A Comprehensive Guide To the Ancient Ways

i was joking in my last post, but this ended up taking me almost precisely two hours. Behold: a compilation of every Way, Hub, or relevant Magykal shenanigan mentioned in canon (well, mentioned in the TodHunter Moon trilogy)

MARCIA'S KEEP HUB

Way VII — the Wizard Tower blind Way (from this blind Way, Tod takes nine Hubs to get home (starchaser p259)). Garmin came out of II into VII

Way XI—leads to Overgrown Hub

Way II—leads to peaceful wild-rose Hub

OVERGROWN HUB: contains a small spring with copper bowl, near a beach with ocean waves, overgrown garden, yellow flowers. Located on a small island off the “long coast of the Blue Mountains” according to Marwick. Marwick says it takes “Fifteen Hubs” to get back to the Castle from here (contradicts Tod’s PathFinding in previous book, though it's not explicitly stated that this is the same Hub as from the end of PathFinder. The named numbers on the archways match up between PathFinder and SandRider, but the descriptions of these locations are very different. I'm assuming these are the same place, since the lore matches even if the prose doesn't.)

Way VI—the Way taken by Grula when leading the expedition at the end of PathFinder into the HotW (presumably same Way Tod &co took, as Simon followed Lucy’s ribbon trail)

UNNUMBERED WAYS AND UNNAMED HUBS

Many of the Hubs and Ways described are not given specific numbers or names, as they're more set dressing than plot. Here's all the ones I could find and my best guesses, in some cases.

Tod’s journey to the Heart of the Ways takes us through (PathFinder p384):

“Hub full of small, writhing green snakes”

“Hub deep in a cave”

“[Hub] covered in snow and ice”

“[Hub] used as an aviary for exotic birds”

“[Hub] that was...a busy market”

“[Hub] where a lone old woman sat knitting...with wide, sightless eyes” (old woman Hub leads directly to HotW)

the Temple of the Dragon Boat (underneath Keeper’s Cottage) has a blind Way leading to the Jungle Hub (mentioned by Marwick, & the Jungle is labeled on front of book map on west African coast)

there is also a blind Way out of the Manuscriptorium (leads somewhere near the Port of Singing Sands)

Darius’ directions to Port of Singing Sands: II-X-IV-I-XI-X-V-III-IV-VIII

“It took her through a nest of snakes, a giant spiderweb, a tar pit, a circle of wailing spirits, and many other strange and frightening places” (sandrider p179). ends in Blind Way in PoSS. the snake pit is labeled on front of book map (in brazil)

blind(?) Way into charcoal-burners’ huts in the Forest

Jim Knee: “i followed you...the first one I tried I ended up in some ghastly snowy forest. So I tried the next and when I got into the courtyard I saw your footprints.”(sandrider p361)

(now hold on a second, didn’t they use a charcoal-burner hut in Queste somehow? is that the snowy forest? am i going crazy or remembering correctly? either way, Jim Knee seems like he's describing the huts as the Hub)

Way in courtyard with palm tree in Red City—leads to charcoal burner hut Way (no Hub? Kaznim doesn’t describe a Hub in the courtyard—sandrider p317. possibly the Forest huts are Hub)

& on sandrider page 278, when Tod goes through random archways as she tries to escape the Kraan:

“Four more Hubs went by. There was another temple, this time small, dark and damp. There was a circle of huts inside a palisade, each hut with a Way inside. There was a Hub in the basement of a castle, where hundreds of rats emerged from their burrows in the walls...

“...Tod was already in the next Hub—a lake of milky green water. The sky was a deep blue, air warm and scented with blossom, noisy with...cicadas. The Hub was bordered by a low wall of crumbling sandstone...from each arch a line of stepping-stones led to a...flat rock in the middle...”

and finally, the last Way to be mentioned is the blind Way under the Metal Fish crater in the ocean (starchaser p395)

I got into dabi*hawks because of the potential of rivals/enemies-to-lovers and I thought they could have really interesting interactions and fics involving them could delve into some really interesting areas about morality and the grey areas (and the fact that they’re basically foils, a son of a villain who became a hero blinded to certain shortcomings and the son of a hero who became a villain because that was all he saw, yet they share similarities in their fucked up childhoods and the fact they’re basically going further down ‘bad’ paths in the current chapters, the fact they’re on different sides but in another life in another context in different events they may have been able to relate to each other..)..all to say I basically just started liking it because the idea of them interacting and their dynamic was interesting especially if they’re forced to consider the other’s views and work together (hawks in general I’m a big fan of vigilante or villain fics where he becomes more against how fucked hero society is and decides to take an alternate path to fix it) and I think hawks deciding to take more of the villains’ side is a more interesting plot line than if he ultimately dies trying to make up for his mistakes a hero, but..I feel like with how popular dabi*hawks got people think people only ship it because it’s hot or whatever and the view of it has significantly tipped down to where people get made fun of. (even though I feel hero/villain pairings are popular for a lot of these reasons in basically any media.) I have no idea where I was going with this when I started typing but I wanted to express my appreciation for finding a blog that can both like the content while neither pretending canon events didn’t happen/justifying bad things either one did nor acting like dabi*hawks fans are rabid yaoi fans who “ignore canon for their hot ship” or support abuse (I’ve never understood that one, they’re on opposite sides in canon and of course are going to fight, it’s not an interpersonal relationship in canon, so that’s basically saying all enemies to lovers is abuse regardless of context for no real reason, which is like of insulting as an abuse survivor)

One, the immense popularity, and subsequent lack of quality of shipping (as with everything, not everything made is good, and a lot of it isn't meant to be 'good' as you or I define it) does in fact give people the wrong perception or a very skewed one.

