Today was very restful and that was really great. And honestly even if I didn't make any sales at the market and felt really sad about that I still had a fun day!
I slept pretty well last night. James and Matt got back not long after I did my post. We hung out and I got to play tour guide of the apartment. Which I always enjoy. And after we got him set up for bed (including letting him pick out a plushie to sleep with) we all went to bed.
I woke up a little after 7. I was not thrilled but I knew we had things to do. Matt would stay behind to get a shower and me and James would load up and head out. Getting breakfast and over to the museum before 8.
It was skate day! We had three tables of skating things and everyone was so nice. Plus Ginny gave Ann the money we raised for her last week and she cried. It was just really nice that we got to do something for her.
I would wear my skates a lot of the day. My feet would be numb for a lot of it but I was having so much fun. The concrete under the pavilion is so smooth and I did not fall once.
I got to meet a bunch of other skaters and make connections. I may have even made some friends!
But I did not make any sales. I actually had multiple parents talk their kids out of buying from me using their allowance. Like two kids cried!! It was not fun for me and honestly was pretty disrespectful? Like I get it. You are teaching your kid about budgeting. But also. Hey? This is my income? Literally all my shop money goes to rent. I just didn't enjoy that.
But I did enjoy skating around. And having great chats. Checking in with everyone once Ann left. I was in charge for a few hours. And while I was a bit to hot from how muggy it was, I was having a great day.
I also got to see my friend Rosie, the little girl who bought a bear last year and named it farmer bear. Her mom had been very pregnant and this time she wasn't!! The baby has come!! I stayed over to her to say congrats and she let me see him and he was so small and cute. They are such a nice family.
I did some sewing. Finished the keychains I started the other day. And someone brought by a bear I had made them that has a little hole in it. I am so glad I was able to sort that out for them before they gifted him away. I told the bear he better not come back again and to enjoy his new home, but thank you for visiting.
I was really glad to be done though. I stayed a bit to make ensure the skaters were okay, as they were going to use the pavilion after. Alexis was there organizing that and so I left the space in her very capable hands.
I went inside to say goodbye to James. Matt had come by for a bit by went to go explore downtown and they would meet back up with James to go to a baseball game later. A full one that did not get rained out. So that was pretty cool.
I was just looking forward to going home. And for real I've had such a good night. I got back here and had my leftover chipotle for lunch. I cleaned out the fridge and cleaned a bit. I held Sweetp and just felt good.
Eventually I would lay down. I slept until 5. And woke up pretty disoriented. But I would shake it off pretty fast. I had a snack. Chilled with Sweetp who would not stop petting my face. And soon had a package to open!
A dress I got came and then the claw machine I ordered came too. I am a little upset because it doesn't seem to work as consistently as I would need it too. So I may be going back to the drawing board. But it's alright. I'm only a little bummed.
James ordered me pizza from the baseball stadium. Because they love me. I enjoyed that on the couch and would just watch videos and enjoy the sun set. Really I just had a really relaxing and restful afternoon.
I have been in bed resting for a while now. James and Matt just got back. And we hung out for a bit while I took a break from writing this post. They are watching a movie now. And I am going to wash my face and get ready to sleep.
I have the whole day tomorrow to do whatever I want. And I am looking forward to it. I hope you all have a wonderful night. Sleep well and take care of yourself! Please wash your hands!!

An oldie yet goodie, some still needs to happen, some a bit more challenging, and others soon to be or happening.       11/19/18 edit: “we belong” pat benatar    Marshall McCluhan published posthumously the tetrad of media effects.  I offer this letter as a retrieval of the past in order to reverse our course of history.    The Tetrad takes any medium or media, then applies these questions as ground qualities:  retrieval then reversal  &  enhancement then obsolescence.     See tetrad of media effects
The contract signing with Universal and a need to clarify retrograde messages previously implored me to write the 13th letter.    The precedent that has been set by Taylor Swift, the artist,  eventually owning her own content is so huge, it is going to take so many years for everyone to see that this was the beginning of a new way of treating creators and their creations.   Ms. Taylor Swift is a trailblazer on so many fronts that few wild frontiers will be eventually left to tame when her life’s work is done.    Way to step up “walking the talk” and make a real deal shift of the tectonic orders of magnitude right in the “here now”.   No future maybe or mights—a torch of liberty held aloft for those that can see its warm glow, thousands of lumens strong for the Artist and their children’s children.   The change you  made is a huge systematic shift, it will only be a few months before someone else asks for their masters.    It will take many years but this contract, this payment clause, this……..yeah, great work for the whole of humanity.    Literally, a move going back centuries upon centuries of artists, performers, and creatives who have prostrated themselves to the whims of the Kings of currency, from whom performance was demanded in exchange for livelihood.   It really is that Big--to comment on systematic change in the 1st political post last month and then drop a huge actual real, live example of political economy and structural change to the very system being called out.  Hecks Yeah!!   I see someone following through with such conviction, heart, and broadest of world changing visions.   Every time I think that you can’t top the last time in big, big movements that must happen for world planetary change—nope…...even bigger, even more prescient, even more important…Count Me In!!
