Writing Patterns

It’s late afternoon, the sun slowly starting to creep towards the horizon. (Learning curve - Guardian, Guo Changcheng and Shen Wei-centric)

His back aches. (But pursue no regrets - DMBJ, Pangxie)

It starts, as many thing do, with a question in a group chat on a Sunday afternoon: Is professor Shen okay? (The grace of care - Guardian, Shen Wei and Jiajia-centric)

“It shouldn’t be possible,” Zhao Xinci grumbles, “and yet here we are.” (Exchange - Guardian, platonic Weilan i guess? Zyl is literally a child in this and they’re meeting for the first time idk)

Blood isn’t hard to get off the kitchen floor. (The easy part - Guardian, Zhao Yunlan-centric)

Patterns: I like to start with shorter sentences, to quickly draw the reader in. I either start with something to introduce the setting a little bit but with a twist, or with some action. I try not to open with (too much) exposition or description, instead trying to make my first sentence immediately evoke questions: what is wrong with Shen Wei? What is he doing?? Blood on the floor??? Developing the pace and mood of the piece first, and only then delving deeper into the real setting and what is actually going on. If I can I like to put my readers on the wrong foot a little at the start: e.g. ‘exchange’ isn’t about zxc at all. The first sentence for me is all about drawing the reader in, and once I’ve got them, that is when I start explaining myself. (There are exceptions to this, where I start with the setting right away, e.g. in ‘learning curve’, but i tend to look back on those as my weaker opening lines/paragraphs :)).

Ijin:

I've been a Trainee at SM Entertainment for more than 1 year. Today I am preparing for the weekend assessment. Stressful, I've been afraid he'll eliminate me for 1 years, and yet I'm still here. When I was 13, I auditioned in Europe, and coincidentally, I was accepted. I didn't believe it, neither did my parents. But apparently I liked them. My parents took a while to agree to send me to Korea when I was 13 years old. I was young, yet they already knew that I wanted to become an idol, they thought it was my chance.

And thanks to their support, I am here today preparing to avoid elimination.

Jin Sol:

An hour, an hour that I wait impatiently for the start of the weekend check. Pretty much like elimination basically, if you no longer meet the requirements of the mentors, well, you say goodbye to your dream of starting out at SM. I've been a Trainee since… since when? I'm 18 today, so it's been 3 years. I was recruited in front of my school by a nice woman. She told me that she really liked me, that I had the right style. I didn't understand but I followed her and today I do my stretching and vocalizations to avoid wasting this chance that I was given.

Chenny:

I don't really know what I'm doing here, to become an idol? Maybe ? Anyway, I'm paying the price. Today is the day of eliminations, maybe the mentors will be in a good mood, letting all the girls stay, or not. Anyway, we'll know in a few minutes. I'm on the ground, almost exhausted. I feel like my 5 years of Trainee are starting to weigh on me. I'm afraid of having made all these efforts for nothing, I'm afraid of regretting having made this choice. I get up trying to be positive though badly, it's not such a horrible experience, I met nice people, like Yerin, even if she's weird. I finish my stretches the moment we are called for elimination.

Gabi:

We enter the large training room, there were more than twenty girls, we were even more numerous but over time, the number dropped considerably. I hope to stay, I want to fulfill my dream. I've been a Trainee for about 2 years and I've always given it my all. I hope they realized that.

The mentors repeat the same things to us as they have for the past 3 years: Our invaluable chance of being a Trainee at SM, although we may be pretty and know how to move a little, we have to make a difference in this industry, as we should make sacrifices in life. That's why they break some so that others succeed. We line up, as always, and carefully scrutinize the rows, passing between each girl to observe us. They said nothing, unusual. That said, for some time now, they have been making us train on group choreographies more often. There is something to do with this unusual check. One of the mentors speaks.

_ You can all be ready and return to your usual occupations, except for a few.

How so ? Would it be for a new group? Some of us will soon be debuting.

_ I call Huang Chenny, Choi Yerin, Woo Ose Lynn, Ishiwari Aymio Ishi, Min Jin Sol, KIM GABI, Akane Sato, Da Heni, Lee Seo Ara and finally Lin Ijin.

I HAVE BEEN CALLED?! Did I hear my name correctly? The other girls all leave while I remain glued to the spot, in shock. They called me.

