You don’t go 25 years with a name like Resident Evil without introducing a good mix of macabre monsters primed to haunt the nightmares of players everywhere. At their best, these frightening beasties make you want to run away and hide, challenging you to use your limited resources wisely while trying to survive the night. Even at their worst, any Resident Evil monster worth its weight in viscera will still have you gawping at just how disgusting it appears. Eugh!

With the release of Resident Evil Village and the arrival of nine-foot-tall vampire Lady Dimitrescu, we thought it worth ranking the 15 scariest monsters in Resident Evil history. That’s right – not even a top 10 would be good enough to do the creatures of Capcom’s iconic survival horror franchise justice.

15. Ustanak – Resident Evil 6

Resident Evil’s much maligned sixth entry has a lot of problems, we’ll admit, but one area where it does succeed is in its litany of boss fights. While the game features four interconnected campaigns with plenty of unique enemies, Ustanak breaks away from the crowded roster of other monsters thanks to his relentless pursuing of Jake Muller and appearance (however brief) in almost all of the featured storylines. As far as bioweapons go, he’s also one of the most mean-looking, boasting a tank-like physique and threatening mechanical claw.

You’ll fight Ustanak multiple times as part of Jake’s Resident Evil 6 campaign, first within a wintery Eastern European town as he clambers from chopper to chopper to get to you, then as part of a team-up with Leon in a shipment yard, before eventually finishing him off in a fist fight as boiling lava bubbles below you. Very much following the Nemesis template of growing persistently stronger, Ustanak is easily one of the redeeming elements of Resident Evil 6’s overt bloat.

14. Comms Officer/Scaghead – Resident Evil: Revelations

The mutated Comms Officer in spin-off title Revelations is one of the first major hurdles you come across. After learning that Chris isn’t aboard the Queen Zenobia, Jill is forced to venture into the bowels of the cruise ship, and this oversized piece of sludge is the only thing standing in your way. Taking down this two-headed behemoth involves getting him close to the various gas cylinders littered around and firing, all while keeping his many ghoulish minions at bay.

The comms officer’s human half is where the monster is at its weakest, so by placing a few well-timed sniper shots in this area players shouldn’t have too much trouble. Even still, only having a limited number of windows to jump through and tight passages to go down makes him a real problem early on. That’s why it pays to be patient (as well as smart) with this lumbering mass of goo.

13. Regenerador – Resident Evil 4

Capable of regrowing any limbs you shoot off with relative ease, the first time you encounter a regenerador in Resident Evil 4 is easily one of the adventure’s scariest moments. Though Leon is by this point well-equipped, and without Ashley as his tag-a-long helper, these sludgy beings are still quite the challenge, as they continue chasing you unless you equip your thermal vision and target their specific weakness points.

An enhanced version of the Regenerador greets you a little later in the form of an Iron Maiden. This hellish creature would enjoy nothing more than to hug Leon and impale him on the long nails that protrude from its flesh. You have to be sure to not get to close and maintain your distance, all while targeting the leech-like Las Plagas cells scattered all over its body to make it out safely.

12. Executioner – Resident Evil 5

It may have been the entry that saw the series swerve fully into action blockbuster territory, yet Resident Evil 5 also features some extremely unsettling monsters that still haunt us to this day. One of the first you come across are the handful of executioners who look and act exactly as their name would suggest. These immense figures have pins sticking out of their arms and wield a deadly axe, one swing of which is enough to turn Chris and Sheva into nothing but jam.

The executioners pose a real problem early on in Resident Evil 5’s campaign, as your weapons are severely underpowered, and you’re only given limited space in which to lead them around. Hold out for long enough, though, and you’ll manage to avoid the edge of their blade, only to encounter a more imposing version of them later on in the Desperate Escape DLC. It’s here where their axe is now laden in flames and primed to roast your skin.

11. Licker – Resident Evil 2

Arguably not just one of the scariest but also one of the most iconic monster designs to come out of Resident Evil, lickers are known for their ability to move fast, climb walls, and trip players up using their incredibly far-reaching tongue. The lickers’ one weakness is lack of sight, which Leon and Claire are wise to take advantage of when exploring the zombie-infested R.P.D building. Sometimes, however, these brain-exposed mutants are simply impossible to avoid, forcing you to outwit them and stay at a distance.

Believe it or not, lickers are thought to be an advanced form of zombie. These particular subjects were designed to be even deadlier bioweapons. We’d say they succeeded. While lickers are easily dealt with in most of the games (provided you know what you’re doing), their arrival is always unsettling since you need to remain quiet, often while trying to contend with other undead threats.

10. Lisa Trevor – Resident Evil

Altering an existing game’s story or structure is always a tricky prospect. On the one hand, you want to be true to what fans know, yet at the same time sprinkle in a few surprises. This was the case with Lisa Trevor’s debut appearance in the 2002 remake of the first Resident Evil game. She isn’t just a ho-hum boss fight, but rather a fully formed character with a surprisingly sad back story that involves her being experimented on by Umbrella for at least 20 years.

Lisa Trevor’s animal-like posture and distorted appearance is a result of this constant testing, which makes having to slay her alongside a true series villain (Albert Wesker) all the more heart breaking. The encounter itself may be relatively straightforward, but hearing Lisa wail and cry out as you’re forced to pump rounds into her is genuinely unsettling. Lisa Trevor is a welcome addition to the original Resident Evil’s canon, not least due to how terrifying her circumstances are.

9. Dr. Salvador – Resident Evil 4

What makes Dr. Salvador from Resident Evil 4 even scarier than he looks is the fact he’s not even a boss. No, all this relentless, bag-wearing maniac needs to try and keep Leon Kennedy at bay is a thirst for blood and a ripping chainsaw primed to rip our protagonist to shreds. He’s surprisingly fast and nimble in spite of his wide-set frame, which makes for a deadly combination when you’ve just heard the rumble of his tool-turned-weapon from a distance and are trying to get an accurate lock on him.

Typical handgun bullets will do very little to stop the swing of Dr. Salvador’s chainsaw. Instead, your best bet is to barrage him with shotgun shells or attempt a stun with a flash grenade. Either way, every die-hard Resident Evil fan remembers where they were the first time they heard the grinding of a metal chain so soon after entering Resident Evil 4’s Spanish village.

