Felix can make plants grow with a single touch of his hand. All it takes is a bit of contact and then a withered tree will return to life, nutrients will return to the soil around it. The powers of Venus Adepts aren’t restricted to just moving the earth, healing wounds, or creating weapons of life energy. They are masters of the earth, and plantlife is included in that.
On the other hand, Felix’s ability to transform his body into moving sand is a rare gift.
#the golden light of venus; felix#golden sun not having a lot of in depth lore means i get to go ‘my city now’#though yeah you can learn the growth line in the games through djinn assignments but#it’s more fun if venus adepts can do it naturally you know

You sit down with them, taking Felix’s previous place, and look at Chan curiously. “Now I really wanna know how the two of you met. Felix isn’t usually like this.”
“I wasn’t either,” Chan giggles softly and rubs his face. “Fine, but I won’t tell you all the details,” he giggles, thinking back to the night he met Felix.
Four years ago
Chan watches the newly wedded couple in front of him, keeping up the fake smile he has been wearing for hours. Minho smiles brightly, kissing Jisung for the hundredth time tonight, and pulls him in close as they sway across the dance floor. The golden ring on his hand shines brightly beneath the lights, and so do those beautiful brown eyes he fell in love with all these years ago.
Minho's happiness is his top priority, especially after those last couple of years. Chan stopped counting the nights Minho clung to him in feverish nightmares, searching for him to hold him when he felt like falling apart. Now he's happy with someone else. It shouldn't matter. It should be enough to see him smile again, to be so purely in love and finally feel at peace. It should be, but it isn't.
Chan's heart breaks with every kiss he watches. It shatters with every loving gaze Minho gifts to Jisung and not him. Hearing them exchanging vows and tying the knot was by far the worst moment of his life since he lost his parents. He takes another sip of his drink and presses his lips together tightly, getting a little emotional. He needs to get out of here. Chan pushes himself off his chair and grabs the keys to his motorcycle.
"Channie, hyung," Minho's soft voice stops him, and turning around, he can see them coming toward him. "You're leaving already?"
"I'm not feeling so well, I'm sorry, Min," he lies smoothly.
"Oh no, what's wrong?" he asks worriedly, eyes scanning his body for possible signs of discomfort.
"Nothing, I'll be fine," he waves him off.
"Chan," Minho frowns at him.
"Min, sweetie," Jisung chimes in gently. "Let him go if he needs to rest, you have enough other bodyguards around."
"Yeah, but this is my best friend," Minho argues softly, not knowing how hurtful those two little words are for Chan. Jisung gives him a meaningful glance before excusing himself to go and talk to a friend of his. Minho gives him a quick kiss, and Chan is gone when he turns back around.
Chan races down the stairs of the wedding venue Minho rented and blindly fumbles for his keys as tears burn in his eyes. He reaches his bike and grabs his helmet, hands shaking as he unclasps it.
"Chan!" Minho calls out for him, rushing down the stairs and coming to a halt in front of him. He frowns seeing the tears in his eyes. "Oh, Channie, that bad?" he asks worriedly.
"I'm just feeling really sick right now, that's all," he says quietly, lowering his gaze to the floor.
"Let me drive you home then," he suggests.
"Min, this is your wedding," he argues. "You can't just vanish."
"I can do whatever I want," he snorts.
"Wouldn't be fair to him, would it?" he asks, and Minho's smile falters.
"He'd get it. You're my best friend, and if you feel like shit, it's my responsibility to take care of you."
"No, Minnie, it's my responsibility to take care of you. You're supposed to be in there with your husband-" he chokes on the word and swallows hard.
Minho gently grabs his hand, his ring burning against Chan's skin. "Channie, dear," he says softly. "I just…be careful, okay?"
"Of course," he nods quickly.
"Promise me," Minho asks gently.
"Min," Chan sighs, finally wanting to get away from this.
"Promise me you'll be careful. I couldn't handle it if something happened to you," he says, the grip around his hand growing stronger.
"I promise I'll be fine," he says, carefully easing his hand out of Minho's. He looks up and smiles at him bravely. "Go and have fun, alright?" he asks, and Minho nods hesitantly, searching his eyes.
He watches him climbing onto his bike and grabbing the helmet. He can tell something is very wrong, and he doubts it's what Chan says it is. Chan wouldn't leave his side because of that, he never does. "I love you, you know that right?" he asks timidly, and Chan freezes in his movements for a short moment.
"I love you," Chan answers just as timidly, and his gaze softens a little, meeting Minho's wide, confused eyes. "You look beautiful," he tells him gently, and Minho blushes almost instantly. "Thank you," he whispers.
"Come here," Chan sighs, and Minho steps closer. He hugs him tight and smiles as Minho holds onto him firmly. "You're doing great. I'm proud of you, Minnie," he says softly.
Minho's hold on him tightens. "Please don't go?"
Chan pulls back, cupping his cheek out of reflex. "You'll be fine."
"I feel safer when you're here," he confesses anxiously.
Chan shakes his head firmly, leaning in and planting a short, light kiss on his forehead. "You'll be fine," he whispers, and pulling back, there are tears burning in his eyes all over again.
Minho watches him, stunned, as he puts on the helmet and grabs his keys. "I'll see you tomorrow?"
"Of course," he promises, putting on his gloves.
"It's you and me against the world, right?" he asks timidly.
Chan feels like laughing at that. Minho just got married to Jisung but still thinks it's them against the rest. "Always, kitten," he says softly before starting the engine.
Minho stands still for a moment as Chan races off and nervously fidgets with his suit. He wonders if Chan would be alright and get home safely. Minho flinches softly as someone wraps their arms around him, hand resting on his chest.
"Hey there," Jisung says gently, kissing his cheek. "You're alright?"
"Yeah, I'll be fine," he nods and squeezes his hand, leaning back into him.
"He'll be okay," he tells him soothingly.
"I'm not sure this time," Minho shakes his head, deep in thought.
"He always is, he has to. He'd never leave you here if he didn't think you'd be safe," he points out, and Minho hums agreeingly. "Come on now, we have a party to celebrate," he says, gently pulling him with him.
-
Chan blinks away his tears, racing down the streets rather aimlessly. He doesn't want to go back home yet, he'll feel even lonelier in that big house without Min there. He has no other place to go, though. His parents are gone, there aren't any siblings, and Minho is all he had his whole life. The only constant variable in his life got ripped away for good. The safe house is over an hour away and full of memories. He can't escape it.
Chan speeds up a little, the wind pulling at his jacket, but he doesn't care. He'll just keep on driving all night and stay away from home for a bit. He notices the red light too late and curses to himself softly, that could've gone very wrong.
A loud siren behind him startles him a little, and glancing back through his mirror, he notices a police car getting closer. "Oh, for fucks sake," he curses and stops at the side of the road.
Felix parks behind him and hops out of the car. "That fucker really got some nerves," he whispers to himself, making his way over. "Excuse me, Sir, you-" he starts and loses track of his thoughts as the guy takes off his helmet. He meets a pair of soft and incredibly sad chocolate orbs he feels like he could drown in if he maintains eye contact for too long. Dark curls frame his face effortlessly, and god, those full lips. A quick glance down his body makes him suspect he's quite fit, and Felix scolds himself for getting all dreamy about a member of the mafia. It must be him.
"Yes, officer?" he asks patiently, resting the helmet on his thigh.
"You, uhm, you were speeding. And you ignored a red light," he tells him, frowning softly at his amused expression.
"I'm aware of that, thank you," he nods.
"That's not a kind reminder," Felix protests softly. "I just pulled you over because -."
"I don't get pulled over," Chan says calmly, and judging by Felix's stunned expression, he has no clue who he's talking to. "Ever heard of Minho Lee?"
Felix's eyes widen and he nods quickly. "Yeah, I did."
"Well, guess what, I'm pretty important to him. So remember this," he says, vaguely waving at himself and the motorcycle. "And don't pull me over again."
"I don't think I can-" he stammers.
Chan sighs heavily and reaches out for him, pushing aside his jacket gently to check the name tag. "Great, another fucking Lee who's ruining my day."
"You ruined that by yourself, Sir. I just reminded you of the law," Felix frowns, almost a little offended.
"The law's debatable," Chan shrugs and squints his eyes at him. He takes in the sight of him in his uniform and has to bite back a smirk, meeting his very confused brown eyes. Dark hair falls around his face, highlighting the freckles on it. He looks cute. " You're new here, aren't you?"
"Actually, I've been living here for my whole-."
"At the police force, darling," Chan huffs, and Felix's eyes widen, a soft blush creeping up his neck. Oh.
"I'm-Yes, I'm new," he nods quickly.
"I can tell," he says and smiles at him fondly. "Still so eager to do things right."
"We should," Felix nods quickly, subconsciously straightening his uniform.
"But they don't. And you won't if you want to survive this job," he nods thoughtfully. "You'll notice soon enough. Try staying away from Han's men, they're horrible to cops."
"Okay," he nods, wondering why the hell he is listening to this crap. "Sir, are you drunk?" he asks after a moment of silence.
Chan laughs out loud, and it's the first time today. "I'm not joking, stay away from the Han family. They're dangerous. It'd be a shame if they'd mess up that pretty face of yours," he says, and Felix's blush deepens. "But to answer your question, yes, I had a little too much."
"Then that's another reason you shouldn't be driving," Felix points out kindly.
"I have to get home somehow," he shrugs, staring up at the sky, slowly changing colors as the sun begins to set.
"You have no one to pick you up?" he asks, feeling pity for him.
"My best friend got married to another guy today. I have no one else," he tells him, not really sure why the fuck he'd be telling that to some random police officer.
"That's why you're drunk and driving so reckless," he hums understandingly. "You're heartbroken, aren't you?"
"What if I was?" he asks and watches him observantly. His brown hair shines beneath the setting sun, eyes sparkle beautifully. Chan can't help but think again about how effortlessly beautiful Officer Lee is.
"Then I'd feel sorry for pulling you over…but on second thought, not really. There's no use putting yourself at risk because someone hasn't found you fitting for themselves," he says very gently, observing Chan's eyes. "Maybe you're not the right person for him, but I'm sure you'll find your missing piece one day."
"Well, thanks for the advice, Officer Lee," he snorts and once more checks him out. Oh, fuck it. "When does your shift end tonight?"
Felix glances at his watch. "In five minutes," he tells him.
"May I take you out for dinner after? Make up for the trouble I caused you?" he asks smoothly, and Felix's eyes widen before he gathers himself quickly again.
"Purely that?" he asks, and Chan raises his eyebrow at him.
"You're bolder than you look," he smirks. "Not really, no."
"Well, then skip the politeness and take what you so clearly want," Felix announces, not without blushing heavily.
Chan sees right through him and nods to himself. "If you let me," he nods reluctantly.
"Please," Felix nods, growing a bit shy. He crosses his arms behind his chest to hide his hands shaking.
Chan looks at him, amused. "I don't know if you're naive or touch starved to get into bed with some stranger, but I'll take it."
"I know very well who you are, Mr. Bahng," he says, and surprise flashes in Chan's eyes. "You're the head bodyguard of Mr. Lee, and that best friend you've been talking about is the very same person. You're in love with your boss."
"Huh," Chan laughs stunned. "And that doesn't stop you from climbing into bed with me?"
"That's what makes it exciting," he corrects him, and Chan smirks.
"I believe your five minutes are over, dear," he says calmly, and Felix hums softly. "Keep up, alright?" he asks, putting his helmet back on.
"You bet," he grins.
-
Felix gets onto the motorcycle behind him, wrapping his arms around him to steady himself. They decided to park the car back at the police station to avoid raising suspicions, and Chan kept his helmet on as Felix did.
"Hold on tight," Chan tells him, and Felix hums, agreeing. He starts the engine and drives off with him. He knows Minho would be pissed knowing he brought a police officer back home, but he couldn't care less. He just wanted to forget and feel good for a night.
Chan soon parks in front of the mansion and hops off his bike, taking off his helmet. Felix does as well and smiles at him shyly. "Come on in," Chan chuckles and leads the way.
Felix follows him through the front door, looking around curiously. Chan takes the helmet from him and puts it aside, reaching into a small closet drawer next to the door. He pulls out a piece of soft silk and gives him an apologetic smile. "He'd kill me if I'd led you through the house with your eyes open."
"Oh, okay," Felix nods gently, swallowing nervously as Chan steps closer. Their eyes meet, and sparks ignite between them. "Can I kiss you?" he asks politely.
Chan chuckles softly and cups his face, pulling him into a gentle kiss. A soft sound escapes Felix's lips, and he grips Chan's suit jacket, pulling him close. Chan's arm snakes around his waist, and he lets him enjoy that feeling. It has been years since he kissed someone and he only realizes now how much he had missed it.
Felix takes a few steps back, pulling him with him until his back hits the wall. Chan braces himself on the wall, caging him in, and the moment Felix parts his lips to catch his breath, Chan's tongue slides into his mouth. A low groan escapes him as their tongues slide against each other sensually. He reaches up, burying his hand in those thick curls and arches into him. Chan's playing with his hair, pulling at it as he deepens the kiss.
Neither of them notice the front door opening until someone clears their throat. "Channie?"
Chan flinches heavily and pulls back panting, turning to look at him. Minho stands there, still in his wedding suit, and watches him with wide eyes. "Min, you're back already?"
Felix connects the dots and realizes the man in front of them is Minho Lee, one of the most important people in town.
"I-uh, I came to check on you, but you seem to feel fine again," he says, nodding slowly. He looks a little hurt, realizing Chan hasn't felt sick. "So you're…you're not feeling sick?"
"Not anymore," Chan answers, and he isn't even lying. He hasn't been feeling exactly well the whole day, watching the love of his life marrying another man.
"Mhm, okay," Minho nods quietly before his eyes fall onto Felix. "And that is?"
Felix bows gently before him, dark messed-up hair falling into his face. "I'm Officer Felix Lee, Sir," he introduces himself. "It's an honor to meet you."
Minho frowns at him softly. "Not really, there's nothing special about me other than my mother's legacy," he says and looks back at Chan. "Why are you bringing a police officer back home without my permission?"
"Since when am I asking for permission?" Chan gives back and glances at Felix. "Felix and I just met, we've decided to have some fun tonight."
Felix smiles at the way his name rolls off his tongue. "You can cover my eyes now, by the way," he chimes in gently. "I've probably seen too much already."
Chan smiles softly and nods, pulling the silk from his pocket. He steps behind him and soothingly squeezes his shoulder. "Close your eyes, pretty," he says and locks eyes with Minho as he covers Felix's eyes. "Don't you have a husband to get back to?" he asks, more coldly than he intended to.
"I-I guess I do," he nods, not fully understanding why his heart hurts and his stomach cramps with jealousy as he watches Felix. He just got married; for fucks sake, why is he so focused on Chan? "We'll talk about this later, Chan."
"Nothing to talk about, you won't do much different tonight," he shrugs and wraps his arm around Felix's waist, pulling him in. Felix leans back into him, breath hitching as Chan places a kiss just below his ear.
"Why?" Minho asks, barely audibly pointing at Felix. "You're usually not like that."
"You broke my heart, that's why," he says, and Minho's face falls. "It's nothing new, and I won't stand in your way if you're happy with him. But let me deal with my side of emotions the way I prefer."
"I-I'm sorry," he whispers, tears brimming his eyes.
"No, you're not," Chan says quietly. "Because you don't have to." He steps in front of Felix and lifts him up after a gentle warning.
Felix wraps his legs around his waist, arms around his neck, and nudges his nose against Chan's clumsily. He leans to his ear as he plays with the base of his hair. "Need you so bad, Channie hyung," he whispers, not seeing the beautiful smile breaking across Chan's face.
"Don't worry, sunshine, I got you," he gives back lowly and exchanges a last glance with Minho before carrying Felix up the stairs.
"But I am sorry," Minho whispers to himself, anxiously fidgeting with the sleeves of his suit. His chest tightens a little, and he sucks in a sharp breath. He never wanted to hurt Chan like that. Never. Had he been faking to be happy for him for years now?
-
Chan gently sets Felix down as they reach the corridor to his room, taking the fabric from his eyes. Felix's soft eyes flutter open and meet his. "No wonder you fell for him, he's incredibly handsome up close," Felix states, making Chan chuckle, surprised.
"Stop talking about Min, alright?" he asks gently and cups his face. "He's not important tonight."
Felix nods kindly and fondles down his sides almost hesitantly. "Where's your room?"
"Just over there." Chan gently caresses his cheeks and pulls him into a kiss. Felix's hands rest on his hips as he kisses back fiercely. They get lost in the feeling for another bit before Chan takes the lead and walks them to his room, never breaking apart. Chan kicks the door closed behind them and turns the key, trapping Felix between the door and his body.
