been a minute since i stayed in my room all day by myself.

once upon a time, that was a pretty common occurrence.

and maybe i still won't, but it's how i've spent today so far.

feels a bit different now that i'm actually lifted off the ground.

while stretching out as much as i could, i accidentally knocked something off the bed with my foot. lazily rolling over to see what it was, there was no real intention in me to get up and grab it.

a stuffed plush of a bear laid pathetically on its face.

i glanced back at the other stuffed animals on the end of my bed.

"...but these ones feel special for some reason."

"must be the fabric quality."

..that's what i'd thought the day she won them for me, right?

they're not particularly notable in quality, in honesty.

still, they do feel special.

sliding off the bed and landing on my feet next to the bear, i lifted it to meet my face.

the stuffed animal's beady eyes, obscured partially by fur, returned my stare.

"you're only special because of her, huh?"

i can tell myself i'm not a stuffed animal person.

i'm not the type.

i'm not a sentimental guy.

and it'd probably be true,

if it weren't for her.

the other plush creatures had been arranged by size at the foot of my bed, resting against the baseboard.

the doing of a neater skeleton than i.

and, the un-doing of a messier skeleton than he.

sitting myself in front of the wrecked arrangement, i tried to recreate how they had been previously.

two equally exaggeratedly fat animals start the line off at the largest size - differently colored chickens.

floor bear is the dead-center of the grouping. it's got longer brown fur and a small gold ribbon tied into bow around its neck. the bow and the animal's eyes are somewhat obscured by the fur length.

then, a creature i can't quite determine between raccoon and squirrel which it might be.

either or, whatever that one is has a little fall cardigan on.

smallest, final of the line, is a something that is decidedly not an animal.

stuffed shape is more fitting, it being a heart; that kind of semi-shiny, soft material.

"I never want to be ap-heart!"

reads the front.

the embroidered font is fancy and silvery.

texturally, the words are rough.

really, they're the exact quality one expects from festival booth prizes.

so to be displayed on the end of my bed like this...

it's more a sentiment to the memory surrounding them.

another day like that would be nice. can admit to myself now that i really would enjoy it.

the festival setting in particular isn't quite the part i'm thinking about.

properly seated, the stuffies feel like an audience in a way i hadn't noticed before.

on the other hand, putting them anywhere but on my bed feels like disrespect.

for now, i'll turn them the other way.

turning them away feels wrong in a way i'm not sure i could specify if i tried, so i rotated the bear back to me.

it's a show of innocence.

of normal-ness.

i held my hands up to further prove to the inanimate object that innocence.

i put them back down because hands don't have anything to do with this.

In which a tailor’s shop has dubious customer service and a child preaches the virtues of slugs. Did my best to capture Nyx’s personality.. Writing them was a lot of fun! For the group swap!

The tailor’s apartment was a cramped little thing, nestled between a soup shop and a millinery, crouched low underneath Veilgarden’s eaves. It was two stories, one built atop the other, with shuttered windows carefully peering into the darkness. A faint light flickered.

Nyx Darkhelm stood in front of the shop, smoothing a fold of their suit. The amber hued light woven into the dreamlike linen glittered, casting a soft glow. Behind them, a hansom cab rattled, shuddering as it stumbled down the clumsily paved streets. 

Their friend had recommended the place. Surely it couldn’t be too bad.

The fox took a deep breath, their ever perfect posture stiffening further, before they knocked twice on the blue painted door. It swung open, a girl watching them curiously. “It’s too early,” she said, eyes narrowed. “We aren’t open yet.”

Nyx paused. “I must have been misinformed, my apologies,” they muttered. They glanced about the streets, considering where it would be best to wait. “I wanted to get a gift for a friend.”

She waited for a long moment, studying them. She was young. An urchin? No. She was dressed far too nicely, stood far too tall to be an urchin, even if she leaned against the frame of the door as if she had an army to back her up, as if she had no reason to be afraid, despite the late hour. “Oh, fine,” she snorted, shaking her head. A dark curl had escaped from her arrangement of hair, a few stray pins trailing. She must have been midway through disassembly. “My father won’t mind opening a little early.”

She stepped away, beckoning them into the entry hall. Someone had been drawing on the walls, scribbling in a dizzying amount of fonts. Scraps of poetry or doodles on higher levels, a childish scribble on the lower, nearest to the floor. “Interesting choice, coming here,” she called, deftly stepping over a discarded dolly faceplanted on the floor, little ribbons wrapped around its arms a colorful contrast to its dark skin. “My father isn’t known for practicality.”

Nyx paused, already halfway down the hall, considering what Alisha would like. “It doesn’t have to be practical.” It likely should be. Still, they weren’t above pushing their friend a little.

She laughed. “Your loss or luck, I suppose.” She offered no further explanation. “What’s your name?”

“Darkhelm. Nyx Darkhelm. It is a pleasure to meet you, Miss..?” They trailed off, waiting for a name. A flash of their teeth in a smile, sharp rows.

The girl laughed. “Marie-Suzanne. I stick with Suzy, typically. This way.” She pushed aside a curtain of purple fabric, streaked with orange like some distant memory of a sunset sky. 

They stepped inside, nearly stumbling back when the curtain fell into their face again, but braving it despite. They grinned nervously, gleaming teeth showing. They stepped inside. 

The tailor’s shop was sectioned off by more curtains, making a maze out of what could have been simplicity. Holes had been cut into the sides of scattered lanterns, allowing scattered light to slip out in strange shapes and shadows. A few strips of fabric lay half sewn on a table. A mannequin wrapped in a cape of arms stood amongst a pile of tiny painted blocks.

