Alrighty, I'm in the process of renewing my Australian passport, so I've got opinions on this.
1. Passports should exist:
Passports are not only a super powerful piece of ID, but they're probably one of the least invasive ways to track movement. There are things the border folks need to know before letting you in the country; where have you been? Are you a citizen? Are you allowed in? (Yes, this is important because it includes protecting biosecurity and "hey, we don't want domestic abusers in Australia"). Coming out of covid, we should all know why tracking migration is important. Passports give the folks at the gate one document to check, with only the relevant info, rather than accessing your entire background.
2. Passports kinda need to expire:
Having to renew them every ten years makes sure that your information and photo are up to date. For them to function as the level of ID that they are, all of that shit needs to be accurate. Plus, some places won't let you in if you have a stamp from certain countries, so getting a fresh book means getting a clear slate
3. Renewal should be cheap and easy:
I'm renewing my passport pretty much entirely online. I got my photos from the post office, including a digital copy, and now I just gotta fill out the form. This is how easy the renewal should be; it pulls up my existing info, and I make any changes and upload the new photo. 5-10 minutes max.
The real problem is the price. It's going to cost me $300+ to renew my passport. That's fucking stupid. Getting a new passport is one thing; there's a lot of admin that goes into creating them. But a renewal? That shit should just be the cost of the actual book + like a $30 processing fee.
Freedom to roam is a human right, and there shouldn't be such a cost barrier.
passports…should not expire
#passports#structured rant#the Australian passport is the most secure passport in the world#i could understand them charging $100 for just the book; it has more technology in it than your average appliance#but a renewal should always be cheaper than the original document#seriously; if you ever get a chance to look at an Australian passport bring out a magnifying glass. it has so much hidden cool shit 😎

Australia plans to ban social media for under 16-year-olds -- a terrible idea.
A few hours ago today, the world's first ever age-reliant social media ban took place in Australia. In around a year or so, social media companies have to figure out a way to ban all under-16s from getting on their platforms.
How? Dunno. Thats up to the social media big wigs to figure out. Yes, the very same ones who design their platforms in such a way that it purposefully holds your attention span hostage and blast an advertisement every 2 videos. Surely, they have the children in mind and can find a solution that doesn't involves passports or data-sharing but is still super secure. Surely.
There are countless more issues with this law other than the fact that its simply vague. For example, apparently YouTube is not a part of the ban because of its educational merit for kids. Sure, it has educational videos but also has all the inappropriate content that these parliament members are afraid of. And most of this 'educational' content that is geared for children ages 0-6 is Cocomelon-esque content that is designed to, as I said, hold your baby's attention span hostage and is proven to be poor for child development. Keeping YouTube intact doesn't seem as though all parts of a child's mental stability and basic executive function are on Australian legislator's minds.
Take a look at this quote from Australian legislator Andrew Wilkie on why he changed his mind about supporting this ban:
"We have heard a lot from the parents’ perspective, but the voices of children and young people have been conspicuously missing from most of the debate and commentary. That’s despite the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child asserting in article 12 that children should be “provided the opportunity to be heard in any judicial and administrative proceedings affecting the child”"
Essentially: the law about banning children from social media to protect them did not discuss the implications with the children.
Do these legislators truly understand the absolute perseverance of an average teenager attempting to access the content they want online? If the kid wants Twitter, oh they are going to get Twitter! They will find a way. Everyone always does. All these governments that ban certain websites forget that VPNs exist, and that people will exchange information with each other no matter what, despite censorship.
When I first heard of this, it reminded me of the Prohibition era (when alcohol was banned in the USA). One of the main reasons the Prohibition did not work was because alcohol was banned, the government could not legally regulate it (because if alcohol is banned, well, there isn't supposed to be any of it). It created an entire new sect of the black market just dealing alcohol and creating crime.
The original reason why the US government at the time thought to ban alcohol was so domestic violence rates could decrease and protect women and children. That didn't happen.
Sounds familiar, no? If Australia goes through and bans social media for children, they would not be able to regulate it. Making it even more unsafe. Their whole reasoning was that social media has some direct link to children killing themselves.
I wonder if we'll actually see a decrease in mental health issues in Australian teenagers.
If we don't, I told you so.