Heni:

I stay with the rest of the girls in the practice room. They mentioned my name, it means that I will be in a group with these girls. We all know each other but I'm mostly close to Ara and Ijin, they're the same age, I'm a year older even though it's Ijin who behaves like the oldest, she and Ara are still young, not to mention me. But still, we were selected. I don't believe in it somehow, yet I'm happy, I don't show it but maybe it's the result of my efforts.

Ijin: uh…maybe we should introduce ourselves formally, since we'll surely end up together, right?

Ijin is very calm and takes things well, it's amazing.

Ijin: Hello, I'm Lin Ijin, European Korean, Trainee for 1 year, being probably the youngest here, I'm 14 years old.

The girls who were each in their thoughts just now were all very attentive to Ijin's presentations.

Ijin: By the way Ijin, it's too formal, call me Iji, it's simpler.

The one who seemed to be called Jin Sol spoke up:

Jin Sol: Are you European??? It's so cool, your Korean is impeccable, do you know how to speak other languages?

Iji: Korean, English, French, German, I'm also learning Japanese for now.

Jin Sol: That's great! By the way I introduce myself, Min Jin Sol, 17 years old, Korean and Trainee at SM since 2018. I can't wait to get to know you all.

Akane:

Jin Sol was very energetic, it was nice to see. I felt like I was lazy around her. I slept little that night to train, it's a bit understandable. But his joy of living in his words gave me a little energy.

Akane: Uh…

I clear my voice a little and all the girls turn to me.

Akane: Hello everyone, I'm Akane Sato, I'm 16 years old and I'm Japanese. I've been a trainee here since 2018 too, and usually I never speak up on my own, but oddly it's easier with you.

Jin Sol: Nice to meet you!

She smiles with both of her, this girl is an angel.

Lynn:

If it was time for introductions, I decided to take the floor.

Lynn: Ohayō! I am also Japanese, as well as Akane's friend. I am 17 years old and my name is Woo Ose Lynn. Nice to meet you, finally formally, we almost all know each other.

Chenny:

Lynn just introduced herself, she was right. We almost all knew each other, collecting all the new Trainees entering our group of girls. I'm the oldest here, I've seen so many girls come and go, it feels weird to still be here.

Chenny: Hello, you all know me normally, I'm the oldest and I saw you all come to SM, I'm Taiwanese, I'm 18, Huang Chenny.

Yerin: I'm old too Chenny-ha !!

I look in the direction of Yerin, she also arrived when I entered SM and is still there of course. Mainly to annoy me with his baby voice.

Yerin:

I intervened during Chenny's presentation, I saw too all these girls arriving, I am too old. We've been a Trainee together since the beginning and she doesn't give any recognition, me always buying her banana milk cartons, her favorite.

Yerin: Chenny-ha, please don't forget me.

Yerin: Your oldest Trainee friend, though. In short, I'm Yerin, the girls, the one who brings the drinks most often, 18 years old like Chenny, Korean and a superb unnie, we're all going to have fun together.

Jin Sol: Unnie, you're funny.

Yerin: I know!

I think it's time for me to introduce myself too.

Gabi: Hello, I'm Kim Gabi, I'm 16 years old and I'm Korean, I can't wait to get to know you all better.

Jin Sol: We're going to start Gabi! You see, you shouldn't be desperate and cry.

Gabi: Soli, don't expose me like that!

And all the girls are laughing, the atmosphere was more relaxed than before.

AyMio:

The atmosphere between the girls began to soften, was reassuring, me who was afraid to speak.

AyMio: Hello, I'm Aymio, Japanese, I'm 17 years old. I've been a Trainee for 2 years, you can call me Mio, if you want, it's easier.

Yerin: Aren't you the one who always dances with a mask?

Mio: Uh…yes, it's a habit.

Yerin: I've seen you dance so many times to so many different styles, you're so talented.

Mio: Ah, thank you, that's very kind.

Ara:

I was so happy, I dreamed of debuting in a group for a long time, and I was selected in this group, with THESE girls. They look great, I'm already with Heni and Iji, my best friends, plus there's the girl I've admired from afar for a long time, Huang Chenny, she's too beautiful, accompanied by her friend Yerin who is great kind and benevolent. Not to mention the mask dancer, Mio, a real pro. I love them all already.

