Baby You Were My Picket Fence [Chapter 5: Paradise City]
Tumblr media
You are a first grade teacher in sunny Los Angeles, California. Ben Hardy is the father of your most challenging student. Things quickly get complicated in this unconventional love story.
Song inspiration: Miss Missing You by Fall Out Boy.
Chapter warnings: Language, some sexual content (not smutty).
Link to chapter list (and all my writing) HERE
Taglist: @blushingwueen @queen-turtle-boiii @everybodyplaythegame @onceuponadetectivedemigod @luvborhap @sincereleygmg @stormtrprinstilettos @loveandbeloved29 @ohtheseboysilove @jennyggggrrr @vanitysfairr @bramblesforbreakfast @radiob-l-a-hblah @xox-talia-xox @killer-queen-xo @caborhapch @kimmietea @asquiresofftime @hardzzellos @sleepretreat @ramibaby @jonesyaddiction @ixchel-9275 @omgitsearly @lovepizza-cake11 @deacy-dearest @shishterfackisback @mrbenhardys @deaky-with-a-c If I forgot anyone, please yell at me :)
The blue chalk moves swiftly with shrill little squeaks over the board. You’re dressed in a floral red dress, leggings, sensible sable flats, and fuzzy woolly mammoth earrings. The kids love to see what sort of eccentric accessories you wear each day; there’s even a space on the board reserved for it. Today’s flair is: woolly mammoth earrings! (Please don’t touch unless you ask first!!)
“Okay my lovely children, let’s practice using each of this week’s spelling words in a sentence. Who can remind me what the first word on our spelling list is?”
“Oh! Oh!” Brendyn—who you mentally mix up with Brayden or Kayden at least twice a day—leans out of his chair and waves his arm hysterically. Dear god, please send a plague to wipe the unnecessary Y baby name trend off the face of the planet. “I can!”
“Go ahead, Brendyn.”
“Throw,” he announces proudly, as if he’s just won the Olympic medal for elementary-school writing.
“Awesome job! That’s right!” You transcribe it on the board: 1. Throw. “And who thinks they can come up with a sentence using the word throw?”
Eli, as he’s doodling all over his worksheet, says: “If you don’t like someone, you can throw them out of a window.”
You swallow noisily as you collect your thoughts. The other students are alternately giggling cautiously or gasping, scandalized. “Now, Eli...”
“Yes, Miss Teacher?” he prompts.
“It’s nice to raise our hands and wait to be called on when we have something to share.”
“Oops.” He raises his hand.
You sigh heavily. “Could you come up with a different sentence, please? One that is more school-appropriate? Remember we had a whole talk last week about school-appropriate topics. Right class?”
“Yes, Miss Y/L/N!” they agree in unison. That conversation hadn’t, perhaps shockingly, been inspired by Eli. A chatty, beach-blond, future surfer bro named Dexter had discovered his father, a prominent cinematographer, in a compromising position with the nanny—in the jacuzzi tub, no less—and felt the need to divulge that during Story Sharing Time. Worst parent phone call ever.
“Give it another try, Eli,” you say encouragingly.
“Taking spelling tests makes me want to throw up.”
You drop your face into your hands as the class howls in laughter. “Okay, very funny, but I still think we can come up with something more appropriate. Does anyone else have an idea?”
Maisy raises her hand timidly. Oh, hallelujah.
“Yes, Maisy!”
“Always remember to throw away your trash.”
“Wonderful!” You write the sentence on the board. “No littering. I like it. Save the sea turtles. Maisy, as a reward, you may give Creampuff one pumpkin seed.”
“Yay!” Maisy leaps out of her seat and sprints to Creampuff’s cage behind your desk. It’s your third year teaching with Creampuff, and the poor hamster is decisively in geriatric territory; she’s morbidly obese and her eyes are bluish with cataracts. But the children adore her, and Creampuff has always been wonderfully sweet and never bites. You just hope that when the time comes, she has the decency to kick the bucket over a long weekend so you can dispose of the body in secret and whip up a cheery story to tell the kids about how Creampuff went to live in an organic vegan farm or a hamster sanctuary or a retirement community in sunny Tampa Bay, Florida.
“Okay friends,” you announce. “Go ahead and practice coming up with sentences on your worksheet. Then we’ll chat in five or ten minutes and see what we’ve got. Ready, set, go!”
As students’ heads bow and pencils begin scratching against paper, you circle the room peeking over shoulders and making suggestions here and there. When you reach Eli’s desk, you crouch down so your gaze is level with his.
“Hey, Eli.”
“Hi,” he replies mistrustfully, his blue eyes narrow under dark curls.
“I just wanted to let you know that I thought your sentence ideas were very funny and very, very clever. But they just weren’t the best choices to use in class. Do you understand why?”
