[Video: fan animation focusing on Alastor and Lucifer from Hazbin Hotel set to “Perception Check” by Tom Cardy with subtitles at the bottom in all capital letters for the lyrics. The art style is reminiscent of the original animated series with detail given to the characters’ expressions for humorous effect.
The song starts, “So you notice that one of the hooded figures is a little shorter” as Lucifer, looking as if he stands at maybe Alastor’s ankles, glares up at the radio demon with clenched fists.
The song continues quickly as if cutting off the last line with “I cast Vicious Mockery” with the subtitles rendering the spell’s name in a stylized fiery font. Alastor grins mockingly with blood running down his chin as a glowing green 20-sided die floats above his hand. The shot changes to focus on said die, revealing that every side has a 20 on it, while the lyrics continue, “Nat 20, let’s go!”; the roll of the die is rendered in the subtitles in the same stylized font before returning to normal for the rest of the line. Alastor’s eyes glow red before his fist closes around the die, his expression now amused.
The next line is “You’re a short muthafucka and nobody likes you” while Alastor poses and sings into his microphone, his color scheme changing to the funky green and purple seen in some of his musical segments from the series. Lucifer, depicted at his regular height instead of being comically small, looks up with confused irritation as Alastor wags an index finger in his face mockingly.
Alastor dances a little and plays with his microphone staff as if it were a flute to accompany the music while the subtitles read out musical notes in brackets instead of lyrics. This is abruptly cut off by a shout of “SHORT” (text made to take up the whole background instead of being relegated to the bottom of the screen) with Alastor pointing his microphone down at the now ankle-sized Lucifer, one hand by his mouth as if making sure that the tiny man with the sculpted butt cheeks can hear him.
Alastor gestures to the other hotel residents and staff, minus Charlie, off to the side as they almost all look over with the exception of Vaggie crossing her arms. The song continues, “Everybody says ‘Look how fucking short that guy is’” while the shot changes to show them all leaning in toward each other with conspiratorial grins, including Niffty up on a nearby table. The scene zooms back in on Lucifer turning purple in indignation as he grips his cane so hard it begins to bend.
Alastor leans in with a paper clutched in one hand as Lucifer glares in rage, and the song continues, “And that stops you from forming meaningful relationships”; Alastor then gestures to Charlie behind Lucifer, who is looking away with a sad frown and rubbing at one of her arms uncomfortably. Lucifer looks surprised and upset before he turns back to look on with confused annoyance as Alastor unrolls the paper he was holding to reveal that it was divorce papers from Lilith reading, “Reason: Too Short”
The scene changes to show Alastor posing gleefully with one hand to his chest as he points his microphone staff up to the sky, and the shot continues upward to show the pearly gates of Heaven while the song goes, “When you were born, everybody thought that you were just a head”; the camera then stops at a younger-looking Lucifer with a halo and six large wings that appear to be connected to his grinning head with no visible body.
The next line goes, “But then the doctor said” with the subtitles exchanging the word “doctor” with the word “angels” (made larger to emphasize the replacement) while various angels that appeared as background characters in the show float on in. Their many-eyed forms are then shown in greater detail as one of them holds up an index finger and the song shouts, “WAIT”
Lucifer then turns, nervously sweating as many fingers point at him and the line goes on with “This stupid muthafuckin tiny short ass baby got a tiny little itty bitty body”; this is punctuated by even closer shots of him as he begins to tear up, each zoom revealing more of his miniature body in small blue robes.
The song concludes, “And I hate it” as the angels look varying degrees of offended and disgusted. The gates of Heaven burst open with a clang as one of said angels literally kicks out the crying baby, his halo tumbling away as the angel flips the bird to the falling Lucifer. End description.]