8. Cerberus – Resident Evil

Dogs have always played a huge role in Resident Evil, but most players will never forget the first time they smashed onto the screen. Slowly traversing down an innocent hallway of the Spencer Mansion in the original Resident Evil, the unsettling silence is suddenly disrupted by the sound of windows shattering and what appears to be two undead Dobermans. They are, in fact, four-legged monsters known in canon as Cerberuses – bio-organic weapons infected by the T-virus strain.

These doggos are far from the good boys you first expect them to be, leaving a mark on your mind as well as the hallway floor thanks to the amount of blood they drip. Their introduction kicked off the classic Resident Evil tradition of having to take down zombie canines quickly. Strung up, blinded, and suffering from a gaping hole in the chest, he serves as one of Code: Veronica’s most nightmarish monsters and boss fights.

Nosferatu is another Resident Evil monster with a deep and disturbing back story, which makes fighting him even creepier. After whipping Claire whips her partner Steve Burnside away to one side, she faces Nosferatu on a wintery helipad without much visibility. It may be fairly obvious where his weak spot is, but you’ll quite literally need to play it cool to pump enough rounds in.

6. Deborah Harper – Resident Evil 6

Bombing it through the underground cavern in a minecart while trying to avoid the clutches of Helena’s gloopy sister is one of Resident Evil 6’s best sequences. At first it seems like you may have rescued Deborah in time, but it isn’t long until Leon and his partner discover she’s already been subjected to the C-virus, causing her to catch alight before birthing a more monstrous version of herself from out of her own back.

If this imagery alone isn’t enough to make you fear Deborah, just wait until she comes at you with her four whip-like tentacles. First you face her head-on while trying not to get repeatedly lashed as the caverns crumble around you, before gunning at her from the back of a racing minecart as mentioned. The fight culminates once you hit a ridge and squeaky Deborah is forced to fall to her death. For a short while there, though, this gruesome bioweapon gets close to giving Leon and Helena the kiss of death.

5. Queen Leech – Resident Evil 0

Don’t be fooled by how regal the monster known as Queen Leech looks in human form. By the time Billy and Sherry come across her in Resident Evil Zero, she’s increased in height, gained multiple flaps, and sports a face full of enough teeth to finish you in one bite. This boss fight serves as the climax of this prequel adventure, and as such she chases you throughout multiple areas.

She’s one of the scariest Resident Evil monsters due to her disgusting final form, coupled with her ability to control loads of smaller leeches, too. Players with a hatred of slithery creatures are sure to find her disgusting.

4. Marguerite Baker – Resident Evil 7

The mutated version of William Birkin already looked grotesque in Resident Evil 2 on PlayStation One, but Capcom outdid itself when returning to the character for the 2019 remake. Transformed into a ghoulish monstrosity as a result of injecting himself with the G-Virus strain, Birkin constantly cries out in pain to his wife and daughter as players concentrate fire on the gaping eye bulging out of his right-side shoulder. This final hint of humanity makes fighting him feel devastating.

First appearing in the original PS One version of Resident Evil 3 before being slightly modernized for last year’s remake, Nemesis is a massive pain the ass for ex-S.T.A.R.S member Jill Valentine because he just doesn’t stop and can appear unannounced at almost any time. His Terminator-like determination to pursue means that you’re never safe when exploring the streets of Racoon City.

Nemesis is easily recognisable by his missing lips and stitched-together skull, both of which result in a face that only a mother could love. He becomes more deformed the longer Resident Evil 3’s campaign progresses, too, making each fight feel scarier than the last. Nemesis has only ever returned in spin-offs, but you never know when he’ll pop around the corner next.

1. Mr. X – Resident Evil 2 Remake

Sydney was still jittery when the stationed tents had grown quiet. She was heedful of the shrill pops and cracks of staticky fabric against fabric as she sat up. Each tooth of the tent's zipper was meticulously grating as she tugged it open. She worried it would wake a fellow camper and would result in a need to excuse her absence.

She climbed onto the soft, chalky dirt, and stood, surveying for watching eyes. She sighed, stealthily creeping past without brushing against stray weeds. Her stolen boots―originally Dean's boots―rasped and scuffed against the chapped soil, unreasonably wide for her feet.

When she had successfully passed them, her breath became less demanding. She wandered for a minute, reviewing the path she had raged through during her pathetic tantrum.

She forgot how to breathe as a forearm hammered into her chest and slammed her against a dusty drywall. She floundered, the breath knocked out of her lungs. The broad silhouette in front of her was barely lit by the pale, inky moonlight that pooled over his shoulders, but it was unmistakable. “Dean?” was her fearful whisper.

He faltered, realizing who he had struck. He loosened his hold for a more breathable position, but held firmly. “I knew we couldn't trust you.”

She croaked in protest, “I can explain!”

“Explain, then.” he said, just as a silvery line entered her peripheral vision: a gun.

She flinched, peeking timidly at the barrel aimed at her jaw. She inhaled shakily, a knot coiling in her throat as she watched the weapon with meek fright. Her anxiety pushed at her lungs, not allowing a full breath. Just because she was familiar with guns did not mean she wasn't intimidated by them. One hasty finger and she would be a goner.

Shaping words was more difficult than she had wished. “There was an angel―” It came out garbled, but intelligible.

“An angel? When?”

“When you all decided to ditch me! People started disappearing, and somebody had to act, so I did! We ran a search party, and he just appeared, and said he could help, and... and I just wanted to go home, you know? He said to meet alone!” She squeaked, unshed tears welling up in her eyes as her anxiety spiked. “I swear it!” Her thoughts were in an erratic frenzy: please don’t shoot me, please don't shoot me―

He looked to her with uncertainty and distrust, though his gaze never wavered. “Alone? You said people started disappearing, and you didn't think that you might have applied to the list?” There was a minuscule twitch in Dean's brow.

“I had a few people with me! We just split for a moment, and he showed up―”

Rather than his previous betrayed expression, he now looked incredulously at her. His lip twisted upward, baring his canines fiercely. “Split for a moment? You have got to be kidding me. That's all it took for someone to go MIA!”

“Yeah, but―”

“God!” The gun had withdrawn and he rubbed his forehead in aged worry. “I told you not do anything stupid!”

