Christmas Carol-cember, Day 10
There’s something heartbreaking about learning about lost media. The time, sweat, tears and work put into a film or TV special or episode that disappears due to a lack of preservation efforts or a missing film print that limits your ability to mass produce more or give it a remaster clean up for future generations. This was the case with this, a musical episode from an anthology series called “The Alcoa Hour” that got Basil Rathbone to play Scrooge. This was an anthology series created by the Alcoa Corporation, an aluminum manufacturing company that, as part of marketing their product, produced this series for the fledgling new networks and the television sets that were popping up in American homes by the late 1950s. Most of the episodes were comedic but they had their share of musical episodes to showcase the talents of it’s stars Alcoa invested in.
As was the case for the early days of television, preserving episodes didn’t seem like a big concern. More often than not, episodes would just be tossed in a box and left to rot or were just tossed away in general. For decades, many people who saw this episode and wanted to see it again were out of luck and there was a belief that it never would. The most anyone had to prove this special existed was an album recording that the Alcoa Corporation allowed to be released. That is until, as luck would have it, archivists discovered a copy of the master reel in the home of a former Alcoa executive living out his retirement. So in 2011, the world that either never got the chance to see it or those still alive to remember it were given a second chance to revisit their childhoods as it was released to DVD.
The camerawork for this special is very rudimentary and the backgrounds look like you could easily push them over, but this was par for the course during this time period and it makes sense if you consider the theatrical staging of this special. The meticulous switching of cameras to be timed and ready to switch to another camera for a separate angle. Such as Fred making his way through a crowd and arrives at the door of Scrooge and Marley where he instantly has to sing his song with Basil Rathbone, “Bah Humbug.” The speed between the two is quick and I’m impressed that the cameras were able to keep up and switch at the right times needed to swap. Robert Weed as Marley is far less raspy than in previous versions, this one has a very commanding voice, one that goes to an operative range. He is not decorated in chains, though he does have them as I suspect the rattling chains would have been too noisy for the microphones.
A lot of decisions made for this special seem to speak to the limitations of television production at this time. Examples like Scrooge commenting on his childhood self, we never see this lonely kid he describes but they make the camera switch to show Scrooge working at Fezziwig. Or when he’s at the Cratchit House and the Ghost of Christmas Present tells Scrooge Tiny Tim will die if the shadows remain unaltered. While Scrooge never directly says his line “let the poor die to decrease the surplus population,” the Ghost of Christmas Present calls out Scrooge for “thinking about this." But while it uses these shortcuts to keep the story going, it does other things that I have to applaud the production crew and director Daniel Petrie for having the ambition to pull off on TV. I like the use of interpretative dance throughout this special. From the opening song “Old Fashioned Christmas” showing people dancing in the street that makes good use to the darkened parts of the set. There’s another during the passage of time from young Scrooge growing in his success yet at the cost of the woman he loved. Literally showing it in the construction of a wall being built that separated her from him. For 1955, it’s VERY clever in its symbolism. Or even a dance sequence in the graveyard once Scrooge sees his name on the gravestone and the dead rise to surround him and cover him with chains as he runs around terrified before he falls to his knees and begs for another chance at life. It’s clearly theatrical but I rather admire that ambition and making the transfer from stage to TV, while a little awkward due to the position of the cameras, feels like an early progenitor to filming stage musicals today.
The music was composed and written by Fred Spielman and, I’m not gonna lie, out of the musicals I’ve been watching so far? This probably has some of my favorite musical songs so far. “Old Fashioned Christmas,” “Humbug,” and “Yes, There Is a Santa Claus” have gotten stuck in my head since watching this special. It helps that the musical quartet The Four Lads, best known for their single “Istanbul, Not Constantinople,” serve as a great Greek chorus throughout the special with their harmonies.
Oh and lest we forget this was produced by an Aluminum Manufacturing company, the special ends with a whimsical commercial of a family surrounded by aluminum wrap Christmas decorations. All that was missing was the cast of MST3K riffing on it.
I won’t deny this version is very rough and it often feels amateurish at times, but I’m willing to forgive that because of the limitations of television recording in this time period. I’m glad I saw it, it’s a part of media history and the fact we have access to it is reason to have a copy in case they go missing or they are removed and no one gets a second chance. Basil Rathbone’s performance as Scrooge is fantastic, the choreography works very well and, even for an anthology show, the songs aren’t too bad. The album sold very well and it was the most people could have to hear it when they weren’t able to watch it. But thanks to the efforts of preservation and a lucky break to find a copy of this episode, everyone gets that chance.