Studying abroad is a dream for many, offering the chance to experience a new culture, gain world-class education, and open doors to international career opportunities. However, one common concern that holds students back is the complex and often intimidating visa and application process. The good news? Many countries and universities have streamlined their procedures, making it easier than ever to apply, get approved, and embark on this exciting journey. Here’s a guide to navigating the study abroad process, from choosing your destination to securing your visa with ease.
Study in Malaysia
Step 1: Choose Your Study Destination and Program
The first step is to decide where you want to study and which program fits your goals. Different countries offer unique experiences and benefits:
United States: Known for its diverse programs and prestigious universities.
United Kingdom: A popular destination for students looking to experience rich culture and top-tier institutions.
Australia and New Zealand: Favorable visa policies and globally recognized programs.
Canada: Known for its welcoming attitude toward international students and post-study work opportunities.
Germany and France: Home to high-quality education and various programs in English.
Research the courses that interest you and check the requirements. Many universities now have clear and user-friendly websites with dedicated sections for international applicants, so you can get the information you need quickly.
Step 2: Understand the Visa Process in Your Chosen Country
Each country has its own visa requirements, and knowing the specifics can help you feel more prepared:
United States (F-1 Student Visa): The U.S. requires you to get accepted to a SEVP-certified school before applying for a visa. You’ll need to complete the DS-160 form, pay the SEVIS fee, and schedule an interview at your local embassy or consulate.
United Kingdom (Tier 4 Student Visa): After getting accepted by a UK university, you'll receive a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) that’s essential for your visa application. The UK also offers a Graduate Route, allowing you to stay and work after finishing your studies.
Canada (Study Permit): Once you receive an acceptance letter from a Canadian institution, you can apply for a study permit. Canada also offers a streamlined process called Student Direct Stream for students from select countries.
Australia (Student Visa Subclass 500): You’ll need a Confirmation of Enrollment (CoE) from an Australian university. Australia’s visa process includes an online application, so it's straightforward and easy to track.
European Countries (Schengen Student Visa): For study in Europe, you'll often need a Schengen Visa, which allows travel within most EU countries.
Make sure to keep track of deadlines and requirements, as these vary from country to country.
Step 3: Simplify the Application Process
Today, many universities offer an online application system that saves you time and hassle. These are some of the best practices to make sure your application goes smoothly:
Create a Checklist: Make a list of all required documents, which often include your transcripts, a copy of your passport, standardized test scores (like the SAT, GRE, or IELTS), recommendation letters, and a personal statement.
Write a Strong Personal Statement: Use this space to explain why you chose the program and what your goals are. Be clear and authentic, as this is your chance to stand out.
Use Centralized Application Portals: Some countries, like the UK (UCAS) and Germany (Uni-Assist), have centralized portals where you can apply to multiple institutions in one place, reducing paperwork and saving time.

Step 4: Apply for Scholarships and Financial Aid
Studying abroad can be costly, but many universities offer scholarships, and some countries even provide government-funded options. Popular scholarships include:
Erasmus+ (EU): Offers scholarships for students studying within the EU.
Fulbright (U.S.): A competitive scholarship program for international students studying in the U.S.
Commonwealth Scholarships (UK): Available for students from Commonwealth countries.
DAAD Scholarships (Germany): Funded by the German government for international students.
Australia Awards: Provides scholarships for students from partner countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
Researching and applying for scholarships can make studying abroad more affordable and accessible.
Step 5: Preparing for Your Visa Interview (if required)
Some countries, like the U.S., require an in-person interview for student visas. Here are some tips to help you prepare:
Practice Common Questions: You’ll likely be asked about your study plans, finances, and career goals. Be prepared with clear, concise answers.
Bring Required Documents: Have all your documents organized, including your acceptance letter, financial proof, and any other relevant paperwork.
Be Confident and Honest: The interview is a chance to demonstrate your commitment to your studies, so be sincere and confident in your responses.
Step 6: Post-Arrival Tips and Support
Many countries and universities offer orientation programs to help international students settle in. Here are some key things to consider after arriving:
Attend Orientation Programs: These programs introduce you to campus facilities, local culture, and essential resources.
Set Up Local Bank Accounts: It’s practical to have a local bank account for managing expenses.
Connect with International Student Groups: These groups offer a support network and a way to make friends from around the world.
Understand the Health Insurance Requirements: Some countries require students to have specific health coverage, so check the guidelines and arrange for insurance as needed.

Understanding Education Loan Options
When considering your study abroad plans, exploring education loan options is essential. These loans can cover tuition fees, living expenses, and travel costs, making your educational journey more manageable. Here’s a breakdown of the primary sources for education loans:
1. Indian Nationalised Banks
Nationalised banks in India are often the first choice for students seeking education loans. They typically offer competitive interest rates and flexible repayment options. Major banks such as the State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, and Punjab National Bank have dedicated schemes for students who wish to study abroad, ensuring a reliable source of funding.
2. Private Banks
Private banks also provide attractive education loan products tailored for international studies. Institutions like HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank offer customized loan options, often featuring quicker processing times and benefits such as lower interest rates for women. These banks can be a great alternative if you’re looking for more personalized loan terms.
3. Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs)
NBFCs have gained popularity in the education loan sector due to their lenient eligibility criteria and fast disbursement processes. Companies like Credila and Avanse Financial Services focus specifically on funding overseas education, offering tailored solutions that cater to individual student needs. This can be particularly beneficial for those who may not meet traditional banking criteria.
Eligibility Criteria for Education Loans
Eligibility criteria for education loans can vary widely among lenders. However, common requirements include:
Indian Citizenship: Most lenders require applicants to be Indian citizens.
Admission Confirmation: You must provide proof of admission to an Australian university.
Co-applicant: A co-applicant, usually a parent or guardian, may be necessary to secure the loan.
Credit Score: A good credit history can improve your chances of loan approval.
Income Proof: Lenders may ask for income documentation from the co-applicant.
Essential Documentation
To apply for an education loan, you will typically need to submit several documents:
Loan Application Form: A completed form from your chosen lender.
Proof of Admission: An offer letter from an Australian institution.
Identity Proof: Such as your Aadhar card, passport, or voter ID.
Income Proof: Salary slips, income tax returns, or bank statements of your co-applicant.
Academic Records: Transcripts and certificates from your previous educational institutions.
Exploring Scholarship Opportunities
In addition to loans, don’t overlook the potential for scholarships. Many Australian universities offer scholarships specifically for international students, and government scholarships like the Australia Awards can cover tuition and living expenses.
