Note
okay this may be a loaded question but - where does one start with asterix. french or english material, doesn't matter
Not loaded at all! Astérix are all stand-alone, so there's no actual order you have to follow. However, I always recommend one starts with the first 24 albums, in any order that you'd please, then go on to the others up to 39.
The first 24 are written by Goscinny, and while I love all the Astérix eras for different reasons, when people talk about "Astérix" as a phenomenon, they mean Goscinny.
So, where to start?! Again, that's entirely up to you. To give you a guide, I'll sort them into categories that might interest you. (BOLD = FAVOURITE OF MINE!)
Group 1: Astérix and Obélix travel to all sorts of places that aren't Rome, with gags abound relating to every culture. Ever wanted a book that just shits on Germany for 40 pages? Look no further.
Asterix and the Golden Sickle (Paris)
Asterix and the Goths (Germany)
Asterix and the Banquet (France in general)
Asterix and Cleopatra (Egypt
Asterix in Britain (Britain)
Asterix and the Normans (Vikings)
Asterix at the Olympic Games (Greece)
Asterix in Spain (Spain)
Asterix in Switzerland (Switzerland)
Asterix in Corsica (Corsica)
Asterix and the Great Crossing (United States)
Asterix in Belgium (Belgium)
Group 2: The village (mostly just Astérix) deals with problems not solveable with magic potion alone. A great deal of satire about politics, economics, and interpersonal relationships.
Asterix and the Cauldron
Asterix and the Roman Agent
The Mansions of the Gods
Asterix and the Soothsayer
Asterix and Caesar's Gift
Obelix and Co. I cannot recommend this one enough.
Group 3: Astérix and Obélix just make the Romans' lives generally miserable on their own turf because, well, fuck you.
Asterix the Gaul
Asterix the Gladiator
Asterix and the Big Fight
Asterix the Legionary
Asterix and the Chieftain's Shield
Asterix and the Laurel Wreath
Group 4: Mais je veux lire en français ! Sous-estime pas mes compétences !
Okay, but don't say I don't spoil you. This took ages.
And if any links don't work or seem strange, all you need to do is Google "[name] PDF"! I have gotten many a virus while trying to read BD, but never from Astérix.
Have a wonderful time reading!

hi mag! it's moving-to-paris-soon anon! thanks for your previous advice <3 i don't really have any pressing questions rn, but i was wondering if you have any francophone tv shows or youtube channels you like (ideally w english subtitles/captions available, but if not that's okay)? my french is pretty okay but it really helps me to match up what i hear with what i read in order to brush up some more and get more used to the way french sounds. thanks in advance again!! (and kiss volga for me!!!!)
hi again! I don't watch much youtube in French tbh, but I like Squeezie (been watching him since I was in high school and he's still funny). this being said the arte youtube channel is amazing (arte is a publicly-funded francogerman tv station and they have amazing, thorough programs on literally everything, and they're v socially conscious. their website is arte.tv)
for shows etc I'd recommend the following:
Dix Pour Cent (Call My Agent in english iirc), it's on Netflix. I think I only watched the first 2 seasons, I need to catch up, but it's real good
heard good things about Au Service de la France (A Very Secret Service) but I haven't checked it out myself. It should be on Netflix too
En Thérapie on arte
Drag Race France honestly, it's on the france.tv website (public tv, here, and as an aside france.tv is also great for streaming) and I really liked it
Travail, Salaire, Profit, a 6-part series by arte with economists and philosophers discussing work and capitalism - genuinely very well done. the official uploads have been taken down but you can still find it here
not a show but if you can find Astérix et Obélix Mission Cléopâtre (live action) I highly recommend you watch it, it's a national treasure
hope this helps!!

A map of Katsuki’s village from my and @tsukithewolf‘s fanfiction ‘Of Gods And Dreams’. I left out the marking of one detail because of spoilers. Apologies for the poor quality, but A3 paper is sadly too big to scan :,3 Legend and finished map (with the small spoiler-detail) under the cut.