One more caveat: since this version was long thought to be gone, Rankin/Bass created an animated remake in 1978 with Walter Matthau as Scrooge. I almost covered that version until I discovered this and I’m happier to spotlight this significant piece of media history than an unimpressive animated special. Especially when the only thing of interest I have to say about that special is that it was animated by the Japanese-based studio Topcraft Company Ltd. The name may not be familiar, but they did many collaborative works with Rankin/Bass, most famously 1977’s “The Hobbit” and 1982’s “The Last Unicorn.” But the most amazing thing about them? After they went bankrupt in 1985, the studio split in half with many animators joining onto a new studio born out of it’s ashes and reformed under it’s founders who acquired Topcraft's assets thanks to funds from the last film they made under their banner, former Topcraft employees Toshio Suzuki, Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki. They founded this new studio under the name Studio Ghibli.
The Alcoa Hour’s “The Stingiest Man In Town” can be watched on YouTube. Link provided below.

Next time, we’re gonna go back to animation but take a trip to a place where ponies run free and answer the question how can you have a Christmas Carol when there is no Christmas?

Week 7: Brainstorming & Synectics
This week's post continues to dig into Samuel W. Franklin's book "The Cult of Creativity: A Surprisingly Recent History" Chapters 4 & 5- exploring the differences between brainstorming, synectics sessions and diving into the early processes of creative consulting culture.
In the postwar era, large corporate employers such as the United Shoe Machinery (or "the Shoe") were searching for reliable ways of generating new product ideas. By 1950, the Shoe company enjoyed a monopoly status with a whopping 85% share in the market! With the increasingly competitive market and an ongoing antitrust battle, it became essential for these companies to diversify their product lines and invest into creative trainings that would spur innovation.
Many businesses kept tabs on the latest trends that could improve their work processes and the output of ideas among employees. But where could all the answers lie...was it brainstorming? Or hypnosis? Leadership had read countless books in business management and machine design. Creative thinking methods were already being put into practice at companies such as Westinghouse, General Motors, General Electric and Alcoa. In the summer of 1962, Synectics made its debut with the Shoe's senior executive and research management.
Synectics was similar to brainstorming- in the sense that each theory focused on the unearthing of latent creativity within each individual. Both processes emphasized the idea that group collaboration could enhance creativity and innovation (rather than be a stumbling block).
These synectics sessions would include a trained facilitator whom would host a small group: invoking abstract thinking, getting further and further away from the original problem until participants were guided towards workable solutions (best case scenario). Synectics, as described in Chapter 4 was like an "empirical recipe for creativity: a rigid ritual designed to produce, almost mechanically, that ethereal state called inspiration." This technique was designed to emphasize the more playful, irrational and poetic side of the mind in order to achieve the more concrete, corporate ends. This approach did vibe well with the company culture of the United Shoe Machinery- whose staff already included a wide variety of scientists and artist types.
Now, synectics sessions were on a completely different level than brainstorming was. If brainstorming was considered unconventional to the business sector, then synectics was just downright bizarre!
Brainstorming was for the "chairman"- the button down military type, while synectics sessions channeled the "counterculture" of the time.
Image of a Synectics Session, from Synecticsworld Inc. (circa 1960s)
During this era of evolving scientific research and management, many growing organizations invested into creative trainings. Both processes aimed to transform competitive energy into cooperative energy- and tap into the creative potential of each individual person!
Queue: the emerging industry of creative consultation. Synectics company founders George Prince and William J.J. Gordon met as employees of the corporate consulting giant, Arthur D. Little (ADL). As the postwar consumer economy brought on new challenges that overturned dated assumptions, ADL clients all aggressively pursued product diversification in search of solutions for new problems: such as coming up with new products for where there was no market yet.
So around 1958, ADL formed its own ad hoc Invention Design Group made up of employees with varied interests, skills and backgrounds. The organization invited both George Prince and William J.J. Gordon to lead the charge- Prince, an alumnus of Harvard with a background studying mathematics, science, psychology, etc. and Gordon, former creative director of an advertising firm who specialized in marketing.
Prince and Gordon routinely set up video and audio recorders around their meeting rooms and taped thousands of hours of invention and problem-solving sessions "in vivo"! Afterwards, they would review the collection of tapes in detail to develop dependable creative strategy.