It was my fault, she thought bitterly. This, all of this, my fault. She'd watched enough Supernatural episodes to understand that. When someone relatively new entered the show, they, without fail, regardless of whether they were blissfully unaware of the fact, would wind up dead. The list ran on: Mary, Jess, John, Ellen, Jo, Benny, Kevin, Charlie, even Bobby almost wound up dead… anyone who so much as spoke with a Winchester ended up as a ticking time bomb.

Sydney wasn't stupid, and wasn't suicidal like Dean appeared to believe―she was just holding herself responsible. Responsible for the deaths of the town, no matter what they told her. With her scrambled memory, she could have even contributed to the brutality. The thought sent shivers spastically through her nerves. Having been introduced as an ally, only to discover her terrible crimes she couldn't even remember.

How ironic would it be―to be slain by Sam and Dean Winchester, the men she believed could have saved her. It wasn't unlikely―Supernatural loved to hurl painful twists in plots such as this. Toss in a likeable character and present them as innocent, only to discover their selfish background.

Sydney was a ‘witness’ of the Winchesters: the fresh blood in the miserable show, doomed to fall at the hands of the mysterious evil Sam and Dean miraculously stumble upon each episode. And witnesses typically died. She withheld this knowledge from Dean, as he would only deny the painful, aching truth.

It wasn't if she would die; it was when, and how painfully.

She didn't even blink as the ugly thoughts rifled throughout her mind. She only shrugged sheepishly, eyes brought down to the tarnished leather of his boots encompassing her petite ankles. Tepid air seeped into the open gape of the boots, encircling her ankles like prickling cuffs linking her feet to the ground in arrest. “Sorry.” The apology was weak, she knew, but Dean, she hoped, would buy into it.

He sighed, though visibly relaxing, clapping a hand on her shoulder as a show of forgiveness. “I'm going to come with you, okay? If all goes to worst, I have an angel blade with me.” He displayed the chromium-like handle poking from the inner pocket of his jacket.

She contemplated it, but Dean Winchester wasn't one to bargain; his decision was final. She yearned to argue and challenge it, but it was hopeless. Maybe another day, she thought wistfully. She nodded, loose boots shuffling fine puffs of dirt as they tread the alley that eventually led to the abandoned hotel.

From the outside, the hotel was made of flame-licked limestone, the structure tilted to the left to accommodate the molten temperatures. The entire set up was unstable, and there were risks of it collapsing without the addition of a trap.

“You seriously went in there? This is like... a giant Jenga block on the 40th turn.”

In short, the meeting place was not one for cowards. It was difficult to believe that this morning she had blindly stormed in there, smashing windows and kicking doors, when the entire building looked as if it would topple with a shift of breath.

Albeit, Dean wasn't a coward, so he took his chances and entered the building with Sydney at his heels.

She wanted to skip the jeopardous mission as her anxiety pitched upward, dangerously close to panic. Without Dean, she could have debated her chances and abandoned her plan if she had felt it too risky, and then snuck back to the camp as if it had never occurred. With Dean, she was either in or out, and she was petrified it would lead her to a premature death; however, she was grateful for his presence, despite the odds.

She skirted around an overturned sofa she had earlier thrown, swallowing her apprehension. “So… what, uh… what gave it away? I know you're a hunter an all… but I was pretty quiet. I mean, do you sleep that lightly?”

A stifled snicker lit his face and he vainly hid his bemused chuckling through a few failing coughs. She wasn't sure what was so funny. “Actually... I was awake. Sleep doesn't always come easy, you know... but someone's gotta watch the town with the threat of kidnapping, and all. Also, my boots do not fit your little feet. You sounded like Barney out there―stomping around like that.”

She smacked him on the shoulder. “Hey!”

The carpet reeked of mold and mildew, shriveling the air around it with it’s musty odor.

Sydney gritted her teeth as the new memory invaded, yanking any stray ideas back into the pits of her aching mind. It hurt to remember, and they gave her no context anyway. It added no motivation to prod further or seek answers, but it continued so, nonetheless. Poking at the wall in her mind had not been intentional, and hardly considered curious behavior.

Where was she obtaining such memories if they weren't her own? Her discussion with Dean about her memories being altered appeared to be exceedingly more probable.

It was slightly unnerving to rediscover the Winchesters’ memories. Or at least, that's what she now assumed they were, as these only frequently occurring when around them. The flashbacks only enhanced her skeptical view of the entire am I even human? angst that she now carried as baggage.

Typically known for their care-free attitudes, the dogs in Elke Vogelsang’s portraits are experiencing some of their more intense moments of canine anticipation, like waiting for a taste of bacon cream or finding the right time to snatch a squeaky toy. The Hildesheim, Germany-based photographer captures the canine’s fleeting expressions, shown through tilting heads, open-mouthed smiles, and wide-eyed stares. Each piece is matched with an equally playful title, like “The Dog Side of the Force” and “Bessy Muppetational.”

Vogelsang began photographing her three rescue dogs during a period of family hardship that started in 2009—she was charged with caring for her mother-in-law, who was suffering from dementia, shortly before her husband was in a coma due to a ruptured aneurysm. “I decided to start the project, despite my husband being in the hospital, or rather because of it, as I wanted to try to keep up a bit of normality and have something like a visual diary for my husband of that time,” she tells Colossal.

Now, the photographer’s work has expanded beyond the absurd images of her furry family members, and she tries to “get to know as many dogs as possible. Each and every one of them will have their own personality.” She’s traveled to Morocco and Spain to capture the lives of those living in shelters and on the streets, which has posed unique challenges. She “had to document whatever I was presented with. I couldn’t throw treats or get out a squeaker. Here I have to learn to wait for the decisive moment…These dogs had lived on the streets and didn’t know any basic commands. Those can be very difficult to photograph. ”

In order to get such revealing shots, Vogelsang isn’t afraid to appeal to their canine desires. “With every dog I learn a new trick. The energetic terrier might need action to really enjoy the session, while the sensitive sighthound might prefer a very calm environment and some super treats,” she writes. “The key is patience, trust, repetition and lots and lots of bribery.”

