These melt-in-your-mouth Serbian Walnut Cookies are also known as Vanilice and were quite the surprise to me.  When I first saw the recipe, I thought it was just another butter cookie, but the toasted ground walnuts give these cookies quite a boost.  While in the West we use pecans because they are indigenous to the Americas, walnuts are used in the Balkans because they are plentiful.  Not fond of walnuts? Use pecans or any other nut of your choice. The dough is really easy to roll and a joy to work with.  I took liberties with the apricot preserves which are also customary.  I wanted to boost the flavor of the jam and did so by adding a bit of white balsamic vinegar along with some gelatin to tighten it.  The cookies are best made days ahead so the flavor matures.  While these cookies are wonderful sandwiched, they are also quite good on their own. Usually shown finished in powdered sugar, I found they are even better without.  The flavor of the cookie and the jam come through much better.   Other "nutty" cookies you might enjoy are Germany's beloved Zimtsterne, Italy's famous Baci di Dama and America's own Pecan Bars. Why these are sooooo easy to love These are so easy to make. The cookies are of the shortbread type. European cookies usually have less ingredients than many American cookies and these are no exception. The dough is easy to work with and rolls out right from the mixer. Making the cookies a few days ahead allows the flavors to meld. The cut out, unbaked cookies can be frozen and baked when needed. Recipe Ingredients Apricot Filling FRONT ROW: Gelatin, cider vinegar BACK ROW: Apricot preserves Serbian walnut cookies FRONT ROW: Unsalted butter MIDDLE ROW: Egg yolk, granulated sugar, vanilla BACK ROW: All-purpose flour, walnuts Key Ingredients The walnuts or pecans, if using need to be toasted for the best flavor. Toasting any nut will bring out the best in them. The unsalted butter should be softened to cream well with the sugar. The reason I don't use the term room temperature because Alaska most likely has a colder room temp than say, New Mexico. The ideal temp for the butter is 72°F to 75°F. I have seen colder, lower temperatures suggested but the butter doesn't cream as well - it looks more like sand. There is an post you might enjoy on American Butter vs. European Butter. McCormick's Imitation Vanilla is fine here as the nuts take over the taste. See my post on The Making of Vanilla for an indepth discussion of pure vs. imitation. Be sure to see the recipe card below for the exact ingredients & instructions. Step by Step Instructions Step 1. Place the apricot preserves in the bowl of a processor. Step 2. Process until smooth. Step 3. Transfer to a small saucepan and bring to a simmer. Step 4. Add the gelatin to the vinegar in a very, very small bowl while the preserves are coming to a simmer. When the preserves are ready, take the gelatin out of the bowl. It will be a solid mass as in the picture. Tear it into small about 6 pieces and put them in the hot preserves immediately where they will melt. There is no need to liquify them first. Whisk them in and cool. Step 5. Transfer the filling to a small container and refrigerate. Step 6. Place the toasted nuts and flour in a processor bowl. Step 7. Process until the nuts are so finely chopped they are as one with the flour. Step 8. Place the softened butter and sugar in the bowl of a mixer. Step 9. Cream the butter and sugar until light. Step 10. Add the vanilla and egg yolk. Step 11. Beat on medium to bring everything together. Step 11. Add the flour. Step 13. Mix the dough until it comes together completely. Step 14. Place it on a large piece of waxed paper and shape it into a round. Step 15. Place a second piece of paper on top and indent the dough with a rolling pin 4 or 5 times. Step 16. Roll the dough about 3/8" thick between the paper. Remove the top piece of paper. Leaving the dough on the bottom piece of paper, cut 1 1/2" round cookies out.

Cut the cookies close together. Keeping the cookies on the bottom piece of waxed paper, transfer them to a baking sheet and freeze them hard. Pop them out and place on a parchment line baking sheet. Keeping the cookies on the bottom piece of waxed paper, transfer them to a baking sheet and freeze them hard. Pop them out and place on a parchment line baking sheet. Bake as directed. Stir the filling vigorously to smooth it out and place a dollop on the upturned bottom of each cookie. Step 19. Spread it out to within about 1/8"of the edge. Step 20. Place the top on each cookie. Recipe FAQS How so you get clean edges on cut out cookies? Place the dough between waxed paper. Roll it out as called for. Chill, but don't freeze the dough. Cut straight down with the cutter and don't twist it. Cut out all the cookies at once. Why do my cookies get out of shape? Because the dough is too soft. Cut the cookies out as in the question above. Leaving the cookies on the bottom piece of paper, transfer the whole thing to a baking sheet and freeze them until rock hard. Then simply, poke them out, place them on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake as called for. How do I keep my cut out cookies from spreading in the oven? First use a recipe meant for cut out cookies. These usually won't spread out of shape. My Painted Cookies, Murbteig Pastry or Shortbread Cookies are good examples. After following the freezing instructions above, make sure they go into the oven frozen. Expert Tips Always toast the nuts. Untoasted nuts just don't have the punch that a few minutes in the oven gives them. Make sure the nuts are completely cooled before using them. I generally toast the whole bag, re-bag it, mark it and put it in the freezer. That way, I don't have to wait for them. We used to toast 30# boxes of nuts at a time at the bakery and freeze them. Always make sure if the nuts are to be finely ground, that flour or sugar is put in the processor with them so they don't turn into a paste - unless of course you are making a nut butter. Make sure the cookies go into the oven very cold or frozen. Although I don't believe these would go out of shape, I do this with any cut out cookie. Place the apricot preserves in the bowl of a processor. Process until smooth. Dissolve the gelatin in the vinegar in a very small bowl. Heat the preserves just to a simmer. Remove from the heat. Tear the gelatin into about 6 pieces and immediately add it to the hot preserves. There is no need to liquify it first. The heat will do that. Wait for a minute or two until you can see the gelatin has liquified. Stir it into the preserves. Transfer to a small container and refrigerate until needed. Serbian Walnut CookiesPreheat the oven to 325°F. Line a couple of baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.Place the walnuts on a rimmed baking sheet and toast for 7 to 10 minuts until fragrant and slightly browned.

