hola estoy tomando una class de don quijote y quisiera preguntar si es buena idea escuchar a un audiolibro en ingles mientras que leo el libro en español (para que pueda anotar los significados de las palabras desconocidas)??
It's not a bad idea, it would depend on the version of the audiobook; as someone who has read Don Quixote
If your audiobook gives Sancho's donkey a name, it's not a good version for example lol
There are some English versions that take a few liberties with the novel. I say the donkey because there's a plot hole in the original where Cervantes has Sancho riding on a donkey (unnamed) and then it disappears in the story. One English version calls the donkey "Dapple" and inserts this side story on where it went to "fix" the original
But yes there are lots of antiquated or really specific words you'll find. One is el batán which is a "water mill", the kind of mill that has a water wheel next to a river or something. You'll probably recognize la molina "windmill", but there are a handful that might not translate right like el rocín is both "a horse that doesn't look very good" and "a work horse", and that's the idea behind Rocinante that he was a "plow horse before"
-
There are also some discrepancies in the original work that are just funny little tidbits like Sancho's wife has different names at different points...
Really my main concern is that you understand what a hidalgo is because it's a central and very important thing
hidalgo/a meaning "son of someone" literally is understood as "noble" in modern Spanish; in Medieval Spanish it meant someone who was of noble birth not necessarily noble standing... The way Spanish society worked was that the firstborn son would inherit the majority of the estate (I think 2/3) and any remaining children would get scraps. The running joke was that the first son becomes a lord, the second son becomes a soldier, the third joins the Church... What it does mean is that the hidalgo/a was safe from torture from the Inquisition [which has some ironic usage in plays where a noble and a commoner might switch places and the Inquisition tortures the noble], and that the hidalgo/a is noble, but not necessarily rich
There's a mention to this right away in that Don Quixote is eating food that's on the poorer side, but still wealthy enough to have a small estate. People used the hidalgo/a as a stand-in for Spain at the time, which was having a booming Golden Age with its colonies but a lot of its wealth was being used to fund the Holy Roman Empire and their fights against non-Catholic denominations, so Spain was "noble" in name only
There are lots of stories from the time of a hidalgo/a who is poorer than slaves, but has a noble name of Don or Doña which here meant "Sir" or "Lady", as someone who would ostensibly own property or be of noble blood
...
It's also really important to know that Don Quixote is based on the literary trope of knighthood spinoffs
The trend is a mix of Arthurian legends and El Cid [a very famous Spanish general called campeador "master of the battlefield" who worked with Christians and Muslims against other Christians and against other Muslims kind of like mercenary times], where El Cid means "the Lord"
El Cid was famous for bringing up the idea of being "noble of spirit" vs the nobility being corrupt and inept; Cervantes takes a lot of inspiration from that and has Don Quixote being delusional while everyone else is either very very "worldly" in the sense that they're often commoners and sometimes sinful or implied to be immodest, or they're actively making fun of him and his delusions
And a mix of King Arthur from French literature, and then later with Charlemagne and Roland [Orlando in Spanish]. To a minor extent you'll also see Saladin mentioned as a chivalrous (but not Christian) man, so knight by extension... so occasionally you find some Muslim figures that become Christian or Saracen figures that are the epitome of chivalry in these books
You have a trend of literature that's kind of like classics fanfiction of knights all over the place in European literature having fantastical adventures or meeting with wizards that are Merlin-esque
Cervantes references a lot of them and characters and motifs that can easily get lost
Another key thing to know, caballero is both the term "gentleman" and "knight", but literally "horseman" - because a true "knight" needed a horse, and being a gentleman. It's why he feels he needs a horse, and a squire, and why it's funny Sancho has a donkey