The different ‘sectors’
The whole village is surrounded by a tall, wooden protective wall made of trunks of entire trees. (Think a bit like the walls around the roman encampments or the Gallic village in Astérix and Obélix.) This is meant to be mostly a protection from the creatures living in the wild so they don’t attack the settlement. There are plank-passages on the inner side of the wall where Yuueians can walk, though there aren’t always guards patrolling there except at the main gate, since it’s not like anything or anyone has really any reason to attack the village.
1) The main bonfire – located in the center of the village, this is the place where everyone gathers for special occasions, like the yearly Magic Manifestation Ceremony or the Coming of Age. The bonfire itself is rather massive, the fire (when lit) able to reach higher than the huts are tall. When not lit, children sometimes try to climb it as part of a game or training (sometimes both), despite the adults repeatedly telling them off for it. Katsuki himself was notorious for climbing it all the time and was one of the few children stubborn enough to actually reach its top. As it is seldom lit, it is common for the wood used to make it up to last for an entire season cycle before a new bonfire needs to be built, which is usually done in late autumn or early winter.
2) Main living space - The part of the village where the Yuueians built their huts to live in. Clustered relatively close together, the huts aren’t separated from each other by any fences or anything. As this is the main part where people live and walk, the dirt has been walked barren, though there’s no actual delimited roads to speak of. This part of the village stretches from the North-West to the North-North-East, so that the huts are under the protection of the Twin Moons, which hang highest in the sky and shine the most brightly when they reach the Northern-most point of their nightly journey across the night sky. The Bakugou home is in the North-West area of this part of the village (B – though it marks the general area where it is, not the hut itself.)
3) Even further North are the huts of the Elders, the Village Leader and the Head Healer. These are slightly larger and, although not delimited any more than the regular huts, tend to have small gardens. There’s a lot more space between them as well. The Village Leader’s hut (L) is the one closest to the main living area (2.) and is one of the huts with the closest well. The Head Healer’s hut is in the Nothern-most part of this ‘sector’ (H) and doubles as the village’s main clinic.
4) Directly connected to the Head Healer’s hut and only accessible by passing through it (unless one jumps the fence), this is the Healers’ Garden, where medicinal herbs that are difficult to procure in the wild (either because they are rare or because they only grow at specific times of the season cycle) are grown. While the Head Healer has the main authority and responsibility over the garden, every Healer of the village helps tend to it as part of both their training and their duties.
5) Relatively close to the main gate, this is where the trading wagon is usually stored and/or prepared before a trading trip to Moardret. When it’s not the case, this is the area where some people can set up an equivalent to a small market, although the Yuueians rarely actually trade like this among themselves. It is far more common to just visit someone in their hut and exchange goods there.
6) The main gate, located in the East. There’s a rather vast open area right past it, with a meeting square and grassy fields. A lone road leads to the main bonfire, while another smaller one leads to the trading wagon. This is where the Yuueians converge when a Magicless is exiled.
7) Bathing area - An area where a Nature has been left free reign, allowing for a small, but compact forest to be part of the village. The trees are used as cover, for in the center of the shrubbery are two bodies of water: a lake and a large hot spring. This is where the Yuueians bathe. As they don’t bother separating the lake into two (because it would demand even more wood and they don’t want to harm Mother Nature more than strictly necessary for their survival), they separate genders for bathing by time. Children up to age ten bathe first, boys and girls together, then the men of all remaining ages and the women are last. This is so the women can take care of the children right after they bathe – particularly in case of the older ones where patching up some scrapes and bruises after training might be necessary – before bathing themselves.
8) The training ground, separated from the rest of the village by a wooden wall to avoid potentially catching someone in the cross-fire of an accident, particularly if it’s a magic one. There aren’t any physical delimitations of the different training grounds inside, but everyone is supposed to adhere to them anyway. Basic physical training and Magic training for young children who have not yet passed a Trial is the closes to the gate (marked with trees for the physical and small stars for Magic). The Hunters’ training ground (marked by a footprint and a trap) is the most stretched out because it’s made up of various parkour trails meant to challenge their stealth and agility, and also their ability to use and make various traps. One end of this training ground is thus closest to the corner where (training) weapons and traps are made and stored (marked with hammer, dagger, bow and arrow). The Warrior training ground (marked two crossed swords) is smack in the middle of all of them, being large and circular to allow for the most space to train combat.
