The Electric Pickle

The first time that I ever heard about the Electric Pickle was in the middle of a conversation with Luis Nieves, a co-worker with whom I shared the two things that link me to any person: the abiding thrall of retail and a taste for nightlife. It wasn’t true, but he did mess with my imagination and introduced me to the idea of a darker Bardot going down south on North Miami Avenue. I’m ashamed to admit that I got to enjoy the Pickle at a really late stage of its run, It took Terry’s birthday to finally take me there for the first time. It was september of 2016, a tuesday night, The Love Below party. I fell in love with the design of that club, it was like nothing I had seen before, it didn’t have sofas and tables arranged to look like a hotel lobby, It didn’t have a line of unfriendly yuppies by the bar, it wasn’t glamorous... When the music got loud, there was no chance of telling people about your problems, the strobes went on, arms up, and the infamous disco ball -that acted as if it had a life of its own- exploded in colors as a drunken rant in the front seat of an Uber... And everybody was dancing... There really was no better place to be. Many times I headed there with only $60 in my pocket and a screenshot of the RSVP, and inside I’d act like a host, offering cigarretes and asking randos if they were having fun. Sometimes those same randos would ask me to keep drinking with them in a hotel room or in a condo at Midtown 2, because meeting people at The Pickle was the closest thing to a 9 year old making friends in a public pool. The Pickle’s booking was very diverse -They would book someone like Avalon Emerson and then book Omar S months later- it could give you a heavy dose of techno -courtesy of visionary promoter Diego Martinelli- or you could just go there for Love/Hate Classic Sundays and listen to an entire hour of Mary J Blige. That club was whatever the fuck you wanted it to be for you. To me, It was a romantic place. I even remember telling owner Will Renuart how grateful I was for that, “Hey, listen to this guy! He takes all his Tinder dates here”. And I did, girls loved it. I remember dancing with Lis to Lovefool by The Cardigans on a New Year’s Eve party, and I don’t know if that kind of feminine fantasy could have happened somewhere else. The Pickle was the first nightclub that Estefania ever stepped into and Kourtney’s favorite spot for an entire summer. But what really made the Pickle a great nightclub? Why do people continue to refer to it as “intimate”? That overplayed word that sounds like an easy way of describing any room that happens to be somber. Well, there was this one night. All Vinyl, september of 2018. Will Renuart is DJing and around 6:oo am there are just about 20 of us randos inside. The place is dead, no one is buying drinks and people are leaving. After 7:00 am, Sino -Will’s wife- starts passing out cans of Modelo and a bottle of mezcal, complimentary drinks. Will is doing that thing where he holds each vinyl as if it was a handheld fan. Like it’s too hot, like maybe he thinks “get ready cause this record is fire”, I don’t know, ask him. And then it’s 8:00 am and no one wants this thing to keep going but him and maybe the part of myself that never wants to go back home. It’s not a business anymore, so what’s the point of keeping the music so loud? It’s not a private party. At this point Will Renuart is DJing in an empty club, for a handful of friends and strangers, some kind of Denis Lavant in the last scene of Beau Travail. And I think to myself, this dude must really love this. And now it’s all over.

Really Outta Place Rant, If You Know Me Personally Please Don’t Read!

I don’t think this post warrants any trigger warnings but the last thing I want to do is upset people so if by chance someone actually reads this post and wants tws lmk.

All my life I was bullied for who I was, by my parents, by my grandparents, the kids at school, even the fucking teachers. I couldn’t sleep. I had no outlet because my family judged everything I liked, and gave me shit for showing dislike for things too. Everything I did was poked and prodded, I had no privacy. Not even my journals felt safe. All my life I’ve also experienced an inability to see images in my head, and I had OCD, so the only thoughts I had were songs, as I was obsessed with certain albums. My brain has never felt like an escape, or a safe place, it was just a radio I could never turn off, and I felt ostracized because everything I learned and saw I had to slowly break down over the noise (as I was too insecure to do it out loud), so I’ve always felt behind.

All my life I would also black out and when I woke up things would have happened that I didn’t do. It didn’t even feel like I was really possessed. It was like I got shut off. I didn’t retreat into my mind, I just sunk back. I would just watch events unfold in front of me like the world’s most boring movie. And I would forget a lot of happened. But sometimes it was more like a record skip. My life just kept changing and I suddenly was told I liked things that I didn’t. I’ve always hated confrontation so I just went with it. I hated everything about myself, everything I created, everything I said I loved, because I felt like they weren’t mine, they belonged to the me that everyone else knew, the me that everyone preferred. I started sleeping around at an early age. I tended to drift towards people that treated me like shit. Just because at that point in my life I didn’t have any sort of emotional outlet for the decades worth of bottled up emotions. I slowly at that point started to get the ability of just giving up control. I could blackout on demand when I was too stressed or scared or sad or whatever. I started doing this a lot during sex because I wasn’t sexually attracted to the people I dated.

