West Week Ever: Pop Culture In Review - 7/28/17
One of the best discoveries I’ve made has been the digital subchannel Heroes & Icons. If you’re a cord cutter, then get yourself an antenna and check this thing out. My favorite aspect of it, however, is the fact that it runs a 5-hour Star Trek block six nights a week. Star Trek at 8, Star Trek: The Next Generation at 9, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine at 10, Star Trek: Voyager at 11, and Enterprise at 12. Sunday through Friday. And on Sundays they actually kick things off with Star Trek: The Animated Series at 7. I’ve pretty much watched nothing but Star Trek for the past 2 weeks. I’ve been reacquainted with favorite episodes, like TNG‘s “Chain of Command” and DS9‘s “Far Beyond the Stars”. I’ve discovered some hidden gems, like TOS‘s ” The Cloud Minders”. I’ve even discovered that I don’t hate Voyager or Enterprise as much as I thought I did.
I don’t talk about this too much, but the first 12 years or so of my life were comprised of pretty much NOTHING but Star Trek. From 1987-94, my favorite show on television was The Next Generation. When DS9 debuted, I expected it to continue my love affair, but it felt too preachy with its Space Holocaust allegory. It was in the later seasons, once the Dominion War began, that it actually ensconced itself as my favorite iteration of the franchise. By the time Voyager debuted, I had discovered comics, and they became my new mistress. While I watched about 4 hours of TNG a day in high school (Channel 20 REALLY loved playing TNG), my heart didn’t have room in it for a new Trek, so I “No time for love, Dr. Jones”‘ed Captain Janeway and her crew. Enterprise debuted when I was in college, and  I was simply too busy worried about other shit to watch Captain Quantum Leap and his crew. Plus, due to some kind of contractual fallout, Ithaca didn’t get UPN. So, since the finale of DS9, my Trekkerdom lay dormant.
But when I say “I’ve forgotten more than you’ll ever know”, that’s primarily about Star Trek. I had several editions of the Star Trek Encyclopedia, I had the Technical Manual, the Technical Journal, the Star Trek Chronology. All of it. I’ve got the figures, and the role play toys. I even created my own uniform for Halloween back in the 90s. I was all Trek, 24/7, and you couldn’t tell me shit. Over time, though, that trivia got overwritten by X-Men 1st appearance notations and the names of TNBC actresses. What I’m saying, though, is that Heroes & Icons brought it all rushing back. It’s like I’m 15 again, blowing the evening watching Star Trek episodes I’ve already seen hundreds of times already. It’s also given me new perspectives on things that completely went over my head when I was younger. For example, Sisko is the Bajorans’ Space Jesus, and that’s pretty heavy. Even he doesn’t believe it, but in the end, yup it turns out he’s Space Jesus. I’ve also got thoughts on the current state of the franchise, too.
youtube
At SDCC, we got the above trailer for Star Trek: Discovery, which will air in North America on CBS All Access (yes, Dean, I know you’ll say All Anal Access because it sucks that we have to subscribe to another service just to watch this thing). I had no interest in this show because everything I heard about it didn’t sound like Star Trek. Now, though, the more they try to sell it as a bunch of new ideas, the more it just sounds like DS9. It’s gonna be Trek with interpersonal conflict. Great. I can get down with that. Its aesthetic seems more like late-era Stargate than Trek, though – especially those Klingon designs. There are certain things, though, that still feel like they miss the mark.
Take for example the fact that the show will feature the first same-sex couple on a Star Trek series, played by Rent‘s Anthony Rapp and My So Called Life‘s Wilson Cruz. Yeah, I get that representation is important, but it bothers me that this is being done in a prequel series, set before the events of the original Star Trek. With the exception of Enterprise, this is the series that takes place the closest to our timeline, so it’s really not much of a leap to think that same-sex couples exist. Ya know what would’ve meant more to me (as a straight, cis male who really doesn’t have a dog in the race but is still opinionated)? If the show had actually been a post-Dominion War, sequel series to TNG/DS9/Voyager, and it featured a same-sex couple. Science fiction tends to go 2 ways: it’s either dystopian or it’s about HOPE. As it stands, from what we’ve seen, same-sex couples are pretty much nonexistent in the 24th century. Yeah, I’m sure they exist, but we never saw them. It seems like it would be a testament to how enduring they are to see them that far in the future as opposed to just a couple of hundred years from now, when Discovery is set.
