Julia Parnell and Martin Phillipps on ‘The Chills’
“It’s a story about Martin taking a big look at his life after a dire medical diagnosis that forced some real change… when I walked into his life I was dropped into a place where he had a Doctor’s appointment and told that he could die in six to eight months” – Julia
“It wasn’t always easy… there was nothing that quite prepared me for what we uncovered in terms of my own past, in terms of relations with previous band members who are still hurting after all this time. It’s been a lot of opening of old wounds to some extent but also a lot of healing; it’s been a long process but I’m really, really pleased with the outcome” – Martin
Director Julia Parnell and Chills front-man Martin Phillipps on The Chills: The Triumph and Tragedy of Martin Phillipps’ Australian Premiere at the Sydney Film Festival

band ask: the chills!!
ahh great choice !!
am i a fan? absolutely
first song i heard by them? pretty sure it was pink frost, it must've come up on my spotify radio at some point
favourite song? not to be basic but pink frost is my favourite song of all time as is. but some of my other fave chills songs are don't be - memory, dan destiny and the silver dawn, rolling moon, wet blanket, familiarity breeds contempt, & the male monster from the id
favourite album? submarine bells (1990) is a masterpiece change my mind
favourite music video? probably kaleidoscope world?? it's just martin phillipps being cute for 3 and a half minutes but that's sort of the premise of all of their mvs in the 80s lol. i like the mv for i love my leather jacket too bc you can see the band goofing around london a little bit
have any merch? i have repressings of kaleidoscope world and submarine bells on vinyl, a second hand copy of i love my leather jacket, and i have the chills: the triumph and tragedy of martin phillipps on dvd
seen them live? no :(( i was literally supposed to see them in january this year but it got cancelled and i am salty about it !!!!
favourite member? martin, obviously, since he's the only consistent member lmao. but he is genuinely one of my favourite figures in the dunedin sound scene - i love that absolute nerd so much
send me a band!

The Chills: The Triumph & Tragedy of Martin Phillipps (DVD)
When I first was introduced to the music of New Zealand’s Chills, in late 1987, they were the kind of band I was looking for. Really, they came at a perfect time in my life. As a kid who had been a big punk and hardcore fan (but who loved the Beach Boys as a kid) it all made sense to me and I became a huge fan. Leader Martin Phillipps songs were just so good (they still are), taking me to imaginary places I had never been before. Just pure magic. This 90-minute documentary brings us back to the beginnings of the band when even most of Phillipps counterparts in the NZ music scene could tell he had a special gift for songwriting. It’s hard to describe, but the band’s sound has a certain otherworldyness to it (as does the magic of the city of Dunedin, where he’s from, with its cold crashing waves, which is shown throughout the documentary). The beginning of the documentary focuses on Phillipps’ quirks, collecting a huge amount of toys, among others while the story goes through most of the incarnations of the band (up to Chills #21 now with Phillipps being the only constant). It seems after the 1992 album, Soft Bomb, that Phillipps had reached a breaking point and went downhill into a world of drugs and alcohol. A few attempted comebacks didn’t quite stick and then we learn Phillipps was given a death sentence with having Hepatitis C. Through some remedies Phillipps began feeling better and this saw the return of the Chills in 2015 with the terrific Silver Bullets album (and then continuing with the almost-as-good Snow Bound in 2018). Filmmakers Julia Parnell and Rob Curry have done a wonderful job here with Phillipps giving them a window, so to speak, into his home and life. Through the film we hear several former members talk of feeling not wanted or not needed. Bassist Justin Harwood, in the band in the late 80’s/early 90’s, wondered whether he was “expendable” (he then went on to join Luna after his stint in the Chills). By the end though, you want to cheer for Phillipps (and hug him, too) who is shown here warts and all, and you get the feeling that he really wants to do better, and has promised to, with yet another version of the band (another terrific one, I should say). Chills’ fans are going to love this and newcomers might just discover their new favorite band. www.thechillsfilm.com www.thechillsmusic.bandcamp.com