At long last, I finally got to college, to freedom, and I started expressing myself through music and poetry, but the voices were still there, and I kept losing control during the moments I wanted to be there the most. I met two amazing friends and the most amazing girl I had ever met. I started a band, and I wrote a few songs that I think will really be a hit. The girl I liked said yes to going out with me. I finally had everything I wanted. Everything I never had. But I didn’t want to share it with the other me, so I started using DPH to sleep and repress her. And it seemed to work for a while. Until one night, a friend of mine stayed over, and when I fell asleep Alex took over and started flirting with her (This was not one of the times where my life felt like a movie, it was one of the times where I wasn’t watching). It got to the point where she was breathing pretty fast and wanted to go further. But something happened. I woke up. and I REALLY misunderstood the situation. I told my friends and they had my back, but luckily the girl started to get through to them and they believed her. They turned on me. Everyone turned on me. The girl I liked started to drift and I think she probably got the wrong idea. I was mostly alone until this sweet girl told me she had a crush on me. She would come over but all I had the energy to do was sleep. I couldn’t help it, it was a combination of weed, my meds, the dph, and the fact that Alex took over when I slept. I felt exhausted constantly. We started getting close, she was really sweet and her and her friend were there for me. I was still recovering from my break up before I met the girl I was actually attracted to, and that “break up” too. So I kept getting more stressed. I turned to dph harder. Like an insane amount. I kept giving my pills to my gf to try and get clean but it didn’t work. I would black out and wake up with another bottle. My roommate tried to report me and he came over and something inside me just broke. I screamed at him, which sucks because hes one of the sweetest guys I’ve ever met and I really hurt him. I cut off everyone and stopped going to classes. Winter break rolled around and I went home to my tiny farming hometown. I felt even more alone, as I only had one friend back home. And while she was great, it wasn’t enough to keep me from giving up. I started spending an insane of money on otc drugs to get fucked up as much as possible. I didn’t want to die but I felt like the world wanted me to, that’s my excuse for my addiction. I came back to campus after a few failed dates and a few weeks of dph and tussin abuse and just couldn’t bring myself to go to my classes. I keep trying to take my life but everytime i do I black out and they take over and I just can’t. I need something immediate, like a jump or a gun, everytime I try to hang myself or over dose I just can’t. My friends slowly started to forgive me for what happened. I explained my perspective and they trusted me. things started to heal. but I was still skipping my classes, and I was blacking out more and more. but every time I wake up more people are talking to me. The other me has two boyfriends, and a bunch of boy toys on campus. they do my homework, talk to my friends. They’re hosting an orgy. They’re doing everything I was always too scared to do, but theyre also stealing my life. People have msg’d me and came to my door asking for Alex. My friends are down with her being in front full time. They’re letting her lead the band I always wanted, they’re stealing my art and my music and saying its theirs. And I can’t even do anything, i just don’t have the courage. Everyone hates me, they call me “Hyde.” But the thing that really, really, gets me, is that they claim they’re the original, they say I’m a facade and I’m not real. to not worry about me because i was just a character, that my songs and my thoughts and my journal and my money belong to them, that they’re the ones that did all the hard work, that they worked 60 hour weeks in a kitchen back home, that they made all the decisions about my life and look. And everyone believes them?? I don’t understand why people can’t see Alex is a lying psychopath. I’ve lost everything. I’ll I wanted to do is suppress them with sleeping meds because I didn’t want them to scare off the girl I like (shes pretty young, doesnt date much, insanely smart, beautiful, and talented, VERY straight arrow) but I scared her off anyways. I can’t even bring myself to talk to her anymore. I hate everything.

Keto Pills: Why I’m Highly Skeptical

There are a dizzying number of keto pills on the market now. They promise easy weight loss, increased energy, and the benefits of ketosis without the pesky following-a-strict-diet part.

As savvy MDA readers, you know that optimal health never comes in a bottle. You also know that I’m a proponent of wise supplementation to support a Primal diet and lifestyle when appropriate. I’ve said before that I think exogenous ketones can be useful in specific circumstances, though they’re never necessary for success.

The question at hand is whether keto pills are likely to offer any benefit or if they’re a waste of money. I focused on pills that seem to be popular on Google searches and Amazon—ones with names like Ultra Fast Keto Boost, Super Fast Keto Boost, Keto Burn Xtreme, Instant Keto, and Keto Slim Rx. (My Amazon search history is shot now. This is the sacrifice I make for my readers.)