I could also be politicizing this for my own agenda, as I really want to know what happened after the war ended. Sure, there are books and stuff, but those things aren’t canon. I feel there are so many stories to tell from that era, and I’d love to see the franchise move forward instead of dance between the raindrops of continuity in the past. It feels like they’re stalling, which is how it felt with Enterprise and even the Kelvin movies. Someone, somewhere out there has got to have a great idea as to how to move the franchise forward and I hope CBS/Paramount finds them sooner rather than later.
SDCC Bullet Points
The bulk of San Diego Comic Con took place over the weekend, and here’s some stuff that debuted:
Michelle Pfeiffer is Hank Pym’s lost wife, Janet Van Dyne, in Ant-Man and The Wasp
The Captain Marvel film will be set in the 90s, and introduce the Skrulls to the MCU. Oh, and Nick Fury will have 2 eyes
youtube
We got this trailer for Ready Player One, which was hella polarizing. It seems a lot of folks hated the book on which it’s based. If you ask me, it just looks like a cinematic version of this commercial:
youtube
Comic creator Frank Miller, of 300 and Sin City fame, is writing a Superman: Year One story with art from John Romita Jr. Nothing about that sentence makes me want to open my wallet.
youtube
We got a new trailer for X-Men spinoff, The Gifted. I’m actually surprised they used established mutants like Polaris and Thunderbird. And is that actually Fenris?! I want to like this, but it just looks so…Fox.
youtube
We got a new trailer for The Defenders on Netflix. I get that this is the culmination of all the Marvel Netflix shows, but it didn’t do much for me since I’ve only seen 2 out of 5 seasons so far. There’s no way I’ll get caught up by this premiere date, but I’m sure it’ll mean more to me once I’m up to date. Kinda tired of the hallway fight trope, though.
youtube
Legends of Tomorrow is such a fun show. It started kinda dry, but got so much better last year. It reminds me of a syndicated Saturday afternoon show, but in a good way.
youtube
This Justice League trailer did very little for me. It’s like, sure, Wonder Woman’s cool, but we JUST saw her. Aquaman seems cool, but he’s not really “Aquaman”. I’ll see it, but I ain’t looking forward to it. No, for me, November belongs to:
youtube
Things You Might Have Missed This Week
We’ll have to wait a bit longer for our annual dose of Abbi and Ilana, as Comedy Central has moved the Broad City season 4 premiere from August 23rd to September 13th
A few months ago, it was reported that Amy Schumer would be starring in a Barbie movie. Well, I made fun of that, she blocked me on Twitter, and then eventually dropped out of the role. Now they’re reporting that Anne Hathaway is up for the role, which is somehow more bewildering than the Schumer choice…
Justin Bieber cancelled the rest of his Purpose world tour because he was “committing his life to Christ”. This pissed off his crew, as they were left without jobs. He, then, proceeded to run over a paparazzo with his truck while leaving church. I swear, you can’t make this shit up!
Amazon’s Jeff Bezos has replaced Bill Gates as the richest man in the world.
Beginning September 29th, Hulu will begin streaming the Warner Bros shows that comprised ABC’s TGIF lineup, including Perfect Strangers, Family Matters, Full House, Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper, and Step By Step. Meanwhile, Netflix is feverishly developing Perfecter Strangers, Family Still Matters, Chillin’ With Mr. Cooper, and Step By Step By Step.
I haven’t seen a non-country music video in years, but apparently they still make them, as Katy Perry will host the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards
Speaking of the VMAs, following the lead of the MTV Movie Awards, they’re doing away with the gendered categories Best Male/Best Female Artist, to be replaced by Artist of the Year. Also, in a bit of pandering,  they’ve created the Best Fight Against the System, for those artists who have called for folks to #RESIST and all that.
Though I felt its farcical nature wore a bit thin during its first season, TBS’s Angie Tribeca has been renewed for season 4.
Smallville‘s Tom Welling is joining Fox’s Lucifer and *yawn* that’s really all there is to say about that.
Netflix has ordered 20 episodes of the animated series Disenchantment from The Simpsons creator Matt Groening. It will features the voices of Nat Faxon, Eric Andre, and Abbi Jacobson. Apparently it’s about elves and trolls and shit. Not really my bag, baby.
