Ok tried watching the 2012 JCS live arena tour version bc that’s one a lot of people talk about but
Judas is a white man with dreads and Mary Magdalene is a white woman with dreads too
I cannot watch two hours of that
Also the camera work is horrible it’s constantly zooming in and out and changing angles but this is a stage production it’s mean to be viewed as the full stage… there’s even the screen behind for zoom ins… why is the official filmed version so jarring and incoherent and hard to watch???
Also they have a screen behind with zoom ins and stuff which is cool but they also set it in the modern day so there are text and email notifications which is funny but then one was from a Holly and I don’t want to be inserted into this :/ Jesus suffered enough he shouldn’t have to know what emails are too

HORROR MOVIE CHALLENGE 2022 FAVES, HONORABLE MENTIONS & LEAST FAVES (AND THE ONES I COULDN'T FINISH)
Another year, another successful horror watch challenge finished. And with that comes my also annual tradition of looking back on the movies I watched and picking my faves and least faves. I was able to choose my faves a lot clearer this year I think, it was the least faves that took some narrowing down a bit.
As always I never make this list in order of preference. It's just going down the order of me watching them, but you can probably tell the ones I liked best from my enthusiasm talking about them. Anyway, let's start this thing.
FAVE WATCHES:
Scream - Now, this is more of a pity add tbh (it really should be in the Honorable Mentions section max truthfully) because I love the Scream movies. Anyone who knows me should know that. It's not the best one of the series but I had fun with it still. I just wish they would get creative with the formula at least just once cuz man ugh. Thank goodness for the OGs, even tho I enjoyed some of the newer kids, because I personally could not stand Melissa Barrera's lead character. It's a shame we're not getting Neve in this next sequel but trust, I will still be watching. At least we're getting Hayden back as Kirby so there's that. Please don't kill her off immediately!! She's too smart for that.
Tumblr media
2. X - Anyone who may have actually kept up with me doing this challenge (are there actually people who do? From the likes I get on some of these posts, maybe), they'll know that I was pleasantly surprised by just how much I enjoyed this movie. It wasn't so much groundbreaking as it just was fun to watch. Mia Goth was a compelling enough lead with an ensemble cast full of familiar faces that had me invested to watch. It was the first fully successful watch of the challenge for me, which is great because that's usually when it really kicks into gear.
Tumblr media
3. Titane - Say what you want about this movie, but after you watch it, you're not gonna be able to forget about it. The visuals, that plot, the acting. It's all a super wild ride that delivered on its "the most fucked up movie ever made" promise from its trailer. It may be unwatchable to some but like, this was truly memorable if anything. I know my work friend who loved it is gonna be proud that it made its way onto the Faves list. lol Also, gotta note, that poster is totally stunning.
Tumblr media
4. Last Night in Soho - It has flaws for some people, but I honestly think it's a well-made movie with wonderful visuals, acting, and music. The whole aesthetic is just great. It's a spectacle with an ending that may leave the audience feeling divided. Regardless, I liked this and knew once I finished watching that it would totally make its way on this list.
Tumblr media
5. Fall - This gets to be on the Faves list because even if it has its flaws or whatever, I really did end up pulling for the girls making this. Ginny (Virginia Gardner) from Runaways was the more compelling lead for me personally but overall, this worked because of the friendship at the core of it. It's a situational fear kinda horror movie so you have to be able to put yourself in their shoes to care. The way it was filmed made it really easy to I think. Def had me squirming in my seat so it earned its spot I think.
Tumblr media
6. Orphan: First Kill - Now, was this on par with the original? No. Truthfully, not really. But I still had fun with it. So, it gets to have its spot on this list. Isabelle Fuhrman still kills it as Esther, despite the years in between this and the first movie. And Julia Stiles got to have fun with her role. Definitely full of flaws but that's part of its charm for me I think. Yes, I'll watch a third movie if they're really planning to do it cuz why not? lol
Tumblr media
7. Bodies Bodies Bodies - I don't care what anyone says, I loved this movie. Horror comedies are my genre. Always will be. This was a solid one for me. Rachel Sennott definitely steals the show as Alice I think, but overall, the cast all gelled for me. Yes, even Pete. lol As I said in my post for it, my eyes stayed glued the whole time, which I think says a lot as far as I'm concerned for this challenge so props to everyone involved making this movie.
Tumblr media
8. Prey - I liked this. It worked for me. Yes, another movie with a strong performance from a woman lead. It was a great year for women in horror as far as I'm concerned. Amber Midthunder was great in her role. The action sequences were really done well imo. I felt the tension. One of these days I'll actually watch the original Predator movies (yeah, I know lol) and this made me want to honestly so I can see how that original one holds up. Either way, I think this movie deserves its praise.
Tumblr media
9. The Sadness - I'll admit, I'm surprised I'm putting it on my Faves list but out of the movies that originally made up the Honorable Mentions list before wanting to cut one (since I generally want to keep that to 5 movies or so), this is the one that I remember all too well how I was feeling when I watched this thing. It felt like an event. Not the most pleasant of ones, but it truly did. A total rollercoaster of emotions with a batshit craziness to it. It's a hard movie to recc but as far as zombie movies go, it's gonna be hard to forget by the usual standards because of just how depraved it gets. So buckle up if you end up checking it out.
Tumblr media
10. Pearl - Aside from X and Nope, I think this movie was the big event of the challenge for me. I watched X, liked it, saw they were coming out with a prequel, and I waited eagerly until I could watch it. And well, Mia Goth killed it as far as I'm concerned. It is not a movie without its flaws. She may have went a little too dramatic at parts perhaps, (and maybe the big monologue could have been trimmed a bit) but girl left it all on the table with her performance. The story is simple but gives us just enough insight to really get Pearl's backstory. It's a non-typical slasher that is a character study first that mostly works for me honestly. Ti West has a style that is distinctly his and I appreciated his homages here. I can't wait for that third movie!!!
Tumblr media
11. [Rec] - I liked this movie quite a bit. Found footage done right as far as I'm concerned. Certainly a rollercoaster once it gets going. The ending is totally stressful to watch imo. I may end up watching the sequels someday just because. We'll see. Regardless, I'm glad I finally watched this one. Lived up to the hype.
Tumblr media
12. House of the Devil - Now, this is the Ti West movie that a lot of people may not have heard of before but I do think it's worth checking out if you like his filmography to see his journey as a director. Once again, a slow burner that pays homage to the horror movies that have come before. It's nothing that is reinventing the wheel but it's solid imo. I was rooting for Samantha to make it out of this thing alive. Loved seeing some familiar faces in there as well.
Tumblr media
13. Saint Maud's - I don't know if I anticipated this being placed on the Faves list initially but I can't forget that lead performance by Morfydd Clark. She was just so good in her role. The visuals throughout were great and there was a chilling aesthetic the whole time. That ending was just plain bonkers. Can't help putting it on this list.
Tumblr media
14. Nope - Now, despite this movie maybe not totally living up to my expectations (blame Jordan Peele's track record of blowing my mind with his stories), I gotta put it on the Faves list. Visually, this was an event. The cast was too good. I was invested. I can also appreciate the fact that Jordan went against the audience's expectations as well. I'm just glad this man is making movies for the horror genre honestly. Can't wait to see what he comes up with next.
Tumblr media
15. Barbarian - I am so glad that I waited to watch this on Halloween because even if my watches after it never went quite on par with this movie's experience, it was a great way to end the challenge this year. I knew while watching it that it was gonna be on this list for sure. Great cast, solid script, nice direction. Idk what else to say but I personally enjoyed it.
Tumblr media
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Watcher - This originally seemed like it might make its way onto the Faves early on because I wasn't sure how many watches I was going to like this year. It was a hit or miss with some as always. It feels like a tradition now that I have to watch a Maika Monroe horror movie at some point during a challenge, and this year I got to watch two. This was the better one for me. I felt her fear. The aesthetic was stylish. It was a simple movie with a big finish. A pleasant surprise. Also, I really love that poster.
Tumblr media
2. Fresh - I think if I had liked this movie a little bit more it could have gotten on the Faves list instead of the Honorable Mentions but I do still think it was a good movie. Daisy was wonderful. Liked that her character did what she had to do to get out of her situation. So, she definitely made it easy to root for Noa.