Cool completely. When cool, place the walnuts and flour in the bowl of a processor. Process until the nuts are finely ground and instinguishable. Set aside. Place the butter and sugar in the bowl of a mixer. Beat until light.Add the egg yolk and vanilla and beat to combine. Add the flour mixture and beat on low just until completely incorporated. The dough should be good to roll out but if it is too soft, refrigerate briefly. Do not let it get too cold or it will be hard to roll.Place the dough between two large pieces of waxed paper. Make 4 or 5 indentations and then roll the dough to abut 1/4" thick. With a 1 1/2" round cutter, cut the cookies out, keeping them close togetherRemove the top piece of waxed paper and, keeping the cookies on the bottom pieces of paper, transfer the whole thing to a baking sheet. Freeze until rock hard.When frozen, simply punch them out and place them on a cookie sheet about 5 across and 7 down. Refreeze if necessary.Bake for 15 to 17 minutes from the frozen state until lightly browned and firm. Cool completely. These can be stored in an airtight container before filling for up to a week. Dust the tops with more powdered sugar. Store in an airtight container for a week or 10 days. There is always an abundance of photos to guide you in the post above. As always, I recommend using a scale for accuracy and consistency.  Flour, in particular, is difficult to measure by volume.  For my recipes, I use 140 grams per cup of unsifted  all-purpose, bread or whole wheat flour and 125 grams of cake flour. Others may use different weights so use whatever they suggest. ______________________________________________________ Always toast the nuts. Summary: It's not that Y/n is hiding from the rest of the team, except that's exactly what she is doing. Wanda is determined to break through to her.

A/N: Ok, so I know a lot of writers (including me lol) have Wanda use Russian words for nicknames or as a substitute for Sokovian... but so Wanda and Natasha can each have their own nicknames for Y/n, I'm gonna use Serbian for Wanda! Since the Sokovian signs in AoU were written in Serbian Cryllic 🙃

Y/n sits in her room happily playing with origami animals and paper dolls. She doesn’t have any real toys since she never has time to go out and get them. After her training and time spent learning as much as she can about the Avengers and their enemies, by the time she is finished for the day, she desperately needs to drop.

So, when she is bigger or just dropped to an age not too young, she makes toys from the resources she has available to her: paper swiped from one of the offices.

Two and a half weeks have passed since Y/n joined the team, and the rest have barely seen her. She stays in her room, only coming out when its time to eat and train. Since that first day, they haven’t really seen her little. Only a few times has she ever come out smaller than 22. When she did, it was for training, and she was only 17.

She trains with Steve in the mornings, usually eats with the team, occasionally she will be in Tony’s lab to try on the suit he is making for her. Since her clothes can’t drop with her, he is making a suit that can.

The rest of Y/n’s spare time is spent dropping to smaller states. She stays in her room while she’s little. The team made it abundantly clear how they felt about having a kid around, so she keeps her distance.

It’s been working so far, so she just assumes its for the best.

At the moment, Y/n is dropped to 6. She is making her origami frog jump across the desk when a sweet scent hits her nose. She would know that smell from anywhere.

Cookies

Her tummy rumbles, and the smell is calling to her. She ponders if it is a good idea to leave her room like this, but ultimately her nose and tummy win out.

Y/n opens her door and pokes her head into the hallway. She looks both ways to see if anyone is around. The hallway is clear so she tiptoes out of her room, making her way towards the kitchen. At every corner, she checks to see if the coast is clear before tiptoeing out of hiding.

She continues this way until she reaches the kitchen.

In the same way as before, Y/n barely peaks around the corner and into the room. Her little eyes fall on Wanda pulling a tray full of cookies out of the oven.

The Sokovian has done this on purpose of course.

