Every year since 2019, Mattel have released a series of Dia de Muertos Barbies. Originally in 2019 this was a single Barbie; from 2021, they also introduced a Ken, and from 2022 they released a Member's Only edition as well.

For 2024, the Barbie and Ken have similar vibes and complementary colour schemes, but are not a direct copy of one another. As in previous years, these were designed by Javier Meabe.

The Mattel Signatures website describes these dolls as "a perfect balance of reverence and tradition", and speaking as a white Australian, I certainly don't know enough to prove or disprove that.

A few standout features; Barbie's orange headband represents marigolds, while Ken is simply described as looking dashing.

Sorry, Ken.

Before I discuss this year's Member's Only Barbie, though, I need to share a story.

These dolls clearly list the designer as "Javier Maebe", but on my posts for previous years I had referred to him as "Javier Meabe". I went back and edited these posts in shame, thinking I had caught myself in a mistake. Imagine my surprise, then, when I saw that the Member's Only doll was a collaboration between Kris Goyri and "Javier Meabe".

He spells his own name on Instagram as Meabe, so I assume this is correct. Mattel has spelled his name wrong on the Barbie and Ken Dia de Muertos dolls.

Kris Goyri collaborates this year on the Member's Only release.

Kris Goyri is a Mexican designer born in Mexico City, whose designs have been worn by model Miranda Kerr and former First Lady of Mexico, Angélica Rivera.

The marigold motif is even more heavily represented on this Barbie; featuring both in her headwear and her gown.