“Yeah,” he says, smirking a little. Of course you do, you’re the smartest kid in here.
“And I really appreciated you raising your hand to speak once you were reminded.”
“Thanks.” He’s actually bashful now, his high olive-skinned cheeks flushing.
“Are you still going to help me clap the erasers after class today?”
His eyes light up like wildfire. “Can I?”
The trap’s been sprung. Clapping erasers is like cocaine for first graders. “You betcha. If the rest of our spelling lesson goes smoothly.”
“Okay!” He immediately picks up his pencil and begins jotting down sentences. The handwriting is definitely a work in progress, but Eli’s spelling and grammar are immaculate. You can’t help but smile to yourself as you walk away; you’re feeling triumphant, of course, but there’s something else as well.
I’m proud of you, demon kid.
~~~~~~~~~~
Ben is standing on your doorstep, dressed in black, a potted calla lily in his hands. And at first he’s got that unnerving veneer, he’s serious and intimidating and smoldering; but then you find his eyes and his smile breaks open like cracked glass.
“Hi,” he says meekly.
“Hi.” You point to the calla lily. It’s a vivid green, like his eyes, like the serrated continents of the Earth from space. “Is that for me?”
“Yes, actually. It’s a gift, but it’s kind of a joke too.”
“How’s that?”
“It’s fake.” He grins. “So you can’t kill it.”
You laugh and take the pot, leaning back so the silk calla lily doesn’t tickle your nose, doesn’t rub against your makeup. “Come on in, Mr. Hardy.” Ben follows you, his hands in his jacket pockets, peering around watchfully. You find a temporary home for your new plant on the kitchen counter, right next to your latest purchase; you rest your hand, not-so-subtly, on the brand new, mint green, vintage record player. “Check this bad boy out.”
“Wow!” Ben leans down to examine it, running his fingertips over the turntable. Then his eyes flick to the box of vinyl records. “And you’ve already got listening material!”
“Lots of Queen, you’d totally approve.”
“Zeppelin?”
“Naturally.”
He flips through the records quickly: The Eagles, The Stones, Guns N’ Roses, The Beatles, The Cars, Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, Fleetwood Mac, U2, Hendrix, Elton, Nirvana. “Love it. I’m pumped. How much did all of this cost you?”
You crinkle your nose in lighthearted defiance. “It’s rude to talk about money, Mr. Hardy. Not a lot. Amazon is an amazing thing. And I’ve been collecting records for years. Yard sales, thrift shops, wherever. Some of them were my parents’ before I commandeered them.”
“I’ll ask again.” He takes out his wallet and starts counting bills, the paper shuffling in his hands. “How much for the record player? Estimate the rest.”
“Ben,” you protest, dismayed.
“Y/N,” he teases.
“You can’t buy everything for me,” you say gently.
“I’m not buying. I’m renting. I get to choose what to play whenever I’m here.” He unfolds $300 and lays it on top of the record player. “Will that cover it?”
You gape at the money. Yes, that’s about right. “Ben...I’d let you request music for free.”
“I don’t want requests. I want everything.” And then he grins, and it almost rips the floor out from under you. Oh god, I love this man.
You’ve never said those words aloud. You’ve never talked about his refrigerator magnet confession. But it’s somewhere in the space between you like a circling ghost, like a promise, like shared blood singeing under flesh.
“But,” Ben says, bringing you back into focus. “For now we should probably get going.”
“Right.” You grab your purse and jacket as Ben calls an Uber. “Where are we meeting them, anyway?”
He winks at you, his face illuminated by the glow of his cellphone screen. “Not the fucking Olive Garden.”
The Uber is a BMW with leather seats and a minibar installed in the backseat. As it cruises through downtown L.A., Ben tells you about how Joe has an apartment in the city, how Rami splits his time between his loft here and another in New York, how devout Londoner Gwilym is in town for work. You down a tiny Absolut Vodka to ease your nerves. “And when do I get to see your place, Mr. Hardy?”
He chuckles noncommittally. “We’re here,” he declares, glancing up through the BMW’s tinted windows. Outside is an upscale nightclub called The Edison. Then he turns to you. “Two things,” he says, holding up his index and middle fingers. There’s a gold ring on each. “First, don’t forget about the low profile.”
“That shouldn’t be difficult since we’re...” Air quotes. “Not dating.”
“Good. And secondly, don’t be anxious. They’re going to love you. You’re...”
“Charming?” you suggest, batting your eyelashes. “Blessed with impeccable music taste? Awesome at taming demons?”
He smiles. “I was going to say perfect.”
~~~~~~~~~~
You’re three shots deep and belting out Sweet Caroline with the electric-fence kid from Jurassic Park. There’s a sentence you never thought would cross your mind.
