ashley graham
ashley is the type of person to dress up for movies. not all the time, but when it’s right to do so. when barbie came out she dragged leon to the theater on opening day in an all pink outfit.
ashley also cries during movies and has no shame. she was blubbering her way through wicked.
as for the kinds of movies she likes, she’s mostly into romances, comedies, classic fantasies, and the odd animated film.
examples: 10 things i hate about you, enchanted, harry potter, moana.
carlos oliveira
carlos definitely laughs out loud in a movie theater, even if the joke isn’t very funny. he mostly catches super late shows so it’s not a rare occurrence for him to be the only one in the theater.
want to see a movie you’re not sure other people will want to see? call carlos! this guy will watch almost anything and have a good time with it. when ashley wanted to watch wicked, she went with carlos because no one else was free/interested. they ended up having a great time and he even wore whatever outfit ashley had created for him. (he also blubbered his way through the movie).
because carlos seems like he’d be into so many different genres, it’s hard narrow down specific ones. but i’ll have to go with action comedies, occasional superhero/comic book flicks, and sci-fi.
examples: the nice guys, rush hour, deadpool, star wars.
chris redfield
chris is the guy who doesn’t go to the theater on his own. it’s almost always in a group outing or if claire manages to drag him.
even so, he will be out like a light without fail. the longest he managed to stay awake was an hour. one time he even fell asleep during the previews. he vastly prefers to watch a movie at home.
chris is into the classic action movies. he also enjoys buddy cops.
examples: die hard, rambo, rocky, lethal weapon.
claire redfield
i think if anyone in this list is close to being a movie buff it’s claire. she’s at the theater the most out of everyone and always manages to drag at least one person with her too.
she enjoys the previews, loves a good post movie debrief at a restaurant, and will smack chris awake when he starts to nod off but then give up after a few times.
with that, claire is very much a “if it’s good, it’s good” type of gal so it’s hard to say exactly what kinds of movies she’d like, but i think she’d be into both sci-fi, action, and drama, as well as more lighthearted comedies.
examples: star wars, little women, the hunger games, whiplash.
jill valentine
the movies aren’t jill’s first choice of a pastime but when she’s with a group of people, she enjoys it. usually doesn’t start out too invested in whatever it is she’s watching but ends up getting more into it as time goes on.
i’d say jill would be into a good thriller and would also appreciate some sci-fi or horror movies as well.
examples: prisoners, interstellar, the silence of the lambs, se7en.
leon kennedy
leon is also like chris in that he’d prefer seeing a movie at home rather than in the theater, but he’s also less susceptible to falling asleep in the theater. leon also lets himself get dragged to movies a lot (as mentioned previously, ashley took him to barbie and he even wore a pink shirt. how sweet).
leon is a basic bitch and likes basic action movies but hey! they’re popular for a reason. he also enjoys a good comedy.
examples: the equalizer, deadpool & wolverine, the matrix, ferris bueller’s day off.

Just curious, what requests do you have in your queue/to do currently? If you're ok with saying it that is :]
Oh boy, that's a bigger question than last time someone asked! I have over 200 waiting requests at this point!! Because of that this got very very long, so I put the rest under the cut! Barbie (2023)
Tumblr media
I’ll admit: I thought I knew everything about this movie before it came out. It was going to be a feel-good, “summery” movie that would promote Mattel and encourage people to buy more Barbie products. This movie was going to make people forget about the controversy surrounding the concerning, and hopefully unintended, effects that Barbie had and still has on girls today. As it turns out, this movie clearly had effort put into it, already setting itself apart from movies created just to be cash-grabs. Barbie was entertaining to watch, but it was nothing to write home about.
If you continue to read any further, you will BE SPOILED. Though, the movie has been out for a couple of months, so...
Strengths
Really Funny
Most of the time Ken, as well as the other Ken’s, served as hilarious comedic reliefs, which is expected seeing as they tend to be melodramatic at times and portray a comical version of the patriarchy. Seeing the main Ken, who I shall refer to as Stereotypical Ken, rename things into something way too long and ridiculous (“Mojo Dojo Casa House”) before then seeing him get into a dance number with Rival Ken following the Ken War was a joy to watch. Basically, Ken is funny, but really, what else is new? (Also, that last scene with Gloria’s husband unintentionally saying something that is “a political statement” on accident is also extremely funny.)
Promotes Self-Acceptance
The scene where Barbie meets an old woman at the bus stop, sees her for her beauty despite her old age, and call her beautiful, only for the woman to reply with “I know” is amazing. Age doesn’t degrade a woman’s beauty, and this message is more important than ever with the anti-aging culture in today’s society. Plus, Barbie—essentially the “flawless woman”—is made up of multiple women of color!