Additionally, some Dabihawks fans are in a bit of a tight spot where very hero-approving Hawks fans, the type who think he did nothing wrong, think the pairing is just a bunch of denial of little substance, meanwhile the other of the spectrum, a lot of hard-core villain stans hate it due to Hawks not living up to a lot of the 'promise' much of us saw early on.

And you talk about that promise; hit it dead on. Hawks's narrative is fascinating due to a lot of the could haves. It's why he is so richly paralleling most of the League. It's why his character is so goddamn complex.

Dabihawks started as a joke you know, I remember it. I was still new in the fandom and skipping ahead because I hate the overhaul arc when Hawks debuted. And at that point I hadn't really focused too much on the villains besides liking Dabi for being very obviously connected to Shouto, but Mirshroom kind of drew a "what if hawks and dabi went to hero school together and knew each other" thing even before we knew Hawks was a spy, and we all started calling it hotwings and thinking of the irony since Hawks was a walking icarus parallel to us...

And then.. The narrative happened.

Suddenly we were embroiled in a spy plot, and an intriguing story of a boy forced to become a hero who looked up to Endeavor, and Endeavor's likely son, born to be a hero but couldn't be one, so he became a villain. And Hawks had to work with him, pretend to be a villain.

It was beautiful.

It is beautiful.

It's gotten so much better: Hawks, the son of a villain, saved by Enji. Dabi, who has ruined Hawks's life, and yet, managed to free his shackles by destroying the cage, and yet Hawks will go back and defend the man he feels created him.

Even people who hate the pairing, and there are many good reasons I can list of stuff I don't care for in portrayals, might find it hard to deny; the setup reads like a Greek tragedy.

It reads like an epic romance novel.

And no one says those end happily, in fact, the appeal is, that they usually don't but so much of what affects us in the end is the knowledge it could have.

The clashing of two different ideologies, two perceptions of wrong and right, of justice.. One boy who was 'saved', one who wasn't.

There's so much richness that can be mined in the dynamic.

And, I guess, many are let down by canon not delivering. First off, clearly whatever this stuff between Hawks and Dabi is, it's still happening. There's unanswered questions and Horikoshi did not choose to end 299 and 300 in the exact same panel for both of them for nothing.

Whatever Hawks's fate is, it's tied to Dabi. It's tied to the Todoroki storyline. We don't know what will happen. There's been so many fics early on of us predicting one will try to kill the other - usually Dabi, and it's happened, but it might happen in reverse. That Hawks might try and kill Dabi.

The more optimistic among us, like me, can hope that Hawks somehow redeems himself by returning to his real origins - not of loving Endeavor, but being the boy who saved people he didn't know. By actually beinf a hero and saving someone who by all accounts shouldn't be saved, even if it means his life.

Even this far, through this much, can't you see how there's still so much ifs and can happens?

That's the beauty of it.

This is not a post, I think, saying other pairings are worse, or lack these qualities. Because that isn't true. But it is a post explaining why, even in the swamp of awful out of character portrayals, or people undervaluing the importance of the League, or ignorant inconvenient truths about Hawks's motivations and character, there is still so much promise and beauty in dabihawks. It's why I still ship it, and why I likely will until the end.

It's not happy. It's not neat. Like most enemies to lovers ships, there is messiness. But canon has provided a framework full of potential and exploration. And that's why it's still here as a ship.

Because we see the beauty in it.

So, I was scrolling through my dash, as you do, and I found something. A little post that made me realize something. Now, I would have put this in a reblog of the post that made me think of this, but I’m about to contradict the shit out of that post so I decided to make my own post instead.

Shipping BakuDeku is not a moral failing. Yup. There. I said it. It’s as clear and straight forward as that. And I’ll say it again so it sinks in, shipping Izuku with Bakugo is not a moral failing, and I’ll steal the toes of anyone who says otherwise, because I’m right, you’re wrong, and that’s that.

That being said, fetishizing bullying and abuse is 100% a moral failing and you should stop this instant you sick sick fuck.

Are you seeing the line I’m drawing?

Shipping BakuDeku and fetishizing abuse are two completely different things and you better acknowledge it. They are fictional characters, and you better start acting like it. They are not real people, so shipping them in a scenario where they’ve made up and no longer have problems with each other is not a problem, and I bring that up because that’s the most common type of BakuDeku shipping I see. Where Bakugo has apologized, Izuku has forgiven him and they’re working towards having a healthier friendship. That is what BakuDeku shippers want, not Bakugo beating the shit out of Izuku while they have s*x. Get that image out of your mind because the shippers like that are few and far between, and even BakuDeku shippers hate the freaks who draw and write that shit.

Now I’m going to address a common issue people have with BakuDeku. “Abuse victims shouldn’t enter romantic relationships with their abusers” is a mantra commonly spread around in the BakuDeku hate circles, and you know what? They’re right, sometimes. When it comes down to it, abuse victims are people, not damsels in distress who can’t think for themselves, and can make their own choices about what they want. If they decide that their abuser has changed and they think they can be around them safely, and maybe even want to engage in a deeper relationship, so long as they are prioritizing taking care of themselves there is not a single problem with that. You do not get to decide how victims treat their abusers, so stop acting like you do.

