Several weeks ago one of my coworkers called me over into her cubicle and gave me a very unexpected gift. Her mother passed away recently, and she'd been packing stuff up at her condo to give to relatives and sell, so the home could be sold. The mother was an avid knitter and crocheter, and when my coworker came upon her stash of equipment, she told me, she "immediately thought of me as someone who might get some use out of it."

So, I have inherited a varied collection of knitting needles and crochet hooks, cable needles, sewing needles, and, best of all, now-out-of-print pattern books, mostly for blankets, because that was what this lady loved to make most. Plus, I also have a bunch of gauge swatches she made, pinned to little bits of card covered in perfect schoolteacher handwriting setting out the patterns they were made to test.

And also...

My coworker brought another bag, full of yarn and...knitted blanket squares. Her mother's last started project, before she got too sick to continue. And she asked if there was anything I could do with it.

It turned out, there are twelve completed squares, and I quickly located the pattern book they are from amid those given to me. It's a book of 60 patterns, meant to be put together however the maker wishes into blankets of 20 squares. I figured out which of the numbered patterns were already made, and selected eight more that I thought might go well with them.

So now! I am working on completing! My coworker's mother's last knitting project!

And I really am feeling very good about doing it.

people don’t talk about hilda (from the netflix show) enough and how absolutely insane she is. and by that i mean how she takes the Traditional Hero trope to the absolute extremes. she is filled with overwhelming whimsy; adventure is drawn to her like a goddamn magnet and absolutely NO ONE can stop her from pursuing it. and if they even try to get in her way then fuck them. this kid’s normal tuesday means possibly dying multiple times and fighting The Horrors. everyone around her is concerned for her and the unstoppable magical girl powers that she wields but she absolutely WILL be a little shit about it because she was pulled from her whimsical littol cottage in the woods where she played with trolls and forced to move to fucking Normal Non-Magic Town. turns out going to Normal Town is only a minor setback and soon she’s back on the befriending magical creatures (a GIANT TALKING RAVEN) grind. she’s so Magical Girl Protagonist that even her own mother is terrified for her.

put simply: hilda subverts the magical girl trope in such a way that makes her a threat to normal society. and i love her for that

Honestly, I'm so tired of mentioning Celeborn in literally every trop or haladriel discourse and he hasn't even appeared on the show! But people talk about him like he's the main character. I hope he doesn't appear on the show at all

it's just obvious where this demand is coming from and that rubs me the wrong way.

a female character holding a sword, running around and having a hero's journey? not being a pure virgin mary and being tempted with the revenge/power/glory? being an ambitious brat and having a complicated, passionate relationship with the villain?! how dare she! the audacity!

quick, let's bring up the npc characters from her background lore and scream "guy-ladriel bad! where is celeborn! where is celebrian! they must domesticate my tradwife-elf asap!"

the issue i see with the constant demands for celeborn&celebrian from the lorebros is that they started it from the moment trop!galadriel was introduced and continue bringing them up instead of just following and appreciating galadriel's current storyline that explores her journey beyond what we know of from lotr.

Descendants The Rise of Red X Ever After High - Characters that I think they're similar and could be good friends with each other:

Bridget x Ginger - They're both pink-haired, sweet characters who are in fact lonely and just want to bake sweets for everyone, plus they're destined to be villains. I feel like Bridget and Ginger would love to bake together and share recipes with each other!

Red x Raven - They're both rebellious princesses who want to forge their own path and not end up like their villainous mothers. Red and Raven would totally bond over their shared evil mommy issues and artistic hobbies (Raven plays guitar and Red does grafitti art AND sew according to the BTIOTLW book).

Chloe x Darling - I mean.... They share the same surname and they're both princesses who trained to be knights + they're lesbians. HOWEVER, I feel like Darling would be much more understanding towards Red than Chloe given that she did have to lie about her White Knight identity and helped Raven sneak away from EAH during the Dragon Games even when half of the school was against her.

Ella x Briar - Beyond their sassy and not-so-royal personalities, they both understand and feel resentful about the lifes they've had or will have, willing to do whatever it takes for a better life. I feel like Ella would totally love being around Briar, who would make sure to spoil her and bring her along to some crazy shenanigans.