Congratulations on the very caring yet wily move to get the hundreds of millions in ironclad guarantees to artists for the future on the Spotify clause.      These guarantees are a such a positive shift in the Spotify sale structure and leeway that the label can take with the artists.   I have done a crash course on how recoupable income, royalties, and the like— had little knowledge but now tiny bit more.   It really surprised me how many 90% do not get back to a positive balance with the Company.    It is very interesting because it is the same percentage of traders who make it in the markets over the longer term of  5-10 years.    As a business owner, I know the importance of working cash flow—a no strings attached dividend from  “contributions” like this can help to transform an artist’s current situation or feel more connected with the new digital reality.   Think of the good feelings that have resonated outward from the multitude of artist who have a bankable guarantee in the future.    All of that new creativity unleashed by release valve on the economic pressure cooker.       The actions done in isolation from the “masters” guarantee  would represent a major shift especially since it benefits everyone along the pipeline.     Both of these events at the same time baffle the awesome meter so high that there just really isn’t a reading for this humongous mountain of good.    By law of large numbers these tectonic shifts have a name, as singular events, they would have represented a super life affirming “magical” outcome yet done at the same time, the odds become staggeringly impossible to which the angels call it a “miracle”.      The series of miraculous happenings that drop that kernel of sand to land in the oyster to eventually create the finest of natural pearls.    The missing ingredient is Time—in the Mayan time keeping, the year 2012 was the beginning of the movement back to the natural time frequency of 13:20.  A thirteen moon vision of the mulitverse including our localize construction of time and space+.   The Higgs-Boson “god(dess) particle” was found at Cern in the year 2012 and confirmed the existence of at least 11 dimensions.   The Caticorn Chronicle picks up some threads that happened during this occurrence and the previous attempts to start the accelerator.    It shows the movement of their world to ours via the machines and other natural phenomena.   The natural time frequency moves the old paradigm:  Time X Energy =  Money to a  new construction:  Time X Energy = Art.    The freedom of artistic expression and ownership of the work by the artist themselves, while they are alive, is a rarity you have now helped to become the normative nature of how we will work together to see a commonality that can still be profitable for all parties involved.  Art as a living structure for a life’s expression operating in a mutually beneficial manner.    The energy needed to ensure the shift is lasting for the future has been initiated by your sequence of actions.     Once again, innumerable thanks to you for all of this and the millions you touched this Stadium Tour.
The insight and clarity on the nature of reality, my purpose on this planet, and the things that make my dreams come alive are found when I see you in my minds eye and heart.    It is this beneficent soft personage nudging me to go for it, try just a little harder to see that vision come to life.     I always dreamed of making music and writing down all of the stories, ideas, and what I now know to be lyrics that pop in my head.   I would consider it the highest honor and pleasure to spend any amount of minutes in this life with Taylor Swift.   I love being a detective of jewelry, minerals, and even new to be piqued interests---an open, curious mind figuring out all of the stuff everyone else thought was impossible to deal with .    Finding out the provenance, imagining who wore and what they wore, and asking oneself how many intricate, amazing stories these pieces would tell.    Gold may be what I find and the currency that I use most yet that is only one little aspect of the true story I wish to tell.   I found in you the true gold, a soul who shared her whole self and has the awareness to see the importance of her role in greater society.     This is like the most attractive and sexy thing a grown ass man like myself could every imagine in such a caring and beautiful vision of life .   I see the thousands of artists who will directly be involved in just one decision alone with Spotify.     Vote.org logged tens of thousands of voters registrations increases.  I see how major conservative publications were very rattled about the political moves.    Rightly so because what I found is that the Swifties are one big, caring, sharing family and you can’t mess with that kind of bond.       The biggest acts in the history of music have fought to get their masters in their own control—you did it.    I mean, this is like world changing stuff—this is so exciting and interesting to me.   I feel like I could talk for hours upon hours and never even know a minute went by—sitting in rapt enjoyment of this genius woman and her vast understanding of the world.    I have always seen visions on this kind of scale the way you flow in and out it is just marvelous to watch.       I rose one day to find an intellect, a soul so deep that for the first time my curiosity and longing in life had found an inspiration, a spark to jumpstart James to action.    Some may call this love yet these words describe what is so vast, so specially entangled down to the finest of neurons looking to create new bundles of caring reflections and spacial connections.  It is like the most ironic thing that your whole album and tour is about this and here I am months of letter writing in having a mini breakdown.    It is really hard to explain, having a parent with mental illness makes you react to certain stimuli on mental health oddly sometimes.   This is why I seemingly have run away to hide in the Cascades.     To be honest, I have not ever put myself out on a limb like this before and at the same time I feel more alive about life than ever.    The writings are the first time I have written other than a letter to a friend and have only written two business plans plus  an avid technical analyst for commodity charting, plus really good picking stocks to “break”.   Thank you for this opportunity to find my voice and let those pieces of inspired words set themselves free.    For too long I’ve held them inside without a way to tend them in the proper way.     I usually  prefer working to hold real items in my local economy to bolster it as much as possible.  The scale of how you weave just literally makes me just shake my head in amazement and nod one of those “damn yeah” nods.  To see you just kicking some butt every other week—just straight up humbling to me.    It would make my world  if I were able to help out in any way to offer insight.     I just want to support you in any way possible.    I will move anywhere or change my life to be part of yours—just to be perfectly clear.    I am a humble guy and will keep on kicking out some heaps of good.    Thanks for everything!!!!!!!
“And then you say     I want you for worse or for better       I would wait for ever and ever     Broke your heart, I'll put it back together          I would wait for ever and ever”          “how you get the girl”………….
You are an inspiration and a one of the most beautiful souls on this planet.   I will relish the day that our paths may cross again.   Until that time I offer these insights upon meditating on the beneficent vision of you with the floral top in the huji filter pre Arlington shows.    This soft vision comes as a friendly reminder to give it our best and push on through.    Love doesn’t take numbers.