Quickly making a splash in the creative thinking scene, Prince and Gordon were invited to present at the 1958 summer workshops at MIT along with brainstorming enthusiast Charles Clark. With the "Gordon Method" mentioned in several creative thinking books, synectics proved to be a compelling alternative to brainstorming. From there, Prince and Gordon split from ADL and went on to found their very own organization: Synectics Inc., which became America's first consulting agency specializing in creativity and innovation.
From their downtown office in Cambridge, MA: the two lead many sessions for their clients and began offering week-long trainings to send synectics out into the world! The majority of their clients came to them with specific product challenges, and then gradually: the agency broadened their scope beyond product development to include even marketing strategy and internal reorganization.
Despite the initial challenge of convincing budget-minded executives to invest into something as elusive as creative consulting: Synectics went on to achieve a number of high profile features within the Wall Street Journal and Fortune magazines- and a client list that included GM, GE, Alcoa, Kimberly-Clark, Proctor & Gamble, Black & Decker.
In June of 1966, five of the Shoe's research managers traveled to Cambridge for a three day workshop, and Goodchild returned for a week-long course to become the new in-house Synectics facilitator for the United Shoe Machinery. Many visiting executives together learned about the synectics theory and its applicable frameworks.
The arts served as both a contrast / model for the Synectics concept of invention. Gordon wrote that "the traditional view of the nature of creativity places heavy emphasis on the fine arts and poetry as the 'only' creative enterprise." He shared that invention in the arts and sciences are similar and characterized by the same fundamental, psychic process. Prince later clarified in a television interview that what he meant by that was "this is not the kind of creativity that will land your work in museums- this is another animal!"
The synectics approach was about thinking poetically, and being "one with the work". This creative thinking approach helped many businesses to initiate innovation, encourage collaboration, boost morale, promote marketing to key roles in strategic planning efforts and inspired the creation of in-house design teams everywhere.

This Question Can Never Be Answered As It Will Remain Subjective. Some People Would Say That CPA Is Doable And Easier, And Others Will Say CMA Is The One They Would Like To Crack. All We Can Do Is Make It An Easier Choice For You. CMA Vs CPA Needs Some Discussion.
The Thing About CPA Is That You Are Supposed To Sit For A 16-Hour Examination (That Is - The Four Sections Of The Exam). You Will Be Given 18 Months In Order To Crack All Four Parts Of This Examination. This Time Period Begins On The Very Day When You Give Your First Part Of The Exam And Pass.
The Four Sections That Come Under CPA Are:
Auditing & Attestation (AUD)
Business Environment & Concepts (BEC)
Financial Accounting & Reporting (FAR)
Regulation (REG)
On The Other Hand, CMA Will Give You Three Years To Pass Two Sections Of The Exam. This Time Period Usually Begins On The Entry Into The CMA Program Day Itself. It Consists Of Two Main Parts, With Four Hours For Each Part. Another Fact Is That The Passing Rate Of CMA Is Lower Than CPA. 45% Candidates Are Able To Pass The Two Sections, Whereas, Collectively They Make Around 50% Passing Rate.
The Two Exam Parts That Come Under CMA Are:
Financial Planning, Performance, and Analytics
Strategic Financial Management

If We Talk In Numbers, The Average Salary Of An Experienced Certified Public Accountant Is Around $66,000 Whereas The Average Salary Of A Certified Management Accountant Is Around $60,000 (As For Late-Career Holders). However, There Are Other Factors Too That Matter Over Salary.
Let Us Discuss The Salary Of A Certified Public Accountant First. Normally, A CPA Earns 15% More Salary Than That Of Non-CPAS.
The Factors That Affect The Salary Of A Certified Public Accountant Are As Follows:
Size of the firm
Public or private accounting
Your initial work experience
A Certified Management Accountant Has 63% Of Compensation Under His Profits. Initially, He/She Might Earn A Little Less Than A Certified Public Accountant.
The Factors That Affect The Salary Of A CMA Are Given Below:
The age of CMA
Initial work experience
Education level
And the industry he/she works in
However, This Should Not Be Affecting Your Decision Of Pursuing CMA Because It Is A Known Fact That A Late-Career Of A Certified Management Accountant Is Far Better Than A Certified Public Accountant As He/She Earns More. Not Only Salary But Consider Other Factors Of Life As Well, Such As Job Satisfaction, A Work-Life Balance, And A Comfortable And Rich Lifestyle.