The idea came to Wanda last night, a way to try and lure her new teammate out of hiding. She remembers when she joined the team; she was treated much like Y/n was at the meeting. Granted she had entered their minds against their will, but all the same, she understood what it was like to join a group that wasn’t too thrilled to have you.

Wanda was determined to make sure Y/n felt welcome, and that she had a friend. This proved to be very difficult when the girl barely came out of her room.

Thus… cookies.

It’s a recipe her and her mother perfected back in Sokovia. She hasn’t really had many opportunities to use it since then, but she’s glad she has a good reason now.

She is pulling the tray out of the oven when she feels a pair of eyes on her. From her peripheral vision, she can see a very small girl poking half her face around the corner. Wanda smiles to herself.

Wanda purposefully turns her back to the girl to grab a spatula from a drawer beside her. This gives Y/n enough cover to quickly run from the doorway to behind the island in the kitchen.

As the Sokovian is transferring the cookies to a cooling rack, Y/n watches intently, only her forehead and eyes poking above the countertop.

Of course, Wanda knows the girl moved, but she decides to play along. After she places the last of the cookies on the cooling tray, she turns and jumps in feigned shock.

“Oh my goodness! Y/n, you scared me!”

The girl quickly ducks under the counter to hide from Wanda’s view.

“No no, its ok!” the witch recovers quickly, “I just didn’t see you there. You are quite sneaky.” Wanda waits for Y/n to feel comfortable enough to appear over the top of the counter, although very little of her body is visible over the countertop due to her height. “I was just baking some cookies, what brings you out to the kitchen?”

Wanda already knows the answer, but she is wanting to prompt Y/n into speaking for herself.

Little eyes shoot between the witch and the tray full of delicious treats. The smell of which is what drew her here to begin with.

“You came for a cookie?” Wanda asks and waits until the shy little girl nods yes. “Ok! You’re more than welcome to have a cookie!...... but we have to wait for them to cool down or they will burn your tongue.”

Y/n’s shoulders slump, but she nods anyway. Having to wait for cookies is way better than getting no cookies at all.

The girl moves to the counter right in front of the tray of cookies while Wanda tidies around the kitchen.

Once Wanda has finished picking up after herself, the cookies are almost cool enough to eat. She checks on Y/n, and the girl has not moved from her spot next to the cookies, patiently awaiting the permission to indulge in the sweet treats.

“Ok, the cookies are almost ready,” Wanda says to pull a very young Y/n’s attention, “would you like to get some milk for the cookies while we wait?”

Y/n looks up to the other woman tentatively, not sure what to do in this situation. Wanda said yes to her getting a cookie. Is milk too far? …too much to ask of her teammate.

The Sokovian seems to pick up on this and grants mercy on the poor thing.

“Well I know that I want some milk,” Wanda says pulling the carton out of the fridge. “I can pour you some too, while I have it out?” The sokovian waits for an answer, even though she’s pretty sure she can hear it.

After she gets a confirmation nod, Wanda smiles and gets to work.

The witch sets a small cup of milk on the counter along with a small plate containing one chocolate chip cookie.

Walking around to the stools, Wanda quickly realizes Y/n will probably need help to get on it, but she doesn’t want to push any boundaries. The girl previously stated that she doesn’t want help, so she just pats the top of the stool and watches as she jumps, wiggles and climbs until she is sitting on the top.

Wanda sits in the stool beside her, and they both quietly eat their cookies. Once Y/n has finished her cookie, she eyes the plate of cookies on the counter. Silently, the child glances up to Wanda gaining her attention. She then looks back at the cookies.

“Do you want another one?”

Y/n silently nods.

“Ok мала(little one),” Wanda pulls the plate closer for the child to grab a cookie, “but just one more. We’re gonna have dinner soon.”

Neither of them comments on Wanda’s use of the nickname. No words are exchanged at all. They just sit quietly together, and Wanda is perfectly happy with that.

Baby steps in the right direction are still steps in the right direction.

Today is just a quiet, lazy Saturday around the compound.

Wanda exits her bedroom and walks down the hall to the common area. She had planned to see if anyone wanted to watch sitcoms in the living room with her.

As she passes Y/n’s door, she comes to a stop.  The very loud little thoughts coming from the other side of the door have grabbed her attention. That was something Wanda picked up very early on. The younger Y/n drops, the louder her thoughts are. Its almost impossible for Wanda not to hear them.

That’s how she knows that Y/n is currently little in her room.

The witch now has a better way to spend her afternoon.

“Oh goodness,” Wanda says a bit loudly to ensure she is heard by the girl, “I’m about to bake a whole bunch of cookies, if only I had someone to help me.” Fake distress lays thick on her voice. She’s hoping to lure the girl out again, only this time for an activity that will require a bit more interaction.

By Y/n’s thoughts, Wanda knows the girl is definitely thinking about it. While she ponders, the sokovian travels down the hall to the kitchen where she gathers all the ingredients and tools she needs.