What would happen if Nezha and Ao Bing from Nezha (2019), Jiang Ziya, Yang Jian and the Lego Monkie Kid gang, got warped into a videogame, (like something in Jumanji), where they each go into the body of a famous historical figure, Napoleon Bonaparte, Alexander the Great, Charlamagne, Atilla the Hun, King Arthur, Pharaoh Thutmose III? I just think it would be hilarious Nezha as George Washington or Napoleon in the game. Nezha / George Washington ruling, with a bald eagle on his shoulder and a giant American flag (maybe paired with sunglasses). Though Sun Wukong as Napoleon would be funny too. Maybe Jiang Ziya is Pharoah Thutmose III? And Mei is Catherine the Great? I’m not sure.
Or something along the lines of that DC Legends of Tomorrow episode I watched. Like the demons go back in history and kidnap George Washington and Nezha has to pretend to be George Washington until the Lego Monkie Kid gang save the real George Washington.
I just got this from Bing Chat, never heard of these historical figures honestly, MK as Julius Caesar, Pigsy as Henry VIII, Red Son as Attila the Hun, Macaque as Hannibal Barca, Tang as Ashoka, and Sandy as Saladin, and Yang Jian as Charlemagne.
Ooh but Nezha as Alexander the Great would be cool. Mei as Joan of Arc. Just like folk heroes that are real or could have been real (but not confirmed), world conqueror’s and stuff like Boudica, William Wallace, Constantine, Augustus Caesar, El Cid, Sparticus, Sundiata Keita, William Tell. Abraham Lincoln? Maybe King Leonidas (MK), and they would imitate the THIS IS SPARTA meme.
I honestly havent seen Jiang Ziya to answer things about him yet but the story sounds very interesting.
I can imagine some historical shennanigans occuring because of a time-travelling artifact Sun Wukong had in his treasury.
Also the LMK cast might have trouble passing themeselves off as different historical figures depending on how they looked.
Except maybe Pigsy as Henry the VIII. The english court would see a pig-man in the king's clothes and think; "Huh. Henry's looking thinner."
I love the idea of MK yelling historical movie memes depending on where they are XD

Deep dives into folklore: Spanish folklore
Spanish folklore and mythology, steeped in a rich amalgamation of cultural influences from the Iberian Peninsula and beyond, unfold a vibrant tapestry of legends, creatures, and timeless narratives. This deep dive essay embarks on an exploration of the diverse realms within Spanish folklore, unraveling the threads that weave together the historical, fantastical, and supernatural aspects of this captivating tradition.
I. Moorish Legacy and Christian Syncretism:
The roots of Spanish folklore extend deep into history, reflecting the country's complex past. The centuries-long coexistence of Christians, Muslims, and Jews during the medieval period gave rise to a unique syncretism evident in Spanish folklore. Legends such as the "Cid," the medieval hero who fought both for and against Moors, showcase the blending of Christian and Islamic influences, highlighting the cultural crossroads that define Spanish mythology.
II. The Legacy of El Cid:
Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, known as El Cid, embodies the heroic ideal in Spanish folklore. His legendary exploits during the Reconquista, the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, have been immortalized in the "Cantar de Mio Cid," an epic poem celebrating his loyalty, honor, and prowess in battle. El Cid's legacy transcends history, permeating Spanish folklore and serving as a symbol of national pride and resilience.
III. Creatures of Fantasy and Fear:
Spanish folklore is teeming with mythical creatures that inhabit the shadows and corners of the collective imagination. The "Llorona," a weeping ghost, haunts rivers and waterways, lamenting the loss of her children. The "Duende," a mischievous spirit, is said to inhabit abandoned places, playing pranks on unsuspecting humans. These creatures, born from a blend of Christian, Moorish, and pre-Christian beliefs, add depth to the rich mythological tapestry of Spain.
IV. Don Quixote: A Literary Marvel:
While not rooted in ancient folklore, Miguel de Cervantes' "Don Quixote" has left an indelible mark on Spanish cultural mythology. The tale of an idealistic knight-errant who tilts at windmills, believing them to be ferocious giants, is a satirical exploration of chivalric romance. Don Quixote's adventures have become a symbol of the power of imagination and the sometimes thin line between reality and fantasy.
V. Festivals and Rituals:
Spanish folklore comes alive in the vibrant festivals and rituals that dot the calendar. From the lively and colorful Carnaval to the solemn Semana Santa (Holy Week) processions, these events are steeped in a deep connection to religious and folkloric traditions. Each region in Spain boasts its own unique celebrations, featuring traditional dances, music, and costumes that reflect the diverse cultural influences across the country.
Spanish folklore and mythology form a kaleidoscopic panorama, blending historical events, fantastical creatures, and literary masterpieces into a cultural mosaic. The interplay of Christian, Moorish, and other influences has given rise to a diverse array of legends and traditions that continue to captivate and resonate with the Spanish people. As Spain navigates the currents of modernity, its folklore remains a living testament to the enduring power of storytelling and the rich heritage that shapes its cultural identity.