Somewhere Beautiful The Chills (Fire) (released in 2013)
This was The Chills’ debut album for Fire Records and it was the band’s first album in 17 years! Their last album before this, 1996′s Sunburst was billed to Martin Phillipps and The Chills. During that 17 year lay off, lead Chill, Martin Phillipps had to contend with endless health problems including Hepatitis C. Thankfully Martin lived in a country with free health care and he was not only given medications and treatments, but he was eligible for an experimental program/ drugs which eventually cured him of his Hepatitis C. If you have never seen the documentary The Triumph and Tragedy of Martin Phillipps and you are a Chills fan, it is a must see film and it confirms the startling health cure of his Hep C (something before this doc I had no idea was possible--one imagines if he lived in America Mr Phillipps might be six feet under).
Returning to music after 17 years is quite surprising. This album, a triple LP that plays at 45 RPM, is a live show which was recorded at a private party on New Year's Eve 2011, in Central Otago, New Zealand. The set list is far more varied than either of the two live performances of the band that I have seen. The band even covers Cat Stevens (Matthew and Son)! They do however open with Night of Chill Blue here (just like both times I’ve seen them) and they almost close with I Love My Leather Jacket (which they have done both times I’ve seen them) but here they close with Rolling Moon (a single from 1982).
Above you see the album cover with a hype sticker in the upper left hand corner. This album is in a trifold album cover, so the second shot you see is what you would see if you when you open the album as a gatefold, which you will do first. The third shot shows you the entirety of that tri fold. That is a beautiful shot of Lindis Pass which is found on the South Island of New Zealand. The final photo at top is of the back of the album.
Here is a close up of the hype sticker on the cover of the album.
The two prints that come with the album are by Shane Cotton, as you see in that hype sticker. He titles the first print Rolling Moon I and the second print Rolling Moon II. You will find both prints below. They slightly smaller than an album jacket and on durable card stock.
This is a triple LP as I mentioned so here are all six sides of the labels.

But Parnell and Curry treat their subject with unusual sensitivity, helped by Phillipps’ extraordinary candour. He allows them access to every step of his treatment process, as well as to his archives (he is an obsessive collector). Around him, other band members, each of them individually numbered, step forward to speak.
What they have to say is just as unfiltered. The former drummer Caroline Easther (Chill No 12) says Phillipps made her feel anxious. The bassist Justin Harwood (Chill No 14) comments that he didn’t know if he was needed or expendable. He came to the latter conclusion after Phillipps told him he planned to write the bass parts on the band’s next album himself.
Another bassist, Terry Moore (No 6), who played in two stints with the band, wonders if he’s going to be next. The drummer Jimmy Stephenson (No 15) has been left traumatised. In tears, he pulls out a gold record of the band’s biggest album, Submarine Bells, the glass cracked after falling off his wall in an earthquake: to him it’s symbol of both “great success and shattered dreams”.

SXSW Announces 2019 Grulke Prize Winners
The South by Southwest® (SXSW®) Conference and Festivals announced the winners for this year’s Grulke Prize.
The award, now in its seventh year, was developed in honor of our friend and colleague Creative Director Brent Grulke, who passed away on August 13, 2012.
Brent’s love of music and the spirit of the festival is reflected in the three prize categories: Developing U.S. Act, Developing Non U.S. Act and Career Act.
The Developing Act Prizes are for artists who are breaking new ground with their creativity and show the most promise in achieving their career goals. The Career Act Prize is for an established artist who appeared at SXSW to reinvent themselves or launch a new project.
Past winners have included Leon Bridges, Courtney Barnett, Haim, Chvrches, Jade Bird, Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals, Iggy Pop, Todd Rundgren, Spoon and The Flaming Lips.
The Grulke Prize winner for Developing U.S. Act is Pink Sweat$. Based in Philadelphia, the artist/songwriter/producer' music is rooted in R&B and Soul, stripping back the typical genre-specific production to showcase melodic intricacy and lyrical prowess. He began making music at the age of 19 as a demo vocalist. Soon after he found himself working at the legendary Sigma Sounds Studios, where he began his career as a songwriter and began to develop his career in music. He has worked with a wide range of today's popular artists, but is now ready to take center-stage himself.
The Grulke Prize winner for Developing Non-U.S. Act is Angie McMahon. Having recently completed her first Australian headline tour, McMahon is releasing her debut album in 2019, drawing inspiration from artists like Bruce Springsteen, Lianne La Havas and Big Thief. She writes and performs across the full dynamic spectrum, shifting between gravelly intimacy and pounding rock, and her performances at SXSW bounced between whisper-quiet tones and cathartic rock roars. Early singles feature honest songwriting and romantic melodies, with songs that ruminate on life, love, and pasta.
The Grulke Prize winner for Career Act is The Chills. Hailing from Dunedin, New Zealand and fronted by the rare talent of Martin Phillipps, the band originally formed in 1980. Featuring various people over the years, Phillipps is the only remaining original member. Always a cult favorite internationally, The Chills led the charts in their native New Zealand with rock singles “Pink Frost” and “Wet Blanket”. The Chills are currently performing in support of their 2018 album Snow Bound and SXSW World Premiere Documentary Feature The Chills: The Triumph & Tragedy of Martin Phillipps.
Jurors for the Grulke Prize include music critics, industry professionals, and SXSW staff, many of whom knew and worked with Brent over the years.
SXSW dedicates itself to helping creative people achieve their goals. Founded in 1987 in Austin, Texas, SXSW is best known for its conference and festivals that celebrate the convergence of the interactive, film, and music industries. An essential destination for global professionals, the event features sessions, showcases, screenings, exhibitions, and a variety of networking opportunities. SXSW proves that the most unexpected discoveries happen when diverse topics and people come together. SXSW 2019 will take place March 13 - 22, 2020. For more information, please visit sxsw.com.
SXSW 2019 is sponsored by Capital One, smart, Bud Light, Visible, Uber Eats, and The Austin Chronicle.