First Impressions: Are Keto Pills a Scam?

My first impressions weren’t positive—let’s just say that.

These products are being sold as diet or weight management pills. Their descriptions strongly imply, or sometimes state outright, that the pills will help you lose weight and “enjoy a slim and fit physique.” Most of the claims center on the general promise that being in ketosis causes you to burn fat and, by extension, lose weight (it doesn’t necessarily), and that their products will help keep you in ketosis (a claim I’ll investigate below).

The biggest red flag was when I noticed how many Amazon customers were trying to find the keto pill featured on the TV show Shark Tank. This was news to me, so I did some digging. Apparently there was a popular scam a while back wherein sellers claimed that their keto pills appeared on Shark Tank, and the sharks went wild for them. You didn’t miss anything. This never happened.

Only one product that I looked at—Keto Burn Xtreme sold by Advanced Life Science—still had that on their Amazon page as of December, 2019. It seems like some of the other products might have been falsely advertising this in the past based on older reviews and questions, though.

So it wasn’t looking good off the bat, but I’m an open-minded guy. Bad marketing doesn’t necessarily mean an ineffective product. Sure, the Amazon reviews for these pills are pretty negative overall, but maybe people just aren’t giving them a fair chance? Some folks like them, after all. Let’s try to be objective here.

Do These Keto Pills Contain Ketone Bodies?

Assuming you can trust the labels: Yes.

Exogenous ketones come in two forms: ketone salts and ketone esters. Ketone salts in commercial products are the ketone body beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) bound to a salt. Ketone esters are ketone bodies bound to alcohol.

All the keto pills contain ketone salts because they are easier and less expensive to manufacture than esters. On the label they’ll list BHB bound to minerals, such as “calcium beta-hydroxybutyrate” and “magnesium beta-hydroxybutyrate.”

Do the Pills Contain Enough BHB to Be Effective?

Short answer: No, not likely.

A keto pill might “work” because it successfully raises blood ketone levels or because it brings about a desired outcome such as weight loss or improved athletic performance. In any case, keto pills are unlikely to hit the mark, but I’ll get to that.

Both ketone salts and esters raise blood ketone levels, but esters are considerably more effective. In laboratory studies, even large doses of ketone salts usually yield blood ketone levels to between 0.5 and 1.0 mmol/L. That’s enough to qualify as being in ketosis, but it’s not a knock-your-socks-off result by any means. It’s what you’d expected from following a standard keto diet. Still, plenty of people notice that they have more energy and decreased appetite in this range.

It’s probably not enough to profoundly affect certain health markers or athletic performance. For example, a panel of respected exogenous ketone researchers agreed that blood ketone concentrations in excess of 2.0 mmol/L are needed to boost athletic performance. Ketone esters can get you there, which is why most studies demonstrating the efficacy of exogenous ketones use esters. Studies using ketone salts yield decidedly more mixed results.

How Much BHB Salt Is Needed to Be Effective?

There is no agreed upon minimally effective dose for BHB salt. However, let’s use some laboratory studies as a reference point:

In this paper, Study 1, participants received about 24 grams of BHB, and their average blood ketone levels peaked at 1.0 mmol/L.

In this study, researchers gave participants 11.7 grams of BHB prior to exercise and then a second dose 45 minutes later during exercise. Blood ketones averaged 0.6 ± 0.3 mmol/L.

These researchers gave participants two doses of 18.5 grams BHB, which they noted was 60% more than the standard dose recommended by the manufacturer, prior to exercise. Blood ketones measured 0.33 ± 0.16 mmol/L prior to exercise and 0.44 ± 0.15 mmol/L at the end of exercise about an hour later.

Finally, these participants ingested 0.3g/kg of BHB, which would be about 24 grams for a 175-pound individual. Blood ketone levels peaked below 1.0 mmol/L.

How Do Keto Pills Measure Up?

Answer: Badly

Of the keto pills I looked at, the highest dose of BHB I saw per serving was 1000 mg, or 1 gram, in Ultra Fast Keto Boost Pro.

It turns out that many of the products contain the same BHB product, goBHB®. For example, Ultra Fast Keto Boost, Insta Keto, Keto Burn Xtreme, and Keto Slim Rx* sold on Amazon by nutra4health LLC are all the same goBHB blend at different price points ($19.95 – $39.95 for 30 servings). Super Fast Keto Boost and Ultra Fast Keto Boost—same thing. Per serving, goBHB contains 800 mg of BHB.

