Episode 17 – Girl Meets Abroad
Josh saw the paper and couldn’t feel anything but shock, he had applied the year before, this was before he and Maya started dating, it was on a whim. He had been pushing himself away from Maya at the time and was trying to give her the chance at having her life. Riley found out and told him he was being an idiot, but at the time he had applied for the program. It was only for a few months but it was supposed to give him the chance to find his footing in his life.
“Crap,” he said out loud, while staring at the acceptance letter. Two-month semester abroad, an intensive course study with little to no breaks, an escape from reality. The program was supposed to be held half in Europe and the other half at the NYU campus. Four classes in total, but how had he forgotten about the application at all.
Of course, the answer to all of his questions was Maya, she had made him forget about everything. They studied together, he sometimes sat in her room while she drew something and he read a book. Sometimes he would read to her while she painted, and although she would deny it to everyone in the world, he knew she liked it. He picked stories that he knew she would enjoy, they had gone through all kinds of novels throughout their relationship and it had been weird at first but after a while she would just lay down next to him on the floor as he read to her.
That’s why this was going to be the hardest decision he would have to make at the moment, because this relationship was still new. Their one-year anniversary was still a month away, and he would be in Europe the day it happened. He sighed as he sat on his bed in his dorm room. He had a single, which was rare as it was, but he had gotten lucky when they had given it to him, even though he rarely spent any time in the room. He worked at Topanga’s, he ate dinner with Maya and her parents, or at his brother’s house.
Not knowing what to do he leaves his room and starts walking towards the park, but he doesn’t stay there, he keeps going watching the lights of the city around him. It was home because he lived there, it was home because his family was near-by, it was home because he had found someone he loved there. He found himself in a park close to his brother’s place, it was almost dark but the park was still open to the public. He always found it weird that the parks were closed after a certain time, but he knew it was because it was New York and all kinds of things happened in the big city.
“You know you could just come upstairs,” Riley said sitting down next to him. Her foot encased in a boot from the skiing trip.
“Why are you out here?” he asked her looking pointedly at her foot.
“Well the snow is gone, and I just wanted to take a walk, the park is close so I wouldn’t have to go very far,” she said smiling at him. “What’s wrong?”
Josh sighed knowing that he couldn’t really keep anything from Riley, “Last year, before Maya and I started dating, during that awkward time before you forced us into admitting our feelings, I applied to this program, it’s competitive, but half of the year is spent in Europe, I think it’s Germany this time, anyway they accepted me.”
“That’s great Josh,” she said to him smiling. “You’re worried aren’t you, about how Maya would react.”
“Among other things,” he said looking at his niece with sadness in his heart. “Is it bad that I still want to go?”
“No, it’s not bad Josh, it’s something good and although I know Maya would be happy for you, she would also be sad. She does care about you very much.”
“I need to talk to her about it,” he said watching the streetlights turn on as the darkness slowly engulfed the street.
“She’ll freak out for like a minute,” Riley says watching kids run home as the lights turned on. “The question is do you think this would change your relationship?”
“Doubtful,” he sighed. “We’re stronger together but it’s still two months apart.”
“But it’s an opportunity you can’t pass up because it will be something that taints your relationship.”
“Why do I have a feeling that this isn’t just about me?”
“It’s not, but in the end, we both have decisions to make about the future, and if our relationships survive after all of that then maybe it will be something special.”
Josh looked at his niece’s face and realized that as much as she loved Lucas there was something under it all that held onto her insecurities. Before it was about whether they were good enough for one another, Maya was a part of that as well as the bullies she had to face the year before. Now it was their future. Riley held onto everything in regards to her own struggles until it all exploded, but when it came to everyone else she fought tooth and nail for them.
“I’m going to go talk to Maya, but Riley whatever you’re thinking stop,” he said looking at her as he got up. “Trust your heart.”
She smiled at him and nodded, “I will as long as you trust yours.”
“Promise.”
He walked her home and then made the short trip to Maya’s apartment. He knew that this was one of a million tests that he had to go through because of his relationship with Maya, if they survived one test they would be stronger together.
Maya was standing in her room thinking about what it would be like to lose her childhood home, if they moved what would it mean especially when she got into college. Or at least if she went to college, she was never sure if she could get into any school but with Riley on the case, not only for her but for all of them, Maya was a little more optimistic. She might never go to a big school like NYU but she had some kind of future ahead of her.
“Hey,” Shawn said as he walked into her room. “So I wanted to talk to you about something.”
“Sure,” she said before sitting on her bed, before patting the mattress for him to sit down next to her. “Talk away.”
Shawn always made her nervous, not in a weird way, just in the he’s now my father please don’t leave us kind of way. She didn’t want to lose her family.
“Well your mom and I’ve been looking at apartments big enough for all of us, but your grandma wants to move to Florida, she keeps saying that she’s retired and we should let her live a little.”
“Yeah well, she’s feisty, and I think she wants to live somewhere that won’t make her arthritis act up,” Maya loved her grandmother and knew that the old woman wanted to really run around causing hell in a warm place.
“Well, we’re letting her go, she’s going to use her social security to go live in Florida, and we’ll send her things if she needs them.”
“Does that mean we’re not moving?” Maya asked hopeful but Shawn looked at her and shook his head.
“We’re still moving, I don’t want you or your mom walking home so late and something were to happen because we live so far from her job. But we did find a place you’d approve of.”
Maya gave him a questioning look, “I don’t know I’m pretty picky.”
“Well it’s in the building next to Riley’s so I think it would be perfect,” he said smiling. “There’s an apartment there, it’s as big as the Matthew’s apartment and we can afford it so we signed the papers today… but if you don’t want to move there we’ll find somewhere else.”
She couldn’t help the smile on her face, she had dreamed of living in a place like Riley’s all of her life. “The baby gets the bay window,” she said automatically.
“Why?” Shawn said.
“Well I’m going to college soon but I want the baby to have a room like Riley’s.”
“What if we have a boy? Would it still be the same kind of place?”
“Please you know mom is going to have a girl,” she said smiling, they weren’t sure. “It doesn’t matter either way as long as they have a safe place.”
“That’s fine with me,” he said hugging her. “Okay, your mom and I are going to plan, and I’ll call when dinner’s ready.”
He left her to her own thoughts, which were only filled with happiness, her family was alright, they were going to grow. She had her friends, her life, and most of all she had Josh. She went back to thinking, not about this room but her new room, the baby’s room, how their furniture would fit in a bigger place. There was an image in her mind for the walls of the nursery, something adorable, because she wanted to leave a present for her sibling.
A knock on the door broke her thought process as the door swung open revealing Josh, standing tall in front of her.
“Hey Maya,” he said as he walked in and she knew automatically that something was on his mind because usually he just walked in and sat down without saying a word especially when she was drawing or painting.
“What’s wrong?” she asked automatically.
“We need to talk about something,” he said and she never realized how much she hated the words we need to talk before. That’s what people said before they broke up with their significant other. “It’s a good thing in a way,” he kept talking even though her mind was going through a million thoughts at once.
“If you’re going to break up with me just get it over with,” she said trying to be the strong fearless person she knew she was even though she could feel her heart breaking.
“Maya,” he said kneeling in front of her. “I’m not breaking up with you.”
“Then why do you want to talk,” she said as her traitorous voice broke.
“I have a school thing,” he started but stopped before he pulled her into a hug. “You have to listen to everything I have to say before you say anything.”
“Okay,” she said wiping a stray tear from her face.