CMA Vs CPA Has Been Described Above. All The Main Points Are Also Mentioned In The Same. Read And Make Your Choice Accordingly.
What Are The Requirements For Becoming A CPA Vs CMA ?
Though, There Is Not Much Of A Difference When It Comes To Eligibility Criteria For CMA Vs CPA. But, We Will Still Learn About It In Order To Avoid Further Confusion. These Certifications Have Their Own Specific Requirements, And Both Of Them Are Described Below, Separately.
CPA Requirements
There Are Three Basic Requirements To Become A Certified Public Accountant And They Are Described Below.

What Are The Estimates Of CPA Vs CMA Salary In India?
Salaries For CPAs And CMAs Are Quite Similar, With The CPAs Slightly More; However, Wage Categorisations Are Likely To Be More Evenly Matched With Time. Much Will Depend On Your Practice Location, Job Title, And Years Of Experience, As With Any Professional Salary Comparison. According To Industry Statistics, A CPA Earns 15% More Than A Non-CPA Accountant On Average.
CPA Vs CMA In India
In India, Both CMA And CPA Are Highly Regarded Certifications With Distinct Professional Prospects. On The Basis Of Many Characteristics Such As Eligibility Requirements, Time And Effort Involved, Cost Of Certification, Wage Difference, And So On, One Can Simply Distinguish Between The Two And Select Which One Best Suits Their Needs. CMA Is A Wonderful Choice If You Are Involved In Management Accounting, Strategic Planning, Financial Planning, Reporting, Analysis, And Decision-Making.
CPA, On The Other Hand, Is Better If You Consider Auditing, Tax, Reporting, And Regulation. While CPA Certification Covers A Wide Range Of Skills Such As Financial Accounting, Auditing, Taxation, Business Law, Ethics, And Economics, CMA Certification Focuses Primarily On Financial And Accounting Expertise Required In The Corporate World, Such As The Skills Needed By Finance Managers, Controllers, And CFOs.
CPA Vs CMA:
CMA Is More Practical Than CPA And Includes Abilities That Are More Useful And Essential In The Corporate World. CMA USA Is Far Less Expensive And Time-Consuming Than CPA, And The Examinations Could Be Undertaken Even Before Graduation. In Fact, After Obtaining CMA, You Might Want To Pursue CPA As Well, Because The Fundamental Curriculum Of Both Courses Is Accounting-Related, And Having Both Can Help You Stand Out. A Dual Certification Can Be Obtained By Pursuing Both Certifications One At A Time.
What Are The Aspects Of CPA Vs CMA Difficulty?
To Get Your CPA, You'll Have To Sit For 16 Hours Of Exams Spread Out Throughout The Four Sections. The CMA Exam, On The Other Hand, Is Divided Into Two Parts And Takes Eight Hours To Complete.
Despite This, The CMA Exam Has A Somewhat Lower Pass Rate, With About 45 Percent Passing Both Portions Together, Compared To Half (50 Percent) Or Better Passing Each Part Of The CPA Exam.
Candidates For The CMA Have Three Years To Complete Both Portions Of The Test. The Time Period Will Start On The Day You Started The CMA Program. You Have 1.5 Years To Complete All The Parts Of The CPA Exam If You Want To Become A CPA. The Time For The Exam Commences As Soon As You Sit For The First Part.
CPA Or CMA, Which Is Better In India?
Because CPAs And CMAs Have Different Primary Areas Of Competence, Determining What Form Of Accounting You Want To Undertake Is Crucial.
CPAs Conduct And Sign Audits As Well As Tax Work, Including Representing Businesses During IRS Audits. Cost Accounting, Management Reporting, Financial Planning, And Analysis Are Among The Specialties Of CMAs.
In Manufacturing And Specific Jobs, Such As Plant Control And Management Accounting, CMAs Have An Advantage. However, At The Corporate Level And In Financial-Reporting Jobs, The Case Is The Opposite.
"A CPA Is A Route To Go If You Want Exposure To A Variety Of Sectors And Public Auditing Skills,". "The CPA Is Good If You Want To Work In The Very Same Work Each Day And Make An Impact At One Company, But The CMA Is Incredibly Relevant.

(It's News to Me, panel show/game show. John Daly and the panel are on the top, contestants one and two on the bottom.)
Day 46- TV and Radio:
TV-
Tales of Tomorrow, season 1, episode 41, ”Ahead of His Time,” July 18th, 1952.
