peter having terrible nightmares after the devil and peter tork and it starts with mike climbing into bed with him late at night because he’d wake up to peter screaming and crying and then eventually all of the monkees just sleep in the same bed for a while so peter knows he’s safe

Behind the scenes during the Monkees episode “The Devil and Peter Tork.” Photos 1-6 by Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images.
The episode first aired on February 5, 1968.
“The wonderful story attached to that [ song ‘Salesman’] has to do with ‘The Devil and Peter Tork.’ That song was [featured in the episode], and NBC said ‘We’re not putting that song out.’ We said, ‘How come?’ They said, ‘Because Salesman’s got drug references in it.’ In fact, it sort of does, but not directly, and it’s not approving it by any stretch of the imagination. What it really says it: Salesmen are so sleazy, they’ll sell anything. [That’s] the basic thrust of that song.” - Peter Tork, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones Ltd. 2007 liner notes
“Bert Schneider was convinced that the reason that they didn’t want that episode out was that we were challenging the notion that you can’t say ‘hell’ on television. Bert felt that they didn’t want to put the show on because they were pissed off directly and personally at having their idea of what’s right and wrong challenged. They said it was centered on ‘Salesman,’ but he thought it was a red herring.” - Peter Tork, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. 1995 CD liner notes
“In The Devil And Peter Tork.’ a second-season Monkees episode directed by James Frawley, Nesmith provides the band’s summation. [...] ‘I say that contract is null and void because in fact, Mr. Zero, you didn’t give Peter anything in return for his soul… Peter didn’t want fame and fortune, all Peter wanted was just his music. You didn’t give him the ability to play the harp. He loved the music that came from the harp. The power of that love was inside him from the first, and you didn’t have anything to do with it at all. Don’t you understand what that means when you have that inside you, what comes out? If you love music, man, you can play music. People say, “Well, I can’t carry a note, I can’t sing, I’m tone deaf.” But nobody’s tone deaf. All it takes it just love, because in the final analysis, love is power. That’s where the power’s at. And you want to tell me that you have it to him, but I know different, cause I’m a musician. And that’s really all there is to that.’ Groovy.” - Mitchell Cohen, May 1986; Then & Now… The Best Of The Monkees liner notes

Davy, plotting: that stephen stills is a bad apple upon this earth because he is stealing the attention of my romantic love interest which is peter tork despite me happening to be heterosexual
Peter: I wish Davy was gay so we i could get him boypregnant but he isn’t so ill be polyamorous
Stephen Stills: I wishneil would choke me to death
Neil Young: I’ve been really into trains lately
Mike Nesmith: these roles of masculinity cast upon me are causing me incredible stress, discomfort, and feelings of being trapped, but idrc about that right now because I’m too busy cheating on my wife and having a homoerotic love-hate relationship with Peter Tork
Graham Nash: I’m pregnant and I don’t know if it’s Joni’s or David’s 😰
Stephen Stills, wearing a devil costume: get an Abortion the pregnancy will never last till term
Neil Young, wearing an angel costume: no, get a c section for your slight frame, you are the next Virgin Mary and this is immaculate conception
Micky Dolenz: anyone up for fucking dolenz style 😏

oh my god i have so many WEIRD self-projection tv show monkees headcanons that I feel like i’d get yelled at for having but like, it’s all about stuff that I’ve done or literally do and cannot help. sometimes i want to share them and then freak out about backlash but i feel like any backlash would just be from ableist people.
#the monkees#okay it’s not like THAT weird#like for example: peter struggles with bedwetting. like that’s not that bad i guess but people might be like NO NOT MY CHARACTER—and that’s#fine that’s fine. that’s just my little headcanon thing because i’ve had issues with that all my life and i see similarities in myself in#the character of peter#stress and autism combined does not bode well for brain being able to focus on keeping piss inside body while sleeping#especially when you have bad nightmares#which i think peter sometimes gets. maybe after the devil and peter tork#i’ve just been thinking about these kind of headcanons because i’ve been going through it recently lol#like all the crazy stuff#and the monkees help they really do. it’s a weird comfort from my childhood to put all of my struggles onto mike or peter or davy#(i did not like micky as a kid and now i feel bad! i love micky now!! shut up idiot child!!! he’s wonderful!!!!)

“The story began several months ago when one of Peter’s fans, Candace (Candy) Vaughn, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, was feeling a little lonely and depressed one Monday night. Candy finished her homework, and then went downstairs to watch the Monkees on TV. While she was watching the show, it struck her that Peter Tork, far from being just a crazy, devil-may-care clown, actually was hiding a side of his personality that the television audience had never seen. On the chance that her intuition was right, Candy went upstairs after the show and sat down and wrote a letter to Peter. […] [She wrote] ‘You seem to be leading a very happy carefree life; how can I attain such a feeling for living? […] The topic I designated [for my freshman term paper] was, “The Origination and Reason for Medieval Chivalry.” Foolishly I selected this period not realizing it would lead to such pain. This period of time is the sole weakness of my life. Outside of regretting my feminine fragility, accepted unwillingly, I yearn to be living and serving in the times of the Dark Ages as a knight or noble. My family insists it is an extraordinary phenomenon and sincerely believes I am always pretending to be preoccupied and thoroughly engulfed with books, fencing lessons, and old movies. If this is but a state which will soon end, why has it not ended, upon many realizations of today’s modern times?’ Candy sent this letter and went ahead living her life as best she could. She realized Peter is swamped with mail, but she firmly believed he would see the letter some day, and that it might have some meaning for him. Much to everyone’s surprise (except Candy’s), two weeks later a card arrived in the Vaughn mailbox. It was from Peter Tork, and I’m printing it exactly as it was written in Peter’s own handwriting […]. Just read the words of wisdom Peter has written to Candy, and you’ll see that special side of him which nobody ever sees on television and very few people actually know. I want to thank Candy for sharing this important event with us. It gives a warm glow to your heart when you realize people like Peter have a head on their shoulders and are really and truly serious about the world all of us live in.”
Peter’s postcard reads: “Candy: Feeling for living comes with doing it. My inspiration comes from knowing that all is One and that God is Love — literally. That is, God is the sum total of benevolent intelligence on Earth. The Origin and reasons for Chivalry — in this age or any other is the double standard, it’s passé, and definitely maladjusted. I love all people equally and no one gets more favors than anyone else. Love thy neighbor. — Peter Tork” - Fifteen Magazine 1967 Winter Special