“Okay,” he said before sitting on his feet and looking at her. “Before we started going out I applied to this prestigious program, it’s very competitive but it’s a good experience for a student. I found out this morning that I was accepted into the program.”
“Josh that’s great,” she said but he held up his hand.
“I’m not finished,” he said and she could see a flash of sadness in his eyes. “The program sends students overseas for the first two months of the semester.”
“Oh,” she said looking at him for the first time. He was leaving for two months, which meant he was going to miss their anniversary, his own birthday, which she had been planning a surprise party for. “You want to go,” she whispered.
“Yes,” he said. “We could write to each other every day, we can skype too.”
She thought about it for a moment, she wanted to scream about how unfair it was, but she also knew that he deserved the chance that he was being given.
“As long as you take me to prom,” she said knowing that she needed to let him go but it still hurt just a little bit to let go. “And we go on a trip to see my grandmother in Florida this summer.”
There were tears in his face as he nodded, “We can visit my parents too… are you really okay with this?”
“Not really, but I know that our relationship can only get stronger if we trust each other enough to let the other person do something they really want to do.”
“I trust you more than anything,” he said to her.
“You have to send me post cards every week,” she demanded. “One email a day with a picture of something interesting that you saw,” she tried to keep the tears back because Maya didn’t cry. “And we can skype twice a week.”
“That’s fine with me, but you have to send me updates on which schools you get accepted to,” he said smiling at her. “And pictures of anything you draw when I’m not here.”
“I want you to record a book for me,” she said taking his hand. “Just so it can feel like you’re here reading to me like you normally do.”
“Okay,” he said pulling her close to him. She could feel his heartbeat against her ear.
“Bring me back something they only sell wherever you’re going.”
“I will, and you should learn to make that banana bread from the bakery and send it to me,” he said breathing her in.
“Okay,” she said as she ran her fingers through his hair.
They stayed there holding onto each other until Shawn came in to tell her dinner was ready, Josh stayed for dinner explaining to Shawn what was happening. Shawn in turn gave him a guide book on Germany that he had, with tabs on all kinds of places Josh should check out.
He left two weeks later, Maya waving him off at the airport while Riley held her hand. Josh sent his first email the minute he landed, a picture of himself at the airport and the words I miss you already written on the image. The Hunter family moved into their new apartment the week after, and Maya sent Josh the sketch of what she wanted to paint in the nursery.

Chapter 1: A Friend of Mine
MONDAY
She tossed the thin dark purple cardigan on and listened to Maya rant about the inconvenience of their impromptu reunion. Riley giggled as Maya waved off a euphemism about Farkle and Isadora flying in late that evening. Riley grabbed her keys and shuffled Maya towards the front door. Maya groaned and leaned back into Riley’s arms purposely making it hard for the bubbly brunette to move her.
“Maya,” Riley chastised and the blonde smirked.
“Oh come on Riles, do we really need to go get party supplies? It's just us six!” Maya groaned.
“Maya it's been a year since all six of us were together! Aren’t you excited to see our friends?” Riley pouted.
“Yeah, I guess,” Maya said and rolled her eyes.
Riley knew it was a front, and that Maya was just as excited as she was. Despite being close the clique six had spread out across the continent for college. Maya and Riley stayed true, and both got into NYU. While Riley went to Steinhardt for English Education, Maya found her calling at Tisch for Collaborative Art. Although in different programs, they became roommates in a cramped two-bedroom, a gift from their parents. Their friendship never wavered and if anything it got stronger over the last few years. As their junior year ended they wanted to celebrate with their best friends. In just mere months they would be college seniors, and then off to more school or careers.
“Farkle got us a suite,” Riley teased and Maya grinned.
“A suite? Okay, Minkus, guess that business degree is working after all,” Maya mused and stood up straight.
As the girls found their place at NYU, Farkle and Isadora found their place at Stanford University. Although Princeton University was their goal, they both realized the move across the country would do them good. It was no surprise that both of them had done well successfully that they were graduating before their friends. Farkle in the fall will be attending Stanford Graduate School of Business and Isadora will start her Ph.D. program in Neuroscience. Another reason for their motley crew of friends to come together.
“It's more like a graduation gift from his parents,” Riley said and led Maya out of their apartment.
“I can't believe those two geniuses are already going to their second degrees, I barely think I am going to make it out of my bachelor’s,” Maya groaned as Riley locked the door.
The two linked their arms together and Riley giggled.
“Maya you're doing great in school, As and Bs,” Riley exclaimed.
“It's only because I am actually interested in school now, why couldn't we just jump to college?” Maya asked as they walked down the stairs.
“That's not how life works,” Riley said as they left the apartment building.
Loud city noises blare down the streets and the crowds shuffled through masses of New Yorkers. Both girls leaped into the mass and followed the flow down the street.
“I hope Party City isn't crowded,” Maya said as Riley smiled brightly.
A benefit of having an apartment in Union Square was that everything was close by to them. They could pop in, get some supplies and grab lunch all within walking distance.
“I doubt it, no major holidays, just some graduations in a few weeks,” Riley said.
“So … we talked about Smarkle, is there a particular someone you would like to talk about before we see them?” Maya teased.
“Zay? I heard he might double major,” Riley shrugged.
“What is he? Can he?” Maya asked as Riley nodded.
“I mean he is a dance major, maybe he wants to do something in that field but more,” Riley said.
“Sounds like a lot,” Maya mused.
“I know but it's Zay, and Duke is letting him do it, why not take advantage?” Riley said
Zay’s college choice was a surprise to all of them. They knew Zay was eclectic and loved to do different things, but they all assumed he would go back to Texas. He threw them for a loop when he decided to go to Duke University in North Carolina for Dance. They knew he liked ballet but didn't think he would take it on as a major.
“Wait! You deflected! You know who I was talking about Riles. A certain cowboy down in Texas,” Maya teased.
Lucas.
Lucas’s choice was no surprise to Riley, she knew what he was interested in since they were in the seventh grade. So when he announced he was going to Texas A&M Riley was excited for him no matter what. They decided it was in their best interest to break up and stay as friends. Allowing one another to explore these new waters without being weighed down by a significant other. However, it didn't matter to Riley as she never found anyone to match Lucas on any level. Sure she went on dates and flirted around, but nothing was serious. No one was able to make her feel like he did.
“Lucas?” Riley asked.
“You said Huckleberry’s name, that's a big step for you,” Maya said with a grin.
“I always say his name, it's you who insist on these nicknames, Maya we’re twenty-one now. Don't you think it would be a good time to drop the nicknames?” Riley asked.
“What and miss out on annoying moral compass, do you know me Riles?” Maya fake gasped and Riley chuckled.
“Yes I do, and to answer your question, there’s nothing to talk about, Lucas and I are friends, with the exception of Smarkle, we are all friends,” Riley said and directed Maya into Party City.
“You two were always more than just friends,” Maya said as Riley dragged her towards balloons.
“Why are we getting party supplies again?” Maya groaned.
“Well while we are just becoming seniors, Farkle and Izzy are graduating. I thought it would be nice to have something like a little congratulations thing during our reunion,” Riley said as she perused gold and silver balloons.
“Do we have to get gifts?” Maya asked.
“I’m getting them cards, and I got them each something small, just a congrats thing. You don't have to, you know how I feel about gift-giving,” Riley said with a smile.
“You love it you fruit loop, I guess I’ll look for something here,” Maya sighed and followed Riley down the aisles.
