i'll start with some classics i love! sorry this turned out so long xd

the jane austen one is just gorgeous with all the gold accents. the right one is the new finnish cover for little women and i bought that version specifically because of the cover art.

now what i look for in a book cover is not just the graphic design but also how it feels under your fingertips. im probably missing some terminology here, but the little women one feels almost like coarse and stiff fabric when you touch it? i also love it when the covers feel like heavier paper instead of plastic. super glossy plastic covers feel awful on the nails.

speaking of gloss... you cant see it from these pictures but both of these covers have a glossy finish on the details! on the left it's on the pomegranate seeds and on the right it's on the bird. i think it's a nice subtle way to highlight the important bits of the cover and elevate the look a little, especially in these examples where the covers are pretty simplistic. (even tho simple isnt bad i think these covers are brilliant and work super well, i dont like it when there's too many elements in a cover.)

now these ones... they're not the ugliest covers ever but i do want to talk about them because im in the middle of reading the vampire lestat and have to look at it every night. they fit the vibes of the books and i know they're older covers so there were different design trends then but man oh man... maybe it's the huge V and vampire chronicles thing that bothers me? it sort of clogs up the cover, there's no breathing room. too many elements !! also in general i just dont like the photos they've chosen for these

when i see the cover art on other versions of the books it makes me sad i have these!! like look at these:

like the ones on the right dont have much going on with them but i love them. they're effective. the font is so bold you can kinda let it speak for itself.

sorry this has totally turned into a iwtv cover yap at this point but i do want to show the finnish covers for these books. they're not the best covers i've ever seen but i am fond of them and i do like them better than those first english covers i talked about (sorry for the bad quality, these are about the only pics i could find online)

i think the vibes here are a bit milder than on the english versions, a little less on the nose gothic? but i do love the red !! i think it fits the books because uknow, blood, and is also very very eye-catching. i would remove the skull on they eyes tho because i think it looks ridiculous xd and idk if im in love with the font but i guess they were going for that ink on parchment paper look

idk how to conclude any of this and i dont usually add anything to reblogs etc etc but i love book covers and i often go to book stores just to look and touch the covers

Gellers babies are ready for the cold weather. As am I. Delilah has some objections but Dillas never seen the seasons change and hes excited for snow. Hes adjusting well to the modern era and a new family.

After coming to terms with his sudden blast into the future and learning that murdering your kingdom rivals is frowned upon Omar has begins to adjust to the modern world. He says ‘thanks I hate it.’ (So many new foods are worth the trouble tho.)

The Chi crew: The glasses theyre wearing are (mostly) for intel/communication.

Gadget is the big boss lady of the Chi crew. She has a bit of a gamer temper while working where she will seem like shes all fun and games but she will throw a controller or punch a hole in the wall... When shes not busy she spends her time in Pjs and a good book.

Anisos is perfectionist inventor. He made his own Porygon named Two (dont ask what happened to ‘One’), He introduced Two to a dubious disk and Two not wanting to disappoint It’s creator agreed to use it but it really scrambled poor Two up. Anisos feels endlessly guilty about it and vows to care for and protect Two until he cant anymore. (Two is actually significantly stronger than Anisos, but its the thought that counts.)

Tripwire is a sensitive little android. After Its last upgrade Its personality might have gotten a little messy but the power and intelligence boost was worth it (for Its job... maybe not so much for Itself). Trip is a little twitchy and often repeats Itself but is a kind droid, It sticks close to The Creator (Anisos) despite Anisos’ insistence It can do as It pleases and encourages independence.

Trip before the disk^ It replaced It’s legs because theyre lighter now and its easier to float. It barely ever walks anymore.

Deep Blue is a mute (not really) member of the crew... who also works in Deoxys’ lab, Dex thinks hes highly suspicious but he gets his work done without issue so he just keeps an eye out and lets him be. Because hes quiet others tend to enjoy his placid company not realizing he likes to gather info and will use it against anyone he must. Probably the most ruthless of the Chi gang.

