for modern AU fics - what chinese media did diaspora consume?
making this post because some of us in the diaspora server were having a chat about what Chinese media "Diaspora Chinese" watched in the 90's - 2000's (and even sooner than that) while not having access to satellite chinese media or streaming services - this is in the context of writing modern AU fics based off Chinese media/novels (so your main character's grandpa or uncle is not, in fact, watching an episode of Friends or Shortland Street or something as flavour text because sorry what the hell-)
We generally watched a lot of stuff on VCDs, including bootlegged and non-bootlegged movies, shows, anime/donghua. My household had a whole VCD album of this, and a lot of VCDs (even if they were pirated editions) would have a fancy hardcover box with a magnetic clasp and some artwork representing the show on it.
All of this is Mandarin - so not TVB stuff, because I'm from Northern China and I don't know any cantonese - but Canto friends, please feel free to add to the list! This is mostly stuff my parents liked to watch, or I liked to watch with them, with the exception of a few which I mainly watched with friends/cousins when I was maybe (in most cases) eleven/twelve years old onwards. This is a pretty personal list, meant to give people general idea of a possible "ballpark" of sorts, and by no means exhaustive.
Now, for the list of shows which I can confirm I had or someone I know had on VCD or some kind of offline media format lol (I'll try add release year stamps and links to the EN wikipedia where possible):
Period dramas (mostly Qing Dynasty stuff):
Huan Zhu Gege 还珠格格 (1998, April-) This is a classic, so many memes come from this show; hugely popular series, basically cemented Zhang Tie Lin's face as the face of the Qing Emperor for about a decade. Tie Chi Tong Ya Ji Xiao Lan 铁齿铜牙纪晓岚 (2002-2010) - I loved this show as a kid and watched all four seasons on repeat with family... The "trio" in this show are well known and loved.
Amazing Detective Di Ren Jie / 神探狄仁杰 (2004) A very popular and addictive show. Ok now the Big Four:
Romance of 3 kingdoms 1994 / 三国演义 (1994) - a classic that has had many remakes, my older cousin would play this on repeat...
Hong Lou Meng/红楼梦 (1987) - another classic with many remakes, but I think the most recognised by the public one is the 1987 one.
Journey to the West / 西游记 live action (1986) - I think the 1986 version of the live action is the most recognised one. *Shui Hu Zhuan / 水浒传 (1998) - I am not too familliar with the live action of this one in my household tbh bc my mum doesn't like it lol (she keeps saying it's too depressing) but I'm sure it's up there with the rest of the big four, if anyone has an opinion on this one please let me know!
Modern setting shows:
My dad loved all the Sun Honglei (孙红雷 - actor name) stuff, iirc it was a lot of MinGuo period espionage stuff, your shanghai 1920's sxc aesthetic. This actor has been around since 1999? Qian Fu (潜伏)was very famous, and Ren Jian Zheng Dao Shi Cang Sang (人间正道是沧桑)。 These were around '08 and '09.
Chuang Guan Dong - 闯关东 (2008) (Baidu link, sorry - couldn't get an EN wikipedia one). This show was huge when it was airing, everyone was watching it. I was pretty young but even I watched it and got invested ... and I thought it was such an "old person" show at the time lmao. Xiao Bing Zhang Ga / 小兵张嘎 (2004) (sorry, again Baidu link) - yo, anti-japanese war movies set between 1937-1945 were crazy popular - this is one of them and was very popular):
Donghua/Anime (all the stuff kid me watched and some which I didn't but were popular):
喜羊羊与灰太狼 (2005-) Calabash Brothers / 葫芦兄弟 (1986-1987) Black Cat Detective / Hei Mao Jing Zhang 黑猫警长 (1984-2010) Lan Mao Tao Qi 3000 Wen 蓝蓝猫淘气3000问 AKA 蓝猫 (blue cat) (October 1999 - Present) Legend of Ne Zha 哪吒传奇 (2003) Journey to the West/Xi You Ji 西游记 This was truly the Donghua I grew up on from when I was a bb, the OP song and ED song are classic bangers all kids know. Slam Dunk/ 灌篮高手 - People truly watched a lot of anime that may or may not have been terribly dubbed into mando (possibly canto too). Late 80s and 90s kids were all over this, and Dragon Ball, Crayon Shinchan (labixiaoxin).