Ara: Hello! I'm Lee Seo Ara, I'm also 14, which makes me the second youngest, I admire you all, you are so beautiful and talented, I'm so happy to be with you!!

Yerin: You're super cute, a real angel.

Ara: Thank you, Unnie!

Iji: Oh Ara. You look very excited.

Ara: Are you kidding me, the three of us, the Moonz, are still together.

Heni:

Ara looked very happy that the three of us were together, she mentions our trio name.

Jin Sol: The Moonz? What is that ?

Iji: A nickname we gave to our trio, because we are two lunars, me and Heni, and an eclipse, Ara. It's a bit silly.

Ara: Not even, it's cute, and unique! Right, Heni?!

Heni: Yes, I like it. By the way, I'm Da Heni, I'm 15, I'm shy but I'm happy to be with you, really, finally…uh, yes.

Yerin: Lovely, you girls are lovely.

Gabi: We are 10, so I am also one of the youngest.

Lynn: How is the age order?

Chenny: I'm the oldest, June 9, 2003.

Yerin: I'm next: September 26, 2003.

Lynn: I was born on March 5, 2004, are others my age?

Mio & Jin Sol: Me.

They looked at each other at the same time, and burst out laughing.

Jin Sol: I was born on December 28, 2004.

Mio: I'm older than you then, May 23, 2004.

Gabi: I'm a 2005, born in November.

Akane: Am I younger than you? It's crazy, December 06, 2005.

Heni: So I'm the only 2006 here.

Iji: Me and Ara are both from 2007, but I'm the youngest of them all.

Ara: Yes, that's true.

Iji:

Introductions have been made and we get to know each other in a joyful and calm atmosphere. I like it, it's really very reassuring. I think we all got scared a few moments ago. But, this atmosphere that we have developed is the most reassuring in the world in my opinion.

Iji: I want to create a handshake.

Yerin: Why?

Gabi: Isn't it a bit early? After all…

Iji: I don't know, I'm happy to create something from the beginning with you.

The girls all look at me, afterwards to smile and approve.

Jin Sol: Come on, let's get up, it's more convenient.

Everyone stands up and we come together in a circle.

Ara: Doing something original!

Mio: We don't have a name yet, you know.

Iji: It's not a problem.

Akane: It's fine if it's original.

Gabi: A fun thing to do too.

Chenny: Let's use both hands, that's different than usual, right?

Jin Sol: Come on, let's do something like a hand game.

Lynn: Oh yeah!! As for children!

Iji: How about we all clap our hands twice, in both directions: top to bottom. Then we clap our hands.

Ara: Then we join them together, in front.

Mio: That's right!

Ara: Yeah!

Yerin: We end up lifting them together?

Chenny: Boring.

Yerin: Like you.

Akane: Shall we just lift them in style?

Gabi: Like a dance move! We get them up and turn around, then we go our separate ways.

Heni: We can try to see.

Iji: Ok, three, 1, 2,…

Jin Sol: 3!!!

They performed their handshake together.

Lynn: It's good but something is missing.

Gabi: Do we have to say something?

Iji: Why not: dont'you know !!! we !!

Iji: Where does that come from ?

Iji : My boundless creativity.

Yerin: Ok, let's try again?

Out Of The Woods Chapter 2

 A/N: Alrighty, here's a filler for you guys. Yes it’s going to be one of those slow burn stories. But trust me it will be worth it. I have not proof read this I apologize for any mishaps. I am very excited to show more of this story as it progresses. Also thank you so much to @jtargaryen18​ she has definitely helped me move this story along.