Another common mantra is “But Bakugo hasn’t changed at all!” And you’d be right, but that’s the great thing about fiction! You get to make shit up! If you want to write a Bakugo who’s spent years mending his bond with Midoriya and has apologized seven ways from Sunday and then some, you can! If you want to write a Bakugo who all of sudden just realizes he’s a piece of shit and is trying to make it up to Izuku, fucking go for it you funky little writer! This is a stupid argument because it’s fiction and you can just write a world where he has changed to ship BakuDeku in. Next question.

“BakuDeku is toxic”. So it Hotwings. So is Inatodo. Is that stopping you? Dabi and Hawks are both murderers trying to murder each other. Inasa saw Todoroki for one (1) second and instantly started picking fights and attacking him. You think those are healthy relationships compared to BakuDeku? Get your head out of your ass. Bakugo and Izuku will actually change their dynamic (Horikoshi said as much), they won’t be toxic by series end. Also my previous point, you can just write a world where it isn’t toxic. This point is stupid.

Tl;dr: Shipping BkDk is not a moral failing, shipping BkDk and fetishizing abuse are two different things, and most BkDk’s ship it wholesoemly, and they think the fetishy freaks are disgusting.

The first character I first fell in love with: Ok where do I begin with? 😂 When someone told me to watch bnha I was sceptical at first bc I didn't like the art style that much but then I saw a post ab Bakugou calling everyone nerds which was hilarious considering that he ranked 3rd in class' mid-term grades. And I was like "oh nice he's a nerd but cool" so I googled his pictures and he looked all spiky and black so I decided to give it a shot. Turns out I hated his character. 😂 But I liked everything else so I stayed + the fanbase is huge and I thought it'd be lots of fun. Later I saw Dabi and yea, he remained my fave till this day.

The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Shigaraki. At first he behaved like a brat and I was annoyed with him. Now he's one of my faves.

The character everyone else loves that I don’t: Bakugou 😂 (sry I don't get it). I'm also pretty neutral of Shinsou, Aizawa and Todoroki bc I have a feel that I'd love them if the fandom didn't ruin them for me (which doesn't mean that I hate em I say that I'm neutral while everyone else is psyched over em).

The character I love that everyone else hates: Overhaul, I saw lots of hate for him but I don't mind him + listening to asmr videos did smtng to me. 😂 I also like Monoma and Hawks (Hawks doesn't get that much hate but some ppl still hate him for what he did to Twice).

The character I used to love but don’t any longer: Idk this never happened.

The character I would totally smooch: All the villains? And Hawks?

The character I’d want to be like: I don't.

The character I’d slap: Mineta, Endeavor and Overhaul (ass)

A pairing that I love: huwumi and dabiten (I'm, like, the only person that ships it 😅)

Ch.1 (1017 words)

Finally posting it mother fuckers

Just so you know when you read this your signing up for a shit ton of angst, some drug abuse, and Hotwings lot’s of that ship. And don’t worry the grammar gets better as we go farther, this fic is now the reason I know my to’s.

@keigo-a-gogo gave me some of the prompts that show up in later chapters @magical-girl-04 and @imacowboy3 wanted villain Hawks so here he is.

The next chapter is scheduled for exactly a week from now so don’t ask when it’ll be updated.