Taiwanese Dramas:
This is mid-late 2000's, I would be remiss to not talk about the Taiwanese dramas of this era. Mike He, Rainie Yang, Wu Zun (amongst many, many others) were huge. Stuff like Dou Niu Yao Bu Yao, it started with a kiss, Hua Yang Shao Nv (Taiwanese version of Hana Kimi) were all pretty popular. Not sure if these shows all hold up in 2023, but boy were they popular at the time.
Note about CNY:
For CNY, people would try to tune into 春节联欢晚会 (the CCTV official CNY show) at that One Friend Who Had China Satellite TV's house. Zhao Ben Shan / 赵本山 was a comedy staple, and the show would often feature people from the music industry to perform. Eventually these people became more and more relevant to my gen and Jay Chou etc started appearing.
Last but not least Xian Jiaaaan 仙剑:
In 2005 I was all over 仙剑奇侠传 (Chinese Paladin), based off the video game. This show was crazy popular and probably sent me and a whole lot of other kids into Xianxia / Wuxia hell (and Hu Ge hell, and later I came back to love Liu Yifei). Thank you. The OST is a true banger.

Tumblr media
This looks like a fun idea, so here goes! :
Tumblr media
What do you think of this guy🙃?
Oh wow! Good character you chose there ahahaha! Roselle Gustav aka Huang Tao!
First impression
Honestly, I was floating in confusion at the start a bit, considering it was my first Chinese webnovel, so I had a period of readjustment to the writing style (or the translation ig?), so I didn't immediately connect the dots that Roselle was a transmigrator or that he's... kinda "dead" lol
Buuuut, once the dots connected, I did find him quite amusing! Bro's self-confidence gave me second-hand embarrassment, but not That bad. But also, Klein was bashing on him so hard, it was kinda hilarious.
I don't fully remember what impression I had of him, since I was reading pretty slow in the beginning and some ideas were lost, but overall, fun guy lmao
Impression now
Hilarious guy, a meme, a legend.
Yet...
Quite unfortunate that his end was just endless suffering (which will hopefully not be endless haha...). Bro made small mistakes in the beginning when he didn't know Anything, when he was transported to a world he didn't know anything about, forced to adapt and live a new life. I don't know, I find him tragic, just like Klein.
At least he had some good times along the road (especially with a demoness heh). The funny stories were nice to read.
Favorite moment
Basic, but his first talk with Klein. I mean, him meeting a fellow transmigrater and quickly having faith in him was sweet. I really wish to see more of them :>
If we're talking about the diary entries, I'd probably choose when... uhhh the corruption thing. Roselle going to the moon. And when he gazed into the Abyss. I remember how the diary entry abruptly cut off after dumping a lot of info and both Klein and I were Flabbergasted. What did it MEAN-!!
(I have a feeling I'm mixing up the moments, but the feelings remain. The confusion, the anticipation and the wonder from some diary entries were Amazing)
OH, and the last diary entry of course. It was so chill-inducing! It was one of those moments that answered a lot of questions while also bringing even MORE questions. It was just- the atmosphere full of fear and uncertainty, putting into question what that fellow transmigrator went through, wowie~
Idea for a story
Well, let me shuffle in the corner of my brain...
I've always been a fan of Time Travel AUs. So the idea of Klein (at a higher sequence but not Saint Level, maybe? Idk, a lot of possibilities here) travelling to Roselle’s time period and the two of them becoming best buddies (Roselle’s words, not Klein's. Klein's facepalming in the background at Roselle’s shenanigans).
Maybe! It could be a young god Mr Fool using his domain over Space and Time and having a misplaced adventure during Roselle’s time.
(We're pretending the Outer Gods and CW isn't as dauting of a problem as they are in canon, aye?)
Anyway, doesn't matter which version of Klein or during what time he's visiting, it's mandatory that he facepalms at least once :))
Unpopular opinion
Well, I don't know the popular opinions, so I'll guess I'll just go with an opinion.
I mean, he totally could've treated his wife better. I can understand feeling a disconnect with this world and humanity in general, but at least don't bring shame to her name by being a known womanizer, mm? At least divorce or smth, man. You overthrew the government, you could definitely do that.
Unless he actually did divorce her and we just don't know. But otherwise, yeah. Kinda dick move there, Emperor.
Favorite relationship
(Platonic, right?)