"Can I?" Felix asks, reaching for Chan's suit jacket. Chan hums gently, and Felix brushes the jacket off his shoulders, locking eyes with him as he starts opening the buttons of his shirt. Felix hesitantly lets his hands roam his skin once he's done and bites his lower lip hard at the thought of the rest of him. "Fuck," he breathes out, a little stunned, as Chan grabs his neck and pulls him in again.
Chan pushes his thigh between his legs, smirking as Felix's jaw drops. "Feels good, pretty boy?"
"Uhuh," Felix nods dumbly, pressing down against him needily.
"Go on," he encourages him and reaches for the first button of his uniform. "I'll start taking that off for you while you do."
Felix doesn't need a second invitation, grinding down against his thigh with a low groan. He watches as Chan unbuttons his uniform and shivers with need as Chan's fingers brush against his bare skin in the process.
Chan notices and glances at him curiously. "You haven't been touched in a while, have you?"
"Not really," he confesses, blushing heavily. "It's a bit of a weakness of mine," he adds, glancing at him through his lashes.
"How much time do you have?" Chan asks, and Felix swallows audibly.
"For you, all night," he breathes out.
Chan hums softly and picks him up, carrying him to his bed. He lowers Felix into the pillows and climbs onto the bed, hovering over him. "May I make up for the time you missed then?"
"Please do," Felix nods shyly. He watches with interest as Chan gets comfortable between his legs, bracing himself next to his head. His lips plant tiny kisses down his jaw before they land on his neck. Felix melts into the sheets beneath him as Chan starts kissing his neck, leaving small bites all over it, slowly moving down to his collarbone. Sinking his hand into his curls, he whines softly as Chan's lips travel further, tongue lapping at his nipples.
Chan has no idea how long he stays like that, exploring Felix's body with his tongue, teeth, lips, and hands. The man beneath him writhes in the sheets, soft, helpless sounds tumbling from his lips. Chan's face is buried between his thighs by now, having worked up his way both of his legs. Felix's body is littered with reddish marks by now and covered in sweat, worked up from Chan's pleasurable touches. Looking up, he smiles at the sight of him. His dark hair sticks to his face, brown eyes blown with lust, lips swollen and parted. "Enjoying yourself, pretty?"
Felix hums, agreeing, and bites his lip hard as Chan gently eases off his boxers. His head falls back as Chan teasingly licks up his shaft and massages his balls with his hand. "Ch-Chan," he chokes out.
"Get on your hands and knees for me, will you?" he asks, and Felix nods, eager to please him and finally get what he wants. Felix turns around, knees buckling a little. Chan reaches for his bedside table, grabbing a bottle of lube and some condoms for later. He spreads Felix's cheeks with his fingers and licks up between them. A guttural moan falls from Felix's lips at that, pushing back the moment Chan's tongue pushes against his hole. Chan switches between tongue and fingers, working him open slowly. Felix's arms collapse as he locates his prostate, and Chan bites back a moan at the weak sound leaving his lips.
"Channie - stop," he pleads quietly, face buried in the pillow. "Fuck, please," he whimpers.
"What's wrong?" he asks, fingertips brushing against his prostate once again.
"I'm gonna-" Felix squeezes his eyes shut, body shaking as Chan massages his prostate so perfectly. It's too much. Too much after all those teasing and loving touches before, too much after being touched so right after all this time. Felix's body tenses up, and he releases into the sheets beneath him with a weak sound. His face flushes red with embarrassment, and he hides in the pillow. "Fuck, sorry."
Chan leans down, kissing his spine, and shakes his head. "Nothing to be sorry for."
Felix frowns softly and peaks at him timidly. "But I came without asking for permission."
Chan blinks at him, heart melting at the sincere apologetic look on Felix's face. "I told you I'd make up for that time you missed. I wanted you to feel that good."
Felix's blush deepens. "So you're not mad?"
"No," he tells him with a kind smile, and Felix's heart melts. That's a new one.
"I think I'm ready for you now," he tells him with a sheepish smile. "Can I take care of you now?"
"Okay," Chan nods gently and lets Felix guide him onto his back. He watches him curiously as Felix straddles his lap, eyes fluttering as Felix wraps his hand around his so far untouched dick. Felix flicks his thumb over the tip and strokes him a few times before handing him the condom. Once Chan is ready, he pours some lube into his hand, stroking Chan once again and getting into position. Chan's face contorts in pleasure as Felix slowly sinks down on him.
Felix braces himself on his chest, moaning softly as he tries to adjust to his size. He experimentally moves his hips and allows himself to relax and sink down deeper. "Feel so fucking full already," he groans deliciously.
Chan moans, relieved once he's buried fully inside of him, and rests his hands on his hips. "You're okay?" he asks, watching Felix observantly.
"Yeah," he nods, panting a little. "Just need a moment."
"Take your time," he says gently, rubbing his hips soothingly.
"Okay," Felix says to himself, lifting his hips and sinking back down on him after a moment. They both moan at the movement, and Felix repeats it, Chan's hips meeting his this time. He braces himself on his chest and works out a rhythm that feels good for them both. Felix moves eagerly on top of him, moans falling freely from his mouth by now.
Chan beneath him has his head thrown back into the pillow, jaw growing slack at the tightness of Felix around him. After all, it's been a while for him too. "Fuck, Felix," he groans softly.
Felix tries to angle his hips a little differently to hit his prostate but doesn't fully succeed. After a few tries, a frustrated whimper leaves his mouth, and Chan glances up at him.
His breath hitches, seeing tears brimming Felix's eyes, and he has to bite back a groan. Wow, he didn't know he had a thing for that. "You're okay, pretty boy?" he asks gently, and Felix shakes his head, whining softly.
"Need more," he admits, and Chan understands, gently patting his hips.
"Let me help," he says reassuringly, and Felix does, letting him angle his hips a little differently. Chan thrusts up into him, and Felix rewards him with a deep, relieved moan, nails digging into his torso. Chan's eyes roll back at the way Felix clenches around him, moaning obscenely loud and shaking on top of him. "Fucks sake," he breathes out, pounding up into him desperately. Felix slams his hips down against him, their moans growing louder. They chase their high together, pushing each other over the edge soon after. Felix collapses against him, and Chan lazily thrusts up into him still, rubbing his back soothingly.
MASTERLISTS | PROMPT LIST | GUIDELINES
After a moment of silence, Felix glances at him with a shy smile. "Again?" Chan kisses him fiercely as an answer, flipping them over in the process. Again.

A pitch for a new Golden Sun game
If you were not aware, the first two Golden Sun games are now available on the Switch. My personal stance is to abstain until an actual new game is made, but to help celebrate, here is a pitch for a new Golden Sun game.
This may be a bit unorthodox, but it would tell the second half of the story, but would radically differ from The Lost Age. And be warned, there are massive spoilers for the first two in this pitch.
Isaac and company battle Saturos and Menardi, but once the Fusion Dragon forms, Felix sneaks up and kills Isaac. The rest of the team kill Felix, but are wiped out by the Dragon. Once they separate, Saturos and Menardi also succumb to the effects of fusion, so they all end up dead as the Venus Lighthouse beacon is fired. Sheba still falls, but does not survive without Felix. Jenna and Kraden are swept away into the ocean and drown. Who does that leave us with?
Alex.
And now a new team is needed. Hamma saw the future and combines forces with this possibly evil manipulator. So Mercury and Jupiter both have an adept on this new team. With no one to prove Piers is innocent, he is executed. The Great Gabomba spirit sees how the jewel came from a now dead man, and tells Akafubu that to atone for the death of the man who owned the jewel he used in the ceremony, Akafubu must take a new test: he must join the quest to become the witch doctor. Now we have a Mars adept.
Briggs made out well from the situation, escaping Alhafra to Champa with the boat, the food, and the money. But when he learns of Piers, Briggs agrees to join the quest to help as a navigator at sea. Maha from Garoh joins as an additional Jupiter support, and you team up with Susa to kill the serpent. Susa joins as your Venus adept.
The group still gets to Lemuria, but with no Piers it gets awkward. Piers uncle goes with you, in defiance of the senate. Second Mercury adept!
Karst and Agatio still appear, but they turn on Alex for letting Saturos and Mendardi die. Fighting ensues? And perhaps Maopa could join. He learns of your quest, and comes along to ensure the power of Anemos would be used wisely. Then parties could be 5 instead of 4 (always with one non-adept; Briggs or Maopa).
Reaching Prox, Karst and Agatio are missing (same fate as The Lost Age). You need help to find them and finish the quest. Puelle becomes your second Mars adept, and upon learning his son has died, Kyle also joins. Yeah, in this version, no parent abduction because their kids are already dead!!!
Now you have 8 adepts, many of whom are severely under-powered non-fighters (Pier's Uncle, Pulle, Kyle) plus two non-adepts susceptible to the elements. And with no Doom Dragon, your final boss?
The Wise One! You are no match, but at a critical moment it is possible for Alex to warp away. Instead, Alex stays and willingly gets wrecked by The Wise One (as is tradition) who then…willingly backs off? The Wise One allows Alex to light the last beacon and heals this united band of misfits. Because The Wise One has seen who they have become on this journey:
-Alex realizing that there is more than power, and he legitimately wants to help Weyard now. -Akafubu becoming a strong leader to his people, worthy of the title of Witch Doctor. -Maha transforming from a hermit to an ambassador for Beastmen across the world, and allowing Beastmen to be open in the world. -Piers' Uncle and Kyle complete what their relatives died trying to do and can return home to honor their memories. -Maopa reestablishes open and good relations between the people of Atteka and Hespiria. -Susa becomes a better equipped leader for Izumo, more capable than just they guy who stabbed an already dying serpent. -Puelle gets better character development, and becomes the actual hero of Prox. -Hamma completes what Ivan was supposed to have done, and can now focus on the return of the Anemos to honor her fallen brother and restore her people's heritage. -Briggs gets booty. Both treasure and Chaucha. He's a pirate, what do you expect? Some things don't change too much.
Everyone gets character growth and the stakes are high since both parties are gone. But all in all it is a satisfying experience, made up by a group even more fragmented and desperate than the Lost Age crew, but just as noble.
Now, obviously this would never happen due to tone alone, but I hope this outline demonstrates not only the interesting possibilities in the scenario of "what would happen if everyone you play as completely died" but also its feasibility as a game. It would follow The Lost Age in terms of geography and would use the same mechanics, but with changes to story and unexpected character moments this would be a unique game. No doubt about it, perhaps a little too unique and controversial.
Of course, even better than this would be a 4th Golden Sun game. So what are you waiting for Camelot?

ch. 16 ~ when all is calm
It was a spontaneous decision. Maybe a little risky as well, but that didn’t stop her.
As soon as she saw the Twitter notification mentioning the time and date for the ticket release, she had immediately made up her mind to attend the fan-meet. By some miracle, when the day for purchase came, she was able to secure a ticket for herself. Well, more accurately, Soo-yun secured a ticket for her. Knowing the cut-throat nature of ticket sales for these things, Sakura had begged her two friends to help her, and they agreed, thinking the group was just her knew obsession. Like her One Direction phase back in middle school, or her Harry Potter phase in high school.
Now, waiting in one of the rows closest to the main stage, she couldn’t stop the excited twitch in her fingers. The venue was filled to the brim; the loud murmur coming off the crowd mixing with the Stray Kids songs playing in a loop through the speakers. Then, the lights dimmed, only brightening once all eight members were standing centre stage for the first song. It was different seeing them in this setting. Sakura had known all along of their vast following, their success in the recent years plastering the octet on every other billboard around the city. Their music filled public spaces, their dances done by performers worldwide. They were global.
But she had been fortunate enough to get to know them outside of the spotlight. The Chan that came to get her in the pouring rain without hesitation. The Lee Know that couldn’t stop laughing at her attempt to replicate their Hellavator routine. The Changbin that teased her when she couldn’t lift the box full of groceries in Jeju. The Hyunjin that sat with her in the sand as she cried. The Jisung that curled against her lap whenever stories were told. The Felix that offered to teach his secret brownie recipe when the smell alone had caused her to drool. The Seungmin that tugged on her ponytail every chance her got, but glared protectively if any of the other members tried it. The Jeongin that was quick to offer up a jacket of his that she had complimented, only settling when Sakura told him that he could help her pick out one of her own at the store. The eight boys that were stars to the world, but just boys to her. Friends. Almost family. And one, almost more.
After the first few songs ended, lights flooded the stage to give the audience a clear view of the group clad in shades of pink. Sakura screamed loudly with the fans around her, bouncing on the balls of her feet as the eight members introduced themselves on the platform in front of her.
As Hyunjin began introducing himself, the screams increased, causing her to jump. Sakura wasn’t sure whether or not it was the sudden movement that jarred his attention, but her eyes met that of the youngest seconds after. He needed no time to recognize the girl smiling up at him, a new sparkle in his eyes as he moved closer to the Aussie besides him. Raising zero suspicion, Jeongin rested his chin on the shoulder of his leader, momentarily whispering something into his reddening ear. He remained in place for a minute, nodding along to the other member’s dialog. When he finally moved away to do his own bit, Sakura watched Chan’s head turn to look over the crowd, gaze jumping around lazily before dropping to where he knew that she was. The eye contact lasted for a single heartbeat, but it was impossible to miss the giddy smile that formed on his lips when he turned back towards his members.
Surprised didn’t even begin to cover what the leader felt looking into the sea of fans and seeing her golden eyes staring back at him, cheeks full and tight as she smiled up at him. She hand was wrapped around the handle of a fan, his face printed on the side facing him. Chan couldn’t stop the blush that tinted his ears at the sight. The youngest member was quick to notice this, nudging the older boy teasingly before hopping out of the way of his hand before he could be knocked. Some of the other members shot them confused looks, only to have their eyes fill with realization as they too spotted Sakura one at a time.
The rest of the show was littered with small pokes and playful comments towards the leader, everyone else oblivious to what was going on. More songs were performed, and one cover – in which Chan decided that the perfect way to get back at the sly girl was to lift his shirt a little higher than what was originally planned. Much to his delight, her face flushed immediately. He had to cover up his laugh as she rushed to cover her face with her fan, shy eyes peeking out over the top when it was finally safe to look. Pink outfits became black, and soon they were bidding their farewells to the crowd. Each member was sure to send a wave in Sakura’s general direction before leaving the stage.
On her way out, the girl felt her phone vibrate in the pocket of her coat.
>> Chan: You’re a menace, petal.
She grinned, eagerly typing back.
>> Sakura: Surprise?
>> Chan: Meet you at the river?
>> Sakura: Always, I’ll be waiting
<3 <3 <3
The silent night was suddenly interrupted by the sound of shoes hitting the ground repeatedly, like running. In the moment that it took for Sakura to turn toward the noise, she just managed to catch sight of the boy before she was swept up into his arms. She screamed, wrapping her arms around his neck immediately as he laughed into her shoulder. However, the boy failed to stop. Another shout left the girl as she felt them fall, with Chan’s foot slipping on the damp grass beneath them. He fell back, with Sakura landing gracelessly on top of him, unintentionally slamming her forehead into his chin. Chan groaned, head falling back into the grass as he rubbed his aching face.
“Shit, are you okay?” Sakura asked him, most of her words muffled by the laughter tearing through her small frame. Her hands grasped his face, a gentle thumb smoothing over the area of impact when his hand dropped to her waist.
“No, your big head broke my face,” he whined, both eyes closed dramatically. He felt something hit his forehead, eyes opening right away to see her retreating hand.
“Did you just flick me?” Chan asked in mock disbelief.
“Do you have evidence to prove that statement, Mr Bang?”
Chan twisted underneath her, throwing all his weight to one side so that she toppled over onto the ground besides him. He wasted no time in rolling with her, hovering over her stunned person with a sly smirk forming on his face.
“If you’re thinking of tickling an apology out of me, you are surely mistaken. I happen to be immune to such antics,” she said smugly, her tongue poking out childishly from between pink lips. Her claims didn’t stop him. Chan’s hands reached out, fingers tickling her sides. Unfortunately for him, the girl stayed completely still, her ‘I-told-you-so’ grin only growing as he continued to try and fail. He huffed, admitting his defeat in silence as his arms folded over his chest meekly.
While the win was sweet, she could take him seriously with his bottom lip stuck out in a pout. So, with a cute smile, Sakura sat up slightly to meet him, lips pressing against his chin in an apologetic kiss. “Better?”
The man’s eyes lit up. “You know, now that I think about it, you knocked into my lips too.” His lips puckered playfully, causing her to laugh. She pinched his side, earning a small yelp from Chan. She may have been immune to his attacks, but he sides were unguarded and sensitive under her fingers. He giggled, swatting her hands away like they were flies on a summer day. This only caused her to laugh harder.