As the girls scoured the store for supplies, they kept the conversation light about their friends. Catching one another up on information to prepare for the annual reunion. Maya laughed as she picked up small party favors and found two keychains for her friends.
“Look one for each of them, the dollar sign for Farkle, and the brain for Izzy,” Maya said as she jingled them.
Riley playfully rolled her eyes and smiled at her best friend. However, she knew the two would love Maya’s gift and treasure it because that is what friends do.
“I have a special order to pick up,” Riley said as she walked towards the counter.
“Special? Oh, Riles, what did you do?” Maya asked as Riley talked to the cashier.
Riley emptied her basket of balloons, candy, and streamers. She smiled as the cashier revealed a bag with Stanford University decorations.
“Of course,” Maya said.
“It's going to be so much fun,” Riley said as the cashier rang up her things.
“Fruit Loop, look I am going to the other cashier to pay for this, don't get any more supplies,” Maya chastised as she walked away.
Riley playfully rolled her eyes once more and smiled as the Cashier scanned the items. Riley’s eyes caught a glimmer of gold and she saw a gaudy gold plastic necklace with a horseshoe. She bit her bottom lip in complementation and took the plunge.
“Could I get that too?” Riley said as she pointed to the necklace.
The cashier rang it up and gave her the total. Riley swiped her card with no hesitation and smiled as she was handed the bags. Maya had sauntered over with her small bag and raised her eyebrows.
“Got everything?” Maya asked as Riley nodded.
Riley sat at her desk as she edited her final paper for class. One click and she would officially be done with her junior year. However, she couldn't stop herself from continuously changing the ending. Something felt off, and she didn't know what it was. She glanced at the clock and saw it was well past 11:00 PM, and she was exhausted. She rubbed her eyes and stifled a yawn.
Her phone vibrated and she glanced at it. It was a text but who it was, surprised her. She didn't know why he would text her so late but he had to have a reason. Sure they chatted outside the group chat but it was mundane, and not so late.
Lucas: Hey you up?
Riley: Unfortunately, is everything ok?
Lucas: Yeah can I call?
Riley hesitated but ultimately confirmed that he could. Before she knew it, her phone was ringing in her hands. As she took a deep breath she picked up the call.
“Hey,” She whispered.
“Hey,” Lucas responded.
“Hey,” She repeated.
“I thought we grew out of that,” He chuckled.
“I thought so too,” Riley said as she leaned back in her seat.
“Sorry to call so late it's almost midnight over there right?” He asked.
“Yeah but it's fine I was up, I was working on my final paper,” Riley said as she scrolled through the document.
“Riley Matthews hasn’t finished her homework, oh no the world is ending,” He joked.
“Oh stop it, I have till tomorrow midnight to submit it but I wanted it done before … the reunion,” Riley said.
“That's the Riley I know, am I interrupting? Do you want to finish it?” Lucas asked as he cleared his throat.
Riley paused and leaned back in her chair. A part of her did want to finish the paper, but the other part of her wanted to know why he called, especially this late.
“I think my brain is fried, I know something is wrong, I just can't put my finger on it, I can talk. What's up?” Riley said as she tried to make her voice sound light.
“I kind of wanted to hear your voice,” Lucas said, his voice deepening.
“My voice?” Riley questioned.
“Yeah … I just needed to hear it. Talking to you has always been easy Riley, and I thought I would call one of my best friends,” Lucas said.
Riley could tell something was wrong, but just like her paper, she couldn't put her finger on it. She twirled some hair around her finger and listened to him.
“What did you want to talk about? Tomorrow?” Riley asked.
“I’m excited to come home,” Lucas said and Riley could feel her heart race slightly.
“Texas isn't home?” Riley asked.
“No it isn't, not when everything I love is back in New York,” Lucas said
“Like your friends,” Riley said.
“Yeah but a particular one in mind. Plus I wouldn't feel so lost, and I think … I need to be found” Lucas said his voice lofty and Riley bit her lip.
“Are you okay Lucas, you sound … off,” Riley asked as he chuckled.
“You definitely know me the best, yeah I’m good, I had a drink and I think … it's getting to me. Don't mind me, I’m sorry for interrupting. Goodnight Riley,” Lucas said and hung up the call before Riley could say anything.
Riley looked at the phone puzzled at what just happened. She thought about waking Maya but she decided against it. Instead, she crafted a long but well-intended text to the Texan. She needed him to know she wasn't judging him and that she was there for him.
Riley: Hey, you sounded off. I know you said you drank but, it didn't seem like that was what was going on? You know you can talk to me always if you want to call back we can talk about what's bothering you. I hope you're okay Lucas, I’m always here for you.
Riley sent the message and returned to her paper. She glanced at her phone every few seconds and waited to hear it vibrate back but it didn't. She sighed and started to type up her conclusion, so she could finally finish her paper. As she saved the document and uploaded it to her college portal, she checked her phone. Still nothing. As she submitted the paper, she got up from her seat and went to the bathroom to do her bedtime routine.
Lucas crossed her mind with each task, and she wondered if tomorrow it would be easier to talk. She hoped all was alright, and she wished he would have told her what's wrong. As she finished her routine she bounded for her room. She flicked her light off and crawled into bed exhausted from the day. She grabbed her phone to plug it in to charge when she saw a new alert. She swiped through to see a response from Lucas.
Lucas: I love you.

Valentine’s Day- Joshaya Fanfic Chapter 1
Josh woke up suddenly with the familiar ringing of his alarm reverberating in his subconscious. It took him a couple of seconds however to notice that the song that usually woke him up- "It's a beautiful day," by U2 was NOT what was ringing in his ears. It was an obnoxiously loud and terribly sung birthday song. The tone was off-key and the voice sounded like one of those munchkin videos. Who the hell was singing like that?
He sat up on his bed and spun around towards the direction of the singing to notice none other than his college best friend, Andrew Watkins. Andrew was excitedly jumping up and down in the middle of Josh's dorm room as he bellowed out the birthday song at the top of his lungs and threw a bunch of confetti in the air, thereby littering Josh's impeccably clean dorm room. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAREST JOSHIEEEE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOUUUU! YAYYYY!"
"HOLY CRAP! ENOUGH DREW!" Josh yelled as he felt his ear drums close to bursting from his friend's terrible voice. "I got it. It's my birthday. Please, if you care about me, just stop!"
"HOW OLD ARE YOU NOW?! HOW OLD ARE YOU NOW?!" Andrew continued singing even more loudly.
"OH MY GOD, DREW! IM GOING TO KILL YOU NOW!" Josh leapt off his bed and charged towards Andrew, ready to pummel him.
"OK! OK! I'M DONE!" Andrew held up his hands in surrender, and backed off from a clearly annoyed (and still sleepy) Josh. "Dude, chill. It's your birthday. Why would you want to start off with the murder of your adorable friend?" Andrew gave him a wide, toothy grin.
Josh just shook his head in disbelief at his friend's antics and took a look at his room which was now all covered in pink confetti. "Holy crap. Dude, you cleaning this up right?" Josh felt he was going to have a heart attack. He wasn't necessarily a neat freak but he had just spent a good part of his Saturday a few days ago cleaning up his room. And now, all of his hard work had been completely destroyed.
"Dude, nah, I can't, I got an exam in like two minutes. I shouldn't have even come here." Andrew responded as he checked the time on his phone and dropped something that looked like a cake box on Josh's desk. "This is from Jas." He said, pointing to the cake. "She said it's your favorite. Although, I didn't know you had a favorite cake? You like never eat cake. You eat veggies like all the time. When did you and Jas talk about this?"