Aesthetically Pleasing
Obviously, Barbieland is very pink and pastel, which I personally love. I’m pretty sure someone has used Barbie’s Dreamhouse in their Pinterest board as inspiration for their future dream house of their own
Points Out Societal Contradictions
More specifically, it points out contradictions upheld by the patriarchy. An example provided by the movie concerns dating men. You can’t accept them easily or else they’ll think you’re a “tramp,” but you can’t deny them or else you’re a prude
“Don’t Think, Just Watch”
If you’re looking for a movie that you don’t need to think over, Barbie is your movie. You simply need to turn off your brain and bask in the “feel good” energy of Barbieland. This movie is extremely refreshing if you watch it after Oppenheimer (which I might review later)
Additionally, the Matrix reference was delightful! I loved the parallels with the blue pill (the pink high heel) and the red pill (the Birkenstock sandal).
Explaining the Patriarchy to Men
This is an experience I'm sure a lot of women has dealt with. You're trying to explain your experience as a women in today's society, but the man, or men, you're talking to always come back with a "but these women" or "that can't be true." It's frustrating, and no matter how many times you try to reword it, they simply don't believe what you have to say.
Barbie is able to make it easier for them to understand by literally reversing the roles!
The Kens are mostly seen as accessories. The Barbies don't even know where they live, or if they even have a home. The Barbies hold all the positions of power whereas the Kens are simply their arm candy that make them shine all the brighter. Put it simply: "She's everything, and he's just Ken."
It's no doubt that the treatment of the Kens are similar to that of women of the real world, though I'd argue the Kens are treated somewhat better since the Barbies are simply ignorant to their struggles rather than actually looking down on them.
If men are offended by the blatant injustice towards the Kens, congratulations! You got to feel a fraction of what some women experience throughout their lives!
Flaws
“Feminism”
Barbie tries to toe the line between being a shallow, fun movie and being a socially critical movie, but it fails in this task, resulting in a confusing mess.
Of course, this is my opinion, but once you start continuously alluding to the patriarchy, you don’t have the luxury to not treat it seriously. This is opinion is further reinforced when Sasha called Barbie a “fascist.”
To continually refer to the mistreatment of women under the patriarchy yet not address why it exists is the equivalent of slapping a band-aid on a bullet wound.
The patriarchy, or misogyny in general, is supported by multiple systems. Among them, capitalism is a big one. After all, how else are you going to market your beauty products and overpriced clothes to women if they’re not shamed into having to dress nice in order to please men?
Yet this is never mentioned throughout the film. Instead, they portray the executives of big corporations (corporations that have a habit of exploiting women in factories where men verbally abuse them) as silly, goofy, harmless guys. They suffer under the patriarchy too guys!!!!
And before I hear "But the movie would have to be several hours longer if that were to be the case," that argument also applies to the movie's constant mention of the patriarchy. Why not explain more about Barbieland instead of bringing up the patriarchy for the nth time?
Referring back to Sasha and her wildly incorrect statement of Barbie, it felt like it was shoe-horned into the plot. In fact, the addition of calling Barbie a fascist made me confused as to message that Sasha’s speech was supposed to convey.
At best, it’s meant to characterize the tween as a “stereotypical Gen Z middle schooler” that throws around buzz words without knowing what they mean, which takes away the credit from actual valid points she made. At worst, it’s meant to portray people who have an issue with Barbie, like those criticizing how Barbie promotes unhealthy beauty standards, as foolish virtue-signaling individuals who don’t know what they’re talking about. (Her friend admitting to like Barbie before being shamed into claiming otherwise could also be a nod to the nature of cancel culture, which is something I appreciate.)
If Barbie is really a fun movie meant to watch with no deeper meaning, why bring up the patriarchy and the very real consequences of it every 5 minutes?
Final Judgement
Would Recommend: ✓
Good to watch if you...
Simply want to see a lighthearted, feel-good movie
A smidge of social commentary doesn't bother you
Enjoy a movie all about girl power
Want to see a movie affirming that you are a person, not a sexual object
Like Barbie and/or the color pink
Love participating in trends
Just watched two extremely uncomfortable sex scenes in a historical dramatic movie and need something to get your mind off of it
Bad to watch if you...