Elain and Feyre were sitting down in the living room of Nesta and Elain’s apartment. The three Archeron sisters just finished watching a movie when Nesta announced that she needed to get ready for a trip downtown. She didn’t mention why she was going, but the other sisters didn’t think anything odd of the trip.

Nesta’s phone began buzzing on the small coffee table causing Elain to glance down and see if her sister was receiving a call. She noticed it was a text message, but the sender was unfamiliar. In fact Elain was puzzled by the name that popped up on the screen.

“Who’s Casshole?” Elain quirked her head to the side as she continued to look at the message alert until the screen went black.

“Casserole?” Feyre said misunderstanding what her sister asked.

“No, Cass-HOLE.” Elain repeated.

Feyre looked at her sister like she must have heard wrong. “Not sure who that is.”

Nesta walked into the living room and spotted her phone on the table. “I was wondering where I put that.” She picked the phone up and checked the time on it.

“Someone named ‘Casshole’ texted you a second ago,” Elain said.

“Really?” Excitement tinting Nesta’s voice as she tried to act nonchalant. “About time! That jerk kept me waiting long enough.”

“Waiting? Are you texting someone Nesta?” Elain asked with bright eyes wondering how her sister could have kept something like this hidden.

“Well I’m meeting this person-”

“Why didn’t you tell us sooner?” Elain bounced on the couch. “What’s he like? Does he go to our school? Is he the guy that came over to help with your business project?” Elain fired questions while Nesta stood dumbfounded in the midst of it all.

“What are you talking about?” Nesta asked when Elain finally stopped to take a breath.

“She’s trying to figure out who your new friend is,” Feyre said with mirth.

Nesta didn’t catch the meaning at first, but looked aghast when she finally understood. “I’m not dating him. He texted me making sure I could still meet up to visit Blaze.”

“Oh.” Elain said. “You’re meeting with Blaze’s owner?”

“I’m going to meet Blaze,” Nesta clarified. She didn’t need her sisters thinking she was interested in Cassian. Though recently she had come to anticipate their time spent together. His cocky smirk once aggravated her to no end, but now she was slowly beginning to tolerate it.

Feyre raised her brow fractionally that it missed the notice of her sisters. She knew a certain friend of hers had recently adopted a dog named Blaze. Feyre didn’t think this was a coincidence.

“The train I need to take is leaving soon so I’ll be back later this afternoon,” Nesta said while grabbing her coat on the way toward the door.

“Don’t forget we’re having dinner at my place next week,” Feyre said. “Mor is eating with us so we’ll probably order pizza that night.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Nesta put on her shoes and said goodbye to her sisters before taking off to the dog park.

When she arrived at the park it was easy to find Cassian and Blaze among the other dog owners who were playing with their canines. Cassian’s tall frame stood out while Blaze rambunctiously ran around with a tennis ball in his mouth. Nesta stood yards away to watch the pair undisturbed.

It was clear Cassian and Blaze were enjoying their time together. She could hear Cassian laughing and calling out to Blaze when the amber haired pitbull bounded off after the ball. When Blaze finally returned Cassian would pet him and ruffle the top of his head causing Blaze’s ears to flop with each movement. The scene made Nesta smile without restraint and made her decide to join in on the fun.

Nesta whistled in a short unique pattern that she always used at the animal shelter. Blaze was playing with a ball, but his head shot up at the noise. He ran as fast as his legs could carry him to where she was. Cassian whirled around thinking he was going to need to chase Blaze down, but stopped in his tracks at the sight of Nesta bending down to greet Blaze.

“How are you boy?” Nesta laughed as Blaze jumped up and down on his forelegs in joy. This wasn’t the first time they had met at the dog park with Cassian, but Nesta was always overcome with happiness when she saw them. “Did you miss me?”

“I think we both missed our quality time with you,” Cassian walked up to them with a grin starting to form. “Was your trip in the subway good?”

Nesta looked up with a bright smile still on her face. “It was worth it to be here.” She stood up and brushed off stray pieces of dirt along the hem of her pants from Blaze’s paws.

“After we get done here I can drop you off so you don’t need to take the subway again,” Cassian offered.

“You don’t need to do that,” Nesta said and walked beside Cassian after he tossed the tennis ball again. Blaze took off after it and almost overshot where the ball had landed.

“I would like to give you a ride though,” Cassian said.

Nesta subtly glanced at Cassian from the corner of her eye. She didn’t know if Cassian intended to say such phrase with a double meaning. His expression didn’t reveal that his intentions were less than an innocent.

“Thanks, but I don’t mind walking. It gives me extra time to think.”

“And what’s been on your mind?” Cassian asked.

Nesta shrugged. “School, work and the usual stuff.”

“Really? No handsome charming men filling your thoughts recently,” Cassian chuckled at the pointed look Nesta gave him.

Although he wasn’t too far off with that statement if Nesta was telling the truth. Cassian had been entering into her life in such odd ways that Nesta found troubling. In the grocery store she wondered what meals Cassian was cooking that day and when she smelled chocolate she imagined the rest of Cassian’s scent filtering into her senses. Hell when she was looking up presents to buy Elain and Feyre for the holidays Nesta was curious about what kind of gift Cassian would like. It was troubling for Nesta to have so many mundane things reminding her of this brutish man.

Nesta looked forward and watched the other dogs running around in the park. “Actually I have had someone on my mind.”

Cassian stumbled and tried to recover from his shock. “Are you serious?”

“Why wouldn’t I?” Nesta let a small smile play on her lips. Cassian meanwhile looked astonished and fixated his eyes on her.

“And who is this lucky guy?” Cassian said brusquely. He truly didn’t want to hear Nesta talking about some other man, but he wanted to know who had caught her eye. And perhaps figure out a way to capture her attention instead. It had been almost 6 months since their first heated encounter. Things were moving slowly between them as Cassian began seeing through her defensive walls better. She still didn’t completely trust him, but in time he knew Nesta would realize Cassian’s intentions were true.

“You actually know him,” Nesta glanced at Cassian for a fraction of a second, but it didn’t miss his notice. For a moment he didn’t know how to respond.

“Oh? And what’s he like?” Cassian eased his gait so he could walk beside her. He watched her closely with anticipation.

Cassian could hardly believe he was the man she was talking about, but who else could it be? No one from the gym had spoken with her enough times that Nesta would be serious about pursuing a relationship. She knew no one from his workplace other than Rhys and Azriel who were already taken by Feyre and Mor. The only person left was Cassian himself.