Wanda turns to find Y/n poking her head out the same way she did last week when she made the first batch of cookies. The girl appears to be about the same size as then too, somewhere between 5 and 6.

“Y/n!” Wanda smiles brightly, “I’m so glad you’re here! I was just about to make some cookies, and I could really use some help. Would you like to help me make some cookies?” The enthusiasm in her tone is a bit much, but she just wants to appear as inviting as possible so Y/n can feel at ease.

The child’s mouth curves into a small smile as she nods. She takes very tentative steps until she is standing next to Wanda. The Sokovian grabs two aprons from the hooks on the pantry door. She puts one on herself, before adjusting the straps on the other to fit the child… as well as an apron for adults can fit a child.

“Let’s get this on to keep you clean,” Wanda wraps the straps multiple times around Y/n’s waist before finishing with a bow. “Now, we are ready to go!”

The two of them turn back to the counter and are faced with a new challenge. In Y/n’s small state, she can barely see over the counter, let alone reach anything on it.

Y/n slowly rises about a foot off the ground. When she looks down, she can see red wisps underneath her feet. Her little eyes go wide, and she turns to the witch in astonishment.

Wanda chuckles lightly, “it’s a magic stool, but you still have to be careful that you don’t fall off. Ok?” With a wide smile the girl nods and turns back to the task at hand.

Together the pair take turns pouring ingredients and stirring. Wanda shows Y/n how to crack an egg, and they both laugh when Wanda drops the shell into the bowl.

At one point, Clint comes in and stops only a few feet in, clearly shocked to see Y/n out so young, “Hey guys.”

“Hey Clint,” Wanda smiles. She glances down when Y/n doesn’t respond. What she finds makes her heart clench. The girl is closed off again. With a deer in the headlights look, she stands silently watching the archer closely. All the progress Wanda had made wiped away.

He continues to the fridge pulling out sandwich meat and some condiments, “what’s going on in here?”

“We’re making cookies,” Wanda says, tickling the girl’s side until she smiles up at her. Even if its just a small smile, it makes the witch feel a little better.

“That’s awesome!” Clint exclaims enthusiastically, “can I have one when they’re done?” He smiles to the small girl.

Wanda looks between the two, watching Y/n for an answer. When she doesn’t say anything, the older woman nudges the girl softly, “what do you think Y/n? Should we let him have a cookie?”

Clint puts on his goofiest puppy pout. He manages to crack through the girl’s wall, even if just the tiniest amount.

Y/n gives him a small, tight lipped smile and nods once.

The archer grins, “thank you!” He holds up the sandwich he was making, “well I just came in for this, but I’ll be back when those puppies are done.” He winks to the two of them before heading out with his lunch.

Once they are alone again, Wanda turns to Y/n, “ready for the messy part?” The girl nods, jumping ever so slightly in excitement on her magic step stool. The older woman sets the bowl of dough between them, “time to roll the dough into balls!”

After they run out of dough, they clean their hands and move on to the final step.

Wanda places the tray into the oven and sets a timer. She decides to clean the kitchen while Y/n just sits in front of the oven watching the cookies waiting for them to bake.

Wanda grabs the chocolate chips to put away but stops. “Hey мала(little one), watch this,” she waits till she has the girl’s attention. Suddenly she tosses a chocolate chip into the air and catches it with her mouth. She chews with a victorious grin.

Y/n quickly hops up off the floor and runs to Wanda, “I wanna try! Please?”

The sokovian smiles brightly at the girl’s sudden brazenness. “Here,” she hands over a chocolate chip and watches.

Y/n throws the chip high into the air. On its way down, it bounces off her nose and falls to the ground.

“Try again,” Wanda chuckles, handing over another chocolate chip.

The girl tries again and again and again while they wait for the timer. Wanda coaches her each time, and they both laugh when she misses.

When a chocolate chip finally lands in her mouth, they celebrate.

Y/n jumps into Wanda’s arms happily, and although she is shocked, the witch quickly reciprocates.

Warmth and darkness surround Wanda when she rolls over in bed. She can feel steady pangs of discomfort but coupled with the very loud thoughts from the other side of the wall, she decides the discomfort is not her own. The whimpers she hears from next door set her into action.

The sokovian quickly gets out of bed to check on her new friend.

When she reaches the door, Wanda knocks lightly, “Y/n, are you awake?” It’s a stupid question. Wanda knows the girl is awake, but she wants to alert the girl of her presence without scaring her.

She doesn’t get a reply so she cracks the door this time, “can I come in?”

Once again, the only reply she gets is soft whimpers coming from the bed, so she pushes further into the room. Wanda takes feather light steps, so as not to frighten the girl.

“Y/n?” the witch whispers as she approaches the bed. “мала(little one), are you feeling ok?” This time she does get a response. Y/n lays on her side faces away from Wanda, but she shakes her head enough for the older woman to understand.

No, she does not feel ok.