Tumblr media
3. Society - With an ending that is quite frankly one of the grossiest things I've ever seen on screen, I can't help but think this movie still deserves this spot. Definitely not leaving the memory bank any time soon. Very wild. Probably could have been stronger narratively but it does ask some interesting questions that may make you think. The effects are impressive for sure. It's gonna make you uncomfortable but if you're into that sort of thing (I didn't think I was but okay lol), it's kinda worth it??
Tumblr media
4. We Are Still Here - When I was watching this, I don't think I expected to put it on the Faves or even this list but the more I think on it, I kinda liked it. I watched it for Barbara Crampton but as a slow burner, it did work enough for me. There's plot things keeping me from being able to put it on the Faves level, but considering it took me a minute to get invested while watching, it's impressive that it's on at least this one. But the overall feel and the acting makes it feel deserved so there's that.
Tumblr media
5. May & Sissy - As always I was having a hard time picking my last spot for this because even though these movies may have their flaws, I can't help looking back on both of these performances. Both were great and honestly, their narratives are quite similiar. At the core of it, it's a story centered on a socially awkward woman who just wants to be accepted by others, and yet, you can tell that's still not enough for them. They need more. These movies start as character studies that gradually become slashers. Not too much different from Pearl tbh. I preferred that movie to these, but both still are worth watching imo. Tho more May I'd say probably, but I love Aisha Dee as an actress so I had to add Sissy here. lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LEAST FAVE WATCHES
The Rental - Now while not completely awful, this was not a great second watch for the challenge because, despite a stellar cast, I was not invested at all. The characters were not likable, even poor Jeremy Allen White's because the writing makes him pitiful imo. As a directorial debut by Dave Franco, I think it showed promise for him if he chooses to make more movies in the future. But I gotta put it on the list because I was really disappointed with how average it was with the talent involved with it. The ending just made me think what was the point of the whole thing if we're not invested with the characters at all.
Tumblr media
2. Old - I remember this movie making me mad. lol Like, I just didn't like it at all. I even went into it knowing that I would most likely be disappointed, and yet, with this challenge sometimes I feel like I need to actually watch these things to know I'm right. The concept was intriguing but the execution was not good imo. The plot holes!! M. Night Shyamalan is a hit or miss with his movies tbh and I tried to go into it with an open mind knowing that fact. At least if I had been having fun watching it I could have excused it, but even with the notable faces in there, I just couldn't enjoy it. Sorry, you can't help how you feel about movies sometimes.
Tumblr media
3. Who Invited Them - This felt like such a non-horror movie for too long to even be called a slow burner imo. Because it focused on the couple's problems too much instead of creating actual tension to make us worried if they were gonna survive or not. And then when the horror element came in, it came in too quickly like it was tacked on so they could deem it a horror movie. And the ending is plothole central. I can't. Overall, it was boring. Shudder originals are such a hit-or miss tbh.
Tumblr media
4. Antichrist - This shit was kinda wild but had me so confused. lol I get it's an arthouse film at the end of the day but it's clearly not meant for me. I commend Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg for their performances, that's the best part along with the cinematography. The whole thing was quite a fever dream. I still can't believe the way they chose to depict that opening scene. Still a major WTF. But I guess I won't forget it. lol
Tumblr media
5. They/Them - As a horror movie, this was not good imo. It totally forgets it's a horror movie until near the end. The killer aspect feels tacked on. There really does need to be more LGBTQ rep in horror, that is a given. This was a great opportunity for that with a cast showing wonderful potential but the execution is what I can't get over. But as I've said before in my post, with a concept like this, if you take away the masked killer aspect, you had a good movie in there, save for some cringey moments (particularly that scene where they sing Pink a little way too long for my taste personally) I wanted to give this a chance, despite the super bad rating, but I was disappointed.
Tumblr media
6. Umma - I wanted to like this so bad for Sandra Oh because she's truly superb and Fivel Stewart gave her nice support but this turned out to be a snoozer. I really tried but I gotta agree with the haters cuz this was not worth checking out sadly. Unfortunately, the bad IMDB rating was earned. It should have been so much better than it was. No tension and way too many jumpscares are a horrible combo. Those two things for me are a no-no.
Tumblr media
7. The Keep - Now, while the actual demon was cringey for me even by 80's standards, I wouldn't have necessarily put this movie on this particular list for that reason alone if it had at least made sense narratively. But it didn't. Too many plot points missing. But I won't blame Michael Mann on this since we never got the full vision. Let's blame the studio heads for not at least letting us see if it would have been clearer with that extra footage needed. Because you can tell it was meant to be this big epic that sadly isn't coherent as it should be without it. But hey, there were some good actors in there so that was cool.
Tumblr media
8. Queen of the Damned - Honestly, this movie would have benefitted from having even more Aaliyah in it because she was my favorite part of the whole thing. I appreciated how she just went for it. And she was stunning as ever. Still sad we lost her way too soon. Otherwise, I could have gone without ever watching this movie. Lestat should not have been the main focus, I'm sorry. Stuart Townsend tried but I just feel like he never embodied that character the way he was meant to. The story was weak. As I said, aside from watching Aaliyah, the music is the very best thing about it so there's that. lol
Tumblr media
9. Possession - I really wanted to add one of the movie posters because at least that was cool but stupid Tumblr with their stupid 30-image limit in posts like these. Oh well. As I already said in my post for it, I was very disappointed with this and was also very confused. The scream matches throughout got super old quickly. I barely felt invested at all. Isabelle Adjani & Sam Neill were giving it all they had but that doesn't change the fact that it was overly dramatic at parts. I couldn't even tell if it was trying to be campy. I promise I tried to give it a chance but from the very beginning, I had a feeling this was going to be on this list.
10. Halloween Ends - Honestly, it pains me that this had be added to this list after Halloween Kills had been on it for last year's but well... Sorry, this just does not feel like this is how the trilogy was supposed to end. You do not center a final movie around a new character that you're banking an audience to get invested in. Rohan Campbell did the best he could acting-wise, I am not knocking him for that. But everyone knows this was supposed to be about Laurie vs. Michael. I don't care how anyone tries to spin it, that's just a fact. At the very least, that was the expectation. And on top of that, after diving into almost complete parody in Kills, they went almost too serious with this one. Where was the fun? I'll admit the opening and the ending stood out as I'm sure they were hoping for, but that middle... I'm just so torn about everything involving this movie I guess. lol It could have been so much better. I don't know what else to say. For some people Halloween III would probably be in this spot over Halloween Ends, but nope. Even with that movie's flaws, it's not really pretending to be anything other than what it is so I'm not gonna put it here.
(The only reason why Knock Knock didn't make it on this list was because it was meant as a hate watch and I never expected it to be a fave or change my mind what it was going to be. Also, I really wanted to keep the list to just 10 this year. Antlers almost made it on here as well.)
COULDN'T FINISH (new section just cuz lol)
Broadcast Signal Intrusion - Sorry Harry Shum Jr. I tried so hard to watch this one for you, and I almost made it to the end but I was soooo bored and confused. At one point, it had gotten my full attention, and then immediately lost it before I ended up calling it quits. Just was not for me I guess.
2. Choose or Die - I struggle watched this for like 15 minutes max before turning it off because I could tell instantly that this was not going to be my cup of tea. And I do not regret that decision at all. The second I saw how gory it was going to be with a plot that did not have me, I knew it was time to tune out. My work friend who is usually more game for these kinda concepts was not feeling it either so that makes me feel even better about that decision. lol
3. The Killing of a Sacred Deer - I started this and did not get too far with it because something about it just felt a little too... pretentious?? Idk. I like both the leads as actors so I wanted to check it out. But I couldn't get into it. I know based on that IMDB rating that it clearly has some fans so maybe I can check it out again in the future but this definitely turned out to not be that year I guess. heh
There were probably a few more movies that I could have listed for that last category but these are the ones I remember off the top of my head. These lists are always really hard for me to put together because let's face it, I'm no movie critic. I don't pretend to be but I have particular taste. I try to keep an open mind and I have fun with this challenge. And I like ranting about my watches at the end here. lol Anyway, another challenge done. Here's to next year!

Robin Hood episode ranking part 1 (39-33)
I recently finished a rewatch of BBC’s Robin Hood. I’ve seen the show all the way through about three times now, though I’ve watched a lot of season 1 and 2 separately as well. This time I was watching with someone who had never seen the show. On top of that, we watched it in a non-chronological order, which made me view many of the episodes in a different light. So, I (with my friend) decided to rank all 39 episodes from worst to best.
