I already talked about Sabo being kind of a parallel protagonist to Luffy, but Koby is in some ways maybe even more so (especially since he was introduced literally in chapter 2)
Sabo is Luffy's dad's protégé
Koby is Luffy's grandpa's protégé
(Sidenote: Luffy kinda took Ace's place as Shanks' and Rayleigh's protégé, arguably; I mean it would have made a lot of sense for former Roger pirates to act as mentor figures for Roger's son, wouldn't it? In a different story that put more importance to bloodlines, Ace would have been destined to be the next King of the Pirates for sure. Ace is kind of a decoy protagonist)
With Koby it's even more obvious when you look at the known SWORD members and how many of them have some kind of legacy position, or at least we can assume so even if we don't know for certain (like with Hibari suspiciously sharing Akainu's dialect). In theory, Garp's grandson would fit into SWORD perfectly.
And of course Garp very much intended this to be Luffy. It's not even subtle that Koby is the replacement grandson lmao
(Say what you want about Dragon's (lack of) parenting, he definitely didn't put any pressure on Luffy. So with Sabo it's not really the same, it's not like Luffy refused to follow in his father's footsteps; he didn't even know he had a father, much less what those footsteps were. But the parallels are still there)
But yeah, I think their personal connections to Luffy, as well as the way they're set up in positions that Luffy plausibly might have had in some alternate timelines, makes them Luffy's counterparts in the Navy and in the Revolutionary Army. Which allows them to function as pseudo-protagonists for the audience when Luffy isn't present and to take on plotlines that would otherwise feel like they should be handled by the main characters (like taking on the Blackbeard Pirates and the Celestial Dragons respectively)
Narratively speaking, as the plot gets bigger, you kinda need these secondary protagonists to carry the parts of the story that Luffy can't be there for
The three of them also represent different shounen protagonist archetypes:
I kinda struggled to phrase this myself (and honestly I just have a very limited reference pool for shounen anime) so I googled it and I'm stealing the terms from this post
Basically Luffy is the "Idiot Hero", Koby is the "Boy Wonder" and Sabo... well actually I think Ace is the "Punk Martyr" (he took the martyr part a bit too seriously rip), and Sabo is the secret fourth thing: the Cool Competent Guy (even though Sabo is also a punk, he just hides it better)
Luffy is a Goku, Koby is a Deku, and Sabo is... idk I guess he would be a Lelouch (look, I'm talking about character TYPES, not saying they're the same kind of person)
... Well actually Sabo is more of an Enjolras, but Les Mis is not a shounen manga—
SIKE, IT IS, I'M COUNTING IT
(That's a really good adaptation of Les Mis btw, I could gush endlessly about Takahiro Arai and how well he understood not only the core of the story but also how to adapt it into a visual medium, really leaning into the vivid metaphorical imagery in Hugo's narration and then adding to it his own, it's SO GOOD)
(To immediately nitpick myself: Sabo is more like an amalgamation of all the Amis de l'ABC but it's easier to say Enjolras for short. Also yes I know Enjolras isn't the protagonist, but he has protagonist energy)
Anyway... what was I saying?
Right, I was gonna talk about the hero thing, because heroism is actually a big theme in One Piece:
Luffy doesn't want to be a hero, BUT KOBY DOES. He might be sheepish about calling himself one, but it was his dream, and by all conventional standards he accomplished it: he's now a Navy Hero
Sabo is more of a reluctant hero; he wanted to be a pirate like Luffy but chose to become a revolutionary instead. He's fully committed to that role though, even willing to accept the title of regicide if it helps the cause (this btw also makes him similar to another character in Les Mis, the Conventionist who... okay fine I'll stop)
As a marine and a revolutionary, Koby and Sabo are on the opposite sides of the whole "hero" thing. Although well, neither of them are extremists so at the same time they're not that opposite either, more like just each others' counterparts on opposing sides, but still
It makes sense that Koby, whose ambition was to become a hero, would gravitate to the conventional and widely accepted form of heroism: military heroism. Meanwhile Sabo, the reluctant hero, was driven to become one exactly because those socially accepted forms of heroism in reality exist to maintain an unjust system and there need to be people who step up to oppose that system, it's heroism out of necessity
You could also say that Koby becomes a part of the system because he wants to be a hero, Sabo becomes a hero because he wants to escape the system...
