In The Lake of Reflection, Janna mentions that there was a previous Mjuzi at the Tree of Life who passed away. Her staff is given to Makini when she arrives with the Guard.

Most of the fandom assumes it's another mandrill that preceeded Makini, (given how we already have 2 mandrill advisors in canon) but I personally like to believe it was an orangutan who was Makini's predecessor.

For one, it was never said whether or not the mjuzi was a mandrill, or even a primate.

But another being how orangutans are very knowledgable about the millions of other types of flora and fauna within their habitat, to the point where they can even utilize medicine from the leaves around them in order to treat muscle and flesh wounds. So an orangutan as a part-time-healer, part-time-shawman? It tracks in my eyes.

And thirdly, the Tree of Life is set in Asia, though the show doesn't do the best job at utilizing that setting well in my opinion. I think an Orangutan being the Mjuzi there would provide a good balance and differentiate the Tree of Life from the Pride Lands just well enough.

TLDR: I headcanon that the previous Tree of Life Mjuzi was an orangutan. Thank you for coming to my ed talk.