Want a serious look at the patriarchy
Believe whatever Andrew Tate and his fellow believers spew
Hate giving money/support to big companies such as Mattel
Literally and unironically think that Margot Robbie is a 2/10
Dislike women

M could go to the SAG-AFTRA Bearding Standards office, get the union to represent her in what is clearly a bearding violation on D’s part. She and her baby do have rights. They could force D to quit dragging them around like shiny baubles on his charm bracelet, sparkly acquisitions just for show to enhance his image, like that monstrosity of a ring he wore. Or that planter’s hat. Or those suspenders. Hello, Big Daddy subliminal reference. Where’s Brick and his football buddy?
In fact, in America right now, her baby has more rights than she does. She could use that, she loves jumping into the middle of powerful political movements and making an awkward and ambiguous stand to personally benefit herself. It is sort of her thing. And she is dressed perfectly to appeal to a certain faction. A twitter campaign “defending her honor” (say it like Foghorn Leghorn would) could possibly outweigh the JoHo baby dropped from the sky. And M needs one fan who dresses like this daily to see an opportunity to make a name for themselves and to post online on Insta or preferably Tik Tok and say #freemamamia! They need to be angry and wave a gun, even if it is a toy gun, or cry with a cute live baby in a pouch, and the baby wave a gun. Again, in this case, a toy gun is better. I would do it myself, but I am too old and not cute enough. (And they could tie in to both Brit-Brit and all the Mama Mia possible associations right now, which are endless, even The Gilded Age might get a little boost.)
Although I know the gloves are hard to source, because why do these crimes against humanity even exist, surely AW, who leaked all this shit, and knows exactly what she is doing, could provide a source on her site, pretend the money goes to charity, like the rest of the team. Call it “My Niece’s Niceties”, hashtag the free mama mia stuff, and include mama and baby matching outfits geared to each activity, but with cute M showbizzy touches, like a shirt saying “You have a baby! IN A BAR!” It is a Re/ese-ism, all cute girls know anything she does is okay. She is bonafide, RW has put in the work and earned it, bitches. M could even have a shirt with her own drunken face screaming “Do you know who I AM!” AGAIN, Ree/se makes that okay. OH, and the gloves become like the Pink Pussy hats, and there is a Zoom Live march where they all raise their pink lace fists like pink power at D for being such a sexy brute to her and demanding she follow him so he can have sexy times always, at the drop of her big pregnant girl panties. SHE IS GOING TO BE A MOTHER, YOU FILTHY ANIMAL! (D needs to plan for this, and release an EP of sexy lullabies during the protest.)
Ree/se paid homage to Dol/ly with all her WWDD gear for her new lifestyle branded Dra/per Ja/mes southernisms, M could pay tribute to Re/ese in the same way, AW and M’s mom would know how to merchandise the shit out of that. RM could set that all up, he knows all the parties involved here, and he loves to mess with D’s life. It could be a whole new source of revenue for the team, and start a new trend at baby showers. They could sell in matching packs, like Barbie Mom and Barbie Baby-Hollywood Pap Walk, Torn Fishnets look with a diaper that says “I am peeing right now”, or Nursing in a Broadway Theater, Jeweled Bra Version. They couldn’t use Barbie, of course, the new Barbie movie would shut that shit right down. Glitzy would work, I guess. Same with Re/ese, she would fiercely protect her brand, of course.
But then that could be a whole thing, too. Catfight. RM would so love to set that up, too. The campy drama of R and M going after each other, of R’s teen daughter trashing a baby on social media “Extra Crispy Von Glitz-Criss? Who does she think she is, The Little Princess? Sending me a package from her “Assorted Poo” collection? And that baby tiara is going to make her head all misshapen.” Priceless.
Still not like being in the Matrix series, but it’s something.
Tumblr media
Nonnie, are you drunk? I have NEVER put that man on a pedestal and claimed he was perfect. My friends and I quite regularly call him out when it is warranted.
The bottom line is this for me. D has obligations he has to travel as a result of. SHE is the one that is expecting a child and she is not obligated in ANY way to follow him on jaunts across the country or the ocean. So yes, she is the one taking unnecessary risks when she in a vulnerable state at what is considered an advanced age for pregnancy. Now, don't go twisting that, as your kind likes to, to me saying she is old. I'm not. It's a known fact that advanced maternal age is anything over 35.
As for the final point you made about him being besties with LM? That doesn't even deserve the attention I am giving it now. However, if you don't recognize the difference between a mutually beneficial "friendship" in this industry and a genuine friendship, than I can't help you. Just because he didn't drag her ass through the mud does NOT make them besties, it just reinforces he's more diplomatic than most.