Grey is a bit of an over achiever and thinks Gadget isnt that great of a boss so is gunning for her position. Shes very organized but super inflexible in her thinking which puts her at odds with some of her contemporaries. She has a particularly hard time dealing with Trip whos the hottest of messes.

THESE GUYS EXIST.... IDK if im satisfyied with their design... WIP. Maybe. Or I’ll get over it. Bugsy, Diplo, Cross and Uda--v

Mosaic hates being on Psi division because Father Mistletoe and Perma are three crazy weirdos and Parallax stole the only other fun crewmate (Decibel) and she cant even complain about it because Father will absolutely kick her ass. He dont care. If only she can be in Kappas crew.

He didnt make it but he bought his s/o a music box and played around with it a little bit so it plays his songs for them.

I dont think so. He's actually a pretty open book and doesnt like to keep secrets from his s/o. Theyre a team after all.

Independence: what type of lover are they? Clingy or carefree?

Carefree. He loves to feel free more than anything and as long as you give him space, he will always come back to you and stay loyal.

Jealous: are they a jealous person?

Hes the funny kind of jealous that, in a sense, he just cracks jokes and swings an arm around his s/o when he sees someone try to hit on you.

Kindness: how far would they go for their s/o? Ride or die kind of thing?

Depends on how serious he is with them. If he sees a future, he'd do close to anything for and with them.

Love: what's their love type?

Quality time. As mentioned above, he loves to just be free and by himself, which is rare in itself, so when he finds time and spends it with you instead of alone, that's his way of showing love.

Mouth: where's their favorite place to kiss?

Neck. He's very playful and just loves to blow kisses right there; bonus points if you laugh because it tickles.

Oh yes. Again, theyre a team and teams stick together. He doesnt see the point in hiding much of his life and expects the same in return.

How much he sometimes worries about his career. He does still get nerve wrecked and thinks he might not last much longer in the industry

Its your typical high school romance until all of a sudden you stand in front of the altar and exchange your vows. It takes a while for him to realize how serious things get

Someone very confident and self aware. Someone adventurous and light hearted. Someone as carefree as him who just goes with the flow and doesnt let anyone or anything dictate their life.

Oh yes he has. Much like Ren, he has a wild history of being with the ladies, though his busy life and need for freedom have ruined many of them.

Baseball! It's his favorite sport and he plays it when he has time.

He dashes out flirtations like its nothing but gets shy and flustered when someone does it to him.

Physically its your smile because he loves to see you happy. Mentally it's your love for life and you just live it to the fullest. Very inspiring

Luna was very old fashion and stuff while celestia was able to keep up with the times. and we see her goofy. Celestia is the silly goofy sister who likes to fuck around.

Audience Analysis Blog #6: Interpreting and Decoding Mass Media Texts

Over the past few blogs, I have talked about how our roles as audience members go from individuals who simply view selected content to ratings contributors to being active users of media. There is another I would add to the list in the form of interpreters and decoders. Now, I bet you are all wondering what does figuring out codes have anything to do with how we view content. For one thing, it is related to our opinions as we use them to make our interpretations of what content that people view. We wonder about audiences’ acknowledgements in media content. If there are similarities, what are the patterns of audiences when it comes to reactions. What I am going to talk about is audience interpretations in media as several terms would be explained such as semiotics, signs, ideology and encoding / decoding.

To start off, let us define semiotics as it is “the systematic study of signs and their significance in society.” (Sullivan, pp 168) Understanding semiotics helps us learn about interpretation in the process of communicating ideas. Ferdinand de Saussure, a French linguist, was a prominent figure in semiotics as he developed an interest in language’s building blocks and meaning. He explained the concepts of signs as a key to communication among people. No matter what the text is like, whether it is words, images or acts, signs are essential in communication between at least two people. Signs come in different forms such as simple or straightforward, like this blog for instance, or complex, like the code or programming / web design language to create the blog. Signs can be demonstrated as things that they are not. They play a role as markers that have important information about a referred object or experience. Signs consist of two elements: the signifier, the sign’s form and the signified, the signifier’s representation.