9) The farming fields where crops etc. are grown. As with hunting for food, every Yuueian is expected to help out with caring for the fields if necessary, although there are those who are more farmers than others due to personal preferences and/or abilities. The entire community divides the work that needs to be done equally so that everyone pitches in everywhere as needed. (For instance, being a child of two Hunters and a Warrior himself, Katsuki has an affinity for hunting and extremely good skills with working the skins and meat of the provided game, so he mostly does that. However, if there are lacking hands in the fields, he’ll go help with farming as well.)
10) The storage part of the village, situated on the far West, on the opposite side to the main gate. This is mostly due to historical reasons, in order to protect their food reserves and other resources in case of someone attacking the village and breaching the main gate, although it has been centuries since a battle/war like that actually happened, as Lycans don’t bother with the Yuueians as much and other potentially hostile tribes are on the other side of the Draconic Mountain Range.
There are also several wells scattered throughout the village to account for the various places where one can be needed. Notably, one is located exactly between the training grounds and the farming fields, in a built-in shack that’s part of the wall surrounding the training grounds.
Map containing a spoilery detail:
Tumblr media
Spoiler-Legend:
S - The Sanctuary, a hut still within the boundaries of the village, but not built by the Yuueians. It has been erected by the Spring and Fall Spirits and, as the name implies, is a safe haven for those in need. Due to the spirits’ arcane magic, it is always perfectly habitable no matter what state it might seemingly be in on the outside. Similarly, as a safe place, it can only be found and entered by people in need of such a safe haven. When occupied, no one meaning the person looking for shelter within may see or come close to the Sanctuary and will automatically give the space around it a wide berth without ever truly realizing as much. This is the reason the space around the Sanctuary is empty and unused within the village, as most people avoid the space around it because they are not in need of it. (And potentially, because there’s someone seeking shelter inside from time to time, as the spirits have made a secret, underground entry to it once the village was errected.) This is the hut that becomes Katsuki’s home once he moves out of his parents’ house for good due to what happens between them.

1. Do you have any pets? Nope
2. What’s your favorite film? maaaan “favorite” questions are so hard. Look, I’m an indecisive little shit, you can’t expect me to choose just (1) thing. I’d say The Man From UNCLE, The Treasure Planet, and Astérix et Obélix Mission Cléopâtre. And in these cases, “favorite” means “movies I could probably watch every week until I die of old age” lol
3. Favorite celebrity? Probably Keira Knightley...? Idk, I don’t pay too much attention to celebrities
4. Favorite song. Once again, I CANNOT answer that ah ah. It would probably be a Radiohead song. I’m gonna say “Nude” right now, but I could say something else tomorrow, you know
5. Do you do sports? Yep, I love rollerblading. Also before the pandemic I used to go to the gym at least twice a week to do some cardio, but these days I go on wallks and work out at home instead.
6. Do you listen to movie soundtracks? Yep, and TV shows soundtracks too,
7. Do you have a tumblr crush? wouldn’t you like to know? ^^
8. Favorite blogs? I wouldn’t want to forget someone/leave anyone out so I’m not going to answer that one ah ah
I tag @yogurtfordinner (whom I have tagged recently, sorry I’m tagging you again ah ah), @stranger-steeb, @harringrovetrashh and @stevefuckingharrington, if you guys feel like it and haven’t been tagged already ;)
Also if anyone sees this and wants to do it, feel free to say I tagged you :)

Thank you @sans-rancune-sans-regrets !
1. How has your day been?
Good. I'm finally getting some sleep. The sun is shining, my flat is clean. I just badly miss dancing.
2. What’s the last thing that made you smile?
I watched Astérix et Obélix : Mission Cléopâtre yesterday night, and I just thought about how a horrible bore I am, mouthing a good part of the dialogues.
3. What’s keeping you entertained these days?
When I'm not working (which doesn't happen often, yes, it's bad, I know) I read (bonus point if there's sunlight) and I try to do physical activities in my living room. I've been cooking a lot, recently, but it's no fun because I have no one yo share it with. Also, my cousins and I are doing a "Lockdowned Princess" challenge.
