Fun fact: Corlys is originally quite familiar with bastards of house Strong being raised under a Velaryon household:
The amiable and well-loved Ser Lucamore Strong of the Kingsguard, a favorite of the smallfolk, was found to have been secretly wed, despite the vows that he had sworn as a White Sword. Worse, he had taken not one but three wives, keeping each woman ignorant of the other two and fathering no fewer than sixteen children on the three of them.
[...]
“You made a mockery of your oaths as a knight of the Kingsguard, but those were not the only vows you broke. You dishonored your marriage vows as well, not once but thrice. None of these women are lawfully wed, so these children I see behind you are bastards one and all. They are the true innocents in this, ser. Your wives were ignorant of one another, I am told, but each of them must surely have known that you were a White Sword, a knight of the Kingsguard.”
[...]
The second wife and her offspring would go to Driftmark, to be fostered by Daemon Velaryon, Lord of the Tides.... None were ever again to call themselves Strong, the queen decreed.
— Fire & Blood, The Long Reign
Corlys’ grandfather ruled Driftmark at the time this happened. I wouldn’t be surprised if Corlys’ close proximity to Strong bastards in his youth played a part in him being more receptive to accepting Strong bastards as Velaryons later on.
#corlys being like ''strong bastards? oh no. around here we call them velaryons.''#I like to headcanon thoron true as being one of these declared bastards#it makes sense given the few details we're told about him#in the end he dies trying to save corlys#the house velaryon/house strong relationship is quite fascinating#asoiaf#corlys velaryon#house strong#text