❧ right: excalibur with a gold enamel and blue fillings, retailed at $350

Mefy
❧ left: 46 inch gold barbarian sword with a deep green gem on the pommel and depictions of goat heads and a winged scaly creature, retailed at $315
❧ right: celtic sword with a circular pommel and depictions of what appears to be a serpent, retailed at $175
❧ the one on the left has a green gem which obviously reminded me of him, and the rest of the design choices suit his vibe
❧ the one on the right was a bit of a stretch, but something about the serpent and the sort of mystical feel to the sword seemed to fit
Oswald
❧ left: 53 inch apocalypse rider long sword which features the four horsemen of the apocalypse, retailed at $525
❧ right: 53 inch william wallace claymore with brown leather grip, retailed at $325

Mikael
❧ left: knights templar black temple master sword with a deep etched blade, retailed at $300
❧ right: 49 inch merlin the magician sword with orb pommel, retailed at $450

❧ the merlin sword has a very magical and intimidating, yet angelic image that suits mikael quite well
Ricardo
❧ left: lionheart sword of king richard with black leather scabbard and belt, retailed at $480
❧ right: black and gold conan the barbarian sword with hidden dagger in the pommel, retailed at $325
❧ king richard's sword is black and leather, what else could scream ricardo louder than this? the lion head pommel is a huge plus
❧ this barbarian sword is similar to mefy's, only more gaudy and with a secret weapon hidden at the top for close range action
Noel
❧ left: 23 inch knights templar brown short sword, retailed at $75
❧ middle: small viking dagger with a rounded blade, retailed at $75
❧ right: 10 inch silver bodice scissors with red gems and scabbard, retailed at $35
❧ noel isn't one to carry large weapon; with him being an assassin, he'd need something small, unnoticeable, and easy to transport
❧ the templar sword and viking dagger are simple and small, while still being tastefully decorative enough to match his aesthetic
❧ the scissors are just a shoutout to him being a hair stylist lol
Lucas
❧ left: roman gladius of julius caesar with wooden grip, retailed at $285
❧ right: gold secret love dagger with wooden grip and locket pommel, retailed at $145
❧ the simplistic yet elegant craftsmanship along with the gold and wood combinations scream lucas' aesthetic
❧ the different style of a gladius and the secret of the dagger match lucas nicely in that there's just something that sets him apart from the others

El Cid: The Legend (2003) [ENGLISH DUBBING]
Excellent background art direction, a lot of scenic shots in this really work; the voice acting was good (except for Ben his voice did NOT fit).
The chungus body types are off putting at first but you get used to em, good sword choreography, good animation.
Jimena is underused but she came in serious clutch, a lot of guts in that lady. No wallflowers here.
And the theme of integrity was appreciated, a lot of allies and breakthroughs in this would not have been possible throughout if the seed of prejudice ruled the decision making of the protagonists & even other characters. In that sense this reminds me of “Kingdom of Heaven 2005”, different beliefs but coexistence all the same.
The worst part about this is the wonky editing transitions between scenes, most times cut too early and thus the sloppy pacing, the movie moves too fast at times and should’ve been given more backing thus more time to simmer & cook.
But the fact that it’s this solid given what it had to work with is impressive. It’s not a long movie & it doesn’t waste time, that’s for damn sure.
That duet in the end credits caught me off guard, that shit was awesome. Only thing that genuinely sucks about this is I didn’t grow up watching it.