I’ll be splitting this ranking into 5 parts, because the whole thing ended up being 14 pages long. We tried to take into account how good the episodes are objectively from a narrative point of view, but ultimately in many places our own enjoyment determined the final placements. Feel free to agree or disagree with me. I’d also like to add that when I say an episode is “bad”, I mean it in the context of the show. I’ve seen a lot worse things on TV than anything on this show. Nothing in this show is so bad it’s unwatchable. Anyway, here’s part 1 with places 39–33.
39. 3x1 – Total Eclipse
This episode just… isn’t that good. The plot feels messy and even though it’s supposed to emotionally rely on the events of the season 2 finale, it ends up feeling hollow and empty. Robin and Gisborne have some classic Man Pain angst revolving around Marian’s death, but she’s just reduced to someone they both loved. It’s not like she was an actual person who had other qualities beyond being the love interest. It doesn’t help that this is really the only season 3 episode where her death is properly addressed. Overall, Gisborne and Robin are both even more annoying than usual in this episode. The other outlaws are just given something to pass the time while Robin wallows in his own angst, and I didn’t care about anything going on in the episode. Tuck is an alright character, but he’s better later on in the season. In this episode he just does things to advance the plot, and I didn’t find him that interesting. For some reason, the aesthetic for this episode also seemed to be “let’s make everyone look like drowned dogs”. There might be some positive aspects to this episode, but I honestly don’t remember them, which is why it’s at the bottom of this list. I have no real interest in rewatching this episode any time soon.
 38. 3x5 – Let the Games Commence
I had honestly forgotten how bad this episode is. The A and B plotlines have nothing to do with each other, and both are bad. Why is there a lion? What did the circus plot add to the story? Isabella’s introduction is the only positive thing in this episode, but even that could have been done in a more interesting way. I also do have to add that they did a good job casting Isabella, since my friend guessed that she is Gisborne’s sister before it was even revealed. Overall, this episode could be skipped if not for the fact that it introduces Isabella. The plot feels useless and it doesn’t even have the fun sense of adventure that many episodes in season 2 had.
 37. 3x7 – Too Hot to Handle
Why was this episode so sexual? The “romance” felt incredibly forced. Robin and Isabella’s relationship moves too fast, and I do not enjoy watching it. Kate’s jealousy doesn’t help either. The plot is stupid, and the characters make equally stupid decisions. Robin is almost as annoying in this episode as he is in 3x1, but since the plot is at least a little bit more interesting, this episode is above it in the ranking.
 36. 3x9 – A Dangerous Deal
What is it with this season and trying to pair off teenage girls (or at least characters that are written as such) with fully grown men? Meg had so much potential, which was then wasted by throwing her into a one-episode “romance” with Gisborne. The two of them could have made a completely platonic connection to advance the plot in a similar way, there was no need to make it romantic. Another pairing I hate in this episode was Robin and Kate. I felt my spine crack into small pieces every time I had to watch the two of them have a moment together. Robin talks to Kate like she is a child (and since she is written as if she’s a teenager, I don’t blame him for it), yet for some reason I’m supposed to believe that the two of them like each other romantically? Thanks, but no thanks. Isabella’s husband is a character that fills me with rage, and this episode would have been improved if he had gotten stabbed in the eye within the first five minutes. I like that Isabella got to be the one to kill him and that she didn’t need to be saved by someone else. Unfortunately, the show then gets hypocritical and frames this as a bad thing. Robin has spent the show killing people left and right, but when Isabella kills her abusive husband – during a time when divorce was not an option and she had no protection against him – it’s suddenly much worse than anything Robin has ever done? Isabella, like Meg and Kate, had so much potential, but the show decided to make her into a villain by painting her as “the crazy bitch” for no good reason. I remembered this episode to be better than what it was, and I was disappointed when I rewatched it.
 35. 3x3 – Lost in Translation
The one thing I remember the best from watching this episode is that after we were done, we read the Wikipedia article on the history of Bible translations. The actual plot of the episode doesn’t tie into anything, and nothing relevant happens. The priest or whoever annoyed us, as did Tuck. The characters, in true season 3 manner, made stupid decisions. This is one of the most skippable episodes in the whole series. The plot of the episode is bad, but not as terrible as the negative aspects of the previous episodes on this list, which is why it’s ranked higher.
 34. 3x2 – Cause and Effect
This episode goes into the same category as 3x3 in terms of being very forgettable. The guest characters are alright, but they don’t add that much to the story to lift this episode any higher. The only thing in this episode that has anything to do with the rest of the reason is the introduction of Kate. It’s not her best episode, but it’s also not the worst. The episode was slightly more interesting than 3x3, but other than that, I barely remember either of these episodes.
 33. 1x10 – Peace? Off!
If I wasn’t at least a little bit reasonable, this episode would be at the bottom of the list. I am, however, also spiteful, which is why this is ranked so low. Why? I hate the ninja women with a burning passion. Nothing in this show makes me as irrationally angry as they do. It pains me to even think about this episode because I am then forced to think about the ninja women. Other than them, I feel like this episode suffers from having too many smaller themes in one episode. At first the episode felt a bit confusing, since there was so much going on. The one great thing about this episode is Much. His scenes are amazing, and if the episode consisted of only them, this might easily have ended up in the top 10. Unfortunately, rather than focusing on Much and Harold working through their trauma, they decided to shove in the ninja women, and for that this episode must be punished.
This part ended up being quite negative, but we had to start somewhere. If you feel as disappointed by season 3 as I do, you should read through my “Kate should have been the new Nightwatchman” rant [link]. In part 2 of the ranking we’ll go through places 32–26. All the parts will eventually be under the #rh-episode-ranking tag [link].

i hope there’s a timeline where endgame is good and the Me in that timeline is having fun and thriving
review under the cut
the best word to describe my emotional state right now is depressed, and not for the reasons the russos were hoping i’d be depressed. endgame is an enigma, endgame feels so much like that one scene in get out where georgina is crying to get out of the sunken place. a good movie is in there somewhere but you’d have to kill this one to get to it
what makes me the most angry about this movie is that i didn’t hate it, i couldn’t hate all of it. some of it was just so charming and nostalgic, it felt so good. this movie had.... Potential and then it said “fuck potential, fuck that bitch”
i guess i’ll start where i’m sure most people want me to start
1. We Need To Talk About Thor
thor, surprisingly, is the character i have the most mixed feelings about. don’t get it twisted, he was a walking fat joke and ooc for a substantial amount of screentime but hemsworth...... hemsworth earned a paycheck or two. hemsworth could’ve half-assed his performance, but he didn’t. but everything was still Not Good. everytime there was something genuinely good put on the screen it was shot down by a fat joke. the scene with him and frigga? changed me. the scene where he’s obviously triggered by the mention of thanos? heartbreaking. him being so excited when he resuscitates tony? super cute! him finding out he’s still worthy? UGH I CAN’T. but it was undercut by fat jokes EVERY TIME. he’s obviously suffering but like, he’s CUTE fat with his soft looking arms and his round cheeks. and that look he puts together for the end battle? loved it! cutieeee he just needs a shower!!! my baby!!!
and he reacted to jane but not LOKI??? HELLO??? FDBHJELUDVLBJIG
his ending was straight trash. and a HANDSHAKE?? the indignity!!! the disrespect to their romance is like......... what the hell? AND HIM LEAVING ASGARD??? NO ONE SAID YOU HAD TO BE KING???? YOU COULD STAY AND HELP VAL GET HER KINGDOM TOGETHER? WHY WOULD YOU LEAVE YOUR PEOPLE BEHIND LIKE YOU DIDN’T LOSE EVERYTHING FOR THEM IN RAGNAROK??? i hate markus & mcfeely so much fucking....
AND YOU’RE TELLING ME VAL JUST LET THOR BECOME AN ALCOHOLIC????????????? kill me
2. Steve’s Ending
Hated It!
so OKAY i’m meant to believe that steve’s harbored feelings for peggy for all this time, even when he kissed sharon? i’m not even upset for steve, i’m upset for everyone else: sharon, bucky, sam. like, what crackhead thought that would be satisfying??? how does that complete his arc? returning to peggy? peggy’s DEAD and he barely knew her!!!! this is not at all how i wanted sambucky to rise
3. Racism
hoooo boy someone’s about to be mad at my black ass
clint’s aesthetic and introduction after the 5 year jump is racist. so you mean to tell me that his whole family died so he dedicated his life to beating brown and asian folk up? with a generic japanese tat? i have to laugh
and the fact that okoye is in the very beginning and very end and that’s it? laughable. fury has no lines? laughable. rhodey barely gets time with tony before he dies? laughable. shuri says nothing? laughable. mantis is just there to be a joke again? laughable. produced by james gunn? laughable
4. The Treatment of Women
you know what? i can’t
5. Fuck Tony
6. The Russos Hate You If You’re Gay
joe russo thinks he can be your representation
7. This Timeline is FUCKED
nothing makes sense, not any of it. they tried explaining it away with “multiple timelines” but............. it’s not good enough!!! it’s not!!!! nothing makes sense!!!! and the disrespect to scott lang??????????? hewwo?????