“What kind of hero would I be if I ignored a villain standing right in front of me?” Hawks joked as Dabi walked up to the roof the two agreed to meet up on. “I honestly didn’t expect you to show, especially alone.” “What can I say?” Hawks said, “I’m tired of being a doormat for them to step on, I’m done.” Dabi looked at the winged man for a bit contemplating in his head weather or not he should trust the #2 hero, especially with his connections to his father. “Why are you looking at me like that? Didn’t you hear me!” “How do I know I can trust you.” Dabi said looking at Hawks in a skeptical way “I’ll give you my phone I don’t care.” Dabi didn’t expect that he expected the man to fly off as soon as his motives were questioned, “fine give me your phone I’ll give it back to you tomorrow same time same place.” As Hawks throws his phone to Dabi he contemplates most of his life, living as a puppet. Once Hawks snapped out of it Dabi was already gone. As Dabi settled down with a drink in his grungy little apartment at the leagues base he started to go through Hawks’ phone, starting with phone numbers he had lots of friends but 10 times more hookups. After having gone through his contacts Dabi went through his Spotify expecting, well he didn’t know what he was expecting but it certainly wasn’t what he found. After the shock of Hawks’ spotify Dabi went to Hawks’ camera roll he believed you could tell a lot about a person by the photos they take. Hawks had a very interesting camera roll; he had lot’s of nature pictures taken from high up, but he also had many pictures of wounds presumably from fights. After scrolling through what seemed like hundreds of party shots and pictures of him doing stupid shit like what looked to be arson Dabi found a photo of what seemed to be Hawks’ nightstand with bottles of liquor and prescription meds. Dabi really didn’t expect the constantly smiling man to be as angsty as he was, but he also didn’t expect the #2 to approach him and want to join him but there he was. As Dabi was about to close the phone and refresh his drink he saw a little t icon that he knew all too well “well I’ll be damned number two has tumblr, I have to see this.” It was mostly text posts about random stuff that was all too relatable and quite a few cropped photos of him in some interesting outfits, no one seemed to know it was him. Before Dabi knew it it was morning and he had polished off a whole bottle of gin. Hawks was definitely a more complex person than Dabi had previously thought, before this Dabi had seen the “hero” as a very single sided person, now he wasn't sure what he saw him as Hawks was no damsel in distress but he certainly needed some help. As the time for the two to meet up Hawks became more anxious, he was unsure of what Dabi had checked on his phone and knew he had some stuff on there that was definitely concerning and if this whole villain thing didn’t work out he didn’t want the world to know some of the number two’s secrets. Still Hawks flew up to the roof they had previously met. He was 10 minutes early, so he decided to light a cigarette to chase off some of the thoughts and anxiety burdening his mind. As he was mid way through his first cigarette Dabi came through the rooftop door “They'll kill you ya know.” He said sarcastically as he lit his own using his finger as a lighter. “Catch” Dabi said, throwing Hawks his phone, Hawks barely caught it before it fell off the edge of the building where he was sitting having forgotten about his wings and what they could do. “So?” Hawks asked with a questioning tone, “so” Dabi mimicked his tone “am I allowed to ask what you went through?” “Well I guess it’s only fair” Dabi said to him listing everything he had looked at “your contacts why do you have so many people labeled hook up, whatever it doesn't matter, spotify not at all what I expected by the way” Hawks looked in awe while Dabi continued speaking “camera roll, I don’t really have any commentary for that one, and last I went through tumblr, living in the 2000’s still are we birdy.” “My camera roll” he gulped “yes birdy you heard me right camera roll, by the way I feel obligated to ask, you good?” Hawks wasn’t sure what to say to the villain, tell the scarred man the truth or lie so he just didn’t and waited for Dabi to continue the conversation, instead of continuing the conversation Dabi came and sat next to the crimson winged man, with a sigh Dabi said “look I’m probably gonna regret this but let’s go out for the night, hell I’ll even buy you a drink.” Hawks had seen that look before “I don’t need your sympathy” Hawks had said almost simultaneously Dabi cut in saying “I’m not sympathetic toward you birdy maybe I want to go and get you drunk so you’ll spill your secrets to me.” Hawks looked at him in awe thinking for a second before asking “is this your way of asking me on a date?” Hawks wasn’t entirely sure whether or not he himself was being sarcastic or not. “You really think I have that little game, no this wasn’t me asking you out” Dabi was smirking even though it almost wasn't visible “fuck it sure it’s not like I have anything to do” Dabi hesitated for a second having not expected Hawks to say yes so easily “meet me at Gordan’s in an hour, and leave the wings at home birdy.” And before Hawks could respond Dabi was gone.

Hi Guys, It’s Grey.

So I know we haven’t been super active lately. School has been pretty hectic for us, and I don’t have any more prewritten fics to post.

Currently Emma is arting away as often as she can. Unlike me, Emma is in school full time so her content is a little more spread out. I am only in school part time, but even i do still get swamped with work, and will probably post a little less often.

As of right now, i’m focusing my energy into one fic.

HotWings w/ Actual Hot Wings: A #dabihawks Cooking AU

Hear me out.

Basically, canon is still the same ‘cept for the fact that Touya, after a particularly heinous stint at the hospital due to ‘training’ from none other than his dear ol’ dad Enji, runs away at 14. With no more than $50 in his pocket and a worn family photo (sans Enji), Touya takes to the streets -- doing what he can to make a buck and get by, which includes stealing whatever he can get his hands on to pawn off to another.

One night, after more than a year away from ‘home’ and having gone nearly two days with no food, Touya decides to ransack a random whole-in-the-wall izakaya in desperation. Of course, since Touya is the unluckiest kid alive, he gets caught by none other than restaurant owner Satou -- who instead of immediately running him out of his place, makes Touya actually cook something out of the ingredients poorly hidden in his arms (“Quirk or no quirk, what were you going to do with a whole chicken, kid? Eat it raw? With no seasoning?”).

Anyways, Touya ends up making something HORRID cause he’s a 15 year-old teen who has no idea what ‘marinating’ means, but Satou takes a liking to him nonetheless and ends up making dinner for the both of them. Touya doesn’t offer up much as to who he is or where he’s from, and while he’s a bit unnerved about how much Satou reminds him of his dad physically, even he can tell the two are worlds apart in terms of emotional competence.

Still, that doesn’t mean Touya trusts Satou exactly (cause by this point, Touya has seen too much and knows too well how cruel the world can be), so when Satou goes to take their dishes to the sink, Touya makes to leave like he’s prepared to be kicked out. Like any normal person, this alarms Satou -- (“How can a kid this young stay looking like they’re ready for the rug to be pulled out from under them at all times?”) -- and with one look at Touya’s skittish fidgeting and barely-bandaged burns hidden under two-sizes too large clothes, Sato decides then and there that he’s gonna give this kid a home.

Basically, Satou takes Touya as his apprentice, and teaches him how to channel all his feelings (trauma, anger, fear, freedom) into food. With a roof over his head, a gruff-but-good-natured guardian, a healthy outlet and a new passion, Dabi never manifests and instead Touya (just, Touya) continues to quietly cook away at Satou’s izakaya for years. It’s a peaceful life, one where he’s even managed to establish a tepid reconnection with his siblings once he turned 18, up until the No. 3 hero Hawks (soon-to-be No. 2, if the Kamino Ward incident is anything to go by) inconspicuously walks into Satou’s and asks for the chicken kaarage special.