Chapter 1

Andy Barber appeared on the outside like any other family man, a good paying job, a nice home in a nice city, a beautiful wife and a very smart son. He had it all, but on the inside his life was on the brink of collapse. He and his wife Laurie never slept in the same bed anymore, he had begun taking up residence in the guest bedroom. His son had become distant and moody, though his son was a teenager and most teens start to become moody, it was very unusual for his son. Then there was his sex life, which since he and Laurie had been fighting that part of his life had become non-existent. Which left him lusting after a co-worker, one that was younger than him and hadn’t been in the firm for as long as he had but was already fantastic at her job; which led him to bump heads with her. He had never met such a strong willed woman, she was the extreme opposite to his wife. Y/n spoke her mind didn’t let people including the men around the firm push her around, she never took no for an answer when it came to cases making her one of the best DA’s in the firm. He loved his wife, but recently things had changed. His feelings for her had changed, it wasn’t because they were getting older. It was because there was no spark left in their relationship, though he was determined to try to make it work for the sake of their son. But damn Y/n Y/l/n out of his head, though she didn’t know it and he was way too proud to admit it; but she had him hooked. So there she sat on the other side of the meeting table, pen between her lips. What was she thinking about? He hadn’t realized that he had been staring until their boss came in to announce that he and Y/n were to be leading any new cases along with other colleagues. Andy gave a smug smile towards Y/n. “Looks as though you’re in with the adults now kiddo.” He gave her a wink before walking towards his office. He already had plans to get home so he and Laurie could talk, it would be the best time because his son Jacob was out with friends and wouldn’t be home until around dinner time. As he was walking out of the building he couldn’t help but over hear a colleague talk about asking Y/n out on a date. Andy couldn’t help but scoff, like she would go for some loser like Jack Louis. She wouldn’t right? Why was he even concerned about who she dated, she wasn’t his. But, he needed her to be.

Walking into his house, he could smell that his wife had been cooking which meant he was in for a long night of either arguing or silence. He desperately hoped for the latter, but life isn’t nice to men who long for someone who is not their wife. “Nice to see that you came home early Andy, we need to talk.” Laurie said turning to look at him her hands resting on her hips. Andy sighed running a hand down his face, as he hung up his coat and bag before grabbing a beer from the fridge. “Alright Laurie, what do we need to talk about?” He said popping off the cap of the cold bottle. “I want to make things work. If not for us for Jacob.” Laurie stated walking over to her husband resting her hands on his shoulders. “What do you say? Why don’t we rekindle this flame?” Andy sighed softly taking a long sip of his beer. “Let’s talk about this later.” He spoke before tilting his head towards the sound of the front door. Upon seeing their son Jacob enter the room they put on forced smiles.

Andy heard his alarm sound from his phone, groaning he turned it off and ran his hand over his face. He knew Laurie would be out running and he obviously knew that Jacob wasn’t up yet, so he got up walking over to his sons room and knocked on the door. “Jake time to get up.” He spoke as he opened up the bedroom door. “Come on Jacob, let me see those eyes.” After a bit Jacob finally popped his head up from under the covers and groaned to let his dad know that he was up. Once Andy finished getting dressed, he headed down to the kitchen seeing the normal sight he usually saw. Laurie pouring two cups of coffee and Jacob eating breakfast. Little did he know, his life was about to turn upside down. That morning he got a call saying he needed to be at a certain location, there had been a murder and they needed him and his co-worker Y/n Y/l/n to be at the scene. He let out a sigh and pulled out his cell before calling Y/n. “Y/L/N, we have a new case. They need us at the scene as soon as possible.” When she spoke his breath hitched a bit. Y/n told him she would meet him at the scene, and with that he headed on his way to the crime site. Andy got there before Y/n and soon noticed that the weather had become colder, the sun could no longer be seen like it had been earlier that day and it had seemed like it was going to rain. But when Y/n arrived it was as if his body became warmer, like he was borrowing her body heat it wasn’t sexual; it was more comforting. Andy snapped out of it as the two of them ducked underneath the yellow police tape. “Nothing worse than a kid.” Spoke a detective when he heard the victim’s name he stopped in his tracks, the kid went to the same school as his son. Andy seemed to have spaced, he didn’t want to think about it and didn’t want to be one of the parents that would be thinking it could’ve been his own kid down there. He snapped out of his daze when Y/n called his name. “Hmm?” He hummed and turned his gaze towards her. “Any leads to go off of?” She asked her head tilted slightly. “No. None yet.” He sighed heavily rubbing at his beard. “You know him don’t you.” She spoke a bit more sternly her arms folded over her chest. “He and Jacob went to school together, know his parents but not much.” He said shaking his head.

You sighed softly, Andy had just revealed to you that he personally knows the family of the murdered boy. “Are you sure it’s wise for you to be on this case Andy? Lynn might not agree when she finds out.” You spoke softly but enough to make him know that you were serious. “Um. Yeah it shouldn’t be a conflict.” He said before disappearing. You ran your fingers through your hair and sighed out in frustration, you knew what you were about to do was something that could break any trust with your work partner. Taking out your phone you called Lynn. “Lynn we have a problem.” You said.