Again, basic but. Roselle and Bernadette.
The fact that Bernadette spent so much time searching for a father she was on dubious terms with and how much faith she had that he persevered against all odds.
The fact that Roselle’s one and only tie with this new world was his daughter, his beloved child that he loved with all his might. A child he shared a piece of his old world with. A child he remodeled this entire world's structure for. Absolutely heart-warming.
Favorite headcannon
Hmm let's see...
Huang Tao, as a young individual who surfs the internet, would know a lot of memes or jokes. After becoming Roselle Gustav, those memes aren't easily forgotten.
I mean, is it canon, actually? Maybe he made several Chinese meme references and I missed them lmao. That would be funny
Bonus: imagine Huang Tao and Zhou Mingrui bumped into each other one day, unaware that the next time they'll meet each other, it will be after more than 10 000 years, give or take. ...what's the timeline here?

Since you're doing Grimm for the RWBY OC request, how about a Grimm based on the Tao-Tie from Chinese myths?
Another concept I've been working on previously, though this kinda breaks RWBY canon.
Legends tell of a warrior hailing from Central Mistral, in possession of unmatched skill and the rumoured ability to strike down Grimm with only a look. One who disappeared as spontaneously as he arrived, his actions reduced to anecdotes in the pages of antiquity.
Legends do NOT speak of the truth of his fate, dragged to the feet of the Queen of the Grimm, subjected to dark experimentation and twisted into one her most fearsome and intelligent Hounds...standing upon two legs and wielding the same massive guandao he once used in life.
Stripped of his eyes but compensated with infrared sight, alongside enhanced hearing and smell.

Do you mean, like new Tao Dragon forms for Drayton and Kieran? 🤔
I meant more that if they were related to the Tao Dragons in some way they'd represent the opposite of what the brothers fought for to contrast N and Hilbert/Hilda being the new representations of truth and ideals.
Other reasons for Reshiam fitting more with Drayton and Zekrom with Kieran has to do with things outside the Dragons themselves ig like Reshiram belonging to the older brother and Zekrom the younger brother in the legend.
And also how Opelucid in Black has Drayden as the gym leader and is more modern(aka more connected to Drayton) while in White it's more traditional and has Iris as the gym leader(has more similarities with Kieran).
I see it! Kieran’s hair tie has the color and shape of Iris’s crown but flipped upside down.
Though it's more visible in other stuff like the anime and manga I was refering to Iris' topknot that she has above her ponytail, it's kinda similar to Kieran's own antennas:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also don't get me wrong I get why people say Reshiram and Zekrom are symbolic of Kieran and Drayton respectively but imo the Tao Dragons have elements of both Kieran and Drayton in each of them, so maybe the Original Dragon would be more fitting for them rather than its unfused versions?
Heard some people saying that Drayton and Kieran might represent Zekrom and Reshiram's ideals but I think it's the opposite. Drayton is the reverse arcana version of Reshiram representing dishonesty and Kieran is the reverse arcana version of Zekrom representing obssessive idealism.

the story of Tao Tie (tāo tiè)
Tumblr media
Note: I’ve translated this short backstory of Tao Tie posted by ZYX’s Studio on Weibo for those who are interested! Rough translation, idea is there but might not be the most accurate in terms of the exact phrases used! (all these recent posts about ancient Chinese history/ folktales are really hard to translate it into Eng LOL my god)
A long time ago, there was a folktale of a fearsome beast named ‘Tao Tie (tāo tiè)’, it has the the body of a sheep but the face of a human being. It’s flesh was especially delicious, so delicious that the beast had ate up it’s own body, leaving behind only it’s humongous skull, and a huge, bloody opening on it’s skull. It has been looking for all sorts of desire since ancient times, feasting on all kinds of desire, taking in the greed that was present within the mortals to make itself stronger.
The deity from heaven said that, in the future, Tao Tie will meet someone with the world’s most delicious heart, and once eaten, he would become the most ferocious, and strongest god; but at the same time, he will also meet someone that will destroy him completely, one that has no greed, one with the biggest and strongest soul in the world.
“There’s no way that someone in the world has no greed”, Tao Tie thought, so he wasn’t worried at all. He only felt happy that he will soon meet the one with the most delicious heart.