“I’ll go tell him you’re here,” Marie-Suzanne told them, already ducking behind a curtain of sharp blue. Her footsteps trailed away. 

In an instant, they were abandoned.

Nyx hesitated, fidgeting with the golden rose on their lapel, tail swishing back and forth. Doubts were beginning to swirl in their mind. Still, they were nothing if not adventurous on occasion.

“A gift?” The voice came from behind another of the curtains. “Right, of course. I’ll need specifics, of course.” The man who emerged had a child on his hip, one with Naples yellow eyes and a pale blue bow in her curly hair. He set her down and she toddled forwards, eyes focused on Nyx. They weren’t sure who to look at, with the disdainful gaze of the man, the wide eyed scrutiny of the child.

Finally, they settled on the man. The tailor, they assumed, leaning on a dragon headed cane. Strange patches of rippled material trailed up his neck, down the arms exposed from his sheer sleeve. Almost reminiscent of glass.

“Nyx Darkhelm. I’m in the process of acquiring a gift for a friend.” Another grin, their tail flicking back and forth. 

“Of course,” he smiled back. It was not a kind smile. “Call me Blank.”

The little girl stomped forward, reaching for Nyx. They froze, looking down at her. Without hesitation, she bumped her forehead into their leg, then looked up at them with a wide small-toothed smile. “Hello!”

They looked down at her, then back to Blank. He raised his eyebrows but said nothing, taking a seat beside the scrap covered table. “Er, hello,” they said, standing a bit stiffer.

The little girl blinked. “You’re fluffy,” she observed, with a peculiar brand of solemnity. Her little hands formed clumsy signs as she spoke, little gestures that they did not understand. “An’ your suit glows.”

“Ah, yes. It does.”

“That’s kinda nice.”

They nodded, considering. “Yes, I do find it quite nice.”

“You should wear some purple. I like purple. It’s the color of slugs Like Bijou! Bijou is yellow an’ purple an’ my best slug ever, but I gave him away because he wanted to go do more adventures. Now I don’t have a slug, but I do have a teeny tiny snake.” She took a breath and did not stop. “I think snakes are kind of good, but slugs are better. Slugs are all small and squishy, but snakes are too tricky and say mean things. Bijou didn’t say mean things. He said nice things. Slugs are always very nice, it’s in their,” a pause and a soft mumble as she sounded out the word, “in their nature.”

They tried to look back, think of if they had ever met a slug, one that was particularly purple or named Bijou. Nothing came to mind. “I see,” they said. They, in fact, were lying. “I am not purchasing anything for me, however.”

“Why not?”

“Well, it is a gift?” They glanced to Blank again. He made no movement to do much of anything, just watched his daughter. “A gift for someone else,” they thought it best to clarify.

The little girl thought about this, taking a seat on the ground and looking up at them, before nodding. “Okay.” Before they could open their mouth, continue their conversation with the tailor, she continued. “Do you have a name?”

“Ah, yes. Nyx.” They offered a shallow bow. Éadaoin did not bow back, just sat on the floor and began to pick her nose.

“I’m Éadaoin. Are you a fox?” Behind her, Blank’s faint smile grew, his gazer sharper than there was right for. They had the feeling they were being tested. They just didn’t know what they were being tested on.

“Ah. Yes, yes, I am.”

“Huh. Okay. I’m not a fox.” She squinted up at them.

“Yes, I could tell.”

“I like your flower. It’s shiny.”

“Ah. Thank you.”

Finally, Blank saw fit to cut in. “I think that our guest may wish to place their order before my scheduled client, little one.” He pulled himself up again, a few short gestures being directed towards Éadaoin before he offered Nyx a gloved hand to shake. His smile was genuine now, if no less sharp. In some way, they had passed. “We can discuss details, payment, and time restraints, of course. If it’s a fitted garment, I’ll need some sort of measurements. We have not technically opened yet, despite Suzy’s decision otherwise, so you have approximately a half hour until my client arrives.”

They took his hand, glancing down to the little girl who had already begun to lose interest, wrapping the pale blue ribbon that had sprung from her curls around her fingers in curving loops. “Wonderful,” they nodded. “I have nearly assembled an idea.”

“We’ll work together then, complete that thought,” Blank nodded. “I believe you’ll find that I am quite skilled in making simple ideas reality.” For some reason, they believed him.

Hoseok looked at you for a bit longer before he looked away, watching other guests walk around. “You know you don’t have to lie to yourself... And you don’t have to pretend that you’re okay.” He looked back at you with concern in his eyes.

Kim Taehyung, a name that used to have so much meaning to you, now, meant nothing. A man with vibrant blue hair, now turned brown, with a tall nose that had a beautiful dot detailed at the tip of it. A resplendent man with an appealing soul who had a gorgeous diamond ring adorned around his ring finger. A giant rock that shined so bright, even through your laptop screen, made your heart feel empty. She stood there beside him with the same ring fit snug around her finger.

That should’ve been you, you thought. But you were only dreaming.

Only in movies is where dreams come true.

You sat there in the dim light with shaking hands. Seoul never felt so quiet inside of your apartment. The usually busy streets seemed as if it was empty, but maybe that’s because you weren’t focused on the noises around you. Even with an opened window. The cool breeze flowed throughout the room made goosebumps rise on your skin. 

In front of you sat a beige colored envelope that had your name written in cursive with your address right beneath. It eyed you devilishly making you look away from the envelope to take a deep breath.

After the confession, months had passed and you were in a dilemma. Were you still in love with him? After being rejected, you were distraught and hopeless but that didn’t stop your heart from racing when you hear his name. It didn’t help that he was basically everywhere - his name in every article and his face plastered throughout Seoul.

Even the others have wondered if you were still in love with him but they rather asked you if there was someone new. The answer was no every time.