Person of Interest‘s Michael Emerson has been cast in a mysterious role for Arrow‘s 6th season. So, he’s probably Deathstroke’s accountant or something.
Because SyFy just doesn’t care anymore, and because they need something to air between Sharknados, Wynonna Earp has been renewed for a 3rd season.
The Wonder Woman sequel has a release date of December 13th, 2019
Apple discontinued the iPod Nano and Shuffle models, as they are the last remaining models that cannot run iOS apps.
Current Superman Henry Cavill grew a mustache for his role in Mission Impossible 37: Mission Harder, which will have to be digitally removed for Justice League reshoots. Ya know, the movie where he’s supposed to be dead, but is actually the worst kept secret in Hollywood.
Lionel Richie and Charlie Puth are in talks to join ABC’s American Idol reboot as judges. Yeah, that’s funny. Unless they’re coaching the contestants on how to get caught cheating while dancing on the ceiling, I’m not sure what Richie’s old ass brings to the table. And Puth is simply too new to be judging anybody.
New James Bond film in 2019. Nobody knows who’s playing him or directing the thing, but it’s coming. Yesiree, Bob!
Since they’re handing out cinematic universes like chicken samples at a food court, the John Wick universe will be expanded by the female-focused film, Ballerina.
Michael Phelps raced a CGI shark and people felt betrayed. He’s the friggin’ son of Poseidon! He can’t race ACTUAL sharks! There would be civil unrest beneath the surface!
With DC being the political capital of the country, it’s hard for a news person to stand out because the place is crawling with them. That wasn’t true, however, for Jim Vance. Everyone knew him and the man was an institution. Coming to NBC4 in 1969, he was one of the first Black anchors in a major news market. He anchored for over 4 decades, ingraining himself into the families of those who watched him.
When I was a toddler, I was really into the local news (I’ve always said I’m regressing as I get older), and I could name every anchor on every local newscast. And this was a golden age of DC news. You had the great Glenn Brenner, you had Maury Povich before he became a talk show host, and you had Vance. There was something about him that made him seem like your aunt’s cool boyfriend. He was an old man with a hoop earring. We used to laugh about it, but secretly I was hating because I knew I’d never be able to pull that off at his age. He rode motorcycles and laughed inappropriately at news stories he found funny. He was a guy who made you glad to watch the news, especially as the cries of Fake News! grew louder.
Back in May, Vance announced that he had been diagnosed with cancer, and it advanced rather quickly. He passed away last Saturday morning, and the announcement touched all corners of the DC area (no, I’m not calling it the DMV!). It was touching to see all of the tributes to him on the local stations, from those who were colleagues and competitors. Last Saturday night, News4 spent the entire 11 PM news talking about Vance and what he meant to DC. This might sound crazy, but it was so refreshing to watch the news without a single drop of actual news being reported. No Trump b.s., no local murders, not even a weather report. Just 30 minutes about a man who we basically grew up with in our homes. I always kinda took him for granted because you just expected he would be there every evening, but I’ve certainly missed him since he’s gone. I know he won’t mean much to those of you outside the DC viewing area, but believe me when I say that everybody here knew who Jim Vance was, and we’re all going to miss him in one way or another. For that reason, Jim Vance had the West Life Ever.

So. I want to remake Zevran's original Origins armor since my first set is now 5 years old. I love his Antivan Crows uniform look more because its more iconic, but that shit is too goddamn hot to wear to SDCC again. I yearn to feel the coastal breeze on my crotch, once more. So I thought, why not both? Im not really digging this design though. Thoughts?

Star Wars Celebration is in town and Hasbro has taken the opportunity to display some new figures for us all – along with something that this particular fly-boy has been waiting on for a long time…
Ready to see the best in show in 3.75″, 6″ and beyond? Click on through to see the Hasbro Star Wars toy reveals from Celebration 2019!
Luke Skywalker Three-Pack: Jedi Destiny (The Vintage Collection)
Tumblr media
There wasn’t a great deal of 3.75″ on display at Celebration but this new pack still earned the limelight. Featuring super-articulated versions of Luke Skywalker in Stormtrooper disguise, X-Wing pilot uniform and as a Jedi Knight from his arrival at Jabba’s Palace, this is the ultimate new-collector friendly Luke Skywalker starter set.
