By 16 and 18 they’re not even trying to be subtle anymore. They’ll be chattering nonstop right until the moment the front tires hit the driveway, when they suddenly collapse mid sentence and start fake snoring.
Darry is lugging them up the front steps like “…I can see you peeking.”
“No you can’t, I’m asleep.”
“You’re talking to me.”
“Sleeptalking.”
pony and soda got away with the pretend-to-be-asleep-so-you-get-carried-inside maneuver for much longer than they should have bc darry loved carrying his little brothers :)
their parents weren’t crazy about it but it was sweet so they let it happen

How I think the Curtis brothers feel about and put ketchup on fries. Darrel puts it in a little pile on the side. Sodapop puts it all over the top of the fries. Ponyboy thinks ketchup is the nastiest thing ever created. Send tweet.

Darrel Curtis, looking every inch his father except for his eyes, reaching his breaking point and slapping his little brother; who he doesn’t know is already believing Darry hates him. Ponyboy, who has never once been hit by any family member, who’s father did not yell at him at all, thinking for a split second that his father had hit him before coming to the realisation it was his big brother the whole time, confirming his suspicions that Darry hates him all along and running from the problem
Darry who wishes he could change what happened, who didn’t mean to lose control like that, who has so much grief he doesn’t know what to do with it, and Sodapop who is trying to hold it together so his older brother doesn’t spiral more

Darry can tell who walked into the house depending on the sound of the door. Every member of the gang has an entrance that can be very easily missed.
Dally slams the door open and doesn't bother to close it behind him.
Steve opens the door and then slams it behind him, then goes to bother whoever is closest.
Johnny is almost always following someone so if the door stays open a bit longer and is quietly shut then Johnny has followed them in.
Two-Bit is similar to Steve except he dusts off his shoes. His mama always gets onto him tracking dirt so it's a habit.
Ponyboy quietly opens the door and shuts it behind him and usually calls out a I'm home. Or he's completely quiet except for the fact he stomps without realizing it.
Sodapop is almost always excited when he gets home so he accidentally slams the door into the wall and apologizes. He also usually announces he's home.
Darry just wishes they would stop slamming the door, it hurts the door and he's not exactly itching to fix the hinges.

During the Christmas season, a small sprig of mistletoe appears over the Curtis brother’s kitchen door, but with a slight rule change: instead of being kissed, anyone caught under the mistletoe gets punched. Overnight, mass war is declared.
Johnny’s living in the kitchen because he’s too scared to try and get out.
Two-Bit gets decked the most, because he keeps forgetting and brazenly walks through the door multiple times a day.
Ponyboy is climbing through windows just to avoid the door.
Soda and Steve are either bolting through doors faster than they can be caught, or trying to sabotage people by pushing them under the mistletoe.
Dally is is relatively safe, because no one wants to try taking a piece out of him; in return, he hides behind the door and wallops whoever tries to sneak through, laughing maniacally the whole time.
Meanwhile Darry is pinching the bridge of his nose, 100% done, like “guys please stop, this is stupid”
Then turns around and absolutely DECKS Steve as he tries to sprint into the kitchen.

the outsiders headcanons from someone who lives in oklahoma
-oklahoma’s weather is actually fuckin INSANE. like i genuinely think it’s a glitch in the matrix or somethin.
-but anyways i like to think that the curtis brothers are the only ones who have a storm shelter at their house, so whenever there’s a tornado or somethin, the gang all just BOLTS over to their house
-i also headcanon that dally is real scared of the bad weather (although he’ll never admit it)
-the rest of the gang is used to it because they’re from tulsa but dally’s new yorker ass is HORRIFIED
-i’ve already made a post about this one, but i think darry’s southern accent would get thicker the stronger his emotions are (im totally not projecting here or anything 😊) but yeah darry will get mad and then it’s just *angry oklahoman sounds*
-there’s a back door at the circle cinema (the movie theater ponyboy is leaving at the beginning of the movie) and i just know damn well that dally sneaks johnny and ponyboy into movies all the time
-oklahoma is part of the bible belt, so there’s a good chance at least one of the guys in the gang has religious trauma (most likely johnny)
that’s all i have for now sorry it’s so short!

without darry, the curtis family would be dysfunctional and stressed and unable to stay together
without soda, the curtis family would be an emotional wreck of arguments and secrets and miscommunication
without pony, the curtis family would be bitter and depressed, constantly down without hope
just thinking about how they really can’t be anything without all of them

Ponyboy would’ve killed himself had it not been for Darry, soda, and two-bit.
No I’m serious. Looking back on the book you can clearly see just how bad mentally he was doing after the death of Johnny.
He was completely delusional and kept trying to convince himself that Johnny wasn’t dead. Going so far as to tell other people, Randy, that Johnny wasn’t dead and he was actually the one who killed Bob.
Ponyboys mental health took a nose dive after Johnnys death and i genuinely believe he would have killed himself had his family and friends not been there. In the movie Two-bit and Ponyboy hang out all day while his brothers are at work. Making it impossible for him to kill/hurt himself. When two-bit isn’t around, it’s Darry and soda keeping an eye on him.
Ponyboy famously said “why couldn’t dally take it, but I could”
You couldn’t take it Ponyboy. You couldn’t, but you had no way of being able to actually do anything about it. The Curtis gang accidentally saved his life.
Ponyboy Curtis would’ve ended up dead and I stand by that.

i find it so interesting that the curtis family dining table doesn’t have all three chairs until the very end of the musical.
when darry sings runs in the family, there is only one chair. this highlights not only his isolation from the rest of the greasers, but the disconnection between him and ponyboy as well.
no one sits in the chair.
for runs in the family reprise, there are now two chairs at the dining table. pony sits in one chair, while darry and sodapop both take turns sitting in the other. Both brothers have pony’s best interests at heart, but they show it in very different ways. soda provides the emotional support, but darry’s contributions to pony’s well-being often goes unnoticed by pony. while they are a family, they are not united. there is still a distinct separation between darry and pony, with soda being directly in the middle of them.
during throwing in the towel, which i am going to assume still takes place in the curtis household, there is no dining table.
there are no chairs
and there is no ponyboy.
darry begins the song kneeling down on the floor, as if begging for forgiveness. soda crouches down to his level, and tries to lift him up, both physically and in the song as well. darry sits defeated on stool (or bricks that i am pretending is a stool or something, because it is definitely not a chair)
soda spends the rest of the song comforting and consoling him while pony harmonizes from a completely separate location (the church)
the third chair finally appears during the scene with soda’s breakdown. at the beginning of the scenes darry is sitting on the chair and soda is standing when ponyboy enters. pony then sits alone on the floor while darry comes over and crouches down to his level.
he takes a page out of soda’s book, trying to reach out and comfort pony the same way that soda was able to comfort him, but it turns into a confrontation that soda, once again, is in the middle of.
after stay gold, pony finally approaches the table and sits with his brothers. it is the first time in the musical that all three brothers are sitting together. darry reaches out in response, asking to read what pony has written in his notebook so far.
the three chairs are finally united, and so are the curtis brothers.