“You’re a menace, petal,” he whispered against her check before laying down beside her. He then stretched out, sliding one arm under her head and the other over her waist, pulling her closer until his face rested in the nook of her neck. Chan inhaled deeply, the scent of spearmint making his head swim. She smelled like mornings without an alarm after long nights. He relaxed into her, his body molding to perfectly fit against hers as her hand brushed through his hair the way it always did.
Sakura turned her head slightly, brushing an affectionate kiss to Chan’s cheek, right where his dimple sat, as she asked, “Were you surprised?” She felt the boy nod, the tip of his nose tickling her neck as he did. He placed an open-mouthed kiss to the hollow of her neck, resulting in a soft sigh on her end. He did it a second time, this time a little higher, and continued until he reached her ear.
“Do you know how hard it was not to stare at you and only you the entire time I was up there? How difficult it was to interact with you like any other person when I have the taste of your skin burnt into my memory? It was hard as fuck, Sakura.”
The girl next to him giggled. With a teasing tone, she questioned, “It was hard?”
Chan nipped at her jugular. “I was referring to the situation, you pervert.”
Looking down, she could see the slight embarrassed tint to his cheeks from her comment. He’s adorable. So, she rolled over slightly, wrapping her arm tightly around his torso before burying her head in his warm chest.
“You’re soft,” she mumbled, tightening her hold on him for a second before completely relaxing in his embrace.
Chan snorted. “I always knew you only liked me for my body.”
“Who said I liked you to start with?”
“Oh, so that’s how you’re going to play? Fine, lay on the cold grass then,” he sulked, wiggling around trying to get out of her grip. Not that he was trying very hard. His heart squeezed when he felt her arms hold onto him tighter, one leg thrown over his own to prevent his escape.
A whiney ‘no’ was heard from her, but Chan continued to squirm around beneath her. That was, until he felt a sharp pain in his chest. Chan froze, and he felt Sakura freeze against him as well. He looked down at her, only to be met with a guilty face red in a blush from ear to ear. The gears in his head turned.
“Did you just-“
“Nope.”
“You liar! You did!”
“I didn’t!”
“You just bit me!”
“Well, would you look at the time, I should get home. Bye.”
Sakura wasn’t even able to roll a millimetre away before two arms looped around her waist and pulled her back until her upper half was lying flat on him. His hold was tight, and Sakura had to accept that she would not be escaping any time soon. She was screwed. Looking anywhere but down at the eyes burning into her, she felt Chan’s fingers fiddle with the hem of her sweatshirt. The graze of a single digit along her burning skin underneath had her shivering in his arms.
“Now, care to explain why you decided to bite me, petal?”
Trying to ignore the fingers trailing up her spine and the cold air lapping at the exposed skin of her back, she shook her head. She felt the vibrations ripple through his firm chest beneath her as he hummed.
“Well then, it’s only fair that I get to do the same, right?” The suggestion was enough to pull her eyes to his, an amused expression covering his face.
“You are not biting me, Christopher.”
“But you just bit me,” he shot back, eyes drifting to her chest momentarily before meeting her burning eyes once more. “If I don’t get an explanation then surely it’s only fair that I get to do the same to even things out.” His eyes drifted again. Chan didn’t even try to hide it this time, his ears no doubt a bright shade of pink the longer his gaze lingered. Sakura gasped.
“No!”
“Then explain!”
“It’s not my fault your chest is more bitable!”
Another flicker. “I mean-“
“Stop looking at my chest!”
“Then stop looking at mine!”
Sakura fell silent for a single second, in which her eyes dropped back down to his chest. “Never mind, you can look.” Chan barked out a laugh. Slipping one hand out from beneath her shirt, he grasped her chin and pulled her down to meet him in a kiss. They had found themselves in their own bubble once again, absorbed in the comforting company of the other.
If only they could hear the stars warning them of what was to come.

THIS IS ANGST!!!!!! Jdjsjdhwjdh plus word vomit i just wanna get this out of my system
Gold trim, Fancy wine and the smell of arrogance in the air floated onto a big room of elite people whom had their heels on the dance floor sweeping themselves to the music of violin.
It's the winter ball for the finest people, in a manor the known escell mirun and florian aguis lived.
Felix as the only son of the hosts, weren't as delighted to attend such lavish events but he stood in the ballroom full of unfamiliar faces feeling yet kinda out of place.
women and men from high born families are offering him a dance, trying to win him as if it was a competition on who's going to take him by the hands.
"Good grief, this is the last straw I'm getting out of here" The lad said to himself, feeling the presence of the nobles highly overwhelming
He took a deep breath as he strides out of the venue to take a fresh breath of air, away from the these people whom named elite but never even once he saw someone who caught his eyes.
as he walks away from the loud music, he helped himself by having him welcomed to florian's garden, it was the place which he always saw intriguing and looking at the plants his father took care of will always be enough to take him out of the royalty chaos.
the moon beams down strongly this night, and as he moves forward he caught his gaze onto you, who slightly jumped due to his presence.
"HI!"
the moment then suddenly turned magical for his sight, he thought he never saw you around nor have been familiar by your presence but one thing was for sure you had him captivated.
he admired you in which seemed to me a split second but in his eyes everything went in slow motion.
'I'll never forget the first time I saw your face I have never been the same, Intelligent eyes in a hunger-pang frame and when you said "Hi", I forgot my dang name set my heart aflame, every part aflame'
This is not a game'
"weren't you supposed in the ballroom?" despite being stunned intimidating words came out of his mouth 'fuck' he muttered to himself as he slightly bit his bottom lip in unreadable embarrassment
"Sorry i really don't know if i wasn't supposed to be here but these nerium oleander caught my attention" You said with the most apologetic voice ever but keeping yourself away from the flower
"You know about them?" he asked very surprised, it was a flower which can only be identified for those who knew what it is capable of.
"Oh i do!! I'm just surprised to find them here
they are very rare and is one of the most poisonous flowers found existing i just never knew I'd found them in this place" You gave him a gentle smile as you fixed your posture, offering him a handshake
he took you by your hands, he was as breath taking as he looked he gently shook your palm as he introduced himself
"My name is felix escellun"
"Y/n" you replied
"I never really saw you around here, where's your family from?" He asked as he wondered from what royal's you belonged to.
"I'm just a messenger from one of those families in the ballroom, i never really seemed fit to be there but they still took me here. But that's unimportant when i become one of the greatest warriors in this place, I'll make a name for myself!" You said with a glistening sparkle on your eyes, and hunger ready to take on everything
'So this is what it feels like to match wits with someone at your level, What the hell is the catch?
It's the feeling of freedom, of seein' the light It's Ben Franklin with a key and a kite You see it, right? '
your conversations lasted in long minutes, both fascinated by the things you shared to each other the way you were both unsatisfied and wanted more in life, more than what everyone tell you to be.
you have the same outlook in life, the same want for change everything was said equal agreement as if harmony existed when both of you met.
the conversations went sweeter as the moments pass by, you were subtly flirting and though he pretends not be affected his cheeks say otherwise. The comfort is amazing, it was like everything is meant to be there.
felix observers your features attentively, how you thumb away your hair carefully and way your voice change as you speak of the things you love truly.
if only he could take you away from the place you're in, far away from everyone to protect you just because you deserve it and he'll be happy to see you fluttering your wings and fly.
"You really have a wonderful home! I felt like romeo and juliet somehow met here as their love story was told" You said all, cheery with your cheeks touching your eyes as you smiled.
"Maybe ours could start here too"
you said with a slight blush on your face, you knew it was an embarrassing line but you took your shot anyways.
"Page one opened" Felix replied with a smile ghosting his lips, he felt like it was too good to be true but his feelings lingered, it was his first time meeting you but you took him places he's never been before through all the things you've made him feel in one night.
He decided to take you inside of the hall, hands intertwined together as he offered you a dance it you were both having a great time, and familiar figure walked by the two of you and greeted
"Who is this person felix? they're ethereal"
Scylla, His sister said, her stance was elegant and everything about her is of finest goods.
Felix saw a different glow onto his sister's face, something he never saw before.
"This Y/N, Y/N this Scylla my sister"
"Sister? You're just as majestic scylla! if It takes being in a war for us to meet then it would've been worth it" You complimented.
"I don't wanna be rude to my brother here, but would you mind if i take them for a small dance!?" Scylla smiled with a sly smile on her face
'this one's mine' she whispers, but felix gave an annoyed snort in disbelief
'you wish scylla'
Despite the small banter, felix lets you dance with her sister who took a liking to you
it was a wonderful night but he realizes the most important things throughout the night.
it was already time for you to go, He kissed you knuckles goodbye as he looked at you
"We'll meet again that's for sure" felix smiled as you wave him goodbye
"I'll be back here again!"
A year has passed and crowds cheered onto the moonlight, fancy decorations painted same the tall walls where the ball once happened, golden trims of fabric greeted the newly weded couple whomst hold the most genuine smiles on their face.
familiar faces flooded the ball room, eyes all fixated to the stars of the night, it's finally time to reminisce how sweet their first meet was, and as the visitors applauded sage lesath stirred up the crowd to welcome another important guest
"Alright, alright
That's what I'm talkin' about
Now, everyone give it up for the maid of honor
Felix Escellun"
The crowd shouted louder through his presence, hands clapping and glasses clinking in celebration, Felix smiled as he raised a wine glass on his left hand.
"A toast to the newly wedded partners from a brother who's happy for the union and hope you provide!"
he smiles yet the hint of bitterness tickled his cheeks, he looked onto your eyes with regrets but it was masked up with his facade
"I've never seen scylla with such passion in her eyes before you, you bring the best of my sister i knew she'd be right for you. Writing the first letter for both of you to bond deeper is something i never regret doing"
"May you two always be satisfied"
His gray eyes then sparkled with tears ready to gush down any moment from now, not because of joy but for the choice he made, To let his sisyer be happy, and let you go onto her arms now as her wedded partner.
It was the hard choice to make, the jealousy in his heart tugs as he fantasize how would it have been if he just didn't give you up, but he knew scylla has never been this genuinely happy even once in her life before you.
everything flashes on the back of his mind, his responsibilities as the heir, and everything in his shoulders he wanted you, he really did
and this is the only way he could have you in his sight.
'and i will never be satisfied'
THIS IS THE MOST PAINFUL SHIT I'VE WRITTEN I'M- KSHSISHDUW I CANNOT THIS WILL HAVE A PART TWO FOR REDEMPTION!!! I'M CRYING

United in Song
okay so this has been in my drafts for I don’t even know how long and I’m tired of it sitting there collecting dust, so please enjoy this fluffy 3H platonic one-shot.
/////
If there was one thing Dorothea missed about the opera, it was the audience. There was a certain kind of thrill that came with standing on the stage, staring out into the darkened crowd while the music swelled beneath her voice and feeling their tension, knowing that they held their collective breaths in anticipation, in wonder of her song…there was nothing else quite like it, in her experience. And while she didn’t really want to go back to that life of endless practices and performances, of cutthroat rivalries and patrons as dangerous as they were wealthy, she felt a little pang standing in the Garreg Mach cathedral, singing her heart out for absolutely no one.
Well, no, that wasn’t quite true. The monastery choir had finally gotten a few more members, and as the nun in charge dismissed them for the day, Annette and Hilda hurried over before she could wander off. “Wow, Dorothea! You were really amazing!!” the little redhead gushed.
“Aw, thanks, Annie,” Dorothea giggled, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear. “You were both great, too!”
“You’re so sweet,” Hilda smiled. “But we couldn’t hold a candle to you! Your voice was so beautiful -- and I swear, it filled the whole cathedral.”
Well, that might explain all the sharp looks and decrescendo gestures she’d been getting from the director.
“It’s really a shame nobody else was around to hear,” Annette sighed.
“I know exactly what you mean.” Dorothea scanned the rows of empty pews as they walked toward the doors, feeling again that ache of longing. Even when they did get to stand before an audience, something told her they would just be the choral lead to a devotional hymn for some religious service or another. “Sometimes I really wish we could just…go out and perform, you know? Show off a little, hear the applause…”
“…well, why couldn’t we?”
Dorothea paused at the top of the steps, reeling her mind back from another stage dream to focus on Hilda. “I didn’t think they did that here.”
“Not that I’ve seen. Or heard about,” Annette agreed.
“So why not do something about it?” Hilda asked. “Put on a musical performance! There’s lots of places that would work, like the lawn outside the classrooms, or the walk along the dormitories…”
“Would that really bring in an audience, though?” Annette pointed out. “Back in Fhirdiad you’d see performers doing shows on street corners, but they never really drew crowds or anything.”
“And wouldn’t it be nice to have a real stage, and a real audience?” Dorothea sighed. It was a quiet walk across the bridge to the monastery…and the whole way, she just kept turning Hilda’s suggestion over and over. It really would be nice to have an opportunity to perform…maybe she could ask Professor Manuela about it--
“This is it!!”
Dorothea jumped at Annette’s excited squeak, whirling just in time to see her grab something off the Bulletin Board. “What is?” she asked, taking the parchment and smoothing it out.
“A flier for the Weapons Tourney?” Hilda read over her shoulder. Apparently this month’s challenge was for axe-wielders, and while the pink-haired noble might excel, something told Dorothea that she wouldn’t go anywhere near it without proper incentive from the Professor.
“No! …well, I mean, yes, that’s what it is, but I mean -- this is the answer! We have a music tournament!”
“…a music tournament?” Dorothea repeated.
“Yeah!” Annette giggled. “We could have sign-ups, and people could bring their instruments or sing, and it could have brackets just like they do in the training grounds, only they’d be competing with their music! And the audience response could be how the winner’s picked!”
Dorothea felt a smile dawn across her face. “…Annie, that’s brilliant! We could get a sponsor to help judge ties, and offer a grand prize for the winner…”
“We could make fliers the way they do for the training ground matches, too!” Hilda added.
“I bet if we ask around the monastery, we could get tons of sign-ups -- and I’m sure lots of people would want to see it!” Annette insisted. “Ooh, this is so exciting!!”
“It’s a wonderful idea,” Dorothea agreed. “And I’m sure if we join forces, we can make it into a dazzling show.”
As they put their heads together to plan, for the first time in ages, she felt a thrill of excitement for what lay ahead. Garreg Mach might not have much appreciation for music now -- but if they got their way, Dorothea would make sure that changed.
-----
“A music show? Oh, you mean like they’ve got at the fair? Hey, count me in! Are you gonna have snacks?”
“No, Raph,” Dorothea sighed.
“You sure? Everybody likes good food -- I bet you’d get a ton of people to come if they could eat while they watched.”
She shook her head, fighting back a smile. It was hard to be frustrated with him when he was so enthusiastic, but she did wish he’d think about more than food. “Do they have snacks for the weapon tournaments at the training grounds?”
“Heck yeah they do!” he laughed. “I never miss a tourney, they’ve always got something for the people in the stands…”
“…huh.” She hadn’t known that. Maybe they could ask about refreshments: after all, everything else had been going splendidly so far. Professor Manuela had been over the moon when they approached her with the idea, and had swiftly appointed herself as their ‘impartial’ judge (said with a wink that made Dorothea certain she was far more partial than she’d ever admit to being); while the former diva took to planning and preparations, including venue selection and construction, she left the three students in charge of gauging interest and getting early sign-ups so they could start preparing their brackets. Hilda, rather expectedly, had complained of feeling poorly, so Dorothea had agreed to help out in canvasing the Golden Deer…which had led her, rather unexpectedly, to Raphael and his surprisingly helpful suggestion.
“Alright,” she agreed, making a note for later. “I’ll see what we can do about snacks, then.”
“All right!!” he cheered. “You’re the best, Dorothea!”
“Aw, thank you,” she smiled. “But would you want to take part? You know, be up on the stage in front of the audience? We’re looking for any kind of musical talent, whether you sing or play an instrument…”
His face scrunched up for a minute in deep, somewhat painful-looking thought. “Hmmm…I’m mostly good for muscle,” he shrugged. “Don’t get me wrong, I love music! I’m just not much good at makin’ it -- oh, hey, have you asked Bernadetta yet?”
“Bernie?”
“Yeah! Oh, man, she’s got this little brass thingy she plays -- she was playin’ it in the greenhouse one day, an’ I heard it from all the way in the training grounds! It was the best thing I’d ever heard!”
“Interesting,” Dorothea mused, scribbling another little note down.
“You didn’t know?”