Wanda sits on the bed and reaches for the girl’s forehead to check for a fever. However, Y/n has a different idea. She pulls away from the woman’s touch, grumbling.

“Ok,” Wanda retreats her hands and looks down at Y/n, “I know you can take care of yourself, and you don’t need help. But, will you let me help this one time…. please?”

All is silent as Y/n contemplates her next move. With a huff and a nod, she rolls onto her back so Wanda can get a better look at her. She doesn’t look older than 4, much younger than she was earlier today.

She checks her forehead for a temperature, but she doesn’t have a fever. Wanda looks down to the girl who still whimpers in discomfort. “Can you tell me what’s wrong, мала(little one)? So I know how to help.”

Y/n’s little eyes gather with tears when she looks up to Wanda, “hurts.”

“Where does it hurt, мед(honey)?”

The girl only pouts and points down to her abdomen.

“Your stomach hurts?” Wanda confirms gently.

Y/n’s lip quivers as she holds back a sob. She nods twice.

“Oh sweet мала(little one),” the brunette tucks a lock of hair behind the girl’s ear. “We can go get you some medicine that’ll make you feel better if you come with me,” she holds both hands out to the girl, an open invitation for her to fall into.

…and that she does. Y/n sits up and moves into Wanda’s embrace. She wraps her arms around Wanda’s neck, while Wanda wraps her arms around Y/n and lifts her off the bed.

“I’ve got some medicine in my room,” Wanda walks them both next door, “but it tastes a bit yucky, so we’ll have to go to the kitchen to get a drink to wash it down. What would you like juice or maybe some milk?”

When they reach the kitchen, Wanda sits Y/n on the counter. It takes a little convincing to get the medicine down her throat, but after some milk, all is well again. Putting the dirty cup away, Wanda’s eyes fall on the jar of cookies they made this morning… actually two jars.

The first time Wanda made cookies for Y/n, she ate the two she was allowed to and then waited until after dinner to ask again. However, the rest of the team ate all the cookies before she could get another one. So this time, Wanda put the cookies in two separate jars, one of which is marked a sticky note that reads: Y/n’s Cookies.

The jar clearly holds less cookies than it did when Y/n took one after dinner. Suddenly the cause of Y/n’s stomachache is apparent.

“Мед(honey), did you come down here and eat more cookies after everyone went to bed?”

The girl looks to Wanda with wide eyes. She knows she is caught, so she just fesses up. Y/n pokes out her bottom lip and nods.

Wanda knows that Y/n is an adult and wants to be treated like one. Though, sometimes it’s hard to remember that when she is as small as she is right now. Still, the sokovian doesn’t have the heart to scold her. The stomachache is punishment enough.

“You’re a little cookie monster, aren’t you?” Wanda tickles the girl along her sides. She sits the girl on her hip and walks back to their floor.

“That’s why your tummy hurts so bad,” rubbing the Y/n’s back she continues, “too many cookies will make you sick. That’s why I said only two earlier. I didn’t want you to upset your tummy.”

They return to the Y/n’s room, and Wanda tucks her back into her bed. “Will you stay?” a tiny voice catches the witch off guard, “…til I fall asleep?”

The older woman smiles softly and obliges happily, “of course мала(little one).” She sits on the bed and gently massages the child’s abdomen to help ease the cramping.

A long silence stretches between them. Wanda speaks before Y/n can fall asleep.

“Y/n?”

Little eyes flutter open and look up at her.

“I know you’re probably used to doing everything on your own, maybe even prefer it….. but you know you don’t have to anymore, right?”

She tucks some hair behind Y/n’s face while the girl watches her intently, “you can come to me if you ever need anything… when you’re little or big. If you want to hang out or can’t reach something on the top shelf… even if you just want to make some more cookies.” She tickles the girl lightly until she gets a giggle.

“You don’t have to do it all by yourself anymore. You’re not alone. You have me and the rest of the team-“

“They don’t like me,” Y/n frowns and her eyebrows furrow.

Wanda offers her a sympathetic smile, “that’s not true. I think they just don’t really know what to say yet, but they’ll come around. If they opened up for me after what I did, I have no doubt they will for you.”

“What did you do?” the girl asks softly.

The witch opens her mouth to speak but struggles to find the words, “maybe next time. We should get to sleep. Close your eyes, мала(little one). I’ll be here till you fall asleep, and if you wake up again, I’m right next door.”

Y/n smiles up to her sleepily. She closes her eyes and quickly drifts off to sleep.

Once she’s asleep, Wanda quietly exits the room, stopping only in the doorway to look back on the sleeping little girl.

“Good night, Cookie Monster.”

A/N: There will be two versions of this one shot because I could not decide on an ending, so they will be similar but with different endings. This one is fluffy with soft Zemo and the other will be more angsty with manipulative Zemo. The latter will be called “Bitter” and will be linked to this one once it’s posted. I’m still new when it comes to posting fic, so would love to hear what you think.