Ideology is a concept that I would like to talk a little bit about as it shares a connection with mass media. When people think of ideology, they would think of it as a set of beliefs and opinions that are shared on the basis of social and / or political views. Scholars would study ideology in figuring out how meaning and power intersect and attempt to understand the meaning of people’s ways. In the 1930s, the Frankfurt School, a research group that consisted of German scholars, was formed to examine the media’s role from the view of Marxism. They pointed out that the media was responsible in convincing citizens into accepting the economic status quo. (Sullivan, 170) They coined the term ‘culture industry’ as it is defined as the development of dominant ideologies. One example of ideology is news sites. Within the past four years, there have been debates on whether the news is trying to push a certain agenda, for example, liberal vs conservative. There are news sites out there that try to balance sides, giving them equal coverage however, there are some that focus on one particular political side. For example, the left would have NPR and Mother Jones while the right would have Fox News and Breitbart.

The next thing is the discussion of encoding and decoding messages. In an essay, Stuart Hall, discusses the encoding and decoding processes in a communication exchange. The processes are seen as moments in how intervention of a text’s meaning was conveyed, resulting in power relations. Encoding the message is the first determining moment as the message is created by someone such as a journalist, a podcaster, or in this case, a blogger. The content’s creator is responsible for putting out a text that audiences would understand. In a case, such as television news, a ‘story’ is formed through an event before it can go through the process of being a communicative event. This results in language systems, professional codes of production and conventions of message production working together. (Sullivan, 172) When the news is broadcast, standard practices occur in determining what events would be considered news, along with how to present them to audiences.

In decoding, audience members utilize cognitive and associative resources in deconstructing a message while at the same time, be acknowledged of structures with the likes of language and conventions in culture. (Sullivan, 172) For the audience to be affected by a text or message, they need to decode it. In other words, after receiving an encoded message, the audience offer their own unique interpretations from their contexts.

One key aspect in communication and our media experiences is intertextuality. In this concept, we take experiences and what we know about media texts and utilize them in our viewing of our film and television programs. We connect texts such as films, TV shows, video games, books and connect them with other media. Sullivan states that “we create meanings out of our media universe by relating specific messages to others that we have seen or heard.” (193) Intertextuality is everywhere in today’s media, for example, when I am on Facebook, I would spot pictures of movies that would offer their own spin on what is going on in the world. There are several examples of intertextuality in today’s TV shows and movies as The CW have several TV shows that are based on comic books, such as The Flash and Riverdale, along with popular fictional character like Nancy Drew. In terms of movies, during the summer, blockbusters would be shown as some would be based on comic books, reboots of series, etc.

At this point, you are probably thinking ‘those terms are nice but why are they related to mass media and our role as an audience?’ The answer be sound complex without these terms, but they are worth learning about. Everyday, we consume a good amount of content and media. Some of us would start our day watching the news and / or sports. During the day, we would go on social media, listen to music or even stream our favourite TV shows. What we do not realize is the number of texts and messages that we are exposed to. When we see headlines in the news or sports, we become enticed to click on the links to help decode the messages and understand what is going on. However, not all links to news sites are reliable. Some sites try to frame certain stories in an effort for audiences to click and offer their own spin on the story. One site that I visit often is Palmer Report, a blog that focuses on political stories and how they decode what the media is showing. One thing that the site would explain is how the media would insist that Trump’s fanbase was everything. They wanted the base front and center so people would tune in to get a rise. Palmer explained why the base is irrelevant to his re-election chances. Why am I talking about this? Because I wanted to give out an example of how news sites would encode messages to present to the mass audience while an alternative news site like Palmer Report helps the same audience decode the message. One example of Palmer Report decoding a message is the rumor of Trump possibly running in 2024. https://www.palmerreport.com/analysis/no-donald-trump-isnt-running-in-2024/34369/ Originally, one of Trump’s former campaign members Steve Bannon suggested that he could run in 2024, causing the media to go into a frenzy.