(Sidenote: I actually have a hunch that Dragon is probably more like Koby in terms of personality and ambitions, he's just a Koby who became disillusioned after learning the truth about the navy. That's the vibe I get anyway)
Either way, both of them are a good contrast to Luffy, who insists that he's not a hero and who chooses to just follow his selfish whims, which is why he's the pirate, he picks the least "heroic" career option. And that's why he's the protagonist, because this is a pirate manga
That said, as it turns out, his selfish whims are pretty heroic anyway, and he ends up being the one who has the most freedom to do exactly what needs to be done, BECAUSE he's not a hero
(Is that extremely dangerous? Sure. Could it end really badly? Yes. But Luffy isn't supposed to be a role model, he's literally a pirate)
But it still helps the narrative to also have heroic characters who aren't only motivated to help people who give them food lol
(I kid, but ykwim)
It helps that there are heroes even if the protagonist isn't one, because otherwise the audience might start wanting the protagonist to become the hero
And then it wouldn't be a pirate adventure story anymore, it would become a hero narrative
....
.... I know I should end the post here but you have no idea how much I'm holding back a rant rn about the marines and how much they suck and why I find Koby so frustrating as a character... That's another post tho
#wow this turned into a rambly post#i should probably split it into multiple shorter posts with more consise wording#but im lazy#one piece analysis#coby#koby#revolutionary sabo#flame emperor sabo#sabo#monkey d luffy

I feel like the Thunderbolts have a massive cult following SPECIFICALLY (and only) in Burton Canyon.
You know how Tbolts merch used to be everywhere? People probably threw it out after they turned out to be frauds, except as it turns out that stuff is still appreciated in Burton Canyon, and people will think you're cool for wearing it. Kinda like how people joke that Mexicans will be nice to you if they see you wear a Goku shirt.
Maybe they've got a museum (a small one, maybe it's like three rooms at most) where they keep memorabilia that has zero value outside of town. Like, there's a picture of that one time Charcoal stopped a rock slide, or here's a piece of Mach-2's armour that fell off during a battle or something. It's all junk, but people show it to their kids with pride in their voices.
They can't access Thunderbolts Mountain after SHIELD closed it off, but maybe they've got a little monument at the borrom, maybe just a sign that says "This here used to be the base of the Thunderbolts, heroes of Burton Canyon" and if they catch you littering they'll throw sticks at you.
And I know that in the actual comics they don't really interact with the city all that much, like they live there for a while and in some very brief scenes it's showed that they made some friends but we don't really get a single hero/civilian friendship that is fleshed out beyond a pretty superficial level. And you could argue most of the trouble that happened in Burton Canyon at all was their own fault to begin with-
I just like the idea that the Thunderbolts left some good behind them, since as of right now, their only legacy is...do they have one...? Half the team is back to being villains, Jolt is God knows where Ghost put her, Mach and Charcoal are just dead with nobody to actually mourn them (I mean Charlie got thanosed out the story for copyright reasons and I don't even know if they're ALLOWED to mention him- as for Abe I guess Melissa's sad for a page but she hasn't been in anything since - for 7 ACTUAL YEARS - so it's not like his death really did anything).
The only legacy the original Thunderbolts can even claim to have is Songbird who, in case you haven't heard yet, is actually gonna be in a Thunderbolts comic next February. You hear that? The character who is FACTUALLY THE PROTAGONIST OF THIS SERIES is appearing in said series after 7 years of radio silence. ✨️Legacy, people, legacy✨️.
I accidentally just rehashed the one point I already made a whole rant post about, cheers.
So, to summarise: I WANT TO BELIEVE THERE IS SOMEONE IN THIS AWFUL EVIL WORLD THAT REMEMBERS THE ORIGINAL THUNDERBOLTS FONDLY.
I don't care if it's unfounded in canon, gimme those good feels or I swear to God-
#for all this to work I feel they should've helped around the city or something#while we never see any of that I think I'll just add it to my headcanon#like SURELY they had the time to help an old lady or two cross the street you know#helmut zemo#melissa gold#karla sofen#paul norbert ebersol#erik josten#abe jenkins#charlie burlingame#hallie takahama#thunderbolts#thunderbolts og

Goku: Hey, dad.
Bardock: Hmm?
Goku: I was wondering... What can you tell me about Frieza?
Bardock: 💢
Goku: ...uh
Bardock: We don't talk about Frieza.
Goku: I know. But like hypothetically, if he were to see you...
Bardock: God damn it, Kakarot! Go do something useful before they get here.
Goku: I just wanna know if it was generally negative or, like, less negative...
Gine pops out of nowhere: It was insane!
Bardock: Gine.
Gine: There was this bright light and bah Bah Bah BOW!!!
Bardock: Gine!
Gine:🤭 what
Bardock: Ugh.
Bardock: We don't talk about Frieza, no, no, no. We don't talk about Frieza.
