I love ur posts on lolita the book- what are ur thoughts on the movies?

(Made a few edits because my perspective changed a little)

I don't really like the movies- in fact comparing them to the masterpiece that Vladimir Nabokov wrote feels like an insult. Sometimes art can only exist in a certain medium and when you take it out of that medium it loses its integrity. Lolita is art that can only exist as literature. This is what I used to believe but to be honest even as literature it's being misunderstood a lot so it feels as if no matter what medium lolita exists in, it'll always be interpreted wrong.

It took Vladimir Nabokov 5 years to write lolita because writing from the perspective of a pedophile is tough- it's using the abuser to tell the victim's story but in this case the abuser is our unreliable narrator, he had to make Humbert Humbert charming or at least intriguing in a fucked up way enough that the reader would be compelled to read further (lolita will disturb you but you won't able to put it down) but any competent reader would will be able to figure out that Humbert Humbert is just spewing his delusional bullshit.

It feels as if Vladimir Nabokov predicted the romanticization of Lolita as soon as we started putting girls on the book covers- he intended on lolita being faceless

So much of what makes the book incredible lies in reading in between the lines to figure out what's actual going on. Think of it as Humbert Humbert is forcing his heart shaped rose coloured glasses onto you like "see it's a beautiful tragic love story" and it's your responsibility to take them off to see things as they are, a 12 year old child being abused constantly.

Unreliable narrators in general are hard to portray on screen (it's not impossible ofcourse, gone girl, 500 days of summer and black swan do it really well) but extra difficult in this case because lolita and Dolores are 2 different people entirely. Lolita is the persona, Dolores is the person. Lolita is the nymphet, the seductress that only exists in Humbert's twisted mind, Dolores is the 12 year old child. Humbert sees lolita, he wants you to see lolita, but you need to focus on Dolores.

Lolita 1962 was laughably inaccurate, they made Dolores look like an elegant woman when even Humbert Humbert describes her as a messy tomboy. Lolita 1997 is better I guess, it follows the book a little more accurately. The movie is definitely pretty to look at and I don't have a problem with Dolores being an icon or people taking fashion inspiration from her. In my opinion she is an icon, it isn't fair to reduce a victim's identity to their trauma and abuser. Also she's so funny and is constantly insulting Humbert so mwah love her so much plus I relate to her a lot as I went through similar things. I think some scenes of Humbert Humbert being an unreliable narrator were translated really well, for example this argument-

Humbert gave a short description while the movie is more of lo's point of view, it's all screaming and shouting and absolutely devastating, Dominique Swain did an amazing job.

Both of the actresses were 14 during filming and that's just so unsettling to me. Sure you're using a body double for explicit scenes but isn't that just content for actual pedophiles, the closest thing to CP that's legal?. There are many older actresses that look younger but honestly that scares me more, because now there are no restrictions to the scenes they can film, which usually ends up underage characters in extremely exploitative scenes (think euphoria).

My feelings are sort of all over the place on this, I simply can't reach a satisfying conclusion- I don't think it's impossible to adapt lolita into a good film, black swan is one of my favourite movies ever and nina sayers is as unrealiable as a narrator gets, so it's not impossible to portray Humbert Humbert on screen but it will be difficult. On the other hand I just know that people will find some way to romanticize the movie- no matter how well it's written like in the novel it's so obvious Humbert is a pedophile that he might as well get it tattoed on his head but people still think of it as "aw tragic beautiful love story". But part of me thinks that if they write it kind of like gone girl, you believe nick is the murderer in the first half then amy's scheming is revealed in the second, just like that if lolita is shown in the first half but after dolores runs away her perspective is shown to audience, how she's so miserable and gives an accurate depiction of Humbert Humbert's abuse, maybe showing that horrifying reality of the story will end it's romanticization once and for all.

Anyway fun fact about me: when I was in primary 3 (I think) I entered a city wide contest of school kids to design an image that would go onto a tile at a local museum that was being refurbished at the time. I drew the most atrocious T rex and coloured it with the worst felt tip pens and of all the entries in my school that won and it's still there to this day.

Guess who just went to go see Saw (2004) in cinemas with her boyfriend ( @orangejuicetastesgood) for its 20th year anniversary and was absolutely blindsided by the twist ™ (John jigsaw being laid on the bathroom floor the entire time) (I had no fucking clue)

On a serious note-

Cinematography, beautiful! The transitions between shots, the colours, the use of lighting and shadow! Mwah

THE ACTING! Lawrence and Adam were by far my favourite (maybe not shocking considering we spent most of the film with them), seeing their relationship develop was awesome. While I’m on the topic of the saw (2004) bathroom! The fact that most of the film is in one location I found to be really cool- you get so used to that room that leaving it for any length of time just feels- odd- there’s an odd comfort in its shitty blue ish white lights.

