Ok so...

Today wasn't a good day in general, but especially not for writing, but... here we go anyway.

Setup: Rei in movie 25, sitting in his glass cube, and watching his dead friend enter the meeting room over video.

He had known.

Of course he had known, after all, Kazami had told him as soon as he had learnt of their plan.

But nothing could've prepared Rei for the feeling that shook his whole being at seeing his friend's lookalike entering the meeting room.

Everything fit, from the loose tie and wild curly hair to the bad posture and attitude in his words. Even his voice sounded familiar through the speakers, and it made Rei's heart clench painfully.

It was like his friend had returned from the dead, came back to fight crime once more next to Detective Satou.

He tried to listen closely to the words spoken, but his eyes and mind kept wandering back to the man whose only obvious difference to Matsuda was the tan skin similar to his own. Only when that one name fell - Morofushi - an even bigger sadness flooded his heart. Big enough that his mind played tricks on him, blending the image of Matsuda with the disguised detective, and giving him a frown.

It was just in his head, obviously. Detective Takagi didn't know Hiro and the name was unique enough that it couldn't possibly ring any bells in him.

Rei rubbed his eyes and fought down the bitter taste on his tongue. No, Hiro's death had nothing to do with this situation.

Knowing that didn't help against the pain building up in his chest, though. Seeing that photo again, talking to Conan about the events on that 6th of November years ago, and now seeing Matsuda come back to live in his double ganger, all of that had ripped open those barely healed wounds he had patched up and hidden from the world for so long.

Just for this moment, Rei was glad that he was imprisoned here, far away from everyone who could see the tears running down his cheeks uncontrollably...