Here you were sitting in your boss’ office 3 days after the murder, you knew this was going to break your co-worker but it needed to be done. When he walked in, he definitely wasn’t in a good mood. You chewed on you lip nervously. “Andy, we found a print on the victim it’s partial but it’s a print. The finger print that has been lifted from the victim is your sons. Y/n will be taking over the case.” Lynn spoke calmly. Andy looked at you and then back at Lynn. “You’ve arrested my son?!” He spoke loudly.  “Not yet, but they are preparing to get a search warrant.” You spoke up, when his eyes met yours. You felt uneasy, his usual bright blue eyes seemed almost grey. It wasn’t until he stormed out that you noticed that you had been holding your breath.  “Y/n are you alright.” Lynn asked you. “Yes ma’am I’m fine.” You spoke before leaving to go to your apartment that you shared with your roommate Diana. “Hey loser, I ordered take out. I figured you hadn’t eaten yet.” She yelled at you from the kitchen. A sigh of relief escaped your lips, it had seemed as if you were sighing a lot lately and for many different reasons. You walked into the kitchen and gave a small smile to her. “That rough huh?” She said raising a brow at you. “You don’t know the half of it.” You said jumping onto the counter and grabbing the beer she had handed to you.

racist as f*ck (se01-ep03)

Here we are, back at it again. Episode three. Advanced apologies because this summer has been a doozy. I lost my great-grandmother in June (every day without her feels surreal) and after some inner debate against that good old IMPOSTER SYNDROME, I went back to school to finish getting my bachelor degree.

The adventure through school is a blog post for another day but I’m here to talk about Insecure so let’s get to that.

Issa goes back home but her reunion with Lawrence is a series of very awkward events. They haven’t worked through anything! The whole issue throughout this entire season is how incredibly shitty these two are when it comes to communication. I swear to god, watching them interact with each other was stressing me out.

In the middle of all this, Issa and Lawrence are suffering with work woes. Lawrence’s head hunter basically tells him that he needs to dial it back even though the advice falls on his stubborn and deaf ears. Meanwhile, Issa walks in on a group conversation (Freida included) about her that’s clearly about her.

“They’re having secret white meetings and they’re sending secret white emails.”

There isn’t one black woman that has worked in a predominantly white space that’s walked around with a scarlet letter tattooed on their forehead after making one mistake while their white coworkers are given several chances for improvement. It’s just one of the many complexities of systemic racism in the workplace. 

What else is new?

At home, Issa explains her frustrations to Lawrence but he gives her the generic, “You have to work twice as hard to prove them wrong.” It’s not very supportive and when he turns around and explains to Issa about his own struggles with the head hunter, he is met with indifference. Issa absolutely should have listened to him because his feelings are also valid but every day, it’s the same conversation about the same damn problem. Lawrence, need to get over this shit and get a fucking job.

Nobody wants to choose a job that they feel will set them back a few paces. I never planned to do admin work in my thirties either but bills need to be paid. Issa tells him that she agrees with the head hunter and Lawrence doesn’t give much push back. I’m sure at this moment, he feels guilty for not offering the emotional and financial support that Issa needs but Issa also could have been a more supportive partner in this situation. There’s nothing more frustrating in the world than knowing you are qualified and will work hard for these jobs, only to be met with so many dead ends. That couldn’t be easy for Lawrence. (I can’t believe I’m actually defending him)

Trying to make it work, Lawrence offers to get a bite to eat but Isssa declines and goes off to have dinner with Molly.

After expressing her Lawrence woes, Molly gives Issa the “Love is a two way street” speech and Issa is not in the mood to hear that. Molly made a lot of sense in that situation but don’t worry, that’s the last time I’ll be saying that in this update.

Later, Molly and Issa join a group of friends and we meet the rest of the quartet: Tiffany (Amanda Seales) (along with her husband Derek [Wade Allain-Marcus]) and Kelli (Natasha Rothwell). In short, Tiffany is the bougie one and Kelli is the horny one. Not much of that changes until the most current season when Tiffany is given a really great storyline. Kelli, not so much.