Tumblr media
Even if you already have serviceable versions of the character in these outfits, the photo-real face printing makes an enormous difference to the likeness. And let’s be honest: getting a Jedi Knight Luke with an accurate cloak is the ultimate sweetener.
Galaxy’s Edge Exclusive Black Series Sets
Let’s move on to the 6″ scale, where Hasbro officially launched a raft of exclusive Black Series figures for the upcoming Galaxy’s Edge theme park…
Tumblr media
The first set, Smuggler’s Run, features a new version of Rey from The Last Jedi, featuring a photo real likeness, along with Chewbacca (the 2015 The Force Awakens version) and a brand new release in Hondo Ohnaka, stalwart of Clone Wars and Rebels. The set is rounded out with two Porgs.
Tumblr media
The First Order pack features a kitbashed Kylo Ren, Commander Pyre (a gold Stormtrooper from Resistance) and a Mountain Trooper, a new soldier that looks like a cross between the Hovertank Driver and Range Trooper. Much like the Porgs in Smuggler’s Run, the First Order set also includes an MSE droid with rolling wheels.
Tumblr media
The final set, Droid Depot, brings us updated versions of C-3PO and BB-8, a repack of R2-D2 and a new droid in DJ R3X, which looks like exactly how you might imagine a crassly commercialised version of a Star Wars droid to look.
In a neat touch the packaging was designed to look like something that you could buy in the Star Wars universe. YMMV on how successful that is, but it definitely makes the exclusives that much more worthwhile.
Black Series Emperor Palpatine with Throne
Tumblr media
It’s been a big week for ol’ Sheev Palpatine, and now the ultimate evil in the universe finally has the ultimate toy.
Collectors have been asking about this for a while, and Hasbro is now delivering with the Deluxe Black Series Emperor Palpatine. Based on his appearance in Return of the Jedi, the Emperor comes packed with his distinctive throne from the second Death Star, three different heads and Force lightning effects.
Taste the Rainbow: SDCC Exclusives
The Retro Collection is already not for me – re-releases of iconic toys that have been supplanted in quality for over 20 years already. But for some these things are bound to scratch an itch.
The Retro Collection SDCC exclusive Darth Vader is something I can easily see fitting into place in design studios across the land. It’s a Star Wars toy for people who don’t collect Star Wars toys, in much the same way that The Last Jedi was a Star Wars film for people who don’t like Star Wars films.
Tumblr media
The SDCC exclusive Boba Fett is a re-release of the 6″ figure but in vintage action figure colours – equally rainbow, but with a little more precedent.
As someone on Rebelscum posted, “these are the best kinds of exclusives – ones I don’t want”. Can’t say fairer than that.
This is Red 5 Standing By
Now on to the best reveal of Star Wars Celebration Chicago – something that I do want very much: the Black Series Luke Skywalker X-Wing Helmet.
There are only a select few buckets that I would ever want to own (the OT Scout Trooper and TIE Fighter Pilot being the remaining exceptions), but Luke’s X-Wing pilot helmet is front and centre of that list.
That’s why I’m so happy to see this Black Series version ready for market; and it looks like Hasbro has delivered. Features include:
Highly-detailed movie-inspired deco with interior padding
Synchronized LED lights inside the visor
Three internal speakers create a surround sound experience and simulate the blasts of enemy vehicles
Flip switch to choose between a simulation of piloting an X-Wing at the Battle of Yavin or a Snowspeeder at the Battle of Hoth
The Black Series Luke Skywalker X-Wing Helmet is hitting retail in October at an RRP of $99.00. X-Wing vs TIE Fighter LAN sessions are now set to get that much more intense…
That’s it for the newsworthy Hasbro reveals. It’s a mixed bag but there’s something in there for everyone, which is exactly how Star Wars should be.
**
On a related note, Lucasfilm have also revealed the branding look for The Rise of Skywalker merchandise.
Tumblr media
It’s Kylo Ren focused, which makes sense given that this is Disney’s last big opportunity to push Ren as the in-house replacement for Darth Vader. However it does then have the unfortunate side effect of looking remarkably similar to the packaging for The Force Awakens…
Ah well. It’s OK, I guess, but it’s still just a box. It all goes in the recycling anyway because these things were made to be played with.