It’s News to Me, season 1, episode 1, July 20th, 1952.
Radio:
The Great Gildersleeve, “Backyard Camping,” July 16th, 1952.
Gunsmoke, “Doc Holliday,” July 19th, 1952.
Defense Attorney, “Baseball Fix,” July 17th, 1952.
I was glad to have a couple of different shows today, because I’m still getting kind of burned out listening to the same shows over and over. Today’s happiest surprise was the game show/panel show It’s News to Me. The show has a host, four panelists, and one contestant. The contestant is given little hints about stories that have been in the news over the last week, and a panelist gives the contestant their version of the answer. The contestant then has to either agree that the panelist is right or disagree and say they are making it up. It was really fun to watch, because a lot of the news was about the political conventions happening. There was also a question about a story I had just seen in Life magazine about a U.S. ship breaking the speed record for crossing the Atlantic. The captain of the ship actually came on the show for a little interview!
This Defense Attorney episode with Mercedes MacCambridge wasn’t as good as I first one I heard, but it was still a good show, well deserving of interest. Unfortunately not many episodes have survived, so they’re hard to find. Tales of Tomorrow was a futuristic story again, and like so much media of the time, it casts a foreboding eye to the future, believing it will be radiation that will kill us all. In this episode, an experiment with nuclear energy in 1952 caused radiation levels to slowly and imperceptibly rise, and by the time anyone was really aware of it, it was too late. In 2052, humanity had just hours to live. It was so eerie to watch, because I kept wanting to scream, “It’s not the radiation! It’s the carbon emissions! It’s carbon emissions!”
...And now a word from today’s best sponsor: Alcoa! The Aluminum Corporation of America! Do you like Lifesavers candy? Of course you do! And do you want their nippy sweetness to stay just as fresh as the day they were produced?! Well, thanks to Alcoa aluminum, it can! Aloca gives your Lifesavers candy "sparkle, locked-in flavor, and freshness!" We package all kinds of foods at your local grocers! Just please, oh pretty please, forgive us for not having Tallulah Bankhead as our spokesperson. Reynold’s Wrap got to her first. Maybe we’ll try Bette Davis?

A Christmas Carol Holiday Season: "The Stingiest Man in Town" (1956 TV musical)
In some ways, this oddly-titled Christmas Carol musical is a cousin to the Shower of Stars version of 1954. Both are TV musicals that aired as part of an anthology series, in this case The Alcoa Hour. Both were originally broadcast in color, but only survive in black-and-white. And both feature Basil Rathbone, who here trades his 1954 role of Marley's Ghost for the starring role of Scrooge. But there, for the most part, the similarities end. While the 1954 Carol features a classical operetta-style score by Bernard Hermann, this production, with music by Fred Spielman and both book and lyrics by Janice Torre, is an all-American Broadway-style musical.
The cast that supports Rathbone's Scrooge includes pop singers Johnny Desmond as Fred, Vic Damone as Young Scrooge, and the Four Lads narrating the story in music, as well as two stars of the Metropolitan Opera stage, baritone Robert Weede as Marley's Ghost and soprano Patrice Munsel as Belle. They sing a wide array of tuneful songs: "Holly-Ho," "An Old-Fashioned Christmas," "The Stingiest Man in Town," "I Wear a Chain," "Golden Dreams," "It Might Have Been," "The Christmas Spirit," "Yes, There Is a Santa Claus," "One Little Boy," "The Birthday Party of the King," and "Mankind Should Be My Business." Some of these songs come with lengthy dance sequences too.
With all this music and dance, and at a running time of only slightly over an hour, the story is, of course, slightly condensed. The Ghost of Christmas Past (portrayed as a bearded old man by Ian Martin) doesn't show Scrooge his childhood, just the Fezziwig party and his romance with Belle, and later, Tiny Tim's possible death is only mentioned by the Ghost of Christmas Present (Robert Wright), not shown by the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come (Keith Herrington).
Dickens purists probably won't call this production a favorite. The style of music is sometimes too "1950s Broadway" for such a classic Victorian tale, reinforced by the fact that apart from the few British performers (Rathbone, Martyn Green as Bob Cratchit, and a few others) most of the cast uses their own American accents. Some of the lyrics are corny too. But there's still plenty to enjoy. For the most part, the songs are memorable and charming, and the casting ranges from solid to excellent. Rathbone's Scrooge is colorful and convincing both his early crotchetiness and in his transformation, with just a slight a hint of caricature, and while his singing voice is mediocre, it still suits the role.