“He’s outgoing and has these bright hazel eyes to go with his personality,” Nesta listed.

She’s talking about me! I can’t believe it! Cassian barely maintained a neutral expression, but he was ecstatic beyond compare.

“In fact I think I need some his attention right now,” Nesta stopped and looked up at Cassian with those steel-gray eyes he has come to think about more often these days.

“And what kind of attention do you need,” Cassian stepped closer. He would give her anything she asked.

She looked up at him thoughtfully before speaking in a low tone. “A kiss would be nice.”

Cassian’s eyes widened. Oh she would get a kiss. And more if she desired.

“Don’t let me stop you,” Cassian’s husky voice and cocky smile stirred something inside Nesta. She smiled like a cat who caught a mouse.

“Blaze! Come here boy!” Nesta called and Blaze ran back to them before stopping in front of Cassian and Nesta with skid. Blaze dropped the ball and looked up at them waiting for affection. Nesta knelt in front of the dog and fondly ruffled his ears.

“Why don’t you give me a kiss handsome man?” Nesta said and Blaze proceeded to lick her cheek a few times with her laughing in glee.

Cassian was completely confused before he realized he had been tricked. Nesta had been talking about Blaze this whole time. Cassian wanted to be disappointed, but he had to appreciate how clever Nesta was to keep in on in his toes. His laugh bellowed across the park at how well Nesta had played him this round.

“I have to admit that was good,” Cassian said when Nesta stood up with a beaming smile. She laughed along with him and was glad he took her teasing in good spirits. Of course she shouldn’t expect any less considering how often he gave her similar treatment with his flirtations.

Cassian admired the way Nesta laughed without restraint. Her stern demeanor drifted away like storm clouds leaving bright open skies that he wanted to bask in. Without a second thought he grabbed her hand and took off in a run making sure he ran slow enough so she wouldn’t stumble.

“Let’s see if Blaze will give chase after I’ve taken his lady away!” Cassian said with a whoop and Nesta was quick to join in the run. Her fingers tightened as they bolted across the grass with Blaze running after them. It didn’t take long for the dog to catch up, but the trio continued to laugh and run in the chilly air that was brought with the upcoming colder season.

They circled back to where they first started with Cassian and Nesta heaving in deep breaths while Blaze pranced around them eager to give another chase.

“Now that was a work out!” Nesta said as she inhaled deeply. She leaned on Cassian to steady her body and he wrapped an arm around her shoulders as if it was second nature. Her head rested near his heart where she could hear it pounding from their recent run.

“Oh how cute!” And elderly women passing by said with her small terrier dog on a leash.

Cassian, thinking she was talking about Blaze who sat at his feet, nodded at the woman with a polite smile. “Blaze is quite the looker. In fact he’s stolen this little lady’s heart as well,” Cassian nudged Nesta who was still under his arm. She rolled her eyes amicably at Cassian’s words and gave the elderly women a small smile.

“Oh! Yes your dog is quite adorable, but I was talking about you two,” the elder said. “You’re such a lovely couple that it makes me happy to see how darling you both act together.”

Nesta broke apart from Cassian as if burned. Both of them tried to explain over each other that they were not dating, but the older woman was already walking off with her dog. This left Nesta and Cassian awkwardly glancing away from each other while Blaze wagged his tail between them.

“I should get going,” Nesta said finally.

“Wait,” Cassian reached for her, but stopped short. “I’ll take you home.”

“It’s fine,” Nesta said.

“Are we fine?”

“What do you mean?”

“You acted-,” Cassian searched for a word to fit the situation. “We were having fun,“ he tried again. "And I liked that a lot, but when that woman thought we were dating you immediately hid behind that shield of yours.”

“Just because someone mistook us for a couple, doesn’t mean I’m going to get bent out of shape. I just didn’t want there to be a misunderstanding.” Nesta gave Blaze a parting pet. “Honestly Cassian it’s fine. Besides I don’t hide behind anything.”

Cassian hummed in thought. Deliberating whether to call her out on that bluff. He massaged the back of his neck and appeared to be conflicted. Nesta couldn’t comprehend the reason.

“Here you are asking if I’m fine, yet you’re the one who looks like he has something bothering him,” Nesta said.

Cassian looked at her and opened his mouth before shutting it without saying a word. He shook is head and exhaled a deep breath.

“Don’t worry about me. Just thinking is all.” Cassian leaned down and put the leash on Blaze. “Are you sure you don’t want a ride?”

“Positive,” Nesta responded. “No sense in you driving south when you live on the north side.”

“Nesta I would drive hours if you needed me,” Cassian said seriously and Nesta had to look away from how truthful those words rang. Cassian was always willing to lend a helping hand no matter the cost to him. He would do that for anyone in need. But Nesta didn’t want to rely on the charity of others when she was capable of taking care of herself.

“Thanks for the offer, but it’s not a problem for me to walk.” Nesta said. “I’ll see you next week for training right?”

Cassian nodded. “Yes and we’ll be working on sparring as well.”

“Are you joking or are you honestly going to be spar with me?” Nesta cautiously asked.

It had been a couple weeks since the incident with Devlon and none of them had brought it up since. Nesta had noticed though the following week that Devlon had more bruises along with a few on Cassian. When she asked the other gym members about it they told her Cassian challenged Devlon to a match. Evidently Cassian was still pissed with the way Devlon treated Nesta and made sure that his point was clear. Nesta was off limits. That fact infuriated her knowing that Cassian didn’t think she was capable enough of taking care of her own business.

“Or should I just ask the other gym members to spar with me? I’m sure they wouldn’t through a tantrum if I took a few hits,” Nesta said with ire.

Cassian narrowed his eyes at the undertone statement she was hinting at. “It’s common knowledge not to mess with another trainer’s student. It disrupts the training if someone else steps in.” Cassian crossed his arms. “Besides I'm not one to stand by and let someone’s actions go unpunished when they intentionally insult and harm my students.”

“Isn’t that the point of sparring? Hurting someone else?”

“What Devlon did was more than that,” Cassian gritted out. “He wanted to make you suffer. I heard what happened before I got there. Trust me he was not looking to take part in a clean spar.”

