i thought it would be harder to go back. i thought it would affect me more, to cycle through those same streets that were my daily life, all those years ago, now. i thought it would be harder to go back, back to a hone that’s not mine anymore and a life i have desperately missed every day since i left it. maastricht has become a place of such sadness, these last two years, a city i love and miss in such an overwhelming way, the city that broke my heart the day i left it, a city where i found myself in ways i hadn’t expected to, and a city i had to leave behind. 

every time i went to think about planning a return visit in the last eighteen months, i could never bring myself to do more than just dream about what it might feel like to go back, wonder if it would feel the same, or better, or worse - i never bought the tickets.

i bought the ticket, this time. and spent an hour and forty five minutes dreading it, sitting in my seat on the train and wondering how do you explain why you feel so sad to return to a place you love so much to the friends who are so excited to catch a glimpse of the life you had there?