“Bernie’s pretty shy about her talents,” Dorothea confided. “Seems she’s got all kinds of hidden ones…”
“Uh…if you go ask her, can you maybe…not tell her I told you?” he asked nervously. “See, uh…she got pretty upset when I found out, and made me promise not to tell anybody, but then you came talking about music an’ stuff and I just got real excited about maybe seein’ her up there an’ hearin’ it again, so…”
“Oh, Raph, you’re a sweetheart, aren’t you?” she giggled. “Don’t worry. I won’t say a word.”
“Thanks, Dorothea,” he beamed. “You really are the best.”
-----
“M-music show? Me? Perform!? How did you find out? Did Raphael tell you!?” Bernadetta demanded through the tiny crack between the doors of her room.
“Raphael? I haven’t talked to him,” Dorothea lied. “Hilda’s asking around with the Golden Deer, since they’re her classmates, just like Annette’s asking the Blue Lions and I’m asking all my fellow Eagles. We’re trying to get a list together of students who want to take part. Do you have any musical talents, Bernie?”
“N-n-no!” she stammered. “Nope, not me, Bernie’s just good for staying out of the way, yes indeed…”
“I think you’re good for a lot more than that,” Dorothea insisted. “I know you’ve got so much talent, and it’s such a shame to hide it all away. Maybe you sing in here, or play an oboe when we’re all away from the dorms…”
“Trumpet,” the archer mumbled. “B-but I could never get up in front of so many people!”
“Oh, but from on stage, under the lights, you can’t even see most of the audience -- and wouldn’t it be great to share all that talent with the whole academy?”
“Maybe for you!” the archer squeaked. “All those people out there in the dark, staring at me, and no place to hide? That s-sounds terrifying!”
…Dorothea actually hadn’t thought about that. She was so used to basking in the attention…but that would be scary for someone as shy as Bernadetta. “That’s okay,” she smiled. “You don’t have to. But…would you maybe come to watch? Ferdie and I have already signed up to take part, and we could always use someone to cheer for us.”
“…m-maybe,” came the muffled reply.
“And if you do change your mind about being on stage, you know we’ll both be cheering you on, right?” she coaxed. “Annette even told me that Felix promised to come watch the performances, and you know how he feels about everything that isn’t training. We’d all really love it if you joined in.”
Silence from the other side of the doors. Had she pushed too hard…?
“I’ll…I-I’ll think about it.”
Beaming, Dorothea made a note on her sign-up sheet. “That’s all we’d ask for. Just let me know, okay?”
And maybe it was her imagination, but she thought she heard the smallest sound of agreement before the doors clicked firmly shut between them.
-----
Even in her fantasies, Dorothea never could have dreamed things would go this well. Not only did they get enough sign-ups to make a full five-round bracket, the whole monastery was buzzing with anticipation days before the event. It reminded her a little of Enbarr the week before a Mittelfrank production, where every group she passed on the street seemed to be talking about the upcoming show -- whether it was about their excitement to see the spectacle or despair over not getting one of the endlessly coveted (and frightfully limited) tickets. Here, thankfully, seating was hardly an issue, since Professor Manuela had managed to secure the Reception Hall for the event: the whole student body could fit there with standing room to spare, even with the stage taking up the front quarter.
Come the morning of the show, posters listing the contestants appeared on every bulletin board, and Dorothea scanned the starting matches before the thought of breakfast even occurred to her. She recognized more than a few names: Ferdinand of course, and herself (naturally), as well as Lorenz (unfortunately), Hilda, Annette, and even Bernie.
It was all so exciting, she could hardly bear it.
Time crawled by while she waited for the tournament to begin. Before noon she’d warmed up, improvised a few little tunes as practice, and rehearsed a few of her favorite songs in preparation. By the time the Reception Hall opened to the competitors, she’d chosen her starting and ending arrangements and decided on the pieces she would use if she faced any real competition. And once the doors opened and the audience began to crowd into the available seats, she felt her heart begin to race in anticipation of what was soon to come.
She didn’t even mind that she had to wait. The first match, to her delight, featured Annette and Bernie: blushing fiercely, the little red-head made her way cheerfully through an obviously original tune, while Dorothea’s fellow Eagle stuck to a familiar Imperial melody, squeezing her eyes shut tight and playing her trumpet at the stage rather than the audience. In spite of that, it was a remarkable performance, and Bernie might have won just by virtue of Raphael’s enthusiastic applause -- but his thunderous cheer startled the poor recluse and sent her bolting from the stage before the match could be officially declared, forfeiting her chance to proceed. But that might have been for the best, she supposed: Bernie clearly wasn’t big on the spotlight.
The rest of the first round and all of the second went smoothly enough. Though she didn’t bother watching every pair, she saw both Ferdinand and Annette proceed on to the quarterfinals, while Hilda lost to Lorenz in her second bout (though the noblewoman hardly seemed bothered by the loss). Dorothea’s own matches barely required any effort on her part to win: she’d spent so long practicing her favorite songs from her favorite operas in the days leading up to this competition, but a few simple melodies were all it took to ensure that she made it through the preliminaries. Even against her third opponent, all it took was the chorus from an Adrestian folksong to seal her victory...though Annette lost her own bout against Ferdinand in the same round. Dorothea congratulated her all the same, and promised to win for Annie’s sake -- perhaps a bold promise from anyone else, but one that the former Mittelfrank diva felt assured she could keep.
And sure enough, in the semifinals she not only faced her fellow Eagle but beat him handily with one of the arias she’d so carefully prepared. He lost quite gracefully, too, applauding her as enthusiastically as the audience itself and conceding even before Profesor Manuela could announce the final judgment. And with the round done, Dorothea made her way back behind the stage, humming to herself as she waited for the intermission to end and the finals to begin…
“Congratulations on sweeping the competition, Dorothea.”
She paused, turning to see the leader of the Golden Deer House grinning at her from a few feet away. Mustering up a pleasant enough smile, she offered a nod in greeting. “Why, thank you, Claude. Are you here to wish Lorenz well before I crush him?”
The nobleman blinked. “Why would I do that? Lorenz got knocked out in the last round.”
Dorothea stared at him for a long, silent moment. “To who?” she demanded, hunting about for a bracket that might give her an answer--
“...me, actually.”
Slowly, carefully, she turned again to face the leader of the Golden Deer. “Guess you weren’t watching the match,” he chuckled, hefting an odd lute-like instrument. “Lorenz was...less than thrilled with the outcome, if it helps.”
Actually, it just made her regret all the more that she hadn’t paid attention: she’d been looking forward to seeing his face when he finally lost. “Well, I suppose congratulations are in order for you, too, then,” she said, turning away from him again. “May the best musician win.”
“Oh, uh...about that.”
She glanced at him over her shoulder, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear as he drummed his fingertips along the neck of his instrument. “I was...well. I was wondering how you’d feel about calling it a draw.”
A thin smile carved its way across her face. “Are you that confident you can beat me, Claude?”
“Hardly,” he scoffed. “I have no doubt that you’d mop the floor with me.” She felt sure he was flattering her -- but she waited all the same, watching his grin soften almost shyly, though it still didn’t quite touch his eyes. “I was just...hoping I could perform with you, instead of having to compete against you. Y’know, everything here at the monastery is about pitting us against each other: the weapon tourneys, the fishing competition, and now this...I feel like we could put on a better show working together than we could separately trying to one-up each other. You can have the prize, too, if you want,” he added. “Pretty sure you’d win it anyway, but...what do you say?”
Beyond the curtain, she heard Professor Manuela take the stage again and announce the final round to the audience. Claude only watched Dorothea, though, seeming content to be patient and wait for her even as their names rang out over the wild cheering of the crowd.
And at last she smiled, lifting a hand to cup her cheek. “How are you at improvising with that lute of yours?”
“If you can sing a few bars, I can probably make something work,” he grinned.
“Why don’t we put that to the test?”
“With pleasure,” he agreed, bowing playfully before offering his arm to her. Returning the gesture with a teasing curtsy of her own, Dorothea accepted -- and they walked out onto the stage together, applause washing over them in waves of wondrous sound. They parted smoothly, Claude taking up his instrument and strumming a few notes to ensure it was properly in tune before looking expectantly to her, waiting for her lead; Dorothea turned her own attention to the darkness, savoring the anticipation of the shadowed audience before her...and finally beginning to sing, the somber melody echoing throughout the crowded reception hall.
“Reach for my hand, I’ll soar away, Into the dawn, oh I wish I could stay…”
A soft chord joined in, the notes as sweet and clear as her own...and yet it did not overpower her voice: instead it seemed to carry the words higher, elevating the music in ways she had not heard since she left the Mittelfrank Opera House. She did not falter, though: instead she continued, allowing a smile to creep into her voice as she sang.
“Here in cherished halls, in peaceful days I fear the edge of dawn, knowing time betrays…”
“Is this really gonna be the last song we do?” Claude asked, his voice carrying out into the dark and startling her back to reality. “Come on, Dorothea, we’ve gotta liven it up a little!”
Even as he spoke, his fingers flew over the strings, keeping the key but tumbling into a bright, rousing accompaniment. He winked at her when she turned to stare at him, repeating the same refrain in invitation...and though she’d only ever heard the piece as a wandering lament before, she could not deny his compelling harmony.
Their music rang through the reception hall, her voice rising into the rafters on the strum of lute strings...and for the first time since she’d come to the Officer’s Academy, Dorothea felt that familiar, wonderful thrill again as the enraptured crowd watched them perform their duet on the stage.
-----
In the fortnight following the tourney, Dorothea had become the most popular girl in Garreg Mach. It seemed like every young man, noble birth or otherwise, wanted a moment of her time, a scrap of her attention...and, of course, a chance to hear her sing again.
While they’d agreed to a draw before ever taking the stage, Claude had gracefully conceded when Professor Manuela declared Dorothea the winner. It had bothered her when it happened -- all the more for how she couldn’t correct the matter over the riotous applause -- and try as she might over the intervening days, she’d still been unable to set the record straight with anyone she spoke with (aside from Hilda, who didn’t seem the least bit surprised to hear it). But strangest of all was the fact, despite now having an audience eager to hear her perform again...she couldn’t find that thrill anymore. It had been there while she was on stage with Claude, but in every performance since -- no matter how many people she had hanging on her every note -- she just felt the same hollow sort of yearning she had in the cathedral before all of this began.
Dorothea sighed as she made her way out of the dining hall, taking the stairs down to the fishing pond and wandering toward the dormitories. All the attention did get tiring after a while; luckily the grounds seemed deserted this afternoon, and she stretched her arms high as she tipped her head back, breathing in the crisp autumn air while the sun warmed her face and the soft sound of music drifted by…
She stopped, scanning the lawn and the path along the row of dorms. No one was there that she could see, but she could hear the strum of lute strings; she hurried on, listening to the music grow louder and louder until she felt certain she was close -- but the sound was too clear to be coming from behind the closed doors, and there was still no one around that she could see. “Claude?” she called, raising her voice as much as she dared.
The music stopped. “Dorothea?” the nobleman’s voice replied -- not from beside or behind her, but from above.
Tilting her head back and shading her eyes, she stared at the young man peering at her over the eaves of the dormitory roof. “What are you doing up there?” she asked.
“Playing,” he said.
“How did you even get up there? And why are you playing on the roof, for that matter?”
“It’s complicated,” he shrugged. “...well, alright, it’s not that complicated, but...should I come down so we can talk?”
Dorothea opened her mouth to agree...and paused. “...I could always come up,” she offered.
A grin twitched across his face. “I’ll meet you at my room, then,” he laughed, waving before disappearing from view. Hurrying back down to the greenhouses, she turned into the stairwell leading to the second floor of dorms where most of the noble students stayed; at the top of the steps, she saw Claude poke his head out into the hall, beaming at the sight of her. Smiling despite herself, Dorothea hurried over and ducked past him without even thinking...and as he closed the doors, she stifled a giggle at the sight of his room.
She had seen cluttered her share of dorms before -- Linhardt’s came immediately to mind -- but she’d never seen anything quite like this, with books taking up half the bed, papers spilling off the desk and onto the floor, and shelves cluttered with a mix of plants, vials, and strange brass instruments she couldn’t identify. Claude seemed briefly puzzled by her reaction...though, after another moment, he rather sheepishly began gathering up the parchment piled on his chair to give her a place to sit. “So what can I do for you?”
“Well, first of all I’d like to know how you got onto the roof,” she replied. “And off it so fast, for that matter.”
He quirked one eyebrow in apparent surprise. “What, that? It’s easy.” Dropping the papers in a haphazard pile on the desk, he stepped up onto the wide ledge beneath the open window, leaning out into empty space and stretching one arm up...
Claude jumped.
Dorothea lunged for him, knowing already it was too late -- but he did not fall. She stumbled into the sill, gaping as he effortlessly pulled himself up out of sight; crawling up onto the ledge, she cautiously poked her head out the window...and saw him lean out over the eave, grinning down at her from his perch. “That doesn’t look easy to me,” Dorothea pointed out.
“It just takes some practice,” he laughed. “Want to come up? The view’s great,” he added, reaching a hand down to her.
The sensible, logical, rational part of her brain insisted that she’d rather not break her neck trying to get a nice view of the monastery...even as she extended her own arm, gripping his wrist and feeling him hold fast. She heard the instructions he gave her -- she was more than certain of that, since she never would have done this on her own -- but whatever he’d said escaped her the moment she stepped off the ledge into empty air, clutching tight to Claude’s wrist even as his pleasant laughter rang in her ears. In the end he did most of the work pulling her up beside him...but once she caught her breath and her heart stopped feeling like a bird trying to escape its cage, she had to admit that he was right: the campus was lovely from so high up.
“You doing okay?” he asked, patting her shoulder gently.
“Better, I think,” she agreed, scooting further back from the edge. “So, that explains how you got up here -- now why are we here?”
“Well, in my case it’s because it’s a nice day, I don’t have anything going on, and I’m tired of dealing with Lorenz, so I figured I’d come up here and play a bit. He can yell all he wants from down there, but I’m not stopping unless he gets on this roof to make me.” As he spoke, he removed the lute strapped to his back, strumming a few notes and idly beginning to tune it again. “But what brings you up here?”
“Well...actually, I was looking for you,” she admitted, tucking a few strands of hair behind her ear. “I haven’t seen much of you since the music tourney.”
“You’ve been busy,” he winked.
Dorothea rolled her eyes, leaning back against the slightly pitched roof. “Don’t remind me, I needed to get away from it for a while.”
“Really? I thought you’d be happy about all the attention.”
“I was at first,” she sighed, “and it’s been wonderful to have more chances to sing, but…”
She trailed off, watching a few wispy clouds wandering across the pale blue sky. After a moment, the quiet strum of lute strings fell silent; glancing over at the nobleman, she found him watching her with interest, his head canting slightly to one side as he gestured for her to continue. “It...doesn’t feel like I thought it would. Back in the opera, it was always so grand and emotional, singing to an audience -- I loved that feeling, and it’s one of the things I’ve missed most since I left. I’d hoped the competition would bring it back, and singing with you I found it again, but...I haven’t felt it since. I’ve been feeling guilty about the way it ended up, and…”
“Hey, I said from the start that you’d mop the floor with me in a competition,” he laughed. “I don’t mind. I’m glad I got the chance to perform with you -- that was my prize.”
“Be serious,” she huffed. “I’m trying to apologize!”
“And I’m saying you don’t have to -- it’s not like you had a say in Professor Manuela deciding on a winner.”
“But if I don’t get it sorted out, how am I supposed to enjoy singing like I used to?”
“Are you sure guilt is what’s keeping you from it?”
Her eyes narrowed slightly as she stared at him. “What do you mean?”
“You said that you haven’t felt that thrill since you left the opera. You didn’t get it again until the finals, right?” She nodded in agreement. “And then after the finals it was gone again?” Again, she nodded in agreement. “So what was different about the finals, compared to everything before and after?”
“The drama of the grand finale?” she offered.
“Well, that, too,” he chuckled, “but you weren’t performing alone, either: your melody had a harmony.”
Dorothea scoffed at the notion. “That seems…”
She trailed off as Claude leaned forward, propping his chin on his hands. She hadn’t thought of it like that before, but...her fondest memories from the opera were of performances with accompaniment: grand arias carried by a full orchestra, soft odes lilting over quavering strings. “...possible,” she conceded.
“So maybe what you were really looking for was a chance to sing with somebody, instead of going it alone or singing over them.”
“I’m flattered you think I’m so selfless,” she giggled. “Really, I just wanted an audience.” But even so, that final performance with him, building on one another’s leads and creating something far grander and more beautiful than Dorothea could have done alone...it had brought with it a familiar, delightful frisson.
“Well, I know I had more fun playing with you than I did taking Lorenz down a peg -- and I really enjoyed that,” Claude laughed, strumming his lute again, “and I, for one, would be honored to reprise the performance -- though, fair warning, I can’t promise a crowd this time around.”
