I have been in such a weird and bad mental place recently, and it's caused me to do some things I wouldn't normally do, like revisit media I liked as a teenager, which is the long winded way to say I've gotten back into night vale, and through that I was put onto Jeffrey Cranor and Janina Mathewson's novel You Feel It Just Below The Ribs
You should go read You Feel It Just Below The Ribs
#you feel it just below the ribs#it's a dubious fictional memoir set in an alternate reality very much like our own and the writer of the memoir is so compelling#I love her#I can't wait to see what her deal is#also if you're into audiobooks this one rules#the narrator is so so good#and also I LOVED season one of within the wires so maybe I'll go back and listen to more of that bc I love how well these 2 write together!

me, stupidly and weirdly resistant to listening to audio books vs reading a physical book for no real reason: man i wish there was a way to like, read a book while i crochet like i do with tv shows and movies and podcasts
#toy txt post#my reasons are irrational you dont need to try to talk me into it. i KNOW#its very silly of me#imagine how much reading i could get done. but alas. Feels Bad#even listening to a more. uh. Story type podcast or fiction like nightvale was a bit difficult to start for me. i like nightvale now i#listened. but i worry that is clocking in my brain as an Exception 馃様 maybe it would be easier if i tried some nonfiction books? scary#i also struggle with single host podcasts apparently even tho im also ehhhh on the kind where the structure is the host Interviewing a#different person everytime? maybe it would be okay with a nonfiction audiobook tho cos it would be getting read by a narrator and not sound#so much like a guy ranting into a mic which makes me feel a little insane. altho propaganda doesnt necessarily always sound like a guy#ranting into a mic so idk. i could probably make it through if i can find a nice book about like. parasitic worms. i could tolerate#feeling like im falling into sigma male affirmations videos for worms i think. wormffirmations are allowed#*to clarify i dont listen to those but listening to better offline makes me feel like im morphing into the kinda guy who does and i hate it#which feels unfair cos he is RIGHT and the podcast is good but i need there to be like a cohost there to break the tension of the Ranting#sometimes he has guests on? but its not quite the same#i think the format i like best is either like 2 or 3 regular cohosts discussing things within a specific topic#OR. 1 host whos like infodumping to the other host who knows nothing about the subject. OR. 2 hosts info dumping to each other about#different aspects of the subject. OR. 1 host who brings on fun guests to infodump to them about a subject. and then obviously the subject#needs to intrigue me. ex. sawbones well theres your problem (I HATE THAT THIS ONE IS BEST EXPERIENCED ON YOUTUBE馃槶 I WANT THEM TO JUST DUMP#ALL THE SLIDES INTO A BIG BLOG POST SOMEWHERE AND I CAN CHECK IN AND FOLLOW ALONG THAT WAY WITHOUT HAVING TO HAVE MY PHONE SCREEN ON THE#WHOLE TIME!!!!!!!!! but. im listening for free so its unreasonable to demand more of them BUT ALSO I FEEL LIKE JUST COPYPASTING ALL OF THE#SLIDES INTO A BIG BLOG POST ISNT THAT MUCH MORE EFFORT THAN EDITING A WHOLE YOUTUBE VIDEO? WAAAAAH. THEY DONT NEED TO BE TIMESTAMPED OR#ANYTHING JUST THROW EM IN ILL FIGURE IT OUTTTTTT#anyway. also more than 3 hosts is really pushing my ability to keep track of voices.#anyway: sawbones wtyp tpwky behind the bastards scam goddess#(which is true crime adjacent but focuses mainly on scams and isnt copaganda and laci is funny and cool)#common descent pod completely arbortrary maintenance phase if books could kill#deep sea podcast has more bringing ppl in to interview them about shit than i personally enjoy but i put up with it cos i do like the hosts#and the subject

Aaaahhh asdfhfs help it鈥檚 Doctor Who again :3 I was inspired by someone very hot to rewatch specifically the 12th doctors run and like I did it all in like a week (if I didn鈥檛 have work it would have been days) and now the grip it has on me rn I truly can鈥檛 like I must not only rewatch all of Doctor Who but also feel the most intense need to watch everything I can with Peter capaldi in it and I鈥檓 just sitting here fully unable to be interested in literally anything else rn
#idk why I鈥檓 like this#well I do actually#but that鈥檚 not the point#tell me why I鈥檓 googling what audiobooks he鈥檚 narrated???#also trying to figure out how much time I鈥檒l have between work and appointments to start my rewatch from the beginning#answered#bark at me