1. what is the first song you remember hearing? apparently the first song that was ever played to me as a baby was brown eyed girl by van morrison, but my earliest memory is probably dancing to feeling hot hot hot by the merrymen with my dad
2. what is the first band you got into? thanks to a) my primary school music teacher who taught us how to sing yellow submarine and b) the no. 1s compilation cd in my mum's car, i got into the beatles at the ripe old age of 8. i remember one day in class i had a sore stomach and my teacher put on her magical mystery tour cd to cheer me up :') i know literally all of their songs like the back of my hand and they're just a band where in terms of their music nostalgia overrides critical thinking ability for me lmao
3. do you collect any physical music? yes !! i started collecting vinyl at 11 when i got my hands on a copy of seconds out by genesis and now i have around 200 lps. if i really like a band i will probably have some interest in getting all of their stuff on cd too. i'd love to collect cassettes but i literally cannot justify spending more money, ESPECIALLY when i don't even have a cassette player hfjdfjdks
4. what is your favourite piece of music memorabilia? absolutely my signed poster of r.e.m. that now sits above my desk. it's from the front cover of a magazine shoot circa 1995
5. what's your favourite concert you've ever been to? in 2019 i got to see the 1975 with one of my best friends and it was probably the most dopamine my brain has ever produced in my entire life. some other faves include seeing the church perform the entirety of starfish in 2018 on their anniversary tour and the b-52s in 2017 !!
6. if you could see one artist who is no longer alive in concert, who would it be? first thing that springs to mind is queen with freddie mercury, but after giving it some more thought i'd love to see crowded house with paul hester
7. have you met any musicians? unless you're counting my twitter interactions with andy partridge and robyn hitchcock, then nope
8. what is your go to album when you're feeling sad? 16 lovers lane by the go betweens. one of my top 3 favourite albums of all time and it is my no. 1 album to listen to when i feel homesick or particularly shit
9. what is your go to album when you're feeling happy? skylarking by xtc. the flawless transition from summer's cauldron to grass is serotonin in audio form
10. what is one music documentary you love? the chills: the triumph and tragedy of martin phillipps is one of my favourites, if not my favourite music documentary. at the height of my obsession with the chills i think i watched it 5 times in one week lmfao
11. what is one concert DVD you love? i don't think i actually own many concert dvds, but i love r.e.m.'s tourfilm and all of the rush concert dvds my dad has brought over to watch with me
12. do you prefer listening to playlists or albums? i love both !! i'm a chronic playlist maker - the stuff displayed on my spotify profile is like. a quarter of the amount of playlists i've actually made. but i love listening to albums in full from start to finish too, especially when they're made to be listened to that way
13. do you prefer to listen to albums in order or on shuffle? as i said, i listen to albums from start to finish, but sometimes i jump around if i'm in the mood for something. i don't usually shuffle albums though
14. what is your favourite deep cut song by your favourite artist? inside and out is a genesis song that should've been on wind and wuthering and the fact that it isn't haunts me to this day
15. what is your favourite cd/cassette/vinyl you own in terms of packaging? my vinyl copy of 14 songs by paul westerberg is designed to look like a book with the tracklist being a table of contents and the gatefold sleeve is an interview with him which is super cool. i also love my vinyl copy of in reflection by marty willson-piper that has a little booklet on how each of the songs was written/recorded :-)
if you actually read all of that ily <3 i'm gonna tag @bbbrianjones @gloria-gloom @cloudbear @westerberg and @earthandsunandmoon if you'd like to and haven't already !!
#in a shocking turn of events i have actually remembered to do stuff im tagged in#this was really fun thanks ellie !!! <3#tagged