“You know, I am free this afternoon,” she grinned. He beamed back at her, picking a cheerful tune on his lute strings -- an Adrestian folksong she recognized instantly; as she started in on the first verse and their duet drifted out over the quiet campus, she felt the thrill lift her heart again...and maybe it was just her imagination, but she swore Claude’s smile finally reached his eyes.

--------------------&--------------------
A deep pounding in the temples roused Hyunjin from his sleep, a groan escaping him as he tried to sit up, his head spinning. He remembered he’d crashed on the couch again in the middle of the night after coming home from another company party. As usual, he’d had too much to drink and couldn’t make it all the way to his bedroom to undress or sleep properly. Now his neck and shoulders hurt from the uncomfortable couch and he felt like he needed a year long hot shower.
The smell of cooking registered in his nose, turning his stomach but waking him up a little more. He could hear the soft voice of his room mate and best friend, Chan, chiming from the kitchen, singing along to a christmas song he couldn’t quite make out.
Chan emerged from the kitchen carrying a steaming bowl, grinning wide as he noticed Hyunjin up and somewhat alert,
“Hey sleepyhead, you’re finally awake.” His voice was high and babyish as he approached the couch.
Hyunjin groaned again. No matter how close they were, he was still embarrassed whenever Chan pulled out his cute charms around him. Lacking the energy to complain so soon after waking up, he just took the bowl from Chan and brought it to his lips without a word. Despite expecting the taste of Chan’s famous hangover soup, Hyunjin still recoiled as the spices burned his tongue and throat. He coughed sharply, earning a pat on the head from his friend,
“That’ll wake you up for sure.”
“What’s that?” Hyunjin pointed to the luggage piled next to their apartment’s front door, distracting himself as he took another scalding sip of the soup broth. Chan tilted his head like a confused puppy, frowning,
“I’m leaving to stay with my brother for break, remember?”
“That’s today?”
“Of course. Christmas is only four days away you know.” He didn’t know, but Hyunjin didn’t want to say that out loud. People were always either appalled that he didn’t celebrate the holidays or they pitied him. In reality he never got to celebrate like others did when his parents were busy with holiday music events and parties. He was used to being alone this time of year. Still, he couldn’t help eye the stack of bags with jealousy. The thought of waking up on christmas morning without his best friend was not something he looked forward to.
Chan noticed the way his eyes kept flicking toward the door,
“Are you sure I can leave you alone for so long?”
Hyunjin scoffed, “What do you mean? I’m an adult, I can take care of myself.”
“Getting drunk every night until Christmas is not taking care of yourself, Hyunnie.” Hyunjin grimaced at the nickname. Chan only used it when he was sincerely worried about him, and Hyunjin didn’t want to have this serious of a conversation when he’d be leaving right after. He focused on finishing his breakfast instead, skin burning where Chan was watching him.
“Why don’t you come with me?”
Hyunjin choked as he inhaled broth in shock at the proposition,
“Excuse me?” He managed between coughs.
“I mean it. I don’t want you to be here by yourself.”
The witty come back on Hyunjin’s tongue burned away when he met Chan’s sad eyes. Truthfully, he didn’t want to be here alone either, but the thought of staying in a stranger’s house in a strange town was equally unappealing.
“I know my brother won’t mind. He loves company, and we’ll make room for you.”
“I’m not going to win this fight, am I?” Hyunjin sighed, defeated.
“Nope!” Chan grinned and dragged him into a one-sided hug, “I’ll help you pack once you wake up.”
It didn't take long for Hyunjin to shower and collect his things. Though what he owned was luxurious and expensive, he didn't own much of anything. His clothes for the trip took up a rolling suitcase and everything else fit neatly in his shoulder bag. How Chan managed to fill three duffle bags, a laptop case, and his backpack, Hyunjin would never know. Still, between the two of them packing up Chan’s car, they managed to get on the road by the time he’d wanted to leave.
“Do you mind if I call him to let him know we’re coming?” Chan asked, fiddling with his dashboard to connect the car to his phone.
Hyunjin shrugged, putting in his ear buds to respect the privacy of their conversation. Even with his volume turned, though, the reverberating bass of the deepest “Hello?” he’d ever heard cut through to his ears.
Hyunjin had never seen Chan’s brother, but he couldn’t imagine the person that voice must be coming from. His eyes widened as he listened to them talk,
“I’m on my way over now!” Chan said, flashing Hyunjin a bright smile when he noticed his friend’s face, “Hey, I’m sorry for not asking earlier but my roommate didn’t have a place to celebrate Christmas, so is it alright I brought him along?”
“Of course, of course!” His brother responded, his voice lightening only slightly with warmth, “I’ll get the guest room ready. Will he be coming to the party?”
Hyunjin sat up straighter at the mention of a party, looking toward Chan, who only rolled his eyes,
“Yeah, I think it’ll be good for him to go.”
“Sweet! I’ll see you guys when you get here.”
“Love you, Lix.”
“Love you too!”
“Party?” Hyunjin asked curiously as soon as they hung up the call, “I thought you wanted me to stay away from parties.”
“It’s not the kind of party you’re thinking of.” Chan shook his head, a laugh hiding behind his lips, “It’s a celebration on Christmas Eve. Everyone comes together for free food and gifts.”
“Sounds boring.” As long as there’s liquor for the adults, he thought to himself. He knew he’d need it to get through that kind of Christmas cheer. Chan only hummed in response, turning on the radio. It didn’t take long for him to start singing along to the holiday music, definitely not helping Hyunjin’s mood, even with his own music playing through his headphones.
It took a couple songs passing without him registering the music for Hyunjin to realize he was still thinking about the voice on the other end of the car speakers. So warm yet so deep and mysterious at the same time. Chan talked often with pride about his younger brother, but Hyunjin had never taken the time to envision what the boy was actually like. In his head he was just a younger Chan. Clearly not with that voice. If he’d heard someone speak like that in a club or at a venue, he’d be flirting with them in an instant.
After an hour of passive contemplation and at least ten plays of Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You, Hyunjin finally pulled out his ear buds and turned down the radio. Chan turned to look at him mid-lyric,
"What's wrong?"
"Tell me more about your brother." Chan opened his mouth to gush like usual but paused, looking at him curiously,
"You've never asked about him before."
"It would be rude to show up at his house and not know anything about him."
“I talk about him all the time?”
“I don’t listen.” He lied.
Chan rolled his eyes, “Well… his name is Felix. He’s the same age as you are, 6 months younger. I basically raised him when we were kids because our parents were gone all the time. He owns and works at a little bakery in town-”
“He’s a baker?” Now Hyunjin was really confused.
“The BEST baker!” Chan corrected, a little over-excited, “Seriously, all your stress will melt away the second you taste his brownies. He’s also a great cook, of course. And he’s a dancer, like you!”
Hyunjin couldn’t figure this boy out. Every detail Chan shared over the following half hour was like gaining a new jigsaw piece that belonged to a completely different puzzle. “Felix” was a baker at heart with a passion for singing and dancing. Somehow he’d never followed in his elder brother’s footsteps despite being a gifted musician. By the time he was done listening, he both regretted asking and was unimaginably curious. All because of that stupidly deep voice on the other end of the call.
They drove from late morning until sunset, the city passing by them giving way to towns and eventually just an expanse of highway and trees. Occasionally an off-ramp would lead to some semblance of civilization beyond the humming of the cars around them, otherwise there was nothing this far out of the city. Clouds on the horizon turned deep red and purple as Chan finally took an exit, a storm in the distance squeezing the last drops of golden light from the sun before it set.
They took several winding turns through the trees until the sun disappeared behind them and lights flared up around the car. Hyunjin stared in amazement as the trees lining the main road held strings of christmas lights in their branches, leading them straight to the town’s center. Though he would never admit it out loud, Hyunjin thought they were beautiful.
The entire town was decorated as though they had just entered the north pole. Every light pole held an oversized wreath, every tree strung with lights, every hovel and storefront decorated as if they wanted to see their tiny town from space. Hyunjin was dumbstruck; he was used to this kind of sight in big cities. It was to draw tourists and commerce for the big stores and the attractions. But here, this tiny town had none of that. They did this for the joy of it. How anyone could be in love with this holiday in such a way, he did not know. He was so lost in wonder he didn’t even notice they’d stopped until Chan turned the car off and the radio stopped playing, snapping Hyunjin’s attention back to reality.
They’d pulled up to the small driveway of an equally small house. It was two stories tall, but only wide enough to fit the front door and a window on the first story. Thin trails of smoke rose from the back of the house, and a porch enclosed the entrance, orange light spilling out onto the wooden steps from the door’s frosted glass window.
Shivers ripped through Hyunjin as he stepped out of the car, his breath swirling around him in a puff of steam. The temperature had dropped below freezing already, the cold eating away the nerves that started bubbling in Hyunjin’s stomach. The house in front of him looked cozy and warm and he just wanted to get inside.
“Come on!” Chan grinned, motioning for Hyunjin to follow as he nearly sprinted up the stairs. The door was unlocked for them, and he shuffled after his friend into the heat of the home. He rubbed his hands together as he stood over the humming radiator of the entryway, taking in the overwhelming sensory experience of the home. Other than the warmth, the first thing to hit Hyunjin was the smell of food cooking somewhere deeper in the house, making his stomach growl. He hadn’t eaten much more than a few snacks since his breakfast soup.
Secondly, everything was covered in christmas decorations. Everything. The walls, the stairs to the second floor, the doors, the dining room to their left. Even the crown molding lining the ceiling of the old house. The warm orange light he’d seen from outside was emitted by dozens if not hundreds of little warm-white bulbs. It was as if Santa Claus himself lived there.
“We’re here!” Chan called out, waddling into the hallway with Hyunjin right behind. A half-laugh half-yell of excitement burst from what Hyunjin assumed was the kitchen, startling him. Yet the human that emerged from the doorway was the most shocking part.
The boy was just a tiny bit shorter than Chan, and petite enough to be swimming in his oversized sweater and apron. His hair was a shade more platinum than Hyunjin's own blonde, his skin a soft russet with splashes of dark freckles across his nose and cheeks.
"Hyung!" He exclaimed in a high-pitched voice as he ran into Chan's outstretched arms. Certainly this wasn't the same boy that spoke over the car speakers.
"You must be Hyunjin!" His deep voice returned as he pulled away from his brother, beaming up at Hyunjin with the world's brightest grin, "It's nice to meet you!"
"Nice to meet you t-" Hyunjin had extended a hand for a handshake but Felix quickly ignored it, pulling him into a sudden hug. Hyunjin stiffened at the informality, entirely unprepared to meet someone that was even more physically affectionate than Chan. He could see the family resemblance.
“Don’t be nervous,” Felix tried to soothe him, patting his back before pulling away, “You’re hyung’s friend, so this is your home too.”
Hyunjin couldn’t respond, his brain was short-circuiting from the physical affection and the deep voice and all the lights. All he could process was Chan trying desperately yet failing to suppress a laugh in his direction. Thankfully, an obnoxious beeping from the kitchen saved him from having to formulate a response.
“Ah! Dinner’s ready, you guys made it just in time!” He scurried off to fetch the food, bouncing along with excitement as he ran like a child.
“You alright?” Chan chuckled, smacking Hyunjin between the shoulderblades to grab his attention.
“What have you dragged me into?” He whispered, hoping his host wouldn’t hear.
“Come on Hyunjin, I know you guys are going to end up getting along just fine.” Chan winked at him, which Hyunjin thought was odd, but at this point everything around him was twisted backwards and upside down so he didn’t think much more of it.
They hung up their jackets and Chan led him into the dining room where Felix was setting out three large bowls of rice next to three bowls of the most delicious smelling kimchi stew Hyunjin had ever seen. The chandelier that hung over the small table was turned off, the room illuminated instead by the vibrant white glow of the christmas tree in the corner of the room. Felix’s smile as they entered was just as bright; Hyunjin felt he couldn’t look too long or else he’d get lost in it. Instead he turned to Chan as he took a seat next to him, watching his friend’s nose scrunch up at the thought of a spicy meal.
“Don’t worry, it’s not very spicy.” Felix assured, reading Hyunjin’s exact train of thought. Of course he’d know Chan couldn’t handle spicy food. He couldn’t even eat the hangover soup he made Hyunjin in the mornings.
“Thank God.” Chan nodded with relief, “Shall we eat? I’m starving.”
“Of course, please help yourselves.” Felix said as he took a seat across from Hyunjin at the table, still smiling. Hyunjin still couldn’t look at him, his heart skipping at the sight of his grin. Instead, he dug into his stew.
An involuntary groan rumbled in his throat at the flavor, his body warming instantly as he slowed to savor the taste. Not that he’d had many home cooked meals in his life, but Hyunjin couldn’t help but think it was the best tasting meal he’d ever had.
When he came back up from his bowl, Hyunjin froze under the stares of both Chan and Felix. They looked at him eagerly, leaning in as if waiting for him to speak.
“Uh…” He struggled to find words as he swallowed a mouthful of beef, “It’s really good.”
Felix let out a sigh of relief then a loud, sudden laugh. His grin swallowed his face again as he picked up his chopsticks,
“Good! I was worried whether or not you’d like it.”
The comment came off so casual that it left Hyunjin’s ears burning with embarrassment. Why did he care what Hyunjin thought about his food? They were strangers. Yet the longer he lingered in this house the more it felt familiar. Like he was visiting a beloved family member after years apart. He shook off the feeling.
He’s a stranger. Hyunjin reminded himself.
“Is Seungmin still working at the bakery after moving out?” Chan asked when Hyunjin’s senses were ready to return to the conversation.
“Yeah, but I gave him the week off.” Felix waved his hand dismissively, though a smirk lingered on his lips, “He deserves to spend as much time as he can with Minho.”
“They’re back together?”
“Do they ever really break up?” Both brothers laughed in agreement, nodding vigorously. Hyunjin was lost in the conversation, so he just sat and smiled awkwardly. Chan giggled teasingly as he continued,
“What about you? Is there a special boy I should meet while I’m here?”
Hyunjin and Felix immediately locked eyes at the question. Felix’s face grew tomato-red, and the intense fire in his ears told Hyunjin they looked much the same. His head reeled as he realized that’s why Chan was never awkward whenever he came home to find Hyunjin with a boy, or why they never had the talk about it after.
“Uh.. No- no. I’m not seeing anyone.” Felix stuttered, stuffing his mouth with rice so he wouldn’t have to keep talking. Hyunjin felt sorry for him as the boy’s sunny smile vanished. He could sense Felix’s anxiety at being outed to a stranger. Even if he’d welcomed Hyunjin with open arms, this was a different level of personal information. He tried to catch Felix’s eye again but the boy was too focused on his food. Hyunjin cleared his throat instead,
“That’s too bad. I was hoping to meet a cute boy while we were here.”
Felix perked up a little at that, a smile entertaining the corners of his lips while he chewed. They finished their dinner in mostly silence, the sweet hum of christmas music filtering into the room via the kitchen. Though he knew he’d regret it when he returned to the dance studio after break, Hyunjin ate until he was completely full, letting himself indulge in the delicious food just this once.
“So… just you in the bakery tomorrow?” Chan asked as they all leaned back in their chairs, finished and satisfied.
“Yep!” Felix smiled and nodded as he stood to gather the empty dishes from the table, “I’m only aiming for 1000 this year so the two days should be plenty of time. As long as you’ll help?”
“Of course! What are brothers for?”
“1000 what?” Hyunjin looked between them, confused and apprehensive about being in a stranger’s home by himself.
“Cookies! For the Christmas Eve Party. You’re welcome to come help too if you want.”
Hyunjin screwed up his face at the idea; he was NOT a good cook, or baker. Hence his lack of experience with home-cooked meals, “I think I’ll just take the day to look around town.”
“Well you’re welcome to stop by. It’ll just be us in there.” Was that disappointment in his deep voice? Hyunjin shook his head at the thought. While he certainly had a reputation for being cocky, he wasn’t typically this full of himself. There was no reason for this boy he’d just met to have such an impact on his emotions. Felix didn’t care about him or what he did. They didn’t know each other. Hyunjin was only here because of Chan.
“I’m going to start unloading the car.” He said, already heading for the front door. He needed to clear his head. The cold night air would help.
--------------------Felix--------------------
“Is that everything?” Felix asked as he helped his brother tuck the last of the gifts he’d brought under the giant tree in his living room. His cheeks hurt from smiling, and he had to restrain himself from shaking the boxes whenever he glimpsed his name written on the tag.
“Yep!” Chan smiled just as wide, pretending to dust off his hands, “Just have to unpack my clothes and stuff.”
“Do you want help?”