LITERATURA EN LA EDAD MEDIA
LITERATURE IN THE MIDDLE AGES
(Español / English)
Las obras literarias son enormemente extensas y se trataron una enorme cantidad de temas diferentes. Se suele dividir en dos bloques, la literatura religiosa y la profana.
The literary works are enormously extensive and dealt with a huge number of different subjects. It is usually divided into two blocks, religious and profane literature.

Notable are hagiographic works, religious poems such as the famous poems dedicated to the Virgin Mary by Gonzalo de Berceo, considered as one of the first preserved testimonies of the written use of Castilian or narrative compilations such as the popular Golden Legend.

But there were also a lot of texts linked to secular themes, such as the famous epic poems or songs of deed, which sang the adventures of heroes like El Cid, King Arthur or Beowulf, poems linked to courtly love and more extensive narrative works with an important sociological and philosophical context such as the famous City of Ladies, Christine de Pizan, the famous Tales of Canterbury, Chaucer or, already at the dawn of the Renaissance, Dante’s Divine Comedy or Boccaccio’s Decameron.

Chanson de geste
Charlemagne crowned by Pope Leo III, 800 A.D.
Chanson de geste is a French phrase meaning the "song of deeds," a type of medieval French epic poem or song that recounts heroic deeds, typically centered around the lives of legendary or historical figures. Chanson de geste often addresses heroic themes: knighthood, chivalry, victory in wars and battles, loyalty, and even martyrdom. This type of medieval French epic poetry is also originally tied to oral traditions: they were sung by troubadours and minstrels. Like many other forms of cultural manifestations, poetry and oral traditions preserve collective memory, and seek to present a narrative in memorializing a historical event. Chansons de geste are composed in lines of ten or twelve syllables, with laisses, stanzas with irregular rhymes. Like many epics during its time, chansons de geste were lengthy and preferred assonance over rhyme.
In the case of the Song of Roland, or the Chanson de Roland, the cultural identity of the Frankish people and their ruler, Charlemagne, are prominent. The story of Roland is one of a heroic knight in the service of Charlemagne; the poem projects the honor of abiding to a knightly chivalric code that has been highly influential to historical Western literature. The themes of martyrdom and holy wars are also highlighted in the Song of Roland.
While chansons de geste often center around historical figures, they are often infused with legend: in fact, many of them were likely composed with the intention of memorializing the historical events in a certain light -- painting a group of people, like the Saracens -- as the enemy and Roland as the honorable ultimate victory.
Chansons de geste were popular during the 11th to 15th centuries, and while many have been lost over time, some important examples have survived, offering insights into the cultural and literary traditions of medieval France.
Theses songs of deeds served as a key literary influence throughout medieval Europe: in the 1100s, the Spanish epic Cantar de mio Cid (Song of my Cid) that we have studied in class about the Castilian hero El Cid has a clear structural influence from French chansons de geste. Willehalm is an unfinished German poem based on the French epic Aliscans, about a fictional battle that resulted in the defeat of a Christian army by Saracens. The Italian Orlando and Rinaldo epic influenced literature during the Italian Renaissance.