But that didn’t matter anymore because the time has come - it was now or never. You were finally going to know your true feelings. The answer that everyone has been thinking is finally getting answered: were you still in love with the man you once called your best friend?

Taking in another deep breath, you reached for the envelope and opened the heart-shaped seal. Inside was a white card and for some odd reason, you started to feel nauseous. Pulling out the card, you were greeted with beautiful designs. You held the card tightly in your hands as your thumb caressed the embroidery detailing of the border. In the middle of the card was a pink rose. It was engraved into the card, making smooth indentions. 

On top of the rose was their name written in gold, big & in cursive: Kim Taehyung & Yoon Miyoung.

Opening the card, a laugh erupted out of your mouth. And you laughed and laughed to the point tears pricked your eyes. The laughter turned into sobs, and soon enough, you found yourself crying foolishly. 

“Oh, Kim Taehyung!” You hiccuped. “You’re such an idiot.”

Through glossy eyes, you took one last glance at the card.

Involuntarily, tears were rushing down your cheeks again. Your heart pained with misery. How could he have the audacity to invite you to this? Even though it was months ago where you confessed your true feelings to him, it was basically an unspoken rule that you shouldn’t invite those to special things like these after they had been rejected by you. It physically hurts because, well, you should know, since you lived to tell the day.

Throwing the card back on the table carelessly, you pulled your knees up to your chest and cried into them. The room around you turned foul, staining you with melancholia. 

You still loved him. 

Your sobs filled the room effortlessly. With painful cries and a heart full of anguish, you didn’t hear Hoseok come in. 

The luxurious hotel stood before you. With jaw-dropping exterior design, you instantly felt out of place. The building was immeasurable. It was many stories high with large windows and a configuration between modern and traditional. The sun shined brightly towards the sparkling hotel making you squint your eyes just slightly. 

Suddenly in your peripheral vision, a tall suited man with brown hair came into view and instantly made a smile erupt on your face. “Hobi!”

“Hey Y/N!” Hoseok engulfed you into a hug that so was tight that it almost made you drop the box you were holding. It was white with a rose gold ribbon wrapped around it along with a big rose gold bow on top. “Oops, sorry!” He pulled away with a sheepish grin.

You laughed waving him off. “Haha, you’re good! But how are you? How’s the comeback and everything?” 

“Ah, it’s good!” He gave you a thumbs up. “I’m surprised we all found time to squeeze this huge event in, though.” You laughed shrugging your shoulders. “But, how are you? How are things? I feel as if I haven’t seen you in a while...” He lied.

“I’m good.” You nodded, a smile playing on your lips. “Doing better. I’m just working, and you know, living life.”

Hoseok raised a brow slightly, suspicious of you, before standing beside you. “I mean, that’s good to hear! I’m actually surprised you made it. I kind of wasn’t expecting you to come, if I’m being totally honest.”

The two of you walked inside the double doors and again, you were amazed. If the outside of the hotel was luxurious, you didn’t even know where to explain how the inside looked. It was beyond luxurious, it was just something that no words could explain. It was just breathtaking. 

“I thought about not coming for the longest time, but then, I found this gift,” You lifted up the box. “And I decided that I was going to go. But anyways,” You changed the topic. “I’m in awe, this place is seriously beautiful.”

Hobi glanced at you for second but decided not to question you. “Mhm yeah, this place is insane. A lot of other celebrities has had their wedding here.”

You nodded in agreement and surprise. Silence broke out between the two of you as he led you through the hotel and towards the actual wedding banquet. The silence that you were emitting as you both walked made Hoseok feel uneasy. A worried feeling bubbled inside of him, but, he had a gut feeling he already knew why.

When you both reached the banquet, Hoseok stopped abruptly in front of you. “You okay?” He asked perturbed. His heart ached for you.

You nodded with a perched brow. “Uh, yeah? Why wouldn’t I be?”

He frowned. “You know why.” He placed a caring hand on your shoulder. It hurts him to see someone special to him hurt like this. And it hurts him even more with the fact that Taehyung, someone who he considers a brother, was the reason why you were hurting. “I saw you...” He said, a weight lifted off his shoulders. “I didn’t mean to come in, but when I heard you were crying, I realized that you didn’t hear me come in.” He sighed.

“I wanted to check if you had gotten the invite already but when I heard you crying, I knew.”

You bit your bottom lip, looking at this nose rather than his sad eyes. “I’m over that now.”

“Still.” He squeezed your shoulder. “I was going to go in and comfort you but I decided it was better not to. So I left.”

You nodded slowly. “Did you tell Taehyung?” You looked at him as he shook his head furiously.

“Oh God no. I wouldn’t. Plus, I have no place in your guys business anyway. And I’m no messenger.” 

You let out a small breath relieved. “Thanks for not telling him.”

His dimples deepened as he smiled slightly, “Of course.” His hand fell to his sides before sliding into his pockets. “But I can’t help but worry about you Y/N. You’re one of my good friends.” He told you. “You know, you don’t have to go… You can still walk away.”

“Hobi, I’m fine.” You told him again. Sighing, you gave him a comforting smile. “I promise. I’ve moved on from what happened and it looks like he has too.” Taking his hand off your shoulder, you gave it a small squeeze. “I still consider us friends and I guess it’s only right for me to show my respects. Besides, I’ve already walked away.”

“But…”

You laughed. “It’s fine.” You smiled brightly and pulled him alongside you. “Plus, I’m already here. I’m surprised there’s no paps or anything! He did a good job hiding this whole thing for privacy.”