Fans will be able to start or add to their collections – as well as purchase outstanding gifts for the fans in their lives – with special prices throughout the convention at Booth #3249, beginning Wednesday, July 18 through Sunday, July 22 at the San Diego Convention Center. They’ll also be among the first to get a look at some of Eaglemoss’ most exciting new releases.
After the tremendous success of Season 1 of Star Trek: Discovery, Eaglemoss is now gearing up for season 2 with a preview of two soon-to-be released ships from the Star Trek: Discovery Official Starships Collection – the U.S.S. Europa and one of the few Vulcan designs seen in the series so far, the Vulcan Cruiser.
Fans in attendance will also be among the first to get their hands on two recent additions to Eaglemoss’ line of Star Trek Starships XL Editions – the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A and the U.S.S. Defiant NX-74205, Starfleet’s first true warship. On display, but not yet available for purchase, will be the next pair of XL Editions due to be released in Q4 of 2018 – the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-B and the Miranda-class U.S.S. Reliant.
Visitors will also get a first look at two new Bonus ships from the original Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection – Rick Sternbach’s U.S.S. Voyager Concept and the Klingon Bird-of-Prey (Landing Position).
Rounding out Eaglemoss’ Star Trek presence is perhaps their most exciting news yet – the all-new Official Star Trek Collector’s Busts. This new collection features the iconic captains of Starfleet and other memorable characters from over 50 years of Star Trek TV and movie history, capturing them in impressive detail with highly accurate likenesses, uniforms and props. These hand-painted polyresin busts are 4.5 to 6” tall, come complete with a fact-filled magazine, and form an essential addition to any Star Trek collection. On display at SDCC for the first time anywhere will be four fan favorites – Kirk, Spock, Worf and Data.
Sticking with sci-fi, Eaglemoss’ SDCC lineup also includes the newly released Battlestar Galactica: The Official Ships Collection, featuring models from both the classic 1978 and 2004 series. Each of these die-cast ships is between 8 and 11 inches long and includes a 16-page magazine. In addition to featuring the first two ships in the series at the booth, Eaglemoss will be selling the convention- exclusive variant of the Viper Mark II featuring the Lee “Apollo” Adama Callsign and tail number. Strictly limited to only 500 ships worldwide, each comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity. Fans will also be able to sneak a peek at the next ship in the collection, the Battlestar Galactica itself from the 2004 re-imagined series.
The fan-favorite Alien and Predator Official Figurine Collection will also be represented at SDCC, with a preview of the upcoming Special Edition of Ripley in the Power Loader from Aliens. Produced in the same 1/16 scale as the rest of the collection, it’s the perfect companion to the already released Alien Xenomorph Queen Special.
Soaring from sci-if to superheroes, the newest additions to Eaglemoss’ popular lines of DC Comics collectibles will also be showcased. All seven stars of the newest mini-series in the DC Superheroes Figurine Collection, the Justice League Animated Series, will be on display, as will all six heroes and villains from the second mini-series of Batman Animated Series Figurines. Last but certainly not least, the first five iterations of Diana of Themyscira from the all-new Wonder Woman Mythologies Collection will also be shown.
Throughout the convention, Eaglemoss will provide fans with extra incentive to stop by the booth each and every day. Eaglemoss’ “Mega Bundles Giveaway” is open to everyone who stops by and daily prize packages are as follows:

All images: CBS
Hey, did you hear there’s a new Star Trek show starting September 24? Anticipation is mighty high here at io9—but for everyone who hasn’t been cataloguing every bit of info that CBS has revealed about Star Trek: Discovery on the long road to its debut, we’ve assembled this handy guide to get you up to speed.
Timeline and setting
Discovery, the sixth live-action Star Trek series, was initially announced as taking place in the prime timeline, the same universe as the other TV shows and their related films—but not the recent J.J. Abrams directed and/or produced movies. Since it takes place 10 years prior to the events of The Original Series, it’s more relevant to that show than Enterprise, which took place a century prior. That also means we’ll be seeing some retro-future takes on the classic show’s signature tech flourishes, including a variant on the phaser (though the badges and the flip communicators look fairly familiar). The Starfleet uniforms, however, are closer in look to Enterprise’s blue jumpsuits, rather than the classic colorful costumes of original Trek. (For once, though, away teams will get body armor, an idea that clearly fell out of fashion by the time Captain Kirk and company were boldly going beyond.) As the title implies, most of the action will center on the USS Discovery, though it won’t start there; instead, it seems we’ll first meet the main character when she’s serving aboard the USS Shenzou.