“Nah. I’ll be back down in a bit.” He scratched his fingers in Felix’s hair as he stood, making the younger boy giggle. Felix hadn’t realized how much he had missed his hyung; Chan was gone to the big city to chase his dreams and rarely got a break to come home. Whenever he visited, it felt like Felix’s heart was whole again.
As he stood up from his spot in front of the tree, Felix’s mind wandered from his brother to the stranger upstairs, Hyunjin. Hwang Hyunjin.
Being a dancer himself, Felix was familiar with the dancers that Chan worked with, spending hours memorizing their routines. The fact that Hyunjin was here in his home made nervous, star-struck butterflies flutter in his stomach. Even despite his cold demeanor.
Felix could tell it was an act; the mask had slipped when Hyunjin rescued him from Chan accidentally outing that he liked boys in front of a stranger. It slipped in the way Hyunjin looked to Chan like a brother, for comfort and reassurance. There was a kind person underneath all that ice. He’d warm up once they got to know each other, Felix was sure of it.
“I’ll go check on him, I think.” He mumbled to himself as he checked his pulse, a nervous tick he’d had since he was a child. He stopped to grab a pillow and blankets from the closet under the stairs, just in case his guest needed an extra one, before heading up.
The door to the guest bedroom was ajar so Felix opened it with a nudge of his foot. He found Hyunjin standing in the middle of the room, vigorously texting on his phone. His long, golden hair hung loose, free from the ponytail he’d had it in before. His plump bottom lip was trapped between his teeth, his eyebrows pulled together in concern. It was the first time Felix really recognized how breath-takingly beautiful the man was in person.
When he noticed light spilling into the room from the hall, Hyunjin looked up from his phone, startled as though Felix had caught him doing something he shouldn’t have been. Frowning, he paused in the doorway,
“Is everything okay?”
“Y-yeah. Sorry, you just surprised me.” Hyunjin spoke as if finding his breath again, his ears turning pink again like they had been at dinner.
“Um… Is there anything you need? Like another blanket or something?” Felix shuffled his feet awkwardly. The star-struck butterflies were back in full-force and he was sure he looked just as embarrassed as Hyunjin himself did.
“No thank you, I’m alright.” An awkward pause, “Hey… is that offer to help at the bakery still open?”
Felix’s heart flipped up into his throat,
“Yeah of course! You… you changed your mind?”
“I don’t think I’ll be seeing much of the town.” He stepped back and pointed to the small window. Half an inch of snow already clung to the outer windowsill while large, heavy flakes sparkling in the lights lining the house dove through the air. The storm that had been threatening the sky all day finally arrived.
“Oh that’s alright,” Felix grinned at the sight, excitement mingling with his nervousness making him bounce on his toes, “We’ll have a white christmas at least! You’re welcome to join me and Chan any time.”
“Thank you.” Hyunjin bowed slightly, still being awkward, “Um… good night.”
“Good night, Hyunjin.” Before he could see his reaction, Felix stepped back and shut the door. His heart raced and he had to take a moment to catch his breath.
“It’s going to be a long three days…”

ive only felt religion when ive lied with you- 1
A/N: (smut, Chan x reader, Canon compliant, fan/idol)
The sun peeped in at you through the small slit in the curtains. Your eyes fluttered open and then closed again. You laid there in a beautiful mix of sleep and awake when suddenly you realized you were late for work. You sat up and became perplexed at your surroundings, this was definitely not your room.
Wait, where am I… you started to wonder.
You looked over to see Robyn lying next to you, still asleep looking quite peaceful and hugging her Chimmy plushie. Then you realized you weren’t at home, and this wasn’t just any day, this was the day you were going to meet Stray Kids.
Your heart began to speed up at your sudden realization. You looked around the room and empty cans of hard cider littered the bedside table. Last night’s pad Thai was sitting on the dresser, probably harboring god knows how many bacteria after sitting out at room temperature all night. You felt a tinge of nausea at the thought of it, or any food for that matter.
Oh god. Am I going to be able to eat today? I have to eat, I’ll never be able to stand in line and make it through the concert if I don’t eat. Let alone have the strength to survive MEETING THEM at hi-touch.
You pushed your hair behind your ears, closed your eyes and focused on your breathing.
Not today, anxiety. It’s too early for this bullshit.
Your therapist had taught you to talk to your anxiety like it was a person. Speaking of him, God bless that man for listening to you over the past several months preparing for this day. You had drilled him for an endless amount of coping mechanisms in order make sure that you, quite literally, didn’t faint when you met the nine boys who seemingly occupied your every thought.
You rolled out of bed as cautiously as you could, so you didn’t wake Robyn. You walked to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. Your hair was stuck to the side of your head and you had sleep still in the corners of your eyes. You decided to take a shower and think about what to have for breakfast.
The hot water beat into your skin and steam began to fill the bathroom. You inhaled deeply. Trying to focus on the present and not psych yourself out about the night ahead.
You’re just giving them a high five. Hundreds of fans will get to do the same. They definitely won’t remember you, you’ll blend in with the millions of other girls who are desperately in love with them.
This thought calms you for a moment. Being rational in situations of stress wasn’t particularly your strong suit, so you were happy with this little victory.
When you got out of the shower you checked your phone. You had several notifications from Instagram from realstraykids. Hyunjin was posting selfies and talking about being excited for the concert tonight. Swiping through the pictures he took with other members, Chris got your attention. His hair was a golden blonde and was starting to grow so long, it looked like a borderline mullet with the way it was styled.
“Chris with a mullet steals my soul!!!!” you commented on the picture and then put your phone away.
You walked back into the room and Robyn was awake. You took one look at her and burst into the most high pitched squeal you could manage.
Well. Being calm was nice while it lasted.
“Good god, y/n. Are you gonna be like this all day?” Robyn asked, already looking done with your shit.
Robyn didn’t originally stan Stray Kids. You introduced them to her after you got the tickets. You had been to kpop concerts with her in the past so she seemed like the obvious choice to go with you. You had invited Robyn over a couple months ago and had a “hard intro to Stray Kids” Youtube watching session. Which had included videos like “stray kids on crack” and “a super shitty and unhelpful guide to stray kids.” She eventually chose two biases, Minho and Jisung. When she had told you later that night you were overjoyed because you had predicted who she would bias.
“NO WAY!!!!” you had screeched, “I texted my friend earlier and predicted you would bias them! Just so I could show you when I was right!”
What could you say, you love Robyn, but she has a certain type that always wrecks her. Pretty baby faces and strong vocals. You couldn’t blame her though, they were both an excellent choice.
You snapped back to the present.
“Uh no. I’m calm, I just, uh… yeah I’m gonna be like this all day.” You confessed.
Thank God I have a friend brave enough to put up with me.
The morning went by faster than you thought it would. You all ordered breakfast and spent the morning watching Jinyoung’s new kdrama. You wanted to get to the venue early-ish because even though you had good tickets, you were still GA and didn’t want to be shoved completely to the back of your section.
You had spent months picking the perfect outfit that you would feel confident in to meet them. It was May so you weren’t sure about the weather, but you decided to bank on it being hot outside. You chose a sleeveless shirt that was metallic gold, with a bow that tied around the front and buttoned down. You had also chosen a skort set that looked like a black mini-skirt but actually had shorts underneath and low-top combat boots to complete the look. You curled your hair and tried to give it as much volume as possible. Not that it would matter, you knew it would be matted to your head with sweat by the end of the concert. But hey, you gotta look good for the pics for the ‘gram, right?
You arrived at the venue and was baking outside under the morning sun, it was sweltering, you didn’t expect this for May. Your skin was baking under the late spring sun. You definitely had a sunburn and had only been in line for an hour.
Why on Earth did I wear a tank top...I’m not gonna be able to raise my arm to high five them without the smell knocking them down!
Suddenly an image of Jeongin falling backward at the smell of your body odor made you laugh out loud. You could see the headlines now, “kpop fangirl’s body odor causes singer to faint.” I mean, it would be hilarious, mortifying, but hilarious.
The concert was a blur, as always. You sang along to all the words you knew and your voice felt hoarse towards the end. You couldn’t believe how close you were to them. The venue was much smaller than you had anticipated. The light was shining off of them and their sweat made them glisten. You were so close you could see their muscles rippling under their denim when they danced.
Felix began talking to the fans about how much he loves us and wants to keep performing well for us. Felix and Changbin are my biases so I was completely engulfed in his cute Aussie accent being spoken 40 feet from me. It was almost too much. The members were fanned out across the stage while he talked and Chris drifted over to the side I was on. The girls and boys around me went wild trying to speak to him but he probably couldn’t hear them.
Rude. My baby Felix is having a moment and y’all are acting like idiots trying to talk over him.
Robyn elbowed me hard in the rib.
“Y/n,” she breathed, “Chris is staring in our direction.”
You looked over and locked eyes with him. You froze. You always thought you knew what you would do if you came face to face with one of your idols. But you were wrong. You didn’t feel the way you had predicted at all. You thought your knees would buckle. You thought you would scream or perhaps cry. But you didn’t. You couldn’t describe the feeling that came over you under his gaze. You couldn’t describe it other than feeling totally confident and empowered for the first time in a long time. You realized you needed to react before he looked away so you winked and attempted to look sexy. Then he raised an eyebrow at you, kept your gaze and went back to get in line for the next song.
WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT! WHY DID I WINK? WHO DOES THAT OH MY GOD.
You were going though it inside and Robyn could tell.
“Um, what was that?? Girl, you just had an interaction with him!” Robyn whispered in your ear.
You looked around and none of the concert-goers around you seemed to notice. No one was looking at you. You began to wonder if you imagined it. Your cheeks were burning a fiery red and your stomach felt like it was being assaulted with a swarm of butterflies.
How am I going to face him at hi-touch after that?? God y/n you were supposed to try to blend in.
You told your inner voice to fuck off, just like your therapist had taught you. But the rest of the concert, you couldn’t keep your eyes off Chris.
You were standing in line for hi-touch and your knees were buckling. You felt like your entire body was on edge and your insides were being electrocuted.
“You’re going to pass out if you keep holding your breath, y/n.” Robyn quietly reminded you. You suddenly realized you had been holding your breath.
“How did I get here? Maybe we should just run.” You said in a panicked voice.
Robyn looked you up and down like you had just spoken another language.
“Y/n, we’re not being marched to our deaths, we’re meeting this band that you have been obsessing over for months! Get it together! Breathe!” Robyn said while starting to shake you.
She’s right. What the hell is wrong with you. You paid so much money for these tickets and your bank account is still recovering. You’re doing this.
The line was starting to move faster than you would like. You got closer and closer to where you knew the boys were standing. You saw them in the distance and suddenly realized how tall they were in real life. You should’ve anticipated this since you already knew you were shorter than the shortest member.
They’re just people. They’re just boys. You talk to boys all the time.
You started to calm down. Until you locked eyes with Chris in the distance.
What was it about his gaze that made you take on a totally different attitude and mindset? Five seconds earlier you were contemplating running again. Now it felt like all of Earth’s gravity was holding you here in this one spot, like this was the only place you were ever supposed to be at this moment in time. You felt confident under his gaze, you felt bold.
You’re still not sure what possessed you, but you broke the gaze to start searching through your purse. You found a receipt and quickly ripped a small piece of the end. The line was moving and you were forced to walk while ransacking your purse. You finally found a pen. You tried to be as nonchalant as you could so you didn’t attract attention from other fans.
As sneakily as you could, you quickly scribbled: Kakao y/n0325.
Good god, why did I put their debut date in my name on there…I’m such a psycho. That’s so embarrassing.
But you didn’t have time to ponder on that because it was almost your turn. You didn’t have a plan. You didn’t know how you were going to get this to him without being noticed, but you did know that it felt right and you wanted to do it. Chris was the last member in the lineup.
Woojin was first. You had already planned out what you were going to say to each of them. You got up to him and his chocolate brown hair was gleaming in the fluorescence. Your hands met and you felt your mind go blank, he was smiling at you as you grappled with your words in your head.
“YOUR VOICE IS LIKE HONEY,” you blurted out, half-yelling at the poor man.
He just laughed and said thank you as you moved on.
Minho was looking at you smiling with his hand up. You didn’t struggle as long with finding words this time.
“I’m so proud of you, I love you to death,” You said as you passed by.
He laughed and said thank you in the cutest accent you’ve ever heard.
Changbin was next. Your bias, which made your thoughts become even more erratic than they had been before. You just started smiling uncontrollably and said “Hiiiiii, I love you Changbinnie” and he looked back at you fondly and said he loved you too.
You were face to face with Hyunjin before you realized it and my, was he good looking, it was like an angel was literally standing in front of you.
“You’re even cuter in person,” you said as fast as you could while touching hands with him. He just laughed and nodded in response.
You couldn’t think of anything else, your mind was at overload when you met Felix, Jisung, Jeongin and Seungmin. So you just told them you loved them as fast and as many times as you could.
When you got to Chris, you finally looked up at him and felt a shiver rip through your core. Your heart felt like it had dropped into your stomach. You felt like you were in an elevator that was falling down with reckless abandon. You raised your right hand up to give him a high five. Your hand was empty. But at the last second you switched and raised your left hand up as quickly as you could and the piece of paper was between your hands. You moved your hand slightly so he could feel it and finally spoke.
“It’s so nice to finally meet you, but this just isn’t long enough.” You said with all the confidence you could muster.
His eyes sparked as he realized what you were doing. He moved his hand and quickly closed it and put it in his pocket.
“Oh yes, I agree,” he said, very coolly with that unmistakable smile that he always shows the world. The smile that you had become so fond of over the last several months. The smile that gave fans hope all around the world and now, at this moment, he was smiling because of you.
For the second time that night, Robyn looked at you in disbelief as you rounded the corner in the hall way exiting the venue.
“Y/n, you’re the smoothest human alive,” she said with a shocked expression on her face.
You suddenly busted into cackling laughter. It overwhelmed you and wracked your body. Bubbling up from your core. You couldn’t control it. You’re sure you were unnerving everyone near you with your maniacal laughter. Everyone knows, nothing comes good after maniacal laughter. You laughed until your abdominal muscles ached, and tears were spilling down your cheeks.
“That was the best time of my life,” you said in between bouts of laughter.
Robyn started laughing too and you two called a cab to head back to your hotel.
You tried not to dwell on your interaction with Chris. He had been nice and a bit flirty, but he was like that with all Stays. You had watched countless youtube compilations of your idols flirting with fans. It was normal. It was nothing special. That’s what you told yourself when you arrived back in your hotel room and your heart was still fluttering in your chest, refusing to return to its normal pace.
Hey, I’m going at my own pace, Chris would at least be proud of that.
You suddenly started laughing again at your own thoughts and told Robyn you were getting in the shower. She was probably very thankful for this, after the events of the day and the copious amounts of sweat you had shed. You turned on your slow kpop playlist and once again let the steam fill up the room while the water beat down on you. You put your head up against the tile wall of the shower and let the water envelop you.
I had an interaction with Chris. Fans have interactions with their idols all the time at concerts. He was very charismatic, you already knew that. Stop overthinking it and just be happy you made these memories with them, y/n.
Your heart rate began to slow and you focused on the water and the steady hum the shower made. Tomorrow you and Robyn were going into the city and it was going to be a good day. You were going to have a good day with your friend and recount concert memories. Life was good.
You stepped out of the shower and grabbed your phone to turn off the playlist. Butterfly by BTS was playing and you were about to sing along for a few words when you checked your notifications.
You had a few comments on your Instagram posts but your eyes glazed over when you saw what was next.
A notification from Kakao, a notification from none other than Christopher Bang himself.

Raeva Oum
Awoken - Warlock - Voidwalker
Resurrected - January 5th
Ghost - Valentine
Affiliation - Fireteam Ranger
Status - Active
Voice/Faceclaim - Katie McGrath
Noteworthy Physical Traits - Slim, curvy figure, stark white glowing eyes, and red markings that adorn her face.
Background - Raeva's story begins much like any Guardian. Her Ghost, Valentine, discovered her body while exploring the surface of the Moon, inside old ruins of a Lunar colony among a crashed ship. When she was revived, it took her some time to get acclimated to her new existence. In that time, she began to explore the colony, taking in as much information and knowledge as she could.
This did not last long. The Hive quickly found her location and began their attack. Using her new found powers of the Light alone, she fought back the first wave, but just barely. Before the next wave, she found an old ship, hidden away inside the colony, and took off. It would be some time before she could return safely to her place of rebirth.
Valentine took her to the Last Safe City on Earth, protected by the Traveler. She arrived at the Tower and she met with the Speaker. It was he who explained her new role as a Guardian, one that Raeva came to understand better in time.