Joe’s trim left arm is draped over your shoulders, his head leaning into yours, a lager swooping precariously in his right hand as he gestures with it like a microphone. Ben is looking on, grinning as he sips his Sazerac, his eyes flickering in the dim, rusty light. When you first arrived, Ben introduced you as a friend; Joe had quickly shimmied over and started dropping lines.
“Joe,” Ben flared, like it was a warning. “I’m not trying to set you two up. That’s not what this is.”
“Whoops, my bad,” Joe had replied, and dialed down the saccharine charm. Yet you like Joe, you like him a lot, and within thirty minutes you’ve already exchanged numbers and compared astrological signs and agreed that he’s going to teach you how to play baseball next week.
“She’s got a thing for Jeff Goldblum, you know,” Ben says now.
“Stop!” you cry, blushing furiously.
“Do you?!” Joe asks and gulps half his lager. “I can make that happen. I can introduce you.”
“He’s a lot older than he was in his Jurassic Park days,” you sigh, lamenting.
“But also wayyyyy richer!” Joe pitches, waggling his eyebrows.
“She’s a schoolteacher,” Ben notes. “She could use a sugar daddy.”
“Girl, I am going to hook you up!”
Rami and Lucy return to the circular booth from the dancefloor, their fingers interlaced. Lucy is incredibly delicate, even tinier and more youthful than she appears onscreen, and always smiling; Rami speaks slowly and thoughtfully and with a captivating meticulousness, and when he fixes his pale eyes on yours you feel like you’re the only person in the room, in the city, in the world, as if whatever you have to say is the most profound thing he’s ever heard. Rami shouts something to Ben over the blaring music as Ben takes a pack of cigarettes out of his pocket and lights one.
“Oh my god!” you exclaim, and Joe jumps beside you, startled. “You smoke?”
Ben takes a draw, exhales smoke through full pink lips, and smirks guiltily.
“What year is this?!”
“2019,” Joe offers.
“Who the fuck smokes in 2019?!” you hurl at Ben. “Do you like breathing? Do you enjoy your internal organs? Do you want to live to spend all your BoRhap money?”
“You tell him!” Joe whoops, clapping. “Yeah baby! Tell him, Y/N!”
You ask incredulously: “They let people smoke in here?!”
“They do in the VIP section,” Joe chimes.
“He’s quite the delinquent, isn’t he?” Gwil says, appearing from the dancefloor and resting his hands on Ben’s shoulders. Gwilym is gentlemanly and eruditions, classically handsome, one of those people whose sincerity reads all over their face. His voice is different than Ben’s, lighter, sharper, less husky; he’s tall and slim and polished. In a phrase, he’s outlandishly lovely.
“I didn’t come here for an intervention, mate,” Ben responds, but his tone is pleasant and at-ease.
“Sorry for loving you, Ben!” Joe yells. “Sorry for caring about your longevity!”
“Sorry for wanting to grow old with you and retire together!” Gwil wails theatrically.
“Oh wow wow wow,” Rami says, shaking his head and smiling. Lucy is clutching a Malibu Sunset and trying to drag him back to the dancefloor, her polka dot dress swirling dreamily around her ankles.
“Wait,” Joe begins, “this is awkward, I definitely already purchased adjacent burial plots for me and Ben and the cemetery has a strict no-Welshmen policy, so...”
Laughing, you turn to Ben, and all at once the two of you are alone in this deafening and pulsing space. He takes another draw, the lit end of his cigarette glowing like embers, his eyes—green like envy, like a snake’s skin, like insatiable greed—all over you: your lips, your neck, your chest, lower. Something deep and shapeless ripples through you, déjà vu or recognition or desire or all of that and more; you want to reach out and touch his flushed flawless skin with your fingertips, you want to make sure he’s real. Gwil and Rami and Lucy are engrossed in some conversation about the best neighborhoods for apartment hunting in London, but Joe’s squinting suspiciously at you and Ben through the veil of smoke. You can’t fool him.
“Right,” Ben says suddenly, crushing the rest of his cigarette in an ashtray. “I’ve got to run. Y/N, do you want a lift home?”
This is just for show, just for the low-profile arrangement; of course you want to leave with him. You’ll follow him anywhere. “That’d be greatly appreciated.” As you climb out of the booth, Ben slips his phone from his pocket to call an Uber.
Joe waves, still thoughtful. “See you soon, Sweet Caroline!”
“Oh god, let’s never talk about that again.”
Rami gives you a sophisticated peck on each cheek, Lucy a spirited hug and a delighted little squeal; her oversized dangling earrings drag along your cheek as you pull away. Gwil takes your hands firmly in his own. “It was wonderful to meet you, love,” he says. “Come along anytime.”
“You’ve all been so kind!” you gush tipsily, and that’s the truth; they’ve been almost preposterously welcoming.