"Dude, so you're seriously not cleaning this up?" Josh glared at Andrew in disbelief.
"Noo-ppe. Love you though man. Happy birthday! Jas and I will see you for lunch? We're treating you. Sounds good?"
Josh didn't respond. He kept staring at Andrew with a sour look on his face, and already thinking of ways to get revenge on his friend for trashing his room on his birthday of all days and just running off.
"O...kay. Silence means consent. Lunch it is! See you later, bud. Bye!" Andrew quickly ran off, sensing from the look on Josh's face that he had sufficiently angered the birthday boy.
Josh ran his hand through his hair and sighed loudly in frustration. "I'm going to kill him." He muttered to himself as he glanced around at his room once more. His attention finally settled on the cake on his desk. With a slight smile on his face, he walked towards it and opened the box, curious to see if Jasmine, Andrew's current girlfriend and Josh's friend as well, had really remembered his favorite cake flavor. He couldn't even remember having that conversation with her. He opened it up to see a scrumptious red velvet cake and his smile grew even wider. He would make sure to say a big thank you to Jasmine, after he killed her boyfriend.
He picked up the cake and was about to put it in his little dorm fridge when he heard his phone ringing. Quickly setting the cake down, he rushed to his bed and fumbled through his bed covers until he found his phone buried underneath. Glancing at the caller ID, he felt his smile grow a thousand times wider and his heart skip a beat as he quickly answered the phone. "Maya?" He whispered her name softly.
"BOING!" Maya responded enthusiastically. Josh grinned from ear to ear at the sound of her voice. He could almost picture the look of pure happiness on her face as she yelled out her favorite nickname for him, and he couldn't help but feel his heart expanding with euphoria.
"Boy, aren't you cheery this morning. To what do I owe this awfully excited and sugary cheery Maya?" He teased lightly.
"To your BIRTHDAY, you old man you!" Maya exclaimed and immediately commenced to sing the birthday song. Josh almost dropped the phone in shock as he listened to her angelic rendition of the song which his best friend had butchered just a few minutes before. He had heard of Maya being a good singer but he had never actually heard her sing by herself. The rare occasions in the past that he had witnessed her singing was during Matthews Christmas family gatherings. But even then, they were all singing traditional carols together as a group so he hadn't noticed anything particularly special about the beautiful blonde's voice...until now. My God, I could listen to this all day, he thought dreamily to himself as he felt himself completely entranced the more Maya sang.
"Happy birthday Josh! Wishing you lots of happiness today!" Maya exclaimed joyfully after she finished singing. Josh was literally tingling with euphoria as Maya's voice still echoed in his ears. He laid down on his bed, pressed the phone gently to his ear, and took a few seconds to consider his next words before he spoke.
"First of, my God, Maya, you have an amazing voice. I mean, I'm speechless right now. I'm pretty sure that was the best birthday song that I've ever heard in my 18 years of life. Please don't tell my parents or Cory that. Especially, Cory. He might be devastated." Maya burst out laughing at this comment, the sound of which filled him with a soothing warmth. That's another sound that I could listen to all day, he thought to himself. "Secondly, thanks for calling. You've definitely made my day after it was almost ruined by my soon to be ex-best-friend."
"Oh no! What did Andrew do?"
"Oh you know- woke me up with a birthday song that wanted me to kill him and then also kill myself and scattered my entire room with pink confetti- which by the way- he's not cleaning up. So yeah, I was pretty pissed before your call."
"Shoot! Why didn't I think of that?" Maya exclaimed amidst laughter.
"Uh no. You would have been on my naughty list if you had done that. You're on my good list now. Don't ruin it kiddo."
"Yes sir! Anywho what are your plans today birthday boy?"
"Hmmm," Josh thought as he took a quick look at the time- 9:30am. He had to go to class in an hour. Maya had called him at the perfect time. And then it hit him. Why was she calling at that time? Didn't she have school? It was a Wednesday morning.
"Hold on. As much as I'm enjoying this convo, don't you have school right now? How are you able to talk on the phone?"
There was a short pause where Josh could almost hear the wheels in her head turning trying to come up with a credible excuse for why she wasn't sitting in a classroom in that moment.
"Um, well I AM in school." She finally spoke. "Just not in a classroom..."
Josh burst out laughing, already anticipating where this was going.
"So you're cutting class- to call me." He responded, shaking his head slightly. It was classic Maya.
"Well, not exactly," Maya responded. "I might have asked your brother if I could go to the bathroom and I kinda haven't returned yet. It's been ten minutes now I think? I should probably get going before Riles organizes a search party to come looking for me." This comment made Josh burst again into laughter as he imagined his niece recruiting a search party which would probably comprise of Lucas, Zay, Farkle and Smackle- their friend group- roaming through the halls of Abigail Adams high school looking for Maya who was probably hiding in a bathroom stall. He laughed so hard he started to feel tears at the corner of his eyes.
"This is hilarious." He responded as he wiped the tears off. "Yeah you should probably get going because my adorable- but slightly overprotective niece- will definitely do that. She kinda takes after her father don't you think?"
"Oh my God, they're practically twins!" Maya quickly agreed as Josh smiled warmly. He absolutely adored his family and was even more grateful that Maya was practically a part of it. One of his favorite conversation topics with her whenever they ran into each other at family gatherings was poking fun at his family's crazy antics.
"Alright, Maya, I'm going to let you go before you get caught. Thanks again for calling."
"Wait, not so fast!" She yelled. "You still haven't told me your plans! It is Valentine's Day after all, and your birthday. I assume you are busy?"
Josh grinned- not exactly sure where she was going with this. Was she trying to ask him out? He decided to entertain her for now by giving her the details of his day as he currently had planned.
"Well no. I'm actually not too busy today. I have class, a lunch with Andrew and Jasmine- though that might probably turn into a funeral so stay tuned-" he heard Maya giggling at this, which made him feel warm inside- "and then more class, and that's about it. I got lots of homework to catch up on though. But in terms of birthday stuff- I'm coming over to Cor's on Saturday for dinner. I assume you will be there?"
"Um yeah duh. I practically live there." Josh laughed.
"Good point."
"So what I'm hearing is that Boing Matthews doesn't have a romantic dinner date planned on this beautiful day of luvvv?"
Josh chuckled- sensing exactly where the conversation was going. "Um no, I do not actually. Shocking, I know. Not sure what it is about NYU girls- I seem to be invisible to them apparently." That last part was a lie. Since starting his Freshman year of college, he had probably been asked out like 3 times which made him quickly realize that girls were a lot bolder in college than they were in high school where the norm was to wait for the guy to make the first move. One girl- Emily- he had actually gone on a date with. She was in his Spanish class, the first semester, a pretty blonde from Canada. They had shared a love of Spanish language and culture. One of Josh's dreams was to study abroad in Spain at some point in his college career. One date with Emily though was enough for him to realize that they would be better off as friends, so he quickly made sure things didn't progress any further.
And then came the weekend he would never forget, just over a month ago, when he accompanied Cory's class as a chaperone to their annual ski trip and ended up finally admitting (and accepting) his growing feelings for his niece's best friend. His affection for Maya had slowly developed over the years with every encounter he had shared with her. He wasn't sure when that affection evolved into something more but it probably started after she barged into NYU last Spring and started spilling her feelings out to Josh, Andrew, Jasmine and Charlotte during their small hangout party.