Another example of how we use signs and attempt to decode messages is how we figure out certain things in the form of guessing. We all play games in which we try to guess something on the basis of clues. The clues are considered signs and we use the signifiers and the signified to determine what the clues mean as well as attempt to decode the message or guess what that thing is that we are trying to identify. Although I do not watch the show, I would like to use the reality series, The Masked Singer, as an example as it relates to this. In the program, a celebrity puts on an outrageous costume and sings, all while a group of panelists try to determine who that person is. There is a clue video to help the panelists guess who is really behind the mask. What I am going to show is a sample of the show from the first season with the performances, clues and reveal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7r3seBU9VE The reason for me showing this is to demonstrate how different people (the panelists) offer their own interpretations (or decoding) into who could be the performer with the clues (or signs) that are provided.

One other thing that would be worth talking about is the Showtime television series, Dexter. In case you have never heard of the series, it is a crime drama that ran from 2006 to 2013 and starred Michael C. Hall as the title character, a forensic technician for the Miami police department who specializes in blood strain analysis. He leads a double life as a vigilante serial killer who hunts down other serial killers. The show gained notoriety for its controversial ending. How it connects with the blog’s topic is how audiences examine the text and offers their own take on the show and its premise. Dexter uses the Code of Harry to see criminals who managed to slip through the cracks of the legal system. If they meet the code, then they will be punished. (Granelli, pp 5056) Critics have often questioned the moral complexity of the show and the effect it has on an audience. Granelli explained that the show causes the audience to “question concepts inherent to the genre.” (5057) Psychologists have examined the way audiences have interpreted texts, especially media that demonstrates morally reprehensible actions. Shows like Dexter, who tend to play the anti-hero are nothing new as works such as Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul and Sons of Anarchy have demonstrated codes that break morally of everyday citizens. I always felt that these shows are popular because the main characters break away from the ideologies and codes of morality and do what they can to obtain their own personal goals. In a study by Granelli, participants believe that Dexter Morgan is one of four things: 1) A justified vigilante in an ‘eye for an eye’ justice 2) Psychological puzzle that demonstrates human complexity. You do not always know who people really are 3) Gratuitous murder as it glorifies murder and 4) Deviant escapism as people consider it to be stirring, emotional and entertaining. I added this in the blog because of how media, one that depicts over-the-top violence, creates different reactions for viewers and allows them to offer unique opinions on certain codes and moralities. The last two things on the list, gratuitous murder and deviant escapism, shows people’s general opinions on some cable programs that have a certain amount of violence and explains that programs on certain networks are not for everyone while at the same time, these same programs are for people who do not like the restrictions of broadcast television in terms of content.

While this blog is a little long, I wanted to explain general terms that help in examining messages from the media and decoding them. Several examples were used to help explain interpreting and decoding signs, messages and texts better for audiences. In addition, many texts or messages can have several meanings, or be polysemic. Our roles as audience members help us understand certain messages and convey with our peers into figuring out what some texts really mean. We consume texts to become entertained and we do not realize that we do more than just watching our favourite content. Overtime, we view texts to understand their meanings and why we continue to watch.

and now he is a practicing healer and always sacrifices the best of his meal to apollo and changbinnie

I'm gonna hc that prayers to gods are like notifications because I can

so if ur like popular and gettin spammed u can turn them off/choose not to hear them

but changbin likes hearing them, and a lot of the time if he can help by doing smth small he will!!! ugh ur god could never (zeus stans cant relate)

there are ppl walking and standing about but none of them seem v concerned

changbin guesses lots of ppl fall down this mountain

he has to remember to make his blood appear red not gold and try to limp when he gets up (is that what happens when humans get injured? he doesnt know)

and to his luck

theres a voice behind him

a very familiar voice

hmmmmmmmmmmm who could it be?

"oh my god, are you ok?"

"y-yeah"

YIK THE VOICE BELONGS TO A VERY CUTE MORTAL

changbin can almost hear minho laughing at him from olympus

the boy has soft brown hair and little dots across his cheeks and big doe eyes and he offers changbin his hand (what is changbin gonna do? say no?)

