Seeing characters in romance stories just jetting between countries at a moment's notice with no thought for visa; seeing airports as sites of triumphant climaxes and romantic denouements instead of places of fear and danger where a sword hangs above your head— it all breaks off little pieces of my heart. They're constant reminders that my people will never be human enough in the colonial world order to be allowed to move freely around it. No matter what your race, those non-refugees living in the Global North will never understand what it's like to be part of a global ghetto where your passport is nothing but a trembling supplication and humiliation.

ahhh what a beautiful day for ficbook to start trying to violently kill itself while appeasing our lord and savior roscomnadzor. Mass deletion of queer works will definitely grant them the way out of black list and will not alienate the massive part of their audience whatsoever. This is a great plan

The whole "Spiritualists murdered Houdini" conspiracy theory instantaneously falls apart once you realize that Houdini had a burst appendix, a fever of 104 degrees, a broken ankle, and was sitting down while being punched several times in a row in the gut all in an age when doctors weren't required to wash hands before they examined patients and before penicillin/antibiotics was a thing.
But sure, it was a mysterious poison that killed Houdini and not you know probable infection.

the gag of bepo switching his voice to serious and deep when he apologizes is enjoyable but on top of that it tells us that hes cutesy by choice

is your mega life series AU on ao3
At the moment? Not currently. The last time I tried, a year ago now, I got about three chapters in and then I got hit by the AO3 Author Curse of ridiculous disruption. In my case, that meant getting accepted to college! (I was not under the impression I qualified to go to college. Now I'm in the preliminary stages of a law degree at the most prestigious university in my country. Funny how that happens.)
The reason I've started talking about the No Stranger Curses AU over here on tumblr, though, is because I do plan to start posting it to AO3 again. (Hopefully that's not tempting fate.)
You can find me over there under the same user, Jayflying, if you want to keep an eye out for what I've been working on! There should be something new over there pretty soon...

firewatch au is so funny like yes it's a dramatic angsty story about a grieving man hellbent on chasing fleeting hope. it's set against a dramatically gorgeous but harsh backdrop full of intense isolation. it's about human connection and closure and accepting help so your anger and sadness don't run you into the ground.
it is also not insignificantly about bueraucratic nonsense and faulty paperwork,,,

It's weird to think of Edgeworth even existing on the weekend. It kind of seems like he should puff away in a cloud of maroon smoke at the stroke of 5 PM on Friday.

It should also be mentioned that The Snow Queen film specifically has been credited with raising the Iron Curtain or the stalwart refusal of USSR influence on neighboring countries allied with the US. The Curtain refers to physical and political barriers put in place after WW2 in restriction of so-called radical communism, per the Domino Theory that one country succumbing to what the USSR's culture had to offer would lead to the spread of Red Communism.
Which is a lot to unpack.
Anyway.
The Iron Curtain functionally banned any cultural nuance or appreciation between the USSR, Russian territory especially, and just about anywhere else in the world. People who had worked on projects in the USSR were not permitted to return home, books were not published on either side of the Curtain, etcetera, once the ban was imposed.
The Snow Queen brought it down. Cultural exchange was permitted again and the Curtain officially lowered not long after the international welcoming of the film. Not only was it was a beautiful example of innovative animation techniques, utilizing cool shit like rotoscoping for one of the most iconic scenes, but it is also credited with inspiring Miyazaki [as in the Studio Ghibli Hayao Miyazaki].
Oh, yeah, and it is available on YouTube for free. Right here. [This is the English-dubbed version but there are preserved versions in the original Russian as well. One is linked above in the post, LOL.] It's a really good film. I liked the bandit princess the most.
[Also read more about the influences of the Iron Curtain on USSR-era literature as well as how animation boomed in the wake of the Curtain's fall. There's a lot of cool books and articles about it.]