Main characters
Lt. Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green)
Discovery’s protagonist is unique in the Star Trek pantheon for a variety of reasons. One is that—unlike Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway, and Archer—Burnham is not (yet) a captain. Another is that she was raised on Vulcan after her birth parents (both human) were killed by Klingons. Her adoptive parents just happen to be Spock’s parents, Sarek and Amanda Grayson, and her unusual upbringing means she’s the first human to have attended both the Vulcan Learning Center and the Vulcan Science Academy. (This is the first we’ve ever heard that Spock had a sister, though one of Discovery’s producers insists there will eventually be an explanation for that.) Based on ominous hints we’ve seen in the trailers, an early episode will explain the incident that causes then-First Officer Burnham to leave the Shenzou, where she’s serving under Captain Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh), and end up on the Discovery, to be Number One under Captain Lorca (Jason Isaacs).
Sarek (James Frain)
We learned way back in January that Spock’s father was joining the show—as a younger version, quite obviously, of the character we first met on The Original Series. But it wasn’t until July’s San Diego Comic-Con that his specific connection to Burnham became known. In the first Discovery trailer, Sarek appears in a Vulcan flashback, as well as in hologram form to Burnham to counsel her about leadership. Sarek has a long history in Trek, first appearing with a strained relationship with his half-human, Starfleet son and eventually dying on The Next Generation, after sharing a number of intense scenes with Picard.
Captain Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh)
As mentioned above, she’s the top commander on the USS Shenzou. In the trailer, we learn that Burnham and Georgiou have been working together for awhile, and Georgiou has become confident that it’s time for her protégé to get her own command. That is, until something (maybe an alien object?) makes something (maybe very bad?) happen to Georgiou. We aren’t certain of her fate yet, but you might not want to get terribly attached to this particular character.
Captain Lorca (Jason Isaacs)
He’s the captain of the Discovery—but he’s not the star of the show, and that’s not the only thing that makes Lorca different from previous Star Trek captains. According to Isaacs, the character is “probably more fucked up” than most Starfleet officers, which means he’s been through some exceptionally crazy shit during his time in space. That’s a quality that could create an interesting dynamic between Lorca and Burnham; in the second trailer, he seems stern when speaking with her: “You helped start a war. Don’t you want to help me end it?”
Lt. Commander Saru (Doug Jones)
The alien science officer aboard the Discovery, Saru’s the guy who delivers the trailer’s most chilling line: “My people were biologically determined for one purpose alone: to sense the coming of death. I sense it coming now.” He’s a Kelpien, a race that’s new to both Starfleet and the Star Trek series overall; their ability to sense death evolved on a home planet where they were hunted as prey. He stands almost seven feet tall on his hooved feet. At SDCC, it was mentioned that Saru and Burnham have a “brother/sister relationship;” Jones has also said that Saru is a character equivalent to the Spock or Data of this series. That’s a telling description, since Trek loves to have a character with an alien point of view and, specifically, one who can comment on human characteristics.
Lt. Stamets (Anthony Rapp)
He’s another science officer aboard Discovery, an astromycologist (translation: this dude knows a lot about space fungus). A far more exciting fact about Lt. Stamets is that he’s Star Trek’s first openly gay character (on TV at least; in the movies, Sulu has a male partner). As it happens, Discovery also has Star Trek’s second openly gay TV character as well, in the form of Lt. Stamets’ partner: ship’s doctor Dr. Hugh Culber (played by Wilson Cruz).
Cadet Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman)
She is an eager young Starfleet cadet assigned to Discovery, specializing in engineering and reporting to Lt. Stamets. After she becomes Burnham’s roommate, they form what Wiseman describes as “an unlikely friendship.”
Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson)
This character—full name: Harcourt Fenton Mudd—is a con man, smuggler, and delightful sleaze who first appeared on The Original Series and has since become a cult favorite, largely thanks to Roger C. Carmel’s over-the-top performance. You can get a quick glimpse of Wilson’s take on Mudd as a younger man (“Are you mad?” “I’m MUDD!”) in the second Discovery trailer.