(*This is not to be confused with the other Keto Slim Rx product on Amazon that doesn’t disclose its ingredients but does promise you can “achieve your dream body” and “skyrocket your ketosis!!”)

Many pills contain even less than that. Pure Keto Boost and Instant Pure Keto list 800 mg of another blend that includes BHB salts plus other ingredients, so less total BHB. Others I checked out contained 700 mg or less.

I’m extremely dubious that 800 or even 1000 mg would meaningfully boost blood ketone levels. This is a mere fraction of the dose used in research. If the researchers could give 1 gram of BHB instead of 12 grams or more and still get a measurable effect, they would. Plus, reputable brands of exogenous ketones such as Perfect Keto and KetoCaNa offer 11.4 and 11.7 grams of BHB per serving, respectively.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that none of the Amazon reviews I read for any of these products mentioned that the reviewer had tested their blood ketones and saw a rise after taking the pills. (And I read a lot of reviews. Too many.)

Can Ketone Pills Make You Lose Weight?

Answer: No.

These pills claim that they’ll put you in ketosis, which will melt away body fat. Unfortunately, being in ketosis does not guarantee that you’ll burn body fat. You lose weight on a keto diet they same way you do on any other diet: by expending more energy than you ingest.

That said, it’s fair to say that ketosis is an advantaged state for weight loss. Ketones both suppress appetite and increase energy, meaning it’s easier to eat less and move more when in ketosis. Ketones are also anti-inflammatory and they improve blood glucose regulation. These both contribute to having a healthier metabolism so you trend toward your ideal body weight with less resistance.

If these pills actually support ketosis, which I doubt, their main benefit would probably be appetite suppression, not increased fat burning per se, as they imply. Anyway, the sellers frequently state that these should be used in conjunction with a low-carb or keto lifestyle to be beneficial. Thus, even if someone loses weight while taking them, it would be impossible to attribute it to the pills directly.

The Verdict

It’s obvious what I think: Save your money.

If you want to be in ketosis, drop your carbs, play around with intermittent fasting, or just go do a hard workout and wait to eat until W.H.E.N. (when hunger ensues naturally).

The first time I ever heard about CBD oil was on a podcast. Then I saw it on a drink menu. Soon it showed up on my favorite website, and as an add-on at my favorite matcha place. It reached the hands of my favorite Instagram influencers, and appeared as a new ingredient in my beauty products. So what is CBD, exactly?

It’s advertised as a miracle oil derived from hemp. When applied topically it’s meant to relieve pain. When you vape it, eat it, drink it, or droplet it into your mouth, it reportedly can help treat epileptic seizures, manage anxiety, chill you out or aid in going to sleep. Unlike marijuana, CBD doesn’t get you high. Some swear by its effects, but recently, there has been pushback against it. Some people have even called it “snake oil.” So does it actually work? I had to try.

First things first, I live in Los Angeles. The CBD trend hit both New York and LA, hard. It’s fairly easy to get your hands on CBD oil here — whether you’re popping into Moon Juice, Whole Foods, or even Urban Outfitters. Plus, this is 2019. You can order almost anything online.

Secondly, I have terrible anxiety. I think it is one of my defining characteristics (unfortunately). I am prone to anxiety attacks and I do take a prescribed medication when they become overwhelming. However, I tend to vibrate with nerves most of the time anyway (fun!). I have been trying to combat them with yoga and therapy, but taking an oil every day sounds like a faster fix (or a potential disaster), and at this point in my life I am game for anything!

Lastly, I don’t burn, bro. I don’t 420 blaze it. I’m high on life, baby! No judgement to anyone at all, I just don’t smoke weed. So I would like to reiterate, although CBD is a cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant, it is non-psychoactive and cannot get you high. I repeat, it is not THC. It will not get you high. Dad, are you listening?

I decided to start with Charlotte’s Web, the CBD oil brand I had heard about first on that podcast. I looked them up online and was absolutely shook by the prices of their tinctures. The most expensive one retails for $275 and the cheapest that I could find was $99 (Now they offer a $39.99 option, but they didn’t at the time). So, that’s one thing about most reputable CBD tinctures, they’re not cheap. Luckily, the next day I happened to be shopping at Bristol Farms (a California-based supermarket) and found some on sale for $60.

The brand offers various dosages, so as a first-timer I started with the lowest offered, which is their “Full Strength CDB Oil.” The bottle offers 6.65 milligrams of CBD per milliliter. The flavor was olive oil (although they do offer a Mint Chocolate version online).