“I wish you would trust me enough not to go behind my back and fight my battles for me,” Nesta admitted with a glare.

“I had your back Nesta,” Cassian said slowly. “That’s what friends do. We defend each other.”

“Then show me next week how to defend myself so I don’t need to rely on you,” Nesta said.

“Would that be so bad? Relying on someone else for a change instead of keep to yourself like some lone wolf?” Cassian clenched his hands. “Friends are there to keep you stable and grounded. Without them…you can’t live like that knowing people won’t be there for you.”

“And what would you know about that? You’ve always had you inner circle of friends,” Nesta stood firm. “I doubt you even know what it feels like to have people you trust turn on you.”

Cassian jolted his head back as if slapped. “And that’s where you’re wrong,” Cassian bit out with eyes flickering between grief and guilt. “But you wouldn’t believe me no matter what I said.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing,” Cassian strode by with Blaze following behind. “Just know that we all make mistakes Nesta and sometimes the price of those mistakes linger for the rest of our lives.”

Without another word or parting glance Cassian left with Blaze. Nesta watched them go. Wondering what must have happened to make Cassian look so…defeated. She never imagined seeing Cassian walk away with rigid shoulders as though the weight of the world was pressing down on him. His words echoed in her mind and for the first time Nesta felt as though her words had cut too deep. Cassian’s old wounds reopened and she didn’t know how to heal them. One question filled her thoughts though.

Aside from the popular shorthaired pointer, here are two other types of English Setters – wiredhaired and longhaired. All are aknowledged by AKC’s registry and all are inborn hunters.

15. Appalachian Turkey Dog

Appalachian Turkey Dogs are the type of canines which we learned more about from true hunters. There are many types of dogs that will be skilled enough to hunt turkeys, but no breed is better at this job than Appalachian Turkey dogs. These dogs are not yet recognized by AKC’s registry and they are, essentially, still in the making.

Appalachian Turkey dogs have been bred from a mixture of Plott hounds, setters and pointers. Even though the name suggest a canine that would be great at chasing turkeys, the focus with this breed was an all-around best hunting dog: good stamina, speed, desire to chase and skills for hunting waterfowl.

16. Golden Retriever

It’s not your regular family dog. Golden Retrievers (breed profile) are one of the most common and popular retrievers that are considered best hunting dogs for a specific type of assignments, right after Labrador Retrievers. Goldens are amazing small game hunters, and will be a good second choice.

Aside from being ideal for hunting, these dogs are simply perfect companions anywhere else. Their loyalty, companionship and happy go lucky attitude is something every hunter will benefit from. Golden Retrievers are not simply your good looking family dogs, and majority of hunters respect this breed as a decent choice for certain types of hunts.

17. Rhodesian Ridgeback

Originating from South Africa, and also known as African lion dog, Rhodesian Ridgebacks were bred around the late 19th century. Their primary purpose at first was to keep the lions at bay either while on hunts and waiting for the owner to make the kill, or as protectors at home. Rhodesian Ridgeback dog breed have always been known for their ferocity and bravery, which is why they were often used not as hunting dogs but rather good guard dogs.

Eventually, this breed became a hunter of big game. Rhodesian Ridgebacks were not only hunting lions, but also a lot of other wild African animals, such as baboons and wild pigs. Unlike with lions where they wait for the hunter to make the kill, Ridgebacks have been known to fight and kill smaller animals like baboons on their own without any intervention of the owner.

18. Treeing Walker Hound

Known as one of the best all-around hound dogs, Treeing Walker Hound is known to have a strong sense of smell and ability to chase after many different types of animals: cougars, racoons, coyotes, deer and bears. Just as you would expect from hounds that are best hunting dogs, they are also perfect on speed and prey drive – two things which hunters love these dogs the most for.

Treeing Walker Hounds are descendants of Foxhounds, and are better for short and quick hunts where you expect to find the prey within a few hours rather than days. Their stamina will allow to keep up with some of the fastest animals, and other skills to catch up to them.

19. German Wirehaired Pointer

Another amazing all-around hunting breed is German Wirehaired Pointer, also known as Deutsch Drahthaar. These dogs are versatile best hunting dogs ideal for most animal prey. They are of medium to large size, have calm temperament and thick coats, and have been known as a leading gun dog in Germany since the middle of 20th century.

Most professional hunters know this breed as the best all-arounder because of their ability to hunt any sort of game on any type of terrain. They have a strong nose, coat and great tracking skills, which makes them a perfect hunting dog for both land and water. Oftentimes, these dogs will work with groups of hunters, and they are particularly good at this task.

20. Field Spaniel

Not a common choice mostly because of how rare these dogs are, Field Spaniels are definitely good small game retrieving dogs just like most of their Spaniel cousins. They’ve also originated from England and were first bred for bird flushing and retrieving. Field Spaniels might not be the absolute best hunting dogs mostly due to their temperament, but they have the skills and body for it.

These dogs are also very affectionate and happy most of the time. Because of their ancestry, they do need to be used as working dogs and are expected to either hunt or do other physical labor; otherwise, if not given enough exercise and things to do, a Field Spaniel can turn into a destructive brat. Overall, these dogs make excellent family companions. They are very cautious with strangers though.

21. Plott Hound

Those of you looking for a truly tough dog that will face the danger in the eyes should look no further than a Plott Hound. These dogs are some of the best hunting dogs one can ask for when on the quest for big game, such as bears. Plott Hounds are intelligent canines, who know how to track and approach the prey, stand their ground, threaten when needed.

A purebred Plott Hound will have a muscular body and a strong frame; they are tenacious canines with a lot of athleticism in them. Understanding the principles of hunting is also what these dogs are good at, and a Plott Hound will make sure to constantly release short and sharp barks so that you can keep track of where the action is happening while on fast track of a prey. If you’re after cougars, bears or wild boars – this is your breed.

22. Dogo Argentino

Another great big game hunting dog is oddly sounding Dogo Argentino breed. If you think Pit Bulls are scary, wait till you see this big and muscular beast. Physical abilities of this breed are much more suitable for hunting than even Pit Bulls’. This catch dog will change places with your chase dog whenever the time comes and fight whoever he needs to fight – a hog, cougar or bear. They will sink in their teeth and hold onto the prey until the hunter catches up.