T’Kuvma (Chris Obi)
He’s a Klingon leader seeking to unite the 24 great Klingon houses—no easy task, especially since (as the second trailer reminds us) “the Klingon Empire has been in disarray for generations.” Klingons are the primary antagonists on Discovery, but the show will portray them as honorable warriors with—as you can see on T’Kuvma here—some really fantastic battle ensembles, not to mention new ships, at least one highly elaborate coffin, subtitles (when they’re speaking Klingon), and a biological reason for those distinctive forehead ridges.
Story and conflict
As mentioned above, Discovery will find the Federation at war with the Klingons. The show will run 15 episodes and we know a teeny bit about the first four installments. Episode one is titled “The Vulcan Hello,” and the description is nearly exactly what the two trailers have already revealed:
While patrolling Federation space, the USS Shenzhou encounters an object of unknown origin, putting First Officer Michael Burnham to her greatest test yet.
Subsequent known episode titles include “Battle at the Binary Stars,” “Context Is for Kings,” and “The Butcher’s Knife Cares Not for the Lamb’s Cry,” though we don’t have plot descriptions for those yet. Based on hints from showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg, however, the season will also focus on how the characters work through their differences together. Based on what the showrunners have said, he war with the Klingons will be in some way a comment on current political events, much like The Original Series reflected then-contemporary Cold War tensions. And Burnham will have to cope with whatever happened on the Shenzou, growing into the kind of leader that Sarek encourages her to be. She may also find herself caught between Vulcan and human cultures, much like her adoptive brother Spock was.
And the rest
The Discovery is a science vessel, which sets it apart from the Enterprise, which, as the flagship, was tasked with all sorts of things; with Voyager, which was designed specifically for long-term exploration; and Deep Space Nine, which was a space station. (And also very different from the Defiant, Deep Space Nine’s ship, which was designed to fight.) According to Memory Alpha, science vessels aren’t meant to be out in space for long periods of time, so maybe Discovery will be docked more often than in the other shows.
The design of the Discovery itself can be described, in the words of io9's Katharine Trendacosta, as being “sort of like Ralph McQuarrie’s original concept art for a new Enterprise and the original show’s ship had a baby. A baby about to go where no one has gone before.”
Composer Jeff Russo’s Discovery theme song calls back to Alexander Courage’s iconic original, while also doing its own melodious thing.
There will be a Mirror Universe episode.
After some initial misinterpretation, it’s actually totally fine to say “God” (as in “For God’s sakes!”) on the show.
There will be Tribbles.
Star Trek: Discovery premieres September 24 on CBS and CBS All Access. The rest of the series runs through November on CBS All Access, before taking a hiatus until January 2018. Each episode will be followed by Talking Trek, a live aftershow available on CBS All Access.

Soldier. Samurai. Leader. It’s time to talk about James “Logan” Howlett, AKA Wolverine.
To understand where Wolverine came from you first have to have a little lesson on the X-men. The X-men had been cancelled for a few years with their books being reprints of previous stories. Marvel decided to relaunch the series as a new team with character from around the world. Knowing this was happening, Roy Thomas asked the writer, Len Wein to create Canadian superhero. Thus in Incredible Hulk #180, the team introduced Wolverine in the very last panel of the issue with the next issue having him fighting both the Hulk and the Wendigo.  A few months later in Giant-Size X-men #1, Wolverine was asked by Professor X to join his new team of X-men to save the original team. The rest as the say is history. Wolverine’s gruff exterior proved popular with the readers and he became the one of the most popular character at the time. He eventually was given his own mini-series (which “The Wolverine” movie is loosely based one) and then an ongoing series.
As to the toy part, while he has had quite a few figures, many being remakes of existing costumes, he has nowhere near the amount of figures that Spider-man or Iron Man has. But he is actually in third for the number of figure in ML.  Throughout their time, TB nearly introduced him into most of their wave, but not all. For Hasbro, they seem to have a thing for Wolverine being part of a X-men based wave.
Made:
Weapon X
Recommend Figure: Toybiz Marvel Legends Series 7 Weapon X
Background:
As part of Team X, Logan was abducted by the Weapon Plus program. They experimented on him and bonded his skeleton with Adamantium. They used a helmet to try and brainwashed Logan into being their puppet for special operations, making him into a wild animal like man. However, Logan eventually broke free and attacked his capturers before escaping into the woods.