    eternal love,
james

Host An EPIC Clothing Swap
I 1st discovered about clothing swaps when I was a kid, from a book filled with "super entertaining slumber party ideas". The guidelines had been basic - clean out your closet, invite some friends more than, look by means of 1 another's clothing piles and trade your products for their items. It sounded so exciting (and it really is) but I imagined getting even much better on a slightly bigger scale. The issue is, not everybody has exactly the same quantity of stuff, not everyone wants to create a direct trade with you. Whoever lays eyes on an item would get it initial - and for young ladies this could spell problems. When I essentially held my initial Clothes Trade I organized it a little differently. I'm now approaching my 27th birthday and I am proud to say that I have hosted a clothing trade at the very least after a year, each year since I was 10 years old. Now I'm right here to share with you one of the most powerful (and exciting!) clothing trade suggestions. "Stores" When you initial arrive at my Clothes Trade you will be assigned a retailer space. This will likely be one of the rooms in my home. (If your trade is in a smaller sized space, like an apartment, you may allocate corners/pieces of furnishings to each and every individual. Ex. Your shop is on the couch, my shop is on the dinner table, etc) You may merchandise your shop nevertheless you'd like. Lay your things out in an appealing way to ensure that all the party guests can see your goods devoid of digging by means of bags or missing a gem. It is possible to name your shop and also make a sign to post in the door. This is a great addition to a celebration where guests do not know a single yet another nicely. Sitting down to decorate a sign can be a fantastic ice-breaker (and a excellent time to consume some snacks or - for the 21+ crowd- delight in a cocktail) "Sessions" Occasionally guests arrive with 15 items and at times they arrive with 350. It may be nearly not possible to lay out 350 products at after, so because of this I've divided the evening into 3 separate "sessions" of purchasing. Every single guest divides their goods into three groups and only lays out a single group of merchandise at a time. This tends to make it probable to take in all of the sweet things absolutely everyone has purchased and eliminates digging through piles. "Money and Sticky Notes" Upon entry for the trade, I'll hand you an envelope filled with Clothes Trade Currency. It is actually brightly colored dollars that I printed out on my computer numerous years ago and continue to utilize each year for the Trade. You are going to also obtain a stack of thin (bookmarking) sticky notes. After the initial session starts, absolutely everyone goes from store to retailer and puts sticky notes around the items that they want to invest in. In the course of this portion of the trade no actual purchases are created. This gives everyone a opportunity to find out every person else's goods in lieu of rushing wildly around attempting to get items before any one else gets there. It tends to make for any relaxed atmosphere and does not result in really hard feelings of 1 friend's shop always becoming the final to become visited. As soon as everybody has taken a look in everybody else's shop, it's time for you to make purchases. Each shop owner will set aside any item with a number of stickies on it for The Auction in the end from the celebration. All products only wanted by a single guest can be bought. Price of products is determined by the person shop owner. Persons with tons of things ordinarily charge decrease costs, which include '$1" or "$2" per item where as people that only brought a few items may possibly charge up to "$5" or "$6" per item. This can be an excellent way for girls and teens to learn about financial structure - all under the guise of shopping. The amount of funds given to every single guest is completely up to the host. The a lot more guests you may have, the extra money they require at the beginning so that you can shop the entire time even though they never make a sale themselves. With 5 persons at a Clothes Trade, I would give each person "$150".
Tumblr media
"The Auction" Perhaps the most thrilling phase of newborn boy clothes is the auction. Right after you may have completed 3 sessions (or nonetheless many you determine to have) of browsing and shopping, it is time for you to bring out the major ticket products. All the items with numerous possible purchasers (that had various sticky notes on them during the browsing phases) are played out in a typical region (at my event all of us collect about the table to ensure that every person has a seat). Be sure you permit guests time for you to try on items ahead of the auction really begins, to ensure they would fit correctly. Right after absolutely everyone has determined which products they may be most interested in, the auction begins! Each person takes a turn auctioning off among their common things. Guests bid, in true auction fashion until a winning bid takes the item and the dollars is exchanged. This continues until every single item has been auctioned off. Then everybody gathers up their new goods and happily goes home! Ideas - It really is usually surprising which products are common things. Sometimes mates will acquire anything for sentimental reasons, or for the reason that they assume it really is funny. You by no means know who could possibly have a use for that useless item you own. Do not restrict yourself by attempting to only bring "good" items. 1 woman's trash is an additional woman's treasure! - Not surprisingly, books, films, housewares, recreation products and also other size-less items tend to be well-known. My good friends vary in size from a size 4 to a size 16, but everyone features a excellent time. - It is an excellent method to get needed products with no feeling like a moocher. You constantly loved that blouse? Now it really is yours. You happen to be possessing a child soon? Take all your close friends old baby clothing. No true income needs to be exchanged and also you do not really feel like you happen to be stealing from a pal. - Younger girls may have fun such as other components for the trade too - we utilised to play that it was a town and we would produce laws to comply with for the evening. - Ladies may well also would like to bring husbands along as well. We have some fellows who attend and get pleasure from the knowledge also. Be sure you lay out some meals for them and they may chat with each other, obtain a couple of products and bid seriously high on books and DVDs during the auction portion! - By structuring the event as I played out above, it makes it possible for guests to arrive late and leave as needed without displaying as much as a picked-over mess. - Men and women turn out to be rapidly friends since it really is such a structured event. It removed the awkwardness of a very first meeting because you will be both actively engaged within the activity. - Less clothing ends up in landfills - and you end up with new items with no spending a genuine dollar. - You are able to structure your event however you'd prefer to match your tastes! If you are brief on time, or only have a couple guests, take into account skipping straight towards the Auction. It is lots much more enjoyable than sifting via bags! - An added bonus is hearing people's stories behind the things they're providing away, it may be entertaining to know where the item came from and why they have decided to component with it. It's an incredible bonding knowledge amongst mates as well.

Passing the Latte: From a Backyard Blueberry Business to Running Our Saxbys La Salle University Cafe
Tumblr media
Emma Schweigert has always been entrepreneurial. As a kid growing up in Schuylkill Haven, Pa., she had the bright idea to pick blueberries from her backyard and sell them to passersby. Soon she put a sign up, got neighbors to help, and developed a truly impressive business — for a kid or an adult.
Now a 22-year-old senior at La Salle, Emma has just finished putting her entrepreneurial spirit to work as the Student Cafe Executive Officer (SCEO) at Saxbys La Salle. For six months, she ran all aspects of the cafe, from team development to community leadership to financial management. It’s all part of the Saxbys Experiential Learning Program (ELP) where college students like Emma earn college credit and competitive pay while getting real-life experience.
We spoke to Emma soon after finished leading our Saxbys La Salle University cafe to learn her thoughts on the ELP program.
