This is narrow-sighted. This is like saying you can't be punk if you shop at Wal-Mart.
Some of us are poor.
Some of us don't have the time or motor ability to sew our clothes, and what we can afford is cheap and destructible. There is no ethical consumption under late-stage capitalism. I do not have the time to research every purchase I make before making it and also brush my teeth and take my meds and have time to laugh at the end of the day so my soul doesn't die.
And I am more punk than you.
What I mean is, some of us are doing everything we can to survive, and that IS inherently punk. Shame comes to us from every side if you are poor, and this post joins in that shaming.
This world has no shortage of true evil and vile complicity. So are you sure this is the best target for your shaming? Have you thought it all the way through before denying a powerful and healing label to certain people? Is it kind? Because if it ain't kind, it ain't punk.
I mean this as kindly as I can say it: are you absolutely sure that people who buy cheap things are really the target you need to be directing your punk energy towards? Is this gatekeeping a good use of our energy in an unjust world? Before you continue, are you absolutely sure it is punk to reinforce this boundary?
[Edit: someone sent me an ask about this post, which I answered, in case you want more of me talking about this topic.]