She formed a Fireteam with two other Guardians at the time, two Exos, another Warlock and a Titan. Their names were Alo-2 and Gram-9. They remained together for some time, running Vanguard operations together, before Raeva decided that it was finally time she return to the Moon.
Alone, she returned to the Lunar surface as close to the old colony as she could get. As she approached closer, fighting off the Fallen as well as Hive patrolling the surface. It was here where she met the Hunter by the name of Felix Byrd, who was also investigating the Hive on the Moon. The two of them ventured to the colony, where Raeva sought to learn more about that place as well as what she was doing here. Eventually they found her crashed ship where Valentine discovered her. Felix's Ghost, Buck, noted that the ship was one belonging to the Awoken of the Reef that made a pilgrimage across the Galaxy to Earth, and Raeva must have been one of them.
After spending some time there, they pressed on to continue the investigation on the Hive. This led them to stopping a ritual being performed beneath the hollowed surface and also to meeting the Exo Stranger, who directed them to Venus. Raeva noted that her two previous Fireteam members were on Venus. The two of them joined with Alo and Gram and began an investigation against the Vex. This investigation eventually led them to the heart of the Black Garden. But not before getting help from the Awoken of the Reef, and their Queen, Mara Sov.
Meeting with the Awoken brought forth some strange feelings for Raeva. A sense of familiarity and home. It left her quite torn, as she finally began to realize her Awoken heritage, which was clashing with her life as a Guardian on Earth. But she was able to push those feelings and focus on the mission in front of her.
The newly formed Fireteam Ranger, joined by a Sunbreaker Titan named Goldie, destroyed the heart of the Black Garden. For the next several years, the Fireteam faced several threats across the system.
When the Red War began, Raeva lost her Light the same as all Guardians. Eventually she regrouped with the rest of Ranger, having lost Alo to the Cabal invasion but gaining a new Hunter named River. Across the duration of the Red War against the Red Legion, eventually defeating Dominus Ghaul, freeing the Traveler, and taking back their Light.
A year later, the death of Cayde-6, the Hunter Vanguard, eventually led Raeva to the most sacred site of the Awoken people; the Dreaming City. Raeva took this as a sign that maybe it was time she learn more about her people, and perhaps more about herself.
Personality - On the surface, Raeva may seem quiet and almost irritable at times. But under that, she is an incredibly passionate person, shown through her interests, her books, and even the Light itself. She seeks to have a deeper understanding of the Light, Void Light specifically, and deeply enjoys learning new things.
Fun Fact(s) -
- Raeva's preferred weapons are Auto Rifles, Sidearms, SMGs, and swords. Among her arsenal is the Awoken ceremonial sword, Black Talon.
- One of Raeva's biggest interests, borderline obsessions, is Earth history. Specifically, pre-Golden Age history. This stems from her revival on the Moon, in one of the several abandoned Lunar sites. She has compiled entire books on her knowledge of pre-Golden Age Earth, with books that she has either found or written herself.
- Although she often times dips into the Arc subclass of Stormcaller, she always finds herself returning to the Voidwalker path. She finds it the most interesting and, oddly, the most comforting. The Awoken were said to be born where Light and Dark meet, so she uses this comparison to explain her comfort in Void Light.

Memory Loss or Fear Inducer for Isaac?
For the @badthingshappenbingo prompt thingie. Send me Golden Sun prompts for it!
Isaac hadgrown increasingly more frustrated as they had delved deeper and deeper intothe depths of Crossbone Isle, fighting off beast after horrid beast as theyplundered the various treasures and rescued the Djinni trapped within it.
The placeseemed to get darker and shadows seemed to warp with each flight of stairs theydescended, a phenomenon that only seemed to grow in frequency once Isaacacquired a blade on the ninth floor of the accursed island.
He held thesword tightly in his grip, finding some measure of security with it as shadowstwisted around him and he swore he could hear whispering underneath the thingshis party said to him as they approached an underground lake and dilapidatedship.
As theyboarded he swore he could hear the lapping of the still lake laughing at him, whispering with each wave and wearing upon his woes. He gripped his new swordmore tightly as they began to explore the ship, each creaking floorboardbeginning to sound like a muted scream beneath him.
Isaacblinked and shook his head as he was sure the shadows had just formed into somecolossal skeleton before his eyes, where once there had been nothing.
“Isaac!”
Isaac foundhimself shoved to the ground as a blade easily bigger than his entire body crashedinto the floorboards he had been standing on a moment ago. A series of hauntinggiggles and laughter echoed around him as he got back to his feet, staring upat the very real skeleton that had just tried to cleave him in two.
Thelaughter and whispers were getting louder.
Isaac andhis party readied themselves and began to channel their Psynergy and strike atthis colossal master of the ship, steel seeming to pass harmlessly through thecreature more often than not as it retaliated with attacks and Psynergy farstronger than they could inflict upon it.
They’re going to die.
You lead them to their death.
Your fault.
You brought them here.
Isaac frozein place as he looked around, clutching his sword tighter in his hands, tryingto find the source of the whispers. Was it from this skeleton…?
Isaac tookthe brunt of a Spark Plasma as hestood their frozen by the voices he was hearing. He staggered to his kneesbefore feeling Mia’s Psynergy weaving his singed flesh back together, soothingevery pain receptor in his body.
How can you defend them if you can’t defendyourself?
You’re their leader and you’re freezing up?
Why did you even come here?
Isaacrolled to the side, striking out at the skeleton with a Stone Spire as Garet leapt at it with his blade. The creatureshrugged off the attacks and retaliated with more than twice the force thantheir combined efforts had.
Felix is probably lighting the Beacon rightnow.
You’re dooming Weyard every second you’re here.
Were you too afraid to face them without thetreasures here?
You know you’re not strong enough.
“Shut up!”
“Isaac?” He wasn’t sure which of his party members hadcalled to him and he didn’t care. The sooner this thing was dealt with thesooner they could leave and the sooner he could start feeling sane again.
Isaacredoubled his efforts to kill the skeletal warrior. Its bloodstained bones andglowing yellow eyes came down upon the Venus Adept, a ghostly fist connectingwith his stomach as a blade swung out at his friends.
“You knew you would get them killed on Venus.”
“Better to have them die here.”
“You’re going to get them killed.”
Thewhispers and laughter only grew more and more frequent as the battleprogressed, ringing in Isaac’s head more loudly than the echoes of battle now.More often than not they made him freeze, leaving him very open to attack, buthis friends were there with him to keep him alive through the fight.
Isaacyelled out, tears in his eyes as the whispers started to coalesce in theshadows, showing him images of his friends dead. Burned. Bloody. Crushed.Eaten. Each image more horrifying and gruesome than the last as they alllaughed at him, each one his fault.
He swunghis sword at the beast, watching as ghostly fire erupted from it and quicklydescended on the skeleton from every angle. Each flame seemed to eat throughthe creature, bones disintegrating and armour melting away with every lick offlame that brushed against it.
The groupquickly assaulted the monster as it burned away, every strike of steel andPsynergy banishing more and more of its form, until with a final ear-splittingscream the head of the beast disintegrated into shadow.
Isaac pantedheavily, the whispers and shadows still surrounding him, but fading slowly.
“Let’s get out of here.”
Garet, hethought, spoke up and Isaac was more than ready to agree. They grabbed theirreward from the ship and quickly rushed away from the ship and back to thesurface, eager to escape the island after everything they had been through.
But thewhispers never really stopped.
“You’re going to get them killed.”
“And you’re going to do it…”

Just like Bill and Fleur. Make framed wizard posters of your wedding party to decorate, it'll look so cool.
You can also decorate with cauldrons and luggage, and potion bottles. Have an owl post slot for your wedding cards, and finally, give your guests chocolate as wedding favors to keep those Demeanors away.
Mirror of the Erased wedding arch. Carry your rings in a Golden Snitch so that it opens at the close of your single life. You're a married bitch now.
Having a Marauder's Map-inspired wedding invitation. Have your guests sign a Marauder's Map for your guestbook, or have your guests write a favorite memory of you and put it in a vial.

My Life Changed When I Met You Ch. 10
Also on ff.net and AO3.
March 2026
Delphine woke up early, alone in her own apartment. She stretched out, knowing she needed to get up. She had an early meeting today and could not be late. She got up and sauntered into the kitchen to make coffee. She looked over at the clock, chuckling to herself as she saw it was only 6:15. She thought about Cosima and how she would never be seen at this hour of the day. She could hear her voice in her head...That’s why I’m a professor, and all my classes are in the afternoon, Del.
As she prepared her breakfast, she thought about the brunette, and about the last few months. She’d never been so happy in her life. Cosima was something special, and she found her head floating in the clouds whenever she thought about her. She was always on her mind. She had been for years, but now, the connection they shared was deeper, stronger. It felt amazing.
They spent most nights together, but when Delphine needed to get up early, she didn’t want to bother Cosima, so they would spend the time apart. Waking up without her always felt weird after spending so much time together. She found herself reaching over in the morning to feel the empty side of the bed before she even opened her eyes, always forgetting for a moment that Cosima wasn’t there and pouting to herself.
She felt like a teenager again. She was almost 40, yet Cosima made her feel like this was her first love. In a way, it was.
She wanted to wish Cosima a good morning, but she knew if she called her now, the brunette would never let her forget it, so she scarfed down her breakfast and jumped in the shower.
When she got out, she found she had a text message.
Got up to pee. I know you’re up. I miss you in my bed.
Delphine grinned and felt a warmth run through her body. She texted back.
I miss you too. Good morning, mon amour.
Delphine got dressed quickly as Cosima answered.
Skip work. Come cuddle with me. I’m cold.
She chuckled to herself as she responded.
I wish I could. I’ll see you later.
She didn’t receive a response and shook her head, knowing Cosima had fallen back to sleep already. She felt a lightness in her heart as she ran out the door.
---
April 2026
Cosima woke up, opening her eyes to blonde curls, Delphine lying on her stomach, her arms above her head under the pillow, facing away from her. She smiled as she moved in closer, throwing her arm and leg over her girlfriend, her hips shifting half on top of the taller woman’s body.
“Mmm,” Delphine hummed as Cosima gripped her tightly.
“Sorry,” Cosima whispered, “Didn’t mean to wake you up. I just wanted to hold you.” She loved the idea of Delphine being the first thing she saw when she opened her eyes in the morning. It was the most wonderful feeling.
“It’s ok,” the blonde mumbled, her eyes still closed. “I’m surprised you woke up before me,” she joked.
“Yeah, me too,” Cosima chuckled, laying a gentle kiss to Delphine’s bare back.
Delphine sighed and rolled over within Cosima’s embrace, her hands moving to the brunette’s hips and tugged her closer. “Morning,” she breathed before pressing her lips to Cosima’s in a short, sweet kiss.
Cosima smiled. “Hey, would you want to go have a picnic today? Go to the Golden Gate Bridge? Like we used to?” she asked, rubbing lovingly down Delphine’s arm.
“You want to go back there?” Delphine replied.
“Well, I remember how much you used to love it. I think our first summer, we went there like 12 times,” Cosima laughed. “And it’s supposed to be really nice today. I thought we could relax together.”
Delphine grinned, her sleepy eyes full of love for the woman in front of her. “That sounds wonderful.”
---
They picked up food on the way and laid out a blanket when they got to the park, sitting down and looking out onto the bridge in front of them. It was a beautiful day, barely any clouds in the sky and the two women sat next to each other and ate.
Once they finished, Cosima laid back on the blanket, propping herself up with her elbows underneath her. She reached out for Delphine, who was sitting cross legged next to her, looking out at the bridge. “Hey, Del,” she whispered.
“Hmm,” Delphine hummed as she looked down toward the grinning brunette.
Cosima squeezed her side. “Whatcha thinking about?”
“Oh, just how peaceful it is here. I think this is the first place I realized that I belong here,” she told her, “When we would come, you made me feel like I belonged.”
Cosima sat up and wrapped her arms around Delphine’s torso, leaning in to kiss her cheek. She brought her hand up to Delphine’s chin and brought her face toward her. “Hey,” she started, “I’ve been thinking.”
“Uh oh,” Delphine chuckled, placing her hand on Cosima’s knee. “About?”
Cosima smirked, trying to hide her nerves. “Del, um, so like, when I woke up this morning, and I saw you, I got this feeling, like this really giddy feeling in my stomach, and I realized something,” she explained, “I realized I want to wake up next to you every morning, not just some mornings. And like, I want to find your hair in everything...well I already do...but anyway...I want your stuff everywhere so even when you’re not home I can be around it and know you’ll come home soon, to our home, and I want my apartment to smell like you...well, our apartment...and um, I guess that was a really long way of me asking you—”
“Yes,” Delphine interjected, giggling at Cosima’s rambling.
“I didn’t ask you anything yet!” Cosima laughed.
“Well, sometimes I can’t wait for you to finish one of your long rants, and I just need to speak up,” Delphine smiled, pulling at Cosima’s sides. “But go ahead, ask me.”
Cosima grinned. “Del, move in with me?” she asked, her eyes sparkling.
Delphine leaned in, brushing her lips against Cosima’s, excitement running through her body. “Yes,” she breathed before pressing her lips into the brunette’s.
Cosima returned the kiss and couldn’t help her lips from curling up into a smile. She pulled back. “Fuck, I love you so much,” she stated.
Delphine giggled and shook her head. “You and your dirty mouth.”
“You love my dirty mouth,” Cosima teased, wiggling her eyebrows.
“So fucking cheeky,” Delphine joked.
Cosima gasped, pretending to be offended. “You’re stuck with me now...for real. Once you move in with me, that’s it. I hope you’re prepared.”
“Oh, I am prepared, chérie,” Delphine replied, “Prepared to wake you up to exercise with me every day at 6am, and make sure you are eating healthy...no more Eskimo Pies.”
Cosima frowned. “Ok, maybe I should rethink this,” she joked. “Unless your version of exercise and eating healthy is insinuating something else that I might like more,” she winked.
Delphine laughed, pulling her into a hug, resting Cosima's head on her chest. “What am I going to do with you?”
“Love me?”
Delphine sighed. “Always.”
---
June 2026
“You almost ready?”
Cosima leaned over the sink, applying her makeup. “Mhmm, one sec,” she replied.
“We don’t want to be late,” Delphine told her.
Cosima put the cap back on her eyeliner and came out of the bathroom. “All set,” she smiled, looking over her girlfriend. “Del, you look amazing,” she told her, eyeing her curves in her tight black dress.
“You do too,” Delphine echoed, moving in to squeeze gently at Cosima’s hips under her form fitting red dress.
“Come on,” Cosima said, “Scotty is waiting.”
It was Scott’s 40th birthday and his wife was throwing him a huge bash. They arrived at the venue, strolling inside to see plenty of tables and chairs along with a substantial dance floor and a DJ. The party was catered and they were immediately given glasses of wine by one of the waiters as they walked in.
“Holy shit, this is fancy,” Cosima exclaimed.
Delphine leaned in to Cosima’s ear. “Well, when you are one of the top scientists in your field and are responsible for many scientific breakthroughs, you tend to get paid quite well,” she told her, chuckling.
They mingled, wishing Scott a happy birthday and saying hello to their other friends before sitting down as dinner was served. Sarah and Cal were there, along with Felix, who brought his new boyfriend, Colin. They chatted and enjoyed each other’s company before the DJ turned up the music and most of their table got up to dance.
Cosima stood up, reaching her hand out to Delphine. “Dr. Cormier,” she propositioned, “Come dance with me.”
“No, no, Cosima,” Delphine whined.
“Yes, yes, come on,” Cosima told her, grabbing her hand and pulling her up.
Delphine allowed herself to be pulled up and dragged to the dance floor, Cosima pulling Delphine’s arms around her waist as she threw her own arms up around the taller woman’s neck.
Cosima leaned closer as they swayed together. “You are so gorgeous,” she whispered, “I’m pretty sure everyone in this room is jealous of me for being able to dance with you.”
Delphine chuckled and blushed, her hands pressing into Cosima’s lower back. She looked down into Cosima’s gaze, feeling butterflies in her stomach. She still felt like it was the first time Cosima had looked at her like that.
“Holy shit,” Delphine heard someone say. She looked to her right, seeing Paul standing there, a tray in his hand, dressed in a catering outfit. Both women saw him as he came closer. “Delphine Cormier? And Cosima? Damn.”
Delphine pulled back from Cosima for a moment, flashing her most polite smile. “Paul,” she stated.
“Wow,” he replied, looking her up and down.
Cosima did not like the way he was eyeing her and felt herself starting to get defensive. Delphine could feel the change in the brunette’s body language and she squeezed her hand.
“You work here?” Delphine asked, trying her best to have a civilized conversation.