Overview
Describe your experience as SCEO and how it’ll help prepare you for your future career.
I think it touches a lot of different categories. I feel confident that if an interviewer asked me any type of question, I have some knowledge, experience or story I can tell. Working with Saxbys gave me experience not in just one area of study but several. Marketing finance, management, sales, accounting — it touches everything.
What surprised you about this program?
Originally, I thought managing the financials would be super challenging but you can get the hang of that pretty quickly. More of the challenge is managing your team and helping to develop them. Trying to get to know everyone, making the schedule, keeping everyone happy — managing people is really tough and I didn’t realize that until I started this opportunity.
What are your career aspirations?
I’d like to either find a marketing job — maybe in advertising. Or be a financial advisor. I’m applying to a bunch of different places and keeping my options open.
Team Development
How did you build a culture based off your leadership style at your cafe within six months?
In the beginning, I gave them a lot of freedom. I would get to know how they ran the cafe before I was around and let them feel comfortable. Once I established trust with them, it helped me feel empowered to change things up. As long as you explain why you’re doing things, people are receptive and respectful. It’s all about building trust.
What was the most rewarding aspect of developing your team?
Watching them grow into leaders themselves. Once I developed leaders amongst the team, I didn’t need to direct or coach people all the time. I had other people I trusted to do that for me when I wasn’t around. It made the cafe run a lot better.
What was a major obstacle you had to overcome when it came to developing a team member?
Some team members pushed back a little bit or were resistant to change, so I had to keep reminding them to keep moving forward so the entire team is on the same page. We have monthly meetings called O3s (aka one-on-ones). That was a great time to address any issues or concerns. Keeping the line of communication open is very important.
Community Leadership
Name some community events that made you particularly proud.
We had a Pay as You Wish event. Guests could order anything from the menu and pay as much or little as they wanted. Saxbys matched that number and the money was donated to the La Salle Crisis Fund helping students who are food insecure or housing insecure. We raised $5,800 which goes a long way for an organization like that.
Any others?
Throughout the semester we donated all our wasted bagels, pastries and coffee to Face to Face Germantown which provides meals for people in need. There was also a place in Kensington where we donated lots of food items throughout semester. We also partnered with Philanthropos allowing guests to round up the change in their orders. All that money got donated to an organization called Team Up Philly, an afterschool program for girls, teaching them to play sports and helping them with homework.
How did you balance the best interest of your team while also contributing to the community you served?
A lot of team members were super pumped and excited to work on this stuff so it was easy. They gave me a bunch of suggestions on different ways the cafe could get involved.
How did becoming a community leader impact your cafe?
It helps morale. It made team members enjoy coming to work because they knew we’re not only serving coffee to our guests but trying to make a difference.
Financial Management
How did you achieve mastery of your P&L?
It took me a while to get the hang of it. My coaches were there to help me and walk me through it step-by-step, line-by-line. I give all credit to my coaches.
How did you keep your cafe accountable to the day-to-day responsibilities in order to manage your costs?
I would post our weekly financial reports in the back of the house so team members could see how we were doing. They were more receptive to the changes I wanted to make because they could see the reasoning behind them.
Final Thoughts
Are there any other ways the program helped you grow?
I think this internship really helped me get to know the La Salle community more. I know a lot more faculty on campus. It opened up my network more, which is really great now that I’m trying to find a job.
What advice do you have for the incoming SCEO?
Get to know your team as much as possible early so you can build trust a little bit sooner. The first month I was a little overwhelmed. I wish I just slowed down and got to know my team a little better in those times. Also, time management is huge. Make lists and set goals for yourself everyday.
How do you feel now that it’s over?
I’m still working part time with Saxbys. I’m helping to train the new SCEO and working on some marketing initiatives. So it’s not like I’m totally done. But it stinks leaving. I spent so much time with my team members over the past six months, it’s weird not seeing them everyday but it’s nice to step back and let someone else take over.

i don’t sleep and i can’t follow directions
I don’t take credit for these questions.
How many concerts have you been to? I’ve lost count. Dozens.
Have you been to any festivals? Warped Tour, three times.
Which artist/band have you seen the most live?  The Summer Set, four times. First concert you went to?  Clay Walker and Lorrie Morgan, 1994. Last concert you went to? Goo Goo Dolls at Darien Lake last year. We always try to go to the Buffalo shows since they’re from there and it’s the closest venue to our hometown. What is your next concert? As of right now, All Time Low in Pittsburgh July 25. It’s the day before my birthday so Dave got us VIP tickets. And I bought one for my sister.
Which artists/bands would you love to see live?  There are too many to name. A lot I’ve seen before. But my biggest one is Paramore. The farthest you’ve traveled to go to a concert?  Six hours. Four to get back home to pick up Dave’s brother and then another two from there to Darien Lake.
Best opening act you’ve seen? The first time I saw Set it Off they were opening for Every Avenue, and I fell in love with them immediately. And I love love loved Austin Gibbs when he opened for The Maine.   Worst opening act you’ve seen? They weren’t bad, per say, but I wasn’t really into Chester French when we saw GGD and the Spill Canvas.
Have you met any bands/artists at a concert?  Louden Swain. What’s one thing you have to bring to a concert?  Camera. What’s the most you’ve paid for a ticket?  I think the last time I saw Alabama with my sister and her husband they were over a hundred apiece but my ticket was a birthday gift. Most I’ve ever paid was probably around $60. Best concert you’ve been to? Alabama both times, Goo Goo Dolls & Spill Canvas in 2010, and Every Avenue in 2012.   Worst concert you’ve been to?  I’ve never been to a bad one. Have you been in a social media post an artist posted after a show?  Probbbbably not. Funniest concert memory? This doesn’t have anything to do with the concert itself, but at Every Avenue my friend Tyler told me my hair looked voluptuous when he meant voluminous and we still laugh about it five years later.   Do you buy your tickets as soon as they go on sale, after, or the day of? Whenever I can.   Have you ever been noticed by an artist at a concert?  YES Alex and Jeremy from Mayday Parade both pointed at me when I was like two feet away from them.