You wondered sometimes about the man who came in most mornings. He had only been a regular for a little less than a month, but he tipped well and had manners the majority of your customers didn’t. There were only one or two other exceptions to the rule, but the majority were unfortunately ruder than you would like.

This man stood out and not only because he seemed to be a gentleman. You noticed right away how handsome he was. You didn’t make a habit of checking out your customers as a whole with one or two other exceptions (the same exceptions as before), but he was worth a second look.

He also had an accent that you couldn’t quite place, but there was a quality to his voice that made something inside of you stand at attention whenever he spoke. You had imagined cooking or baking together, his hands holding yours as he guided you at the stove or you showing him the best way to mix, and his voice reading a recipe aloud to you more times than you cared to admit.

And the nicknames. You had only known the man for a couple of weeks when he’d started calling you draga, sometimes mixed in with other words you couldn’t quite make out and would not be able to pronounce. After some small talk about the best kind of cookies, he said it for the first time in farewell with a smile touching his lips as he’d departed with his chocolate chip cookies.

After you stopped internally hyperventilating, you’d looked up what it meant.

Darling. Darling.

You had finally deciphered the other words too and realized that he was calling you, “my darling baker”.

This man.

You couldn’t believe he was now one of your regular customers. You were unsure what had made him decide on your bakery out of all the others in the city, but you were glad that he had.

You had a big enough crush that you were baking desserts specifically to match his tastes. You had even started to perfect a Turkish Delight recipe after he mentioned one of your desserts tasting similarly in the hopes of a smile or even a little moan. What you wouldn’t give to hear a moan from him.

You had it bad. Let’s just say you had a new favorite regular and you didn’t even know his name. Until the day you mustered the courage to find out.

That’s it. You were going to talk to him today and have an actual conversation and not just about desserts or what cookies were the best that day. Talking about baking was easy. It was talking about everything else that was hard.

You were wearing your lucky apron, you’d mustered your courage, and you had this. That’s when you heard the bell signaling a customer and you saw it was him. Never mind, you didn’t have this. You couldn’t do it. He was too attractive. It was intimidating.

You were tempted to drop a cookie or something, so you’d have the excuse to clean it up and duck behind the counter but you didn’t want to waste any. You took a deep breath as he stepped up to the counter and raised your eyes to meet his. You had never made direct eye contact with him before and now you couldn’t look away.

Why didn’t it surprise you that his eyes were as captivating as the rest of him? It wasn’t fair.

He showed a slight bit of surprise before smiling, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “Good Morning, dragi moj pekaru. I see I’m early this morning.”

“Good Morning. Yes a bit, but I’m glad to see you. And everything for the day is out already so I’d say you’re here at the perfect time.”

Was that flirting? You hoped it was. You never knew if you succeeded at flirting or not, but you were trying.

“I’m glad to see you too. You are always a bright spot in my mornings. You and your treats.” His voice was teasing as he stepped closer to the counter to start surveying what you had in the display case. You thought that you had finally perfected the Turkish Delight, enough to put them in the case this time, so you hoped he went for those. You wanted to see his reaction.

“Oh, thank you. It makes me happy when people enjoy my baking and I’m so glad you started coming here.” You smiled at him and glanced away.

He was dressed impeccably as always with his hair a bit windswept, strands of hair falling on his forehead. You took another deep breath and knew if you were going to do this then you had to do it now, before another customer came in and you lost your nerve.

“I’m sorry if I’m overstepping my bounds, sir. But you’ve been coming here most days for the past couple of weeks and I was just wondering if I could know your name?”

“My name?” His tone was surprised. “Yes, of course. My name is Helmut, dragi moj pekaru. It’s lovely to meet you officially. And you? May I know the name of my favorite baker?”

Helmut. Helmut. You tried it out a few times in your head. It suited him, though knowing his name now made you imagine giving him a nickname of your own. You told him yours, trying not to let your nervousness show in your voice.

He repeated it almost to himself. Hearing your name in his voice and how he lingered over it made you shiver as your brain couldn’t help but picture hearing him rasping it in more intimate situations. “What a beautiful name for a lovely and talented individual.”

You smiled at him. “Thank you, Helmut.”

You didn’t want to cut the conversation short because you were talking to him and having an actual conversation about something besides desserts, but you didn’t want to drag this on for too long either. You were certain that he was a busy man as he hade never lingered in the bakery before. This would have to be enough interaction for this morning. You knew you’d be spending the evening alone wrapped in blankets to relax after today, though you wouldn’t mind spending an evening with Helmut. He seemed the type to sit with you in the quiet and read or watch a movie with you.

“Have you decided what you would like this morning?”

“May I sample a Turkish Delight?”

You contained your excitement. He was going to try one.

“Yes, of course you can. I can’t wait to hear what you think of them.” You picked a pomegranate one out of the case with a small piece of parchment paper and handed it to him.

He accepted it and your hands brushed. You watched him avidly and hoped you weren’t making him uncomfortable. He smiled at you and popped it into his mouth, chewing it slowly and almost thoughtfully before letting out a slight involuntary moan as his eyes closed.