Of course, that’s Touya’s speciality, ever since that first night he tried to steal from Satou’s kitchen.

For Hawks, it’s love at first bite.

(So I realized this became more of a prequel rant to my actual AU idea, so my thots around y’know...how Dabi/Hawks actually interact will be posted soon.)

note: this post mentions endeavor a lot.

context (very important!): I pretty much binge-read an entire tumblr user’s meta posts and I found them interesting and very informative.

I also read through their salt tag and now I’m compelled to gather my thoughts together considering the literal title I’ve held for months now is “Hawks is a lov member already”. I’m extremely socially awkward, even on this online platform, so I’m not going to mention the aforementioned tumblr user’s name because I’m too anxiety-ridden to try to contact them. This is in no way shape or form an attack on the person’s opinions nor their character. It’s me... rambling about my thoughts about their opinions at 4 am.

Is it defending myself? Well, not really, because I don’t feel personally attacked. Just because we have a difference of opinion doesn’t mean we have to resort to attacking each other. I found their opinions thought-provoking and wanted to pick my own brain... I picked this time purposely so nobody would see this post :eyes: so like uhm yeah

anyways let’s get into the meat

villain hawks

yay or... nay...?

Well, in fanon it would be such a fun idea to play around with. Personally I think there’s potential for League of Villain interactions with Hawks. I would LOVE to see Hawks interacting with the other pro heroes, but the only pro-to-pro interaction we get with Hawks is between Hawks and Endeavor. Because the atmosphere between the pro-heroes feels... disconnected.

Now, hear me out.

Let’s contrast it with the idealized version of hero society provided in future fics. Or hell, comparing the top ten pro heroes to Class 1-A itself. We want to think all the heroes are friendly with each other and have some sort of camaraderie with each other

But Horikoshi doesn’t present it like that.

The closest thing to that we get is Endeavor and Hawks. Other than that, the atmosphere between hawks and the other heroes seem more strained or tense (the whole miruko hawks thing is fanon). And even then, it’s... well... Endeavor and Hawks don’t truly know each other. Hawks only knows the public perception and image of Endeavor, which is the only thing he’s been given while Endeavor doesn’t truly knows Hawks either. I’m not saying the interactions are fake, but... would Hawks be acting the way he was if he knew about Endeavor’s past?

No. I don’t have any predictor to how differently Hawks would act, but I definitely sense there’d be a lot of disappointment and loss of respect for the man he was rooting for. To what extent? Would Hawks just be in complete disbelief? Or would he react with immediate anger? There are parallels to Hawks and Todoroki Rei--both were picked from the crowd and had their lives controlled because of their “value” determined by Endeavor/The Hero Commission respectively.

But honestly from an objective standpoint, I have nothing to go off of other than the fact that Hawks deeply respects and idolizes Endeavor the most out of anyone in the manga we’ve seen and the fallout of that would be of an equally shattering magnitude...

Ahh i went off on a tangent. the point is... do we really know Hawks? Does Hawks ever get a chance to just.. be himself? Maybe we see a bit of that shine when he’s alone with Endeavor, but as we saw clearly in chapter 186 he puts on a care-free facade for his fans. But in reality... he’s always working because he’s one of the hero commission’s greatest assets.

and... here’s where our opinions clash. I truly, in the depths of my heart, believe that Hawks is building a reality where heroes have more free time comes from a more selfish desire for himself. Don’t get me wrong--I don’t want to disservice what Hawks has done for society. But also it feels like he’s the type who overworks himself because he feels moral obligation to society when... technically he doesn’t owe anything to society.

Yes, in superhero shows and whatnot, it’s usually a positive trait that “hey this person’s been born with an amazing power and they’ve chosen to use it for the greater good! Look what they’re sacrificing!!!” But let’s say theoretically that person decides “hey i don’t want to be a hero i just want to be a writer!” Are they morally wrong for deciding not to be a hero even though they would theoretically be good at it? Even though it’s not something they want for themselves?

Because I don’t think Hawks wants to be a hero. But he also doesn’t want people to die. He’s tied himself with these moral obligations to the point where he can’t leave now because he feels it would be selfish of him to. And that is speculation, but Horikoshi isn’t exactly spelling it out for us! So, that’s how I interpret Hawks’ character. Yes, he is a true hero in that he wants to save as many people as he can, even at the cost of his pride his dignity his fucking freedom...

but also, he never wished for that. he never asked to be one who has to deal with all of this. But now that he is, what choice does he have?

So, yes, we agree on that. But I also feel that his personal desire plays as big of a part. Because we, as humans, naturally want things for ourselves. Our personal desire for ourselves shouldn’t be downplayed at all! That’s why I believe his inner thoughts are worded “more free time” rather than “make society more safe”. Because he has his priorities! He wants the best of both worlds-- it’s a form of negotiation. He can still play the hero and less lives would be taken but he can also having some breathing room for himself like he’s always wanted.

To free himself just a little bit from the stressful life of being a hero.