This South American breed is much stronger, larger and more athletic than Pit Bulls. First, Dogo Argentino started hunting pumas and wild pigs, but afterwards, hunters realized the type of best hunting dogs these canines are, and soon, Dogo Argentino became the most popular choice for those hunts when you expect the dog to meet the prey face to face.

23. Sussex Spaniel

Naturally, Spaniels are inborn hunters, which is why we’re seeing many different types of them on this list. Now it’s the Sussex Spaniels’ turn, another Spaniel originated from England that was bred for very specific hunting conditions and later almost became extinct. They are not a hunter’s quintessential best choice, but are still considered to be some of the best hunting dogs for bird hunts.

Sussex Spaniels are slow working dogs but have great noses for small game tracking and flushing. The biggest problem with Sussex Spaniels is their stubbornness, which makes them quite difficult to train. But once you get there, your dog will forever be your trusty hunting companion. This breed is the most laid back of all the spaniels, so they would be great for city life. They also have a tendency to howl and bark when left alone.

24. Mountain Cur

Hunters who are looking to embark on a small game chases after animals such as squirrels or raccoons will not find a better hunting dog than Mountain cur. Remember the time you enjoyed chasing after pigeons and how fun that was? Well, Mountain cur still enjoys doing that for a living. After originating in Europe, Mountain curs were brought to the US in the 20th century specifically for hunting and protection from raccoons.

It’s a well known fact that Mountain curs will always dominate any type of squirrel hunt, as they are the most adept at it. The way their bodies are design, their athleticism, medium sized frame and speed, as well as their enthusiasm for small prey makes them some of the best hunting dogs out there.

25. German Shorthair Pointer

Another famous looking canine is the German Shorthair Pointer. This breed has the nose and stamina to hunt even the most hard to catch birds in the wild. The problem with some of that small bird game is keeping up with their pace, and German Shorthair Pointers are quite possibly the only dog breed that can do that. Their intelligence will allow the dog to outwit the prey, and their stamina will let them to keep up with the bird for as long as is needed.

German Shorthair Pointers are great for climbing steep and rugged hillsides as well as chase through even the most nastiest terrains. This breed is a combination of pointers and hounds, which is how the perfect hunting dog was born long time ago in Germany. Hunters looking for one of the best hunting dogs for bird hunts will never, ever go wrong with a German Shorthair Pointer.

26. Spinone Italiano

Spinone Italiano is one of the earliest breeds which as used as pointing dogs. They originated in Italy as far back as the 1200’s. Spino Italion is a very versatile gundog breed that mostly enjoys in helping with pointing and retrieving different types of game. Many years have went into perfecting this breed and the result is an intelligent, loyal and easily trained bird hunting dog.

Although Spinone Italion is definitely one of the best hunting dogs, their primary disadvantage is their speed. Spinone Italiono is quite slow for an all-around best hunter, but their intelligence and stubbornness is what sells them. Additionally, these dogs are very devoted and loving canines that love to please the owner. They are a good breed to have around children and other dogs as they have calm temperaments.

27. Vizsla

Hungarian dog Vizsla is a known and skilled hunter of fowl and upland game. These dogs were bred to work at pointing, falconry and trailing, and they are quite good at it, with hunters using Vizslas today as one of the best hunting dogs for turkeys, pheasants, grouse, woodcock and quail.

As natural hunters, Vizslas are known to have strong noses and are one of the most easily trained dogs. Their fearlessness also adds a few solid points to hunting. Vizslas are gentle and very affectionate yet sensitive dogs. They originated from Hungary sometime in the middle ages, and have been great hunters since them. This dog breed has a tendency to be stubborn and excitable, and they make great companions for truly active pet owners.

28. Weimaraner

This unique an interest looking breed originated in Germany in early 19th century, and have specialized in hunting large game, trailing and pointing. This dog was royalty’s first choice for hunting boars, bears, deer and other game of that type and size. They love running and hunting and do not like being penned up, which is where their true attitude comes into play.

This is an all-purpose gun dog breed, and all their origins point to them being one of the best hunting dogs that ever existed. Weimaraners have a very strong instinctive prey drive, and there are very few animals whom they can tolerate for a long period of time. Their urge to constantly hunt is undeniable. Weimaraner can also be too much for small children as they can be rambunctious due to their nature.

29. Wirehaired Pointing Griffon

Wirehaired Pointing Griffon – another gundog breed known well from the old days. These canines are extremely skilled at what they do – mostly pointing and retrieving – and are most certainly one of the best hunting dogs around. They originated in France in the 19th century as dogs for hunting in and around water, as well as through thick undergrowth. Their coat is absolutely perfect for those types of hunting locations.

Wirehaired Pointing Griffons are an intelligent breed that are willing to go through a lot to please the owner. Even on the job, these dogs remain playful and have an upbeat, puppy-type of personality, which can be a good and a bad thing for serious hunters. The excitable temperament will often cause issues, but in the end, Wirehaired Pointing Griffons will do the job they have set out to do.

30. Chesapeake Bay Retriever

Last on the list of best hunting dogs but definitely not least is the Chesapeake Bay retriever who has a fascinating story of how they originated. Back in the 19th century, there was a shipwrecked brig from England that was rescued by an American ship. On board, there were two Newfoundland puppies, one black and one red.

They proved to be great water retrievers later on and they became so popular that people would bring their retrievers to be bred with them. The breed became very advanced in their water retrieving skills later on. Today, Chesapeake Bay Retriever are some of the best retrieving dogs.

This is a hard working dog breed that is not afraid of water, dirt or brutal terrain. Compared to Labrador Retrievers, Chesapeaks have a more solid build and their coat is more suitable for hunting that involves a lot of water contact. Usually, these dogs absolutely love to swim and will do so eagerly, especially for the prey.

How Your Dog Can Pass the Canine Good Citizen Test

I’ve done lots of training with my five-year-old Vizsla, Finley. Tons, in fact. She’s smart and energetic and really wants to work with me on new challenges. Plus, she has severe separation anxiety, so my husband and I have spent countless hours on basic training, desensitization and counterconditioning, trick training in an effort to physically and mentally exhaust her, and more. But one thing we had yet to tackle is the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen Test.