8. There’s A Good Movie Under There Somewhere
we need to, unfortunately, talk about the fact that i enjoyed a lot of this movie. i might be brain dead and grasping for any light in this dark abyss, but i didn’t think it was unwatchable in the same way that infinity war definitely is. there was emotion, and natasha emoted, and thor addressed his own depression even if no one else in the world seemed to care beyond pitying and laughing at him
idk.... so many scenes. steve fighting himself, weird in-between hulk, new asgard.... these were all things i liked but GOD they were spat on over and over and the endings were too shitty to salvage them AND HOW IS PETER AND HIS CLASSMATES STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL??? DID THEY ALL GET SNAPPED
9. Best Actors
cheadle, rudd, hemsworth, paltrow, holland
10. FUCK tony
11. Final Score Because I’m Tired Of Thinking About This Movie
4.6/10

i  started  roleplaying : i first started on some fourms ??? on an app on my itouch ??? but my first tumblr rp group was percy jackson and everyone though i was this all knowing pjo fan... when really i was just fast to look shit up on the wikia. i had never read a single page of the series. types  of  rps  i  enjoy :  fandoms, typically ! i used to be exclusively love animated roleplays? like cartoons? but then i transitioned to musicals? like, exclusively playing musical characters??? at this point, tara is like the one exception nowadays... favorite  fcs  to  use :  um... olivia holt is a recent fave? joshua basset, also. my old faves are mary kate wiles and hunter parrish tho. real old. otherwise, i don’t know if i’d say i get attached to fc’s? fandom  (  s  )  you’d  like  to  write  in : i kinda wanna go back to some of my cartoon roots, maybe? i really haven’t deviated from the same 8 - 9 mostly musical characters in literally years...  fandom  (  s  )  you  aren’t  in  but  are  curious  about :  um... the raven cycle ,  miraculous ladybug  , uh..... everything else. i’m so randomly interested in everything.
share  a  funny  roleplay  horror  story :  my favorite is when i was in a youtuber rpf / oc rp, and this girl... made an oc... and made the fc... herself. she made a literal self-insert oc. with herself as the face. like low-res gifs of herself. why, you ask? i think she was trying to ship herself with dan howell. that didn’t age well, did it?

i  prefer  .  .  . angst  ,  smut  ,  or  fluff :  i am a massive sucker for fluff, but i’m so guilty of angst... i love pain. i don’t really do smut tho. sorry. long  or  short  replies :  i generally prefer short replies, unless we’ve somehow developed a thread into something long. or i’m feeling particularly inspired. pre  plotting  or  chemistry : i love chemistry with all my heart, but sometimes it’s fun to plot past connections that can reignite? idk. mostly chemistry sentence  starters  or  headcanon  memes : headcanon memes, because im never creative to turn a sentence starter into something that makes sense, esp between two characters who don’t know each other. single  muse  or  multimuse  blogs :  multimuse, because i spent too many years reblogging replies to the wrong sideblog and those days are over !!! gif  icons  ,  medium  gifs  ,  or  static  icons : i prefer gif icons for shorter replies and medium gifs for longer ones... or whatever my partner is using. i like some sort of consistency.
grab  the  book  nearest  to  you  and  pull  a  quote  from  it : ‘ what’s the rush? ’ repeat this phase when you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed out. ask yourself whether somethings really needs doing immediately. are you ignoring your needs in order to do it?  - the little book of sloth philosophy.
what’s  a  quote  or  song  lyric  that  speaks  to  your  soul  ? : “ did you fall? or did you let go? ”  -  connor murphy to evan hansen, dear evan hansen. ( idk why this immediately jump to mind but... )

greased lightin’ from grease live ; oh mother by hunter parrish ; nerds by bo burnham ; a miracle would happen / when you come home to me from the last five years ; just another day from next to normal ; who tells your story from hamilton mixtape.
i haven’t listened to any of these in forever, but i am still, indeed, musical theater trash.
personal  aesthetic : demin overalls, scrunchies, the color teal, big stuffed animals. dream  vacation  ? : somewhere beautiful with people i love. dream  job  ? : perhaps like designing custom 3D prosthetics dream  car  ? :  i hate driving, but a big ol’ truck. like suv. big one. favorite  musical : gospell, dear evan hansen, bandstand, newsies, shrek the musical, mamma mia, i could go on... unwatched  stuff  in  your  netflix  /  hulu  /  etc :  sailor moon crystal, crash landing on you, locke & key, all the bright places, the half of it, younger, meteor, hello my twenties ...

name  /  alias : leigh  gender  /  pronouns : female + she/her where  ya  from  ? : europe 👀 the  current  time :  18:53 height :  164 cm, i think that’s 5′4 job  or  major :  double major in sociology and media communications, still grinding pet  (  s  ) :  two dogs! one is a 7 year old maltese and the other a 3 year old cane corso favorite  thing  (  s  )  about  yourself :  im a great listener and i give great advice, i’m straighforward which some people don’t like but oh well, i’m pretty adaptable. i got some nice titties any  special  talents  ? :  i can roll my tounge in any direction + crack a lot of knuckles ajkdshaj
why  you  joined  hqclouds :  i’ve been itchng to write more lately, so when love told me about their group i thought i’d give it a shot !!
meaning  behind  url :  strawberry moon was just a recent occurance irl which was really cool + i associate marinette with strawberries for some reason, and i’m a big fan of the lady moon
last  thing  you  googled :  i’m having some issues with my michrophone and zoom so i googled how to fix it, but no dice
birthday  /  zodiac :  leo ! my birthday is august 11th in  your  opinion  ,  does  your  sign  suit  you  ? : yes and no. leo’s are very misunderstood imo, but each sign has the “more popular” or well known traits and then there’s the flipside of the coin—which i think suits me more myers  -  briggs :  ISFP / INFP moral  alignment :  chaotic idiot hogwarts  house : gryffindor
three  fictional  character  (  s  )  you  see  yourself  in  +  why :  i honestly see myself in katara from atla, the whole smothering mothering routine. it’s becoming a regular thing for my friends to say “thanks, mom” or “ok, mom” so i guess i’m the mom friend. also fred weasly... he’s a twin.. i’m a twin... that’s all i need. and lastly, and very leastly, neil josten from all for the game series. most of you probably don’t know it, but he’s a demisexual chaotic idiot who says “i’m fine” way too much for someone who is most definitely not fine.
i  started  roleplaying : probably when i was around 16-17 was my first official roleplay experience. it was on facebook and kind of a nightmare types  of  rps  i  enjoy :  i like college stuff and small town rps, but i also love plot heavy rps that push you into developing your muse. really anything that isn’t too restricting favorite  fcs  to  use :  i don’t have go-to faceclaims. i tend to make a character around a FC and then use them until i lose muse or just feel like they need to rest. switch it up a lot, but some faces that i’ve really enjoyed playing for a longer amount of time are steven kelly, cindy mello and ellen v. lora fandom  (  s  )  you’d  like  to  write  in : i want to write in all of the fandoms i know nothing about and look like a dumbass. also harry potter, the hunger games, avatar the last airbender, gossip girl, etc etc fandom  (  s  )  you  aren’t  in  but  are  curious  about :  marvel somewhat, any video games are very fascinating to me even though i’m not a gamer + know nothing about them, any distopian kind of fandom re: hunger games
share  a  funny  roleplay  horror  story :  recently an admin of a twitter rp tried to use my male muse for their weird ship narrative. they tried to make him look like an asshole (& i do play assholes but this one wasn’t one) + used another male muse to make it seem as if these two boys were fighting over the person’s girl, even though she actually had a ship all lined up. they were also running the gossip twitter, so they made up a bunch of stuff about our muses without our consent and consequently i told them to fuck off, and both of us left the group. then she had no more “groupies” so she cuffed and the group closed two days later. it was petty hilarious.