4. If you are currently in some kind of quarantine/self-isolation:
Yep ! And I'm trying not to go out more than necessary because I want this to be over very soon. All this just confirmed that I am part dandelion, part stupid dog, and re-part human behind.
5. Post a selfie if you’re comfortable with it:
Tumblr media
Told you. Half-flower, half-stupid dog.

So over the passed few weeks you may have noticed a change in the quality of our Gamecube videos. That’s because we were sent a Nintendo GameCube HDMI Display Adapter from Kaico to review.
The video review is due to be uploaded to our channel very soon and Kaico supplied us with a copy of the unit to test and review. In the short term we wanted to show you the quality of the device, with a selection of screenshots taken using the device and captured directly from a Elgato HD Pro60. All of these were taken using the Gamecube’s 480p progressive scan mode. In some cases this was achieved with the help of the homebrew software program called SWISS that can force games into 480p and 576p modes, in the event a title didn't originally support them.
Kaico Nintendo GameCube HDMI Display Adapter is a device that plugs into the Digital AV Out port on the Gamecube. The digital port was in model dol-001 of the Gamecube and was removed from later dol-101 models, so make sure your cube has a digital av out port if you do want to pick one up.
This device also includes I.Korb GCVideo software, which does a number of features including line doubling and optional scanline filters. The output quality is excellent and using the Gamecube's digital output it delivers a cleaner and sharper picture than the Wii's YPbPr ouput at 480p, in all our comparison tests.
While there are official component leads for the Gamecube, they were never released in Europe and only in very limited amount in the rest of the world. So are very rare and expensive to buy these days.
Add to the fact that the Gamecube can also play Game Boy Advance games with a GBA Player and you have a huge library of games that can now be played in 480p HD on most HDMI TV.
We've tested it heavily over the past few weeks to insure its quality and we can confirm it worked with everything we tested it with from PAL and NTSC title at 576i, 576p, 480i, 40p and retro titles that run at 240p. Retro games we tested it with include, The Legend of Zelda: Collectior's Edition, Mega Man X Collection and The Tower of Druaga (A Japanese only NES Gamecube port).
On the channel the following videos were captured with it:
Capcom vs SNK 2
youtube
Smashing Drive
youtube
Final Fight One
youtube
Our Astérix & Obélix XXL from the other day on Gamecube also used it.
If you are interested in picking one up you can get it from Kaico official website or their amazon UK store.
Over the next week will be doing a screenshot comparison of the device as well against the Wii. Along with a guide on using an Action Replay and or SWISS with a HDMI Display Adapter like this one to force PAL only 50Hz games into 480i or 480p on Gamecube.
Finally the games in the pictures are as follows, going from top right to bottom left: Astro Boy (GBA), Final Fight One (GBA), Mario Power Tennis, 1080 Avalanche (Widescreen force via SWISS), Mega Man 8 - Mega Man Anniversary Collection, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, TimeSplitters 3: Future Perfect, Mr. Driller Drill Land, Zelda: Ocarina of Time - The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition & Kururin Squash!

How fitting that the battle against the Empire in France should have one small group holding out against their dominance of the country.
I am not sure how recognisable this reference is to American readers, but it seemed very familiar to me, a reference to the long running Astérix series of bandes dessinées. From the very first album (Astérix Le Gaulois), the area inhabited by Astérix and his friends held out against the Romans: in 3 panels we see the defeat of France, and then the 4th panel, with a map of the country, states ‘Toute la Gaule est occupée’ (All Gaul is occupied). The fifth panel, an image of a magnifying glass zooming in on the North West, has a caption beginning ‘Toute? Non!....’ (All? No!).
Thus the scene was set for this village of indomitable Gauls, (super-)powered by a magic potion and a refusal to give in. Each album bears a title page reminding us of this, ‘Toute? Non!’ almost becoming a mantra for their resistance to the powers that be.
It’s been a while since I read the English versions (for a long time a staple, alternating with Tintin, of a Sunday newspaper supplement- I forget which- at a page a week, cut out and saved for me by grandparents to read) but I am sure this ‘Not quite all. One small group remains..’ is from an English incarnation of Goscinny and Udérzo’s work. If it’s not, it’s a damn fine coincidence, and perfectly apt for a situation in which a small group of super-powered individuals fight back against the forces that seek to rule the world (even if they rely less on magic potions and druids, sadly).