But!
Raditz was a little shi-
Gine: Raditz was a cutie
Bardock: The Prince was a baby, and there wasn't a cloud in the sky
Gine: And then King Cold's ship stopped by
Bardock: Frieza steps in with an ominous grin
Gine: Danger!
Bardock: You telling this story, or am I?
Gine: I'm sorry, Mr. Saiyantist🫡😋
Bardock: Called Saiyans home and cut us off
Gine: Bardock got the escape pod~
Bardock: In doing so, he blows us up
Gine: Believing tales of the gods~
Bardock: Ensuring his reign never stops
Gine: What a tragic day. What more to say
Both: We don't talk about Frieza, no, no, no. We don't talk about Frieza.
King Vegeta: Learned to live in fear of Frieza's temperance and grumbling. Figure out the best way to avoid the bodies tumbling. I associate the screams of pain with pointing hands.
pew, pew, pew
King Vegeta: Legacy and legions of the family's fumblings. Allied with a God that said our kind will need humbling. Grappling with prophecies they couldn't understand.
Do you understand?
Raditz: 5 foot 2 frame, slimey like a lizard.
When you catch his eye, the chills rival a blizzard
Yeah, he haunts your dreams.
Feasts on your screams.
Bardock: Hey! Hits Raditz upside the head
We don't talk about Frieza, no, no, no.
All: We don't talk about Frieza.
Selypa: They told us to join the fight while our comrades fled
Toma: Beat within an inch of life, hanging on by a thread
Toteppo: They told me all my hair would disappear. Now look at my head
All: Your fate is sealed when the icejin want you dead.
Prince Vegeta: He told me that the throne at his knees was predestined to never be mine
He told me that my power would thrive, so long as the saiyans stayed in line
Nappa: My leige, King Cold is on his way
King Vegeta: He told me that my son would be his
Taken away from me, a prize held as leverage
There's nothing I can do
Prince Vegeta: Third class. I want not a sound out of you.
King V: Is there nothing I can do!
Goku: uhm Frieza
Yeah, about that Frieza
I really need to fight this Frieza
Give me the strength to defeat that Frieza.
Raditz: Oh, your Highness, the emperor's here!! Gets smacked with a tail
And then Cacophony of Epicness.
So. Frickin. COOL.
Imagine if people worked with OP to make a whole animatic. Or if TFS did another song parody with their voice actors. Jorongbak is a frickin genius.

"The Earth just draw the attention of some of the most despicable beings the universe has to offer. If something isn't done soon, we could find ourselves in a lot of trouble. what can we do? We could try to wish our enemies away, but even the great Shenron might be powerless against their tremendous strength. Goku is the greatest Warrior the Earth has ever known. Yet to these Saiyans, he's nothing more than an inconvenience. I wonder if King Kai's instruction will even help? Until Goku returns, it seems Gohan is our best hope. He's young though, and there's so little time." - Kami, Dragon Ball Z Kai (Ep. 04)
The Toonami Trending Rundown for March 2-4, 9-10, and 16-17, 2024. The 27th anniversary of the better cartoon came on a somber note, as it was reported on March 8th that Akira Toriyama, the creator of the Dragon Ball franchise, had passed away on March 1st at the age of 68 due to acute subdural hematoma. Dragon Ball is considered to be Toonami’s greatest success story, as since DBZ first aired in the lineup back in 1999, the show led the charge to bring about the 90’s-2000’s anime boom and the overall popularity of anime in the west today.
And as the anime world paid their respects to a legend, Toonami fans celebrated the life and legacy of Toriyama the best way they knew how, by enjoying Dragon Ball Z on Toonami.
Toonami made a quick tribute to Toriyama during the night of March 9 as the news came on short notice for the Toonami staff. But for the following week on the night of March 16-17, following the regular schedule (save for One Piece and Naruto which took the night off), Toonami aired a marathon of the first eight episodes of DBZ Kai.
youtube
In regards to social media buzz, For the night of March 2-3, #Toonami trended in the United States on Twitter alongside Ninja Kamui, Demon Slayer, and Lycoris Recoil. #Toonami also trended on Tumblr alongside Naruto Shippuden. Later, on the night of March 9-10, #Toonami also trended alongside Ninja Kamui, Demon Slayer, and Lycoris Recoil; with #Toonami and Demon Slayer trending alongside the late Akira Toriyama, Dragon Ball Z, and DBZ. And on the night of March 16-17, #Toonami trended on Twitter alongside Ninja Kamui, Lycoris Recoil and DBZ Kai. #Toonami also trended on Tumblr.
