since I'm out here making public service announcements today, here's another one

you may have seen the post going around about how amazon has pulled the ability to download ebooks for usb transfer from their site. this is yet another way they're trying to ensure you don't own digital goods you pay for and that they can remove your access at any time, either because of licensing issues or just good old fashioned censorship

before diving into what you can do about this, I will state that I do NOT support piracy of books. authors are not rich corporations and losing sales will hurt them. don't put books up on download sites and don't get them from there (your local library can usually provide ebook access if you can't afford to buy them). what I DO support though is owning the things you buy and keeping an offline copy of them that you can access without amazon apps and that amazon can't just delete off your account

fortunately, even after this change, there's a way to get yourself a permanent copy. see the top comment of the post below (the og post is outdated and the comment has the latest which still works correctly)

make sure you read ALL the directions and uninstall stuff, delete stuff, get the right versions, turn off wifi initially, etc. also, if you already had kindle reader on your pc, I would HIGHLY recommend that you deregister it on amazon's site (under devices and content) before trying this or you may find that some books won't work correctly

also please do not store these exclusively in the cloud, like on gdrive or whatever. keep copies on a local computer or server, back it up on a drive or cd if you still have a burner. do not rely on corporations to allow you access to your own files

Backup Your Kindle Books!

Amazon is getting rid of the "download and transfer via usb" option on Feb 26th!

So what this means is you can no longer get hard copy files to your kindle device with this method.

Where to start:

Calibre is a free ebook management software, available on windows, mac, and linux - but also comes in a portable version you can put on a flash drive. Ebooks are very small files, 100s of books can easily take less than 1GB of space.

what is DRM? TLDR: digital rights management (DRM) is meant to prevent piracy, however, this also means you never really own your ebooks. If Amazon decides to take down a book you bought? That's it, it's gone and it doesn't matter that you paid for it.

Removing DRM (extra instructions if needed) If you're on PC and don't have a kindle device, you'll want kindle version 2.4.0 or it won't work in Calibre.

In Calibre, navigate to Preferences > Plugins > Load Plugin From File - DeDRM - Use the latest Beta or Alpha release, follow instructions on the github page

Preferences > Plugins > Get New Plugins

You'll have to restart Calibre once you install so just add them all at once before you restart it.

You can find the folders with your ebooks under documents -> my kindle content, each book will have it's own folder and you're looking for the .azw file. If it says .azw3 double check the pc app version because that format will not work with DeDRM. Download a single book first, drag and drop it into Calibre and double click it to open and test that DeDRM is working properly. You should be to convert all the .azw files to epubs or any other format you want. To do this, either look in the top menu for 'convert books' or right click on the individual file to convert it, you can do this one at a time or select to convert in bulk. If you have 100s or even 1000+ books? focus on getting the files backed up first, once you have the book files you can take your time actually getting them into calibre.

The only media industry that doesn't 100% love DRM is the music industry, and that's because they released digital content without DRM before they realized they might need it. (You might have heard of it - it's called the Compact Disc.)

(I'll put a cut here, this got long.)

People could rip their CDs and make perfect copies. They could share them with their friends, recompress them into MP3s, make mix CDs, whatever. So when the music industry started pushing for digital distribution, they added clunky DRM and the customers went, "Fuck that, it's easier to buy the CD and rip it." They tried to prevent ripping by adding DRM to CDs, with success levels ranging from "didn't work" to "didn't work and got a class-action suit filed against them". Apple (and eventually Microsoft) included CD ripping software with their operating systems.

Meanwhile, Apple had figured out to sell digital music online, and had DRM applied as required. That DRM only worked on iPods, Windows PCs, and Macs. And, since the iPod was by far the most popular MP3 player on the market, that meant that any competing store (Microsoft and Amazon both tried, among others) went absolutely nowhere.

The music industry gave up on DRM because they realized it had locked them to one vendor, because once people were tied to that one vendor they couldn't move without losing all their content, and because most content wasn't DRM-locked in the first place so even they realized it wasn't actually preventing any piracy. Now that streaming is a thing, though, they love DRM again, because DRM protects the streaming business model. But you can't buy DRM-encrusted music anywhere because nobody wants to buy it.

The book and movie/TV industries saw what happened to the music industry and, before they ever sold digital content, required DRM. This may have been very bad DRM (in the case of the CSS encryption on DVDs) but it's enough to trigger the DMCA 'anti-circumvention' provisions. That meant that Apple and Microsoft couldn't include DVD ripping like their CD rippers. There has never been a general legal source of non-DRM digital video content available. Similarly, there has generally never been a legal source of non-DRM digital books from the major publishers.

The book publishers (including audiobooks for stupid reasons) have gotten themselves completely shafted by Amazon, even worse than the music industry was by Apple. But at this point 'Kindle' is basically synonymous with 'ebook' and it's all because of DRM. A few publishers (Tor and Baen, for example) have realized this is a suicide pact for them and release their books without DRM, not that it helps much. But the vast majority of publishers still seem to think DRM is helping them when all it does is lock their users to Amazon even tighter.

It does jack shit to prevent piracy, for what it's worth. At best it prevents non-tech-savvy users from easily sharing an ebook with their friends. But de-DRM tools are common enough that reasonably tech-savvy people can strip the DRM from their books and share them with millions of their closest friends via bittorrent, Mega, etc.

Amazon owns Audible, the monopoly audiobook platform that controls >90% of the audio market. They require mandatory DRM for every book sold, locking those books forever to Amazon’s monopoly platform. If you break up with Amazon, you have to throw away your entire audiobook library.

That’s a hell of a lot of leverage to hand to any company, let alone a rapacious monopoly that ran a program targeting small publishers called “Project Gazelle,” where execs were ordered to attack indie publishers “the way a cheetah would pursue a sickly gazelle”:

We don't know a lot about Natural Reader on the Apple Mobile Devices, and have only looked at or used it a little bit, since we don't have an iPhone or iPad, etc. According to the Natural Reader site page description: "Note: DRM-protected eBooks from iBooks, Kindle, Nook, or Adobe OverDrive cannot be opened with NaturalReader." In general, Android Tablets, SmartPhones, iPhones, iPads, iPods (not the classic) are the best way to read or listen to the electronic versions of our books. Our eBooks eBook reader functionality were tested on the PC, using the MS Word file in MS Word 2013, with the Microsoft David voice, and on the Android using the MS Word File, with the @Voice Aloud Reader app playing the audio using the Google Voice reader, with the English United Kingdom voice, and with the English United States voice. However, we cannot guarantee that our eBooks will work perfectly with any voice, or with any Book Reader, but you should be able to use them on other eBook Readers and devices than what we have tested our eBooks on.