Molly is still trying to figure out how she feels about Jered, so she invites him to this friend circle so everyone can also gage their opinions of him. They immediately fall in love with him. He’s charismatic and easy-going while also doting on Molly. But then she finds out that he’s never been to college and suddenly shifts her views on pursuing a relationship with him.

We’re only three episodes in and I’m already tired.

The next day, Issa has a beach day for the kids. One of my favorite scenes in this episode is when the kids replace “bitch” with “beach” because kids are little shits BUT THEY’RE JUST SO FUNNY. Quick shout out to Too $hort as one of the kids goes, “What’s my favorite word? BEACH!” That got a good laugh out of me.  Her beach day is successful and she basically proves her racist white coworkers wrong and gets an apology from Frieda in the process.

As Issa is at beach day, Lawrence visits his favorite bank teller, who I lovingly coined Titty Tasha. No, I’m serious. Tasha is fine as hell. Lawrence laments to her about finding a job or lack thereof, but Tasha boosts him and strokes his ego which is really all he wanted from Issa. 

But also, like I said, Tasha has big boobs and Lawrence may think he’s just being friendly but he’s not fooling me. He’s not fooling anybody with enough sense to know what his aim is. He even purposely lets someone skip him in the line so he can speak to Tasha. 

Men are funny.

While Issa is succeeding at beach day and Lawrence is subconsciously flirting with Tasha, Molly is harassing her black coworker. I mean, she wasn’t necessarily harassing the poor woman but the fact that she stayed quiet when Rashida or “Da Da” as she liked being called was introduced and her white coworker said he didn’t see color, just someone that was going to be getting her coffee makes this even more strange. 

Molly represents a very particular kind of elite black person and they always get on my nerves. I’ve had bosses like this, teachers and principals, classmates, family members… you name it. They hide behind these weird politics and ideals of how black people are supposed to behave around white folks all in the name of, “can’t let them see us being too authentic.” Girl, fuck these white people. Your white coworkers get raises and praise for doing half the work you do and you’re worried about a black girl that refuses to code switch to get ahead? Sounds like jealousy to me. 

Anyway, Da Da rightfully tells her off and Molly doesn’t take that as a moment to reflect but only to be self-righteous. This could have possibly marked the beginning of my dislike for this character, to be honest.

Also, seeming to just not “get it,” Molly gets accepted into the elite Black People Meet website called “The League” and calls Issa to boast about it. Issa wonders why she is still doing this after she spent a whole ass night trying to see how her closest friends felt about Jered. Molly’s reasoning is that The League has a better group of black men to date since Jered didn’t go to college. 

And yes, we know that’s a stupid reason but there’s a deeper layer of self-sabotage here concerning Molly. 

Issa basically points out how ridiculous this is, but Molly just doesn’t think Issa gets it. Or at least, Molly doesn’t want to hear Issa be honest with her. So she goes on her date but just before she heads inside, she tells Jered she just wants to be friends. Molly is counting a chicken before the egg hatches - which is just one of the many characteristics given to her. No, I don’t like Molly but I think it’s a testament to great writing that they do something so simple with this character because it will be something that appears in future episodes.

After her successful beach day, Issa comes home to find Lawrence fixing dinner but she’s got takeout in her hands. Damn, you guys can’t even properly communicate about dinner. 

Issa puts the dinner away with some frustration but chooses to eat the dinner that Lawrence prepared on the couch. This very obviously pisses Lawrence off because they really need to have a talk about her running away and him being a bum, so an argument ensues. Issa spills food on the couch and Lawrence uses the couch as a symbolism for the giant ass stain in their relationship. He blurts out that he’s trying and she’s not supporting and Issa has a moment of realization after a montage of when they first purchased the couch (and were happy) up to the present (when they are not) while Mocky’s “Weather the Storm” plays on. God, this scene was so good because we see this couple, who once loved each other so much, slowly fall apart as the singer’s haunting voice floats from scene to scene.

Issa tells Lawrence that she’s sorry and she is going to try and do better while Lawrence admits his faults and agrees. They toss out the couch and buy a new one because you know, symbolism and all.

New couch! New beginnings!

Or something like that…

Butter, candied shortbread and city bumpkin pie of the Lord’s greatest handiwork- you spotted her in the crowd and she smiled. The two mermaid eyed dolls she hauled in with her blushed and cooed at your gentlemanship. “So how did you like the performance?”, you asked.