You were glad his eyes were closed as you froze. He actually moaned. As much as you’d hoped for one, you hadn’t expected it to happen. It was even better than you’d imagined. You composed yourself as he opened his eyes, wiping the excess sugar off his lips with his thumb.

“Hmm, irresistible. You have outdone yourself.”

You smiled at him, “Thank you. I’m so happy you liked it.”

Helmut smiled back. “I enjoy Turkish Delight, especially when they are as good as these. I know what I’m ordering today. I’ll take ten in assorted flavors please, draga.”

You started taking them out of the display case and putting them into a paper bag for him.

“Would you bake for me privately?” You froze, wondering if you’d heard him correctly.

He cleared his throat. “Do you cater events I mean? I am hosting a party soon, a reunion of sorts, and your desserts would be essential.”

You hadn’t done much catering before, but you were not going to mention that to him. “Yes, that sounds amazing.”

“Wonderful. I will come in with more details and we can plan out what I am thinking. Turkish Delight must feature of course.”

“Of course,” you smiled and did a happy dance inside. You got to spend more time with him and he liked the Turkish Delight. He’d moaned. This day was going so much better than you’d imagined.

“Just wait until you see my estate’s kitchen. It is one of a kind.”

His estate’s kitchen? So he was wealthy, which somehow did not surprise you. He gave off that air without trying.

You wondered again, Was this flirting?

Because for you, his offer to show you his kitchen had come off as almost romantic. A beautiful kitchen with quality ingredients was the way to a baker’s heart. You’d also be alone together for the first time in a setting where you were truly alone. Being in the bakery, always keeping an eye on the door for the next customer, wasn’t the same.

“I can’t wait to see it.”

He accepted the bag of Turkish Delight from you and paid, tipping well as usual. “Good, good. I will see you Monday, dragi moj pekaru. Until then.” With that, he strode out the door.

You watched him leave, excited by the thought that he’d be in on Monday and you could talk to him more then. Once you’d spent some time alone of course. You wanted to be at your best and you needed to recharge this weekend to be ready for Monday.

You’d be spending time with him to plan the dessert menu and would be going to his house to cater an event. Maybe, you’d find out where his accent was from and get to hear him say your name again. Maybe, he’d even ask you out after tasting the cake you planned to make for his party. You hoped so and smiled to yourself as another customer came in, and you put thoughts of Helmut aside for the moment.

Meanwhile, Helmut Zemo contemplated the best way to ask you out. After the party would be best if he could bring himself to wait that long. That decision made, he planned where he’d like to take you on your first date if you said yes. With today’s conversation, he now had higher hopes that you would.

Monday could not come soon enough.

Takes charge as the head of the team most times, as often he is the most logical one (there is a few times where that title belongs to Virgil)

When Roman got sick, Patton had to be the spy for a day. Didn't end up very well.

Logan has a "Free Friday" once every month to get away from the idiocy

When Virgil recognizes the body on Remus's dissection table one day and goes into shock/dissociation, the others (+Remus and Dee) have to look into Virge's extensive family tree to find out who they are

Roman and Remus fight constantly and have prank wars, only one of which ended up bad enough for the hospital (sorry Patt)

For nearly 50 years, Marina Abramović has made art out of pain, suffering, and heartbreak. Take, for example, the very first piece of performance art the Serbian-born artist created, titled “Rhythm 10”: it was a play on an Eastern European drinking game in which one participant places their hand, outstretched, on a surface, and stabs a sharp knife in the spaces between their fingers. Each time the player misses and nicks themselves, they have to take a drink. In 1973, a live audience watched as Abramović spread her hand onto a piece of white paper and played the game, her blood acting as paint, while she tape recorded her own guttural groans of pain. Fifteen years later, she and her ex-lover and artistic collaborator, Frank Uwe Laysiepen, whom she called Ulay, ended their 12-year relationship in the piece “The Lovers,” by walking towards each other for days across the Great Wall of China, then breaking up once they came face to face. And the idea for “The Artist Is Present,” the 2010 MoMA work that Abramović is arguably best known for, was born immediately after she suffered one of the most painful heartbreaks of her life: divorce from her ex-husband Paolo Canevari, following yet another 12-year relationship.

The Euro 2020 qualifying campaign is drawing ever closer to its climax and, as such, the muddied waters of the potential path to the play-offs are becoming slightly clearer.

Northern Ireland, with the best will in the world, are highly unlikely to earn automatic qualification. They require four points from their two games against the Netherlands or back-to-back wins from their November double-header at home to the Dutch and away to the Germans.

So it’s reasonable if we now cast our eyes to the play-off race and its current standings.

How do the Euro 2020 play-offs work?

As we know, 20 teams will go directly into the tournament through the qualification process, leaving four places held over for the play-off winners.

As many as 16 teams will make it into the play-offs, which will be split into four separate paths.