After that moment, Josh never forgot the intensity of Maya's gaze, the conviction with which she declared her feelings for him and the reasons she felt that way. His heart was racing as he listened in shock to every observation that Maya made about him. He couldn't believe that she had been paying that much attention to him- that she found him so worthy of her attention despite everything that was going on in her life.
When Maya was done speaking, it immediately occurred to him that he had never met a girl like her before- fearless, persistent, and extremely protective of those she cared about. In that moment, he was no longer able to dismiss Maya's feelings as an adolescent crush. They were genuine- he could feel them. Maya was a lot more mature than he had given her credit for and he couldn't help but be speechless as he gazed at her in silent awe. He had promised Maya at the end of that encounter that he would start seeing her differently. And he had kept that promise, especially in the quiet moments when her gaze, her mischievous smile and her words would invade his daydreams. I like you Josh. I'm in it for the long game. For a whole summer last year, she was all he could think about. And even though he was still bothered by her age, he could feel his walls getting weaker until they completely crumbled near the warm fireplace at the ski lodge when she gazed at him with utter adoration and declared yet again with utmost confidence- "I like you, Josh. It's you I like." He couldn't deny the effect she had on him anymore- his rapidly beating heart, the butterflies in his stomach, the elation on his face when he realized that she still liked him, and definitely not the cowboy.
Long story short, they were now playing the long game. Friends, until they could be something more at the appropriate time. And so far, he was satisfied with the way their relationship was progressing in their one month of playing the long game- frequent texts, occasional calls and of course the goofing off and flirtation whenever he would stop by the Matthews to do his laundry. There was a small part of him however that worried that Maya would be so focused on the long game and on someday that she would miss out on her high school experience. Zay raised this concern when he had first visited the Matthews after the ski lodge trip, and it had bothered him ever since.
As far as he knew, Maya was quite innocent when it came to relationships. She had never dated before and Josh was her first serious love interest. As much as Josh hated to think about it, he didn't want Maya shutting herself off from the possibility of other relationships or interests because of him. After all, who knew if he was the right person for her? Anything could happen in the future. He didn't want Maya putting her life on hold for a future that was far from certain. But he also couldn't imagine a future without her in it, and if she did seriously pursue other love interests, then perhaps someday might never be...
Needless to say, he felt conflicted about whether he had been selfish in promising her a someday and a long game which sounded nice in theory but in practice was probably extremely confusing and complicated for a 15 year old girl in high school. Was he ultimately hurting Maya, especially if they continued to grow closer and things didn't work out the way they both desired? It was a question that lurked in the back of his mind and haunted him in the moments when he felt their bond growing stronger- like now, on the phone, laughing and flirting with each other, neither one particularly ready to let the other go although they were both running out of time.

Lucaya - Ship It
1,2 and 3
What made you ship it?
A mixture between the construction of the Maya character, the lack of construction of the Lucas character, but mostly, the chemistry between Sabrina Carpenter and Peyton Meyer
What are your favorite things about the ship?
- Chemistry: just look at them banter.
- Compatibility: The reckless of Maya fits perfectly with the new responsibility of Lucas after he was kicked out of school.
- The mutual protection of each other: Maya protects him from going Texas again, Lucas protects her from herself and her own ways of demolishing herself.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
Not really, I think we all agree the writers fuck us when they decided to go with Rucas and Joshaya, and how Lucas and Maya should have been endgame (Which was kinda implied in the chapter where Maya and Riley meet each other in the future, you know, where Maya wears a plaid shirt and Riley is wearing a turtleneck) but still, 2021, still angry at those fuckers.

The Cinderella Promise (RUCAS AU) - Chapter 0.5
Riley Matthews went to Las Vegas for her best friend and her Uncle’s joint Bachelor/Bachelorette party, but fearing that she would never find happiness she hides out in the hotel bar drinking away her sorrows. While there she meets a handsome stranger with a proposition that would change her life.
Billionaire Businessman Lucas Friar went to Vegas for a business meeting, but after being denied the CEO position at his family’s company, for being known as a player/heart-breaker, he comes up with a plan to win them over if only he finds the perfect “wife” to play the part.
One year was all he asked for, once the clock strikes twelve on their one-year anniversary they would go their separate ways.
But what happens with they start to fall for one another?
A/N - This is the set up to the story, although the story as a whole is a RUCAS fanfic, Joshaya plays a role in how things started, so of course I wanted to write a beginning for them.
Chapter 0.5 – Maya and Josh’s Story
Maya could always remember the first time she met her best friend’s Uncle, the memory was imprinted on her mind because it was at that moment when she knew the he was going to change her life. They were seven years old at the time, they were camping out in Riley’s living room watching cartoons after a sleepover when Riley’s grandparents walked in with this brown hair little boy who smiled when he walked through the door and brought the earth to a standstill. At seven she thought it was just a childhood crush, as she watched him jump on top of Riley, as he picked up his nephew and made baby faces at the newborn. His parents were there to tell them that they were moving to the city, his father had been offered the chance at making his outdoor goods store into a franchise and they decided to move to New York because they would be closer to their children, and grandchildren. Josh would be starting at their school that fall, he was nine at the time and he wasn’t happy about losing his friends but he loved his older brother so he was alright with the move as long as he got to see him more often.
Maya never told him that she liked him when she was only seven, at the time he thought kissing girls was gross, and would often throw worms in their hair laughing about it as he ran away from them. Josh lived down the street from Riley on the same block of brownstones, his room had a bay window just like his best friend but his window wasn’t purple with butterflies, it was blue and white and filled with his skateboard or whatever he threw on there when he got home. She knew this because they would go home together the three of them and Josh would invite them over only to make them watch horror movies. He didn’t know those were her favorite kind of movies but she tried to act like Riley who normally hid under his bed right after the first jump scare, but instead she would snuggle up close to him trying to act disinterested and scared.
Maya remembered the first time she confessed her feelings to him, she was thirteen and it was raining outside as they were walking home. Riley had stayed behind helping her father while Josh walked her home. They were under the awing of a nearby store waiting out the downpour, it was the first day of summer and school would be over in a week, but it was scorching hot outside and the rain was making her hair stand on end. Josh was smiling because he loved running, he was on the track team at the high school but he often went to the middle school to visit his brother. They barely saw one another since he moved up to high school but she liked it when she saw him because it just made the feeling sweeter. He had looked down at her, she was soaked from the rain, and smiled and she blurted out the feeling she had been holding in since she was seven years old.
“Josh I like you,” she said hopeful.
He had smiled, “I like you too kiddo.”
She knew he meant that he liked her because she was Riley’s best friend but at that moment Maya knew that she needed to say what she really felt, but instead of saying the words again she stood on her toes and kissed him on the lips.
“That how I like you Josh,” she said before running away. She didn’t look back to see what his face looked like, she just kept running. Even after all of those years she would remember the day she first told him her feelings and how she gave him her first kiss. Whenever a thunderstorm comes to the city and the rain pours down on the heated cement she remembers that moment.
When she started High School the next year, it would be the first time she looked at Josh since that day. He hadn’t said anything to Riley about it and neither did she, it was a fleeting moment in time and she didn’t know if it had meant as much to him as it did to her. At that moment she was a freshman, and he was a junior, they were on opposite ends of the social ladder, and they hadn’t spoken to one another in a whole year. She stopped going to Matthews family holidays because she didn’t want him to reject her, and when she did go to their house she would hide every time he walked in through the door. She was brave all of the time but when it came to Josh she would cower under Riley’s bed, or in his closet. Riley had figured out that something was up but like the friend she was she helped Maya every time, until the day before school started when she said she wasn’t going to be her buffer anymore. Her best friend wanted her to grab on to her feelings and do something about the girlhood crush that had followed her into her teen years.