Hoseok sighed. He knew you weren’t doing fine because the way you sat there in your dining room table, crying into your knees, said otherwise. “He paid a lot of money to keep it as private as possible. He didn’t want any fans or paps to ruin this... special moment in his life. So he hired a lot of security.”

You fought a frown from forming on your lips.

“Right, I bet he sure did.” You nodded. “Uh, anyway, where do I put the gift?” You lifted up the box.

Hobi looked at it before taking it from your hands. “I’ll show you where everything is.”

“Wow.” Your eyes grew wide as the both of you walked inside. Right as you entered through the glass doors, you were greeted with a long table covered with a beige colored lace table cover. On top of the table was an open book where the guests can sign their name and write a message for the soon-to-be-married couple. Red roses were scattered throughout the top, making everything fit together nicely.

Beside the table was a large portrait of Taehyung and Miyoung in their suit and gown with bright smiles adorned on their faces as they looked at one another. “They seriously went all out.”

Hoseok hummed as he walked past the table to the left side of the room where there was a table for gifts and cards. “Hey!” He turned around. “You’re not going to write that it’s from you?” He pointed to the gift. You shook your head.

“No, there’s no need. He’s going to know it’s from me when he opens it.” You told him.

“Oh, okay. So this gift is specifically for Taehyung only?”

You nodded, “More or less. I also have a card for both of them.” You pulled out the card from your bag and handed it to him. 

He took it from you and didn’t question you any further. “Wow! I’m not sure if there’s even any room for any more gifts!” He laughed.

You laughed slightly, “Well, they’re a couple loved by many.” You watched Hoseok place the card on top of the other cards that the other guests have given. He then gave the box to one of the organizers by the table before turning around.

“Are you one of them?”

Your brow raised. “I-” You sighed. “Yeah, I’m happy for them.”

Hoseok looked at you for a bit longer before he looked away, watching other guests walk around. “You know you don’t have to lie to yourself... And you don’t have to pretend that you’re okay.” He looked back at you with concern in his eyes.

“I don’t have to do a lot of things but I still find myself doing them anyway. I can’t help it because at the end of the day, I was once his best friend and I guess I can’t find it in myself to despise him and hate him... Even if he did hurt me.” You shrugged. “I want to be there for him this one last time.”

“But was he there for you when you needed him the most?!” He raised his voice, causing the other guests to turn to look at him in surprise. He sighed and gripped your forearm, his voice lowered. “I don’t care if he didn’t reciprocate the same feelings for you, it was the fact that he let you walk away.”

You looked away from his piercing eyes.

“He’s supposed to be your best friend, he shoul-“

“No.” You shook your head. “That’s selfish of him to ask me to stay even after I told him I loved him. It’s just going to hurt us both more.”

“But if he loved you, even as just a friend, he wouldn’t have let you go like that. At least, not without a proper goodbye.”

“Well,” You pulled your arm away and turned around to look at the picture of the couple. “This is his chance at his last goodbye.”

Hoseok frowned. “What are you instigating? Are you leaving him?”

“I already did, Hobi. But no, this time, I’m leaving everything.”

His heart dropped. “What do you mean?”

“Nothing.” You laughed, shaking your head. “Never mind, ignore me. I’m just being dramatic.” You smiled. “Where do I sit?”

Hoseok eyed you before guiding you further into the banquet.

The ceremony was over and it was time for the reception. After catching up with your old friends and Taehyung’s family, you decided to explore the hotel. Suddenly, your phone rang and the name you least expected popped up: Kim Taehyung.

“Hello?” You answered.

You haven’t heard his voice in months. “Y/N.” His stern voice broke through the other line. “Where are you?”

His voice seemed deeper than it usually did and it sounded more forbidding. You instantly froze in the middle of the hallway. “I’m walking around the hotel... Why?”

“Come to my suite. Now. I’m in the presidential suite, room number 718. Doors briefly opened.”

Before you could reply, he had already hung up. You stood there for a second staring at the black screen as your heart raced. Did he open your present? Quickly, you rushed to the elevator.

Moments later, you found yourself standing in front of him. Your lips in a straight line as he looked stared at you. Taehyung sat at the edge of the queen sized bed with the box on his lap. “What is this? What does this mean?”

“It’s your wedding present.”

“This isn’t a fucking present, Y/N. This is depression in a box, I-” He ranted angrily, wrinkles formed in between his brows as he frowned. “I don’t even have words. I don’t know what to say.”

You frowned back. “What do you mean? Aren’t you happy?”

“How the hell am I supposed to be happy?!” He stood up quickly, making the box fall to the floor as the contents spilled out but he didn’t care. A dead rose laid lifelessly on the floor along with the thick black scrapbook that held so many memories.

“It’s my official goodbye.”

He walked towards you, calmer now. “I don’t want you to say goodbye.” He looked over at the gifts on the floor. “I don’t want these. I don’t want to end our friendship.”

"Taehyung,” You began. “We haven’t talked since I confessed. Doesn’t that say a lot on where we stand? Don’t you understand that we can never be friends like we used to be ever again?”

He shook his head. “No, because I will fight for you this time.”

“You’re married now.” You pointed out. “There’s no time for you to fight for me.”

“That’s not true.” His large hands took in your small ones. “Our friendship cannot be over because of that.”

You looked at him seriously. “You’re such an idiot.” You sighed, looking down at your hands. “I can’t be friends with you when I still love you.”

“Even after all this time, you still love me?” His eyes grew wide.

“I don’t know.” You said truthfully. “A part of me wants to say no, but honestly?” You looked at his eyes, looking for something - for anything, as long as it’s any form of hope. “I don’t think I can ever stop loving you.”

He pulled you closer. “I’m sorry.” Your head resting against his shoulder, your tears staining his tux.