There is nothing wrong with being motivated by personal desires. Hawks is one of the most grounded heroes we’ve seen--I think he’s cynical enough that he’s self aware of this selfish desire for a freer life. And it’s selfish to him only because he knows that it would never happen without the expense of a few lives-- lives that he knew he would never forgive himself for letting slip.

I think it’s a toxic mindset.

Because as heroic as placing others above yourself... that attitude is completely unhealthy and I don’t think it should be celebrated. What I want to see from Hawks’ natural progression as a character is recognizing that it’s okay to prioritize yourself. Hell, Midoriya learned this during the summer training arc and failed to retain that lesson during the Overhaul arc! THESE HEROES DON’T TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES!!! (ok i get midoriya’s trying).

And if it’s selfish to desire more free time for yourself off from work, is it really that wrong of someone to do so? To want more control over your life? To want to do things you want to do rather than what others want you to do?

What does this have to do with villain Hawks? Well, I think a large desire for villain hawks is because it shows the departure of that mindset! Hawks doesn’t need to be confined to his hero persona anymore, he can finally do things he wants to do and be the free bird he’s always wanted to be.

But him becoming a complete villain is... far-fetched. This myself I recognize. I’ve only written villain!hawks once and that was because he snapped after the hero commission executed shigaraki and dabi as a show of power rather than going through the effort of trying to re-integrate the men back into hero society. I don’t want to go too deep because this isn’t the point I’m trying to make, but Hawks realizes how power-obsessed society is to the point where he doubts the legitimacy of the hero commission itself and what they do for society and its people.

But, again, that’s not going to ever happen in canon so I won’t bring it up another time. The point I was trying to make is yeah, you’re right that Hawks would never become a villain. He wouldn’t become a murderer- if he does, he definitely needs more incentive than what we can go off from canon.

And ohhh boy here we go, reaching the erm elephant in the room.

Is Villain!Hawks just an excuse to write hotwings? And what is the plausibility of Hawks turning to villainy? Would Endeavor being exposed as a child abuser be the trigger if Hawks were to turn villain at some point in the story?

Eh...

I don’t know if I even want to go into the whole “this is just an excuse to make hawks and dabi evil boyfriends” because I’ve never used villain!hawks as justification for that personally. And I’m actually not as attached to hotwings as I am to something like shigahawks... I don’t have any points to counteract this other than my desire to see Hawks interact with the entire league. Because it would be fun to see him interact in an environment he’s not wholly familiar with. With Endeavor or the other heroes or even the hero commission, he has some semblance of control or understanding so he thinks/acts like he knows what’s going on.

Meanwhile, the League is a huge mess and they don’t have their shit together and wouldn’t it be funny to see Hawks as a part of their crew suffering with them!!! Well, that’s bias. My bias. For fanon. And for the jokes. So sad :(

So... I don’t just want to see more Dabi and Hawks interaction. I want to see more Hawks and League interaction. or just more hawks and anyone interactions overall. maybe thats all i crave

Actually going through the points one by one, let’s talk plausibility.

I already talked about villain!hawks being a... departure from Hawks’ faults in his own character. But it is pretty extreme, I’ll admit. If Hawks were ever to join the League of Villains, he’d probably never use killing as first resort. As we’ve seen in chapter 220, it’s not like the League targets only heroes... but i get the salt tag was made like 5 months ago so it’s not like new information hasn’t been released at the time of posting.

Reminds me of domestichobgoblins’ shigadabihawks fic where shigaraki even acknowledges “Whatever bullshit you’ve been telling Dabi, you aren’t a killer either, are you? So what, exactly, am I supposed to do with you?” And you know? The both are you are right. Hawks isn’t a killer and he wouldn’t become a killer willingly... unless he was pushed by some other greater force but I’m not here to address any of that. He could still provide support to the league in other ways, arguably, or just joining the league could be some kind of message to the heroes or supporters of hero society.

You are right to a degree. Hawks’ sole motivator to become a villain wouldn’t be because “OH ENDEAVOR IS AN ABUSER GUESS I GOTTA TURN EVIL NOW”.

Okay pushing past that, so why would Hawks be motivated to become a villain? In canon? I’ve already warped a lot of this post with my own fanon but I’m trying to keep within the realm of canon for this point specifically since you could take a second to push Hawks over the edge in fanon and be done with it. But why would Horikoshi specificially do it?

The fact is hero society sucks. A lot. And I think Hawks recognizes that fact being the most “grounded” and cynical of the bunch. His views and visions of hero society aren’t warped by fantasies and such (which is probably why he doesn’t like All Might...) so he understands what’s happening around him. He understands the mechanisms of hero society and how “valuable” quirks are viewed as in their capitalist society.

But also, he doesn’t have that much of an option other than trying to lessen the burden placed upon him. Because he’s a single man, and even with his influence, he can’t change society. He’s powerless to do so, even considering who he is. He’s seen as a role model to those in society, but it’s because of his ranking that ironically fuels why people even look up to him: denouncing that would be kind of silly considering it’s the reason why people would listen in the first place.

And this is the point where I say... Shigaraki had a point. Hero society is flawed. It shouldn’t be so reliant on one person to carry it all.

But also hero society itself is bullshit. The ranking system? Horrible. The fact that the hero commission views them as tools for their own disposal? Horrible. The mere fact they basically bribe Hawks into becoming a hero? Like? “Hey kid you’re the best at being a hero so that’s what you should do. we’re only going to give you financial support if you become a hero so you might as well” like what is Hawks supposed to do in that sort of situation? Of course he’s going to succumb to the pressure.