It was that first day of high school, when she was dressed in black skinny jeans and a yellow top where Josh had called her his sunshine. He had pulled her away from a smiling Riley after school and dragged her to a nearby park. To him she looked like the sun, with her halo of soft blonde curls and her beautiful smile. He hadn’t been able to get her out of his head since that rainy summer day but every time he tried to talk to her about it she wasn’t around. He had liked her since they first met, but because he had been a stupid boy he reacted the only way he could, he called her names and told her about cooties. He liked when she would cling to him during a horror movie but noticed that she was into the movie as much as he was. She had been trying to act like a scared little girl, but he knew better it was the reason they always watched horror movies even though his niece didn’t like them. He wanted those stolen moments with Maya even if it traumatized his niece.
The park was across the street from his sister-in-law’s bakery so that if everything went wrong he would be able to confide in his family about his heartbreak. At sixteen he had already known that Maya was to him what Topanga was to his brother Cory, but telling her was harder for him than he thought. He didn’t want her to stay away from him and he would do anything to see her even when she was hiding from him under Riley’s bed.
“Maya,” he said but the words were lost to him. He had rehearsed this moment in his mind every day since she had kissed him but at that moment he didn’t know what to say.
“Josh,” she said looking up at him. He knew that he could drown in her blue eyes, as though they were the ocean slowly drowning him, she took his breath away.
“Okay I need to say this and I don’t know if I can get the words out, or even if they did come out if they were the right words to say,” he started babbling. “Last year you told me you liked me, you kissed me and afterwards you left me without letting me say a word. At the time I was still a stupid boy, because I held back. I didn’t know if you were ready for these feelings so of course I treated you with kid gloves even though I wanted to tell you the truth. And I know we’re still kids but my brother always told me that I would find my soul mate, my Topanga, and I would know that I shouldn’t let her go.”
Maya took a deep breath and looked up at him, “Josh what are you trying to say?”
“I’m trying to say that I’ve liked you, ever since we were just little kids chasing each other in the park, while I threw worms at you because I let me friends tell me that girls were gross. I’ve liked you since we watched horror movies in my room and I knew you liked them as much as I did but I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want you to let go of my arm, even though Riley hated every moment of the movie and I knew we were supposed to watch Disney movies but I didn’t do as I was told.”
Maya had looked at him that day as though the world had opened its doors to the possibility of them being together but Josh wanted forever with her even when he was just sixteen years old. Instead of letting her say anything he pulled her close and kissed her lips, relishing in the tenderness of the moment in a way that he hadn’t been able too when she had kissed him and ran away right after. It was a moment that he wanted to remember, she had been his first crush, his first kiss, his first moment under the bright sun that was Maya Hart.
That moment led to a million others for the two of them, they fought, and cried, they kissed and made up, they were stuck to each other from that moment forwards so many years later, at her college graduation he knew that the best present for all of her accomplishments would be the gift of himself. He proposed to her at that moment, her hair shining in the sun as the black cap and gown covered her up and she fanned herself in the summer heat. They walked together towards the graduation party at Topanga’s but were stuck when the sky opened up and poured water on their heads. Underneath the same awing where she had first kissed him and confessed her feelings, he got down on one knee and smiled up at the woman she had become, and the man he hoped he would be for her. At twenty-two, and twenty-four, with the whole world in front of them Josh proposed to the girl who had been a part of his life since he was a child. She had his heart from the first moment they had met and he didn’t want to let her go.
Although they wouldn’t get married for another couple of years they worked hard to create a life for each other. Josh went on to get his master’s degree in Engineering, Maya worked on her master’s in Art History, she worked in a gallery, he worked for the city. They lived in the apartment above the place where they had their first kiss, where he had proposed, only because he wanted their moments in the sun to be where everything first started.
Now she was twenty-six and he was twenty-eight, and he said to her that they should get married now because their lives had finally settled down, they were both in a good place with their careers, and Josh had his alone time with the woman he loved but he wanted a family with her now. So they planned their wedding and their joint bachelor and bachelorette parties, they wanted to have fun for one weekend before they walked down the aisle the next weekend. They were going to have another moment under the sunny sky that had brought them towards one another and the rain clouds that had sealed the deal. They wanted it to rain on their wedding day, because it would mean that the most important moments in their relationship were brought in with a thunderous cloud and wiped away any hardships they had faced before they moved closer together. It was their blessing because although many would say that Maya was the night for him she was the sun and the ocean, warming him every day, and surrounding his heart from every side.

Chapter 2 Girl Meets Shattered
3 Years Later
"I believe that two people are connected at the heart, and it doesn't matter what you do, or who you are or where you live; there are no boundaries or barriers if two people are destined to be together" - Julia Roberts
Riley sat at the counter of her Mother's café and scribbled feverously in her notebook.
"Cake?"
Riley looked up and saw Zay standing in front of her with a slice of chocolate cake. Zay grinned and placed the small dish in front of her notebook. She smiled softly and stuck her finger in the chocolate mousse. Riley brought her finger to her lips and moaned at the taste of the sugar.
"Zay you are awesome! I am glad my Mom gave you this job" Riley commented as Zay passed her a small silver fork.
Zay had scored a job at Topanga's a year ago as a Waiter and it has helped him keep everything on track. Riley wasn't surprised that Zay was good at his job, he loves the people and they love him. Between serving the guest and snacking, he made everyone feel important. He was no longer Robin Lunch; he was Zay Best Waiter Ever.
"Well it does help that you are one of my best friends," Zay said as he took a bite of her cake.
"Zay!" Riley scolded with a laugh.
"Quality assurance" Zay mumbled with his mouth full.
"And?" Riley said as he took another bite.
"It's ok" He joked and Riley let out a laugh.
"Zay Man!" Riley turned around to see Maya walking with a messenger bag.
"No love for me Peaches," Riley said, taking a bite of her cake.
"Well that depends on you Honey, did you finish the next chapter?" Maya asked.
Riley smiled triumphantly and pulled out her iPad and notebook. Maya grinned and snatched the two out of her hands.
"Riles! You've been holding out on me! Now I can draw Violet and Peaches, I've been lacking some great art time" Maya cooed and flipped through the pages.
"I still can't believe you two are creating a graphic novel," Zay said as he took the last bite of cake and grabbed the plate.
Riley tilted her head in disbelief of Zay eating her snack and let out a chuckle. Yet he was right who knew that Riley Matthews could write so well. It was well known Maya had amazing artistic abilities, but one day Farkle and Maya read a short story that Riley wrote. They couldn't believe that Riley had a way to convey her emotions onto paper.
So junior year Riley and Maya began writing a series called Violet and Peaches. The series was about two best friends that fought crimes and had the ability to turn into cats. It was a silly idea, but anything could be possible in their world.
Their little crew actually would have weekly meet-ups and read the adventures and discuss what they believe should happen next. Maya would sketch the new ideas and Riley would write it all down. Farkle has even suggested that they submit it to publishing companies to get offers. However, Riley declines every time while Maya boasts about being the next great graphic designer.
"Believe it, Zay!" Maya said and stopped at a page.
"Riles this is it, this is Violet and Peaches next adventure, I love it," Maya said and a bright smile graced her face,
"Thanks," Riley said and shrugged.