“Yeah yeah, you’ve stolen the show,” Ben says affectionately, maybe even proudly, guiding you towards the front of the club with his palm pressed lightly against the small of your back. “Cheers! We’ll do this again soon,” he calls back to the others. Joe and Gwil dramatically blow kisses after him as you push through the crowds and out into the windswept, luminescent Los Angeles night.
“What’s the hurry—?”
“Can I take you home now?” His voice is rushed and breathless; he’s doing that nervous thing he does where he glances around distractedly and bites his lips and shifts his weight from one foot to the other and runs his thumb over his chin.
“Of course,” you answer, your words hushed like clouds muting the moonshine.
A red Porsche rolls up along the sidewalk and Ben opens the door for you.
“I need you to do something for me,” you say when you’re both in the car and zooming through traffic towards the suburbs.
“Anything.”
Your gaze is devouring his high cheekbones—Eli’s, just like Eli’s—as the streetlights pass overhead, his messy hair and barely-there smile and all that lives under his fierce exterior, kindness and strength and wit and love. Love. “I need you to quit smoking.”
He laughs at you; that’s not what he expected. “Seriously?”
“I don’t want you to die young. I don’t want to lose you.” You can’t stand that thought. You’ve known him for three weeks and you’re hooked like a fucking swordfish; he’s in your bones, your blood, your lungs, he’s dragging you up from the depths and into blinding, open air.
This is too soon. This is way too soon. You don’t know this guy at all.
And yet somehow you do, somehow it feels like you always have.
Ben reaches over and weaves his fingers through yours. “I’m not going anywhere.”
He follows you inside when the Uber pulls into your driveway; he’s not speaking, he doesn’t remove his jacket or his shoes. He begins flipping through your box of records as you lean against the kitchen counter, your arms crossed.
“This is a test,” you say with a smile.
Ben makes a selection at last, drops the record onto the turntable, and places the needle. The music begins, filling your tiny one-bedroom house, reverberating off the walls that you’ve painted mint green and lilac and teal and pastel rosy pink. He still isn’t looking at me.
“Interesting choice.” The song is Save Tonight by a Swedish artist called Eagle-Eye Cherry; it’s acoustic and simple and soulful. “That’s not very classic rock of you.”
“Go on and close the curtains
'Cause all we need is candlelight
You and me, and a bottle of wine
To hold you tonight.”
“The Nineties weren’t all bad.” Ben shrugs off his jacket and tosses it on the kitchen table, kicks aside his shoes, lays his phone face-down on the counter as if he’s just decided to stay. Then he comes to you.
“Well we know I'm going away
And how I wish, I wish it weren't so
So take this wine and drink with me
And let's delay our misery.”
There’s no questioning whether you’re going to let him touch you; there’s no question at all. The thought of not being with him is agonizing, cavernous, unbearable. You’ve never wanted someone like this. You’ve never wanted anything like this.
Ben cups your face in his hands and kisses you like he’s coming up for air, like you’re a high he’ll never get enough of. He tastes like cognac and whiskey and cigarettes and lust. Your back hits the refrigerator, and your magnets pop off and clatter against the tile floor; your fingers are knotting through his hair as his trace a path beneath your blouse. He asks if you’re okay—not with his voice but with his searching eyes—and you nod a desperate yes, yes, yes. Outside the stars are raging through the blackness, those same stars that lit up the sky above the dinosaurs just a few blinks of their immortal lifespans ago.
“Save tonight and fight the break of dawn,
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone...”
“Oh shit...” Ben’s patting his pockets, flipping through his wallet. His eyes are wide and frantic. “I don’t have a condom.”
“I’m on the pill,” you tell him. “Wait, I’m sorry, you’re an actor, you probably get psychos trying to have your babies all the time, I totally understand if you don’t trust me—”
“I trust you,” he breathes, as if he’s just realizing it.
“I trust you too, Ben.”
“Don’t say it,” he whispers, almost pleads. “You don’t know me.”
“I do,” you insist, unbuttoning his shirt, lifting all that separates you away, peeling back secrets like layers of the earth.

abrupt ♡ M.T.
Tumblr media
♡ reposted from my wattpad
♡ character: malia tate
♡ word count: 1.2k+
♡ warnings: malia body checks a twelve year old
        (Y/N) doodled on the margins of her notebook with a bored expression, drowning out the teacher's full lecture on the civil war.
        It was just the same information again and again, and the same multiple choice for test at the end of the unit. She didn't need to take notes.
       However, it was apparent that her long-time crush, Malia Tate, did not share her mentality.
      In the desk diagonal from her own, the girl was scribbling down notes like her life depended on it, the graphite pressing down on the paper darkly.
      (Y/N) jumped out of her Malia-induced daze as the girl's pencil snapped, and she let out something that could be compared to a growl.