“Don’t say you’re sorry.” You whispered. “Just don’t say anything.”

Silence. You were met with silence and it stayed like that for so long. With you in his arms and his head looking straight, he stood there. Emotions filing through him quickly that it almost made him pass out. 

That’s when you felt the tears on your shoulders. His salty tears sliding down to your arms. “I’m sorry that it had to be this way.” 

“Me too.”

You pulled away and wiped your tears. “I should go. You should be down there celebrating, not crying.” You reached up to wipe his stained cheeks. “You need to be with Miyoung, okay? She’s probably looking for you right now. Treat her well, Taehyung. Take care of her well, okay?”

Taehyung nodded, “Okay.”

You looked to the door then back at him. “Goodbye, Taehyung.” You started walking to the door but he held your arm back, preventing you from walking any further. You turned around.

“I don’t want this to be a goodbye.” He said quietly, eyes trained to the floor. “I don’t want to let go.”

You looked at him, your hands at your sides now. “You want a lot of things, Taehyung.”

“Then can you grant me one wish before you go?”

Perplexed, you nodded. “S-Sure.”

“This isn’t a goodbye.” He looked at you, piercing eyes burning hope through yours. “This is a see you later. When the times right, I hope, no, we will meet again. In better circumstances.”

Your smile quivered as he walked closer to you. “Then, I’ll see you when the times right.”

“Promise me.”

“I promise.” You spoke softly.

His eyes watered again as his hands slid to the sides of your face. He leaned forward and placed a chaste peck to your cheek. “I’ll see you later, Y/N.”

He took a step back, wiping his tears. You nodded, “I’ll see you later.” 

With one last look, you left the room for good.

Minutes after you left, Taehyung sat down on the floor with the gifts in front of him. Immediately, he picked up the dead rose that was crumbling and crunchy. He couldn’t believe it. After all these years, you still kept the rose he picked for you when you both were walking past a flower shop a long time ago.

“Oh my god, Tae, what are you doing now?” You laughed.

He turned around with a cheesy smile. “Becoming your very own flower boy, babe.” He picked up a single rose from the pot and sniffed it. “It smells almost as good as you.” 

You rolled your eyes. “You’re so cheesy.”

Taehyung laughed shrugging. “And you’re a beautiful blooming flower, my love, but too bad, I’m buying you a rose and you have to deal with my cheesiness.”

“What?” You perched your brow confused as you watched him buy the rose. “You didn’t have to buy me a rose, you dork. You know, you only buy roses for someone whose special to you. Like a special lady.”

“Yeah,” He nodded. “I know.” 

“Then...?”

He sighed. “You’re such an idiot. You! You dummy. You’re my special lady.”

“You’re so gross Tae. What’s gotten into you? You’re going to make me gag.” You punched his arm making him grab his new sore spot in pain. He was so dramatic.

“Ow, I take that back, I want my rose back. Gimmie!” He reached for the rose but you shook your head and stuck out your tongue. 

“Too late, no backsies. It’s mine now.” 

Tae fake frowned before you both broke out into waves of laughter.

His pointer finger slid to the welted petals making the petal falling off instantly. “I’m sorry.” He whispered, realizing where he made his mistake. He dropped the rose back down to the floor. “Fuck, I’m such an idiot.” He really did make it hard for you to not fall in love with him.

Looking at the scrapbook next, he hesitantly reached for it. Opening it, he was greeted with pictures upon pictures that were glued inside the book with dates written beneath them. Memories playing inside his mind as he looked through every picture. Whether they were candid pictures or selfies, he managed to break into smiles through every single one as he read the notes and captions you both broke for each picture. He felt happy looking at them - until he reached the last page, dated in 2015.

On the last page, there was a polaroid. It was a selfie of you in his hold, with his arms wrapped around you. Your right arm was out in front of both you to take the picture. His head was on top of yours, his boxy smile in display. His brown hair with green tips covered his entire forehead and eyebrows. You were smiling so bright, so happy at that moment. Beneath the picture was Taehyung’s handwriting. Neatly written, he wrote:

Her shoulders slumped.  She'd addressed her cover letter and filled out an application for the Torture Candy Sex Shop.  She'd passed the shop on several nights, spotted a Now Hiring sign, googled it, and found her way here.  A similar 'now hiring' sign hung between the brightly colored candy striped pillars of the flamboyant storefront.  In the window, a rainbow assortment of delights awaited purchase; colored spiral pops in purple and pink, orange caps atop magenta bottles, green candy canes, flowers of white icing atop violet petals dotted with tiny red berries their center, plus an oceanwave-like poof of cotton candies dyed blue and spun before a curtain of red Twizzlers all stood in stark contrast against the outside world full of ashen, cracked streets and the chipped, faded paints of the alley walls.  

A bit of her reflection in the glass showed a childlike happiness, a glitter in her eyes at the vision of sweets.  Upon seeing this reflection, she straightened her shoulders and pursed her lips as if to say Happy doesn't look right on me... Ugh, they'll probably force me to smile at this job.  She sighed to herself and entered the store to apply.  The job would not involve sales for the toys she loved, but she figured that at least if they hired her, she would not starve.

So she stepped across the threshold of flamboyancy and into the Tricky Treats Candy Shop, Home of the Trickster's Delight™.

Inside, pinatas of all sorts imaginable hung from the railing of the stairs to the loft, and along the loft railing as well.  A gilded sign and a red velvet rope across the stairs signified that the upstairs area was reserved for employees, only.  A large urn filled with decorated sticks advertized the various prices for the pinatas on display; the sticks were sold separately, and each stick did match a pinata above. Clear jars of candies assorted by color lined a rainbow wall.  A sickeningly pink frilly apron hung upon a coat rack near the door. Sunlight streamed in through the window and highlighted the stacks of Heart Shaped Boxes in various states of decorative gaudiness.  One heart shaped box laid open upon the workspace counter.

