No no this is very much the point.
Obi-wan knew it was a mistake because he took on Maul. Anakin has never killed a Sith Lord. Obi-wan did as an apprentice, and if you watch The Clone Wars or engage with the comics you know this haunts Anakin. He has the ego of a sentient planet with the fragility of a soap bubble. He's the Chosen One, meant to kill all the sith, but he barely even gets the chance to fight one! He fought Dooku and got rocked, he fought Ventress and it went alright, he somehow is always just barely missing Grievous. Meanwhile Obi-wan killed Maul, fought returned Maul and Savage Oppress to a standstill, beat Ventress many times, and while he also got tossed around by Dooku, Kenobi actually beats Grievous--the famed Jedi killer--several times, and it's why he's chosen for the mission to Utapau.
That's why Obi-wan looks so sad when he says "don't try it." Because "It's over Anakin, I have the high ground" was a goad. Anakin has been waiting, desperate to prove he's better than Kenobi. Now this is his chance. To beat his master with the same move that gained his master fame throughout the entire order. Obi-wan knows this, he knows the second he planted the idea in Anakin's head that Skywalker's ego would do the rest of the work for him.
Obi-wan tricked Anakin into a trap he warned his beloved apprentice about a thousand times. "I will do what must be done," but it's at that moment, tears in his eyes, he knows he can't ever be happy about the consequences.
Everyone remembers that in Episode 3 Obi-Wan had the high ground. But no one thinks about how in Episode 1 he had the lowest of the low ground and still killed Darth Maul. So the real lesson is don't fight Obi-Wan one on one. He'll lie to you about what's important and kill you anyway.

There’s that indescribable thing about watching the fight scene in Revenge of the Sith, where it feels so tense but so dramatically desperate. I don’t know how to describe it except I never got the feeling that the two characters were desperate to kill each other or even win the fight.
It always felt more like Obi Wan was fighting to stop Anakin from taking one more step into the Dark Side and Anakin was fighting Obi Wan to let out all the pent-up frustration he’s been feeling since he was a Padawan.
It’s more like two brothers who can’t figure out how to communicate, and everything’s come to a head, so they just start whaling on each other, as much out of confused love as it is resentment. I feel like I’m not putting it into words right, but there’s definitely something desperate in there that I can’t articulate, which no other movie scene does.
(I mean obviously at the end of the fight one of them is going to have to face killing the other, but that almost feels like…the pretense for the fight? not what each of them is truly fighting for?)

honestly we really should talk more about the fact that the Mustafar duel didn't use stunt doubles and wasn't sped up in any way. Hayden and Ewan were just that good at dueling each other

The Mustafar duel between Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Anakin Skywalker is the greatest if not my favorite lightsaber duel of Star Wars if not my favorite fight scene in any movie.
It’s the most tragic, most epic & most heartbreaking duel between brothers/ best friends. Also this duel has a killer score with #battleoftheheros

When even Obi Wan has these kind of cruel thoughts, and feelings... It's not advisable to get in the way of the swing of his lightsaber...

You ever think of how much of a fucking prodigy Anakin was?
Like, Obi-Wan fought Maul at 25, pretty soundly got his ass handed to him for a lot of that fight, and only won because Maul wasn't expecting him to triple flip his way out of a pit.
And this is after training with a lightsaber since toddlerhood.
Then you have Anakin, 19 years old, a decade of training under his belt, actually doing pretty ok against Dooku for a while there? This is a Jedi MASTER in his 70s, decades of experience, trained by Yoda. And Anakin manages to survive more that 5 minutes against him.
Then only three years later, absolutely curbstomps Dooku on the Invisible Hand.
Like, they weren't fucking kidding when they said Anakin was one of the greatest duelists in the Order

This scene kills me. She knows in her heart that Anakin is different. She goes to save him anyway.