As a bonus, this rundown includes a list of trends that occurred when we got the news of Toriyama’s passing to showcase his impact to the world. Besides Akira Toriyama, #Toonami and other Dragon Ball related content trended as fans made their tributes to Toriyama.
On a more positive note, on March 8, Viz Media and Toonami announced that Zom 100, the hit new anime series by Haro Aso and Kotaro Takata, will be airing on Toonami beginning this March 30, 2024 at 12:30 a.m. Zom 100 will be replacing Demon Slayer on the lineup, which will be going on hiatus from the block after completing the Entertainment District Arc the week before on March 23. There is no word when Toonami and Aniplex plan on airing the show’s next season, the Swordsmith Village Arc, at this time.
In an interview with Variety released on March 22, James Gibbons, President of Warner Bros Discovery’s Asia-Pacific division, revealed that WBD plans on increasing its anime output for 2024 and beyond, saying “We have a Japanese anime studio, which has been producing five or ten anime series per year, over the last few years. [...] We’ve approved expansion to take that to more than ten series per year.” How many of those titles Toonami itself will get to broadcast is yet to be seen, but it's a good sign that WBD remains committed to anime overall.
Tune in tonight for the finale of Demon Slayer’s Entertainment District Arc, among other great moments. Do note that as the season finale of Demon Slayer is 45 minutes long, every show after will air 15 minutes later than usual tonight. Stay gold as always, and Toriyama-san, may you rest in peace in the Other World and thank you for everything. Until we meet again.

What would Vegeta do if Goku never came back to life
His entire life was dedicated to overthrowing and killing Frieza. From a young age he was taught that strength was the only thing that mattered. Power was survival, power was success. Without it, you were as good as dead.
For years he holds strongly to that belief. That he was destined for greatness. But he finds out the hard way on Namek that he is no super saiyan and despite all his years of combat, his rage, his pride, he doesn't even come close to defeating Frieza. He dies broken, humiliated and powerless, a bitter reminder of the years he spent as Frieza's pawn.
And when he wakes up from being revived, what does he see? Goku, a low class warrior, as a super saiyan fighting and actually beating Frieza. At that very moment, that's where his one sided obsessive rivalry begins, because if he could defeat Goku, then he would surpass the saiyan that toppled Frieza. He would finally prove his worth, cast aside the chains of his own inadequacy and restore the pride he had lost. His name would be revered, feared. The legacy of his people would shine once more and he would never again feel the humiliation of being weak ever again.
Goku alone was the sole motivator for Vegeta to ascend to super saiyan and super saiyan two. But no matter how much he tried to catch up, Goku was always one step ahead. So when that one sole motivation dies, it hits him really hard. He doesn't see the point in fighting anymore. Why bother when no one else can give him the satisfaction of that well earned victory he had been chasing his entire life. He's stranded on Earth with no grand ambitions, no rivals to spur him on. Days turn into months, and for about 2 years his life becomes a monotonous blur of just going through the motions.
I'd like to think future Trunks is the very reason Vegeta decides to stay and raise his son. Witnessing the death of his future son when Cell struck him showed how much he had gotten attached. While it was awkward at first and he wasn't the best at it for a good while, Vegeta tries to form some sort of connection. And that connection came through training. I'm watching the Buu saga currently and from the looks of it Trunks holds a high regard for his father, you also at some point see Trunks in the gravity room with Vegeta, and Vegeta doesn't shoo him away, he doesn't disregard his son, he actually shows concern that the gravity might be too much for him and has a conversation with him. Even challenged him to a spar with the promise to take him to the park. Vegeta grows to enjoy being around his son, and because of Trunks, he slowly begins to enjoy living on Earth while also enjoying the company of the others.
Every so often, he'll leave Earth in search of worthy opponents, needing the occasional reminder of what it feels like to test his limits. But his wanderings are never permanent. He always comes back, to Trunks, to the life he'd unwittingly built. That bond became an anchor that kept him grounded.
At least until he hears talk of Gohan entering the tournament. Gohan being the only other saiyan that proved stronger than him at the cell games renews that competitive spark that he hadn't felt in years (mostly of him holding onto that delusion of wanting that victory over Goku even if it's through his son). In the end, the fight with Gohan leaves him satisfied, knowing that this is the closest he'll get to having that rematch with Goku. It was his final step into acceptance of the grief that held onto his heart so tightly.
Overtime Vegeta learns to live with the void Goku left behind. It never truly disappears, but it becomes bearable. He instead channels that energy into mentoring the next generation alongside Piccolo. They become pillars of wisdom and strength, shaping the young fighters who would protect the Earth in the years to come.