Have you met any internet friends at a concert?  No but at Pittcon last year I made friends with the couple sitting next to me during Louden Swain and we still talk on twitter sometimes. Which concert that you’ve been to has had the best stage setup/production? Keith Urban for sure. Have you ever caught a guitar pick, drumstick, got a setlist, etc.? I got a guitar pick during Boys Like Girls a long time ago but I don’t know where it is. Favorite concert venue?  Darien Lake. Least favorite concert venue? Actually I’m not a fan of the First Niagara Center in Buffalo. Too big.
Which do you prefer: indoor or outdoor concerts?  Outdoor unless it’s like a bar. Which do you prefer: clubs, theaters, arenas, or stadiums?  Clubs I guess. Does Darien Lake count as a stadium?  Have you ever missed school or work to go to a concert? I’ve taken off work but I had paid vacation time.   Have you ever been surprised with tickets from someone?  Yep. My family got me Keith Urban tickets for my 16th birthday. And for both Pittcon and the upcoming ATL show Dave surprised me. He just sent me screenshots of the order confirmations lol
Who do you enjoy going to concerts with?  Anyone. I live for concerts. General admission or seated concerts? Both. Have you been to multiple dates for one tour?  No but I would if I had the disposable income. Have you been to concerts 2 or more days in a row? Nope. Have you ever received free tickets from a contest or an artist’s crew? Nah, they were either birthday gifts or I bought them myself. Luckily my birthday falls right in the middle of prime concert season. Have you been front row and/or back row for a concert?  I’ve been right up to the stage at GA shows, never been way in the back. Have you ever gotten sick, bruised, or broken a bone after a concert? No I just always lose my voice from singing/screaming. Have you ever had surprise guests at a concert you attended?  Not really, but it was awesome when Jason Lancaster came out to sing Miserable at Best with Mayday Parade even though he was touring with Go Radio at the time.  Did you start listening to an opening act after you saw them in concert?  SET IT OFF!!! What’s the latest you’ve got home from a concert?  Jeez, like 3 or 4am I think. When is the earliest you’ve arrived to a venue for a concert? A couple hours before. Have you seen your favorite artist in concert?  Yes, several of them. Keith Urban three times, Goo Goo Dolls three times, and Alabama twice. This year will be my second time seeing All Time Low. Longest you’ve waited in line for a concert?  Like an hour maybe. Lines usually move along pretty quickly were I come from. Have you ever attended a concert alone? No, half the fun of going is being with friends. I have, however, broken off from my group at Warped if we wanted to see different bands that were playing at the same time.
What’s the best part of a concert in your opinion?  Uh, everything? The music, the energy, the memories, the beer. It’s the only, literally ONLY, time I ever feel comfortable being around a huge crowd because we’re all there for the same thing and just totally feeling it all. It’s amazing.
Have you ever heard/seen an artist soundcheck before their show?  At Warped you kinda have to because everything moves so fast. What’s the biggest venue you’ve been to a concert at?  I mean the setup for Warped is pretty big but idk if it’s as big as First Niagara. What’s the smallest venue you’ve been to a concert at?  Bars for local bands. And yes, I believe they count. Have you ever had side stage seats?  No but I’ve been at a couple standing room shows where I got pretty damn close. Which venue have you been to the most concerts at?  Darien Lake. Do you post a lot about a concert you’ve attended on social media or very little?  Maybe a few posts each, unless it’s like a huge deal for me to have been there, then I’ll go nuts. Has a concert or tour you were planning on going to got cancelled?  Nope.
Have you seen a band in concert before a member left the band / they broke up?  Many. The best was Every Avenue on their last tour. Favorite song you’ve heard live?  It’s always Name. It’s not even my favorite GGD song but to hear it live is so much different. I get like legit emotional. Have you ever seen an artist/band play an album in full? No. I would have killed to see the Black Parade tour. Which artist would you refuse to see in concert?  Beyonce because she’s overrated as hell and probably super expensive. What’s the craziest thing a fan has done at a concert you’ve been to?  When I saw Breathe Carolina there was a dude in a gorilla costume and two other guys dressed like bananas and they crowdsurfed the whole time. It was hilarious. Which venue(s) would you love to go to for a concert?  CBGB, obviously, even though it’s gone and I have no other reason or desire to ever go to New York.  Have you ever been to a concert at a venue that no longer exists?  Mohawk Place in Buffalo closed not long after I was there for Set it Off/Every Avenue but they’re open again now. Have you ever lost something/got something stolen at a concert? I had an earring ripped out by a crowdsurfer once. Have people made fun of you or laughed because of how you were acting at a concert?  I doubt it. Everybody does crazy shit at shows. Have you ever been kicked out of a concert?  No. Has an artist thrown or spit water on you?  God yes, it’s awesome. Have you ever seen a security guard dance to a song at a concert?  Usually the most they’ll do is like stand there with their arms crossed and bob their head. Have you seen any acts you don’t like at a concert?  Not necessarily don’t like, just maybe openers that I’d never heard of but wasn’t feeling too much. Have you ever passed out or thrown up at a concert?  Definitely haven’t passed out. I almost threw up at Warped one year because it was so ridiculously hot though. Have you seen any artists in concerts that you don’t like anymore? I don’t think so. Once I like somebody I pretty much like them for life.

Earlier this year before Lockdown, one of our best photographers went out to Zimbabwe to document the work of four charities. We catch up with Kristian Leven to find out more about his experience and also to see some of the work he shot for the charities.
Can you tell us a little about how you heard about PhotoAid Global in the first place? And why did you want to join?
I was looking through Photo Professional magazine back in 2017, when an article about Photo Aid Global caught my attention. I loved the idea of joining an organisation that was aiming to connect charities and NGO’s whom are in real need of professional imagery to help promote the great work they’re doing, with photographers who would be willing to voluntarily provide their skills to photograph them.