      (Y/N) smiled to herself, retrieving her extra pencil and leaning forward.
      She delicately tapped the frustrated girl on the shoulder, who turned around, ready to snap at whoever was touching her, but her gaze softened at the sight of (Y/N) holding out a pencil with a bright smile.
      Malia grabbed the pencil from her and turned back around to continue her notes without so much as a smile.
      She blinked at the girl's abrupt response, but let it go, returning her focus to the cactus forming on her page.
      (Y/N) expected that to be the end of it, and to return to being ignored by Malia as she had been all year.
      However, this theory was proven false as Malia followed her out of the classroom when the bell rang, and stayed right by her side the whole way to (Y/N)'s locker.
      "Uh," (Y/N) cleared her throat, an awkward blush dusting her pale cheeks, "you can keep the pencil. I don't mind."
      "I know," Malia spoke simply.
      "Oh," (Y/N) frowned in confusion, but refrained from asking any more questions, "alright."
      Malia stayed silent, observing the girl curiously as she began exchanging her books.
      She stood behind the girl, blocking her from the view of the rest of their peers.
      Once (Y/N) finished at her locker, she was certain Malia would leave her alone, but the taller girl simply proceeded to walk her to her next class in silence.
      "This- this is my class" (Y/N) jerked her thumb in the direction of her A.P. Psych class, confusion still prevalent in her mind.
      Malia simply watched her as she awkwardly backed up into the door, staring at her until she sat in her seat, and then leaving.
      At the end of class, Malia was right by the door, waiting to take her to her next class.
      This pattern continued on for almost a week, and (Y/N) was too afraid to ask her what she was doing, because she really didn't want her to stop.
      Malia was walking the girl to A.P. Bio in complete silence, as was the protocol for the two, when (Y/N) spotted Isaac Lahey from across the hall.
      She beamed at him, the two having been friends since middle school.
      "Hey," he grinned, waving from across the hall.
      He started making his way over to the two girls, but stopped at the sight of Malia glaring at him, the girl's body rigid.
      Isaac furrowed his brows at the girl, but then he took in the way Malia was stood protectively in front of (Y/N), and he smirked in realization.
      He threw his hands up in the air and continued past theme, Malia's glare piercing his back until he was out of sight.
      As soon as he left, she relaxed again, lightly grabbing (Y/N)'s wrist and tugging her forward, continuing their journey to A.P. Bio and leaving a flustered (Y/N) with a confused expression.
      This behavior was odd enough, but (Y/N) knew Malia was eccentric. It was one of the reasons she had fallen for her in the first place.
      The real trouble came three days later, out on the lacrosse field.
      (Y/N) came to the game, as she did every game day to support Isaac, who, by the way, was very unsympathetic to her situation.
      Sure enough, Malia Tate showed up soon after she had settled down on the bleachers, and proceeded to sit very, very close to a flustered (Y/N).
      Still, this didn't seem out of the ordinary, given her odd behavior recently and the fact that she had friends on the team.
      The "incident" didn't occur until after the game was over.
      (Y/N) hopped down the bleachers and went to see Isaac like always, laughing and shoving him away when he tried to hug her before taking a shower.
      Scott, Stiles, and Liam exited the locker room with freshly washed hair and clean clothes, seeing (Y/N) and Malia standing on the other side of the field.
      " (Y/N)!" Liam screeched in a high pitched tone, running towards her with his arms out to give her a hug.
      "Oh dear god," she laughed, but held out her arms in anticipation.
      The hug never came.
      She jumped back in shock as Malia slammed Liam to the ground before he could reach her.
      "What the hell?" she yelled out as Scott and Stiles began bolting across the field to reach them.
      "Sorry, sorry," Stiles rambled as Scott tugged Malia off of Liam, "nothing to see here. Just some playful banter. We'll be going now, have a great night!"
      (Y/N) stood, her mouth agape as she watched the three boys drag a struggling Malia off the field and away to the parking lot.
      It could have just been her mind going crazy in the chaos, but she could have sworn the girl's eyes were glowing.
      "Okay," (Y/N) plopped down in a seat at the picnic table with a huff, "what is wrong with Malia?"
      Malia's group of friends - Scott, Stiles, Liam, Mason, Allison, Kira, and Lydia  froze at her words, looking at her with wide eyes.
      "What? Nothing's wrong with Malia," Stiles began to ramble from the seat beside her, "She's fine. Why are you asking? What's wrong with you? I mean-,"
      The spastic, flannel clad boy was cut off by Malia shoving him off the bench and taking his seat next to (Y/N).
      "Ah- ow," Stiles began to groan dramatically, "oh god."
      Scott jumped out of his seat to help his friend up, and Lydia rolled her eyes in exasperation.
      "Why do you always do that?" (Y/N) demanded.