“Oh, my dad owns this catering company. I usually don’t work as a waiter anymore. I’m management, you know, but I had to fill in at the last minute,” he explained in a cocky way, “I’m going to own this company one day.”
“Good for you,” Delphine answered.
Paul nodded, looking between Delphine and Cosima. “Never would’ve pegged you for a lesbian, Delphine,” he chuckled.
Delphine clenched her jaw. “Well, I’m not a lesbian. I’m bisexual, not that I really need to explain myself to you,” she stated, firmly.
Paul leaned in, like they were old friends just shooting the shit, and nudged her arm with his elbow. “Oh, does that mean you’d do it with a guy and a girl at the same time? Is that what you guys are looking for? Because I’m totally in.”
Cosima couldn’t keep to herself anymore. She stepped forward, putting herself in between Paul and Delphine. “Alrighty Paul, I think you’ve established your ignorance perfectly well. You should probably be going now,” she told him with a fake smile.
Paul looked offended, thinking what he said was just fine. “What? It’s a perfectly valid question. She’s bi, isn’t she?”
Cosima’s rage bubbled up and she took another step toward him, the size difference between them almost laughable, but she didn’t care. “Ok, you really want to get into this now, don’t you?” she spat, getting into his face. “This isn’t about you and your dick. Bisexual women don’t exist just so you can sleep with two women at once. And no, we don’t want you to watch. No, we don’t want you anywhere near us. We’re perfectly satisfied in a way I’m sure no girl has ever been with you.”
Paul’s mouth fell open. “Jeez, you’re a jerk!” he responded.
“I’m the jerk? Why don’t you go back to your job before I report you to daddy?” Cosima fumed.
“Whatever,” Paul muttered and walked away.
Cosima stared as she watched him, her mind coming back to reality as she turned around to look at Delphine.
Delphine’s mouth was open as well, a stunned look on her face.
“Ugh, men like that infuriate me,” she huffed before stepping close to Delphine and looking up at her. She took her hands in hers. “Sorry, was that too much?”
Delphine shook her head and smirked, leaning in toward Cosima’s ear. “No, it was sexy. I like when you defend me like that. Can I take you home and show you my gratitude?”
Cosima felt a shiver run down her spine as she bit her lip. “Uh, yeah you can.”
---
As soon as they walked into the apartment, Delphine closed the door and grabbed Cosima’s hips, pushing her forcefully against the wall and pressing the length of her body against the smaller woman as she kissed her. Cosima felt a surge of desire run through her as she fervently returned the kiss, loving that Delphine was taking control.
Cosima tried to move her hands to Delphine’s back but the blonde was faster and gripped Cosima’s wrists, bringing her hands above her head against the wall, leaving her open and vulnerable. Cosima moaned as Delphine bit down on her neck before bringing her mouth to the brunette’s ear.
“You look so fucking sexy in that dress,” Delphine breathed, “I’ve wanted to fuck you all night.”
“Holy shit,” Cosima groaned, Delphine’s boldness making her knees give out. Over the past few months, Delphine had become more and more daring, and Cosima especially loved when she talked dirty to her.
Cosima tried to move her hands, but Delphine had her in an iron grip. “Ah, ah,” the blonde teased, “You’re mine.” She tried to press her thigh in between Cosima’s legs but her dress was too tight to get where she wanted to.
Cosima moaned, pressing herself forward as Delphine chuckled. “I guess we’re going to have to do something about this dress,” she groaned. She pulled Cosima’s hands away from the wall and led her to the bedroom.
Once they got to the room, Delphine unzipped Cosima’s dress, undoing her own and slipping both off, leaving the two women in only their underwear.
Cosima stepped toward Delphine, trying to pull her close, but Delphine pushed her back onto the bed, climbing on top immediately and attacking her lips. She reached her hand down to graze over Cosima’s underwear, feeling her wetness through the fabric.
Cosima gasped, shivers running through her as her hips bucked up involuntarily.
Delphine took her hand away and Cosima whimpered. She began kissing down her body roughly, sucking on her skin in all the places she knew Cosima loved. She moved lower, pulling Cosima’s underwear off before coming back up to suck at her pulse point, her finger moving to run up through her wetness.
“Fuck, Delphine,” Cosima panted, opening her legs wider.
“That’s right. I’m going to eat you until you come in my mouth,” Delphine whispered in her ear.
“Oh my god,” Cosima moaned, as she felt her desire grow. “Jesus, Del.”
Delphine moved lower, situating herself between Cosima’s legs and pressing her mouth to her core, lightly at first, flicking and teasing, listening to the brunette’s reactions.
Cosima felt the pleasure radiate as she threw her head back, letting out a series of moans and whimpers. She bent her knees, letting them fall open, as she tangled her hand in Delphine’s curls, urging her on. Delphine’s hot, wet mouth was making her feel incredible.
Delphine stuck to her motions, letting Cosima’s hips dictate the intensity of the pressure as she enveloped Cosima’s clit in her mouth. The moment she heard Cosima’s breathing pick up, she inserted her finger, thrusting mercilessly as she knew the brunette was close.
“Ungg...ohhh,” Cosima moaned loudly, her mind only focused on Delphine’s skillful tongue and nimble fingers. “I’m close...oh god,” she breathed.
Delphine kept up her rhythm until Cosima broke, grunting and panting, her hand digging into Delphine’s head as her hips jolted into the blonde’s face.
Cosima tugged at Delphine’s head, jerking her hips away as her body got too sensitive and Delphine let out a small gasp at her hair being pulled.
“Oh, shit...fuck,” Cosima panted, “Shit, sorry, did I hurt you?”
Delphine looked up at her. “No, no it’s ok,” she chuckled, as she pulled out, coming back up to Cosima’s face. “I love making you come,” she whispered before kissing her, Cosima tasting herself on Delphine’s lips and moaning.
Cosima pulled back, catching her breath, her body in a blissful state. “Ok, if you talk to me like that when you fuck me,” she breathed, “Well...fuck…” She wrapped her arms around Delphine and pressed close to her, unable to come up with any words to describe her feelings.
Delphine giggled and kissed her cheek before laying her head down on her shoulder. “Good?”
“Fuck yeah,” Cosima answered.
“My goodness, you become such a potty mouth when my fingers are inside you,” Delphine teased.
Cosima laughed. “Is this what I get when I stand up for you? Because if so, I’ll definitely do it more often.”
“Well, it didn’t hurt,” she smiled, “It was hot, you getting all defensive.”
“I’m guessing you may need some attention then,” Cosima smirked, moving her hand slowly down between them, her fingers grazing Delphine’s stomach on the way down before she reached her destination. She found slick folds and moaned. “Fuuuuck, Del, you’re so wet.”
“I am aching for you,” Delphine whispered.
Cosima didn’t wait any longer. She got a surge of energy, flipping them over so she was on top, pulling off Delphine’s panties and letting her fingers glide over the wet skin as the blonde groaned underneath her.
“Yes,” Delphine panted, “Please.”
“Tell me exactly what you want,” Cosima whispered, nibbling on her earlobe.
“I want to feel you inside,” Delphine pleaded, “I need you to fuck me.”
Cosima knew her girlfriend was more than ready for her as she thrust a finger in, adding a second one after a moment, causing Delphine’s hips to jolt up and a series of whimpers to come out of her mouth. Cosima laid her torso on top of the blonde’s as she fucked her, giving her as much skin contact as possible. Delphine gripped at her back, digging her fingers in hard enough to leave a mark.
“Yes, yes,” Delphine breathed, “Oh, yes.”
Cosima gently grazed Delphine’s straining clit with her thumb to gauge the blonde’s reaction and when she groaned, she did it again.
She kept at it, sucking at Delphine’s neck as she brought her body closer to its peak. She knew Delphine wouldn’t last much longer as her breathing sped up, her pulse racing. “Come for me,” she ordered, “Come.”
Delphine had little control over her body as she came hard in Cosima’s hand, groaning as her body reached its maximum pleasure. She shook in Cosima’s arms, doing her best to hold onto her.
Her body finally fell limp and she smiled, chuckling to herself with her eyes closed.
Cosima wrapped her arm over Delphine’s torso and buried her face in her neck. “I. Love. You.” she whispered slowly, emphasizing each word.
“Mmm,” Delphine replied, unable to move a single muscle in her feeling of ecstasy.
Cosima smiled into soft skin and closed her eyes. “Thanks for tonight, baby,” she whispered, “I love being with you.”
Delphine smiled and took a deep breath. “Me too,” she spoke softly.
“God, you’ve exhausted me,” Cosima chuckled.
“Sleep, my love,” she whispered.
Cosima hummed, perfectly content to snuggle up to Delphine, the only person she ever wanted in this world. Her heart felt full and happy as she fell asleep.
---
January 2032
Cosima woke up to find the bed empty. She stretched and sauntered into the kitchen, seeing that Delphine had already made coffee. She noticed blonde curls outside the window on the front porch. She poured herself a cup of coffee and walked through the screen door to find her partner sitting, reading a book on their porch swing. Cosima grinned wide and sat next to her, placing her coffee on the table next to her.
“Morning, cutie,” she smiled.
“Morning, chėrie,” Delphine replied, leaning over to give her a kiss.
Cosima leaned back, enjoying the cool breeze. “We did it, Del.”
“Hmm?” Delphine asked, putting her book in her lap.
“We have a house,” Cosima grinned, her eyes gleaming.
They had moved in a few weeks ago, and were finally feeling like they had everything unpacked. It had been a lot of work, especially with both of them so busy at their jobs, but they got through it, and the payoff was worth it.
“It is so nice,” Delphine cooed, moving closer to wrap her arm around Cosima’s shoulders.
“Yeah, it is,” Cosima whispered, leaning her head on Delphine’s chest. She took a deep breath, feeling relaxed for the first time in a while, after being stressed out for so long.
Delphine planted a gentle kiss on Cosima’s forehead. “You know, we’ve been together for six years now,” she told her.
“Yeah, but it kind of feels like we’ve been together for like, 30 years, doesn’t it?” Cosima joked.
Delphine giggled. “Ah yes, this relationship has taken its toll on me,” she teased.
“You?” Cosima laughed, “What about me? I’ve been in love with you for 30 years!”
Delphine sighed. “So have I. It just took me a long time to admit it to myself,” she said, a more solemn tone in her voice.
Cosima grabbed her hand and squeezed gently. “But you did. And damn, am I grateful,” she chuckled.
Delphine took a deep breath. “Cosima,” she started, “Did you ever think...would you ever want to get married?”
Cosima sat up, looking into Delphine’s eyes intensely. “Wait, are you asking me to marry you?”
Delphine chuckled nervously. “I just wanted to bring it up. It’s been on my mind.”
“Oh, wow, I just thought...I don’t know, I didn’t think you’d want to get married again,” Cosima stated.
“Cosima, I was so young the first time I got married,” Delphine told her, “And I thought, maybe we could talk about it.”
Cosima grinned, pulling Delphine closer and rubbing their noses together. “Del, I would love to marry you,” she whispered.
“Yeah?” Delphine smiled.
“Yeah, you’re my life,” Cosima explained, “And I want you forever, and while we don’t necessarily need a piece of paper that says it, I wouldn’t mind.”
Delphine gripped the sides of Cosima’s head and pulled her in, pressing her lips to the brunette’s. “I want that too,” she breathed.
Cosima giggled, her love for the woman in front of her coursing through her. She couldn’t believe how this woman made her feel, even after all these years.
“I was thinking...I mean, if you want something else, please tell me...but maybe, we could just go to the courthouse and get married, just me and you, something special for just the two of us,” Delphine told her.
“That sounds absolutely perfect,” Cosima replied, “I don’t have any desire to have a big wedding or anything.” She brought her knees up to her chest, nuzzling into Delphine’s side as the blonde wrapped her arms completely around her.
“Ok,” Delphine smiled, “Just the two of us.”
Cosima let out a contented sigh. This was her happy place, lying in Delphine’s arms, feeling the blonde’s heart beat against her skin, listening to her slow breathing, rubbing gently at the back of her hand with her thumb. This was everything to her.
“I love you, Cosima,” Delphine whispered, squeezing tightly.
Cosima closed her eyes to memorize the feeling.
“I love you, too, Del.”

One of the problems being a music fan living in the far South West is that there are so few live music venues, so it was a pleasant surprise to see Kobra And The Lotus playing an independent pub venue not that far up the road, in the backwater town of Bridgwater, Somerset. It is such a shame more pub owners dont see the benefit of providing decent live music venues, with a powerful sound system and flexible lighting rig, but thank goodness the Cobblestones landlord has that foresight (and provides a damn good range of beer too!)
Proving how a local venue benefits the local music scene were first act (and judging by their relationship with the crowd, house band) Pretty Little Enemy. It’s almost impossible to not like a band with such a great name, but P.L.E. provide the image and music to turn that like to love. Vocalist Louise Body is the consummate rock chick. The bottle of tequila by the mic stand, the latex skirt, metal effect bra, and punk attitude, all catch your eye before the band kick into the first song. Ably backed by some shredding and riffing from the equally visually striking guitarist Georgia Bell, bear-like bassist Jason Coles, and drummer Ben Dean, their brief time on stage is a delight. Body puts the already enthusiastic crowd on “tit watch” as her stage attire does its best to leave her exposed, and there is even a small but enthusiastic mosh pit (a first for me for an opening band in this size venue!) To make a mark in this business you need a U.S.P. and Pretty Little Enemy have several. Check out their cleverly titled EP “Bitch PLEase”, and in particular “Vertebreak”, which shows their potential and vitality at its finest.
Brutai take a more cerebral approach to their music. We were treated to depths of complex keyboards, twin guitars, and thought provoking song craft. The Londoners, nominated for ‘Best New Band’ at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards, showed us why they are being talked about in some impressive circles. Vocalist Felix Lawrie switches impressively between a soft, tuneful style and a deep, growling metal roar. Lead guitarist Henry Ryan lays down layer after layer of complex guitar sounds and blends them with the works of keyboard player Alex Lorimer. The animation comes courtesy of dreadlocked bassist Christian Sturgess, and backing it all with some technically impressive drum patterns is Mathieu Bauer. This end of the spectrum isn’t usually my cup of tea to listen to, so it’s a real compliment to say I thoroughly enjoyed their set, and the range of songs they gave us. Set opener “Deep”, the soundstage of “Relapse” and the complex crescendo of “The Border” were my highlights of the set, and their 2016 album “Born” is definitely worth giving some ear time, if the idea of a young pretender to the prog/metal ranks appeals.
Before the show, I was part of a conversation with Kobra And The Lotus bassist Brad Kennedy, where he was talking about how they have played venues from 30 to 30,000 and try to treat them all the same. A laudable aim, but can a band really do that? Well, in the case of Kobra and the Lotus, they sure can! The Cobblestones is tiny, basically a skittle alley with speakers and lights, but the band hit the stage with the attitude of a festival headliner, and earned huge respect from me in the process. “Hello, Bridgewater”may never carry the weight of “Good Evening, Budokan”, or “Scream for me, Knebworth” but for one night it really did! This is a band loving what they do, and making sure they send the crowd, however big, home having seen a show.
Kobra Paige brings a more mature attitude to the business than her predecessor in P.L.E., with a kettle of hot water as refreshment and vocal support, rather than a bottle of tequila, and a stage costume that’s going nowhere she doesn’t want it to. She is just as energetic though, leaping, posing, preening, and leading the band with huge energy and commitment. The band behind her make the most of every inch of the tiny stage, and are as tight as any four musicians have a right to be. Opening with three songs from new album “Prevail I”; the massive, anthemic “Gotham”, pure head banger “TriggerPulse”, and “Specimen X”. Kobra’s voice is sublime, and Marcus Lee drives the sound from the back, with huge presence, my other half’s commenting that he looked like Khal Drogo! We leave the new album for some older material that shows just how underrated Kobra and her team are. Delights such as the almost Nightwishy “Soldier”, a snippet of Led Zep’s “Immigrant Song”, “You Don’t Know”, and “Prevail”, with its twin guitar attack, pepper the set, and the energy levels don’t drop for a second.
As leaving the stage involves walking through the crowd and out of the venue via the smoking area, Kobra announces that rather than play the game of waiting to be called back for an encore they will just keep going, so the band don’t even get a break before hitting the encores. Final song “50 Shades of Evil”, with its frantic guitar from Jasio Kulakowski and insane drumming from Lee, raises the energy level even higher, and is probably the best showcase of Kobra’s soaring vocals in the entire set.
I hope I get to see Kobra And The Lotus on a bigger stage sometime soon to see how their infectious energy and musical ability translate, but for a little pub in a sleepy backwater, known more for the Morrison’s delivery hub than heavy metal and flying hair, this was a cracking night out.