Until one day, he met two children. He swallowed one of them, but was unable to ate the other one, who was actually the one he was looking for: When the world’s invincible beast met with the purest soul from the mortals, there’s no more lures, and he was eventually being ripped apart as the soul that has completely no greed had consumed and taken over him.
Born with greed, die with greed, both the ferocious beast Tao Tie, and the child with a crystal clear soul live within our hearts. Whether it was Tao Tie who ate the child, or the child who tore Tao Tie apart, the folktale can’t give us a definite answer, it it up to every individual’s decision - This song written, and this dance prepared, that talks about this legend, for greed, for Tao Tie, and for all of us who are entrapped by greed.

Great Wall
2017  PG-13 action adventure fantasy  Matt Damon, Tian Jing, Willem  Dafoe, Pedro Pascal For a movie called the great wall, I found a lack of posters without it in it. It’s mostly just the actors with the text(maybe a small fore-image or background image of the wall.  If there are any (They are from China and those countries, a few I’ve seen but they are more art than an image from the movie.) RARE Hoonpayon Ta-pa-kaao Mai Tao Yod Thong. An unknown origin, a custom-made, a handmade piece of a Hoonpayon in Court Brahmin Priest attire (Ta-pa-kaao) statue, with a gold knob handle walking stick. The statue was made from holy powder blended with plaster cement with 2 layers, painted with water color, and patched with gold foils on the gold knob handle.
………………………………………………
WHAT IS HOONPAYON?
Hoonpayon is a magical humble servant who watches over you and obeys your commands.
HOW WAS IT MADE?
Hoonpayon figurine can be made of any material usually out of straw, rattan, clay, wooden stick, metal, herbal and holy powder..etc After that human form figurine was made, Monk, Sorcerer and/or White Robe Master would tie up the figurine with Sai Sin (holy string) and/or other type of string (dead human hair of the head, string made of dead people clothing…etc), then Monk, Sorcerer and/or White Robe Master would cast spells “Khata Chumnoom Taat Lae Tang Taat Tang Si (spells to create 4 elements (earth, water, fire, and air)” on arms, legs, foreheads and hearts of the figurines, then Monk, Sorcerer and/or White Robe Master would call soul of any dead man to stay in the figurine. Then Monk, Sorcerer and/or White Robe Master would lay figurine on the ground and chant special Khata/spells to wake up the Hoonpayon, the Hoonpayon must be animated and it could stand up by itself on its own feet.
*REMARK: Kumanthong, and Hoonpayon are the same, but Hoonpayon is with soul of adult male who do heavy duty job. In ancient Thailand, Hoonpayon was used in battle fields to defeat the enemies, guarded the army camps at night, and it was sent to kill the Leaders of enemies..etc
Nowadays, many Thai women are using Hoonpayon to accompany them while driving alone at night for their safety. The criminals would dare to do harm, they would see women are not driving alone, there are big tough guys accompanying them.

THE LEGEND OF TA-PA-KAAO
Ta-pa-kaao, legend has it that in BE 1900 (CE 1357), in the reign of King Lithai of Kingdom of Sukhothai, King Lithai had intention to make 3 extra-large statues of Buddha, Pra Buddha Chinnarat, Pra Buddha Chinnasi, and Pra Si Satsada. King Lithai commanded 5 of Court Brahmin Priests to cast those 3 statues. At the Casting Process, the 2 statues were completed, but Pra Buddha Chinnarat.
There were pouring casting defects, the liquid metal did not completely fill the mold cavity of Pra Buddha Chinnarat Statue. The Court Brahmin Priests must performed rituals to recast Pra Buddha Chinnarat over again for another 3 occasions, but those processes were failing with the same defects. So, King Lithai conducted a ritual to request help from devas, later on that day there was an unknown Ta-pa-kaao (a Court Brahmin Priest) came to the casting process of Pra Buddha Chinnaraj, he kept silent, but doing casting process without having meals, taking time off and resting, and finally the Statue of Pra Buddha Chinnaraj was beautifully made. King Lithai was informed by 5 Court Brahmin Priests that “Ta-pa-kaao” had helped to complete such casting process of Pra Buddha Chinnaraj, and “Ta-pa-kaao” deserved a reward, but “Ta-pa-kaao” was missing, no one knew who he was, and where he was from. King Lithai realized that “Ta-pa-kaao” must be a deva who came help as requested.