"are u alright? looked like a pretty bad fall"

"no, I'm ok!!! just got a lil scratched up," changbin says

"oh no!!! ur cuts could become infected if u dont bandage them!!!! here I'm a healer lemme wrap them up for u ok"

changbin is. SHAKING

so the boy leads changbin away, through the dusty streets

3 important things occur: 1. changbin finds out his name is felix, 2. felix doesnt let go of changbins hand, and 3. changbin discovers felix is taller than his mortal form

felix bandages him up, and hands him a mug of wine

it's nice; changbin doesnt often indulge in mortal food and drink, bc he doesnt need it

they talk!!!

felix is so friendly and welcoming changbin forgets where he is for a hot minute

and felix is just. Intrigued. (he knows practically everyone in the village; maybe changbin's a traveler? hes also a lil confused by the fact that changbin shares the name of the god he prays to every night but those things happen n what can ye do)

so felix asks where changbins from, and hes a traveler!!!! that makes sense!!!

"do u have a place to stay? do you know how long ur staying for?"

"nope and nope!!!"

so felix does the obvious thing: "u can stay with me!!"

and yeah this is a guy he met twenty minutes ago so maybe that's not the safest thing to ever happen

but hes also heard stories abt ppl who refused to offer hospitality to ppl who were gods in disguise and met Unfortunate Ends, and changbin is also sweet and handsome and felix thinks this couldnt end too badly, right?

so changbin stays, and he looks around for people he could pair up with felix

the boy wants a bf and changbin is going to get him a bf!!! it's the least felix deserves

but with every time felix cooks him breakfast, every time he brings changbin along with him to the market, with every time the boy smiles, the more changbin wants that bf to be him

felix plays the lyre, and sometimes he sings along with it too

(the first time changbin found this out it was an accident; felix'd been practicing outside so he wouldnt disturb the peace but changbin had heard through the ajar window and for a second thought it was apollo)

every time felix's small tiny adorable little hands start absentmindedly playing at the strings of his lyre, changbin has to stop whatever hes doing to be able to hear

whipped culture if u ask me

the songs felix sings are all lovely; some are light and cheerful and others are a little darker, sadder, lonelier, and with each one of the latter that felix plays changbin gets the urge to hold him

and one day he does!!!!!!

it's a darker, sadder, lonelier song day, changbin can tell it from the start

felix acts as lively as ever though, smiles as bright as ever (it's still beautiful)

but felix makes a fire in his fireplace that night and curls up, the light flickering across his face, and he looks so uncharacteristically small that changbin walks right over to him and Gathers Him tf Up in those arms

"hey, what's wrong"

"omg nothing haha"

but changbin is Not Having It, and all he has to do is give felix that look before felix sighs, completely relaxing into changbins arms

"just ,,, kinda feel alone rn"

and then he Panicc "omg that sounded so rude I mean I dont feel alone alone I have u ofc but I mean in a romantic sense of the word I just wan some1 to hold me and never let go u know and"

he takes a deep breath and cups felix's face tilting it up so their eyes meet and felix stops his rambling

"I'd never let go, if you asked me not to"

the good thing abt bein a god is if cb gets rejected now he can just yeet himself right back onto olympus and shut out all his emotions!!

but hes still so nervous for felix's response somehow bc this has grown to be important to him

but!!! turns out!!!!! he has Nothing to Be Nervous About!!!!!

felix's face almost splits with the force of his smile, and he looks so happy that changbin's heart is melting in his chest, and he whispers "I'd like that," before they both move at the same time and then they're kissing

when they break apart, foreheads leaning together, changbin whispers into the space between them "I'm a god, you know. I'm your changbin, the one you've been talking to since jisung got sick. I'm immortal,"

and felix looks at him, looks at the now-dying firelight reflecting back at him in changbins beautiful eyes. it doesnt seem to matter, not right now.

"are you gonna break my heart?" felix asks, and he kind of knows the answer

but changbin takes his hands and says so earnestly "I'm gonna try my best not to" and that's enough for felix