      "Do what?" Malia frowned, digging into her mac & cheese.
      "Aggressively keep me away from other people," (Y/N) elaborated.
      "Oh," Malia shrugged, "I'm protecting you from other possible mates."
      "Oh god," Lydia groaned, pinching the bridge of her nose.
      "Other mates," Malia said, "oh, right, Stiles said you called it girlfriends and boyfriends."
      "What the hell are you- what?" (Y/N)'s face was distraught.
      "What?" Malia wrinkled her nose, as though she were asking a ridiculous question, "You gave me a pencil, I accepted, and now we're dating. I have to protect you, that's how this works."
      "Malia, no," Allison spoke softly, "you can't just tell people that you're dating them. You have to ask-,"
      "I'm okay with it," (Y/N) cut her off quickly.
      "What?" Stiles blinked in confusion, having fully recovered from his fall.
      "She said she's okay with it," Malia rolled her eyes, "how are you all not getting this? Honestly, and you say I'm the clueless one."

[11:12] I am in my twenty years i have been and when i wake two am bunny because it hurt so that. Replace that i was emergency room. And this pregnancy has it was live with me i heard on their contact the. I need after your mom in the morning it is morning on it every time my now ex husband was military so i had a few days after first. Alright we now go to your closet in the year date of my neck you can you give me ideas and birth control. I'm. And before and after that can we were home for ninety days and in my general doctor let them in for a great year. And you can not giving dr in the parking lot. And the wonderful colonel back is he wanted to remove my left ovary because it looks. In that time are you had for diagnostic measures was a physical path did they do an ultrasound profit from. [12:43] And i can't be diagnosed from just no sound no no i'm. Something to think hannah and i don't know how that's possible because i see pictures i have my pictures i think it is on line you know i do my research i follow up on that it was a black shirt. Late there is no way you can see the on off around. And always i pictures because the camera and have been and will be removing some scar tissue. [13:22] And the water looks like black shirt is leaking pee office on. [13:30] So dr wanted you take one of your ovaries and your in your mid twenties and have a child yet no. [13:38] I'm in a client that. What could be allowed to when civilians go to the medical doctor and they say i have to have it back nothing in before doing anything like that. Room in back is unity do not present i was a civilian they had to help pay to this terrible terrible man. No my daughters middle name is his last name and not have to pay and. I mean just wanted to set up for one year old girl with the bacterium so he's on it i grandpa. Of course she had in mind that it's a push heating were here shut up and take something and that. Is it a lot but it just made me cry just through there is nothing wrong and that's when i found. [14:41] And after that. Regardless of the physical pain that you had to go through what. What was it like in motion to get an idea like that with where you relieved because finally happening answer where you. Here are all. Back then it was shot but i got one from on high thank god for health care for the military because one shot was five hundred dollar. [16:05] And now something in the that occurred to me is that. Even the diagnostic experience if you had not been ensure heard was you gone to the doctor at all or if your insurance is not covered the. Things would you have gone at all because again women are supposed to have a period. Right exactly no absolutely not i mean is insurance for the kind of insurance or the ability to pay that much for coming on so they can tell me what's wrong and i can't fix it. Rain at our lady mean in the year period. Yeah it's me again and the little girl i'm so if you don't have insurance or the right insurance or the insurance absolutely i'm. Personally i do know that right here in washington state medical will cover after the and it says your. Surgery is out. I have a friend to how to had insurance and he was capable of being on the diagnostic so you know there are ways around it but i highly doubt it up for five hundred. Right i'm so i didn't run which was in a coma. [17:37] Which was how i thought my god i hope it doesn't happen again. [17:46] What time is good for the baby is come along way i do research for luke bryan i found out that it could be used as a chemical castration. Your man and dramatic that it is it is how long will. Absolutely it's not pretty hard is not for me that is it is heavy duty. And anybody how you did anybody give you any insight into how that could be before you get. Now not reading any information that you are happy and then say that you know i forget where the numbers were back then dies it work and i was like seventy percent of running. React well to run the fact that they don't have pain after a on and i was enrolled to the fact that and put them in canada enterprise, i made my body hurt after it has been shot, yeah yes i hate when the wind last for the rest of your life because i know you said is expected and i'm on treatment. And the two worst one now here in the winter when being in ninety eight with a fan on me. I didn't ask you for anything and it is so bad. Lower the running the tried and and what is the matter talking about your risk of infertility and. And i really want you have to take the test for you unable to conceive. Right i'm not really happy that any of that eventually they did say hey there are you in three days i can't incorrectly but it was hysterectomy. [20:57] Not at the radiator twenty seven. Right on dr pushed in place in history hysterectomy and you have to understand around and like now i refuse to not willing to. And so i you know justin account now so we're talking universal control. Because your friend. And then you know just how it is ibuprofen and tylenol whatever the case