The workspace consisted of a reflective epoxy countertop which held an old-timey cash register and a large gumball machine, its globe filled with jawbreakers.  Behind this counter sat a workbench, above which sat shelves of mysterious gift-wrapped product.  An ornate four-tiered cascading chocolate fountain was anchored into the edge of the workbench.  Price tags cut in little squares in pastel colors, some underlined red to denote a sale, marked the shelf under each well-organized line of colorful products.  The products were eclectic in their design; A line of ceramic jars whose lids were replaced with white cloth were tied tight with red hemp.  Tubs and boxes were wrapped in colorful papers and tied tight with hemp or ribbon. Stacks of round, peach colored tins with gold etched in bevels joined gold boxes with red lacquered strawberries on the shelves.  White paper packages with lavender and sky blue labels sat on the shelves above a set of cabinet doors with brass handles.  The thin, babyfaced man behind the counter left this cabinet door ajar, which gave her a glimpse at the rolls of tissue paper and ribbon and wrapping supplies within.  The man snipped a bit of gaudy ribbon, neon orange with a magenta stripe down it's center.  He slipped the ribbon between his elegant pale thumb and the edge of his sharp silver scissors, and pulled.  The ribbon hissed as it slipped between the pad of this thumb and the bladed edge, and curled beautifully at the end of the scrape.  He wound this ribbon onto an equally gaudy heart shaped box before the tiny bell above the door jingled and caused him to look up at her.  She wondered why the bell failed to jingle when she first arrived.  Little did she know, he wondered the same thing.

“My apologies,” he said, “I didn't hear you come in, may I help you find something?”

“I'm... looking for a job if you know where I can find one of those,” she said.

“A jo- Oh, right, the hiring sign,” he said.

He sighed as if he wished someone else he knew would have applied for the job sooner.

“Well,” he said, “let me see your application.  You did bring one, yes?”

“Yes, but um, it was for, hey wait!” she said.

He plucked the papers out of her hand and read over them.  And as he read, his smirk grew.

“Okay dude, look, I was looking for this other place, google said it was right here, and here it isn't, but I still need a job, so-”

“I can't accept this application,” he said.

“Is it because it's for the other place?” she asked.

“What other place?” he asked.

“You know, the sex shop?” she said.

“Oh, no the sex shop is not a problem.  Why would the sex shop be a problem?” he asked.

“I mean, it's not a problem, that's the job I wanted,” she said.

“Hmm. Anyway, I'm afraid I can't accept an application without a name on it,” he said.

“Excuse me?” She said.

He turned the application around to reveal the fields for a first and last name were both blank.  The sight took her aback.  She knew she wrote her name on the application, it was the first thing she did after printing it out.

“Oh, well, I have a pen, may I have the application back and I'll scribble that information in,” she suggested.

“You know it's quite unprofessional, to give an application, resume, and cover letter, all without a name,” he chuckled.

“Quit messin' with me,” she said.

He turned around her resume and cover letter.  Where she had once printed her name in the header in large font capital letters, nothing had printed.  At the end of her cover letter, the last word was “Regards,” without a name written afterwards.  She wondered if she was dreaming, or if she'd had a seizure or stroke at an early age.

“You know, if you don't want them knowing your real name at the sex shop, you can use a fake name,” he suggested.

“Uh, I don't mind if they know my real name,” she said, “they kinda need that for tax purposes, right?”

“Not really.  Do you perhaps have a stripper name?”

“A what?”

“A stripper name.  A street name?  A … sex toy worker name?  Hell, even a tumblr username?” he asked.

“Why?”

“Because we have to put something on this application before you can turn it into the sex shop, and your real name just won't do,” he said, “So, what would you like to be called.... Miss?”

“Communication is usually my strong suit, I apologize, let me just think-”

“Miss Communication, it is, then,” Loki said.

He scribbled Miss Communication on her application.

“Uh...” she stammered.

“Mind if I call you Miss Cum, for short?” He asked.

She burst out laughing.

“Sure, that's fine, just put down whatever you think will land me the job,” she said.

She reached her hand out to him, with the intent of shaking hands.

“So Hi, I'm Miss Communication!  Apparently, I answer to Miss, or Come. What's your name?” she asked.

He took her hand and kissed her knuckles gently.

“Loki,” he said.

The magic bell tinkled frantically.  Loki looked past Miss' shoulder and squeezed her fingertips in excitement.

“And here comes our most important customer!” he whispered.

He dropped her hand, stood up straight, and brushed his hair back over his ears.  Miss turned, but saw no one in the shop.  

“Quick, hide yourself,” Loki said.

“Eh, what?” she said.  

Loki pulled her behind the counter and pressed for her to stay down.  A shadow passed over the door, and in walked a tall, broad shouldered man with long thick hair and ice blue eyes.  He greeted Loki with a thunderous voice.

“Hello again!” the man said!

“Ah, Thor! Welcome back!  How are you today?”

“I'm well!  Thank you for asking,” Thor said.

Miss peeked over the counter.  She lost the will to hide upon seeing the tan muscular man's broad smile.

“Holy shit,” she said as she popped up from behind the counter.

“Oh, hello!” Thor said.

Loki cleared his throat.

“Thor, this is Miss, Miss, Thor.  Miss, could you go run the IC inventory in the stockroom for me?” Loki said.

“Hi,” Miss said to Thor.

Under the counter, Loki pushed her away from them.

“Get lost, I have work to do,” Loki muttered.

“Uh huh,” Miss said.