Even so far on from 50BC, the spirits of Astérix, Obélix and all their fellow Gauls, fuel the flames of resistance in their homeland.

I'm thinking about that Roman Astérix AU again... I was too scared to post it back when Astérix was my SpIn because I thought it was cringe but I actually like it now.
Basically... imagining a universe where Astérix lives in a conquered area of Gaul, and as a man who wants to be the village warrior having now lost the war against the Romans feels useless and out of place. He's a bit insistent on doing everything by himself; he doesn't engage in trade with the other people and instead goes hunting alone, even as it gets harder and harder to find anything with the Romans' construction into wild forests. Basically, he's a guy with no where to go and no real purpose. Eventually he's enlisted as a Roman legionary (by choice or not would both be interesting ideas, so I'm not sure yet). There he has considerably more value, even if he's conflicted about it; his agility and quick thinking makes him a favourite of the Centurion; he seems to have a future here. He gets by, not sure how to take it. He doesn't drink in moderation. Especially when the other legionnaries talk about their friends and wives at home.
The Centurion calls Astérix in (is he now going by Asterus? Whatwilbecomofus? Maybe. You decide.) one day and tells him, as his favourite legionary, he's giving Astér a special mission. They need to destabilise the village on the coast of Brittany if they want any hope of conquering it. Surely Astér, with his wit and warrior's mind, can think of something?
So Astér sets off, not entirely sure what he's going to do yet. Alone, of course, he still does everything by himself. It goes well enough.
In reaching the village, he spends a good while scouting out the place and what he might do (being small and nimble as he is, it's not too hard). He settles upon kidnapping a villager - but only one who's sort of unpopular - so they fight over whether to go and save them, creating division and hopefully leaving them confused before they get pummelled by the Romans.
His first thought is Assurancetourix/Cacofonix, but he's discovered that even he goes to fight when the Romans show up and that, besides his singing, the villagers seem to like him. That leaves a peculiar choice. Obélix.
Obélix, having never met Astérix in this universe, is pacifist to a fault. Not out of any moral obligation, but he's just not all that concerned about standing up for himself; he doesn't go to fight the Romans because fighting is scary, and the other village Gauls are always talking about what a drag he is. Since he never fell in the potion, he isn't strong enough to carry around menhirs, and doesn't ever think to ask Panoramix for any. Hence he doesn't trade, he doesn't fight, he doesn't really have any friends. He hunts boar for himself and that's about it.
Astér knows he could easily capture him because he wouldn't resist, but rather just sort of accept it. However, since his moustache has since grown back, he's actually able to convince Obélix that he's not a legionary at all - just another Gaul, a friend of a cousin from his family in Lutecia, and oh won't you go back with me and help me with something something. It works. Obélix being a bit dumb is true in any universe.
From here, I'm not sure what might happen. I know Astér will begin to take him back to the legionary camp, and slowly they'll become friends. They'll meet Idéfix on the way, and Obélix, so pure of heart, will insist they keep him. Talks about how nice it is to have allies with you on big journeys. Astér has never heard anything like that before. He ends up taking detours, not wanting to actually turn Obélix in.
What I know is that the village Gauls definitely come for Obélix, and Astér is shocked because he didn't think there was such an intense amount of solidarity between them. I also know that Astér eventually writes to his garrison and pretends to be a group of bandits saying they've captured yer best warrior and he'll be dead in 3 days if ye don't come get him!. He means it as a way of faking his death so he doesn't have to go back. He's still upset when they don't come get him.
Astérix eventually moves to the indomitable village. He wants to be a warrior again, and maybe not do everything by himself anymore. And Obélix, inspired by Astérix's rants about how you really ought to stand up for yourself and you can't be walked over all the time and etc etc etc., agrees to try a bit of the potion. They sneak into the druid's house, same as canon. Astérix doesn't really know how the potion works, so he just tells Obélix to drink it all. Exactly what happened as a kid, happens again. All is right with the world.