First, what is the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen Test?

The AKC’s Canine Good Citizen, or CGC, program has been around since 1989 and is intended to instruct and inspire responsible dog ownership. Acing the test is about much more than bragging rights or framing a certificate to hang on your wall. There are practical benefits to your pup passing the 10-point exam. It’s a major bargaining chip when you’re checking into a dog-friendly hotel, it’s a good starting point for more advanced training like agility, it will give both you and your dog a boost of confidence and perhaps inspire you to do even more training together, and you may even inspire other people and pets in your community to achieve the title.

What’s more, if you’re hiring a dog sitter or walker or trying to enroll your pup in doggy daycare, having the CGC credential will be somewhat of a feather in your cap. And you’re given official acknowledgement — plus self-assurance— that your dog knows how to behave just about anywhere.

I was convinced the program was worth our time. To get started, I read the AKC’s Responsible Dog Owner’s Pledge, which covers everything from ensuring that your dog’s health, safety, exercise, training and quality of life needs are met, to picking up your dog’s poop in public places. Then, reading through the test itself, I soon realized this was something we had been preparing for since day one of welcoming Finley into our family. Of course, there are obedience classes you can register for and even formal CGC training that you can complete, but it might not be necessary if you take matters into your own hands and are motivated to help your pet. Here’s how I did it with my dog, Finley.

Test 1: Accept a friendly stranger

How Finley fared: Finley is the type of dog who receives a lot of attention when we’re out and about. People often approach us exclaiming, “How cute!” or “Awww!” and my husband and I often think they’re referring to our little (human) girl. Nope, they’re usually in awe of Finley. She’s a beautiful pup with a warm disposition and seems to be a magnet for friendly people.

From the very beginning when we brought her home at 7 weeks, we exposed her to all types of people in all types of situations to help her become well socialized. This has always meant a lot of leash walks around the neighborhood, running into people we know or other people with dogs who want to say “hello.” The AKC test requires your dog “show no sign of resentment or shyness” when a friendly stranger approaches to speak with the owner and shake their hand. Check and check! Finley usually just waits to be acknowledged, which usually happens soon after I am.

Test 2: Sit politely to be pet

How Finley fared: Thankfully, this is one of Finley’s favorite things to do: accept attention from a new person. And one of the first things we trained her to do is sit when we stop to greet someone or for her to receive attention. And much like test 1, we get to practice this almost every day on our walks outside. She does this successfully, again without “shyness or resentment.”

Test 3: Appearance and grooming

How Finley fared: Although Finley doesn’t require haircuts, we’ve been giving her baths, dremeling her nails, cleaning her ears and brushing her teeth from the very beginning. She certainly doesn’t love the experience of being groomed, but she tolerates it well. As instructed by her breeder, we got her used to having us touch her all over her body, put our hands in her mouth, and examine her ears and eyes. As far as appearances go, Finley is the type of dog who licks herself clean at the end of the day, so she’s always well kept. But for dogs who aren’t inclined to do that, some well-timed treats while you brush and bathe are a good idea.

Test 4: Walk on a loose lead

How Finley fared: Having plenty of experience walking dogs who pull, I was highly motivated to train my own dog to walk politely when we brought her home. Thanks to some great web articles, my husband and I were able to train her in her first year. Part of the AKC test requires doing a right turn, a left turn and an about turn, with at least one stop in between. For a million reasons, these are all part of our daily walks so Finley is more than accustomed to following our sometimes erratic routes.

Test 5: Walk through a crowd

How Finley fared: I’m the type of person who will take my dog with me wherever I’m going, whether it’s the farmers’ market, the park or dog-friendly errands like Home Depot. So while we don’t get tons of practice on crowded city streets, Finley has plenty of experience weaving through people both indoors and out.

Test 6: Sit and down on command, and stay in place

How Finley fared: For Finley, sit was the easiest command to learn and she does it 100 times a day for us now. But there were times I never thought Finley would learn the down command. She seemed averse to lying on the ground from a standing or sitting position, unless it was to collapse in a heap at the end of the day. But lots of training (and treats!) finally got us there. Getting her to stay was not as difficult as I had feared. Still, she waits politely for her instructions and is always happy-as-can-be when we give her the “ok!”

Test 7: Come when called

How Finley fared: Being a velcro dog, Finley has to be told to “stay” to get further than a few feet from us. This test requires walking 10 feet away from your dog, so I would have Finley sit or go into the down position, then stay while I walked away. Again, she’s vigilantly listening for the “come!” command and more than happy to oblige the mini reunion.

Test 8: React to another dog

How Finley fared: Introducing Finley to other dogs from an early age (after she received all her shots, of course) meant putting her on the path to good canine citizenship. At this point, I’m confident my pup will get along with just about any other dog. This portion of the test involves other dogs and their owners approaching for a greeting but the dogs “should show no more than casual interest in each other.” I’ll be the first to admit, my dog is an enthusiastic butt sniffer. So to make sure she keeps her distance I simply tell her to “sit” and “stay.”

Test 9: React to distraction

How Finley fared: I’d argue that this is a great skill for humans to have as well, but teaching a dog to remain calm during any unexpected noise or movement can be super important. Letting your dog explore the world with you is one great way to do that. Finley has witnessed cars backfiring, bikers whizzing by, and toy basketball hoops crashing down to the ground (thanks to our toddler), all without flinching. It would be difficult to orchestrate such distractions, but thankfully the real world provides plenty of practice.

Test 10: Supervised separation

How Finley fared: If you’re a doting dog parent (like me), you’re familiar with the concept of asking someone to watch your dog or keep her company if you leave the house for more than a few hours. Not only have paid dog sitters watched Finley, but nearly all of our extended family members have as well. For the record, Finley’s separation anxiety has little to do with me or my husband. She loves people — all people— and just wants to hang out with them. In this case, the test requires I go out of sight for three minutes and Finley stay with the trusted handler without panicking or misbehaving. As long as it’s a warm body willing to be next to Finley, she’s good as gold!

Once you’ve mastered the CGC test, there’s no telling what else you and your dog can accomplish. For Finley and me, that might mean some tracking work. My pup loves a good scent and can find treats that we hide around the house for her. Anything to keep her busy and on her best behavior!