I don’t believe in this whole “sacrifice for the greater good” bullshit. If Hawks wants to be a hero, that’s a whole another story, but if Hawks doesn’t, then he shouldn’t have been forced into that role. It’s about agency--it’s about letting him decide for himself if it’s what he wants to do. And it’s... a gray area for morality. “It’d be selfish for him to let people die!” Who is in the right to say whether or not he should use his “powers” for others’ sake? Me? You? The Hero commission?

So if Horikoshi goes down the path of “hey hero society is extremely bad and needs to change” and Hawks recognizes the League as a proponent for that change, then with a lot of development, it’s plausible in the future. I understand that Hawks, as of what we currently see, is too upheld by his own morals to ever even think about crossing that line, but people change. Hell, you recognized how the High End arc changed Endeavor and made miles of metas about it.

So, is it really far-fetched to say villain!Hawks is just a dream?

Maybe I’m a fool or an optimist, but I’d love to see Horikoshi take that path. Not because I’m horny for evil boyfriends, but it’d be a nice change of pace and we’d get to see a complete contrast of Hawks’ experiences. And it wouldn’t be easy-it’d had to be done right. Just like Endeavor’s redemption arc--if Horikoshi is still planning it. (Let’s be honest: High End Arc was not a formal redemption. I think it was Horikoshi letting the readers know “there might be something worth saving in Endeavor!” but i digress because i don’t care enough about endeavor (his character and redemption has 0 appeal to me and thats FINE. YOU DO YOU AND I DO ME, I only talk about him when it’s essential to talk about the influence he has on characters I DO care about).

As to why people like to characterize the moment Hawks decides to quit being a villain being attributed to Hawks learning Endeavor is an abuser...

The fallout, as mentioned earlier, could vary. A lot. Hawks really looked up to Endeavor when he was young. Again, shattering to find out something so nasty about the one you idolized.

To know that the one Hawks looked up used his wife just like how the hero commission used Hawks. Like an object or tool at their disposal.

Would he be vengeful or spiteful towards Endeavor personally? To others, probably yes. To me? I’m kind of in the “eh” skeptical ballpark so I guess we somewhat agree on that. To me, Endeavor being exposed as an abuser would crush that small slither of childish hope that hero society represents something bigger than themselves. Did Hawks ever get to have the childhood Deku had where he was still cheering on the heroes from behind the screen, or did it get crushed just as quickly when he realized how hero society truly works?

Because hero society isn’t bigger than themselves. It shouldn’t be idolized so heavily as it is presented in BNHA.

At least, not in its current state. And people who don’t fit in that group or agree with its ideals suffer the consequences. Like Shigaraki. Like Twice and Spinner. Like Gentle.

These are all villains that are products of society that promised to stamp out villains. And when Hawks realizes that it’s just a never ending cycle where the people left in between the cracks are the ones who perpetuate the system itself...

Like you said, Hawks sees the bigger picture. And his goal is to lessen the burden of the workload for heroes. There will never be a shortage of everyday criminals using their quirks for petty crimes but what about the bigger picture organizations? How are they going to be stopped? What about examining the root core of the problem and going from there? No more short-term solutions to problems... What can Hawks, mighty number two hero, do even at the expense of himself? Hmm...

I don’t know, just some food for thought. Something I’ve seen done for villain!hawks is the hero commission throwing Hawks under the bus for some reason and Hawks either a) joins the league to gleam more information but finds himself willing to stay or b) has nowhere else to go and it’s more of a push for Hawks to orbit towards the League.

I am really thankful for your thoughts! Even though we don’t agree on things, I think discussion is still possible (whenever my anxiety stops bashing me in the head) and I’m always willing to accept I may be wrong about something. At this point in time (3/27/2019), we have less than 10 chapters released that centers around Hawks, but he’s certainly intrigued a lot of people considering he’s already #4 in popularity from so little chapters released! I think he and his introduction to BNHA represent the more cynical side of hero society that we haven’t been able to properly see from Deku’s perspective!

And I’m interested in what direction Horikoshi is going to take Hawks’ character in! The one thing I’m truly against is Hawks staying the “good little hero” in the end--whether he dies, becomes a villain, or hell even just stops being a hero is good enough for me. Free the bird or kill him off is what I’d want to see. That’d be enough of a character arc for me. Characters change, and it’d be silly to expect Hawks to stay the same especially since he has a lot of baggage on his shoulders and his current situation as a double agent for the League is precarious--despite him stating that he was willing to sacrifice his own reputation for the good of everyone, there’s no guarantee that he wouldn’t feel at least some degree of hurt over losing the respect of everyone and his colleagues.

My thoughts are pretty clunky but maybe someone was able to gleam something from my stupid 5 am vent...

I love Dabihawks, even though I’m not as invested in it as say Shigahawks or ShigaDabiHawks (which I’m sure you’d definitely have objections to considering your other salt posts... but not something I want to address here), and I still think DabiHawks is a great ship more so because of the dynamic than the aesthetic. But hey, you ship what you ship, you are allowed to express your disdain for the ship--I’ve certainly expressed my own disdain for the your ship in the past--and your salt posts which probably took like 10 minutes to type out provoked me to type out my own thoughts which took like 2 hours to fully process. Like I said earlier: you do you, I do me.