fondest  roleplay  memory :  once in an OC group, i wasn’t “technically” doing a ship with a friend, even though the characters had feelings for each other. but for some reason the status of their relationship was a hot topic group wide, meaning everybody had their nose in it and wanting to know what’s up, so they publically kept doing things to make people think they’re together while denying it in the same breath. it was really fun to let it play out like that.
favorite  canon  muse  (  s  )  to  play : roy mustang from fullmetal alchemist, katara from atla, and my baby marinette favorite  original  muse  (  s  )  to  play : the last original character i played and fell in love with was named alex. im obsessed with him. still doing 1 x 1 with his girlfriend. they’re having a baby, it’s all very emo and domestic. maybe i make him relapse for funsies. canon  ships  you  can’t  help  but  love :  lupin x tonks from harry potter, korra x asami from legend of korra, danerys x daario naharis from game of thrones, katniss x peeta from the hunger games, etc... trope  (  s  )  you  tend  to  be  guilty  of : i use the rich kid douchebag stereotype a lot. i also make a lot of my characters addicted to something to make them struggle with that.
i  prefer  .  .  . angst  ,  smut  ,  or  fluff :  bro... i am a sucker for ansgt and smut. i do fluff on special ocassions >:) long  or  short  replies :  i prefer when they start out shorter, but medium is my fave pre  plotting  or  chemistry : chemistry all the way. plotting can be really fun but it’s a miss more often than a hit for me. plotting can be good for pre-established relationships but that’s about it sentence  starters  or  headcanon  memes : sentence starters single  muse  or  multimuse  blogs :  i’ve never done a multimuse blog, and i’ve actually been super against them in the past, but i’m starting to change my mind hehe gif  icons  ,  medium  gifs  ,  or  static  icons : static (or none honestly)
grab  the  book  nearest  to  you  and  pull  a  quote  from  it :  ❝ You were children. was there no one to protect you? ❞ — ❝ Was there no one to protect you? ❞
what’s  a  quote  or  song  lyric  that  speaks  to  your  soul  ? :  ❝ I loved her, and sometimes, she loved me too ❞
top  current  celebrity  crushes :  zendaya, margot robbie always last  movie  you  watched :  365 days (2020) did  you  like  it  ? :  i hated it, what a waste of a perfectly good 2 hours  favorite  movie  (  s  )    of  all  time : harry potter franchise makes me nostalgic, perks of being a wallflower, my sister’s keeper favorite  tv  show  (  s  )  of  all  time : for some reason i’m obsessed with grey’s anatomy but i hate it favorite  tv  show  that  hasn’t  ended : well fricking grey’s anatomy favorite  series  of  books  /  novels  /  comics : the hunger games, harry potter sports  team  (  s  )  you  rep : my friend is into sports i rep her ksdsdj favorite  video  game  (  s  ) : the sims. i like playing animal crossing vicariously through switch owners favorite  youtube  channels : don’t usually keep up with yt channels but i just binged some stuff from psychology in seattle hobbies :  procrastinating
what  are  the  three  non  essential  things  you’d  bring  to  a  deserted  island  ? : sunglasses, hairtie, hand cream
put  your  music  on  shuffle.  what  six  songs  pop  up  ? :
say goodbye by skillet,
off the grid by alina baraz & khalid,
bury a friend by billie eilish,
break up with your girlfriend by ariana grande
get back by nine lashes
marry you by bruno mars (man)
personal  aesthetic : growing out my hair only to always wear it in a bun dream  vacation  ? : i just wanna go to the seaside with my friends dream  job  ? :  i literally can’t stand capitalism. wanna move to italy and collect berries and draw titties all day dream  car  ? :  something that drives itself if  i  could  live  anywhere  ,  it’d  be : somewhere in canada near the woods favorite  musical : mama mia? counts favorite  food  (  s  ) :  bananaaaaas, ice cream, cereal. these are all foods ok coffee  order : i don’t drink coffee unwatched  stuff  in  your  netflix  /  hulu  /  etc :  13 reasons why (i’m too bored), the flash, outer banks, elite, the half of it, intersteller, locke & key aaand some stuff that’s not mine but someone else using my account

The Director’s Series: David Lynch
The director series will consist of me concentrating on the filmography of all my favorite directors. I will rank each of their films according to my personal taste. I hope this project will provide everyone with quality recommendations and insight into films that they might not have known about.
Today’s director in spotlight is David Lynch
#10 - Dune (1984) Runtime: 2 hr 17 min Aspect Ratio: 2.35 : 1 Film Format: 35mm
Tumblr media
In the year 10,191, the world is at war for control of the desert planet Dune – the only place where the time-travel substance ‘Spice’ can be found. But when one leader gives up control, it’s only so he can stage a coup with some unsavory characters.
Verdict: Most directors who make enough films will always have a few misses. Dune is almost unwatchable with its convoluted storyline that will confuse anyone who hasn’t read the novel. I’ll give it this - the set and costume design are out of this world, no pun intended.
#9 - The Straight Story (1999) Runtime: 1 hr 52 min Aspect Ratio: 2.39 : 1 Film Format: 35 mm
Tumblr media
A retired farmer and widower in his 70s, Alvin Straight learns one day that his distant brother Lyle has suffered a stroke and may not recover. Alvin is determined to make things right with Lyle while he still can, but his brother lives in Wisconsin, while Alvin is stuck in Iowa with no car and no driver’s license. Then he hits on the idea of making the trip on his old lawnmower, thus beginning a picturesque and at times deeply spiritual odyssey.
Verdict: The only one of Lynch’s films that could be considered purely “heartwarming”. It also feels the least like a Lynch film, with the director never really foraying into his autuerist territory. It is a simple, cute film that didn’t exactly leave much of an impression on me.
#8 - Lost Highway (1997) Runtime: 2 hr 14 min Aspect Ratio: 2.35 : 1 Film Format: 35mm
Tumblr media
A tormented jazz musician finds himself lost in an enigmatic story involving murder, surveillance, gangsters, doppelgangers, and an impossible transformation inside a prison cell.
Verdict: Lost Highway has a few scenes that I find to be the most bone-chilling in Lynch’s oeuvre. However, I wish that the entirety of this film had the same effect on me. There are more than enough satisfying plot elements to this, but I also feel like Lynch utilizing a modern soundtrack more than Badalementi’s superb score really does make this film feel dated.
#7 - The Elephant Man (1980) Runtime: 2 hr 4 min Aspect Ratio: 2.35 : 1 Film Format: 35mm
Tumblr media
A Victorian surgeon rescues a heavily disfigured man being mistreated by his “owner” as a side-show freak. Behind his monstrous façade, there is revealed a person of great intelligence and sensitivity. Based on the true story of Joseph Merrick, a severely deformed man in 19th century London.
Verdict: The Elephant Man showcases how cruel human nature can be. It is one of Lynch’s most sentimental works that manages to be both horrendous and beautiful. John Hurt’s performance as the “elephant man” is multilayered and one of the most impressive, humanistic feats of an artist embodying a character with the utmost ingenuity.
#6 - Blue Velvet (1986) Runtime: 2 hr Aspect Ratio: 2.35 : 1 Film Format: 35mm
Tumblr media
The discovery of a severed human ear found in a field leads a young man on an investigation related to a beautiful, mysterious nightclub singer and a group of criminals who have kidnapped her child.
Verdict: This is Lynch’s detective film, and I would say one of the best starting films for someone looking to get into his work. It has all of the surrealist plot motifs we come to expect from Lynch, but also has a pretty understandable storyline for the most part. Blue Velvet explores the dark underbelly beneath the fake “harmless” veneer of a seemingly quiet and peaceful small town.
#5 - Wild at Heart (1990) Runtime: 2 hr 5 min Aspect Ratio: 2.35 : 1 Film Format: 35mm
Tumblr media
Young lovers Sailor and Lula run from the variety of weirdos that Lula’s mom has hired to kill Sailor.
Verdict: Many might not see Wild at Heart as one of Lynch’s strongest works, but I personally find it to be the most fun film he has ever made. Lynch creates such a wide variety of scummy characters that truly make your stomach church (I am looking at you Willem Dafoe). It’s one of those so-bad-it’s-perfect movies and the Wizard of Oz allusions are a great addition to the story.