What excited you about this project in Zim in particular?
I can’t deny that it was the opportunity to go to Zimbabwe that really attracted me first. I’m always up for a new adventure and this definitely seemed like one. After reading a bit about the Semwayo Sewing School, it seemed like a fantastic cause to work alongside with, but it seemed like a big distance to go for one organisation. Thankfully another 3 were added to the programme to make the journey a lot more worthwhile.
You hadn’t been to Zim before had you?
Real nerves to be honest! A nervous excitement that came with stepping into the unknown. I also wanted to make sure that it was safe to go to – unfortunately the only time we usually hear about other countries in the news is when something bad has happened there, and Zimbabwe has had its fair share over the years. Ness put my fears to bed though, and not only made sure that I was picked up and taken back to the airport, but also that I would have someone with me at all times. That person came in the form of Moses, and what a top guy he was! So thankful to have him as my guide, and bed partner!
I also wanted to repay the faith my sponsors had placed in me in financially helping me to go there, which I’ll go into a bit later.
Did the trip meet your expectations? In what way? Or was it totally different?
It was definitely as intense as I thought it would be! There was a lot packed into a short amount of time, and by the end I was pretty pooped. I knew this was going to be the case though so not a big surprise at all, but with my hosts being devout Christians, we unfortunately didn’t get the post shoot beers in which I was secretly in need of at times! But honestly I have nothing but huge love and respect for everyone there – I was really made to be very welcomed wherever I went, and I’m so glad I was able to help in a small way.
Can you tell us a little about your first impressions of the place?
Without question the worst roads I’ve ever experienced. I’ve sworn to never complain about ours ever again! But in all seriousness, I was actually relieved that there wasn’t anywhere near the same amount of poverty that I had seen in Ethiopia the year before. That was something I’ll never forget, and it was somewhat comforting to know that Zimbaweans aren’t in the same unfortunate predicament.
We’d like to know a bit about each of the projects you covered. All of these trips are always intense and by default in terms of money and resources the charities try and cram in as much as they can with you!
Semwayo Sewing School
The first day was spent at the Semwayo Sewing and Design School, which was set up by the man who organised the whole Zimbabwe side of the trip, Moses Semwayo. He wanted to help women and girls in his local community gain a skill that would help supplement the family income at a time when there was a large amount of unemployment. The school, which started with just one student, has now taught over 100 women and girls to sew school uniforms, re-usable sanitary pads (which were particularly important during the Cyclone Idai aftermath), and general garments which could be sold to their local communities. The sewing school is currently based in a local church, with all the sewing taught on manual machines. The current class consists of six students aged between 18-36, some of whom walk up to two hours each day to attend.
The Mwana Trust
The second day was spent with the The Mwana Trust, an NGO that pays the school fees (there aren’t any state schools in Zimbabwe) of a certain number of orphaned and disadvantaged children, as well as providing food and support for them and their families. We headed to three separate schools in the morning, where the Trust gave out bottles of cooking oil to the children they support (cooking oil is surprisingly expensive and out of reach of the poorest families). Before leaving for the day, the children are given their lunch – one cupful of boiled maize each – and are told to bring in a container to help take it away; some of the children are so poor though they have to make do with old plastic bags. The Mwana Trust also teaches each student how to plant their own crops, an invaluable skill for them and their families, and thanks to generous donations, the Trust was able to plant their own community garden, the produce of which is shared amongst their beneficiaries.
Hope for Kids
Day 3 of the trip was spent with Hope for Kids, whom are also committed to offering education, food, and psycho-social support to the orphaned and disadvantaged children that they look after. I was with them on a Saturday, which meant we couldn’t capture the work they did in schools, but we spent the day moving between houses, handing out food parcels – which include 2 litres of cooking oil, soya chunks, fried fish, sugar, salt and 10kg of maize – to those most in need.
In the pictures you’ll see Pamela, 17, who lives with her mum and 3 year old sister in a house that was built by Hope For Kids after their original home was destroyed by Cyclone Idai; Brian, 17, who lives with his brother Lovemore, 21, in a small two roomed hut that one of their teacher’s gave to them in return for them completing their schooling; Ms Moyana, who looks after her grand-daughter Faith,11, since Faith’s mother died of a short illness; and Privilege, 14, who was left by her mother at her aunt’s house a few years ago and has not been seen since. The aunt looks after four of her own children as well as three other orphaned children; all the children share one bedroom
Joshua Dhube Primary
My final morning was spent at Joshua Dhube Primary School, which was opened in 2015 and largely funded by Mission Direct. It teaches 916 children from Kindergarten right up to Grade 7, however there are only 14 teachers presently, with the school on a government waiting list for more. In the meantime the Headmistress covers two grade years herself, with the help student support staff. The school is still looking to raise money to complete two classroom blocks, as well as the landscaping to provide a safer environment to play.
You kindly also raised funds for extra financial help through sales of your prints, what compelled you to do that? The charities were over the moon. Can you also maybe explain how you raised funds to go on the trip?
I just didn’t want to go there empty handed. Yes, I was giving my time and skill for free, but I knew that if I could raise £100 at least for each charity, it would go a long way over there. I just didn’t realise quite how far it would go until they told me. It just puts so many things into perspective.
Also the cost of the flight was raised through sponsorship via Just Giving. I created a page and publicised it on Facebook, and I managed to raise £250 through friends, and my mum topped up the remaining £250!
Would you go again somewhere, either same place or elsewhere?
I’ll probably leave Zimbabwe for any other PhotoAid volunteers for the foreseeable future, but I think it would be interesting and quite exciting to go back again in a few years, and be re-acquainted with everyone. Other than that I’m open to anything, and as long as I’m able to help in some way, that would be amazing. It’s actually spurred me onto seeing if I can volunteer my photography skills here in the UK, and I hope to make something happen soon.