This might not be the most Dickensian Christmas Carol adaptation, but if you enjoy musical versions of the tale, then it's a must-see.

Center Court Culture Sharing
by Pat McShea
In the final hour of a Saturday-long visit to the museum by a Kent State University class, a student who played high school basketball volunteered to read aloud to nine college classmates. “With that experience you’ll do a great job,” I explained as I handed her a paper bearing a single long paragraph, and then directed her toward a quiet corner of the exhibit hall to a practice the assignment.
While the majority of the 40-student class opted to spend the unscheduled block of time exploring the exhibits and visiting the museum shop, ten students had accepted my offer to guide them on a tour of the Alcoa Foundation Hall of American Indians.
The now 23-year-old exhibition is divided into quadrants with a different culture presented as a focal point in each, the Tlingit of the Northwest Coast, the Hopi of the Southwest, the Iroquois Nations of the Northeast, and the Lakota and their neighbors of the Great Plains. The twin themes of Native diversity and the continued vibrancy of Native cultures are repeatedly addressed in the hall’s displays. When I paused the group at the Lakota Winter Count display, and recruited the volunteer reader, I hoped to delve a little deeper into both themes.
Winter counts are a method by which groups of Lakota People record and remember their history through pictographs on a tanned animal hide or sturdy cloth. Each year, after leaders review important events and agree upon the previous year’s most significant occurrence, a new entry is added to the unique document. A designated count keeper holds the responsibility to annually recite, in sequence, the story behind each pictograph, and thereby orally pass along the group’s history to a listening audience.
The Winter Count on display, which covers a period of 125 years for the Sicangu Lakota people on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, was created specifically for the exhibit by Dr. Thomas Red Owl Haukaas (Lakota/Creole). After summarizing the importance of winter counts for the students, I read aloud the artist’s explanation of his work from a nearby label: “My winter count is from a contemporary viewpoint. It purposely includes community and national events, men and women, fullbloods, and mixedbloods as an attempt to capture the richness and complexity of our tribe.”
The mention of contemporary viewpoint provided the opportunity to introduce another, albeit non-Native one, author Ian Frazier’s description of high school basketball star SuAnne Big Crow in On the Rez, his 2001 account of life on the Pine Ridge American Indian Reservation.
I called back the volunteer reader and provided background for the description of an event that might be judged worthy of winter count commemoration. “The quote you’re about to hear is pulled from a considerably longer story. It describes how in 1988, SuAnne Big Crow, who was then a 14-year-old basketball player from the Pine Ridge Reservation, transformed the racially charged playoff game atmosphere during pre-game warm-ups at a school in Lead, South Dakota, a white town located outside the reservation. Her actions were brave, clever, defiant, desperate, and heroic - all at the same time.”

As someone who experienced the intimidating atmosphere of away basketball games, the volunteer brought an authentic voice to her task, confidently reading Frazier’s account of SuAnne dribbling as she led her team onto the court of the “deafeningly loud” high school gym. Her voice shifted to a slightly higher register, however, when the narrative departed from normal pre-game procedure.
Then she stepped into the jump-ball circle at center court, in front of the Lead fans. She unbuttoned her warm-up jacket, took it off, draped it over her shoulders, and began to do the Lakota shawl dance. SuAnne knew all the traditional dances – she had competed in many powwows as a little girl – and the dance she chose is a young woman’s dance, graceful and modest and show-offy all at the same time.
The reader’s calmer voice returned where the account quoted the impressions of SuAnne’s surprised teammates, then turned higher as the action continued.
SuAnne began to sing in Lakota, swaying back and forth in the jump-ball circle, doing the shawl dance, using her warm-up jacket for a shawl. The crowd went completely silent. ‘All that stuff the Lead fans were yelling – it was like she reversed it somehow,’ a teammate said. In the sudden quiet, all you could hear was her Lakota song. SuAnne stood up, dropped her jacket, took the ball from Doni De Cory, and ran a lap around the court dribbling expertly and fast. The fans began to cheer and applaud. She sprinted to the basket, went up in the air, and laid the ball through the hoop, with the fans cheering loudly now. Of course, Pine Ridge went on to win the game.
The reader earned a sincere round of applause from her classmates for her efforts. I, in turn, felt a rewarding sense of accomplishment when she asked to keep the now deeply creased paper in her hands.