#4 - Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992) Runtime: 2 hr 14 min Aspect Ratio: 1.85 : 1 Film Format: 35mm
Tumblr media
In the questionable town of Deer Meadow, Washington, FBI Agent Desmond inexplicably disappears while hunting for the man who murdered a teen girl. The killer is never apprehended, and, after experiencing dark visions and supernatural encounters, Agent Dale Cooper chillingly predicts that the culprit will claim another life. Meanwhile, in the more cozy town of Twin Peaks, hedonistic beauty Laura Palmer hangs with lowlifes and seems destined for a grisly fate. Verdict: I think it’s a real shame that this film was held in such low regard by both critics and fans alike when it was released. These people seemed to be truly confused as to the types of films Lynch makes. Thankfully, it has developed into a real cult classic since then. This film, which also serves as a prequel to the iconic television series, abandons the campy tone of the series and is Lynch achieving the vision that he wanted from the show. It’s a beautiful, haunting, and heartbreaking story.
#3 - Inland Empire (2006) Runtime: 3 hr Aspect Ratio: 1.85 : 1 Film Format: Mini DV & 35mm
Tumblr media
An actress’s perception of reality becomes increasingly distorted as she finds herself falling for her co-star in a remake of an unfinished Polish production that was supposedly cursed.
Verdict: Lynch has yet to make a feature film since this one, and it truly is the director going off the rails with his style in the best of ways. Inland Empire is almost completely impossible to describe because it is more of an experience than it is a structured narrative. It returns to Lynch’s often-used idea of “hollywood is hell”. To me, this is Lynch’s scariest film. It’s utterly hopeless and the pixelated DV cinematography exudes a very cold and artificial aesthetic. Laura Dern deserved an Oscar for her performance as an actress who confuses her own life to the character she is playing.
#2 - Mulholland Drive (2001) Runtime: 2 hr 27 min Aspect Ratio: 1.85 : 1 Film Format: 35mm
Tumblr media
Blonde Betty Elms has only just arrived in Hollywood to become a movie star when she meets an enigmatic brunette with amnesia. Meanwhile, as the two set off to solve the second woman’s identity, filmmaker Adam Kesher runs into ominous trouble while casting his latest project.
Verdict: You will very rarely find such a perfect masterpiece of a film, but Mulholland Drive manages to do that. It also seems to reveal new layers every time I revisit. Lynch blurs the lines between the dream world and reality so masterfully in this film that it really does linger in your subconscious afterward - much akin to a haunting dream that you can’t seem to shake. Naomi Watts is electric as an LA newcomer who gets involved in the dark recesses of Hollywood.
#1 - Eraserhead (1977) Duration: 1 hr 29 min Aspect Ratio: 1.85 : 1 Film Format: 35mm
Tumblr media
Henry Spencer tries to survive his industrial environment, his angry girlfriend, and the unbearable screams of his newly born mutant child.
Verdict: By no means am I trying to say Eraserhead is Lynch’s “best” film - but for me it will probably always remain my personal favorite. This was my introduction to Lynch’s work and it holds a very sentimental spot for me as this was the time in my life when I really began exploring experimental film. Eraserhead is set in a dystopia that could also serve as an alternate reality altogether. Henry Spencer has to deal with his demanding wife and deformed child while daydreaming of a singing woman in the radiator. This is Lynch at his most surrealist, his most uncompromising, and his most nauseating. It truly is one the most impressive low-budget films ever made. It manages a fine line between repulsion and transcendence.

Binge-Watching: Black Bullet, Episodes 1-3
And so we begin! In which I remember how fun it is when anime is allowed to be fun, the simplest details make all the different, and I admire a kind of hero I’ve seen too little of lately.
And I Feel Fine
Anime trends fascinate me as a modern viewer. I’ve only started paying attention to this medium for a little over two years now, but I’ve watched works spanning pretty much every year of the past few decades. I’ve seen the ways storytelling tendencies develop and evolve over time, the kinds of stories told fall in and out of fashion, different techniques and fascinations and tropes bounce back and forth as they come into new permutations of themselves. It can be so easy to forget today that not every fantasy was an isekai, not every protagonist was generically nice, not every aesthetic choice we take for granted was always the status quo. Even just five years ago, the kind of pulpy, mass entertainment action spectacles studios pumped out on the regular feel almost like a foreign entity in today’s world of RPG worlds and instant harems. Case in point, 2014 was the year that saw two very similar shows explode in popularity: Akame ga Kill, and Black Bullet. I’ve already covered Akame ga Kill in a previous binge-watch, and let me tell you, it’s kind of eerie how similar these two shows feel. They’re both edgy, schlocky, goofy action thrill rides with wacky premises that lean into their inherent absurdity, mining sincere excitement and enthusiasm from some of the stupidest building blocks imaginable. Yeah, they’re dumb, but they know they’re dumb, so why not have some genuine fun along the way?
And honestly? I’m down for it. Yes, Black Bullet is an astronomically dumb show when you look at it from a birds-eye view. Badass teenagers in a post-apocalyptic world fighting giant mutant insects with the aid of superpowered little girls who are also a Racism Metaphor(tm)? That is some grade-A preposterous trash, and I am having so much fun with it. Maybe I just have bad taste, but in today’s world where the average slice of genre pablum looks like, I dunno, fucking Overlord, all stiff edges and droning monotony, I really wish we still got shows like this, shows this sincerely committed to their own brand of nonsense, shows that remembered that this kind of silliness could be joyful, and creative, and goofy on purpose, and cool. An evil virus that turns humans into giant carnivorous bugs? That’s cool. Grandstanding masked villains who revel in chewing the scenery as they casually slaughter countless nameless background characters with graceful glee and pop in out of nowhere just for shits and giggles? That’s cool. Telekinetic super-lolis who kick giant spiders into messy, sloppy pieces, courtesy of Kinema Citrus putting its best foot forward with the action as always? That’s cool. Badass, edgy teens who shoot superguns with superbullets but still have time to freak out over possibly missing a bean sprout sale? Fuck you, that’s cool as shit. Call me an easy lay, but I have a soft spot in my heart for shows that know that sometimes, just being good enough is, well, good enough. When you’re willing to let the absurd and foolish just be absurd and foolish, chances are you’ll end up with something worth keeping around.
Heart on its Sleeve
Of course, as I’ve said plenty of times before, all the good intentions in the world are nothing without some actual talent backing them up. Black Bullet could very easily have turned out completely unwatchable, and it’s still possible it’ll end up collapsing into nonsense by the end. The exposition is all laughably obvious and forced (a common feature of most shows of this nature), the worldbuilding is suspect at best, there’s a thunderingly obvious surprise bad guy in the waiting (I can’t believe Fudou Kazanari’s design from Symphogear is just a universal shorthand for Bad Grandad), and the fetish pandering with the cute little sister who wants to marry you is... well, I’ll get back to that in a second. Point is, there’s a lot about Black Bullet that could’ve gone wrong and sent the whole affair spiraling out of control. So the fact it’s holding together as well as it is means there’s something of value worth latching onto here. And the simplest explanation is that for all its goofery, this show actually knows how to be fun. The action is all very exciting and kinetic, with great impacts and a bevy of killer cuts. Kinema Citrus is very good at this sort of thing, but beyond that, I think their greatest strength is imbuing their works with a sense of grandeur. The shot compositions and environmental design give this world a massive, majestic feel, like it expands far beyond the horizons of what we’re currently seeing. And the characters, simplistic as they are, all have very good chemistry together. Frankly, I can’t believing I’m having this much fun with the bisexual necrophiliac doctor.
But what really sells me on Black Bullet is that underneath all the goofery and nonsense, there’s some genuine emotional weight to be found. The concept of virus repellent super-kids being used as a living barrier against the virus is pretty striking, and while the racism metaphors aren’t exactly nuanced, that moment where the cops try to casually brutalize that kid in the back alley is every bit as ugly as this stuff needs to be. The cursed kid society having a functional hideout in the sewers, the casual way other hunters refer to their partners as “equipment”, Rentaro’s brief conversation with Shogen’s partner as it becomes clear how little she’s used to receiving genuine kindness (”Are you worried about me?” “Is that wrong?”)... there’s an undercurrent of darkness that really sticks out here. This world is hard for people like Enju, and the rawness of her pain when she confronts that prejudice, struggling to imagine herself as more than just a tool for destruction, lands harder than it has any goddamn right to. See, what ultimately redeems the potentially really gross undercurrents of her character is that she’s not just a mindless waifu fantasy; she has an inner life of her own, and she’s compelling on her own terms. And you’re able to feel how important she and Rentaro are to each other from how well they play off each other.