Finally would you recommend other photographers wanting to put something back to consider doing something like this?
Without question. I unfortunately heard the term ‘white saviour’ crop up in conversation a couple of times before I went there, which made me kinda question whether what I was doing was ‘the right thing’. When I was there, I asked Misheck, who runs Hope For Kids, whether he felt uncomfortable having a white person travel there to help them. He couldn’t have looked more bemused. He went on to passionately tell me that having volunteers come and help was a lifeline for them, not to mention the sponsorship money that would help put a number of children through school for the year.
As odd as it may seem here, it’s also perceived as a great honour to have a visitor fly all the way from the UK and be interested and take notice of an organisation in Sub Saharan Africa. The kids are also super excited, the majority of whom have never seen a white person before, and it’s a great experience for them as well! So I left without any doubt that the work done by the volunteers at PhotoAid was a massive help not only to the organisations and community, but most importantly, the children.

Three Values Every Entrepreneur Should Learn While They’re Young
I’m 42 years old. I’ve been an entrepreneur exactly half of that time, opening several successful businesses en route, and lately, I’ve done a lot of reflecting on how I’ve managed to survive this long.
You tend to get more philosophical as you age, but that’s not the only reason for my musing; I’m also the father of six smart, energetic girls, the oldest of whom is in high school and brimming with career ambitions of her own.
I have very specific ideas about the kind of world I want her to compete in. Ideally, it’ll be formed by three basic values that guided me through innumerable difficulties and helped me establish mutually rewarding relationships with colleagues and competitors alike. My hope is that adopting these values will do the same for you in your business.
Hard work is the foundation on which everything stands or falls.
I grew up on a farm in a small town in Idaho. It didn’t bring in quite enough income to cover all our bills, so my dad took a swing shift at a dairy in town. This meant that many of the farm’s responsibilities fell on me.
Irrigating in the summer and feeding cows in the winter were just things I had to get done. I didn’t get to question whether I felt like busting my butt. If equipment broke down or if things didn’t go my way, I had to figure it out. Everything boiled down to one central fact, which could well serve as a motto for entrepreneurship in general: The cows couldn’t go to bed hungry.
This attitude was drilled into me from a young age, and I carried it into my first business. I had no customers and no revenue. To survive, I needed both of those; therefore, I couldn’t quit until I had them. If that meant pushing on deep into the night for months on end, so be it.
Adopt this attitude as your own. Decide that nothing will stop you. You’ll run through any wall to reach your objective, no matter how thick. You won’t seek the solace of your bed until the cows are contented and tucked into theirs.
The quest for improvement should never end.
Kaizen, the Japanese term for continuous improvement, is the manufacturing philosophy of Toyota as described in a remarkable book called The Toyota Way by Jeffrey K. Liker. It took the company to the top, and I believe it can do the same for you.
If continuous improvement isn’t a mindset you currently enjoy, the fact that many of your future competitors undoubtedly will should motivate you to rectify the situation as soon as possible. Otherwise, little by little, they’ll pass you by.
It won’t even be visible to you, because continuous improvement is incremental and slow. It happens in airport terminals, when you decide to study how to improve your sales technique instead of napping or vegging out in front of your phone. It happens in the wee hours of the morning, when you put on your running shoes and head out the door instead of hitting the snooze button. It happens when you write an extra email or make an extra phone call to an unsatisfied customer.
It’ll set the pace for your whole business and inspire your colleagues to strive for a similar standard of excellence. If you’re not trying to get better or you’re not trying to get smarter, how can you demand excellence from others?
Unshakeable optimism is a force to be reckoned with.
It might sound corny, but anyone who expects to lead a company to great things should assign themselves the role of Chief Optimism Officer. Your employees are never going to be more optimistic than you are. If you act like a pessimist, no one else is going to fix that for you.
You simply have to be the most hopeful, fearless person at your company. It’ll come through in the way you talk to people, expressing your confidence about the problems that are being worked on and the direction in which you’re headed.
Every interaction you have — whether it’s an email, a phone call, a conversation in person or over video — will be watched and judged. Remember, you set the tone. Your team will reflect that tone, and it will carry to your partners and clients.
This means that you have to be constantly on your game. You must forbid yourself from saying, “Today I’m going to be grumpy, and people are just going to have to deal with it.” That’s not a luxury you possess.
You’ll have bad days, of course — you’ll feel tired and depressed like every other human does from time to time. Soldier on regardless. Fake it if you have to. Being in a position to uplift others is an enormous privilege, and wise use of it will fill you with love and beget love in return.

Through observation, I probably guess that their popularity is very big?
After browsing all kinds of variety short video TV programs and live-action talk shows, I habitually open the mobile news app to see what new content & interesting sharing. Suddenly I saw that the Internet Redskins/Grassroots stars are particularly prosperous in recent years. Various anchors, Weibo stars, and advertising darlings have a lot of annual income. A live broadcast directly drives consumers to spend tens of thousands. This kind of sales is a lot. It is impossible for a person to reach a lifetime. However, these network anchors seem to be very ordinary, not particularly beautiful, especially handsome, how suddenly suddenly became famous, attracting many netizens to place orders to buy goods? What are the special reasons behind it?
In order to find out the root cause, when I was free, I deliberately downloaded a variety of live, short videos and Weibo apps to observe, learn and think why they can stand out? What special advantages do they have? Sure enough, after a period of hard work, I will now report to you on my "research" results. In fact, we will be inspired by the ideas of social marketing and content marketing.
1, people set ID & story
Every brand needs a good story, and every "network leader" must have a good person ID. It is best to be positive about the characteristics of the sun. Or students or dance teachers or models, etc., because these groups have more leisure time, perhaps these groups are more likely to get a good impression, basically each of them has a corresponding personality, specialty, occupation, social identity. They all have their own unique stories and personality tags. Maybe they don't understand communication and marketing, but they know how to play emotional cards, and they know the minds behind the camera and the audience on the other side of the computer. The time points and stories that they made during the show were all set around the ID.
