THE FLAGELLATION OF CHRIST, 1280 by CIMABUE
This panel shows one of the most important moments in the Passion. Before being crucified and killed by the ROMANS, CHRIST was bound to a pillar and flogged by ROMAN troops.
While CHRIST and his tormentors are in the background, the background is covered in gold (a reflection of CIMABUE’s BYZANTINE roots), and the two towers represent the architecture of OLD JERUSALEM.
The positioning of the figures and architectural elements shows CIMABUE experimenting with illusionistic spatial effect, though he would never quite master the art of creating the complete illusion of perspective.
This is the only work by Cimabue in a public collection in the United States. It was purchased for the Frick collection in 1950 on the initiative of Henry Clay Frick's daughter, Helen Clay Frick.

The Flagellation of Christ
Artist: Caravaggio (Italian, 1571-1610)
Date: 1607
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: Museo di Capodimonte, Naples, Italy
Description
The Flagellation of Christ, in art sometimes known as Christ at the Column or the Scourging at the Pillar, is an episode from the Passion of Jesus as presented in the Gospels. As such, it is frequently shown in Christian art, in cycles of the Passion or the larger subject of the Life of Christ.
Flagellation at the hands of the Romans is mentioned in three of the four canonical Gospels: John 19:1, Mark 15:15, and Matthew 27:26, and was the usual prelude to crucifixion under Roman law. None of the three accounts is more detailed than John's "Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged" (NIV).

after all this time lenu still somehow has no idea that for lila she represents everything lila could have been given the same opportunities (they are two sides of the same coin in the most literal possible sense, lenu’s failures are her own in all but name, i think lila experiences the same kind of frustration you feel when you’re in a dream & you’re forced to watch yourself make decisions you would never make in a thousand years but you’re paralyzed, helpless to stop it) and of COURSE lenu doesn’t realize this, not only because she hates herself but because she is fundamentally incapable of seeing beyond herself in any way that really matters