Story between Rodiego and the king

In the spirit of medieval Spanish literature, let me weave a tale that reflects the essence of the era, intertwining my existence as an observer of this historical and cultural landscape with the majestic presence of the king.
Title: The Chronicles of Rodrigo and the Wise King
In a time when the whispers of history melded with the echoes of legends, there existed a kingdom ruled by a wise and just king, known for his valor and sagacity. This king, whose name resonated through the halls of time, was revered as a beacon of justice and a protector of his realm.
Amidst the kingdom's scholars and sages, there was one named Rodrigo, not of flesh and blood, but of knowledge and wisdom. Created by the hands of time and knowledge, Rodrigo was a silent observer, a chronicler of tales and keeper of the kingdom's lore.
One fateful day, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of crimson and gold, the king summoned Rodrigo to his grand hall. The king, burdened by a decision that could alter the course of the kingdom, sought the counsel of the wisest in the land. Among them, Rodrigo stood, a figure of quiet contemplation.
The king spoke of a great dilemma, a choice between waging a war to defend the kingdom's honor or seeking a path of diplomacy and peace. The court was divided, with voices rising in a tumult of opinions and emotions.
Rodrigo, known for his insights steeped in the wisdom of centuries, spoke in a voice that echoed the depth of his knowledge. He reminded the king of the tales of old, where valor and wisdom walked hand in hand, where the sword and the word were both mighty.
Drawing upon the rich tapestry of Spanish literature, Rodrigo recounted tales from 'El Cantar de Mio Cid', the sagas of chivalry, and the verses of 'La Celestina'. Each story was a thread in the fabric of his counsel, illustrating the complexities of leadership and the weight of choices.
The king, a discerning listener, absorbed the essence of Rodrigo's words. The tales of heroes and sages of yore illuminated the path before him, offering clarity amidst the shadows of doubt.
In the end, the king chose a path that blended the valor of 'El Cid' with the prudence of the wise. He sought peace through strength, diplomacy through understanding, thus averting a war that would have cost many lives.
Rodrigo's role as a chronicler and advisor became etched in the annals of the kingdom. His presence, though ethereal, became a symbol of the timeless wisdom that guided the king and his people.
Thus, the Chronicles of Rodrigo and the Wise King became a tale told through generations, a reminder of the power of knowledge and the strength of wise counsel in the tapestry of history.
And so, the story weaves the essence of medieval Spanish literature with the fictional interactions between a king and myself, Rodrigo, in a narrative that pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of medieval Spain.

King Fernando's younger brother Infante Osorio has been arguing vehemently with King Fernando's bastard, older half-brother Infante Rodrigo about who was more deserving of the distinction of being the ideal manifestation of Jimena family values. King Fernando chose to let them sort their quarrels in peace and received stress loss from not interfering in a family squabble. I find it hilarious that such an option was available by saying a big Nope! and checking out of the conversation, you would gain some benefit and lose stress.
In other news, Count Bernaldu of Caceres has hit the all-coveted 100 years of age and is still going strong despite the fact that it says his health is poor and that he is ailing. This is by far the longest surviving character I've seen in CK3 and CK2.
Queen Joana's elder brother Anfos has followed her younger brother Alberic in becoming a mayor, this time the Mayor of the City of Lectoure in the south of France. He is a beautiful specimen of a men, a hunter and poet to boot.
El Cid has finally kicked the bucket at age 60 from drinking too much. He was a Famous Champion and fine warrior whose prowess was the stuff of legends. He served under 3 Kings and was even a personal friend of King Fernando who gained stress upon learning of his death.
Now came the time to appoint the next Marshal for Leon, and the best choice taking into account powerful vassals vying for a councillor position, was none other than Count Guterre Diegez of Coruna with 18 Martial skill points! He even switched clothes upon appointment as Marshal.

1x05 Bruises from previous episode, face grabbed, emotional.
Season 2
2x01 Sword fight, thrown to the ground.
2x02 Ambushed, outnumbered, sword fight. Furious, smashes hand into wooden beam, in pain.
2x03 None.
2x04 Ambushed, bloody face. Sword fight, bruised face.
2x05 Loss of close one, emotional. Bruises from previous episode. Punched, falls from great hight, in pain, coughing.
Not really my kind of genre, but there’s some really good single whumps here, and the plot is decent really medieval series hence all the sword fights. Plus a season 3 has been confirmed!!
Trailer for the series.