Therefore, when we do LinkedIn, we must first set up our own ID and strange stories, positive positive avatars, good-looking formal professional photos, short professional introductions, and more professional knowledge. News such as articles and market dynamics have “made” ourselves into product experts in a certain segment. In this way, it is easy to attract “audiences”. Once we have identified the “personal” ID that we have created, it is particularly easy to generate trust, so communication and interaction become easy.
There are some inspiring examples of the benefits of setting up an ID. For example, by carefully planning and planning your own career planning, you have time to study the best sellers or brand cases in the same industry, and do social marketing according to the script, you will receive many surprises.
2, proficient in a special
Singing, dancing, chatting, commenting, or exercising, etc., must show off your unique skills. In short, it is to find ways to attract the attention of the target people. It is best to stay in your circle. Sometimes, I feel that being beautiful is also a prominent specialty. This is also estimated by many people. However, I later found that people who are beautiful are not necessarily online. In fact, as long as you have characteristics, personality, and flexibility to show yourself, you can get the attention and support of others. Therefore, when we are doing social marketing, we should not feel that we are not beautiful, our professional knowledge is not very powerful, and all negative psychological factors that affect positive play are removed. As long as you are brave and sincere, now is an era of strong tolerance. If you are sincere and brave, you will get a lot of supporters. So, through our profession, specialties, and articles or pictures or short videos, we can boldly gain recognition and trust from others.
3, close to the people
Maybe you are not beautiful, but dare to share your anecdotes and jokes during live broadcasts and interactions. You are very close to the people and nice, and you can treat your audience as your friends. So both male and female audiences will like to listen to your live broadcast. Many female viewers feel that you don't have a star temper, and your actions will affect them. Capturing the intimate feeling of being approachable, you can quickly accumulate fans and become a super network star.Acting like a sister next door, the next brother is as kind. Therefore, when we are doing social marketing, we must be very close to the people, and the interaction is also special nice. By the way, share personal work results and daily life stories. Sometimes you can share some small coups and funny ideas, let others think that you are very interesting, more cute, more stereo, and people have more full ID.
4, diligent and eager to learn
I always feel that people who work hard and like to learn, their luck is not bad. And I have observed excellent online stars, their hard work is far beyond our imagination. I am a relative and part-time selling cosmetics and masks. Ten dozens of videos are released every day, such as washing steps, pre-shipment testing and packaging, testing product details, and more. Each video is not released directly, but it needs to be edited and edited in detail by the later professional. Sometimes it takes a lot of video to edit a good-looking video. Every day I want to accumulate various creative materials. If they have not been exposed to new areas of marketing before, they will spend a lot of time researching and learning.
Think about it, will we get some inspiration? Every industry needs to do a good job. At first, it has to go through a very hard business. There is no unexpected happiness that comes suddenly. Unless there is a chance to meet the enthusiasm, it must be seized. In any case, if you live to learn old, don’t When we stop to meet new challenges, we all need to constantly learn and enhance our value. The same is true for social marketing. Being diligent and eager to learn will always bring you good luck.
5, with patience
They are more patient. They didn't expect fans to give gifts at first. Many online stars have accumulated their popularity slowly after a long time. I saw a female anchor who sang before. She didn't sit and sing live at home. She took a selfie stick, plugged her earplugs, and sneaked on the street. After a few months, she gradually became famous. This process is very tough, be very optimistic and encourage yourself, often singing live at night, you can imagine a girl on the road may encounter rogues or thieves and other terrorists and things. If you think about it, you will get a return soon. Then I think your social marketing effect will be very small.
6, will rely on trends and traffic
We sometimes see some media stars praising each other and seeing that many people use social hotspots to do marketing advertising. I will be good at social traffic (writing article marketing, posting on famous star microblogs, blogs, etc.), keeping up with current events and smashing traffic hot searches. Focusing on hot topics is a trend, it is also a learning . Therefore, many people in the online star, they are the masters who master this skill. People involved in traffic discussions can easily attract the attention of others, which makes it relatively easy for us to get more extra traffic. Therefore, to do social marketing, we must learn to capture hot traffic, as long as we correctly disseminate positive content and actively publish our own opinions. And the view, let others remember, help build a personal brand, it is extraordinarily easy to accumulate fans.
7, self-defeating spirit
I once thought that self-confidence is too important for network reds. Because the fans who are the fans are gathered together. At the beginning, I knew that the online audience might be just a few people, but I was still passionate about creating, just like you are facing a million people to open a concert, giving yourself invisible encouragement. Sometimes the message that someone else gives you may be embarrassing or negative. At this time, you have to stick to the right direction, choose to believe in yourself, choose to shield and pretend that you can't see the opposition. Therefore, when we do social marketing, we must face the screen and edit the content. We must be self-proclaimed. What I publish is something that is urgently needed by millions of people, and it can be praised by countless people. In this way, our passion can be more lasting, and we live relatively happier.
Conclusion:
In fact, people "remember" that you are a university. Every industry has excellent people who do well. Don't underestimate them, even if they seem to only sing, dance, make up, play games, and soak the hotel. However, online stars and marketing are a particularly difficult industry. How much bitterness and suffering can you break through? Success also has a certain probability of luck. For many people, it can be difficult to keep a constant source of meaningful value. Therefore, to do social marketing or content output, we must study and analyze outstanding peers and super network reds, what similarities they have in common, learn from them, and regard them as the best teachers. Slowly, when you master the right marketing skills, you will also know some success ideas and you will know how to get your "target group" attention.
This is the easiest time to create personal IP impact, and content output is the best shortcut.
As long as you insist on outputting valuable and meaningful content, it will slowly lead to traffic conversion.
Finally, I want to say that each of us should regard ourselves as a network star, find out our own positioning, build our own people, tap the "tools" that belong to us, be friendly to people, and be patient and diligent. I will use the potential to plan and firmly "self-defeating" and believe that I can succeed.