man while i'm on my felix kick it fucking sucks that they keep not knowing what the FUCK to do with this character when he's actually very strongly characterized. i went off about this last night but like, underutilized aspect of felix: he's like, a really good leader?? and i'm not talking an uber-inspiring protagonist-type leader like the PC; i'm talking an extremely functional organizer of people that you especially need in a military context. it's kind of hard to clock at first if you're not paying attention, especially because you're introduced to him while he's desperately trying to stave off a mutiny; but considering he's on a shithole iceball with a group of restless 18-to-25-year-old recruits who, as far as they're concerned, are trying to kill an immortal enemy, the fact that only one of them winds up ultimately raising a hand against him is impressive. he boosts morale, he makes good tactical calls on his own while not being too proud to take assistance, he metes out swift discipline without being needlessly punitive. and when the squad splits up, people keep in touch with him!!!
like, felix is extremely good at his job, and that aspect of him kind of deepens the tragedy of his permanent stagnation in rank when you compare him to other soldier comps like Rusk or even early-game Jorgan. i'm not a fan of fictional or real militaries but this character's skillset as an officer has been a repeatedly underutilized resource narratively & it makes me want to eat glass
#felix iresso#jedi consular#visions that manifest to me after watching & rewatching the consular hoth story multiple nights in a row to help me fall asleep.#@swtor writers if you're gonna recycle felix plot points try recycling the one where he's expertly wrangling a flock of scared morons w gun#instead of the one where he *checks notes* gets physically & psychologically tortured. thankyou<3#while i've got you here: did you know his VA Dion Graham is a fucking former Broadway actor and -prolific- audiobook narrator???#he's got like 84 fucking awards for the quality of his narration#he's narrated a ton of literature and specifically a lot by black authors#there's this fantasy novel he narrated called Black Leopard Red Wolf by Marlon James that looks really fucking good#OH AND HE WAS ON THE FUCKING WIRE FOR 8 EPISODES??#looking at this man's career it feels extra awful to me that they gave him NOTHING.#and he still kept coming back to the booth. not just for Felix but background roles in Onslaught as well.#GOD.#Mr Graham sir thank you for everything i'm so sorry they're taking you for granted like this

i鈥檓 once again listening to the Network Effect audiobook, but this time the dramatized version, and even thought is quite good with the full cast, sound effects and everything, i kinda of prefer the original version better. maybe is affective memory but the narration by Kevin R. Free is just too good

i have this (probably somewhat normal?) funky memory thing where if i listen to a podcast or audiobook while working on something or walking somewhere, then if I see the same visual stimuli later I'll remember the audio really clearly or if I hear the same audio stimuli later I'll be able to remember the visuals of what I was doing at the time really clearly.
all this to say. I've accidentally linked Shady House - the big manor house in Po Town - with indigenous (specifically O.jiC.ree) culture in my head because I was listening to an audiobook (jonny appleseed by j.oshua whitehead) while working on the m.inecraft Shady House yesterday LOL. was just idly thinking about Shady House this morning and started wondering why tf it was bringing to mind the Rez and thoughts of people's Kokums, and then I remembered what I'd been doing the night before LMAO
#i should maybe listen to an audiobook or podcast about indigenous h.awaiian culture while working on it actually#I've been meaning to learn more about those cultures for YEARS so this could be a good opportunity#btw I big recommend Jonny Appleseed !! cw for topics of sex work and general sexuality as well as homophobia and transphobia though#but the audiobook is especially cool because it has the author narrating it!#if ur interested in reading anything by an i.ndigiq.ueer author then I'd def recommend it 馃#thank god for audiobooks honestly djdksl I cannot seem to sit down and read very often#but i can easily put on an audiobook while washing dishes or going for a walk or working on a jigsaw puzzle or playing mc LOL#dandy.cmd

2023 reads / storygraph
Teach The Torches To Burn
M/M Romeo & Juliet reimagining
follows a gay Romeo who falls for Mercutio鈥檚 younger brother, while tensions between the houses rise
and becomes friends with an aroace Juliet in their shared experience of wanting to defy their parents expectations
#teach the torches to burn#teach the torches to burn: a romeo & juliet remix#aroaessidhe 2023 reads#I enjoyed this it's pretty good!#wonder if it made tybalt the main villain and cause of everything a little too much?#or maybe it's just that the audiobook narrator had a really caricaturistic-villain voice for him that made him seem too over the top#idk anyway#juliet AND friar lawrence are aroace!#(well the latter maybe just ace idk) I enjoyed how that aspect was discussed. having not much expectations anyway.

Have been re-reading Robin Hobb's Royal Assassin and man. Regal Farseer.
Regrettably, the way that he keeps getting away with his particular brand of villainy seems more plausible to me with time. Since it's been at least 10 years since my last read-through and I can see a lot more parallels now with the modern social media cults of personality around certain tech billionaires and political figures.
And as frequently happens lately, I have many thoughts about parallels with Elden Ring, concerning the themes of power, royal bloodlines, the mechanics of forging, the lifecycles of dragons, quests to snowy mountains, wolves, herb lore, and probably some other things.
#Farseer trilogy#another well narrated audiobook series#appreciating the artistic choice to be in first person as a memoir#Because it's a foregone conclusion that Fitz survives intact enough to put pen to paper despite all the torture he lives through#Captures the overdramatic outlook of a teen who thought that every setback is the end of the world when clearly in hindsight it wasn't

i'm going to go insane because i just read a goodreads review for a biography of henry kissinger where the reviewer complained that the narrator did a "ridiculous german accent" for kissinger... bitch that's what he sounded like!!!
#missingno.exe#i listened to the audiobook as well and it was actually quite an accurate impression#that mf really did have a ridiculous german accent it's not the narrator's fault

i love audiobooks so much in theory but good fucking god the narrators can be so hit or miss sometimes. you never know if they're gonna do some stupid voice for a character that just makes the entire thing unlistenable
#i have been wanting to read the vampire chronicles books for a long time so i got the audiobook for interview with the vampire thru hoopla#and its SO bad#the narrator isn't terrible all the time but he decided what is supposed to be a nearly imperceptible hint of a french accent#means louis sounds like honhonhon baguette eiffel tower#and since most of the book is literally in the form of dialogue as louis telling his story well. it's very incredibly bad you see
