already drew something for this episode but the sketch for this piece has been in my drafts since like last April and now seemed like a better time than any to finally finish it up a little bit 👍

I’m on episode 43 and when Amber tells Koda “Magic’s there” in the new world, I went Oh. Because that’s the whole point, right? The whole premise of ethersea is that through the greed of people (and vestiges), magic became a force for destruction and ended the world. It’s why Tolliver wants to accelerate nature’s extinction and usher in the new world, because magic has ruined this one. It’s why Koda wants to exterminate magic, because he sees it as a virus that will only corrupt more worlds the further it spreads.

On its own, magic has tremendous potential — it can be used to help or harm, but that depends entirely on the actions of the person wielding it. Koda supposes that it is inevitable that people will abuse the potential given to them, and thus the potential to create and act itself must be dangerous. From this, he concludes that we shouldn’t be allowed to use magic, to act, to influence the world. A world without magic (without people) is the only safe world, to Koda.

But here’s Amber pointing out that magic is already there. The potential for us to do great and terrible things already exists before we even act. There is no perfect other world where humans don’t have the capacity to do harm. There’s no way to start over, or undo our influence on our surroundings entirely. But to write off humanity’s potential to do good, as Koda seeks to do, would only lead to more cruelty and destruction, because what are we left with then? We can only work with the people and the potential and the resources we have to improve the world that exists here and now.

The boring answer is she probably sends them to train and hone their skills with the Regulators until they can pass the test and earn their bracers. But the funnier answer is that they die during the test and she feeds their memories to Junior so nobody even remembers that they were ever there.

Stupid question but what was Lucretia’s plan if someone failed the test of initiation? Bc you have to be inoculated first. Was she going to kill them? Or like send them to the prison? Or if you failed would it be because the trolls killed you?

the problem with taz balance is you first listen to it as a naive high schooler like "oh, funny dnd podcast made by those mcelroy guys i see in tumblr memes all the time! and they apparently have gay characters too! let me check this out! haha his name is taco that's so random XD" and nobody could have warned you that a decade later you'll still periodically think about lucretia and her martyr complex and be stricken with the urge to start gnawing your own limbs off

Enough of the trope where memory loss undoes the damage or the corruption or whatever. More content where removing memories just removes the context.

The tragedy of needing to grieve and not knowing what or who you lost or why. The angst of having trauma and being denied the awareness that it's trauma. The suspense of being different somehow and left to wonder how and when. The tension of knowing that something is off and you can't find where it hurts. The Adventure Zone gets it. Kingdom Hearts gets it.

There is an aching inside you and you don't know how it got there.
