The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening / The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Three sand crabs can be found on the Toronbo Shores, to the east of Link's sword in the game's intro. Sand crabs can also be found in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, with their sprite in the GameBoy releases being reused in The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons. On the Switch remake, their model resembles it's appearance in The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.

Echoes of Wisdom Headcanon Countdown
༺ Day 5 ▪︎ 96 Left
Marin's love of animals (as well as her fear of heights) comes from ALttP Zelda. Zelda hasn't admitted it (because it's a sore subject), but she somewhat wishes she could have seen Link when he was cursed into a pink rabbit. Aside from cursed animals, though, Zelda just seems to have a way with them. In the slight chance she gets to visit Link at his orchard, she is often followed by whatever animals are nearby. It really does remind him of his adventure in the Wind Fish's dream....

Hi so my mental illness keeps winning and I thought y'know?? since I've done ear comparisons and height comparisons for Link, how about skin tone?
I was curious myself for reference reasons and ended up being a little surprised, not only by the tonal variety but also by which Links have darker tones that the fandom totally sleeps on.
Like the height post, this is based solely on sprites / models and not concept or promo art. Notes below:
Tumblr media
I tried colour picking directly from ripped character models for the most amount of accuracy and lack of in-game lighting. This was easier said than done in some cases. TP Link's model looks extremely grey and washed out without the game's lighting, so I had to use a neutral lit screenshot instead. TFH Link obviously does not look like a fucking Simpson, but finding a model without light and shading was impossible. These two were the most challenging.
For some reason, the same Links have drastically different skin tones in different games. Between Z1 and Z2 I can only assume Link became very sickly 😔
Comparing in-game skin tone to concept art is a bit like night and day sometimes. A notable example is ALTTP Link being much much paler (and without the iconic pink hair ofc)
Given the nature of skin, it's difficult to narrow these references down to just one colour. I consider this more a rough guide than a definitive reference sheet. I hope it's helpful, though!

I'm on a mission to draw every Link from every Zelda game. Here are the first 4 from the original game, The Adventure of Link, A Link to the Past and Links Awakening.

Very brief post-completion thoughts on Zelda Link's Awakening
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Recently finished Link’s Awakening and was positively surprised. I didn’t have any high hopes for the game, as I had never played it beforehand, and considering it is a spin off Game Boy title from 1993 (I played the DX version in the Switch virtual console).
But I liked it; it establishes some foundations of the “Zelda formula” that would be later expanded upon by OoT, MM, etc. Like playing different songs on the Ocarina, for example. Besides that, the music and pixel art in the game are really beautiful.
I guess everyone already knows that, but the ending is kind of sad for a Zelda game. The entire game is also kind of strange, with characters from Mario games, like Goombas and Chain Chomps as a regular part of the “fauna”; the Animal Village, with talking animals; the weird owl statues with vague messages; the plot twist, etc. etc.
Before the plot twist, I began to hypothesize that maybe Koholint Island was closer to the wherever the Mario games take place (If I recall correctly, devs usually joked that the two series take place in the same planet, but in lands far away from each other, but I may be completely wrong though), so that “species” that occur there (like Goombas) might also occur naturally in the island. But, after the plot twist, it all seems like some kind of fever dream.
I thought this when I was about the mid game, and now that I finished it I still stick to this thought: Link’s Awakening is the new Majora’s Mask, but nobody understands it yet.
Anyways, the game also has a nice message about making the most of the time you have and to have fun and appreciate the happy times. But also about knowing that these happy times are not eternal. Eventually, everything changes. This is part of life.

Remember the stunning The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX PC port we reported about just the other day? Well, it's sadly no longer.
Nintendo has issued a takedown notice for the fan-made port, and it has now been removed from its itch.io page (thanks to CM30/GamingReinvented!). The HD version of the Game Boy Color version of Link's Awakening was made by user 'linksawakeningdxhd' and added widescreen support, gorgeous HD visuals, and 120fps scrolling.
Now, when heading to the itcho.io page, the following message shows along with a link to Nintendo's own message:
youtube
"This game's files have been suspended for copyright (or trademark) claim."
Nintendo — known for being protective of its IPs and taking down many a fan project in the past, including (famously) AM2R, a remake of Metroid II — issued the takedown notice earlier today, signed 'Nintendo Legal'.
The notice, which you can read via itch.io's takedown page, requests that the creator should "act expeditiously to remove the download and information page for the infringing game", as the HD fan creation "infringes and makes unauthorized use of Nintendo’s copyrights in The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening video game".
