I came out to everyone I knew when I was thirteen and my parents still think it's a phase. They say they're supportive and proud of me but then they call me gross and an attention-seeker when I'm not around. I feel I need their help if I ever want to transition. They say "we support you but you're never changing your name or getting hormones." I don't know what to do because I'm punished whenever I bring it up and I just feel trapped w no one to talk to IRL. Can't even tell twin brother

I’m going to be answering on the assumption that you’re still a minor. If that is an incorrect assumption, just let me know and I can let you know where some things would change.

Family is one of the biggest hurdles we face in our journeys. From their perception they have had an identity for their children from half-way through pregnancy until we tell them any different. While we wrestle with our gender presentation, possibly for years, it comes to them as a brand new experience that needs to be worked through. I am not making an excuse, just giving a perspective.

Individual and family counseling would be the best recommendation I can offer. A counselor is supposed to act as a neutral third party and can sometimes help us voice the things we need to say, but are difficult without support.

If health coverage is an issue, there are options: in America there is the Affordable Healthcare Act which can help families afford health insurance. Many states have programs through Medicaid funding that will cover physical and mental health care. There are also numerous mental health care providers who can offer a sliding cost scale to make their services more affordable. Getting that information will require phone calls. A school counselor can provide an option, as well, though the scope of their options may be limited.

An important point to remember is that as a minor anything and everything said to a counselor can be relayed to your parents. I don’t say this to discourage you from talking with a professional, just that conversation topics may progress faster than intended.

If counseling is not an option, find something outside of your home network. Book clubs, study groups, sports (I recommend martial arts as it usually doesn’t have a separation of gender). These activities expose us to another people and external validation of worth. An opportunity to find a confidant may present itself, as well, which will give you the opportunity to talk with someone IRL, as well.