Thor smiled, looked at his feet and scoffed to himself.  He looked back to the pair, locked eyes with Miss, and spoke eagerly.

“So I came by to pick up something special for my girlfriend,” he said.

Miss' jaw tightened in pained disappointment as Thor emphasized the word girlfriend, however, she retained her goofy grin.  Thor turned his attention onto Loki.

“And I just knew you'd have something amazing for me to give her,” Thor said.

“Well, I was just working on something amazing, but it's not quite done yet!” Loki said.

Loki waved his elegant hand over the gaudy heart-shaped box with the crazy magenta striped neon orange ribbon.

“Perfect! I have some time, is it a bother if I stay?  I love to watch you work,” Thor crooned.

“I vote stay,” Miss said.

Loki, blushing from the compliment, elbowed her.  He gave her a look that both silenced and comforted her.  His look was one part “you're in no trouble, but play along,” and one part “let me handle this, I've got a plan.”

“Of course it's no bother!” Loki said to Thor.

To Miss, he whispered, “keep quiet or you're fired before you even fill out the w-4.”

Loki cleared his throat and returned to work.

“Trainees,” he scoffed, “am I right?”

Loki curled another ribbon for the gaudy heart-shaped box.  He selected a cardboard insert for the box and lined it with an azure tissue paper. He side-eyed Miss as he took a gold tin with enamel cherries inlaid from the freezer.  Miss looked at Thor.  Thor beamed, concentrated on everything Loki did.  Miss turned her attention to Loki.  He removed a small red fruit, a cherry.  The neglected cherry pitter rested on a hook on a pegboard near the fountain.  He dipped the cherry, pit and all, into the fountain by the stem, and sat it upon a tiny circle of pinkish paper.  After repeating this process six more times, he reached for a shaker full of sprinkles.  Miss watched as his hand glided past the sprinkles and to what appeared to be a shaker of crushed red pepper.  He shook out an even coating of the pepper, then reached for a pippete bag, filled with a hot pink icing.  He wound the stem in spiral of this icing and wrapped these six up.  He transferred them to six out of the thirteen divots in the cardboard spacer.  He then prepared to make six more, but as Miss squinted, she noticed that whatever fruit he pulled did not look like a ripe cherry.  This fruit looked wrinkled.  As he pulled the next one, she spotted it clearly; these were carolina reapers.

Miss's eyes widened and she looked at Thor to see if he noticed.  He had the exact same studious, unchanged beaming smile on his face as when Loki first began his work.  Reapers dipped, iced, and wrapped up, six more filled the divots.  Loki pulled a special clear plastic container from the stainless steel refrigerator.  Inside, a piece that looked like an ornate corsage shone through with pearlescent violet petals and dewdrops crafted with boiled sugar glaze.  Loki uncovered the artisenal confection, scooped it into the center of the heart-shaped box.  Thor beamed.

“Beautiful,” Thor said.

“Thank you for the compliment, I am glad you enjoy it!” Loki said.

He closed up the box and sealed it with the gaudy neon ribbon.  Thor took out his wallet, handed Loki some bills, received his change and left with a polite wave to Miss.  She watched his sculpted ass as he left.  As the magic bell tinkled to denote his exit, Miss turned to Loki with her hand in the air.

“Fuck the hell yes!  Way to get my back with that mystery girlfriend, you are awesome!” she said.

“Your back?  I've been poisoning this mystery bitch for months, believe me, Miss, I am doing this all for myself,” he said.

“Wait, for clarity, you gay is good, you poisoning people is bad,” she said.

“Oh please, I never send her anything I wouldn't let him eat on accident. So no, it won't kill her, not that I haven't thought about it, but I want it to make her wish she was dead,” Loki said, “so at this point I've hit her with the hottest, foulest, nastiest flavoring I can find and she still won't fucking break up with him.”  

He slumped hopelessly against the counter and looked toward the door with longing.

“He must be absolutely incredible in the sack,” he said.

“Have you tried sending him back with, like, normal shit?” she asked.

“What do you mean?” he asked.

“Like, normal, delicious chocolates, in a pretty box with a nice note,” she said.

“Why would I do that?” He asked.

“Because, I mean, he keeps bringing her what you send, doesn't that kinda mean she likes it?”

Loki sighed.

“You might be right.  He's a kinky bitch, I know that,” Loki said, “it's very possible she likes the suffering.”

“How do you know he's kinky?” Miss asked.

“Work here for a couple of weeks,” Loki said, “you'll understand real quick.”

“So, does that mean I got the job?” Miss asked.

“Can you start tonight?” Loki asked.

“Uh, I mean, I'm here, so, sure, I guess?” Miss asked.

“Then you're hired,” Loki said, “go put on that apron.”

She looked to the coat rack by the door, upon which the sickeningly pink frilly apron hung.  She looked back to his uniform, a striped shirt and black slacks and tie.

“I don't have to wear one if you don't,” she said.

“You're no fun,” he said.

“Look, if I'm really working here tonight, you should probably show me what I'm supposed to be doing,” she said. “Oh, you're working,” Loki said, “I was just about to take down the Now Hiring sign and lock up for the night.”

“Wait, if I'm working tonight, and you're locking up now, what am I supposed to do?”

“Training,” he said cryptically.

He walked out the door and tugged on the Now Hiring sign.  He turned the hanging Open signboard to Closed on his way back inside.  The neon open signs shut themselves off, and velvet curtains of deep violet descended over the windows to hide the treats within.

“Miss? I'll need you to stand over here, please,” Loki said.  