maybe i can hear the pain and then just suck it up buttercup. [21:42] How old are you when you did finally become president. Three i lower the longer a woman. [21:55] I don't wanna wait to the twenty seventh baby whenever they want but but there are different as you get older determine your own house arrest the so you had. What the what would happen to the and when you finally do become pregnant. What happened to carry her nolen and i was lucky i'm coming having the entire page is entertaining lol a. And the lucky i have the entire time i was pregnant and how about tells you about nine months old so i had but he month being pain free and it was marvelous. [22:40] Can you have dan dealing with. What year you work twenty days of paying per month for fifteen years at that point right. Hello after that and started to return and read her. Looking back with a vengeance if you like test at me because i got pregnant i only plane. It didn't gradual thing it came back on for one apple on like. Yeah like that yeah it worse before it was hard function. [23:29] And that's how you came to making the decision you made in the last couple years because it was just the pain anymore it with your quality of life, right now i have this the little girl that i have to i mean on the that have helped but the little girl that is the amount of roasted garlic r and you feel trapped and you clean and. Not be why are canadians had enough time right. [24:00] And you did to go for the full hysterectomy yet ready for gym forty. That is what can and at that time they decided that. [24:16] I need a container one more time but it didn't hold because of course means i'm at that point i was thirty seven. Turn it on it hold on we decided that probably having another one wasn't really feasible low on a high breast cancer so for. United we go ahead and how do you correct me to come to improve my quality of life and. [24:52] Garrett very misconception of public bed and hysterectomy is the cure for endo that not go. [25:03] We are not all the hair did you can be totally separate from the years and bread and other parts of body. What are the speeding ticket away evening still be there. Absolutely girl who we chose to remove everything ovaries uterus and cervix. I am a manager not to do so hormone replacement therapy because now in the in the into surgical menopause. Are there any that was not to do the hormone replacement because we want to be be in jail. Because that's exactly what you're doing on your hormones back in and tightly removing everything from the farmers burn that. I'm so it didn't. I mean for me i live in relatively it but if it's not attached to the nearest but cannot attach to. The back side of your bladder am to hear. Can you please turn on backend know that he is working with the police on an employer out at the hormones back in. [26:24] Thirteen that we had a hidden monster. I wanna be taking a vacation that the source away. And there can still be some hidden somewhere navy inadvertently for the growth of it again. Yeah and it still grow in your uniform on and you don't even have to do hormone replacement if you are month i'm out our beef are chicken at four hundred one than. Why why one and when and how it is because our society comes from on an two or three. [27:10] And you tried to go up. Is the surgery the side. Knowing that be you potentially still could have and o-o living in your body you were diagnosed with secondary pain condition. Yeah i'm looking to buy them out and. [27:41] Probably with dealing with that and didn't realize it in addition to the end of the end or very overwhelming. I'm doing so how did you handle. [27:58] How do you handle being told oh by the way here's hoping to be in pain for the rest of your life. “Don't live life as an artist, live life through the eyes of an artist. Even if your purpose in life is to be an artist/creative/visual story teller, life doesn't always call for paint or pen.”

What triggered your initial interest to make art?
I was around 6 or so when I showed my initial interest in art - it would be heavily inspired and fueled by my grandmother, Kaye. Or Neenaw as we called her. She was involved with Art Therapy at a rehabilitation center in Lexington, Kentucky. There is a small doodle I did at this time while visiting her, its my first still life done on a pharmaceutical company post it note. A boot-shaped looking vase with a couple sad flowers in bic pen. From then on, I was doodling in the margins of dog-earred notebooks, from kindergarten with Inspector Gadget/Get Smart-esque spies to middle school textbooks.
I don't remember a time I was not doodling or ideating on anything I could get my hands on. I was a fan of coloring books when I was much younger, but I just wanted to create my own cool things. A lot more so to escape a troubled and tumultuous childhood. Small Rural towns don't provide a lot of artistic inspiration, I looked to comic books for both inspiration and escape.  I had this one issue of Amazing Spiderman circa 1997 that I copied the pages from over and over again, getting caught dozens of times by this hellish Social Studies teacher.
Yet, again my fated location didn't provide opportunities for great art supplies either. Using what i could - typically an art box kit my mom bought from the Sears Catalogue or an assortment of Crayola Markers/Crayons. Not getting a hold of a paint brush till I was twelve. Neenaw had set me up with oil painting lessons with an old, country-lady version of Bob Ross named Edith King.
From then on I attended a magnet program for the arts in High School - which afterward it was non-stop art, sketching, doodling, painting, creating.
What have been some of your main sources of inspiration?
My grandmother played a major role. Not just in the facilitation and access to the arts - but in a love of color and making your own thing. She always added a bit of her own personal flare or touch to everything she owned: clothes, furniture, home and so forth. Creativity was something you lived not just did.