"No drawing Maya we have to head to the Homecoming Game!" Zay said as Maya pulled out her sketchbook.
"Do we have to?" Maya whined and frowned.
"Of course Riley here is our homecoming queen nominee," Zay said and threw his apron onto the countertop.
"Zay you have to lock up," Topanga said as she came from behind.
"But Mrs. M, the game, Riley, Cheerleaders!" Zay rambled and widened his eyes.
"Mom, I got it," Riley said and walked behind the counter.
"Riley aren't you supposed to be at the game to walk across and everything?" Topanga asked.
"I'll be a few minutes late it's fine, really besides, we are closing in twenty minutes, guys go have fun, it gives me private Riley writing time," Riley said and placed her hands under her chin.
"Riles, you sure?" Maya asked as she stood from her seat.
"Totally fine Peaches!" Riley said and grinned.
"Zay!"
Riley's grin faltered from her face when she heard the familiar voice. A voice that she didn't hear often, yet it still sent waves throughout her body. She looked down at the grain of the counter before she felt his presence nearby. He didn't acknowledge her or greet her, but he did glance at her.
"Lucas dude what are you doing here?" Zay asked as Maya glanced between Riley and Lucas.
"Dude you said we were meeting up at four-thirty, it's almost five" Lucas laughed as Zay patted his arm.
"Sorry late shift today, but come on we are all going to the game now," Zay said as Maya grabbed Riley's hand.
"Coming Maya?" Lucas asked as he turned to the Blonde.
"Yeah, Huckleberry" Maya retorted before giving Riley a squeeze.
The three began walking towards the door as Topanga followed slowly behind them. In a silent walk towards the subway, the three of them did not say anything. It could have been the awkward tension or the fact that Riley's mother was a few feet behind them.
"What the Princess isn't joining?" Lucas asked and rolled his eyes.
"Lucas!" Maya scolded and pinched his arm.
Maya didn't want Lucas bashing Riley especially in front of her own mother. Lucas wasn't surprised at Maya's actions; however, he was surprised at her using his name. He didn't make it easy for his friends to spend time with him whenever Riley tagged along.
Somehow he would end up canceling or make Riley feel uncomfortable that she would leave. It was like a switch came on inside of him that made him have to hurt her feelings. Maya had every right to be protective, but he just could not help himself.
"Sorry, Maya I guess I forget you have to protect the Princess" Lucas said and let out a chuckle.
Maya rolled her eyes and shoved him into Zay which made them fall on the ground. Topanga came over and Maya pulled her away from the two boys. Zay jostled Lucas off of him and stood up.
"Why Lucas? Why do you have to be an ass about Riley?" Zay demanded.
"She makes it easy Zay," Lucas said and stood up from the ground. He wiped his jeans and shook his head in anger. Lucas clenched his jaw and made fists before releasing them.
"Cut it out, at least for tonight! It is our last homecoming game and I want to enjoy it with all my best friends" Zay begged and clasped his hands together.
"Whatever let's just catch up to Maya so we can't sit with Smackle and Farkle," Lucas said as he pointed to the subway.
"Crap I left my wallet back at Topanga's, I think Riles is still there" Zay commented and smacked his pants.
"Look I got it don't worry, I won't say anything mean to the Princess," Lucas said and rolled his eyes.
Zay bit back his words and just held up his hands to allow Lucas to go to the café. At least in his mind, the two had to say something to one another. Lucas handed Zay his MetroCard before walking back to Topanga's. He had no idea what he was going to say to Riley and he hoped he didn't have to. He walked down a flight of stairs to see the door closed and the lights were off inside of Topanga's.
Lucas was surprised to see the lights were all off at Topanga's and placed his hands on the glass. He peered into the darkness to see nothing but an empty café. He pulled the door to see that it was unlocked and felt uneasy about what was going on. Despite not speaking to Riley, he knew she wasn't irresponsible to leave the place unlocked.
"Um hello?" Lucas called out as he walked into the dark café. The bell rang over his head and he reached to his left to find the light switch when he saw something from the corner of his eye. Lucas fell back into the glass door with a heavy shove shattering the glass. He groaned and noticed that the person was dressed in all black and was running up the stairs.
Adrenaline began to build up in him and he scrambled onto his feet. He scurried inside and began looking for Riley.
"Ri- Ril - Riley?!" His voice shook with vulnerability and he was surprised he even got her name out. Chairs were strewn haphazardly on the floor and the café counter was bare except for a rag. Lucas heard a whimper and knew where she was. He slid to his knees and saw Riley lying face down behind the bar. Her hair was spread out around her and her skirt hiked up.
"Riley?" Lucas cried and picked her head up as she cried again.
"Lucas?" She questioned as tried sitting up.
"Riley, please stay still I have to call the cops" Lucas begged as he searched for his phone in his pocket. His fingers trembled as he dialed the police and his voice cracked. After reading off the numbers to the police and hanging up he looked down at Riley who was curled in a fetal position.
He studied her as he noticed her underwear further away from the two and he froze. That was a question he didn't want to be answered right now. All that he knew was that she needed him and the three years of anger melted away. She pulled down her skirt and tried sitting up which made Lucas move away.
"No Lucas please, don't leave me" She cried and held him tightly.
"Please I know you don't like me, but don't leave me alone, please Lucas, please"
He held her tightly as she broke down within his arms.
"Don't worry Riley I got you, no one will hurt, no one" He whispered.
He held her for about five minutes before the cops arrived. Before he knew it Riley was on a stretcher and cops were asking him about twenty questions at once. Yet it didn't matter because he just stared at Riley as she was strapped in and crying.
"Son?" The Officer asked.
"I … I … didn't see him sir, but I know he was heavier and taller than I" Lucas croaked.
The Officer noticed Lucas's gaze and patted him on the back. He comprehended that Lucas was not going to be helpful until he knew that Riley was going to be alright.
"Lucas?" Riley cried and Lucas walked over. She grabbed his hand and began to cry as the paramedic placed an IV in her arm.
"I'm right here Riley," Lucas said as she squeezed his hand.
"Young man, only family can ride with her, you can meet us at Mount Sinai," The Paramedic said as Riley gripped his hand tighter.
"Please" Lucas begged as the stretcher moved away from him and Riley thrashed crying for Lucas.
Lucas stood dumbfounded and watched Riley begged for him. Thumps filled his ears and he realized his own heart was racing for her. He was scared for her and he did not know what to do.
"Son?" The Officer said and Lucas turned to him. The Officer handed Lucas's what he could only figure was Riley's bag and some papers.
"Go to her," The Officer said as Lucas without a second thought ran out of Topanga's.

We Could Be The Greatest Team 3/Rucas
Chapter 1 Chapter 2 “Fun, flirty, fluffy and oh so sweet one-shots about Rucas and Joshaya!”
Enjoy!
You’re My Weakness
Riley and Lucas had a great relationship and understanding between them. They were kind of known as the ‘golden couple’ and everyone adored the two of them together.
But sometimes, their competitiveness came out and their sweet and lovable personalities were replaced with feistiness and cheekiness.
OoOoOoOo
Lucas, a born athlete, was captain of the football and baseball teams and Riley, finally made cheer captain after many, many tries over the years.
With everyone growing up and maturing, Lucas and Riley blossomed into beautiful and handsome young adults. Lucas was now reaching over 6 feet in height and sporting a fit and lean body. Riley was still tall and thin, maturing in all the right places and puberty, it did wonders for the teenagers.
