly .,To make the shading look sharper , i like adding lines on the edges .
The fun part : adding the ✨
This is the part where I add textures , either from texture images or with screentone/hatching brushes. This is also around the part where i add the character’s accessories and stuff like scars and freckles (its just easier to add smaller things near the end than having them accidentally painted over at the start)
Whenever I feel like the drawing looks too much of a similar shade / temperature , I use a gradient map+layer effects (masked) on parts to give it variety . Technically you can do this by just having a layer effect on and manually adding colors but gradient maps make me go “ooooh didnt think of that color there “
CSP also has a posterization filter that i like using when i feel like some part looks too smooth to me.
I sometimes add in sketchy lines , and seeing how cool it looks in Marvel Rivals art ive been adding it more lol
Artists that influenced me are : Nesskain, Toni Infante , Valorant’s 2d art(their main artist is Suke) ,Arcane , Spiderverse and the most recent one ive been obsessing over is Marvel Rivals ( its got everything i want my art to be when it grows older lmao )