He gently held her by the wrist and guided her away from the workspace. The business cards on the cash register each jumped into the air and flipped, one by one.  Before the jump, each white card read “Tricky Treats Candy Shop, Home of the Trickster's Delight™!” in candyapple red ink.  After the flip, the black backside of each card contained candyapple red lettering which read “Torture Candy Sex Shop” and in much smaller letters below, “(Also the Home of the Trickster's Delight™)”.

“What the theoretical fuck,” she muttered.

“Oh dear, I'm afraid I'm not accustomed to having others in the shop for the transition,” he said, “please pardon me.”

Loki pulled her against his chest just as a squadron of sexy mannequins pranced past with boxes of gear.  She yelped as their chests collided.  He slid his hand to the small of her back and took her other hand in his.  He pushed his right toe between her feet, then kicked it out to step to the right, pushing her foot to the right in the process, causing her to step to the right along with him.

“Terribly sorry, try to keep the tip of your toes pointed towards mine, and if I push, you step back,” he said as he pushed her.

She stepped back.  A mannequin bolted behind Loki, hauling the hot, still cascading chocolate fountain.

“And if I pull you, you step forward,” he instructed.

His right foot stepped backward, so she stepped forward with her left, kept the toes of her left shoe pressed against the toe of his right. He pulled her, she stepped forward as he stepped back.  She collided against him as he stopped abruptly.  Mannequins shot by them on every side, and when he pushed her forward again his legs spread to take impossibly long steps.  She strained and reached backwards with her heels in an attempt to keep up with his wide gait.  The inner seams of their pants crossed paths and built friction between their legs as they waltzed among the chaos.  He pressed his back against the back of a bent mannequin, which lifted and swiveled to its left.  Loki swiveled to his left, kept their backsides together, and Miss twirled to the right to compensate.  The mannequin walked away and Loki swiveled again.  When Miss twirled herself into place, she felt her rump brush against the edge of the counter.

“Up,” he said.

He lifted on her waist, and she bounced up to sit on the counter.  He jumped up and straddled her lap with his knees on the countertop as a mannequin ran a swiffer broom beneath them.  She looked at him with a face full of uncertainty at the correctness of their intimate proximity.  Loki smirked.  His eyebrows darted up for a instant, as he pulled away from her face and pressed against her breastbone.

“Down,” he said.

He pushed her, and her back hit flat against the countertop, as he himself hopped down and ducked below the counter until his head sunk between her open thighs.  She could not see this, as her head hung free over the opposite edge of the counter. When she looked to the ceiling, just overhead, a metal bar containing many hangers full of lingerie swished over her.  She sat up to find Loki's smirking face still between her legs.  She pointed her finger right to the cute bridge of his pale nose.

“Not unpleasant, but not okay,” she said.

“I do hope you'll pardon the mess,” he replied, “things get a bit different in here come sundown, nothing looks the same after dark here.  Not even me.”

A lollipop tree swept over his head, over her lap, and her finger caught a clear red pop.  She caught it as it fell from the tree, before it could bonk Loki on the head.  She looked down at him.  His baby face appeared to age.  The smooth, porcelain skin grew a touch more loose and porous.  Parentheses like creases pressed themselves into the edges of his muzzle, crows feet imprinted at the corners of his intense eyes.  The kiss of age rendered him no less attractive, only different.  Miss lifted the gemlike red candy.

“Can I have this,” she asked.

He stood up, put his hands around her waist and drew her from the countertop.  He took the lollipop from her and flung her towards the entrance door, but kept hold of her hand as a line of mannequins ducked down and shuffled between them under their arms.  He lifted their hands and spun back into her arms.  While he spun, he dropped the lollipop back into a second mobile lollipop tree and withdrew a different, teddy bear shaped pop.  He unwrapped it and presented it to her.

“How about this one,” he said, “it's safer!”

“Sure,” she said.

She bit the head of the lollipop and closed her lips around its round waist.  A mannequin barreled toward the two of them.  Loki, wide eyed, silently asked for a little push.  Miss pushed him forward as she pushed herself back out of its path.  Her heel caught some unseen obstacle as she stepped back.  Loki wheeled to face her, grabbed her palm as she fell, yanked her towards him, spun her back into his arms.  She looked up at him wide eyed, and sucked down the cherry flavor from her teddy bear lolly.  The magic bell tinkled out an alarm.  The mannequin squad jumped, scrambled to their final positions.  Outside the last rays of sun disappeared behind the mountains.  The candies that were left on the shelves transformed into various adult novelties and sexy sundries.  The assorted candies in the stacked glass bowls became individually wrapped specialty condoms, energy pills, and single use lubricant packets.  Packets of Fruit Stripe Gum unwrapped themselves and reformed into striped edible underwear, as displayed on one previously nude mannequin. Packets of twizzlers unwound and tied themselves in intricate Japanese knots around a rope-bondage mannequin.  The long, twisted spiral lollies in the vase turned into pyrex wands.  Miss' wide eyed expression turned to one of concerned confusion as her teddy bear melted in her mouth to take the form of a small cherry red anal plug. As she continued to suck on this new-found pacifier, it provided the same cherry flavor.

“That one does look cute in you,” he said.

He stretched out a long, elegant finger and pressed the button on the butt of the plug.  It wobbled, then the edges of Miss' lips blurred as the vibrator whirred.  She pushed the button and it pulsed rapidly, pushed once more and it switched off.  She pulled the plug from her lips with a slurp and stared at it in suspicion.  Loki smirked at her, and each new wrinkle the sunset brought with it displayed itself upon his face.

“You seem shocked at the change,” Loki said.

“I'm just surprised that it's still cherry flavored, considering, y'know, where it usually goes,” she said.

She popped the plug back in her mouth and continued to suck on it.  Loki chuckled.

“You're going to have a lot to learn from my clientele, I can already tell.”