Actually, that’s probably my favorite bit of this show so far: I really enjoy the time these two spend together. They’ve got such great camaraderie, and it never feels like they’re on uneven footing, which makes Enju’s flirtations much easier to stomach (and even genuinely hilarious at times: ”What, should I have used more tongue?” ”Will you stop trying to tempt me down the road to hell?”). They bicker and butt heats like two people who genuinely care for each other, confident enough in their trust that they’re able to levy such petty barbs against each other yet still come back to each other for companionship at the end of the day. It’s... well, it’s charming! It’s charming and fun, and it’s heartfelt in the way only truly sincere writing can be! You get a real sense that these two have both seen a lot of darkness in their pasts; Rentaro’s flashback monologue that they both had to “slowly learn how to be human” after the apocalypse was surprisingly poignant. These two are flawed, hurt people, but they help each other smile that much more easily, and the genuine affection they have toward each other is kinda hard not to get invested in. That moment where Rentaro freaks out at the sewer captain for Enju’s sake and we find out she’s been listening in, getting a firsthand seat to how deeply he cares for her? Woof, man, my heart wasn’t ready for that. And the fact they’re able to bounce back from such trying times with little more than a fistbump and a shared smile really sells how important their relationship is to each other. That’s the product of actual good writing, not just random shit-flinging, and it’s proof that Black Bullet has its heart firmly on its sleeve, exactly where it needs to be.
Fall and Rise Again
And yet, what especially impresses me about the show’s writing thus far is, above all else, Rentaro himself. The protagonist of shows like this can so often slip into being boring, a brooding badass in the Kirito mold who effortlessly solves everything himself. But Rentaro’s far more interesting than that, because unlike so many isekai heroes of the past few heroes, he doesn’t automatically know what the right thing to do is. He gets confronted with emotional conflicts that he genuinely doesn’t know how to solve, in Enju’s angst, in his own lingering abandonment issues, products of pain that hasn’t fully healed. He gets scared and uncertain, he lashes out and overheats, he makes mistakes that hurt him and the people he cares about, and he doesn’t always know what the best thing to do is. And he’s self-aware about it! He knows his anger from losing his parents is still weighing too heavily on him. He knows he can’t solve racism all by himself. He knows he doesn’t always say the right things.  But what makes him such a compelling protagonist is despite that uncertainty, he still tries. He throws himself into conflicts, knowing he’s out of his depth, but still struggles to find an answer because he cares that much about the people close to him. Because at the end of the day, even if he doesn’t know what he’s doing, even if he knows he doesn’t know what he’s doing, the things he’s fighting for demand he try regardless, and he refuses to back down from that responsibility.
Maybe this is a result of how many damn isekai we’ve been drowning in recently, but I can’t help but really appreciate this. A hero who isn’t perfect at solving everything? Who gets overwhelmed, physically and emotionally, and gets to recognize those failings? Who still tries his best regardless, holding the people he cares for close and promising them he’ll try and help them however he can? Who’s willing to fix his mistakes, saving a girl he let the police carry off to kill and apologize to his friends when his recklessness worries them? Who blows up at people for perspectives that truly horrify him, but is still able to swallow his pride and apologize for his outbursts, voice shaking with shame because he knows he fucked up? Y’all, I have missed heroes like this. I have missed heroes who were allowed to mess up and fight to make it better. I have missed heroes who could be unsure and uncertain, but try their best regardless. I have missed heroes that could feel this genuine, this heartfelt, this... human. And if this is the kind of story that Black Bullet is setting out to tell, then despite all the ridiculous plot shenanigans, I think we’re in genuinely good hands. I could use a hell of a lot more anime that let themselves be this simultaneously stupid and sincere. Thank you for a good first impression, show. Now let’s see if you can keep it up.
Odds and Ends
-”If you don’t want to die, then live, Rentaro!” *side-eyes in Fate*
-”But more importantly, why didn’t you tell me about this sale too?!” ksjdfhskjdf
-Oh shit, she’s gotta get dialysis? Well, this whole conversation got a lot more interesting.
-Who fixes a bayonet on a pistol I swear to god
-That Maximum Pain attack feels so much like something I would write, and now I’m jealous.
-”You just wouldn’t give up on living. I’m impressed.” Man, I like her a lot.
-”Sorry for worrying you, Enju.” GOD, his VA is good.
-”Give me 100 times the effort you’ve given thus far! Because I’ll be giving you 1000 times the effort back.” Cripes, I really like her.
-Enju carrying Rentaro on her back? Yes, please.
-”Shogen’s made of muscles, including his brains.” kjdfhsdfksdf
And with that, we’re on our way! This might end up being a more pleasant surprise than I expected, so here’s hoping it can keep it up. See you next time!

top five anime battles go
I’m sorry I zone out a little during like any extensive fight sequence so I’m just gonna list anime with cool fight animation
1. One Punch Man. Absolutely insane framerate, some of the best fighting sequences I’ve ever seen, and it’s basically genre satire. I love it
2. Full Metal Alchemist. Both series have really good fight scenes, Brotherhood has more updated animation tho
3. Mob Psycho 100. The aesthetic gets me.
4. Dragon Ball (+Z). Horrible 80′s/90′s anime animation but also the first fighting anime I ever watched, before I knew what anime was. Almost unwatchable but I love it
5. Soul Eater. Something about this show’s fight scenes make me feel icky and I think that’s neat.

Visual Texture vs. Good Animation
The other day i was having a conversation with a friend who suggested that most people have around 3 main things that they look for in anime to truly satisfy them as a viewer, and that these three things differ from person to person. She then suggested that one of my things would be “animation,” probably since it’s something I talk about a lot. My response was something along the lines of “nah, bro. Cause I like Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and that show looks like total garbage and has little to no animation.” But then like 4 hours later I realized she would be 100% correct if we replace the word “animation” with “visuals” which covers things like directing, style, designs, backgrounds, expressions, and (obviously) animation.
A few months ago I wrote this 3000 word post about the subject of visuals in anime (you can skip to the sections labeled “Part 3: Make a collage with those cut corners” and “Part 5: Does anyone here know CPR?! Because we need to breathe some life into this movie!” because that’s where I talk a lot about Higurashi). When it comes to Higurashi, the gist is that the show is really well directed, which makes it watchable despite the very obvious lack of quality in other aspects of it’s visuals.
The other series I love with really, really awful animation would be Baby Steps, which, unlike Higurashi, has directing which I would merely describe as “standard” and “passible.” But Baby Steps still has very emotive characters and doesn’t overshoot in terms of what the animators were capable of. It’s totally watchable and the story is fucking great so it’s still on my favourites list.
Two recent projects that got 100% butchered purely because of their visual presentation are Berserk (2016) and Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic. Admittedly, I’ve never read the Berserk manga, but I’ve seen the first few episodes of the 1997 version and am well aware that the manga is considered an absolute masterpiece by pretty much everyone who’s read it. I also know that the 2016 show is considered total dog shit by everyone who tried watching it, and I can even tell that much from watching the trailers and clips on youtube.
I think this very much debunks this kind of unspoken cultural consensus that visuals don’t matter when considering all factors involved in anime (including story, characters, etc.). While there is a lot of truth to this (see the above example of Baby Steps), if the visuals of your show are sooooo bad that they distract from all other aspects of the show and/or make it an actively unpleasant viewing experience, then yeah. Visuals are kind of important.
I think that’s the reason I had the knee-jerk reaction of “asigdhkrshakh NO!” when my friend suggested that visuals were important to me, because in my head i’m thinking “ha, I’m not so shallow as to not watch a show based purely on how it looks,” but no. I was wrong. I very much care about the visuals in a visual medium. A medium that was meant to be visual.
It’s maybe not the most important thing, but it is, in fact, important.
This brings me to Book of the Atlantic. I already put a link above to my giant post about why that movie is unwatchable to me, but the gist is that people kept saying “hmmm some of the animation isn’t very good” in their reviews, and after actually watching that movie I was just like-
No.
That’s not the problem.
The problem is that the way this movie was adapted from it’s source material is fundamentally broken, misguided, and awful. So is the directing. And yeah, the bad animation doesn’t help.
