Them: Hey, do you think we see red the same? Like, how do we know that what you call red is the same as what I call red?
Me, when I still young and naieve: Don’t be ridiculous, of course my red is the same as your red. We can tell when people see colours differently, obviously, otherwise we wouldn’t know colourblindness is a thing!
Me now, many years later, post-ADHD diagnosis: Not only is our perception of colour different depending on eye colour and gender, every single sensory experience can be perceived differently depending on one’s unique neurobiology. Your smell is not my smell, your sound is not my sound, your taste is not my taste, your touch is not my touch, and no, in all liklihood, your red is not my red
Them: …
Me: THERE IS NO WAY OF KNOWING WHICH OF OUR EXPERIENCES ARE TRULY UNIVERSAL AND THE UNIQUE PERCEPTION AND THOUGHT OF ANOTHER’S MIND IS AS STRANGE AND UNKNOWABLE AS AN ALIEN PLANET IN A FAR OFF GALAXY
#philosophy#neurodivergence#neurodivergent#also yeah for those of yall who didnt know#men and women perceive colours differently#something to do with women having more rods and cones than men#and being able to distinguish between shades better#also did yall know thag some people cannot visualise and/or hear the little voice in their head#its called aphantasia#like the way that i thibk is exclusively through my minds eye and my internal monologue#and some people dont have either of those things and they think. just. without either.#like i can understand thinking in exclusively pictures#or exclusively the monologue#but like#with neither?#thats wild yo and i cannot conceptualize it#from the descriptions i hear of aphantasia#is SOUNDS like their experience of thought and memory isn’t tied to any one of the five senses?#but is like….just kind of…instinct?#but idk im not an aphantasia expert#its wild tho
