Song Review: Gasoline Lollipops - “The Ghost of Tom Joad”

Gasoline Lollipops filled out their version of “The Ghost of Tom Joad” with a full-band arrangement that builds from sparse piano and acoustic guitar to plugged-in-with-rhythm-section and reverts back to from whence it began. Frontman Clay Rose, meanwhile, does his best Bruce Springsteen at the mic.

The opposite tack - mirroring Springsteen’s music and singing like Rose - would’ve probably worked out better. For this “Joad” is a weird combo of reinterpretation and wannabe soundalike that falls somewhere between bar band and tribute act.

The third option would’ve been to pick one of the two lanes outlined above - straight mimic or total reconstruction. In either of those cases, the song would have the benefit of not sounding so awkward - as if the Gas Pops couldn’t decide what to do with “The Ghost of Tom Joad.”

Agust D (BTS): The Ghost of Tom Joad (2008)

I imagine Suga could do a lot with pretty much any Springsteen song, given Bruce’s consistently anti-capitalist themes. But “The Ghost of Tom Joad", specifically the live version with Tom Morello, has a bite and a pessimism, a refusal to provide listeners with hope that doesn’t taste of blood, that I think fits right in with my favorite Agust D work (see: “The Last” & “Interlude: Shadow”). This version of the song has plenty of space for rap verses, and I love the idea of Suga’s deep voice set against the high wailing of Morello’s guitar. It's an 8-minute arrangement, majestic and beautiful and terrifying all the way through--I think it's an even match for Suga's presence as an artist, and something like that is very hard to find.