In each path, there will be single-legged semi-finals, to be played on Thursday, March 26 at the home of the higher-ranked side, and a single-legged final on Tuesday, March 31, for which a draw will be made to decide home advantage. Those will result in the four winners who land a coveted place at Euro 2020.

The participants of those play-offs will be decided based on the inaugural UEFA Nations League competition, unhelpfully for Northern Ireland. Having lost all four games of their League B campaign, Michael O’Neill’s men are ranked 24th in the Nations League rankings.

The four separate play-off structures are, in theory, to match-up with the four Nations Leagues (A, B, C and D), with the 16 Nations League group winners going forth to the play-offs. However, should any of those group winners qualify directly for the tournament, and they will, the play-off place is handed down to the next best placed team in the Nations League rankings.

As a result, in order to qualify for a play-off place, Northern Ireland require no more than FOUR teams from Nations League C and D to qualify directly for the finals.

What way does the Euro 2020 play-off race currently stand?

Currently, there is still a risk that Northern Ireland could be cast out into the cold by five pesky League C or D sides. Let’s have a look at the runners and riders as things stand, each group’s danger rating to Northern Ireland’s hopes and when the really key games are coming up:

Group A: Kosovo are the team to look out for after their bright start with eight points from five games. They’re just a point behind the Czech Republic and this one is likely to all come down to the meeting between the sides on November 14. A Czech Republic home win is the result Northern Ireland want there. Danger rating: 6/10

Group B: Serbia are also just a point away from a top two spot although, helpfully, second-placed Portugal have a game in hand. The teams have already played each other twice so barring a Portuguese collapse against the likes of Luxembourg and Lithuania or a Serbian win over table-topping Ukraine, Portugal’s place should be safe. Danger rating: 3

Group C: Northern Ireland’s group. Danger rating: N/A

Group D: The Republic of Ireland, of course, are sitting proudly atop the table and with Denmark and Switzerland in hot pursuit, this group should be safe. Only a remarkable run from Georgia can spoil it and that, simply, isn’t going to happen, is it? Danger rating: 0.5

Group E: The danger team here is Hungary, currently residing above Wales in third place, level on points with second-placed Slovakia and just a point behind leaders Croatia. It’s all very tight but Hungary’s fixtures in this international window are away to Croatia and home to Azerbaijan. While we can assume there’s a win over the group’s basement side upcoming, NI will be cheering on the Croatians on Thursday evening. Danger rating: 5

Group F: League C teams still in the running Romania and Norway are hot on the heels of second-placed Sweden, one and two points behind respectively. Romania host Norway next Tuesday, when we should know more about who’s going to mount a late challenge to the Swedish. As Romania have a harder run-in, NI should be cheering them on this week. If Norway win, there’s a real danger they could make it as they should win their last two games, while Sweden must still face Spain and Romania. A Swedish home win over Spain next week would be great. Danger rating: 6

Group G: Slovenia are currently the only League C or D team in a qualification place. They’re placed second in Group G, a point ahead of Austria. There is a potentially crunch game coming up on Sunday, when the two sides directly below group leaders Poland meet for a real six-pointer in Slovenia. The GAWA will be cheering on the Austrians. Danger rating: 7

Group H: The side most likely to pose a threat is Albania but, with Turkey and France still to come and those top two six points ahead, it would take an almighty, unthinkable shock. Danger rating: 1

Group I: Belgium and Russia have all-but got qualification sewn up already, with eight points between second-placed Russia and the rest. This would require a miracle to trouble Northern Ireland’s play-off hopes. Danger rating: 0.1

Group J: Finally, in Group J, Finland and Armenia are positioned second and third. With next-best Bosnia & Herzegovinia already five points behind Finland, it’s not looking great here. We’ll know more after Finland go to Bosnia (Saturday) and then host Armenia (next Tuesday). The good news for Northern Ireland is that Italy are six points clear at the top and likely to limit the damage to just one team. Danger rating: 7

So when are the key games?

Here are the games Northern Ireland fans should be paying particular attention to. The team the GAWA should be cheering on is in bold:

October 10: Croatia v Hungary

October 12: Bosnia & Herzegovinia v Finland

October 13: Slovenia v Austria

October 15: Romania v Norway

October 15: Finland v Armenia (Draw)

November 14: Czech Republic v Kosovo

So, in conclusion, how’s it looking?

I’d wager it’s looking rather rosy indeed. The four most unlikely groups to upset the applecart require something not too shy of a miracle to spoil it for Northern Ireland. Providing that doesn’t happen, all five of the other groups would need to provide a League C or D automatic qualifier.

The chances of those stars aligning is, surely, a long-shot at best.

It’s worth saying we will know MUCH more come the end of the current international window. If we can get the teams in bold above winning, the play-off place would be all-but secure. Conversely, if the other teams manage to come out victorious, things could be in a little bit of a darker place. Let’s reconvene next Wednesday and assess the damage.