Black Butler is one of my favourite stories, and this movie is based on one of my favourite arcs from said story. Even so, I can’t give this movie anything above a 5/10 because watching it makes me feel terrible (in fact, I’m tempted to go lower, but the story and characters barely stop me from doing so. I wouldn’t be surprised if other people gave it a 1 or a 2).
On the opposite end of the spectrum is Kizumonogatari; a series of movies that I can’t give below a 5/10 despite it having some of the most vapid and terrible writing ever. The amount of polish injected into every single aspect of Kizumonogatari’s visual presentation is ludicrous and it’s probably the best looking anime I’ve ever seen on a technical level. (Although I kind of recommend “watching” it by way of looking up gifs on tumblr. It’ll save you some time.)
Another big thing is the concept of style, but I already talked a lot about that in the other post I linked. To sum up, embracing a unique visual aesthetic can both make the work memorable and make cut corners in animation less of a problem. See Kill la Kill, Bakemonogatari, and Devilman Crybaby for good examples of this.
To be clear, the point of this post isn’t “I won’t watch a show if that show doesn’t look good.” The point is that there has to be some level of visual competence, no matter how small, otherwise it really taints what might otherwise be a good project.
If you want even more content on the importance of visuals in anime, I highly recommend Super Eyepatch Wolf’s videos on Berserk and The Junji Ito Project because he goes into more detail about visual storytelling and how to (not) adapt anime from manga.

fiction meme!
tagged by @onceuponamirror and @raptorlily thank you both! 💕
Fictional characters you relate to?
This, uhh, really depends on the change of season / time of day / day of the week. I am All Over The Place. Plus I tend to relate to various characters despite differences bc like. That’s a huge reason why I like fiction; empathising and relating to people I wouldn’t normally or am not like.
Anyway, getting off my soap-box, I seem to have had a long lasting affinity with; Beverly Marsh, Lilly Kane, Mandy Milkovich, and Pascalle West from Outrageous Fortune (keep in mind a lot of this is less to do with personality and more to do with life experiences).
Book you can read over and over without getting tired of it?
Are prisons obsolete, IT, hp & half blood prince and also prisoner of Azkaban, all about love.
What’s your favorite comfort show/movie?
There are too many I can never just choose one omg. The early Harry Potter movies. San Junipero. Easy rider. Stand by me. Hunt for the wilderpeople. The Goonies. and also I love watching never mind the buzzcocks and the big fat quiz of the year. Parks and rec, and uhh weirdly sons of anarchy. Motorbikes relax me and idk the vibe in the show is so familiar to me its not jarring at all. Idk if I can explain that but /shrug emoji
Which fictional character are you most defensive over?
Nancy Wheeler!!! Lucas Sinclair !!!! Max Mayfield! GINNY and Ron Weasley!!! Tara Knowles!!!
Show you fell out of love with?
So many.... so many. I could go back as far as when they killed Marissa on The OC. Or season 3 of Veronica Mars. But now I love them again and just exclude those parts. I would say Riverdale but that’s a love/hate thing. I never really LOVED it but orange is the new black was a show I was really hopeful for but, of course, no tv show can ever be truly critical of the dominant regime. In high school I watched criminal minds religiously but as my education and personal experiences/comprehension of those experiences has progressed I’ve found cop shows to be entirely unwatchable.
Show you’re most excited for?
It WAS Grace and Frankie but I gotta say season 4 was a little off for me. Still enjoyed it for the most part though. Def The Good Place is my absolute favourite show on right now. I’m also really intrigued about Black Lightning despite my general aversion to superhero stuff, and of course I’m excited for season 3 of Stranger Things. Also I quit watching Peaky Blinders after season 2 as like a delayed gratification thing, I’m so excited to one day catch up on the more recent seasons. Same goes for Westworld. And because I’m utter trash I am always excited for any ep of Geordie shore or Bad girls club 👌
What’s your aesthetic? Both Sarah and Raptor answered this differently so I’m gonna answer for both writing and personal style!
In terms of writing it’s def character internal monologues dealing with their Feelings, esp awkward crush antics, mental health issues particularly grief, anxiety and low self esteem. conflict resolution is a thing I Love to tackle but in like, the end stage. The aftermath of a fight where people repair damage is .... everything to me. and crafting out small, simple, soft moments within lives of chaos/crisis.
In terms of personal style... It’s always dependent on what I’m doing. Like lately everything about me has been screaming “hiking lesbian” bc that is what I am lol. But in general it’s lots of black, leopard print, fishnets, leather and denim. Chunky platform boots and Too Much Makeup. When I was/am teaching it’s just like black leggings and long draped black shirts or cardigans and my standard half moon crescent necklace with as toned down makeup as i can manage (so like, a full face but with black and brown shadows) (in saying that I could never give up my statement lipsticks to the point where someone in tutor evals forgot my name and said “the tutor with the cool blue lipstick is good” lmao. Proudest moment of my life? Yes.)
Favorite fanfic tropes?
I Thought This Person Was The Worst But Then We Fell In Love? Is that a trope? Like not necessarily enemies to lovers but that thing where someone is irritating and completely different from you in every possible way but then your heart does the Thing when they’re around. V different ppl falling in love and finding commonality is my SHIT. But then again I love diff tropes for diff pairings!
My absolute fav thing explored in fic is differing character motivations and how that can create conflict, but how through mutual respect and internal work and self awareness two people can resolve it and choose to be together because they make each other better . This is a huge issue for me because actually it tends to be soulmate au’s that do this the most explicitly but I don’t.... Believe in or enjoy the idea of soulmates . But I love that some people THINK they have a soulmate bc of how much another person helps them be better. Like there are some fics that tackle it and my whole heart is like well, Damn. Soulmate fics where the people who end up together are not the “intended” soulmates? That is it, that’s my fav thing, thanks for listening,,,
Anyway yeah plus of course... there’s only one bed and we have to share it and oh no we woke up cuddling? Who doesn’t love a good classic.
Tagging @heartunsettledsoul @montpahrnah @ninnieamee @sporklift and @tossertozier and anyone who wants to. Sorry if you’ve been tagged already or don’t wanna participate just ignore lol— also if we’re mutuals and you write can you lmk if you wanna be tagged in writing memes bc I don’t necessarily know who writes!! Or who wants to participate in memes! And I wanna know!!! ❤️

10 Question Tag
I didn't expect to be tagged back so I'm a little surprised. Thanks for tagging me @aconfusedidentity 💜
1.What are your thoughts on horror movies?
I haven't watched any horror movies for ages. I used to watch them in middle school. I like some of them but I think most of them are cliche or cringy.
2.Are you learning any languages? If so, which ones?
I'm learning English and I've started in Korean recently. I have a love-hate relationship with the French and I also started learning Norwegian in March. It was going so well but after a month, I kinda left it because I'm born as opposed to the concept of consistency. But I'll definitely go back to French and Norwegian in a few months.
3.How many books are you currently reading?
*homer simpson backs into the bushes.gif* This year I find it very hard to focus, especially on reading. So currently, I'm not reading any books.
4.How many notebooks do you currently use, and how many are left unused?
I use four notebooks right now. I don't have any unused ones. Unlike most people, I only buy notebooks when I need them.
5.Do you enjoy being out in the rain?
YES. When I'm in the rain, I feel like all the negativity goes away with the water. I feel very calm, sometimes I even feel extremely happy that I wanna dance and jump around.
But, I don't because...
yeah you guessed it right! ANXIETY
6.Do you enjoy cemeteries or do they creep you out?
They don't creep me out but I don't like being in the cemeteries. I don't believe like I'm really visiting that person or they see me and such.
7.If you could live anywhere you desire, what kind of environment would you want? (Ex: by a beach, by cliffs, in the city, in a forest, in a small town, etc. Feel free to go into detail, should you wish to do so.)
I love big cities with rich culture. Because you can appreciate art and history more. Also, living in the city brings you accessibility. You can find things that you want easily. Besides I love greenery and I love to be close to the sea too.
8.How many unwatched movies do you own, if any? 416. I lowkey have a phobia of watching movies. I still haven't seen some of the top IMDb-250 kinda movies. I can't decide what to watch and I don't wanna waste my time. Yet, I open some sitcom and binge-watch them for 3 hours. Clown™
9.Regardless of whether you are currently collecting anything: If you were given the opportunity to dedicate an entire room to display a collection, what would be said room be filled with?
Probably flowers. Dried or not, doesn't matter. I love them.
10.If you were a cryptid, would you have horns or antlers?
I think antlers would be aesthetically more pleasing.
