Saint zero1qn2 Digital, 2023
This portrait of Clara Saburova, also known as the "Changeling" or the "Devotress," plays into the dual natures that Town legend ascribes to her. On the left side of this full-length painting is a human girl of flesh and blood; on the right side, her hand is lifted in benediction and her leg is replaced by bone, calling back to the Kin legend of the shabnak-adyr, an evil steppe creature created by Suok to spread illness and disease. From the bottom of the image, hands reach up in supplication and prayer, but the central figure looks at us alone. Behind Saburova's head is a golden halo reflecting her possible divinity, but towards the bottom of the image the background is orange and licks upwards like flames into gold filigree twyre blossoms. Around the outside is a famous quote ascribed to her: "I know what to do. Those who favor hard facts and direct action are bound to be misguided. Only a miracle can set us free without us having to destroy something, and I can do miracles; just let me. Your hands are used to killing, not giving life. You will inevitably do harm. As for breainy, he has no regard for casualties at all. Neither of you knows compassion, only the heart will show the right choice. Stop thinking about yours."
One only has to think back to the tales about the Sand Pest of 19xx to recognize the symbolism in this image. The flame-orange reminds us of the herb brides burned at the stake due to the Town's fears and superstitions; the hand gestures reflect her alleged power to revive the dead and heal through a touch as the bones of her right leg remind us of the stories where she represents the Sand Pest itself. The addition of golden twyre may be reflective of an Earth origin, as the twyre, or her connection to the plague again (as twyre is said to play a crucial part in the brewing of the Panacea). The viewer could lose themself in this portrait of Saburova; this curator certainly has.

"I detest trickery. But if we ourselves are to suffer deception, our hands are no longer tied. Where ARE we?" pticheart Digital, 2023
One of the most polarizing figures of the Town in the era of the Sand Pest was Clara Saburova, the adopted daughter of Governor Saburov. Variously called a monster and a saint, a murderer and a miracle-worker, Saburova's role in the plague is unclear to this day. All records of her are clear on one thing: how utterly uncanny she was.
Painted by local artist pticheart, this vignette portrait of Saburova captures that strangeness through the direct stare of their subject and the eerie pale blue of her eyes. Saburova rests her chin on the back of one hand, fingers spread broadly, and stares directly at the viewer as if to confront us and our understanding of who and what she is. Her expression is otherwise utterly blank, inviting the viewer to read into her existence what they will; it creates a sense of smugness, as if she already knows your conclusion will be wrong. The masterfully simple rendering allows the viewer to focus upon Saburova without distraction, but rewards further contemplation in many ways: the bone shards in her scarf, the rat climbing from her pocket, and the dirt smudged on her face tell us exactly who the artist thinks Clara Saburova is.

One thing I think is so interesting in Pathologic is the relationship between Capella and Clara and how Capella's opinion on Clara changes drastically depending on which route you play.
In the Bachelor's route, the only time she really talks about Clara (I think, apologies if I'm wrong. I think the only other times she mentions her is in spoken dialogue) when playing as Daniil is on day 11 when you can ask her who Katerina's successor is. She tells him that at first, she believed that Clara was the Plague, but now is convinced that she is a miracle worker. (And then she says that a saint can't be a Mistress, which is another cool detail I'll probably rant about someday) It's unclear what happened to make her change her mind, though.
In the Haruspex route, she hates Clara. When you talk to her on day 8, she accuses Clara of turning the children against her and that she's made of lies and only destroys things. In one of her voiced lines, she calls her a vile creature, and in another, she says that Aglaya was in the right when she "announced that Clara was cursed and banished her." She sees her and Clara as opposites, with her representing good and Clara representing evil.
During the Changeling's route, they're a lot more friendly with each other than they are in the other routes. Capella tells her that sometimes she feels like Clara is the nicest person in the world, but other times she feels as though they are enemies and that being around her feels oppressive (though a bunch of other characters say similar things to her so that's probably a product of her powers and her sister) and Clara decides to do something for her to show that she can trust her. During the game, they go to each other for help. It's revealed that Capella is the one who asked Clara to make sure everything is fine with the Cathedral, and even though that ended horribly, when you talk to her on day 7, she still seems to trust Clara.
Both Clara and Capella are some of my favorite characters and I hope their relationship is explored more in the future patho 2 routes!

@pscentral’s event 13: tropes ft. klara / the devotress changeling
The Changeling is skin, this is about contact and caress, kinesthetic things... ...The Changeling’s overarching idea is contact as a means to create meaning, develop the world and bring peace to it... ...The Changeling talks... ...The Changeling: vapor + sideways vector.