Of course, my favorite teachers - with few exceptions - were my art teachers. I had some amazing, and patient, professors while attending Northern Kentucky University (NKU). At that time, I was very interested in graffiti artists - mainly mural and poster work. I was in college during the early days of GIANT by OBEY/Shepard Fairey and Banksy, but it was Sam Flores out of San Francisco who got me going - he plays with a lot of confluence between humans and animals, touches of his Asian-American roots aesthetic.
Overall my love of comic books and graphic novels opened up the desire to be a comic book artist in my own right. I was a fan of mainstream names for sure - but it was the one-off Superman/Batman stories that grabbed my eye, those with unique artist/writer mashups. Frank Quitely & Grant Morrison for one - their work on All-Star Superman and New X-men was phenomenal. It was the art of David Mack in Kabuki and Daredevil (also an NKU Alum) that got me on the style of work I aspired to make - watercolors, ink washes, and just a free style of art. It was because of him I wished to attend NKU itself. More recently, finding Rafael Grampa as a newer artist I am inspired by. (Frank Miller's DK is a must)
My travels to the Middle East and connection to Judaism has played a role in my work. Religious imagery and subjects; and an eye for the architecture. There is a lot of color palette, iconography, and lighting being used in all kinds of interesting ways in religion. I have fun combining it with surreal subjects to add this holy aspect of the scene.
My other Artist inspirations: Winsor McCay, Geoff Darrow J.M.W. Turner, William Stanley Haseltine.
Lastly, music - I grew up with an 80's mom who loved Fleetwood Mac, Prince, Robert Palmer, and Madonna - with a grunge rock brother to follow.  I feed off a lot of visually strong artists these days - Arcade Fire - Queens of the Stoneage, The Decemberists, TV on the Radio.
What’s your purpose as an artist?
I always baffled my art teachers when I would explain that my art was just for fun. It was difficult for me to express my feelings through art that read well to others. Art's purpose for me was an escape, something that doesn't exist, a new idea or place. Away from life.
The want to tell a narrative stems from the dream to be a comic book artist, but I want my viewers to come up with their own narratives. I want it to be a snapshot of a moment or from another world that has different stories to tell. Much of my art is derived from an idea I had about a comic book series that went from conceptual character to a series of mutated vegetation.
Art is definitely therapy or a healthy distraction for me. I wear my emotions on my sleeve, painting it down helps properly express myself. Diverting that energy into something I control, followed by a sense of accomplishment. There is nothing like having a finished piece(s) having been made during a time of turmoil or emotional distress. I am one who thrives in chaos and under pressure. It took my mind of my deployment to Afghanistan, a small sketchbook and plethora of sharpies.
What would you recommend to other artists that seek for inspiration?
Don't live life as an artist, live life through the eyes of an artist. Even if your purpose in life is to be an artist/creative/visual story teller, life doesn't always call for paint or pen. You have to be in the moment in-order to enjoy it; that enables you to take the full experience and translate it on paper/canvas with that much more vigor.  But always bring something to take notes with - I have mountains of notebooks from my military days that I jotted all my ideas for work and comics, it kept my creative side engaged while I did my job at the same time.
For me - the experiences I had where I couldn't be knee deep in art are what defined me as a person, later deriving what I learned from those experiences to my art. From the Army I understood that if you want to succeed you have to lay those pounds of flesh down - special forces guys are good because they dedicate their lives to being proficient with their craft. If you want to be a big bad artist, you have to start somewhere, from one sketch a day to one sketch an hour. No one starts out as good artists, even those with natural talent, only that can carry them so far.
Curating your Instagram is a good way to have a non-stop flow of inspiration. Follow new and up-coming artists to see what the trends are. Follow artists who do the kind of art you wish you could, they share techniques and advice. Follow other visually strong people, not just the popular people. Don't follow artists who have more photos of them "thinking of the next big piece" or have huge numbers of followers with very little work to show.
If you are nervous about a new medium but dying to dry it out, do an experimental phase with it. Grab your favorite CMY relative hues, just the basic colors Blue Red Yellow even, plus a black of the same medium. This is a low cost investment. Use the colors in the new medium to create small pieces in your style and usual subjects. Experiment with techniques, tricks, and process. If you like the results or feel the potential - then grab a few more basic colors. The scary thing about new mediums is that artists feel like we have to take a header into full kits - when just the basics are good enough.
Embrace your fear of all things in the creative world - for those who are afraid of using colors there are those afraid to use black in their work. For those who are afraid of putting their work in shows there are those who are afraid of going bigger with their work. We learn more from our mistakes than our successes, if art was so easy of a win - every five-year old kid that parents say could do a Jackson Pollack would be rolling in Instagram fame.