Why you need it for your collection?:
While iconic and the story has been repeated several times, it is not absolutely essential. The figure is good but not really worth the effort. Only for those that need to have every Wolverine.
Does it need a remake?:
Using the new build for Wolverine, then I could see this being remade. But otherwise it’s fine as is.
First Appearance
Recommend Figure: Toybiz Marvel Legends Face-Off Series 2 Wolverine with Sabretooth 2-pack
Background:
After leaving the Weapon Plus facility, he happened upon and attacked James and Heather Hudson. After they subdued him, they took him in and took care of him until he was back to being more human. James Hudson was a member of the Canadians governments self-defence Department K. He believed that Wolverine could be Canada’s patriotic hero just like Captain America. One of his first mission was to fight the Hulk. He appeared in this costume in the last panel.
Why you need it for your collection?:
Like all of the FA version, I think this should be got. If by any chance you get it mint, then you also get the best figure of Sabretooth.
Does it need a remake?:
Using the new build for Wolverine, then I could see this being remade. But otherwise it’s fine as is.
Tiger Stripe
Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Toy-R-Us Exclusive Red Hulk wave Wolverine (Variant)
Background:
It didn’t take Wolverine long to get a new costume as in his second appearance he had changes his costume to this. Made famous during the 90’s cartoon, it is the costume that Logan has worn for most of his career. Many of his other costumes are essentially based on this one.
Why you need it for your collection?:
Yes. This is Wolverine most iconic costume and is absolutely need for your collection.
Does it need a remake?:
Yes. None of the version of this costume as done it justice. The first version had him in a weird pose and the second was hard to find and used an older TB sculpt. Really need an update, even if it’s Hasbro’s Wolverine sculpt repainted.
Brown and Tan
Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Juggernaut wave Wolverine
Background:
The second Iconic costume which Wolverine wore for quite a while was inspired by the time he wore the Shi’Ar guard member Fang’s costume. He wore this all the way up to Jim Lee’s run of the books where he went back to his Tiger Stripe design.
Why you need it for your collection?:
Yes. This version of Wolverine is the best Wolverine figure to date.
Does it need a remake?:
No the one we got was perfect
Training Uniform
Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends 2-pack wave 1 Wolverine with Forge 2-pack
Background:
After the X-Tinction Agenda, the X-Men all came to dress in a single kind of team uniform. The team used them to help Lilandra.
Why you need it for your collection?:
The only reason to get this figure is if you get it mint and want the Forge figure it comes with. It too tall and skinny and really not worth any effort.
Does it need a remake?:
No. it is not an important costume unless they want to do a box set with other characters like Gambit, Storm and Jubilee.
New X-men
Recommend Figure: Toybiz X-men Classics Wolverine
Background:
During Grant Morrison hated run of the X-men, the team started wearing leather costumes similar to the first X-men movie.
Why you need it for your collection?:
I personally hated Grant Morrison run of the X-men book as I didn’t understand what was going on half the time. Only get this figure is you have to have all Wolverine figures.
Does it need a remake?:
No. it is not an important costume.
Astonishing  X-men
Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Diamond Exclusive Puck Wave Wolverine
Background:
After Xorn destroyed a part of New York, Cyclops decided they needed to make the X-men more friendly by making them wear costumes again. This is essentially an updated version of his classic costume. The design has been drawn differently by different artists.
Why you need it for your collection?:
If you get this version or the Apocalypse wave one, then I would recommend picking one up.
Does it need a remake?:
No. We have gotten 4 versions of this figure (2 masked and 2 unmasked) so it’s time to move onto another version.
X-Force
Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Hit-Monkey wave Wolverine
Background:
During and after the Messiah Complex Cyclops got Wolverine to create a new black op X-force who wore black and grey/white/silver version of their costumes. Their job as to get at people who would hurt mutants before they did, usually killing them.
Why you need it for your collection?:
I honestly think you should try and get this version to complete the team, either the SDCC box set that came with Psylocke and Archangel, or the general release version. The only difference between the 2 is the use of grey and silver.
Does it need a remake?:
No. Just got made and is in need of no remake as of yet.