So of course, they use that to their advantage and pushed the others buttons.
Which, bring us to right now.
Lucas and Riley had a slight ‘disagreement’ in where Lucas said something in a joking manner and Riley took it the wrong way.
So, the outcome resulted in a bet neither wanted to lose. The rules were simple. You give into the other, you lose. Willpower was the name of the game, but in reality, it came down to who had the better hand and more self-control.
OoOoOoOo
The following morning, bright and early, Riley arrived on campus, needing to finish up something for the Spring Formal and of course, put her plan into motion.
When she finished the design for the flyers, more students started to arrive and it was show time.
Lucas was patiently waiting by Riley's locker when the sounds of whistle and howling could be heard down the hall. Rolling his eyes at his male population for being such pigs, Lucas nearly fell over when Riley rounded the corner in a simple pink lace dress with black ankle boots.
Now, it wasn't necessarily the outfit that caught him off guard. No, it was the fact that the dress fitted Riley's body perfectly and showed it off well, without showing off too much.
And the length, dear lord. It fell about mid-thigh and when Riley saw Lucas staring intently at her, she bent down, pretending to fix her shoe as the material slowly crept higher up her leg.
Lucas caught on immediately to Riley's game and quickly moved behind his girlfriend to shield her from onlookers. "Riley," Lucas said in a low and stern voice out of the corner of his mouth.
"Yes, love?" She asked sweetly, standing back up.
"You're playing dirty," he hisses in her ear, pulling her against his body.
"No, I'm playing to win," Riley winks, leaning up and kissing the corner of Lucas' mouth before walking away and swaying her hips playfully.
Lucas lets out a deep and frustrated groan as he stomps off to his first class.
All day, Riley would subtly push Lucas' buttons and his restraint was running thin. Though she was a minx, he loved it. And, he loved her.
OoOoOoOo
The next morning, things were back to normal with Lucas and Riley being their happy-go-lucky selves. But Lucas, had something up his sleeve. Call it payback for yesterday.
He didn’t have baseball practice that afternoon, but he worked out every day to stay healthy. Which, led him to the track where his girlfriend and a few girls were practicing their routine.
Quickly taking off his shirt and throwing it off to the side, Lucas starts running, knowing in about ten seconds he would have her attention. And, he did. Perfect.
As soon as he stepped foot on the track, he felt eyes on his back and internally smirked, knowing Riley couldn't keep her eyes off his shirtless body. His abs, one of her weaknesses.
He saw her flustered state and when he ran past the group, gave her a playful wink and continued on.
He ran about two miles before leaving, feeling like he got Riley right where he wanted her.
Riley had to admit, Lucas' performance was good, genius even. But she, she wasn't giving up that easily and she was going to end this once and for all.
OoOoOoOo
Riley was relatively calm over the past few days and Lucas wasn't sure what to think. This was a momentary pause in their 'game', but Lucas was sure his move affected Riley. He saw it in her eyes and her body language. So, why wasn't she pushing back?
Riley saw Lucas' perplexed expression and took that as her lead to play her last move.
OoOoOoOo
It was the end of the day and the couple was hanging out after school before practice. They were sitting next to each other on the bleachers, but keeping some distance as they couldn’t be too close just yet. There was a comfortable silence and as they were enjoying the soft breeze, Riley started to gently draw patterns on Lucas' thigh.
She saw him stiffen out of the corner of her eye and edged a little closer, seeing how far she can go. He clinched his hands tightly into fists, his knuckles tuning white as within seconds, they were now thigh to thigh.
The sudden contact took them both by surprise as it's been almost a week since any real physical contact has happened between the two of them. Which, in teenage years feels like an eternity.
Riley's drawing continues on for a few more minutes until her hand starts moving further up Lucas' thigh, getting close to one of his most important anatomy.
His right hand quickly grabs her hand before she could do anything else, holding it tightly in his grip. "Riley," Lucas warns with a glare.
"What?" Riley questions, slowly getting up to straddle one of Lucas' leg.
"This isn't fair," Lucas sneers, gripping her hips.
"What's not fair? I'm not doing anything but sitting on my boyfriend's leg," Riley justifies, placing her arms around his neck.
"You sly woman," Lucas whispers, pulling Riley closer and giving hey feather like kisses right behind her ear. "Two can play this game."
She shivers at the action as it's anyone's game right now because Lucas is dishing it right back at her. Something that majorly turns her on.
"That's true, babe. But, you know I'm the queen of seduction," Riley murmurs, throwing her other leg over Lucas so she's now straddling his lap.
Lucas moans at the new position, holding Riley’s hips firmly and stopping her from what he knows she’s planning as he responds, “I wouldn’t take it that far but, you do know your way to my heart,” winking at her and giving her a heated kiss. “Just, be careful Riles. I still have a few things up my sleeve.”
“Prove it,” Riley challenges, grinding over Lucas’ member that quickly starts to get hard.
Lucas only hisses in pleasure, bucking involuntarily as Riley continues her steady movements, loving the feeling and that she has this power over Lucas.
“Come on baby, I’m waiting,” she continues, feeling the desire growing.
“Oh god, princess,” Lucas shouts out, not being able to hold back any longer. “You win. I need you right now!”
“I’m all yours,” Riley grins as Lucas kisses her with so much passion it’s magical.
They’re making out for a few minutes, Lucas’ hand very close to Riley’s womanhood and about to give into her need when they suddenly hear voices coming their direction.
Groaning in annoyance, they fix themselves up as Riley gives Lucas one last kiss before running down the flight on bleachers to meet her squad. He follows right behind her and goes the other way, just wanting practice to be over with so he could get back to more enjoyable things.
Though he hated losing, he’ll lose to Riley any day knowing the reward was definitely worth the defeat.

Fic asks #2?
What’s your least favourite thing you wrote this year? Hands down, that would have to be the PSA chapter of The Farkle Files. "Dangerous Labels"After reading so many inaccurate comments about Joshaya being "illegal" and Lucas being toxic- I decided that I wanted to address these topics a little differently than just yet another post that the fandom could ignore.Once I decided to write this "PSA" into my story, I gathered information about both situations and contacted experts in NYS Penal law & Negative human behaviors. I made the decision to seek help because I wanted to make sure I gave both topics the respect they deserve. Once I explained what I was doing and why, both parties jumped in with both feet. They each reviewed the data I supplied and actively viewed more on their own. We then discussed the inaccurate labels/terms that were being thrown around in the fandom. They explained their findings to me, offered some additional input on what they saw and offered additional resources if needed. From there, I wrote a lengthy AN & the chapter, sent it to them to verify what I wrote and posted it. I hated the fact that I felt it was necessary to have to do any of it.... but as an adult in a fandom that includes many ages I couldn't stay silent about the topics at hand. The fandom used these labels for situations/relationships they didn't like... which completely downplays the severity of the crimes that occur under the "guise" of these labels. When misapplied, both labels can have devastating consequences.

yeah, i'm fucking with your new fic. it's written so good, plus i like joshaya, so that was a bonus hehe. but i was wondering, are all chapters going to be that long, or was it just because it was the first chapter? (long chapters are good tho) and how long will it take until the next chapter is out? have a great day!
Yo. I really, REALLY hope it’s not. I was so mad at how fucking long this was. I don’t think Riley’s will be. As for when I’ll post, I really don’t know. I want to finish Life on Mars before updating that, so. We gon’ see. Thanks for the love 😘