And again-- I’m not trying to “defend” here nor am I trying to “attack”. I just had things I wanted to say and I hope I DON’T have the attitude of someone looking down on you, because I think you have very valid opinions and thoughts and sometimes discourse can just be healthy discussions about how we interpret different characters. We are literally squeezing everything we can out of one character we love and there’s enough room for different interpretations of the same character ^^ If anything, I actually look up to you, which is why I’m too much of a coward to send this to you because oh my god i am so embarrassed about a lot of the shit that comes out of my mouth and i constantly worry about if im saying wrong things even though im open to people telling me why im wrong about said things.

tdlr; villains hawks very good. has nothing to do with dabihawks. villain hawks very good on its own. I agree with tumblr user on a lot of things, yet we see differently on other things. The world keeps spinning--I think it’s more interesting to address differences in opinions rather than ignore them.

this has been sorta meta but not really just chicken fucking around at 6 am and good night. maybe sometime in the next... month... ill have the courage to send this to the tumblr user. maybe when i have confidence... or maybe when i make mel look this over. that was a joke- she couldnt even finish my other meta piece which was shorter than this. :)

I Know You (Dean/Cas)

Summary: Cas gets sappy post-sex, and Dean feels more in love than he ever has before. (Me? Ignoring my prompts to write a Supernatural fic? Likely. Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy!! Warnings for mentions of sex, but like, vague.)

Dean is no stranger to the aftermath of sex. He’s done it with many women, a handful of men, too. However, in the past, it’s usually been a ‘put your clothes on and head out’ kind of deal, not...Not like this.

Cas has his face buried in the crook of Dean’s neck, the two of them still sweaty but too wiped out to care. Catching their breath, falling into a rhythm as their chests rose and fell in sync. It’s so peaceful, so totally a mushy, lovey-dovey moment that Dean never thought he’d be in—

And then, because his angel is an asshole, Dean feels fingers creep up his sides and he squirms.

“Don’t you dare,” he warns, but it’s a lost cause. Cas is already wiggling fingers across his ribs, making him spasm and laugh, batting at the offending hands. “Cahas!”

“I’m sorry, I can’t help it,” Cas replies, smiling. “You look so beautiful when you laugh like this.”

Dean’s laugh turns into a gentle whine. “Shut it, hotwings,” he said, but the way his cheeks flushed revealed he wasn’t so upset about the flattery.

“Do you not believe it when I tell you these things?”

Oh, here comes that famous question, Cas always poking and prodding (and no, not literally this time) about feelings. It’s sweet, of course, and Dean appreciates that he cares...But it makes him so damn embarrassed to voice these things.

He clears his throat. “This is really sexy pillow talk,” he says, trying to change the subject. He goes to roll off the bed, pull on his boxers and head for the showers, but Cas wraps his arms around his middle and pulls him close, pressing a kiss to his cheek. “Please, stay.”

And so, Dean does. He lays back against the mattress and looks up at Cas with soft eyes. “You’re not gonna tickle me again, are you?” he asks, raising his brows.

Cas shakes his head with a laugh. “No. Not right now, at least,” he replies, a soft smile curled on his lips. “I just want you to hear something.”

Dean, for once, bites his tongue. He can crack another joke, he can push Cas off and flip their positions and kiss him to shut him up...But he doesn’t. He lays there, looking at Cas expectantly.

“I put you back together,” Cas says, his voice so soft yet somehow rugged, too. “I know you, Dean, down to every molecule, every atom...”

Dean’s breath stutters as Cas strokes his cheek, heart pounding in his chest.

“Every freckle, every scar. Each eyelash, tooth, and fingernail...” Cas continued, his hands moving down to rest on Dean’s shoulders. “I know you, inside and out, on the most intimate level imaginable...And you’re beautiful.”

Dean’s face burns. He isn’t one to embarrass easily, but Cas is staring at him so intensely, and his words are almost too much for him to handle, and his eyes fall to avoid Cas’ gaze, but a hand is quickly under his chin, coaxing him to lock green eyes with blue.

“I wish you knew how beautiful you are,” Cas says, earnestly.

“Cas...” Dean croaks. “I—“

Cas leans down and kisses him to silence whatever inevitably argumentative reply Dean plans to give. He kisses him deeply, and Dean kisses him back like Cas is the only thing keeping him from drowning. In a way, he is. The last time that he lost Cas, he lost a piece of himself. He drank, slept too much or not enough, forgot himself more often than not.

When Cas came back, it was like a puzzle piece being put back where it belonged, in Dean’s chest, right where his heart resided.

And Cas, his sweet, sweet Castiel, is fawning over him as if he’s anything special?

“I know you don’t believe it,” Cas whispers against the skin of his cheek. “But you are the most beautiful man in all of Heaven and Earth, Dean Winchester.”

Tears prick at his eyes, and Dean blinks them back. “Hell, too?” he asks, unable to resist shattering the tension, desperate to divert the conversation from himself, the praise almost too much to bear.

Cas chuckles, a fond look sparkling in his eyes. “Hell, too. And Purgatory. Anywhere and everywhere,” he says.

Dean reaches out and pulls Cas down into a kiss again, and when the two of them fall asleep there, Dean feels safer and more loved than ever before.