ONE MORE THING! It felt like an indie project, I mean that as the highest of praise! It felt like it was made by a small team of teenagers eager to tell a story, it didn’t feel commercial! It felt authentic! (I’m hoping the other films keep this trend)

Uhhh- a negative!?

I wasn’t a massive fan of how many jump cuts there were showing the traps, I’m the kinda autistic to love seeing all the little details and not getting too made me a teeny bit grumpy

I also worry slightly that as the films get bigger and bigger scope wise that John/ jigsaw becomes less of his own interesting character and just an idea, if that makes sense? (Been reassured by the bf that doesn’t happen)

I LOVE PHOTOGRAPHY! Especially analog/film photography. There’s just something so damn captivating about it I struggle to put it in words properly. I’ve played a good amount but Ive never been athletic ever but I wished so badly I was growing up. I played soccer, softball, gymnastics, dance and in high school I had a short roller derby career and rugby but I got badly injured and couldn’t play again

Codes & puzzles & puzzle games. I'm counting them as one thing. I've never met a puzzle I didn't like!

Fiction! Reading generally but fiction specifically. My earliest memories involve me reading storybooks. Fiction has always been there for me as a source of joy, to sate my curiosity, to spark my wonder, or to simply escape into. & even when it's not physically available, all it takes is a little imagination to conjure it! Truly the best example of ephemeralisation — that is, the ability to do more & more with less & less until u can do everything with nothing

Delight! An almost virile lust for life! One of my friends once said of me that I have the most joie de vivre of anyone she knows <3 I've gone, as has everyone, through some truly depressing shit of a morning & caught myself smiling at clouds by the afternoon. & this quotation from Much Ado About Nothing:

Indiana Jones!*!*!*! Frankly the whole series but if I HAVE to choose just one, I guess I'd go with Raiders of the Lost Ark bc Marion <3 I am down at all times to watch this film. I can quote far too much of it. I can pick it out from another room by 2 notes of anywhere in the soundtrack. I'm flirting w my future partner while they're injured by yelling "Well, god damn it, where doesn't it hurt?!" & when I inevitably shrug off this mortal coil, I want "everyone's sorry for something" carved into my headstone. When people ask me what my favourite film is, all 2:30 minutes of The Raiders March plays through my head at Mach 1 before I re-enter the physical world & answer with something vaguely intellectual & probably false bc I am, at my core, fuelled by the 2 irrefutable truths that period adventure films kick ass & that Harrison Ford is hot. That's it. That's the analysis.

Porco Rosso! The only film that's ever understood my thing w the sky & flying & the colour blue 💙🩵🤍 & weird-looking middle-aged men who think they're unworthy of love & refuse to cut themselves a break & spend the whole story engaging w the world via an interface

Knives Out~! Some of the tightest funnest filmmaking I've ever seen ❤️ Plus it's a detective story! With a working-class female protagonist! & Daniel Craig doing an accent! Win after win

Not to be basic but like...the electromagnetic spectrum my beloved 😭💘 Seeing! Getting to see things! The way flowers look in the sunlight. Clouds reflected in a puddle so still it looks like u could fall right through it. Feeling the warmth of the Sun on my back & pulling my top tighter to me to feel it all the more. Rainbows. Golden hour. &, of course, the many faces of the sky :)

It's quiet & relaxing ^_^ No-one expects me to do stuff, so ironically that's when I do the most stuff I like. On rarer occasions, getting to use my telescope to catch celestial events! 🌕🔭 & also the fact that that's when ur online, ma mie!! 💜

21. are you a spiritual person?

Not especially! I'm far too scientific & in love w evidence & fact to be rlly spiritual. I do like hearing stories of supernatural phenomena, regardless of whether or not I believe. I find astrology fun too, more so as a tool for archetypal analysis than as a personality test or a form of divination. & I often make mention to feeling possessed or past lives or similar bc damn it sometimes that's just precisely how it feels, even if it's not the fact of the thing! But I usually just tell people I have the head of an artist & the heart of a scientist & leave it at that. I'm much more interested in observable phenomena! I save my "what if"s for spec fic ^_^