I had high hopes, but reader, I could not get past the taste. I am very sensitive to flavors, which is great for some things (like taste-testing Pringles) and bad for others I suppose. I could have tried mint, but honestly, I hate artificial mint flavoring. I abandoned this one after a few days despite the brand’s suggestion that I could put it in something like a smoothie, coffee or yogurt.

Also, I didn’t feel like it was doing anything to me! I had read that consistency is key, but I wanted to be consistent with something that didn’t make me gag when I smelled it — which honestly made me feel more anxious! Apparently, this product has worked for a lot of people. Great news for them! But it’s not for me.

While on my quest to find something tasty that I could take daily, I stopped by Moon Juice — which offers juices as well as coffees and matchas with adaptogenic “dusts.” My local shop offers CBD as a beverage add-in. The brand is still Charlotte’s Web, but they only offer the highest dosage.

I decided “what the heck” and ordered a CBD-infused iced matcha, hoping the flavor of the tea would conceal the olive oil taste. And it did! Not only was the drink tasty as always (I love Moon Juice and am not being paid to say this) but it made this warm feeling spread through my body like a non-sleepy calm, and this was only a single dose. But I wondered if it might just be a placebo effect. Was I just imagining this? Or had something changed?

After some light Googling, I found that the original dosage I had been taking wasn’t high enough. Apparently, the right dosage for your body is a total Goldilocks situation. You may have to try out a few different amounts before you get it just right. I wasn’t imagining things. The higher dosage actually helped.

Soon after, I was able to try a CBD oil tincture from another brand. Our editor-in-chief suggested I try Hawaiian Choice CBD oil, which she'd heard about through a former colleague in Hawaii whose husband launched the company. Their products come in a spray bottle. Each spray delivers 10 milligrams, and the company advises users take one to three sprays and hold it under their tongue for 30 seconds before swallowing. The bottle is expensive — $99, but it’s also flavored with passionfruit, pineapple, noni (a Polynesian fruit), and Big Island honey. Plus, it has a higher dosage than the first Charlotte’s Web product that I tried.

The particular tincture I tried is labeled “Active,” and the bottle says it’s meant to help with exercise and appetite control. It did nothing for my appetite (nor did I want it to) but the flavor situation here is a game changer. It tastes like candy. It also seemed to impact my anxiety levels in a major way. It worked!

After taking this brand’s oil consistently, I’ve noticed that I feel mellowed. Not subdued, mellowed. Now when I wake up and drink a big glass of water and take my allergy pills and my gummy vitamins, I gleefully squirt this CBD oil into my mouth and it helps me to have a more focused, less anxiety-brained morning. It’s not like the anxiety isn’t there, it’s just much quieter and doesn’t radiate through my body. That warm feeling that I got from taking a higher dose is there, and when it’s at its most powerful in my system, I feel looser inside my body (a positive feeling, I swear).

One morning I forgot to take some, and by mid-afternoon I felt that little pit of dread that always seems to well up inside of me shrieking again!

At first, I was confused as to why I needed to leave it under my tongue. Why not just swallow it? But apparently leaving the oil under your tongue has surprising absorption benefits.

According to marijuana education website Nice Paper, “Humans are made of water. Most CBD tinctures are made of oil. Your body is hydrophilic and CBD tinctures are the opposite (hydrophobic, remember, this is a chemistry class)… Of all the ‘oral’ methods [sic] this is one of the better ways to absorb CBD.”

In my research I had seen that CBD can also be applied topically. It’s especially healing for anyone with joint pain and inflammation, as well for people who suffer from migraines. I came across a Sagely Natural’s “Relief & Recovery Headache Roll-On” one day while I was shopping at Urban Outfitters. As someone who sits in front of a computer eight hours a day, I am prone to headaches. I bought it.

Now when I do something like forget to take my tincture, want to dose up because I am feeling more anxious than usual, or feel pain in my body, I have armed myself with a battery of CBD products that I genuinely feel work and make me feel less anxious and achy.

Here are some other things I learned as I researched CBD and my own issues:

The organic beverage company Vybes makes flavored-drinks that include 15 milligrams of CBD. I have been able to find them at quite a few trendy health food shops in LA, New York, San Francisco, and Chicago. I am a big fan of Buddha Teas, which makes various CBD-infused teas that come in convenient little tea bags that I have started drinking most mornings, and they give my dosage a cozy little boost.

In a recent New York Times op-ed, psychiatrist Richard A. Friedman wrote that “CBD looks more like an expensive placebo than a panacea,” citing a 2017 study in the Journal of the American Medical Asscociation that found that only 26 out of 84 samples of CBD products purchased online contained the amount of CBD advertised on their labels.
