My ✨Creative Process💫 for Character Design

So a little heads up about this process. This shit took WAAAY longer than I usually take. However, my partner said I should post my process because it was honestly a good example of how to persevere when creativity is difficult or you aren't quite creating the character you intended.

FIRST: Capturing the Vibe

make a playlist or mood board for the character

drawing notes: so this character was inspired by GinjaNinjaOwO on youtube. They made an OC that was 100% self indulgent and i wanted to do that same. So i started with the concept of a van helsing type of character mashed together with a mysterious masked hero and a noir style tortured detective. I have a wide range in favorite characters. The one consistency?? They are all probably alcoholics. i had my work cut out for me 😱

(ps. i know i spelled it silas and not cilas at first. I didnt want my characters to share first letters of their names. i dont know why that is it just is important to me.)

drawing notes: This drawing is good but its very bland and doesn't capture the unhinged weathered alcoholic i was trying to create. It doesn't have the emotion I was trying to convey. However, I like the body type, hat and long coat so I will be trying to keep those elements as i go.

drawing notes: Im happy i kept the coat and hat but the body type isnt translating the way i wanted now that he has body armor. The face and legs have way too much detail on them and need to be simplified for a more readable design. I was trying to combine the ideas of masked outlaw monster hunter with a noir style tortured detective.

FOURTH: FINALLLLYYY A GOOD IDEAAAA 😭😇😅

he honestly started coming together at this phase

i took pictures of all the characters i wanted Cilas to resemble and paste-ed them on their own layer to stare at while i brain stormed

then i used my powers of autism to see the pattern in the character tropes

i used the patterns i saw to create a clothings style, body type and stature

some of the ideas i had for him i split off into an unfinished character that i will post at a later date

drawing notes: he looks... a like arin hanson 😳 oops. well i do love arin hanson so i guess im not mad about it. i love his coat and im so glad i could keep the hat. i am a little frustrated that some of the elements had to split off into a different character but i think it was worth it in the end because i love how he came out. he is still fat but its a lot more hidden by the amount of layers he wears. some of the characters i used were meant for personality, some for vibes and some for appearances.

color is definitely where my strength is in art so this was a much easier process XD

drawing notes: his color pallet is very muted primary colors with more emphasis on yellow and blue to communicate that despite his hard life he is still calm and prepared.

I used to be a pretty casual Granblue player who was mostly around for Belial and about a year ago I developed a strange fascination with Seofon, to a point that I got a bunch of my friends into him as well (including Shades, it's my fault). I was apprehensive about recruiting an Eternal, so I got Seofon from the freebie I got after Seeds of Redemption in early February

...I then recruited the other nine Eternals over the course of the next seven months

Just yesterday I transcended Seofon for the third time

Which meant clawing my way to victory against Ewiyar in a grueling solo battle, but I pushed through. For. For him

I used to be so casual and I've been getting nonstop Platinum every month since March. I've gotten so much stronger, especially in Wind. Can you guess why? It's all his fault

First perpetuity ring and everything

I used the free revans weapon we got from the anni event to get a Sette di Spade because I can't do revans raids yet and I've been using it ever since too -

He just gives me a lot of feelings

The friend group keeps making jokes that ever since he noticed my interest, we've been getting a lot of content for him as well, Heart of the Sun and Last Sumo Warrior and Relink and the Grandcypher Kitchen and his art for the orchestra concert and who knows what else

I also had to grind like crazy in Relink to unlock him immediately when I hadn't unlocked Proud quests yet so I spent hours farming Ahrimans, so I'm used to suffering for him at least

I just wanted to get that off my chest as I am the resident Most Normal Seofon Anon

Anyway, he's pretty great I guess (understatement of the century)

Sorry for OC posting I am just very excited to show off all three of my MK1 OCs at once :D I wrote a little bit about each of them under the cut, also I'm sorry I forgot to crop the canvas for the third image so he's very small compared to the others 😭 If you read I hope you enjoy 🫶 and maybe lmk if there's one you'd be interested in hearing more about haha jk unless... 😳

Ki'Raan is a demon! Formerly a member of the brotherhood of shadow, he decided to make his impulsive escape shortly after Ashrah. The idea was that he wouldn't bring too much attention to himself this way, and by the time his absence would be noticed he'd have found himself a nice secluded place in the outskirts of Outworld to lay low for a while. As a more unwilling member of the brotherhood, he was disgusted by his own species' mindless and brutal tendencies. He's also very envious of the looks of humans and Edenians, which is why he currently wears a porcelain mask to 'reflect his inner beauty', until he can successfully blend in as some sort of Edenian noble. When he does have to kill it always has to be precise, and elegant, viewing murder as a sort of art form. He doesn't like a messy kill. He spends most of his time trying to perfect his disguise, which to him means finding a 'craft' to perfect and become a skilled artisan. He probably lives in a run down little wagon or shack filled with failed experiments of perfumes, sculptures, paintings, things of the like.

Morrigan is a lot less fleshed out compared to the others, but I suppose in a way it adds to their mysterious nature, if their background eludes even me. I like the idea of a lot of things about them being unknown, all that matters is the work they do in the royal family's court as one of their scientists. I also don't take them as seriously because I like to call them Shang Tsung's number one D-Rider LOLL they're just completely into the idea of unethical science and doing it right under the Queen's nose, they're quite reprehensible. They were loosely inspired by the Blight from DBD, especially with how I imagine them in Kombat. Their X-ray move would probably consist of them jabbing their cane (not pictured because I forgor 💀 to design it) straight into someone's ribcage and their fatalities could involve blowing someone up with chemicals or like bashing their head in with the handle side. I'd like to figure out more about them to share some day, but for now I imagine they weren't always named Morrigan, but there is something from their past they want to hide from, which inspired the name change and peculiar way of dressing. Almost like being reborn once they were accepted into the court.

Yuze Torres is a normal human native to Earthrealm! His father left shortly after he was born, becoming a Shaolin Monk and leaving his family behind in order to train at the academy and join the fight to protect Earthrealm (because they had to have come from somewhere in MK1 right 😭). His mother moved on a few years later, so he managed to live a relatively normal life with his mother, step-father and three other siblings. Anything he learned about fighting was from his step-father, an FBI agent who taught him these things for self defense and to protect his family, which was always a priority for Yuze. Recreational fighting and designing (from outfits to fantasy-inspired weapons and machinery) are among his greatest passions, both of which work in his favor after being tangled up in the affairs of the MK1 cast. The details of Liu Kang's confrontation with him are a bit fuzzy at the moment, but I know exactly how I want his own personal ending at the end of the game to be like, and I totally have so much more to say about this guy if there is ever a demand for it...

Tabieitaken ONLY appear on ONE joker card. Like they have to share a card with Shidou and it’s not even in the main deck….but also I was waiting for them to announce a tabieita set but apparently that’s not happening quite yet…..I’m really hoping s2 brings a lot more tabieita fans to the jp fandom specifically so they’ll make sure to include them more in promo….

tbh in the otoya version it’s kinda left open to interpretation whether it exists or not i think?? because otoya’s still in high school when he gets together w y/n and he’s a year older than her so he’s in his third year at that point…considering he joins bllk while in his third year iirc they technically might’ve just started dating RIGHT before he left for bllk ☝🏻 the karasu version takes place over a much longer stretch of time though so it’s made pretty clear that he didn’t go to bllk/that whole thing didn’t exist 😩💔 he does still play soccer though!!
