Random Trivia #5
Neta, one of the two suns on this planet, never rises or sets. (It's probably never going to be brought up in-story, but this area is right around the north pole of the planet, hence the sun weirdness.) Instead of going up and down, Neta travels slowly around the horizon, taking an entire year to make the circuit.
This means it's really beating on one side or another of the Merfaen tiz Ornaru at any given time. The Merfaen are a ring of hollow cliffs, and as you can probably imagine, being blasted by a never-setting sun makes it PRETTY HOT in that area. So hot, in fact, that only very strong vegetable life can survive the heat. Therefore....
Every city in the Merfaen has a once-a-year event known as the Great Migration (but it's a different time of year for each city, depending on where in the circle they are). Everyone packs themselves up - along with any pets/livestock, and belongings that aren't heat resistant - and they go for a march around the entire cliff ring. This takes about a month, give or take a few days. By the time they get back to their city, Neta has moved along far enough that the heat is bearable again.

Heritage, signage, and language united.
In 500, Mark Bradford uses caulk to repeat the text of a 1913 advertisement on a grid of painted and oxidized paper on wood panels. The notice seeks five hundred families to inhabit the all-Black settlement of Blackdom, New Mexico, a site that had approximately 150 residents during the early twentieth century until the Great Depression, at which point it was largely uninhabited.
This wanted ad appeared in The Crisis, a quarterly magazine for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), to draw people looking for new opportunities across the country. Knowing only a few details about the migration of his motherโ€™s family to Los Angeles, Bradford found great resonance with the story of Blackdom: a story of those searching for new possibilities and building community with and for other Black people.
See this work by #MarkBradford in #GreatMigrationBkM through June 25.

I saw this lovely victrola at a museum near me and wanted to get a picture of Claudie with it since phonographs are emblematic of the music in the timeline of her 1920s story.
Tumblr media
I'm in Texas, and when this real object was new, this was a very hard place to live for African-American people. I've been affected by reading Isabel Wilkerson's The Warmth of Other Suns, so I've talked about it a lot here, and now I'm going to talk about it some more. She says,
"It was ....around the turn of the twentieth century, that southern state legislatures began devising with inventiveness and precision laws that would regulate every aspect of black people's lives, solidify the southern caste system, and prohibit even the most casual and incidental contact between the races. They would come to be called Jim Crow laws...."
Tumblr media
As Wilkerson talks about in her book, the laws, the segregation, black people trapped in debt as sharecroppers and barred from professions, the violence and threat of violence and unwillingness of police to prosecute vigilantes, and the widespread indoctrination of white people in white supremacy are why six million black people left the South and moved North or West during the Great Migration. That would have been extremely hard for people who didn't have a lot of money and for people whose whole extended families and friends were here. I do not remember learning anything more than a glancing remark about this history as a child.
Claudie's storyย is as much or more an introduction for kids to the Great Migration as it is about the Harlem Renaissance. Yay for this story getting told. I'm going to pretend like Claudie is listening to this phonograph up in New York City, where things were hard (as her story addresses a bit within the short page limit) but would have been better than where I am.

I have officially abandoned ship.
I have officially given up on Twitter. I'm moving my ass over here for now. Or at least until hell finally blows over. which it probably wont I'm not so sure if it may and there's a lot of uncertainty in making this place my new home. I'm a real Twitter addict so chances are I may just say I'm moving over here, use it for a week, forget about it, then go back to twitter. But I truly hope that I can make this place my new home.
anyways fuck elon musk I can't believe he didn't pay the bill for his BILLION DOLLAR COMPANY. It's like refusing to pay rent on your apartment and then getting confused when your landlord kicks you out

y'all I have a question. do you prefer if artists have an art-only side acct alongside their main? I have everything centred in this one profile because that's just easier for me, but if I gotta build a side blog for art retweets I can do that. Just gotta know what the audience wants!
aka please tell me your thoughts one way or another :)

The Great Migration
In 1962 my father aged 11 and his brother aged 13 made their Great Migration alone from Thibodaux, Lousiana to NYC to join their father who had moved there earlier. It's an amazing story that I'm digging more into. I wanted to do some research for the project, share the story and research with my daugher, and create some imagery. For my project I'm looking at the connection from The Great Migration, to Redlining, to Climate Justice today.
Interesting results from the research so I decided to share them. I used ChatGPT, Bard, and Perplexity. Let me know what you think of the results.
